More National Acts coming to Clear Lake Sick Puppies, Filter, 12 Stones, Nonpoint and hed p.e. all making tour stops at Scout Bar More major recording artists and national acts will hit Clear Lake in July as Scout Bar has put together another great line-up for live music lovers. Highlighting the month of music at Scout is the Friday, July 23 show headlined by the alternative rock group Filter. Founded in 1993 by Richard Patrick, Filter has released four studio albums and is about to release their fifth, The Trouble with Angels next month. Most SCENE readers are likely to be familiar with Filter’s first single “Hey Man, Nice Shot” which was used on the Cable Guy soundtrack and still gets significant airplay 15 years later. Although many believe the controversial song was inspired by the suicide of Kurt Cobain. It actually was influenced by the public suicide of Pennsylvania State Treasurer Rober “Budd” Dwyer who
Richard Patrick of Filter
shot himself in the mouth during a televised press conference in the state capital in 1987. Catching that song live and in person is reason enough to catch the show. Australian alternative rock band Sick Puppies will take to the Scout Bar stage on Wednesday, July Emma Anzai of the Sick Puppies. 21. Although a hit “down under” since releasing their first studio album Welcome to the Real World in 2001, it took a while before the band would gain traction in America. But after appearing in the documentary ROCK PROPHECIES and writing songs used in the Free Hugs campaign video, the WWE and advertising and promotion for the Street Fighter video game, the group landed a US record deal with RMR/Virgin/EMI.

COVER STORY
Introducing Club Pure: Clear Lake’s Hottest Night Club By Adam Donaghey Clear Lake’s newest hot spot opened its doors in June. Club Pure is located at the corner of NASA Road 1 and Highway 3 at 229 E. NASA Road 1. Providing complete VIP treatment without the VIP price tags, the 5,000-square-foot ultra lounge is the ultimate place to lounge, drink and, most of all, dance. With its state-of-the-art light and laser show, surrounded by an eclectic mix of live DJ spun dance remixes, rock, hip hop and house music, Club Pure offers a nightlife experience and high energy dancing without the long commute downtown – ensuring more dancing and less driving! Formerly Breaker’s Pool Hall, the space has been completely revamped to cater to Clear Lake’s hottest nightlife crowd. Upon entering the club, guests are surrounded by white walls and low lights. A red chandelier accents the space and carefully placed artwork adorns the walls. Turn the corner and the room opens up to a full-service bar, surrounded by more chandeliers and an enormous mirror framed in gold, giving the space a luxurious ambiance. Flat screens are located throughout the club, mixing music videos to coincide with the music. Turn another corner and you’re in the middle of all the action. Go-go dancers entertain the crowds, patrons dance to the reverberating beat, and others lounge around. With lush, red booths and tables surrounding the dance stage, it's easy to get caught up in the mix. And for more private occasions, reserve one of the numerous VIP areas, set off from the general public, where patrons receive premium bottle service and the assistance of a VIP hostess. Complete the VIP experience with limo service to and from the club – perfect for bachelor or bachelorette parties and birthdays. Club Pure is open from 9 to 2 a.m., four nights a week, with a different theme every night. Industry Mondays with DJ Trey
encourage patrons to “come as they are.” Relaxed and casual, industry night is the perfect mix of dancing and casual mingling. 2-4-1 Throwback Thursdays with DJ Playboy encourage patrons to dress sexy casual as they enjoy the best music of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Dress to impress with DJ Playboy on Famous Fridays and DJ MPulse on Seductive Saturdays and enjoy the hottest dance remixes. With no cover (excluding special events), ladies night is every night. “We have the craziest drink power hour in all of Clear Lake,” Club Pure Promoter Jaime Gonzalez said. Come early and enjoy $1.25 domestics and wells from 9 to 11 p.m. and $2 Club Pure shots all night. With plenty of parking available and optional valet service, Club Pure is convenient and hassle free. Club Pure provides a smoke free environment, but smokers can enjoy the outdoor patio. Mark your calendars: On Friday, July 16, Club Pure will host 94.5 The Buzz Rod Ryan Hottie Posse Annual Party. To reserve your own party or VIP table, call 832378-4417. Shark Attack at Zone 504
Kevin Fenton at Signature Bistro
Loose Notes by Andy Eng June was a busy music month. Let’s dive in. People ask us where can they have a touch of music with their conversational dining. Two new spots on the beat come to mind, Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack and Magazine at Cullen’s Live Signature Bistro. The food at both places is well regarded. David Schwope at Swamp Shack The Swamp Shack this month had nonstop David Schwope on stage with ample gentle sea breezes in the air qualifying this spot as special hangout. Over at Signature Bistro, easy listening live music from Kevin Fenton's endless play list was on the Sunday brunch fare. Both places are recommended. Organzied Chaos at On and about the rest of the beat, we hooked onto the return Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash of Balinese Ballroom house reggae band, Shark Attack. Whoa! These guys are back, and they're attacking everywhere on the Space Monkeys at > SCENE (H&J, Pier 27 and Zone 504) and across the region. SumHugh & Jeff’s Car Wash mer's made for reggae - Go get attacked... Cullen's battle for the Taproot at Hectic at house band is continuing Scout Bar Scout strong every Thursday (Time In Bar A Bottle and Magazine put forth good shows and are still in the running). If you haven't been a part of this yet, you *REALLY* need to check it out! - Continued on Page 53

LOOSE NOTES Cont. From Page 54 Hugh & Jeff's continues bringing new bands onto the SCENE circuit. This month, Organized Chaos and Space Monkeys stormed through with perhaps the single most energetic show of the month with Frontman The Hectic @ Scout Bar Shawn Pritchard slamming down the over-the-top-high-energy honors. The Space Monkey's came down from the inner loop and scored the best sounding LOUD Cover Band Since Grand Funk Railroad... Speaking of high energy, Scout Bar came through with a nice shot in the arm when Taproot tour-stopped Clear Lake and unleashed one of the finest indoor arena band shows, complete with moshpit action for the fittest of fit – something the area's been craving. The Sunday night BuzzFest continues to cook with out-of-town acts Red Pyramid and The Hectic's CDrelease party rolling through. Come December, Taproot @ Scout Bar it'll be time again to pick a winner. For now, the heat is on! ---------------------INTO THE MUSIC: Wendy Colonna, who kicked off the TEXAS SONGWRITER SERIES, was back at Chelsea's touring out her new album, "We Are One." This award winning songwriter is crazy good. We were seriously taken with her "savory gumbo of soul, poetry and groove. With her sultry, Red Pyramid @ Scout Bar south Louisiana voice and masterful lyricism, she stirs up an eclectic mix of stylistic ingredients, creating a delicious musical experience for listeners" (http://wendycolonna.com). Janet's a community favorite and the community got an evening of energizing Galveston Bay weather and Janet Z and Earle Foote at the great music. Janet's Old Seabrook Music Series working on a new album, so we'll be keeping pulse on this. Speaking of new albums... Hamilton Loomis and his fans rocked out a packed Heads & Tails the other evening and we picked up Hamilton's new live album Live in England. Hamilton Loomis at Heads-N-Tails We're fanatics for good live recordings and energy wise, this album captures the band cleanly. Ambiance wise, we're not sure if the mastering studio might have been better off using the larger hall setting. While on larger reverb, this month's magical musical moment happened at the 6 String Roc bar's open mic with Jeremy Bradshaw. - Continued on Next Page

LOOSE NOTES Continued From Previous Page Summer solstice's long days had most of the crowd still out playing so Jeremy goes into a trance with an early Snit’s Dog and Pony Show at Katie’s model looper from Cisco. Whoa!!! With music spanning Europe to the Pacific Northwest, Winwood and ELP to Pearl Jam, the audience and staff got an acoustic trip the way acoustic trips were meant to be. Sweet!!! Hey, need a favor. People from outside the area keep asking ‘Where's good blues on the SCENE?’ I tell them Katie’s. We took in Snit's Dog and Pony Show, Luther and the Healers, and a waaaaaay over the top medley from Beaumont's Scott McGill and Old Dog Mac. We hear "Wow!" a lot at Katies.
More supporters at the Jeschke benefit at Dempsey’s Thanks to all who came out and supported this worthy cause and be sure to check out Clinton's Open Mic at Dempsey's. Over on the lake and on a big worthy note, Kelly McGuire's band serenaded the Boys & Girls Harbor Benefit (www.boysandgirlsharbor.org) over at Shoreline Properties. It makes sense Kelly and company would support this cause. We looked over their Mission Statement and totally admire how these folks take aim at one of societies most pivotal inflection points. Check them out! On the go-forward-boldly front, the Fab 40 did exactly that. This diverse Kelly McGuire at collection of Houston area volunteer Shoreline Properties musicians has fundraiser gifted the community with popular concerts from Beatles albums requiring FULL band and orchestras -- Not too shabby... ;-) Having most of the Beatles albums under their belt, the group ventured to the influences leading to many of those popular Beatles albums, the Beach Boy's "Pet Sounds." Many of you say "huh?" Listen up! According to The Beatles' producer George Martin, "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Fab Four at Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." Discover Green (and we all know where the Beatles influence lead). From our vantage point, this show was one of the most complex musical arrangements we've ever seen. Hats off musicians from around Houston (and our own backyard) for taking on and pulling off this project, and to Discovery Green for hosting the event -- T'was gutsy and bold.

Charity Beer for Gulf Oil Spill
Enjoy a New Belgium Brew this summer
You Could Win A Bike! New Belgium Brewing Company is probably best known as the maker of Fat Tire Amber Ale and a host of Belgian-inspired beers. The brewery began operations in a tiny Fort Collins basement in 1991 and today is the third largest craft brewer in the U.S. This marks the first summer since New Belgium added Ranger IPA to the portfolio of yearround beers. With Simcoe, Cascade and Chinook hops, this 7% ABV beer has a pretty solid hop profile at 60 IBUs (International Bittering Units). Apparently the beer is named after the New Belgium “Beer Rangers” or sales staff that have long wanted an IPA – something with a lot of hops. The New Belgium’s Summer Seasonal, Skinny Dip, is making a splash again this year. Available through September, Skinny Dip is 108 calories in each 12-ounce bottle and a great alternative to traditional “light” beers, with a unique and satisfying flavor. Skinny Dip is a bright blend of kaffir lime and sterling hops that makes the beer a full-bodied, figure-friendly choice for the flavor-minded. - Continued on Page 45 Did you know New Belgium’s Ranger IPA is available on draft at Chelsea’s in El Lago?
Introducing Abita SOS Abita Brewing Company recently announced the launch of a nation-wide fundraising effort to assist those impacted by the oil spill disaster. 'SOS – A Charitable Fund' will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive the oil spill. The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner. 75 cents from every bottle sold will go to charity. Related retail merchandise (hat, tee shirt, lapel pin, decal and car magnet) will be sold and 100% of net proceeds will benefit the SOS Fund. "Abita SOS is a message in a bottle. It is a distress signal sent out all across the 41 states where Abita is sold. It will raise awareness and money," stated David Blossman, President of Abita Beer. "We feel compelled as one of Louisiana's most cherished brands to help our coastal families as they struggle to survive," continued Blossman. "We're committing our time, talent and resources to help our fellow citizens through this disaster." Abita pledged that 100% of money raised would go to charity. Abita Beer is the oldest and

The 22-ounce brew bears hand drawn images of what makes the Gulf of Mexico so unique. Illustrations like those of pelicans, fish, shrimp and fishing boats are arranged in the pattern of the timeless distress symbol: S-O-S. Marsh grass and a symbolic pair of white "shrimp boots" also are highlighted in the beautiful design. - Continued on Page 45

American craft beer sales grow abroad, again In what is becoming a true success story, American craft beer exports again grew in 2009. The Brewers Association (BA) reports estimated international sales by independent craft brewers up 9 percent by volume for 2009, with some regions seeing export increases of more than 25 percent. The Brewers Association’s recently-concluded annual export survey revealed that for the seventh consecutive year (representing all years for which data has been collected), U.S. craft beer exports increased substantially. In 2009, BA Export Development Program (EDP) subscribers exported more than 1.4 million gallons of beer, rep-
resenting a 9 percent increase over total export volumes in 2008. The increase in international sales is substantial in light of the lingering global economic recession. Despite decreasing purchasing power, consumer demand for American craft beers has remained strong and importers have continued to expand their portfolios of American craft beer brands.

Abita SOS • From Page 49 Abita began brewing SOS weeks ago, and now it ages in holding tanks and finishes the brewing process. According to Jack Law of Faust Distributing, which distributes Abita beer in the Houston region including Clear Lake, Webster and Seabrook, the first SOS shipments will be available locally in late July or early August. The beer is an unfiltered Weizen
Pils made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, sweet malt flavor and pleasant bitterness and aroma. The brew is 7% ABV. Abita SOS merchandise is available for purchase immediately at a special website created for the fund, SOS.abita.com. Online donations can also be made directly to the fund. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Abita Beer launched Restoration Pale Ale and a related line of merchandise raising over half a million dollars for hurricane relief. -----------------------------------

That being said, immediately following MIP, we go into pre-production for a measly five days before shooting our next project (also on the Canon 5D), co-written and to be directed by my future and temporary housemate. The film, titled UNCERTAIN, TX, is named for the small Texas town, with a population of approximately 150, on the west side of Caddo Lake; and will touch on it's rich history and eerie superstitions. Although our principle location is a bed and breakfast located in the neighboring city of Marshall, there will be plenty of footage filmed on location. Much like LOVERS OF HATE, which was conceived during a stay at the principle location, the script for UNCERTAIN, TX was largely written because of the already existing bed and breakfast. 1. Rinse with cold water to make your hair shiny. TRUE! Cold water lays down the cuticle of the hair. Since shine is simply a reflection of light, a smooth cuticle will allow the hair to shine to its full natural potential. But you could lose that shine if you don’t blow dry properly, so always use a shine-enhancing styling product and blow dry the hair using a directional nozzle.

Galveston County Twins Launch Rockstar Clothing Line By Betsey Ennis
wouldn't have been the same.”
Twenty-something twin sisters Amber Burdge and Anita Wingate have gone rogue. They are rebelling against the teddy bears, cartoon animals and goofy slogans found on most baby clothes.
The quality of Rockstar Law’s products and the service they provide is of the utmost importance.
In 2009, when Anita began shopping for her unborn child, the twins found it difficult to find infant clothes that fit their style, so they did what seemed to be a no-brainer for them: They started their own clothing line, Rockstar LAW.
First-time mom Anita explained that she and her son have personally experimented and discovered what works and what doesn’t and which styles are more comfortable and more convenient.
The sisters describe their original infant, toddler and youth design collection as “extremely unique – edgy, yet upscale.” “No farm animals or cheesy quotes here!” Anita said, “If we wouldn't wear it, then we don't want our little loved ones in it!”
Amber said, “Not only do we have first-hand experience with Anita being an outstanding rockstar mom and myself being the coolest rockstar aunt, but friends and family tell us what they look for in a product.”
Amber explained, “Like most girls, we have always had an eye for fashion and have always been very creative.”
“Our line has been a huge hit at birthdays and baby showers” Amber said. “When everyone else shows up with traditional gifts from large corporate chain stores, our clients steal the show with our Rockstar clothes and accessories.”
Anita added, “The timing seemed perfect because so many of our friends have kids, and the need for classy, yet edgy, rock-inspired clothes is in demand.”
The twins said Rockstar Law will be continually adding new products to their line. This month, be sure to check out the addition of five new products to their Entourage line.
Amber explained how Anita’s not-yet-one-year-old son is their biggest muse.
What is an Entourage line, you ask? “One law of being a great Rockstar is you gotta have a great Entourage!” Amber explained. “Our line lets you splurge on your little Rockstar and treat yourself, family and friends as well.”
“He inspires us and all of our line,” she said. “He has this natural rocker edge about him. We feel like if we would have started the line any sooner, it

Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty.
Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT SAILBOAT RACES Every Wednesday from April to September professional and amateur sailors get together for a friendly sailboat race on the waters of Clear Lake. These races were created with the public in mind, and the course has been set where the race can be enjoyed by spectators from some of the restaurants and bars around the lake. The races start promptly at 6:15 PM and finish before sunset. Come out and enjoy an evening of fun and relaxation. There's always some commentary on the action, and if you wish to participate, you're welcome to sign up on a crew list and join the fun. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our special Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

DIRECTOR VINCE PRIVITERA’S FILM TO BE FEATURED EN

ARTS
SC
“The Empty Chair” at TAACCL
The admission is free, but a small donation is always welcome for the non-profit art center. Film begins at 6:30 p.m. on July 8 and concessions will be sold at TAACCL.
By Peggy “Domino” Taylor A well known director in Hollywood is a neighbor to all of us in the Clear Lake Community, Vince Privitera, has a new film that will have a special premier at The Arts Alliance at Clear Lake on July 8. “The Empty Chair” is his newest film that he wrote and directed.
TAACCL is located at 2000 NASA Parkway in Nassau Bay. For more information call 281-335-7777 or www.taaccl.org
Vince Privitera studied acting and directing at the Dramatic Workshop in the New York City.
On a personal note, I have spent time with Vince Privitera yearly at the annual Gulf Coast Film Festival and TAACCL events, and since then I have had the opportunity to be under his direction making a small film and I learned more in one day from his direction and teaching than years from any teacher or director in the art of acting.
He has written and directed several plays and movies including “Witchfire”, starring Shelly Winters, which he both wrote and directed. He has a Masters Degree in film studies from the University of Houston. He is presently is in pre-production of his new film, “The Disappointed Sister”. Mirror Production presents the VJP Film, “The Empty Chair” and features several local actors. Featured actors are Bob Lemmon, Frances Berndt, Sara Wycoff, Brian David, Joe Grassifi, Neal Gave and Angela Dautreuil. The music score is by David Darling. The audience will be treated to suspense as the film features a group therapy meeting that turns into a murder mystery. This ‘who done it’ will have the audience more than just entertained.
It is a real honor to know this longtime director. Additionally, my dear friend and longtime Farpoint Theatre actress and stage manger Frances Berndt is in this film. I have worked years with her on and off stage and I know this feature will be a real treat. Break a leg!
ARTIST KELLY HALBACH ESTABLISHES MEMORIAL FUND which benefit the Clear Lake community. The non-profit center will continue to present Visual, Literary, Educational and Performing Arts.

Joe Halbach, a Nassau Bay resident, was a strong supporter of the Arts and TAACCL. The memorial fund has been established to help support the on going programs at TAACCL

JULY 2010
THE 48 HOUR HEIST: Continued From Previous Page Shooting ends that evening, but the work has just begun as the crew heads back to start editing which will take them into the night and all of the next day. There are mega audio problems, but no time to fix. Sunday, 7:15 p.m. Juan Lopez is driving like a mad man to meet the 7:30 deadline delivery on West Gray in Houston. They make it. Screening takes place the following Tuesday and Clemons’ hopes for a win are crushed by the audio snafu. “It’s like catching lightening in a bottle,” he says. “We just didn’t have enough time to fix the problems and meet the deadline.” Stating how their 2008 entry, Rushin’, won best film and six other awards, Clemons’ says that was the crowning jewel they will always strive to match. “There was a lot of synergy going on during that shoot,” he recalls. “The magic just happened.” Next on the horizon for SBJ is a short film and perhaps a documentary. A full-length film is on the drawing board and making films as a full-time profession is also in the cards. Would he give up his day job? “Yeah, if I make enough money,” he laughs.
A Closer Look: 48 Hour Film Project genres for 2010 included: Buddy Film, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Film de Femme, Film Noir, Horror, Mockumentary, Musical or Western, Road Movie, Romance, Sci Fi, Silent Film, and Thriller/Suspense. Wildcards included: Adventure Serial, Dark Comedy, Foreign Film, Heist, Historical Fiction/Period Piece, Mystery, Surprise Ending, Time Travel Movie or Doppelganger Movie. SBJ Films drew: “Musical or Western” but they opted out by drawing a “Wildcard” and drew “Heist.” Character: Sherman or Sharon Brown, recently unemployed; Prop, a book; Line of Dialogue: “There’s a $2 service charge.” Plot by SBJ Films: Comic book buff, Sherman Brown, wants to make a memorable entrance to an upcoming comic book convention so practices flying in with a propelled backpack which unfortunately explodes and kills him. His friends, wanting to grant his last wish, steal his body, take him to the convention and propel him in anyway. Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel T2i and a Canon 5D Mark 2. SBJ Films crew: Jason Clemons, Michael Darling, Caroline Parker, Juan Lopez, Robyn Drake, Jason Fennelly, Kent Ohler, Mitch Youts and countless volunteers. SBJ Films titles: The Final Flight of Sherman Brown, Eternal Peace, BetMan, Love Struck, Rushin’, Knightfall, Him, Dirty Laundry. Winner of 2008 Houston 48 Hour Film Project: Rushin’ by SBJ Films. (They also took home Best Directing, Best Writing, Best Acting, Best Use of Character, Best Choreography, and Audience Favorite.) Clemons’ day job: Video Production for ARES Corporation.
2010 AWARDS: Best Ensemble Acting and Honorable Mention for Special Effects and Writing.
Factoid: Adam Mayfield (who starred in Rushin’ and Love Struck) landed the role of Scott Chandler on ABC’s All My Children shortly after the second film wrapped. More info: www.sbjfilms.com and www.48hourfilm.com.

The 48 Hour Heist By Sue Mayfield Geiger Jason Clemons’ house in Southeast Houston has been the scene of many bizarre happenings over the last several years. For instance, a bloody body was found on his kitchen floor; a kidnapped man was tied up and tortured in his garage; and another man in yellow tights and black cape leapt in front of a moving truck on the street where he lives. Today (Saturday, June 5), there is a dead body in a coffin in Clemons’ living room. (Clemons is on the left in top left photo.)
About 20 people are in various positions – standing, kneeling, squatting and raising their arms. Lights, camera equipment, a boom and clipboards are also present. Nothing out of the ordinary for this moviemaker/NASA subcontractor employee/artist and film buff who heads up and directs the team of Sweet Baby Jesus (SBJ) Films. They are shooting their seventh movie as a team and their fifth for the 48 Hour Film Project – a film that has to be made in – well, 48 hours. But, consider the upfront challenge: They don’t know the genre, plot, or characters, and don’t even have a script. This theatrical madness has been going on across the globe for almost 10 years (five in Houston). Teams must register in advance (a limited number are accepted), show up on a Friday evening at 7 p.m., draw a genre (out of 14 possibilities); then given a line of dialogue, prop, and character’s name that must be used by all filmmakers. And oh, yes, the film (four to seven minutes in length) has to be completed, edited and ready to submit by 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Got it? 48 hours! The SBJ team consists of many dedicated friends and volunteers who have been working together for over a decade. The team’s producer, Michael Darling, says he gets a rush out of having to work on such a
tight timeline. “I like the madness of what we are doing now, whereas Jason gets more excited about the end product,” he says. The genre they drew is “heist.” By 5 a.m., a draft of the script is complete. At 8 a.m., shooting starts at a nearby bar (Fox & Hound), but rudely interrupted by a biker rally (at 8 a.m.? Go figure.) Back at Clemons’ house, it is 1 p.m. and the crew is filming a scene that involves a waiter (Juan Lopez) in a sombrero holding an enormous bowl of guacamole next to the coffin at the wake when a drunken woman (Caroline Parker) wanders up wanting more dip. It is about take number 15, the guacamole is melting under the hot lights and Clemons finally says, “That’s a good one.” Everyone relaxes during a five minute break. Focused and serious, Clemons takes the crew outside to get some day shots before heading downtown for a police car chase. Now the dead body (Evan King) is inside a convertible with only his feet sticking out, headed for the George R. Brown Convention Center with actor Kyle Jones as the getaway driver. - Cont. on Next Page

BEAUTY URBAN LEGENDS AND MYTHS
Style
SCEN
By Heaven Padgett
WE ROCK AT...
Don’t pull out your grey hairs or two will grow back. Rinsing your hair with cold water will make it extra shiny. Have you heard all of these old wives tales about your hair? Have you ever wondered which ones were true or which ones were just urban legend? Being a stylist, I hear these adages on a daily basis and through 20 years of experience I can pretty much tell you which ones work and which ones don’t. And the ones I wasn’t too sure about I just did a little research to become your Hair Myth Buster!

Legends that stack up to be FALSE:
Photo & Hair by Heaven Padgett
1. If you pull out a grey hair, two will grow back. If this were true I would constantly be pulling out my hair so that two will grow back. I can always color the grey hair on my thick luxurious mane. 2. Shaving makes hair grow back thicker. Again, if this were true, we would all be shaving our heads for thicker hair right? This myth does not take into account “tapering” that happens when a hair grows long. Lopping it off at the root will make the hair seem coarse, but when it grows back out it will become thinner at the end.
Get your Summer !! SASS On
3. You can “repair” split ends. No. You cannot repair ends that have split. Splitting is a result of dry, untrimmed or damaged hair. Once it splits you must cut it off or it will continue to split up the shaft, causing further damage. There are lots of products out there that act as a “cosmetic”, temporarily repairing the hair but as always, prevention is the best medicine. 4. Come to your Haircolor Appointment with dirty hair. Again, False. This used to be true when chemicals were much harsher on the hair, but these days your haircolors contain buffers and conditioners that keep the hair in better condition. If the hair is too dirty, these gentler haircolors can’t penetrate the hair completely and evenly. Your best bet is to arrive with clean dry hair to ensure a perfect and even result. 5. Brushing your hair 100 strokes a day makes hair healthier. Not true. In fact, over brushing or using the wrong tools can actually damage hair. This myth was true many years ago when people did not wash their hair very often and were not privy to the amazing conditioners on the market now. The brushing distributed the scalp’s natural oils to the shaft and ends to act as a conditioning agent. But now we have great products, so a simple brush to get the tangles out is adequate.

Burger Bonanza
Declare independence from your home grill
BAKKHUS TAVERNA'S MADUSA BURGER By Betsey Ennis Summer = Sun, water, relaxation, tasty refreshments and burgers grilling on the fire. Seriously, though, in THIS weather, who wants to cook in the heat?! Leave the grilling to the pros, and let these diners cook up some of the tastiest, most creative beef-n-buns for you and your entourage. You: Just kick back, enjoy some cold ones and let the good times begin! The best part is, no grill or mess to pick up after your gathering! Pass the ketchup, will ya? Bakkhus Taverna’s MADUSA BURGER: This bad mammajamma is topped with four cheeses (Swiss, American, Provolone and our famous Fire Feta). Beneath all that cheese are sauteed jalapeños, bacon, tomato and onion. Then we top it with the kicker: Homemade onion rings to make it look like Medusa! Swamp Shack’s SASQUATCH BURGER: Clear the way for this "monster" triple patty burger! This towering burger combines one Swamp Hog, one Water Moccasin and one Racoon burger with three slices of Cheese (American, Jack

CULLEN’S TEXAS BURGER and cheddar) piled high with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on a fresh bun. This dish is served with your choice of French fries or onion rings. One-and-a-half pounds of beef for $14.95. (Each of Swamp Shack’s burgers are hand made patties mixed with tasty accent flavors: The Swamp Hog patty has bacon; Water Moccasin has medium spice jalapeños mixed in, and the Raccoon is a red wine Burger.) T-Bone Tom’s PARADISE BURGER: Two 1/2 pound charbroiled burgers and double cheese, served with steak fries. Mackey's THE POPS BURGER: Chef Mackey created this burger “that is fit for a king!” They take ONE POUND of lean ground beef and cook it to your temperature preference and top it with chef's secret blend of seasonings. Then, they and melt cheese and add sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and onions. All this is sandwiched in a bun that is 8 inches in diameter! The burger is
SWAMP SHACK’S SASQUATCH BURGER so large, it fills the entire plate. French fries are served in a bowl on the side. It will literally inspire “oohs” and “ahhs” when being served. Chef Mackey says, “Come on by and let us cook one up for you!” The Grille at Cullen’s THE TEXAS BURGER: All Cullen's burgers are halfpound Angus beef, grilled to order and served on homemade buns with fresh cut French fries. The house favorite is The Texas Burger. Priced at $7.95 every day, this burger is a chicken fried Angus beef patty, slathered in Dijon mustard mayonnaise and seasoned with black pepper. On Wednesdays, all burgers are only $7.95 until 6 p.m. Signature Bistro's KOBE BURGER: Texas Kobe beef with farm fresh tomato, heart of romaine lettuce and sweet red onion with side of aoli (mayonnaise), Creole mustard and ketchup. - Continued on Page 20
Dempsey's TKO Burger Challenge This is 4 POUNDS of Angus beef seasoned with their house burger season mix cooked to your liking. Served inside 1 pound of bread and topped with whatever you like. Finish this monster sandwich in 90 minutes, and Dempsey’s picks up the tab (for the burger); plus you get to name it! As an added bonus, first person to finish this burger will be featured in The SCENE. So far the burger holds a 15-0 record including a TKO of SCENE bookkeeper Jason Hilow (at right) . Who’s next?

Wine & Dine or just Fall in Love
at Signature Bistro
By Adam Donaghey Under new ownership since November, Signature Bistro has been completely renovated inside and out. With a fresh new look and an updated menu, the cozy, converted house is the perfect place to wine and dine. With live music on the weekends and low lights in the evenings, the Bistro provides a truly intimate experience. Top it all off with extraordinary chef-prepared dishes and a sophisticated selection of fine wines, and you've got yourself a fine dining destination – without the long drive. The time, effort and service put in by the staff at Signature Bistro is inspiring. Sisters, Elizabeth Grella and Melissa Baccus own the restaurant; but are often seen bar-tending and serving food. Executive Chef Bradley Hamil greets guests whenever possible, garnering feedback on his signature dishes. Patrons feel more like family than customers and there's a welcoming spirit unparalleled with most establishments due to the quaint, homelike layout and small scale of the restaurant. Family-owned and operated restaurants are simply tradition for these two sisters. Their great-grandparents, Sam and Jean Grella, owned the famous Scampi Miramar located both in Boynton Beach, Florida, and Port Washington, Long Island, where high society and famous celebrities would dine in the 1940s and ’50s. As the name implies, the restaurant was responsible for creating and popularizing shrimp scampi. The sisters’ father (also named Sam) and mother, Jan, owned a restaurant in Houston coincidentally called The Bistro, and later played a prominent role in bringing live Maine lobsters to Houston by building the largest live holding system in the Southwest United States. Currently, he is a producer and importer of fresh and frozen seafood which helps in sourcing product for Signature Bistro!
THE SCENE
The sisters continue the inventive tradition by creating unique and savory dishes with the help of Chef Hamil. Graduating at the top of his class at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin and previously working at Brennan’s of Houston, Hamil specializes in fresh, quality cuisine with a modern focus on presentation and design. Ingredients are of the highest quality and sourced locally whenever possible, ensuring less travel time from farm to plate. The Bistro specializes in seafood, with dinner entrees such as lobster ravioli and linguine pescatore, and farm-raised fish, such as Texas striped bass and salmon. Seasonal specials include lobster stuffed with a delectable crab stuffing on Fridays and Saturdays (while supplies last) and a new featured fish each week. Past featured fish include amberjack, black drum, snapper and red fish. In addition to fresh seafood, the restaurant also features fine dining regular dishes such as stuffed quail, lamb chops, pork chop and filet mignon. Quality appetizers, soups and salads are provided to accompany entrees – I, personally, recommend the Turtle Soup – along with a variety of spectacular desserts. Lunch at The Bistro consists of lighter versions of the dinner menu, along with a variety of pastas and the mouthwatering Texas Kobe burger. Look out for the Reuben, Cuban, muffuletta and club sandwiches starting this month! The Bistro, now open Sundays, welcomes guests for brunch with delicacies such as stuffed French toast topped with Cointreau berry compote and Signature Breakfast (poached eggs atop potato crusted crab cakes, topped with a spicy beurre blanc sauce). Happy hour crowds will be especially pleased with the bar menu. Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Signature Bistro’s full bar features tapas such as Texas Kobe beef sliders and tournedos topped with herb goat cheese and wild mushrooms – all under $5! With a sophisticated variety of fine wine grapes ranging from Cabernets, Pinots and Merlots, but also including Carmeneres, Malbecs, and Muscadelles, Signature Bistro is fit for business meetings and wine tastings as well. - Continued on Page 43
