COVER STORY

Mackey’s Bar & Grill elevates comfort food with upscale touch By Mark Evangelista Just like many restaurateurs, Todd Mackey gets ingredients for his upscale comfort food from the usual purveyors, but that’s where Mackey departs from the herd. Creating 90 percent of its menu items from scratch, the appropriately named Mackey’s Bar & Grill offers three salad dressings crafted inhouse as well as all of their sauces including the popular Bubba-Q barbecue sauce that’s sold by the bottle. After more than 40 years in the restaurant business, this executive chef and owner merges the inspiration from his family with aspirations for his grandchildren into a dining destination for the Bay Area. “Everything here is full-flavored and seasoned to perfection,” said Mackey in his signature low and raspy voice. “I get my supplies from the same as the chain restaurants do, but I order premium baby back ribs and 100 percent certified Angus steaks and hamburger meat. Straining all that grease from regular hamburger is not worth it. I’d rather pay for a quality product.” Continuing a legacy from his mother, Mackey sees the establishment of his namesake restaurant as way to provide opportunities for his two grandchildren. Avery’s Bayside Cafe, his previous restaurant on Galveston’s West End, was named for his granddaughter, but since a grandson was added five months ago, he knew he couldn’t get away with favoritism. “We’re all Mackey’s now,” Mackey said with pride. “What I do is for my grandchildren now. I don’t want them to struggle as I’ve done in the past. This restaurant is ready to go and is waiting for them.” Some of the favorites from the Galveston cafe have migrated to the Clear Lake location as the Blue Plate lunch specials. A lunch portion of the chicken-fried steak starts off as a half-pound of Angus beef cutlet, breaded and fried and served

with a vegetable and “smashed potatoes” with gravy. While the sign on the front of the building on the northbound side of I-45 and just south of NASA Parkway reads “Mackey’s,” the simplicity of the name doesn’t do his food justice. This is not an outpost of pub grub but a back-to-basics restaurant serving food everyone knows that is focused on flavor. On the flip side, this is not a bastion of nouvelle cuisine where entrees are meant to be framed art or photographed and not enjoyed. The feast for the eyes here at Mackey’s fills the soul and the stomach as well. “Some people go to a restaurant to eat and leave unsatisfied,” said Mackey. “In 30 minutes, they’re hungry again. With us, when you get hungry again, we already gave you enough for another meal. We regularly give large portions, so there are lots of doggie bags.” The flavors perform like beautiful dancers on the palate. A sampling of the Bubba-Q Baby Back Ribs found them firm, smoky, peppery, tangy and sweet. While fall-off-the-bone delicious, the meat still maintained its firm, mouth-watering texture after that first glorious bite. The Bay Onion Strings take a red onion, which is normally sharp when raw, and turns it into a crisp, lighted dusted and perfectly fried onion that sweetens after cooking. A basket of these is more than enough to share. - Continued on Page 22

Food News Dine Out to Help Fight Hunger in Houston Houston Restaurant Week 2010 is August 1-21, benefitting Houston Food Bank If you are reading this magazine, you probably don’t need a good reason to explore the Houston fine dining SCENE. But we have one for you anyway. Houston Restaurant Week is currently on-going and runs through August 21. Last year was a huge success for the promotion, and this year, it is both bigger, with more than 115 participating restaurants, and longer, stretching three weeks. As part of the Houston Restaurant Week promotion, restaurants located around the city of Houston have designed special menus showcasing their most popular dishes at set prices for lunch and dinner. For $20 a person for lunch and $35 a person for dinner, patrons can experience the highest

quality full course meals at discounted prices. The prices do not include beverages, tax or gratuity. The restaurants will donate $5 from each of these dinners, and $3 per lunch, to the Houston Food Bank. So you are not only benefitting a worthwhile local charity, but enjoying some of Houston’s best restaurants at a great price. For a full list of restaurants participating in Houston Restaurant Week and their designated menus, please visit Houston Restaurant Week's website at www.houstonrestaurantweek.com.

News Flash: Dempsey’s TKO Burger goes down! 15-year-old victorious after 15 grown men hit the canvas Move over Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi as the next rising star on the competitive eating SCENE may be from the Bay Area. Denay Luna, who will be a junior at Clear Creek High School in the fall, read last month’s SCENE article about the 5-pound TKO Burger Challenge at Dempsey’s Sports Pub and the 15 men who had failed to finish the burger and decided to give it a try just days before turning 16. “I've always been kind of a bottomless pit and am always hungry,” explained Luna, who throws the shot put for the Creek track team. Much to the surprise of a Dempsey’s staff who have seen large, grown men come to near tears in failed attempts to finish the burger, Luna cleared her plate of burger, bacon, bun and fixings in an hour and 15 minutes. She became the first to complete the TKO challenge, a challenge many thought impossible if not dangerous. According to Luna, she “didn't eat the night before or the morning of and was absolutely starving” when she started. “I gobbled the first half of the burger down in 15 minutes, but after that, things got a little tricky,” Luna said. This was Luna’s first attempt at a competitive eating challenge, but “ if I see any other competitions I'm sure I'll give them a whirl.” The SCENE will keep you posted. - John Ennis

The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series Chef Bradley Hamil Signature Bistro 1918 NASA Parkway, Seabrook • 281-474-4455 Experience: I have been in the hospitality industry for 15 years starting out as a busboy and advancing to every station in a restaurant kitchen. I went to the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu – where I graduated top of my class – and came back home to work at what was the number one restaurant in Houston, Brennan’s. I have worked in all types of restaurants in various positions from line cook at the Embassy Suites to Sous Chef at Avery Ranch Country Club in Austin. I’m finally getting the chance to show my talents and skills as the executive chef of Signature Bistro. Specialty: My specialty is great food. I don’t limit myself to one specific thing. Signature Dish: Those would have to be my turtle soup or my potato crusted crab cakes with a spicy beurre blanc. Please share one special cooking tip or technique with our readers: Don’t over cook food, be it vegetables, fish, meat or poultry. Everything has a fine line of when it is cooked and when it is overcooked the challenge is walking that line. The only way to learn is to do it. It’s not something you can read about. The new Edgewater Development and marina, pictured above in renderings will eventually add more than 2600 new residents to Webster.

Webster: Continued from previous page:

Webster Mayor: Floyd Myers; Webster Economic Development Corporation President: Donna Rogers; City Manager: Wayne Sabo; Economic Development Dir.: Dr. Betsy Giusto

Being midway between downtown Houston and Galveston doesn’t hurt Webster’s high profile presence. “We’re perfectly positioned in the nucleus,” says Giusto, “so you can’t miss us. We may be just 6.7 square miles, but we accommodate 24 cities in our trade area, so we may be small in terms of square miles, but we are mighty in terms of commercial vibrancy.”

Incorporated: 1958 • Square Miles: 6.7 Population (within city limits): 9,000 Population (within trade area): 3,200,000

While an older residential area of Webster is known as Webdale, the newest residential area is the spectacular Edgewater Development, a 574-acre master-planned community featuring upscale homes and villas, plus a marina that can accommodate powerboats up to 50 ft. This new community will eventually add over 2,600 new residents to Webster. Thus far, Coventry and Newmark are the homebuilders. There are many opportunities for commercial development in Edgewater as well.

Low Taxes: Webster has one of the lowest property tax rates in Harris County What you may not know: Webster has its very own magazine (Gateway) that comes out quarterly; 250,000 vehicles traverse I-45 daily—right through Webster, and (drum roll) the La Madeleine at Bay Area Blvd. and I-45 is the number one revenue-generating La Madeleine in the USA—that’s right, the USA!

Best Utilization of a Parking Lot Winner: Floyd’s Cajun Seafood & Texas Steakhouse Over the span of 100 issues, The SCENE has promoted and covered more than a few parking lot parties, fundraisers and charity events. Earlier this year, the parking lot at Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill was over-filling with friends, family and supporters at a benefit for John Elam. But if we are forced to give an award to one venue for filling a parking lot with people having a great time, crawfish, drinks and live music, it has to be Floyd’s Annual Parking Lot Crawfish Party. This year’s edition was the fourth and possibly the biggest yet. Congratulations Floyd’s!

State of the Lake: Webster Continued From Page 19 In March, Clear Lake Regional Medical Center and The Heart & Vascular Hospital earned the prestigious full Cycle III accreditation for their Chest Pain Center, and they are embarking on a 50,000 sq. ft. expansion to be completed in early 2011. “Webster features the only hospital south of Houston’s medical center to receive this accreditation,” says Giusto, “and we are cognizant of the fact that we currently accommodate a medical service area population that exceeds 1,500,000 annually.” Clear Lake Regional Medical Center also has stellar neonatal and pediatric specialists and facilities.

The Heart & Vascular Hospital at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center “Medical is such a growth sector,” adds Giusto, “and Webster has the ingredients here that make our medical center so desirable—the physicians, the specialties, the facilities, the navigability, and the convenience. As Webster’s medical center continues to expand, it serves as a catalyst for more retail, restaurants, entertainment venues, etc. One helps grow the other.” As far as the impending NASA layoff situation goes, Giusto says she is optimistic. “Certainly we’ve seen many different movements in our day, and this is another stage that has not been solidified,” she says. “We have an extension for the space shuttle program, and the fate of Constellation has not been cemented.” “Space is very important,” reflects Giusto, “and I believe that Americans want to continue to maintain that stronghold, so I don’t see it being diminished to the degree that some think. Again, I’m optimistic and contend that space exploration holds significant ramifications for improving life on this planet.”

MACKEY’S – Cont. from Page 10 While his mother was the source for the peach cobbler and grandmother inspired his blackberry cobbler, Mackey turns bread pudding on its ear by serving it with a Grand Marnier sauce, instead of the usual rum sauce. His resume boasts stops as senior kitchen manager for Landry’s Inc. in Austin, The Old San Francisco Steakhouse in San Antonio and sous chef at The Excalibur in Las Vegas. He’s served athletes such as Michael Jordan and elected officials such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Still, it’s the classic American dishes where he gets the most satisfaction in serving. Oh, and the way he elevates it makes Webster a better place to go eat. “We’re not experimenting, and we know what we’re doing,” said Mackey. “Here we’re bringing back a taste of the country to Clear Lake.” And what a beautiful country it is.

During the events, there will be opportunities for the festival attendees to meet and mingle with actors, producers and directors in the film and television industry. The Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival is the creation of Founding Director, Hal Wixon, an actor himself and his wife Karen have been in the film industry for many years. At this very moment, I'm surrounded by a comforting, slow-rolling breeze amidst the quiet air of the small historic town of Jefferson, TX. The birds are singing, and I'm overlooking an overgrown backyard garden upon a second floor balcony at the Alley-McKay House Bed & Breakfast Inn. Attempting to clear my head, I'm mentally preparing myself for a chaotic nine-day shoot for Eric Steele's first featurelength film, UNCERTAIN, TX. That much more intense, given we just wrapped on Clay Liford's WUSS (previously MINOR IN POSSESSION) only a few days ago. To be shot entirely on location in Jefferson, Marshall, and Uncertain, TX, news of the film shoot has already spread like wildfire in this small, tight-knit community. While much of pre-production such as casting, preliminary crew hires and location securement, was initiated prior to principle photography on WUSS, logistics regarding photography, lodging, scheduling and general production were all tackled over the course of two 15 hour days. In other words: We're nuts! But even in this brief, peaceful moment, I can't help but reflect upon the absolute insanity that was WUSS. By and large the shoot went smoothly, albeit with ultra long hours. The actors really nailed it take after take and the entire crew was on point. Like all productions, however, the set of WUSS was not without its problems, culminating on the very last shooting day. Utilizing a “poor man's” process trailer (i.e., a Uhaul trailer) we were filming all of the driving scenes. Down to the very last scene with two shots left, our trailer carrying the picture car carrying our actors was pulled over by Dallas PD. Fumbling to find something illegal with what we were doing, the stop ended up merely being an inconvenient delay – no tickets were issued and every-

Lights ... Camera ... Action! body went home. Even more interesting and relevant, considering I recently joined the Kemah Volunteer Fire Department, was a small fire on set from the extremely hot exhaust of a generator. The fire started on the grass just behind the generator and ended up catching a furniture pad covering the generator to muffle the sound. Naturally, the location we were on did not have an accessible fire extinguisher; so we had to grab one out of the grip truck, parked in front. The fire department was called as I put out the fire. Apparently, it was more amusing than shocking, given the fire was so small compared to the intense blast of the dry chemical in the extinguisher. All of this was caught on tape, but then recorded over with footage of Tony Hale – probably a good idea. Speaking of which, for those of you who are “Arrested Development” fans, Tony Hale is an absolute riot and a constant performer. There wasn't a straight face behind the scenes during his time on set. Luckily, no one busted a take! Endearing, sweet and genuinely happy to participate, Hale was a welcomed addition to our cast. Ultimately, even with some minor setbacks, a multitude of locations and complicated scenes with a lot of actors, we managed to pull off a great shoot. The wrap party took place at the historic Texas Theatre, where we showed a blooper reel

and a rough edited assembly of about ten minutes to the cast and crew. All that behind us, we're taking a break from WUSS in order to shoot UNCERTAIN, TX, where the small town vibe has created an interesting juxtaposition to hectic city life of Dallas. - Continued on Page 45

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty. FEATURED ATTRACTION:

Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

PIRATES BAY WATERPARK

Pirates Bay features attractions for everyone with zero beach entry, a large active and colorful Pirate themed water play center complete with a large dumping bucket and an awesome array of spray nozzles, tot slides, and water guns, a 671 foot long lazy river and two large slide towers. Tower activities include fun for both the little ones and daredevils with everything from run-out slides to racing tubes. The feature attraction is the Flowrider surfing machine which provides an endless moving mountain of water to emulate ocean surfing. The park also features a climbing wall, crossing challenge, and a small rectangular pool for lap swimming and programs such as swim lessons, and water volleyball. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our special Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

On the Water HYC sailor crowned U.S. Singlehanded Champion The weather held up for great racing on Pensacola Bay for the finale of the 2010 U.S. Singlehanded Championships, hosted by the Pensacola Yacht Club. The men’s and women’s divisions completed two more races, which proved to be just enough for Houston Yacht Club sailor Leonie Schuurmans to complete her comefrom-behind win in the women’s Radial fleet. Schuurmans dominated most of the racing on the weekend. She won four of the seven races and posted second and third place finishes to overtake Sarah Stubbs (Rye, N.Y.) in the standings. Despite controlling most of the action, Schuurmans had to battle her way back into the lead

BOAT Club Poker Run Awards and Bikini Contest August 7 (Info: 832-275-7663) following a 12th place finish in race three on Friday. "I couldn't make any more mistakes after race three," explained Schuurmans. "I worked as hard as I could to catch up, and kept an eye on Sarah at all times." Schuurmans mentioned she is looking forward to competing in this event next year. This year marked the first time a women’s division was included in the USSC. Stubbs posted a pair of fifth place finishes. Annie Rossi (Oxnard, Calif.) finished third after finishing third and first. She was 11 points off the pace.

HYC SAILOR QUALIFIES TO REPRESENT USA Houston Yacht Club sailor Parker Hughes qualified at USODA Team Trials, an event recently hosted by TCYC, to represent the USA in Belgium at the Topsport Vlaanderen Nieuwpoortweek 2010. Parker and his teammates had tough competition that week against the strongest of European sailors. After two days of sailing, the kids were grouped into 2 fleets, gold and silver. Parker went into the silver fleet as his aggressive starts earned him three OCS’. He got 2 bullets on the last day of racing and finished an impressive 4th in the silver fleet. He also managed to soak up some of the local Belgian culture, by visiting Bruges. Parker returned from Belgium and competed in both Texas Youth Race Week where he ended up 5th in blue fleet for the week and the USODA National Championship in Deltaville, VA, earning a 6th in Silver Fleet. He flew out the night Nationals ended to London and made his way to Weymouth where British Nationals began the next morning.

HITTIN’ UP STYLE IN THE CARIBBEAN SCEN

Style

By Heaven Padgett

Vacation destination: St. Maarten/St. Martin St. Maarten is a beautiful 37-square-mile island in the Netherland Antilles/French West Indies that is blessed with 37 sparkling beaches. The island is rich with culture as it is the only island that is ruled and governed by two separate governments. The flavor is definitely different in language, money, food and style and gives you the feeling you have traveled the world while remaining on one tiny Caribbean isle. This quaint island boasts some of the most amazing, awardwinning international cuisine in the world. It covers just a small amount of earth, yet is home to over 420 restaurants. Whatever your palate, you will find it in St. Maarten. My favorite aspect of St. Maarten is the shopping. Everything on the island from champagne to caviar, from jewelry to electronics is fully tax- and duty-free. The style here is casual but fashionable. Nearly every restaurant is open air, so dressy, stuffy clothes are never an option. The temperature stays warm and mild throughout the year, but it gets hotter in the summer months, so the less clothing, the better!

STYLE: Continued from Page 43

Ladies can still make a fashion statement in a tiny dress as long as it has a little sparkle. Everyone there wears jewelry which can dress up any look. Blanc du Nil is one of my favorite clothing stores, selling pure white linen pants, dresses and dress shirts. This type of clothing is amazingly comfortable in the hot, sometimes humid environment. The French side has a couple of spots that are clothing optional, if you prefer no tan line!

The nightlife on the Dutch Side of St. Maarten is non-paralleled. Bliss Bar hosts world class DJs and spills out onto the sand. You can relax in the neon pool and dance until 6 a.m. You can watch airplanes land just a few hundred feet away at the famous Sunset Beach Bar that turns into a club late at night. You can attend a Fireball party on Kim Sha Beach and a Full Moon Party on Friar’s Bay (French side). Tantra is a state-of-the-art dance club where you can dance the night away, or you can go to movie screenings on the beach by Bamboo Bernie’s if you’re in a mellow mood. High-end piano bars like Soprano’s and The Red Piano serve amazing 25-yearold scotches and mind-numbing cocktails. The French side has many laid back lounge and pub-style venues. My personal favorite being Calmos Cafe where the sunsets will give you chills. You can have dinner and drinks on the beach while the water rolls across your feet. They carry an amazing selection of homemade rooftop rum that will leave you in an island haze. And don’t forget, Saba, Anguilla and St. Barth’s (playground for the rich and famous) are just a short boat ride away. Some of the most expensive yachts in the world can be seen in Simpson Bay Marina where you can hob nob with the passengers and maybe get lucky enough to get taken for a spin. St. Maarten is a shopper’s paradise and a diner’s haven. It’s the ultimate in vacation style and luxury. November through April is prime time with Regattas and many other events to play at. Many beautiful resorts and condos are available. So next time you are in the mood for a vacation get-a-way, consider this remarkable island to lower that blood pressure and totally rejuvenate!

Film Column • Continued From Page 28 It's now 12:30 a.m. and call time is six-and-a-half hours later. The house is silent, save for me, clicking away on my computer. Tomorrow we begin a brand new endeavor and my exhaustion is overcome by my anxiousness. I'm certain most of the crew is feeling the same way, having also just worked on Liford's film. I'll say it again: We're nuts; utterly nuts. Thankfully, we've got an amazingly talented group of individuals taking on this task. I'm once again partnered with my right hand man, Daniel Laabs – my production coordinator and friend. My wrap present to him after WUSS was a crumpled up one sheet for the film, TRASH HUMPERS, I found in the garbage at the Texas Theatre. While this seems odd to most of you, I'm sure – it meant a great deal to Daniel. Although I'm super happy with this serendipitous find (Seriously, watch the movie, and you might begin to understand why it's so great!), this time I might need to spring for a bottle of Jim Beam. As silly as this will sound, I'm uncertain about where this film is going to go; although I'm quite certain it will be something great. Having a smaller cast and crew and a shorter shooting schedule in an intimate location will surely create an entirely different vibe. But that's what movie making is all about. If it's the same old thing every day, we wouldn't be so driven to do it. This raw intensity is my passion and what fuels me – I can never stop making movies.

SOS (Save Our Shore)

Spec’s Signs on as Title Sponsor of the Brewmasters International Beer Festival

from Abita now available! Last month we featured a new nationwide fundraising effort launched by Abita Brewing Company to assist those impacted by the oil spill disaster. The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner. 75 cents from every bottle sold will go to charity. Related retail merchandise (hat, tee shirt, lapel pin, decal and car magnet) will be sold and 100% of net proceeds will benefit the SOS Fund. According to Jack Law of Faust Distributing, the 22-ounce bottles are now available for purchase. So get out and enjoy this special release while helping clean-up efforts along the Gulf Coast. "We feel compelled as one of Louisiana's most cherished brands to help our coastal families as they struggle to survive," said David Blossman, President of Abita Beer. "We're committing our time, talent and resources to help our fellow citizens through this disaster." Abita pledged that 100% of money raised would go to charity. Abita Beer is the oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast and the 17th largest craft brewer in the nation.

Spec’s Wine, Spirits and Finer Foods has joined the Brewmasters International Beer Festival as the title sponsor. The participation of Spec’s highlights the festival’s appeal as the largest scale beer event of its kind in the state of Texas. Festival promoters and Spec’s management are excited about the partnership and expect Brewmasters to become a “must-attend” event for beer connoisseurs from all over the country. According to Food and Vine Production’s Constance McDerby, a co-producer of the festival, Spec’s will be a vital partner in the four-day event. “We’re delighted to have Spec’s come aboard and lend their name to our event as a title sponsor. Forging a partnership with a company of their caliber that is wellknown and respected in the community is very exciting. The combination of Spec’s and Brewmaster’s is a natural fit and we are looking forward to a great beer festival.” The first annual Brewmasters International Beer Festival will be held Labor Day weekend Sept. 3-6 at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island. The four-day celebration will showcase over 300 international, domestic and local Texas

brews with three signature events - the BrewTopia Beer Garden, the Brew Ha-Ha Grand Tasting and BrewLicious in the Ballroom – plus homebrewers demonstrations, a charity golf tournament, live music, beer and food pairing seminars featuring renowned chefs, and educational events and expert speakers. Festivities begin Friday, Sept. 3 with the 3 p.m. opening of the BrewTopia Beer Garden. BrewTopia will feature great live music, food and of course beer! Vendors from all over Texas and beyond will help transform the Poolside Terrace at the Moody Gardens Hotel into a genuine old-country beer garden. And the best part of all is that entry to BrewTopia is free, although the donation of canned goods or spare change is encouraged with contributions going to benefit the Galveston County Food Bank. BrewTopia will be open from 3-8 p.m. Sept. 3; 12-6 p.m. Sept. 4; 12-8 p.m. Sept. 5; and 12-4 p.m. Sept. 6. On Saturday, Sept. 4, the festival will be highlighted by the Brew Ha-Ha Grand Tasting in the Moody Gardens Expo Arena. Featuring over 300 international, domestic and local Texas brews, the Brew Ha-Ha Grand Tasting is your chance to sample some of the best beer in the world.

The Southern California blues-rock band Great White first took a bite out of the rock scene in 1984 and has never let go. The band’s soulful, blues-based signature sound went against the Glam-Rock grain of the 1980s and helped turn the songs “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” “Face the Day,” “Rock Me” and “Save Your Love” into international hits. In addition to their unique sound, the band also set themselves apart from the ’80s music scene lyrically. Vocalist Jack Russell sums it up simply. “I’m not trying to be some innovative lyricist. The songs that have always been memorable to me were the ones that were simple and basic, that remind me of a situation in my life.”

T-Bone’s with Crossroads on stage and the happy hoppers got in their workout at the Monkey Bar (a great crowd) with Sign of the Scorpio. It was the first time for us to catch both of these bands and we certify them as “SCENE ready-toSign of the Scorpio at Monkey Bar party bands.”

TOUR STOP CLEARLAKE: Here's the skinny... Scout Bar persevered landing the Sick Puppies show after a few hiccups earlier last spring. Not many Virgin/EMI artists play in this area and we had to check it out along with what was described as one of the quickest sell-out crowds. Emma Anzai poured out colossal energy amongst the best we've experienced. The down-toearth "get-to-knowyou" intercourse between the audience and Shimon Moore in prime Aussie form had us flashing back to Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) – a good thing. In "Unison" describes the night and Sick Puppies at Scout Bar with the intimate close up settings and arena-volume energy. Roll all of the above together, and you have what could very well have been the best show of the year, and the year's just only half way through.... Whew!!! CTRL-ALT-DEL! I failed last month to properly credit Kandy Lawson and Danny D for their contributions to the Clyde Dempsey write-up last month. My bad! A beautiful turnout of family, friends, and musicians came out for Clyde's Memorial. All good.

Over at Zone 504, Texas TNT was cranking away helping us celebrate Lydia Lorthrop, a long-time friend of the SCENE, who is heading off to pursue her new beginnings. We wish her the best. Down in Bacliff at Katie's, we finally got our chance to see Tony Vega from the Heights and enjoyed a pleasant evening of great music from the tight threepiece group. One cool thing they do is play pretty much without a set list, transition along as Tony feels what best suits the moment, on the fly and oh-so seamlessly. Count the bands you know who gig out like this, and you get an idea now of the caliber of the Tony Vega band. Slick! So there you have it folks, 100 issues of live music news about the places, bands, and events we've enjoyed with you out there Crossroads at T-Bone’s on the SCENE. The best part is looking forward to what's ahead and 94.5 Buzz gave us a good start bringing back local favorite Brian Carrion with The Crisis and CB Kings for a kick-butt reunion gathering of friends, family & fans. Thanks, A.D.!!! We've enjoyed meeting the many of you out there and being a small part of the ever so many benefits, events, venues and gigs this magical area has to offer. LOOSE NOTES Cont. From Page 58 This was our first time to hear them and they easily landed a spot on our most danceable band list. Crisp and clean, these cats don't play a song that can't be danced to. Spiny Norman's also been spotted at Pier 27, where Shun continues to bring in quality acts. This month, we caught the HOU band. I only met my Texas TNT @ Zone 504 predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, twice. I’ve heard about the many types of music he loved, and I’ve got a hunch he'd like Pier 27. A favorite hangout of Jim's was the Cockeyed Seagull where this month, the crowd gathered for Mark Fenton's birthday celebration with music from Hourglass with guest performances from Katrina, Tom Rogers, Cisco, John Honda, Scooter & Terry, and Bobbie & Steve Revak. Happy Birthday, Mark! Hey, mark your calendars and check out the Green Parrot Music Festival August 21. It should be a blast! Check it out!

Hector Santos was showing off his new group, Hex, anchoring down the side stage with what hopefully will be more to come. Five local bands, five thumbs up.

------------------------------------------------GOOD KARMA MENTION: OPERATION FINALLY HOME: The afternoon plans started off to check on several bands opening for Ted Nugent. Last time I saw Ted was with the Amboy Dukes opening for Blue Oyster Cult a way long time ago. We were curious if he still had chops... The karma was in the air everywhere for the cause and the music was exceptionally inspired. We got to check out the new Ted Nugent @ Operation looks and were pleased. A.J. FInally Home Ramos was presenting his many styles of music with WRAC and Organized Chaos, and we were able to confirm Shawn Pritchard amongst the most energetic regional frontman happening, Lost2gether making a surprise appearance sporting a full band and their new CD of originals. We've enjoyed Danny Painter and Meggie Wiggins as an acoustic duet last year. I wondered where they went, and got blown away with their new full stage. More please! Overdrive showed off a

Hey, remember Chad Lucas from Magnolia at the League City Texas Music Festival? He blew away the crowds. Well he did it AGAIN opening up on the main stage making the kind of music not often heard from an Chad Lucas @ Operation FInally Home acoustic guitar. We thought Chad's band was crazy good then, and now we know so for sure. Catch these guys for a set or three if you get the chance. Nitty gritty time... Headliner Ted Nugent had no trouble stirring up the crowd with his message and is ever the guitar-playing monster we remember from the Fang Tooth and Claw album tour. Simply put, the day rocked for Operation Finally Home. This band of volunteers led by Dan Wallrath and Daniel Vargas, is based out of League City, gaining nationwide recognition on their deeds and totally got it right. Check them out (www. babasupport.org) and be a part. Organized Chaos @ Operation FInally Home

Nothing More @ Pinches

Loose Notes by Andy Eng July was sizzling on the live music scene. The music was most excellent and we enjoyed mingling with all of you out there.

Dempsey's fired on all burners bringing in SCENE Kemah Jam @ T-bone Tom’s over-the-topper Tarantula where they took command pulling off the Immigrant Song in their first Crossroads @ T-Bone Tom’s set. Think of the last time you heard that song live... Get it? Pinche's said "Not here!" to the rain during their Summer Bash. Pandemic, Carmechi, and Nothing More poured torrents of multi-spectrum rock ranging from "mezzopiano" to "blastissimo" and "Adagio" to "Vivo" -- Most impressive, Wood & Wind @ Heads -N- Tails most powerful. We rerooted with the Bay Area Bluegrass Association's summer jam at the Johnny Arolfo Civic Center-. It looked like every seat was taken at this cool gig. Continuing last month's search for places to enjoy music with casual conversation, I added Don Julio's new listening room to the list with Signature Bistro and Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack. Westbound had a full room and it was very similar to Kelley McGuire's setup at La Brisa on I-45. Speaking of La Brisa, we dropped in at one of our favorite outdoor patio music SCENEs for COLD margaritas, fish tacos and Spiny Norman. SCENE AWARDS: Once every 100 issues we hand out some hardware | Issues 1-100

Best Concept Involving Adult Beverages Winner: Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill "Want a wax with your wash? How about a bloody Mary or a Texas craft beer?" Well, it doesn't go exactly like that when you pull up to the coolest carwash I've ever seen when greeted by an attendant at your car – but it’s pretty close. I first ended up at Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill last year when it was the only local venue showing an International UFC Pay Per View from England live in the afternoon instead waiting and showing the replay that night, which they did also. I'm not a car wash guy. At least I wasn't. But that all changed that day. Something about sitting back in a leather recliner and watching a UFC PPV with an adult beverage while an elite team of car wash professionals with lambs wool mitts restored AWARD my ride to a condition that surpassed the day I drove it off of the lot. But it doesn’t stop with the UFC, as Hugh & Jeff’s has all kinds of attractions to keep you busy including pool, darts and video games. There are plasma screens at every angle and a 300” HD screen for special sporting events.

SCENE

Based in a huge two story building, the car wash has undergone a number of upgrades and reconfigurations in the last year including the addition of a stage for live music and, more recently, the addition of a huge bar and a draft beer system. Promotions are many and always changing. In August, “Power Hour” is every day from 6 to 7pm. Double Down Karaoke is on Thursday evenings and bands performing at the car wash include Organized Chaos (Fri., 8/6), After Party (Fri., 8/13), Daze Past (Fri., 8/20) and Johnny Falstaff (Sat., 9/21). The facility is available for private parties, and gift certificates and VIP Car Wash Packages make great gifts. - John Ennis
