COVER STORY

THEY’RE BACK! PASS IT ON Merlion On 4th: Thai Food for the Soul By Sue Mayfield Geiger “People come in every week saying, ‘Wow, we didn’t know you had reopened,’” says Andrew Loebeck, chef and part-owner of Merlion On 4th in Seabrook. Not only did they reopen in February 2009, they now have a full bar, outdoor patio and a few new menu items. But basically the menu hasn’t changed much from the one that customers loved on Second Street before Hurricane Ike claimed that location. Many locals will recall that the Bay Thai was originally opened in that spot back in 1990 by Andrew’s father. Andrew took over in 2004, changed the name to Merlion, and established an instant reputation of having one of the best Thai restaurants in the area. “I grew up learning culinary skills from my dad,” says Bangkokraised Andrew whose father is now retired. After Ike, Andrew had to regroup. With no flood insurance, it wasn’t easy. Brooke and Ray Villanueva (friends who formerly helped out on Second Street) stepped up to the plate and became Andrew’s new partners.

tasty standby—Pad Thai.

“It’s a good thing,” says Ray. “Andrew with his cooking expertise, Brooke with her business savvy, and me with my production experience brings it altogether.”

There are also off-the-menu items, plus Andrew can accommodate anyone with food concerns or allergies—including preparing dishes that are gluten-free or vegan. Even a vegan fish sauce is available.

Now known as Merlion On 4th—with deep crimson walls, black upholstered booths, tables laden with white tablecloths—the new place at 1301 4th Street is intimate and homey (22 tables inside and four on the patio). Art from locals decorates the walls and is for sale.

The full bar offers drink specials like ginger, blueberry and pineapple martinis, and there are 57 varieties of wines to choose from (you can taste most of them before you buy). “People come here because it feels like home,” says Ray. “Even if you’ve only been here one time, Brooke will remember what you had, the spice level, the wine you ordered—we are very service oriented.”

It’s hard to find a bad review written about Merlion. Just “Google” and read the raves and kudos from customers as far away as Tomball. Why all the hoopla? Does Andrew have a magic touch? “I guess,” he answers shyly.

Special occasions are important to the Merlion staff. They love to spoil you on your birthday or anniversary, especially if you like champagne! A couple who became engaged at the restaurant recently got married there. Merlion is available for private parties, they offer catering, and Andrew will even come to your home and cook a romantic dinner for you and yours.

“It’s the fact that he has such a zest for cooking,” says Brooke. “The food is simple, but bold with flavor and always super fresh. Plus it’s the overall experience of dining here—the atmosphere, the wine, the good service.” Using fresh Thai basil packs its own punch says Andrew who explains that Thai basil is much more pungent than regular basil. Appetizers include Merlion Soft Spring Rolls (hand-rolled after you order them) and Crabmeat & Cream Cheese Rolls. House faves: Merlion Signature Dish (pan fried fish with delicate red curry, Thai basil, sea scallops and mussels) and Raad Prick (choice of seafood with curry or basil sauce). Curry fave is the Panang (creamy curry with choice of meat or seafood with avocado and bamboo tips). Wok Faves: Pad Bai Gapro (choice of meat or seafood in oyster sauce) and the always

Open at 5 p.m. six nights a week, you can linger until 2 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. Midnight Sunday-Wednesday (closed Monday). “To be a great chef, you have to have a passion for food,” says Brooke. “You can’t wait to get in the kitchen and cook. That’s how it is with Andrew. Food is his therapy for people.”

buffet. He passed up several promotions with Sysco to move up in the company, and I think he did that so he could spend more quality time with his wife Kitty." – Brad Emel, Classic Cafe owner

A man of many skills, George served as executive chef at Clear Lake area restaurants Jimmy Walker's and Louie's on the Lake, garnering accolades for his prize-winning gumbo. In 1985, George joined Sysco Food Services in Houston as a marketing executive. Sysco recognized his exceptional marketing performance, dedication, service and professionalism with its Torch Bearer's award in 1999 and 2002.

"In 1977, George hired me as a salad chef at Jimmy Walker's in Kemah. Two to three weeks later, he promoted me as the upstairs chef (Edgewater's Supper Club). George was one of the nicest, heart-felt people. He always put everyone else first. He's the type of person you only meet once in a lifetime." – Tommy Tollet, owner of Tommy's Oyster Bar Restaurant

"George was my Sysco rep for 25 years. He was family, and I was with him hours before he passed. He cared so much for his customers, and was always there for you and me! "George was a part of T-Bone Tom's as much as anyone. He was part of our family. He helped because he knew – He knew so many things. George created the rum sauce for our apple pecan bread pudding. Back in the day, he would win so many gumbo cook offs that he was banned from entering, because everyone knew he'd win. He was a breath of fresh air and the nicest man I've ever known. His favorite thing to do was fishing. We hope he is eternally fishing. Thanks for the memories, George." – Anna Kennedy, T-Bone Tom's General Manager George is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Kitty Lewins of Seabrook; sons Jason Billings of San Diego, California and George F. State of the Lake:

Seabrook: Phoenix Rising! Like the Mythical Bird that Never Dies, Seabrook’s Vision Remains Unfaltering

By Sue Mayfield Geiger As Seabrook Deputy City Manager Kelly Templin shows me a 1900 plat map of Seabrook Township, it is a startling indication of the city’s journey toward progress. Today, the village-like town with 11 miles of waterfront has a vision that is set on continuing that journey via economic development backed by an ardent administrative team. Many employees have been with the city for decades – two for 35 years. Founded in 1832 by Virginia native Ritson Morris, a portion of the area was later purchased by Seabrook W. Sydnor in 1895 who filed a plat with Harris County. By 1903, the Seabrook Company of Houston filed a revised layout of the proposed Seabrook Town site. The town attracted farmers, fishermen and merchants. Incorporated in 1961, by 1964, a new bridge was built between Seabrook and Kemah, and growth began. Jennings Island—home of Seabrook Shipyard—was purchased by the Jennings family in 1913 for a paltry sum. The property is now owned by the Fay family, who have done extensive updating to the facilities over the last few years. Blue Dolphin Marina has also spruced up by expanding and adding new docks. Seabrook’s desire is to maintain its small-town charm, but realizes economic expansion is a must. “We would like to provide more opportunity for residents to shop and dine right here in Seabrook,” says Templin. “We have Bailey’s, Villa Capri, Mario’s, Outriggers and so many other great restaurants that all have their unique personality and we want to add to that.” The original Sundance Grill on Jennings Island

took a lot of damage after Ike, but there is some interest in rebuilding by a few investors. Also, building up the infrastructure on the point for a future condo project is a possibility. “There are a variety of development projects on the drawing board for Seabrook,” says Templin, “one that could change the entire complexion of the city,” he adds. “We were rolling along pretty good until Ike hit. We lost 17 businesses, one quarter of our housing stock was flooded, some completely destroyed, then on the heels of Ike, we had a worldwide recession.” Saying how Seabrook recovered from all that due to its resiliency, Templin cautions that economic development is not something you can turn on and off. “You have to follow every lead,” he says, “and if you’re successful in 10% of those leads, that’s extraordinary.” Currently, the Point Project (where the seafood markets are located) has 6.8 million in grants to completely overhaul the infrastructure of the road, remove overhead power lines, and make other massive improvements, which will take roughly two years. Pappadeaux does plan to rebuild after the road construction is complete. (As we go to press, Seabrook is waiting on the go-ahead from the State to begin the road.) - Continued on Page 20

Historic Texas Theatre's Tainted Past, Promising Future When I was in high school, one of the coolest jobs was being a projectionist at a movie theater. Especially a movie theater that gave you a key because of the long hours. Not only did you get to see first run movies for free and have first dibs on all sorts of ubercool swag like posters and film trailers, but you got to take your friends to the movies at like three in the morning to see any movie you wanted. I never worked in a movie theater; but I was the friend of the guy who worked in a movie theater. There was a time where I was seeing every first run print of a movie at no cost and in the wee hours of the morning – oftentimes before the film premiered at the theater. That's pretty darn neat for a kid who just got his driver's license. A mere two days before The SCENE Magazine went to print, Aviation Cinemas, Inc., a brand new venture I'm a part of, signed a lease to take over operations of the historic Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff (south Dallas). Formed specifically to close this deal, Aviation Cinemas is named in honor of billionaire Howard Hughes, who financed the Texas in 1931. The solid concrete, “fireproof” structure was the largest suburban theater in the metroplex at that time and the first in Dallas to have air conditioning. In its heyday, the Texas attracted the Dallas elite with its grand design and state of the art projection and acoustics. That all ended the day President John F. Kennedy was shot and his alleged assassin was captured at the Texas after not paying for a

movie ticket. Soon after that fateful day, the Texas underwent a massive facelift – all of its glorious designs and vibrant colors were covered in plaster, sealing it away from public view. Since then, the Texas has struggled, moving from one owner to another and barely avoiding the wrecking ball. Oliver Stone remodeled the marquee and exterior facade for his 1990 film, JFK, when the theatre was under the ownership of the Texas Theatre Historical Society; and in 1995 the theatre barely survived an interior fire. Today, the Texas Theatre is under the ownership of the Oak Cliff Foundation and, up until recently, has been a community run theater, holding special events and screening films using modest equipment. On August 30th, the Oak Cliff Foundation officially handed the keys to the historic Texas Theatre over to Aviation Cinemas. Our expressed goal is immediately renovating the theatre by installing a 35mm changeover system, tweaking the existing digital projection system to meet I-Cinema compliance, and installing a new adjustable 40 foot screen. This will allow the theatre to screen movies of various exhibition formats, utilizing state of the art equipment. The large screen will be moveable to allow for other kinds of entertainment including plays and concerts. The old school style film changeover system will allow the Texas to screen repertory film prints that would not normally be allowed to be spliced together on a platter. - Continued on Page 28

Cheryl Tiegs is not only a model, but a designer, an author, businesswoman, public speaker and avid spokesperson for health and fitness, the environment and underprivileged children. Cheryl defines “Supermodel” and is acknowledged as an icon for women of all ages. Many of us remember Cheryl’s career starting at 17, with the covers of Glamour, Seventeen and Elle. She eventually graced the covers of Vogue and Bazaar ,and became know as The Cover Girl. She was also the first model to appear three times on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues, and made the cover of People magazine four times, as well as cover of Time magazine three times, most notably for the “All-American Model” cover story at the age of 30. Breaking with convention, Cheryl started a signature line of clothing and accessories for Sears. The ‘Cheryl Tiegs’ line sold nearly a billion dollars of merchandise in its 10-year span, helping turn the company around. Thus, another Time cover for “Sassy Sears”. Cheryl hosted the 13-part travel adventure series, “Pathfinders: Exotic Journeys” for the Travel Channel and was a spokeswoman for “Renewal: A Time For You”, a program created by Deepak Chopra, M.D., which offered practical advice on choosing healthy lifestyle changes for women in transition. She also had her own Sports Illustrated “Aerobics Interval Training” exercise video, and authored her book, The Way to Natural Beauty. She is a frequent guest on shows focusing on issues of fitness, fashion and beauty and her recent appearances include “Oprah”, “The Today Show”, VH-1, E!, “Access Hollywood”, “Extra”, “Tyra Banks”, “Dr. Oz” and many more. In 2007 Cheryl had a role in the feature Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, starring John C. Reilly, in which she and John sang together.

Additional exhibition for small format films and filmmaking will be supported by the addition of 16mm and Super 8mm projection. Plans also include constructing a concession stand and a separate full-service bar in the main lobby and soundproofing the area between the theatre and the bar. Future goals include remodeling the existing balcony into one or two additional screening rooms, remodeling additional areas for lounge space and installing a digital cinema 2K and 3D projector. Currently, there's actually no seats in the balcony area – in fact, it's rather spooky up there and quite dangerous. We believe that creating a barrier between the balcony area and the lower screening area (which seats 650 people) will be an acoustically sound decision. Filling out the balcony with seats and installing additional projectors will allow us to utilize that space most effectively and provide additional outlets to entertain audiences. There's also a great deal of space in the building that could be used as lounge areas and/or green rooms for theatre patrons and/or guests of the theatre.

Texas Celebrity Impersonators Festival: September 18, 11:00 a.m. to Dusk, 600 block of Bradford in Kemah - one block from the Kemah Boardwalk. Tickets are $6 online and $8 at the door; kids 12 and under are free. For tickets and more info: www.TCIFest.com. Splatterfest: September 24 - 26, starting at 6:00 p.m. Friday and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. Grab your camera, Get your crew together and make a horror film in 54 hours (or a weekend) Learn more and register at: www.Splatterfest.com. Films will be screened at the Alamo Draft House October 11 and 12, as part of the Houston HorrorFest. 2nd Annual Houston Film Race: October 1 - 2. This competition challenges local filmmakers to create an original short film (4-minutes or less) in just 24-hours. All completed films will premiere for the public at the Landmark River Oaks Theater. The best films will advance to the nationwide competition for over $30,000 in Cash and prizes. To Register or learn more, visit: www.FilmRacing.com. This event is produced by The SCENE's film columnist, Adam Donaghey!

Our hopes are that patrons will not only come out to the theatre because of the movies, but also to come hang out at the bar and enjoy the intriguing space of the Texas. The bar will have an assortment of bottled, canned and draught beers – including some craft beer selections. Additionally, the bar will have wine and liquor – with a variety of movie themed signature drinks. The wall between the screening area and the bar will be made of glass so that patrons can see what's being screened from the bar area and art work will adorn the walls around them.

a community of filmmakers?

Long term goals for the Texas are to continue the Oak Cliff Foundation's plan to restore the interior of the theatre back to its 1930s era design. The exterior facade and marquee will remain as is – a restoration of the 1960s era. We believe the value of the Texas Theatre is unparalleled because of its rich history. We aim to provide solid movie entertainment while promoting the values, culture and spirit of independent cinema and filmmaking. We're independent filmmakers who now run a movie theater – what better way to foster the creative and artistic aspects of filmmaking and help cultivate

Although theater expansion is certainly a distance off, we've already been discussing potential locations. The Houston area is certainly on the list, given my residence in Kemah. Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty. FEATURED ATTRACTION:

Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

PIRATES BAY WATERPARK

Pirates Bay features attractions for everyone with zero beach entry, a large active and colorful Pirate themed water play center complete with a large dumping bucket and an awesome array of spray nozzles, tot slides, and water guns, a 671 foot long lazy river and two large slide towers. Tower activities include fun for both the little ones and daredevils with everything from run-out slides to racing tubes. The feature attraction is the Flowrider surfing machine which provides an endless moving mountain of water to emulate ocean surfing. The park also features a climbing wall, crossing challenge, and a small rectangular pool for lap swimming and programs such as swim lessons, and water volleyball. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our special Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

The 24th annual Harvest Moon Regatta, the 150 mile race from Galveston across the Gulf of Mexico to Port Aransas, will be held Oct. 21 – 24. The Safety Day is a free, educational forum sponsored by a sub-committee of the Harvest Moon Regatta Committee which is chaired by Cindy Brooks Winton. The forum is open to any sailor interested in offshore racing. “We will cover a wide range of topics for offshore racing, all addressed by professionals. Topics include boat preparation, offshore medication, safety regulations, right-of-way considerations, and entry/docking in Port Aransas at the end of the race,” related Winton. There will also be a safety equipment display and demonstrations for attendees. Over 200 boats are expected to race in this year’s Harvest Moon Regatta. The race is organized by Bay Access, a charitable

With fall approaching, I always look forward to unraveling the mysteries of the changing seasons. After extensive study of the fall fashions, I am excited to get to my two-part report on all the must-haves of the season! This month we will talk about how to wear your hair and makeup and what accessories to begin to look for. Next month, I will be covering the fashions from the most delicious designers in all the land. But for now, use this guide to find the seasons Classics (C) which are things you should keep in your routine for several seasons; the Must Have’s (MH) which are upcoming styles you should look to purchase; and the things that are TO DIE FOR (TDF) which could cost a fortune but they are super-duper fabulous and need to be placed on a lighted shelf.

Make-up this season echos the spirit of the vampire fascination. Pale skin and red lips emulate the thirsty lips of the undead, but with soft lines of charcoal and grey around the eyes in lieu of the stark lined eyes of recent years. Reds are more blood-tinged (C: Heavenly Micro-Bordeaux) if you will with a bluer, or more plum base. Coral is also bouncing down the runway as this season’s color palette includes eucalyptus, dusty rose and oyster. Make-up is soft and elegant, but lips are shimmery as ever. If you go for the red lip, just do a very light eye with soft liner, defined brows and extra volume mascara (MH: Heavenly Volume X Mascara). If you plan to do more color on the eye just play up the lips with a super shimmery gloss (TDF: Liquid Lustre in Blossom). - Continued on Page 45

HITS Theatre will present the American Girl Fashion Show on Nov. 13 and 14 and is searching for area girls to come be part of the show. HITS Theatre is looking for 60 girls to model historical and contemporary American Girl fashions at the show, which will include song and dance numbers. “Our young models provide an entertaining and educational look at how generations of American girls have used clothing to express their own unique style and personality,” said STYLE COLUMN: Continued from Page 40 Hair in the fall is fun and flirty as curls have made a huge resurgence. Soft, bouncy hot-rolled or heat-styled hair will be in order for every fall party and the hair is set to look a little wider instead of taller (remember the '80s?). Piecey, stringy looks are out and super-mega shiny and playful are in. Aquage Uplifting Foam (C) is perfect for almost any hair type and creates the bounce without a heavy or crunchy feel. Curling irons and hot rollers must be used with a setting spray that allows the curl to remain moveable and last throughout the evening. Try Aquage Beyond Body Thermal Setting Spray (MH). To get the incredibly healthy, lustrous hair that is the finest of accessories, try the most technologically advanced shampoo on the market: BioMega (TDF!) Sunglasses remain of the over-sized variety, but this season introduces graduated tints with black or brown frames. Hand-

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE Lords of Acid • Continued from Previous Page My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult was all about the music. There wasn’t much talking and really no gimmicks when the legendary band performed their set. It was just a really good time with that invoked many memories for those in attendance. Almost more like a family reunion than what the tour title promised. But for those who may want to argue the previous statement, I will happily express that MLWTTKK was indeed a “one night stand” for our ears. Then it came. IT was a force Lords of Acid that changed the whole night. It was greater, stronger and more powerful than anything I expected! The venue was at capacity and the whole floor became a pit that suddenly overwhelmed you. The Lords of Acid walked out and anything went at this point. You see worse things on cable television, but it’s different when the action is only a few feet away. Even though Lords of Acid had not been inside the U.S. in eight years and despite the band’s lineup changes; their music had not changed. The Lords of Acid are as relevant now as they were “back then”. Surely, those that bought tickets to the sold out venue would agree. The Sextreme Ball tour is over now, but the memories will last forever.

MELOVINE Has Perfected Their Sound With “BLIGHT” 6.Bleed; 7.Infernal Machine; 8.Blown Away; 9.Cannibal Clouds; 10.Pluto; 11.Terminal

What I like about Melovine is their sound. What I really like about Melovine is that they have perfected their sound with “Blight”. The members of the Galveston/Houston based Melovine - Matt Neice (vocals), Jonathan Jourdan (guitar), Channing Sall (bass) and Dexas Villarreal (drums) – have put much effort and heart & soul into the making of “Blight” and it shows. The songs will not disappoint. They are “heavy metal”, but… They are “melodic”, but… Their song elements are a twisted mix of everything that’s right, NO but… This is what’s so great about Melovine’s sound. The variation in the vocals along with a powerful fist of instrumental rock makes “Blight” a CD you need to get into your music collection. “Blight” features 11 tracks of “pure hard rock/progressive/ambient metal fury”. (I think “BLEED” is my favorite!) It was engineered by Mitchell Marlow (Filter/Glasjaw/He Is Legend) and mastered by Sterling Sounds (Metallica/Deftones). Song Track List: 1. Depopulate; 2. The Way You Came In; 3. Across The Event Horizon; 4. How Far Is Gone; 5.Your Enemy;

THE SCENE

Melovine’s discography includes a self titled EP in 2005, “Learning To Lose” EP in 2007, “Melo-volution” EP in 2008 and they were featured on the “Punisher War Zone Judges Favorite” CD also in 2008. “Blight” takes Melovine’s experience and talent and turns everything up another notch. Since the release of “Blight” in late July, Melovine has been on a nationwide tour. They will be in Houston on September 5th to perform for the Texas Buzz Show at Scout Bar. It would be a perfect time to go check them out! Melovine is booked through and managed by Ekho Productions. More information can be located at www.myspace.com/melovine. “Blight” is also available for purchase through iTunes and Amazon.

The Lords Of Acid Prove They Are Still Royalty By Rhonda Meredith

Lords of Acid

INDUSTRIAL DISCO TECHNO ALTERNATIVE METAL ROCK was on all fours and barking with a vengeance on August 11 when the Sextreme Ball 2010 made a tour stop in Houston.

Thrill Kill Kult

My Life With The

As we were standing outside Scout Bar, the line to get into the Lords of Acid show steadily grew… All kinds of people were so excited to see the show that would reunite Lords of Acid with My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult… It had been 15 years since they last toured together. Really, it was all kinds of people. I was particularly envious of another woman’s pair of boots, but that’s for another time. And I could never pull off the studded dog collar look, but it worked for some. As did the blue mohawk. Alas, the doors opened and we were one step closer to the show.

THE SCENE

Clear Lake’s own ERASETHEVIRUS (“ETV”) took the stage right on time and nailed it. They were the perfect opening act. The five unique personalities that bring it all together are what makes ETV an “act” rather than simply saying a “band”. Alex Slay (drums), Chris Hardy and Jeff Smith (guitars) are relentless and powerful with beats and riffs that will get a strong grip on your body. Ben Bordelon (programming,

synth, and vocals) will drive the industrial message into your brain and take hold like something you would see in a science fiction movie. Last but not least, Chris Navasatis (vocals) is the deep throated frontman with moves and expressions like no other.

Next up was a Sacramento, CA based band called Blownload. They were unique and that’s about all I can really say since their music was adult only material. If you see this band back in Houston – keep an open mind. Because after you have opened your mind, Blownload will completely blow your mind. They blew my mind. And with all of the blowing of minds going on at Scout Bar, you’d think, well never mind thinking…you just had to enjoy the show.

SOS (Save Our Shore) from Abita now available! Last month we featured a new nationwide fundraising effort launched by Abita Brewing Company to assist those impacted by the oil spill disaster. The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner. 75 cents from every bottle sold will go to charity. Related retail merchandise (hat, tee shirt, lapel pin, decal and car magnet) will be sold and 100% of net proceeds will benefit the SOS Fund. According to Jack Law of Faust Distributing, the 22-ounce bottles are now available for purchase. So get out and enjoy this special release while helping clean-up efforts along the Gulf Coast. "We feel compelled as one of Louisiana's most cherished brands to help our coastal families as they struggle to survive," said David Blossman, President of Abita Beer. "We're committing our time, talent and resources to help our fellow citizens through this disaster." Abita pledged that 100% of money raised would go to charity. Abita Beer is the oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast and the 17th largest craft brewer in the nation.

Victory Kills: New American Blood Gritty. I like gritty. Pretty boys in pretty bands just don’t seem to do it for me really. And I don’t think rock music is supposed to be…pretty. So while “gritty” is good. I think “raw” is even better. Take “raw” however you want it with Victory Kills – because they have plenty of “raw” to give. Victory Kills is a new alternative rock band bursting onto the scene. Never standing still onstage for even a moment and pumping pure energy coming through the speakers. Facebook. These songs sounded so good LIVE and LOUD as Victory Kills made their debut and performed during the Texas Buzz Show at Scout Bar on August 29th. Outstretched waving hands were in the air as the band threw copies of their first single "Pretty Dirty Things" and t-shirts out to the audience. Currently, they are working on an EP titled New American Blood. Victory Kills is Joe Esquivel (vocals), Jeremy Krimmel (bass), Corey Spahr (drums), Ryan Dove and Joe Montgomery (guitars). VerseCity aspires to inspire others with the gift of song. Their mantra is “Believe in VerseCity!” At 9:45 p.m., Pauline Reese, recently named (the first female) Entertainer of the Year at the Texas Music Awards took the stage with her band. Reese, who is currently 8½ months pregnant, has such a beautiful voice and has never sounded better. Before the show and through a twist of fate, I got to sit with Mrs. Reese in her tour bus prior for an impromptu interview. She is a 7thgeneration Texan who loves Texas Fondue. For all you non-Texas natives, it’s cheese dip. Nine people live on her tour bus and she still had the grace to offer refreshments. On October 19th, her sixth album will be released. But back to the show, it was really an intimate performance with a little insight given to each song she was about to perform. Mrs. Reese mentioned you never forget the name of your first

None of this would have been possible without the help of our community partners: Joe's BBQ, Texas Events, Inc., InTents, and Golf Carts of Texas.”

AMOCO’s “Plugged In Twenty Ten Music Fest” Is A Success By Rhonda Meredith

Verse City

It was a beautiful night in Friendswood on Saturday, August 28th. Centennial Park’s Evelyn B. Newman Amphitheater was alive with a sound check, people were milling around and the smell of Joe’s Barbeque was in the air. Yum. The sound check was replaced with the sound of the Black Eyed Peas song “I Gotta Feeling” (Tonight’s going to be a good night)… and I thought to myself “Yeah it is!” After all, this was the first annual Plugged In Twenty Ten Music Fest put together by AMOCO Federal Credit Union. The proceeds from the free event are to be donated to the City of Friendswood Parks and Recreation to support community-wide services and youth programs. The music festival featured acts from the pop, rap, alternative and country music genres. Something for everyone in the family really! DJ XO kicked it off with some tunes before the show and in between performers. JV2Fresh took the stage a little after 7pm with a rap song giving props to AMOCO. Very creative. I enjoyed his set as he pumped up the crowd.

on the Billboard Charts under Hot Singles Sales and #4 under the R&B/Hip Hop Sales category. Next stop for her is a “Just Say No” tour through Houston public schools. Ms. Ashley was excited to anJV2Fresh nounce her latest sponsor Deréon, which is a business endeavor of Houston’s own Beyonce.

Lauren Ashley was up next and her voice was simply amazing for a 16 year old. In March 2009, Lauren Ashley released her first single “Ambulance” off the “Heart Of A Star” EP. It peaked at #3

Fresh off a plane from touring in Michigan, T.I.B. (Them Island Bois) brought some high energy to the evening! Terrence (T-Moe), Ike Jackson (Ike Jack), Blake Williams (Big Blake) all attended high school together at Galveston’s Ball High School (Class of 2008 represents!). They performed their first release “Johnny Bravo”. It’s a catchy song and a HUGE YouTube hit. All three members are currently attending college, performing at numerous shows, and spending time in the studio recording a mix tape titled: "LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL!" The only rock band on the bill was VerseCity. They are a group of well mannered young men who will surely appeal to teens and mothers alike. - Continuned on Next Page

Introducing Rhonda Meredith FROM THE EDITOR: We are thrilled to announce an addition of long-time SCENE reader, blogger and live music enthusiast Rhonda Meredith to our family of writers. We were going to tell you about her, but she did such a great job telling us about herself, that we’d rather you read it first hand. When you do see her out on the SCENE, be sure to give her a warm welcome! About me? I love music...and photography. I love to write and think words are amazing. Even the word "amazing" is amazing! I grew up in Pearland, and spent two years at Sam Houston State University studying journalism and psychology. Currently, I live on the southside of Houston with my husband, two children, two cats, a fish and a camera. Yes, my camera is a family member. It's never far from reach. I love capturing memories, and I own Texas Rhonda with Mr. Ice Yellow Rose Photography. I always have a few pens and a journal in my purse. Margaritas with no salt make me smile. Please don't dare me to get on the dance floor and dance because I will. And you are coming with me! I love my jeans, flip flops and wearing black. Live music excites me like a kid at a toy store. What can I say? What you see is what you get. So I hope to see you out soon!

Loose Notes by Andy Eng June sizzled, July cooked, and August's music SCENE simply exploded... Brian BC Carrion and KAOS @ Heads -N- Tails the Crisis/CB Kings returned to his Clear Lake stomping grounds kicking off the 101st month of the Saturate @ Scout Bar SCENE's live music coverage. Brian's been solidifying his musical creativity up in Dallas and his new works (available for listening on his facebook) puts forth a confident creative passion with an attention grabbing clarity woven throughout. Folks, you simply just don't hear this combination too often - Most impressive. Just as Dena Blue and The Blue Jazz Band @ Laporte’s Summer Concert Series on the Plaza impressive was A.D. Rowntree (host of the 94.5 FM Texas Buzz) blowing away the ever growing Sunday night Scout Bar crowd with a gusto we had no idea of--Now *you* know too. Speaking of strong stuff, we stopped in at Heads & Tails for some KAOS, a solid group already, getting even stronger with the recent addition of Robin & Scott Paxton (formerly of Mr. Hands Revenge) to the lineup. Conclusion? This is good medicine. :-) - Continued on Next Page

Hey, while on the subject of good medicine, we got totally dosed and good with Season Ammons (remember her from Lady of the Lakes?) at Chelseas and Dena Blue with the Blue Jazz Band at La Porte's Summer Concert Series on the Plaza. Many thanks to Joe and Main 101 (one of the best menus in the region in our opinion) for cluing us in. Dena and the band turned us on to an elegant evening of refreshingly enjoyable jazz that's not often had here Shake Russell @ and judging the crowd, ready for more. COVER STORY

Pier 27 Tavern Celebrates its One Year Anniversary! By Adam Donaghey It's gonna be a sweet September at Pier 27 Tavern! All month long, celebrate the family owned and operated neighborhood sports bar's first year anniversary in League City. With theme parties every weekend, an assortment of live music, regular events and daily specials, you're bound to find something different each time you visit the Pier! The party starts Labor Day with a fantasy fueled nautical theme party – “Mermaids Meet the Sailors.” Ladies, bring your coconut bikinis; guys, sport your sailor hats, kick back and relax on your extra day off! Saturday, September 11, come out for the Pier Beach Party with live music by The Line Up – don't forget your beach ball and bring your sunscreen because it's gonna be hot! and the regular season officially begins on September 9. At Pier 27 Tavern you'll get all the football action you want. They've got all the NFL and College Football packages and enough flat screens to view them at every angle.

Pier 27 Tavern's official anniversary festivities begin at 3 p.m., Saturday, September 18th. Part of The SCENE Magazine's 100th issue Celebration Series, there will be give-aways every hour, a balloon drop, live music from a variety of guest bands, a D.J., and all sorts of food and drink specials! I've also heard that a "very special prize" will be given to one patron each hour in a drawing! Winding down the month, head out on Friday, September 24 for the Pier's All-White Party with heavenly tunes from Down to Earth. Wear your best whites and sip on piña coladas all night long! Regular events during the month include something for everyone every night of the week. Sunday is Sunday Funday with Biker Specials all day long. Monday nights are Service Industry Night (SIN) with Lindi and Poker Night. Tuesday patrons take the stage for Karaoke Night – where the third Tuesday of the month is Gong Night and the last Tuesday of the month winners take home a cash prize. Wednesdays are Big Ass Beer & Buns Night, when, you guessed it, draft beer and hot dogs are on special! Thursday night is Ladies Night and there's live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Let's not forget that school's back in session and that means football season is here. Pre-season games started up in August

THE SCENE

The diversity of the events offered at Pier 27 Tavern doesn't end there – with spoken word poetry monthly, happy hour parties and business card raffles, art events and other special parties and celebrations, the Pier is all about catering to everyone. Co-owner, Shun Wafer, says her motto is “One Pier – One Way.” With all sorts of clientele, the Pier's number one goal is to develop a personal relationship with each guest in order to ensure that everyone feels welcome. In order to show their appreciation for established customers, the Pier has implemented the “Pier Important Person” (PIP) program, qualifying regulars for all kinds of perks like no cover during special events, prizes like logoed items or and other cool benefits. Next time you come in for a cold one, ask your server for details. Come dock your spot at the Pier, located just east of South Shore Harbour Blvd. at 3202 Marina Bay Drive. Book your party or event or just get information by calling 832-8642660. And be sure to get the lowdown of all their events on their website at www.pier27tavern.com.
