OCTOBER 2010
COVER STORY
Stop in at Tommy’s Restaurant Oyster Bar for
October Oyster Fest By Adam Donaghey Oysters are back in season, and there's no better place to get them grilled or on the half shell than at Tommy's Restaurant Oyster Bar. Throughout October head out to Tommy's on Tuesdays and Fridays, 4 p.m. to close, and savor oysters on the half shell for a mere 5 bucks a dozen. Other popular oyster favorites include Tommy's grilled oysters, prepared with butter, garlic, shallots and white wine, topped with Parmesan cheese; and iced oysters Mignonette, prepared with Champagne-vinegar, white wine, crushed white peppercorns, diced shallots, diced jalapeños, and cilantro, served ice cold. In the mood to drink? Try the oyster shooter – one oyster on the half shell with a shooter of Creole Bloody Mary mix with Vodka. Speaking of drinking, happy hour at Tommy's is a classy way to spend a few hours after work with friends and coworkers. From 4 to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, pull up a stool at the beautiful horseshoe bar and enjoy $2.75 domestic beers, $4 house wines and well cocktails, and plenty of menu items from $4 to $9. Fish tacos are always a good choice, and for something daring, try the Drunken Shrimp – shrimp sauteed in garlic, ginger, lemon juice and cilantro,
fired off with Tequila. Tommy's has been around for roughly 16 years now, serving the Clear Lake area. Last year, they remodeled the restaurant and revamped the menu, and it's worked out great. Lately there's been an influx of new concept restaurants – many of them chains – but they come and go. Tommy's is here to stay. “We are family owned and operated,” said owner Tommy Tollett. “We've been here since 1994, and we want to let people know we're here, and we're going to continue serving fresh, scratch-made seafood and USDA prime beef.” But high quality doesn't end with the food. Tommy's has a truly upscale atmosphere and cool vibes all around. Dark hues color the walls, accented with brightly lit orange glass and low hanging lamps. The entire space is meticulously clean and everything is well placed. Perfect for a second date or even a family outing, Tommy's provides an elegant setting and mouthwatering delicacies – and it won't break the bank! The layout of the restaurant makes Tommy's an excellent scene for a corporate banquet, wedding rehearsal or just a large group of friends getting together. The restaurant boasts two private facilities, the Wine Room and the NASA Room, each seating 40 to 45 people and available for both lunch and dinner. Preset menus are available and custom seating configuration is a snap. Got a party of 200 to 300? Rent out the entire restaurant. Tommy's is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday from 5 to 10:30 p.m. They are closed on Sundays, except for special occasions and some holidays. Call in orders to-go at 281-480-2221, and visit their website at www.tommys.com for more information.

The economic development experience of new city manager Marcus Jahns, whose resume includes work with destinations like San Antonio and New Braunfels, will play an integral part in helping League City reach common goals and focus on performance and customer service.

League City: Continued from previous page:
Mayor: Toni Randall City Manager: Marcus Jahns Chief of Staff: David Benson Incorporated: 1962 Population: 71,530 Square Miles: 55 City Motto: Live it—Love it!
Mainly, Benson is energized about developing and fostering growth of small businesses within the community of League City rather than pursuing giant corporate entities. It’s called “Economic Gardening,” which embraces the fundamental idea that entrepreneurs drive economies. The model seeks to create jobs by supporting existing companies, connecting entrepreneurs to resources, encouraging the development of essential infrastructure and providing entrepreneurs with needed information.
History: The city’s origin dates back to 1825 when Stephen F. Austin first settled the area. J.C. League began acquiring land in Galveston County from the G.W. Butler family in the 1890s, and in 1896, he officially changed the name of his holdings from Butler Ranch to League City.
The concept of Economic Gardening originated in Littleton, Colorado in 1987. Since that time, the nation has been watching Littleton and measuring their program's success, noting that they have completely revitalized their local economy and have become a model for economic development around the globe. - Cont. on Page 27
Points of Interest: Main Street Historic District with Victorian homes and quaint shops, over 125 restaurants; four hotels (a fifth hotel is anticipated soon), 620 plus acres of public parks, 11,343 sq. ft. Civic Center, Helen Hall Library, four marinas, three golf courses, Butler Longhorn Museum, Big League Dreams Sports Park, South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center. What you may not know: League City is home to two LEED certified buildings. Curbside recycling (paper and plastic), as well as a drop-off recycling center that takes glass, motor oil, batteries, tires, and is open 24 hours a day. New parks on the horizon: Boundless Playground and Eastern Regional Park.

Sean D. Tucker & Team Oracle to return to 2010 Wings Over Houston No one who has seen a performance by Sean D. Tucker will ever forget it. Tucker's work in the Oracle Bi-Plane provides his audiences with feats that are truly death-defying. More than half of Sean's maneuvers are original and have never been duplicated by another aerobatic pilot. During his performance, Sean will fly the Oracle Challenger backwards at a speed of more than 100 mph, cut three ribbons in a single pass, perform his legendary "Centrifuge" and "Son of Edwin" maneuvers. The G-forces exerted on Sean when he is flying are greater than those on the pilots in modern fighters like the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels. Check out Tucker at the 2010 Wings Over Houston. More info on the event can be found in the center of this issue.

State of the Lake: League City Continued from page 15 “There is a pool of people in League City who are uniquely suited to start these small businesses,” says Benson, “some of which could grow into big businesses. We have access to a lot of talented people here. If layoffs do occur at NASA (or with any large entity in the Bay Area), this is the kind of strategy we think we should be pursuing, because then we could help those who have been laid off. Instead of creating another big environment for them to work in, we would offer them some help with developing whatever ideas they may have on their own. Even in a strong economy, small businesses are an important economic driver, and we believe we can do more to support them.” One of the perks of Economic Gardening is that the city has resources that your average small business does not. For instance, cities have access to demographic databases that can help many small businesses become aware of their target market. So are the days of big conglomerates moving in and hiring hundreds/thousands of people over? Well, maybe not over, but the trend is definitely changing. Benson also pointed to the City Council’s commitment to focus on progress, not politics or personalities, and the fact that their budget recently passed unanimously on first and final reading—a rarity for League City. “We have a City Council that is totally focused on planning—like the five-year long range financial forecast, a five-year capital improvement plan, plans regarding streets, drainage, water, sewer, and infrastructure,” says Benson.
“Many people utilize the recycling center,” says Kristi Wyatt, Public Information officer. “Our City Council came up with a ‘lean, clean and green’ initiative this year to keep our neighborhoods clean, keep our residents healthy, and encourage recycling.” If there is something the city doesn’t take, like computer parts, Wyatt says there is a section on the city’s website providing links to other places that do. “The center itself is well maintained and organized with bins for paper, plastic, cardboard, etc., all labeled,” says Wyatt. “Other surrounding cities may have curbside recycling pickup, but I don’t know of any other Bay Area community where you can drop off glass.” Green building is going strong in League City with ACU Credit Union having built the first LEED certified structure, and JSC Credit Union recently opening their first LEED certified branch. Benson states that League City has a new project stewing that may come to fruition soon that will absolutely turn heads, but the facts can’t be revealed at this juncture. Can he give us a small hint? “Well,” he says, “it will definitely put League City on the map.”
Cafe Under the Oaks
“Recreation is a theme that is big in League City,” says Benson, “with its huge concentration of leisure boats, nice weather, our location halfway between Houston and Galveston, upscale neighborhoods, and lots of land still open for development—that means you have the potential to develop a network of trails and quality parks.”

“A planned addition to the park system is the Eastern Regional Park on Highway 96 that will have a series of soccer and football fields, a community center with gym, and eventually an Olympicsize competition pool. The city is working on getting LEED Silver Certification for the park. Meanwhile, the City is moving toward construction of a trails plan that includes 212 miles of hike, bike and paddle trails. One of the first to be constructed is the Clear Creek Paddle Trail, which could allow users to visit the Butler Longhorn Museum, rent a canoe, put it in the water and paddle down Clear Creek as far west as Challenger Park on the other side of the freeway.

HOMEGROWN TALENT:
Introducing Denise Williamson By Sue Mayfield Geiger
“I thought, ‘this is really what I want to do,’” says Denise, who was eventually signed by Pastorini-Bosby Talent Agency in Houston. They were responsible for getting her an audition for the movie, “Madre Gras,” and she landed the part. More roles started to come her way and she was hooked.
“When I was a little girl, I just wanted to be a dance teacher,” says Denise Williamson. Surrounded by everything having to do with dance as a child (her mother owns a dancewear store), she had a change of heart once the cameras started rolling.
It took about two years to get established, but by film number three, she began to enjoy some recognition. Not only does Denise’s film credits number a dozen, but she also recently shot three episodes of the “Friday Night Lights” television series that can be seen on Direct TV in October and NBC next May.
The 26-year-old Friendswood native now has close to a dozen movies under her belt and working on her first CD, set to be released in March 2011. The CD will include seven original songs—a mix of ballads and upbeat tunes—and is being produced in Austin. Being a dancer/actor/singer has its perks, but is hard for Denise to confess which art form she enjoys most. “I really can’t pick one thing I like the best, and hope to always be able to do them all,” she says. After studying at the Houston Metropolitan Dance Center, Denise went to Sam Houston State where she earned her BFA in Musical Theatre and intermittently performed in TUTS productions. After graduation, Denise thought about going to New York, but a little bit of doubt began to surface and she started to question her future. That didn’t last long, however, as one of her graduation gifts was a studio session for headshots with photographer, Kerry Beyer, who was making a movie entitled, “Spirit Camp.” Denise auditioned for a part and got it. It was her first film experience and she literally fell in love—with movie making.
Of course, show business does not always pay the bills, so Denise keeps her day job (waiting tables) and shuffles between Austin and Houston where she will be appearing next in “The Preacher’s Daughter,” an indie film currently in production in the Bayou City. She recently auditioned for the TV series “Chase” and “Lone Star,” and is set to audition for a dance part in Jack Black’s new movie, “Bernie” (starring Shirley McClaine) to be shot in Austin. The movie is being directed by Richard Linklater who wrote and directed the iconic, “Dazed and Confused.” Right now, work and playing the audition game is her daily routine. - Continued on Page 49

THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER Comes to Houston I'm writing this month's SCENE Magazine film column from a park in southwest Houston. We're on day two of principal photography on SWAMP program coordinator Michelle Mower's feature HD production, THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER. We are shooting on location in Houston and surrounding areas – including a good portion in the Clear Lake area! Starring Andrea Bowen of TV's “Desperate Housewives” fame and San Leon's own Adam Mayfield from TV's “All My Children,” THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER is the story of Hannah White, the estranged daughter of a small town minister who is forced to return to the strict, religious home of her youth where she must confront the troubled relationships that caused her to leave four years before. Cast almost entirely with Houstonbased actors and to be shot exclusively in the Houston area, THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER has been warmly received by the community. Along with the support of veteran Houston film crew with industry credentials, much of the equipment and interns have been provided by Houston Community College. We even have Saint Arnold on as our Texas craft beer sponsor! The film begins when Hannah has hit rock bottom. In her early twenties, Hannah has abandoned her quiet, small home town for the big city. She lives with her drug addicted boyfriend, Zane, who facilitates her irresponsible behavior. Arrested after a routine traffic stop, Hannah finds herself at the mercy of her father, a small town preacher. Required to come back home in exchange for assisting her legal problems, Hannah begins to confront the very
demons that drove her away in the first place. As the film progresses, we flashback to a very different Hannah – an innocent, vulnerable little girl. Throughout the course of the film, we begin to learn some of the reasons why she's gotten so out of control. We see the world from her vantage point as she grows into the young woman who uses drugs and alcohol to escape reality. Cutting from flashback to present day, we also begin to see Hannah find herself. We see that perhaps to find meaning and balance in her life, she had to first confront its chaos. Ultimately, we follow Hannah as she discovers the essence of who she really is. Today we're shooting some crucial moments between the characters of Hannah and her best friend Rachel, played by Austin actress Jamie Teers. All of the scenes take place at an amazing timeless playground, complete with an old seesaw and merry-go-round. We begin with the two characters in flashback mode – when Hannah reveals a dark secret that would drastically change her life. Later we see the two all grown up, reunited after Hannah's returned home. Tomorrow we begin shooting at a church in Alvin. We'll live there for the next four days. A great deal of the movie takes place in the church where Hannah's father is minister. We'll have some eighty extras arriving early in the morning – just after sunrise. And we'll shoot that dark secret. Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty. FEATURED ATTRACTION:
Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.
PIRATES BAY WATERPARK
Pirates Bay features attractions for everyone with zero beach entry, a large active and colorful Pirate themed water play center complete with a large dumping bucket and an awesome array of spray nozzles, tot slides, and water guns, a 671 foot long lazy river and two large slide towers. Tower activities include fun for both the little ones and daredevils with everything from run-out slides to racing tubes. The feature attraction is the Flowrider surfing machine which provides an endless moving mountain of water to emulate ocean surfing. The park also features a climbing wall, crossing challenge, and a small rectangular pool for lap swimming and programs such as swim lessons, and water volleyball. The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. Look for our special Convention & Visitors Bureau racks in hotels and visitors centers.

RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival October 29, 30 & 31 • Johnson Space Center A full moon may not rise for Halloween weekend, but hot air balloons surely will as the 17th annual RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival gains lift Oct. 29, 30, and 31. This year will include many exciting areas for people to enjoy. Radio Disney is back, and will appear on Saturday afternoon. Kids can dance to Disney’s Top 30 hits, ranging from Selena Gomez to the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana, and they can look forward to games, contests, and perhaps winning some prizes. Children will also get a hands-on look at the Clear Lake communities’ antiques and newest fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and rescue equipment during the “Salute to Public Safety” exposition on Saturday afternoon. A new event that will be taking place this year is Mad Science of Houston. This “edu-tainment” area will spark the imagination and wonder of all ages with things like a slime booth, superball factory, and awesome airplanes. The fun doesn’t stop there, as Mad Science brings in a little Halloween fun with bubbling potions and a melting witches head! Speaking of a little Halloween fun, Saturday evening is the Halloween Balloon Bash. Hot air balloon pilots will decorate their baskets in festive Halloween decor, while kids can go from basket to basket to trick-or-treat This has been an anticipated Clear Lake Area tradition, since the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival began in 1993. Balloon pilot Steve Lombardi and Richard Filip, CEO/Regional Owner of RE/MAX of Texas, began this tradition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first manned flight in America. The purpose of the Festival is to encourage young people to study mathematics and science and to inform the public about the contributions aviation and space exploration make to our everyday lives. This exciting event could not be a reality without the great efforts of hundreds that volunteer every year at this event. Festival volunteers receive free admission into the festival for themselves and anyone else in their car, free parking and non-alcoholic beverages while they are working. Organizations and businesses volunteering in groups have a great opportunity to present themselves to the public by wearing shirts or hats that represent their organization. There are still many opportunities open to volunteer, so quickly sign up to take advantage of helping make this beloved event a success! Go to www.ballunarfestival.com to register or call the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at 281/488-7676 for more information.

CLIFTON GRIM
CLIFF MEINHARDT
Matheson: “Early in the morning, watch for balloon teams driving near the main JSC entrance with their trailers in tow, and follow them out to the launch site. Also, unless you're going for a silhouette, attempt to shoot with the sun at your back.” Ennis: “Instead of waiting for the balloons to reach the festival grounds, follow the balloon teams out to the launch site and take pictures of the process leading up to the launch and the launch itself.” Grim: “Understand the schedules and what is going to go on. The Saturday morning launch gives you an opportunity to photograph set ups and launches from very close. The Friday evening glow is the other great photo opportunity. Meinhardt: “Don't just think about big balloons. From a photographic point of view it can also be abstract colors, lines and shapes, it can be people, it can be action, and look at it from different angles, get up close, get down low, its a great place and a great subject to experiment with.”

On the Water Harvest Moon Skippers meeting slated for Oct.15 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Harvest Moon Regatta Chair, Andrea Todaro, recently announced that the Skippers Meeting for the 24th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta will be held on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 pm in the club’s ballroom. Lakewood Yacht Club is located at 2425 NASA Parkway in Seabrook. “Since this is a highly attended event of up to several hundred people, we are encouraging racers to come early to pick up their skippers’ packets at 6:30 pm,” Todaro related. “Then they will have time to review the sailing instructions before the start of the meeting.” The packets can be picked up in the Chart Room which is down the hall from the ballroom. T-shirts and race paraphernalia can be purchased from volunteers in the ballroom lobby. “The Skippers Meeting is a critical one for racers to attend,” stated Lakewood’s Fleet Captain Carl Drechsel, “as additional information will be addressed such as expected weather conditions, any changes to the racing rules or the dockage in Port Aransas.” The Harvest Moon Regatta is a 150 mile race from Galveston to Port Aransas which will be begin on Thurs. afternoon, Oct. 21, and end at the race finish in the channel at “Port A.” As of Sunday, Sept. 12, about 110 racers have registered and paid for the regatta, which, according to Todaro, is ahead of the count at this time last year.
Upcoming Calendar
Pajama/Lingerie Party and Officer Election Oct 16: Turtle Club Racers will be arriving in “Port A” at varying times on Fri., depending on the wind conditions over the Gulf of Mexico. The popular Welcome Sailors Rum Party will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, during late afternoon at the City Pavilion. After a bar-b-que buffet, an awards ceremony will be held where race winners will receive their trophies and the overall winner of the famous Bacardi Cup will be announced. The regatta is a Category 3 Open Regatta for all racing cruising spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts with a minimum length of 27 feet. Over 200 boats are expected to race this year with close to 2,000 racers, friends and family attending the awards ceremony. The regatta is organized by Bay Access, a charitable organization supporting amateur racing. It is hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club. Sponsors include the founding sponsor Bacardi Rum U.S.A., Nautic Yacht Sales, West Marine, Banks Sails, Sea Lake Yacht Sales, the City of Port Aransas and Houston Magazine. “Through the support of these enthusiastic sponsors, we are able to provide a first-class event for our racers,” explained Todaro.

Fall is such an amazing time of year with its cooler temperatures and cozy evenings. Melancholy is the classic sentiment of the season and a subtle angst tugs at us as we find ourselves yearning for change. And while some things in life we have no control over like maybe our jobs or our mother-in-law’s, there are many things that we CAN fine tune- or even change completely! Those things include our haircuts and colors, our make up, our clothing and accessories and even our overall style. Last month we discussed the latest trends in these catergories and next month I will be covering the October Fashion Week, but for now lets get inspired to go ahead- and make the change!

The first step in redefining your self is simple- making the choice! I suggest buying a few hair and fashion magazines. Get inspired. The only way to grow, is to see. See colors, see cuts. Find colors and cuts that look inviting, find face shapes and hair types that resemble your own features. Look at clothing, how its styled, how its pieced together. Tear out these photos and keep them in a folder. Take the hair photos to your stylist to help him/her along in the consultation appointment. This process should be clear and concise. Your hair will not look exactly like a photo but your stylist can see where your mind is headed, and what type of styles you really like. The pictures can be custom fit to your face, your lifestyle and amount of time for upkeep. Be willing to go to a completely different shade. Maybe you could go darker and richer, maybe a little blonder than you have before. What about adding in some red? You will be utterly amazed at the power of a really great hair make over. - Continued on Page 46 The SCENE Style Columnist Heaven Padgett is owner of The Hairem Salon, founder of Heavenly Cosmetics and a member of TEAMQUEST, as an International Guest Artist for Aquage. Don’t be afraid to cut your hair- it grows back. A shorter, beautifully shaped haircut is always prettier than longer hair that is dried out on the ends. Don’t just say, “Do whatever you want.” Have a part in the process. You do not need to know the terminology or exact formulations for your stylist. The magic happens when the clients expectations meet the skill and vision of a creative stylist. The stylist should know how to minimize a large nose or forehead, or lengthen or shorten a face shape. We should know whether to widen a fringe area to accent the eyes, or leave a cowlick a little longer. You supply us with desire, we supply you with skill. We know deep down everyone has a vision of what they wished they look like, but also be open to professional recommendation. Purchase the tools and products recommended to you as well. We guarantee all of our work if you are using the right tools and techniques. Professional products will also protect and lengthen the life of your color work so that you don’t need to do it as often. Invest in your look and it will show on the outside as well on the inside with your new found confidence. Everyone wants to look and feel more beautiful, even when the economy is bad! ESPECIALLY when the economy is bad! Get the most out of your hair appointments and you can have a year round look that is a joy to maintain- not a pain!

As far as fashion, hang the photos of the looks that you like around your full length mirror at home. Just like with any change, you need a daily reminder until it becomes habit. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to start to shift your style. Maybe it’s adding a belt when you wouldn’t normally wear one or even rolling up the cuffs of your pants. Make it easy to alternate handbags and sunglasses by organizing your closet. One of my favorite things to do when in need of inspiration is to plan a go-see day. Invite a girlfriend and just “go-see” stuff. It’s a no pressure day where you can just browse boutiques and stores. Don’t tell yourself you’re “shopping” with the intent to buy. Just walk around and absorb the man-

nequins and displays. Take note of the different kinds of jewelry and accessories. Are the belts wide or skinny this season? How high are the boots, and the skirts? Eventually you will see a few things that begin to get stuck in your mind and you will know what you want. Change can happen. It took a while to get into a rut, and it might take a while to get out, but a fresh haircut paired with a fresh outlook can give you the motivation to experiment. I challenge you to step out this season and try something new. I will give you a full run-way report next month and hope to see each of you out and about sporting a touch of couture!

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE
My Darkest Days Debut Album SHINES By Rhonda Meredith It was just in July that Canadian alternative rock band My Darkest Days opened for Sick Puppies at Scout Bar. Relatively unknown to many in the U.S., they have been steadily building their fan base. My Darkest Days (MDD) debut self-titled CD has been a long time in the making and proves, without a doubt, to be well worth the wait. Nickleback frontman Chad Kroeger and longtime Nickelback producer Joey Moi teamed up to produce the CD and it’s packed with great music and a very cool cover of Duran Duran’s early 1990’s hit “Come Undone” (with singer Jessie James). The first single that has been topping the iTunes’ charts is “Pornstar Dancing”. You will find the radio version of this anthem type song as well as a second version featuring Ludacris on the CD. As for the rest of the songs, there is not one disappointment. MDD’s music is “high energy rock and roll”, but the ballads are crowd-pleasers also. The band says “half of our song lyrics are about partying and having a good time while the other half deal with relationships and life”. “Save Me” says “You’re the only one who matters…only your love can save me…” Immediately when the “thump, thump, thump” of the bass drum is heard, a sense of urgency takes hold of you from within for the entire song. The song “Can’t Forget You” is one you can’t forget! The song’s lyrics “Stop haunting my dreams…please set me free…” will replay over and over in your mind. The vocals are so emotional. Other favorites “Like Nobody Else” and “Every Lie” also have the same appeal. “Without You” has such a beautiful musical beginning. “Goodbye” is about the angst of that moment you know your relationship is over (in this case it was over because of an addiction). But the transitional lyrics toward the end say “Been stuck inside a dream, woke up and I could breathe the air. Been down this road before, I’ll make it on my own I swear”. Within the heavy chorus of this song, you find your
MDD is currently on tour with Hinder, then Papa Roach but will take a short break to headline three Texas shows including an October 22 show at Scout Bar here in Clear Lake. you can) will prove better than therapy.
Potbelly: Continued from Page 54 The band is very unique, funny and truly lives for the live show. Seriously. They plan their songs a certain way and request certain stage light changes to create a mood. Potbelly has been playing together for around three years, but formally just one year. The way they manipulate the music is far beyond that though. Their style is fresh with some songs channeling The Doors or Bob Marley. Potbelly is currently finishing up their second cd with an anticipated early 2011 release date. I got to check out a three song preview (“Seven”, “Dubness”, and “Goin’ Home”). Each have the reggae influence and lyrics you will relate to and singing them out loud (as loud as

inner strength. “Set It On Fire”, a song about lust, seems to be a little reggae inspired. It also has a short guitar solo that, well...sets the song on fire! “Move Your Body” is relentless. This song needs to be in your IPod rotation when doing cardio. “Still Worth Fighting For” offers hope to those in broken relationships. The stand out track on this CD is “The World Belongs To Me”. It is a different type of anthem from “Pornstar Dancing”. It’s a song that can be played anywhere - from graduations to movie soundtracks. You know that part in a movie when the hero realizes his destiny and every fiber of his being comes alive. The song even says “A hero was born from a soul that’s forgotten…” Bottom line: The debut CD is flawless. The lyrics are honest. The musical composition is appealing to fans of many different genres. MDD is on course to be the international break out band in 2010. Easily. You could say the world belongs to them…
I spoke with Potbelly after their show. Completely down to Earth guys who are actively seeking a record label. You can tell the music is in their soul. It’s that good. But the guys were quick to ask, “Did YOU enjoy the music? Did it make you want to move?” Of course it did. They said that’s what they hope for. Their only hope id for those who listen to enjoy the music that they play. The band is Erik Smith (Vocals, Guitars), Erin Massey (Bass, Good Looks), and Marcus McCusker (Drums, Etc.) are Potbelly. You can find them on Myspace and Facebook.

Out in Bacliff? Stop By KATIE’s and Listen To Live Music By Rhonda Meredith When 646 turns into Grand Blvd., you know you are almost there. Nestled in between a produce stand and a dry cleaners is Bacliff’s own live music spot called Katie’s. I got the last parking spot in the front at 9pm on a Wednesday night, but there is plenty of parking behind the bar and on well-lit side streets. Opening the front door, you are met with cool air and lots of banter. The lights from the bar beckoned me to make my way to the back. I dropped myself into a bar stool, a little nervous being there alone and was promptly met with a smiling face saying “Hi! I am “Crazy Lisa.” How can I help you tonight?” She was so bubbly and friendly and greeted me like an old friend. My nervousness was extinguished like a cigarette in an ashtray. I introduce myself to Crazy Lisa and asked “Is there really a Katie?” Why yes, it turns out there was and she was out to dinner, but would be returning soon. So I sat back and watched… and listened. Crazy Lisa greeted patrons with hugs. I swear, there wasn’t a stranger in the room. Katie’s serves ice cold beer, wine and spirits. I opted for a dark red wine this night. It was served in a beautiful glass. It’s the small touches you notice at Katie’s. There were roses in vases placed around the bar. Crazy Lisa said she usually had candles out too. The single bar is shaped like a U and the polished wood was smooth to the touch. There were rope lights and knick knacks. The jukebox sat dutifully along the wall. It knew its place. The James Reese Band was taking the stage this night, so it would probably be silent. A few electronic games sat overlooked in favor of good conversation. The friendly argument at the bar this night was who would win “America’s Got Talent.” “Local Mike” was adamant the guy from Mississippi would win. (He did.)
SEEN BY THE SCENE
I wasn’t the only new one in the bar. Another couple had wandered in, and I heard Local Mike telling them “it was the best bar in
the area” and how “great” the band tonight was going to be. Local Mike was right again. When James Reese went to his zone, he channeled some Stevie Ray Vaughn like nothing I had witnessed before. After about ten minutes, a petite blonde lady in jeans walked in carrying ice bags to fill the beer boxes. She cleaned the bar and checked the food orders. Katie’s serves bar food like pizza, wings, chips and salsa… I knew she had to be Katie. She was. Opening a live music venue was something Katie and her husband had wanted to do. And almost six years ago, they made that dream a reality. Katie’s husband has the connections to bring in the top area musical acts. He is a member of the Groove Kings, and they play at Katie’s every other Wednesday night. Sundays is an open jam session with The Amigos. All musicians are welcome. On Monday night’s it’s Open Mic nights and on Tuesday nights, it’s country music. Did I mention there is never a cover at Katie’s? We also chatted about the bar being the only thing open when Hurricane Ike decided to pay Galveston a visit. Katie still gets a little teary eyed when recalling how the community came together during that time. Many places didn’t make it and she is thankful her bar survived. I almost fell off my bar stool when I found out Katie wasn’t a native Texan. The Minnesota transplant has been here though almost 25 years so I’ll cut her some slack. All and all, it was a great night. If you are looking for live music in Bacliff, stop by and say hello to Katie at 315 Grand Avenue.

The 71’s: Rock and Roll Reaction 1 By Rhonda Meredith The first time I had heard of The 71’s was because of the now infamous Wal-Mart video... If you haven’t seen it yet, go to The 71’s website (www.the71s.com) right now and watch it. You will smile all three minutes. It’s classic. Now, the first time I saw The 71’s perform live was during the summer at Island Star Live/Moody Gardens when they opened for American Idol Kris Allen. The show was exactly how I thought it would be – energetic with some seriously solid and upbeat rock songs. This has been the breakout year really for The 71’s. They have performed on Great Day Houston, the video for their song “All Tied Up” was shown on Channel 11 during the Houston Texans home opener pregame show. The band has been on a statewide summer tour and the best is yet to come. Since the release of The 71’s first full length CD called “We Are Locomotive”, they have been writing and developing the (awesome) idea of releasing three EP’s over a twelve month period. The first EP with six songs and aptly titled “Rock And Roll Reaction 1” will be released on October 15th. “Rock and Roll Reaction 2” will be out in January when The 71's play the House of Blues (Houston). Tickets are on sale at www.the71s.com. The Scene Magazine had the pleasure of reviewing “Rock And Roll Reaction 1” prior to its release. This is not a hard review really. The 71’s have a reputation for quality. They simply will not rush and put music out to their fans and have to say “oops, sorry, my bad” later.
The band is first class all of the way. Here is a quick rundown of what you are in for: “All Tied Up” is extremely catchy and lets the guitar shine. “Fire Tonight” is a beautiful slow song, but has heavy melodic sound (think manly ballad). “Heart Attack” has a sexy southern rock feel to it and doesn’t let up. Grab a fan when it’s over. “Ready For War”, despite the title, is a funky song with a big ending. “Love Slave” has cool drum intro and heavy bass. “Ready For My Love” has a 70s feel to me with emotional vocals and may just be my favorite song in the EP. Besides being a group of talented guys, they love their fans and want them to have the music in hand BEFORE the EP comes out. There are two ways. One, go to www.the71s.com and purchase your tickets for the CD release show at Mainstage on Main (Oct.15). Or two, help The 71's spread their music as far as you can by joining the street team. Join at www.the71s.com and click FREE MUSIC. Members of the Houston based rock band are Keeton Coffman (vocals, guitar), Ryan Cecil (guitar, vocals), Jacob Lisenbe (bass, vocals), and Tank Lisenbe (drums, vocals).
POTBELLY: Good Vibes, Great Music I am almost tempted to just talk about the artwork on one of my Potbelly CD’s. Seriously, it’s the coolest stick figure “gitar” player I have ever seen. And I will cherish it always… But really the picture says so much more. It’s simple, no frills and like “what you see is what you get”. Sum it up in one word and say “Potbelly”. The Houston based Potbelly is three piece alternative rock band who in "…perhaps one of the biggest awards upsets ever…" broke D.R.U.M's hold on Best Reggae/Dub Band in the 2010 Houston Press Music Awards this past August. D.R.U.M. has held onto that record since dirt practically. When Potbelly performed during the Texas Buzz Show at Scout Bar a few weeks ago, I had to go. I wanted to see what they were all about. - Continued on Page 51

GRAPE STOMP: Continued from Previous Page I walked over to the featured artist’s area. John Delafield of Delafield Pottery has been a potter for over 20 years. His wares were simply amazing. He even let those in attendance take a turn on the pottery wheel. Actually, it was Mrs. Delafield who was the first adult to try stomping grapes. She said she was surprised how slippery the grapes were. Soon the afternoon gave way to evening. Southern Reverb was to close the night with some southern rock tunes. Oh, it was nice – the tunes, the Kemah breeze, relaxing in patio furniture that you sink into, a glass of wine and friendly people. I couldn’t remember just how many purple stained feet I had seen today and the smiles and instances of laughter were countless. But I do remember how attentive and knowledgeable the D’Vine Wine staff has been. In fact, they were voted “Best of The Bay – Best Wine Bar” and that wasn’t by accident. D’Vine Wine is definitely a nice place located a few blocks from the Kemah Boardwalk. Check them out.

OCTOBER 2010
A Stomping Good Time At D’Vine Wine By Rhonda Meredith D’Vine Wine held its Second Annual Grape Stomp Weekend at their Kemah location. It was a rough job to cover this event, but someone had to do it. D’Vine Wine is the only boutique winery in Kemah. It’s an Italian inspired building and after walking through the entrance, you have to just stop and let your eyes just “drink in” all of the glorious wine bottles sitting so perfectly on the floor to ceiling racks. Over two dozen different types of wine with names like Royal Decadence (Chocolate Raspberry), Artic Blu (Blueberry Ice), Hog Wild Red Blend and Twilight Black Cherry Pinot Noir.
Fire and Ice jelly was the best. It was made up of red wine and red pepper, mixed with cream cheese and served with Wheat Thins. This dip I could even make. I was told the Blackberry Merlot is good on vanilla ice cream, while the Champagne Celebration is an awesome fresh fruit glaze. All of these are available for purchase at D’Vine Wine.
The wine tasting area is open, but still quite cozy. You can sit at the counter or pick a table. Today though, it was standing room only. D’Vine Wine brought in their vendors so we had Artisan Cheese and Wine Jelly to sample. From this point forward, my views on cheese and jelly have changed. I mean, I will always love you Kraft and Welch’s, but I may have to move on. Please know it’s my fault and nothing you did. Wateroak Farms’ semi soft cheese is handmade using goat milk. For journalistic purposes, I tried one of each type. The Feta and Gouda cheeses tied for first place. I promise to my readers a rematch will take place next year. Outside, Brazos River Provisions Company had an array of jellies for sampling. Hands down their
THE SCENE
Suddenly there was a squeal that broke through the banter. Now the stomp had officially begun as a little girl began mashing the grapes. Mr. and Mrs. Grape were no match for ten little piggies and when it was over, her purple footprints were forever imprinted on a t-shirt. The smiles on the blue cotton candy faces were priceless as more children lined up to step into the barrels. - Continued on Next Page

Sister Christian & More: The Night Ranger/Great White concert was excellent using any measuring stick. If you went to school when I did, it was a trip to hear the all-too-familiar Night Ranger, Great White and Warrant tunes live and in concert. Great White won the head-to-head – and did so with former Warrant lead singer Janie Lane performing in only his second show with the band -- and kicking butt. Both bands were excellent, though, and the crowd responded as such. Possibly most impressive was the ability of Moody Gardens to convert its convention center from host of the International Brewmasters Festival with 3,000 paying guests, tons of displays and tables plus no less than 250 event staff, beer professionals, and promotional models into a live music arena with stadium seating and a huge stage and sound system in less than two hours. During those two hours between beer festival and rock concert, our friends at Island Star Productions hosted a VIP reception in the Moody Gardens Presidential Suite. It was there we met Jose, pictured below in a SCENE Team picture on the far right. Three hours after meeting Jose (last name not known), I caught a glimps of him from the photographer pit as he snuck up on stage in the break between Great White and Night Ranger shows. Much to the horror of the drum tech, Jose performed a drum solo, I’m guessing the first of his career, and was then tackled only to break free and lead security and an extended chase that ended halfway up the stands on one side of the venue. I only mention this because I wanted to run our SCENE Team photo but also explain that Jose was not representing The SCENE. But he did represent. - John Ennis

You know our fondness for Mark May benefit shows, and we wrapped up the month with what was the tops of inspired gatherings. It was a benefit for a beloved departed bandmate, father, and friend of many, Clyde "Butch" Dempsey. On the most beautiful September afternoon, in the company of what the Houston Blues Society described as an "extremely generous" crowd," friends and fans enjoyed hours of massively inspired overthe-top performances from Butch's past local bands -- Luther and the Healers, Cold Feet, the NADZ, and the Mark May Band. Texas Beer Enthusiast Texas Beer News! Texas craft breweries were awarded five medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado last month. Leading the way was Houston's own Saint Arnold Brewing Co., which won gold in the German-style Kolsch category for its top-selling Fancy Lawnmower. Saint Arnold's Elissa India Pale Ale and Oktoberfest seasonal earned silver medals in the extra special bitter or strong bitter and Scottish-style ale categories, respectively. Head brewer Michael Harris was ecstatic coming off the platform with the Lawnmower's gold medal around his neck. "It's great," he said.
First Brewmasters International Beer Festival Brewed Up Plenty of Fun! Dates set for encore event, Labor Day Weekend 2011 When an inaugural event enjoys such a buzz that it sells out and people who traveled from hours away with cash in their hand are turned away, you have a success, right? The first Brewmasters International Beer Festival at Moody Gardens last month (Labor Day weekend) gave beer lovers cause to celebrate. There were some glitches, but Moody Gardens proved to be an excellent venue, and beer lovers got to punch their card for up to 24 samples of beer, many not even available for sale in Texas. And Clifton and Constance McDerby of Food & Vine Productions promise next year’s event will be bigger and better. Can’t wait!
Lawnmower last won gold in 2007. With the three 2010 GABF medals, Saint Arnold’s has won 16 total GABF medals in 16 years of brewing and just missed out on winSaint Arnold’s 2010 GABF Medals ning the brewery of the year award. Blanco's Real Ale Brewing Co., owned by Houston native Brad Farbstein, won its firstever medal, a gold for Rio Blanco Pale Ale (ordinary or special bitter category). Farbstein said he is especially proud of the beer, which doesn't get the attention of top-seller Firemans #4. "We're excited that the first medal was for Rio Blanco," he said. Also, Trumer Brauerei, owned by San Antonio-based Gambrinus and brewed in Berkeley, Calif., won gold in the Germanstyle Pilsener category for its Trumer Pils. Taking a bronze medal in the Munichstyle Helles category was The Covey Restaurant & Brewery in Fort Worth. The 29th GABF dew 3,521 entries from 516 breweries in 48 states. Medals were awarded in 79 categories.
Four new Texas Breweries open for business The craft brewery explosion has reached Texas! Although one of the leading beer consuming states in the Union, Texas has long been behind the East and West coasts in locally brewed beer. But it appears times are achanging as no less than four breweries (Jester King Craft Brewery, Austin; Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling, San Antonio; Thirsty Planet Brewing, Austin and Black Star Co-op Pub & Brewery, Austin) have opened for business since mid-August. And many more, including Galactic Coast Brewing in Galveston County, and No Label Brewing Co. in Katy, are on pace to open by the year’s end. NOTE: Galactic Coast Brewing is scheduled to have a tasting during Doctoberfest on Friday, Oct. 22 at Doc’s Upper Deck. See page 72 for details on Doctoberfest.

COVER STORY
Twin Peaks = Eats, Drinks & Scenic Views By Adam Donaghey Friendly and attractive wait staff, fresh, scratch made food, the coldest beer on the planet and all the sports you can handle – all within a mountain lodge – makes Twin Peaks, Clear Lake's largest “Man Cave.” The wave of large scale sports bars, filled with sexy women in skimpy outfits is growing – and it's hit Webster hard. But when good food, cold beer and great service are the keys to your success, who's to complain? The great thing about Twin Peaks is that it caters to a very mixed crowd. From family gatherings in the afternoons and early evenings because the food is fresh and reasonably priced, to later at night when the single girls come out to play and the sports fanatics cheer on their favorite team.
“man-sized” portions and is competitively priced. I recommend starting off with a bowl of Venison Chili or sharing the Pulled Pork Nachos with friends, before devouring a Smokehouse Burger or a plate of Steak Sliders. If you're feeling a bit more classy, definitely go for the Ribeye Pot Roast or the Flat Iron Steak. For those with a hearty appetite, finish off with the Twin Peaks Sundae – two healthy mounds of Vanilla ice cream on a hot blondie.
Twin Peaks is a high-tech video establishment. There are flat screens all over the place. In fact, many booths actually have their own personal, private TV; and changing the station or adjusting the volume is a snap. Expect every major sports broadcast to be shown from NFL Sunday Ticket, Major League Baseball, Fox Sports Net, and MMA – some of the flat screens even feature the restaurant's own network: Twin Peaks TV, bringing you hi-def Twin Peaks girls on screen. Other amenities include free Wi-Fi and electrical outlets all over the place.
Speaking of hot blondies, I caught up with Carla and asked her what it was like to work in such an intense, high-paced environment with her fellow Twin Peaks girls. “I love it,” Carla beams, “The uniforms are hot; we have good business; and it's like a sorority – we're all like sisters.” The uniforms aren't the only hot items at Twin Peaks either. Guests can choose from a variety of novelty tees and other fun items. I suggest the Twin Peaks Mousepad – great for the wrist! Upcoming events for the month of October include UFC fights on the 16th and 23rd and Halloween Dress-up from the 22nd through the 31st – with a costume contest on the 30th.
Eats and drinks during sporting events are a must, and Twin Peaks delivers with Happy Hour beginning early at 2:00 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m., daily. But wait! There's more. In a smart attempt to corner the party people, Late Night Happy Hour is in service every day from 10 to 11 p.m., except on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when it's extended until 1 a.m. Additionally, shots are always $2.99!
Twin Peaks is located at 20931 Gulf Freeway in Webster. Check out their website at www.twinpeaksrestaurant.com and call in at 281-338-7325. Twin Peaks is open Sunday through Wednesday, 11 a.m. to midnight and Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Twin Peaks is actively hiring, so if you can “rock that uniform” go audition today!
But what really blows my mind is how good the food really is. All prepared in-house, the food tastes fresh, comes in huge
