COVER STORY

CATCHING THE BIG ONE By Sue Mayfield Geiger When Matt Smith retired as Food and Beverage Director from Lakewood Yacht Club last year, the furthest thing from his mind was re-entering the restaurant business. After all, he had spent his entire life putting in countless hours at topnotch eateries in Houston, starting as a dishwasher and working his way up to bus boy before he whipped up his first main course. So, Matt’s plan was to kick back, enjoy his family and spend leisurely time at his favorite pastime – fishing. But long-time friend Tommy Tipton had other plans for Smith. Tipton started talking to Smith about opening a restaurant just a few short months after Smith’s retirement, but Smith kept telling him he was not interested. Yet, Tipton pursued the matter until Smith gave in. “I’m still angry at him,” Smith chuckles.

always available. If you want lamb chops or rib eye for lunch and it’s not on the menu, no problem. They do a lot of night specials as well: Lobster, chateaubriand, crab cakes, fresh catch of the day (Friday and Saturday nights). “I work very closely with Javier who is an excellent chef,” says Smith. Freshness is top priority here and Smith goes to the Farmer’s Market in Houston every morning to buy his produce.

With 23 employees, Smith now oversees his Matt’s Restaurant & Lounge located at 3202 Marina Bay Drive. A 2,800square-foot banquet facility is forthcoming next door and will seat between 120 and 144. Available for weddings, parties and other special events, Smith is excited to offer this venue.

“I’m proud of all our menu items,” says Smith, “but our two biggest sellers are fried chicken (secret family recipe) and my special liver and onions. We also do a lot of great lunch special, and I’m getting ready to start a salad bar with oysters on the half shell.”

Smith calls his atmosphere homey, yet to the average eye, you might want to tack on “with a pinch of elegance” because the interior is stylish with its dark leather sofas, lacquered cherry wood tabletops, high ceilings, and inviting bar. Outdoor dining is also available.

Lunch special are savory and affordable (starting at $7.95) and they include: Red beans and rice with link sausage (Mondays), ham steak with red-eye gravy (Tuesdays), meatloaf (Wednesdays), turkey and homemade dressing (Thursdays), and fried catfish (Fridays). Monday night is the seafood buffet; Tuesday night is the comfort food buffet (pot roast, meatloaf, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables and salad). But you will always find steaks, lamb, fresh seafood and a variety of menu items for all palates. Pies are made from scratch (coconut a house fave), and the dreamy bread pudding is ultra moist with a rich bourbon vanilla sauce.

Smith’s menu is 100 percent his own recipes and any item is

ZONE-ing into the Caribbean BY BETSEY ENNIS Pineapple, chimichurri sauce, havarti cheese, Three Palms Coral Sauce slathered on Angus beef and nestled between a pair homemade toasted potato buns. Do we have your attention yet? The newest kitchen in Kemah is not on the boardwalk, nor does it sport the word “restaurant” on their street sign. Located on Kipp Street in a Kemah Historical Landmark facing Galveston Bay, Zone 504 Sports Bar now has real, kitchen food. Those of you who were early followers of Zone 504 (in the pre-Ike days) will remember the microwaved bar grub. Strike that from your memory banks! This is the new ZONE. Owner and founder Jesse Chapa, along with his newest business partners Kevin and Heaven Padgett, teamed up to bring quality, unique Caribbean-influenced menu items to the patrons of this popular sports bar.

MATT’S RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE: Continued Continued From Page 10 Second to providing a top quality menu, Smith is adamant about service. “I go to every single table every day, and if there is a problem, I correct it right then and there,” he says, adding that he also asks guests for suggestions. After being at Lakewood for eightand-a-half years, Smith’s biggest following is Lakewood patrons. “Out of all the jobs I have ever had in my entire life, Lakewood was the best,” says Smith. “It wasn’t really a job — it was a place I went to have fun — and it was a pleasure to work there.” Growing up in Bay City, Smith (who played clarinet, alto sax and other reed instruments) wanted to be a musician. He performed with greats like Arnett

Cobb, however, that didn’t pay much money, so he ventured into the food business, working at some of Houston’s finest restaurants, including the Confederate House, Elans, and the Sky Terrace at Sakowitz. The father of five and grandfather of 10, Smith says he has no regrets about coming out of his short retirement. “It was good for me,” he says, “however being here sometimes 16 hours a day can get stressful.” When he dines out, he likes to eat at Tommy’s, but also Perry’s (and admits he is addicted to those pork chops).

week (closed on Sunday), Matt’s serves American cuisine which has something for everyone. With little time left for fishing, Smith is running a business that fills him with the same kind of natural high after “catching the big one,” and loyal followers are quite pleased that his retirement was short lived. “There’s nothing else I’d rather do right now,” says Smith, “absolutely nothing.”

Sentinels of Freedom Poker Fun Run Rally BY RHONDA MEREDITH A veteran is someone who at one point in their life wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “Up to and including my life”. Thank you for your support of The Sentinels of Freedom which has proven time and time again that it wasn’t my time to cash that check.”

– Cpl. Donny Daughenbaugh, USMC (retired) Cpl. Donny Daughenbaugh was in Iraq for six weeks before being shot at point blank range in the face outside Baghdad. He was searching a vehicle at a roadblock. The bullet entered his left cheek and Donny (as he said to call him) suffered major nerve damage. The bullet is still lodged in his skull. It’s a miracle he is here today. “Here” is standing in the parking lot of Lance’s Turtle Club for the 2010 Poker Fun Run Rally organized by the Sentinels of Freedom, Bay Area chapter. Donny says he was “in the right place at the right time” when he met Gail Payne, their Executive Director and “This group has been like an angel to me.”

fan, he considers Texas his home - and why not? We work hard. We play hard….even when it comes to a friendly game of charitable poker…

The Sentinels of Freedom Bay Area raises money to assist "a severely injured man or woman serving in the US Armed Forces, recently returning from combat with injuries sustained post 9/11”. They provide an educational scholarship, mentoring program, housing through a partnership with Operation Finally Home and the Bay Area Builders Association, career placement/training, a new vehicle adapted for their special needs, and financial as well as personal mentorship for four years. One scholarship recipient, called a Sentinel, is chosen each year. Donny was chosen for 2010 and is also distinguished as the first Houston area Sentinel. “Texas proves it is God’s country on how it treats its veterans and wounded soldiers,” Donny says with such a peaceful and positive presence. He also speaks highly of military benefits passed by Governor Rick Perry. Donny is a “Veterans Advocate” and directs any veteran needing assistance to check out the Texas Veterans Commission’s website for information. The commission works with government programs as well as non-profit organizations. You can sign up for email updates.

After enjoying breakfast at Lance’s Turtle Club, lunch at Topwater Bar & Grill and making the rounds to various venues and back, it was time for those that participated in the Poker Rally to show their “hands”. Of course there was a tie and a card draw was in order to break it. They both drew a “10” card. Ok, another draw and here are the results as declared by first name only: 1st Place: Scott, 2nd Place: Captain Dan, and 3rd Place: Randy. It had been a great day. One with lighthearted banter and a wonderful breeze compliments of the Gulf. There were so many opportunities to count your blessings while helping your fellow man. As Gail Payne so eloquently says, “We believe with all our hearts that this program is simply the right and honorable thing to do, neither as a Republican nor a Democrat, but as an American. The Sentinel Creed is “We Shall Never Leave You, We Shall Never Forsake You” and it would be a blessing to have your support to help us stand by this creed and do the right thing for these young men and women.” To find out how you can support the Sentinels of Freedom Bay Area, go to www. sentinel.golfreg.com.

CARIBBEAN GRILL – Continued from page 21 For those seeking comfort food to sop up the suds, try their Nearly Famous "Fry Pie" – a bed of French fries covered in shredded pork (or chicken), melted cheddar cheese and drizzled in their homemade BBQ sauce. Their three flavors of hot wings include mango habanero, teriyaki with fresh garlic and jerk wings with fresh pineapple. “Our pizzas are awesome!” Heaven insisted. Samples sited include the B.V.I. Pizza (jerk chicken, green onion, roasted red pepper, mozzarella and jerk sauce) and the Martinique Pizza (Canadian bacon, grilled pineapple, onion, mozzarella and chimichurri sauce). All the sauces are homemade including the ranch, chimichurri, jerk, barbecue, etc. Their semi-sweet potato buns are made locally and brought in fresh regularly. The menu is still in a “trial and see” state. Best sellers will stay. Less popular items will be pulled and replaced. So, don’t wait,

make sure check up the line up and be sure to root for your favorite. “We wanted to offer fun and quirky menu items for customers watching games or who didn't necessarily want a big meal at the boardwalk,” said Heaven. So if you want to take your tastebuds on a Caribbean adventure – no passport required – be sure to pull up a patio chair or a bar stool at Zone 504 (located at 504 Kipp Street in Kemah). Jeanette Williams Foundation Toy Drive For UTMB Hospital in Galveston “I am hopeful to have a toy for every child in the cancer ward at UTMB Galveston.” – Dianne Troop.

Last summer, the Jeanette Williams Foundation restocked the playroom in the children's ward at UTMB Galveston. "They had nothing left after Hurricane Ike," Dianne Troop explained. "It was a great feeling to help those children who have to spend time on the ward. The toys they have there help them to take their minds off what they are going through. This time, we are hoping to give each child on the ward a toy of their very own to keep."

The Jeanette Williams Foundation along with Yachty Gras will be hosting a toy drive on Thursday, November 18 at the model home in the Edgewater Development off NASA Parkway. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with wine and light hors d’oeuvres. "Every child should have at least one new toy for Christmas, and I am hoping we can provide that with this toy drive," Diane Troop said. "During these tough economic times, parents with sick children have an additional burden that is both emotional and financial. If we can bring a smile to their child's face, it might help lighten that load."

The Jeanette Williams Foundation for Children’s Cancer Research sends children from the cancer unit at UTMB to summer camp each year. This past summer, JWF sent 30 children to a camp put on by the Rainbow Connection near Brenham. For more information, contact Dianne Troop at 281-703-7370 or email jwfoundation@yahoo.com.

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty.

Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venues offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

Holiday Season Guide MOODY GARDENS SHEDS LIGHT ON HOLIDAYS 9th Festival of Lights to include new features & special deals This holiday season kids won’t need unusually frigid weather to enjoy the rare chance to play in Texas snow. That is, not if they come to Moody Gardens’ ninth annual Festival of Lights. This year’s festival – to be held Nov. 13 to Jan. 1 in Galveston – will feature a new Snow Zone play area for kids, which will be offered on Friday nights throughout the holiday lighting event. Admission to the Snow Zone is just $5 with the purchase of a Festival of Lights ticket and allows kids to play in the snow for as long as they’d like. Also new to the festival will be Moody Gardens’ “Food Drive Fridays,” where guests can bring a non-perishable food item on any Friday and receive 2-for-1 admission to

the festival. The food drive program will benefit Galveston and Houston food banks. “Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens has become a family tradition for many of our guests that come out every year to celebrate the holiday season with us,” said John Zendt, president of Moody Gardens. “We’re glad to give them something new and exciting to enjoy this year while also allowing them to contribute to a worthy cause.” Festival of Lights is the Gulf Coast’s largest holiday lighting event, receiving more than 85,000 visitors annually. It includes a mile-long trail of more than a million lights and 100 sound-enhanced animated displays sparkling over the beautiful Galveston Bay. Every year, Santa Claus starts the festival magic by parachuting in to Moody Gardens to flip a switch that transforms the 242-acre property into a glistening wonderland. This year’s opening day celebration will begin at 4 p.m. Nov. 13 and

will include performances by local groups, including the Galveston Ballet, the Sugar Land First United Methodist Church Choir, and Leah White & The Magic Mirrors. While guests are being entertained, they can also explore a variety of Festival of Lights activities, from ice skating to watching Santa feed penguins in the Moody Gardens aquarium. Photos with Santa will be available nightly throughout the festival, which will be open Thursdays – Saturdays Nov. 13 to Dec. 11, excluding Nov. 18. The festival will also be open Dec. 12. Festival of Lights will be open daily from Dec. 16 to Jan. 1.

On the Water “PASSION” FROM CORPUS CHRISTI CLAIMS BACARDI CUP “Passion,” a Santa Cruz 50 from Corpus Christi, claimed this year’s coveted Bacardi Cup in Lakewood Yacht Club’s 24th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta. The race started off the Flagship Hotel pier in Galveston on Thurs., Oct. 21, and progressed 150 miles across the Gulf of Mexico to Port Aransas. Owner of “Passion” Steve Hastings, a 15 year Harvest Moon Regatta veteran, related that he has won the Bill Hall Memorial Trophy seven times for the first monohull to finish the race, but this is his first time to capture the Bacardi Cup. Harvest Moon Regatta Chairwoman Andrea Todaro reported that 216 boats started the race, but due to heavy seas and winds of 15 to 25 miles an hour, 49 boats were forced to drop out of the race, leaving 167 to finish. “This was definitely one of the roughest weather wise, and the darker it got, the nastier it was,” stated Hastings. Asked what factors contributed to his win, he said that the crew pushed hard and stayed on the rail all night long. “Nefte Gaz”, a J-145 owned by Lakewood racer Bill Kelleher, pushed them hard from behind throughout the night, so that it became a “boat for boat race.” Being one of the first to cross the finish line gave “Passion” the happy advantage of getting off the water sooner than most of the racing boats, added Hastings. The crew of “Passion” included Mark Foster, Terry Flynn, Brant

Other Lakewood racers such as Jim Winton, Ed Brauer, John Barnett, and Jack Seitzinger revealed that it was the roughest Harvest Moon Regatta they have experienced. As new Lakewood racer Sam Crowder said, “It was quite a sporting event!” Additional perpetual trophy winners were Jim Van Fleet’s “Abandoned Assets,” Mayor’s Cup for the first multihull to finish; Chuck Wielchowsky’s “Texas Ranger,” Commodore’s Cup for overall cruising spinnaker; Lakewood’s Fleet Captain Carl Drechsel on “Patriot,” the Cameron Cannon for overall cruising non-spinnaker; Steve Hastings on “Passion,” Bill Hall Memorial Trophy for first monohull to finish; and Paul Horton’s “Tribology,” the Founder’s Trophy for the overall multihull which was a new perpetual trophy. Todaro presented each of the sponsors with a framed Harvest Moon Regatta poster which was designed by Lakewood’s Michael Denman, son of Past Commodore Harvey and Jill Denman. Representatives on hand to receive the appreciation posters were the founding sponsor Bacardi USA, Nautic Yacht Sales, West Marine, Banks Sails, Sea Lake Yacht Sales, the City of Port Aransas, and Houston Magazine.

HOTTEST TRENDS OF 2011

SCEN

Yes, we said 2011. We promise to let you actually have a season before we move on to the next one, but how fun is it to continue to move forward and get excited about things on the forefront. Houstonians don’t have too much of a winter, but we can learn early and pretend really well in January and February. If the trend continues for longer winters, we may actually have to shop around for a little fur!

★ onesies ★ petticoats ★ diaper bags ★ t-shirts ★ head bands ★ backpacks & much more! ★ bibs

Fur is the hottest trend on the runway this season whether it be mink, beaver or pure faux – we are seeing it on everything from shirts, handbags, boots and hats. Some of the furriest this season include Fendi, Versace, Valentino and Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld made the biggest statement not only in fur, but in showmanship when he had a 240 ton chunk of ice carved into a wintery runway. The collection of faux furs were in luxurious whites, light blues and blacks that utterly romanticized the Arctic Circle. It makes us want to plan a ski trip right away.

Calvin Klein, Celine and Donna Karan continued their minimalist virtues but kept the looks streamlined and tailored with a hint of ’80s shoulder pads and flash. Neutrals remain a fall staple but the “new” neutrals consist of camel, buttery rust and refined grays. The fun part is now mixing camel and grey and throwing in plaid, a la Dior, Balenciaga and Stella McCartney’s collections. Cropped pants are still on the radar, as well as long skirts, now with flowing see-through fabrics. Cat eye sunglasses are creeping back in fashion, and animal prints remain a stay for winter. Cavalli stuns in anything fur, animal print and Daniel Boone chic. We love Versace’s collection of ultra-modern pants and dresses with thigh-high splits. Tights, leggings and hose were still fierce, which is great for us because there is something to be said for comfort. The pops of color we did see on the trounce in heels and handbags included cherry reds, citrine and indigo. Red was the star this season in tribute to the vampire craze. We saw red leather and velvet intertwined with blacks of all fabrics for a sensual goth tone. - Continued on Page 48

Veterans Day Celebration to provide fun and inspiration Inspiring presentations, tributes, a presentation of colors and military displays will honor all veterans from every branch of service at UH-Clear Lake’s Veteran’s Day Celebration, Nov. 11 at 10 a.m., in the university’s Liberty Park, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX 77058.

“We will celebrate our veterans for their service to our country and, especially during these times, we want to recognize our current military members,” said Cheryl Rohde, executive secretary of university advancement and event coordinator. The university has hosted the community event since 2003, says Rohde, who took over as coordinator in 2006. Scheduled highlights for this year’s celebration include the National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by fourthgrade students from Pasadena ISD’s Teague Elementary. Retired Lt. Col. Larry Thomas, who served 22 years in the Texas Air National Guard at Ellington Field, as well as a Southwest Airlines pilot and is a U.S. Air Force veteran, will be this year’s keynote speaker. A special proclamation will be issued celebrating the U.S. Air Force and a presentation of colors provided by the Clear Lake High School Jr. ROTC. Emmy-nominated Juan Manuel, a composer, guitarist, singer and UH-Clear Lake alumnus, composed a song he will perform as a tribute to veterans. Sponsors of the celebration include Norman Frede Chevrolet, who will provide the truck for the “Fill the Truck” project. All guests are asked to bring their old and used cell phones for troops currently serving to “Fill the Truck” so those serving in the military can call home. ARI construction will provide hot dogs and volunteers. Vintage military vehicles and equipment will be on display, provided by Bluebonnet Military Motor Pool of Texas. Also on display will be a helicopter from the Army National Guard. All guests will receive an honorary United States flag lapel pin and complimentary refreshments. Commemorative lapel pins will be given to all U.S. military veterans in attendance. The event, which is free and open to the public, will move to the Bayou Building’s Atrium II in the event of inclement weather. For more information about this event, contact Cheryl Rohde, 281-283-2024, or e-mail RohdeC@uhcl.edu.

Hottest Trends of 2011 • Cont. from page 46: Pucci, Versace, Alexander Wang and Altuzarra were the stand-outs in the black widow, blood sucking categories. Joseph Altuzarra is the hot designer of the moment for us. Born a Parisian, he drifted to NYC to make his name. Being coined “the boy wonder” is a result of several years of hard work at Givenchy learning the techniques he says now have freed him and taken him to a new level. He is studied and sophisticated and ruled the runways with his “vampire chic” collections as if Karl Lagerfeld had a tumultuous affair with Victoria, the vixen from Twilight. Marchesa is increasingly becoming our favorite designer of ever! Georgina Chapman’s designs defy words, her statuesque dresses are adorned with ruffles, are endlessly feminine and romantic and sport exquisite draping. The materials are the gamut from tulle, silk, embroidery and feathers. The “it” clothes for young starlets and jetsetters, and the “it” clothes filling our dream closet!

It’s Time To Meet Good Job Underground By Rhonda Meredith If you love the sound of flawless guitar riffs and double drum pedals, you will absolutely adore Good Job Underground. Robb Marshall (guitar) and Bryan Holub (drums) have performed all over Houston and The SCENE Magazine caught up with the dynamic duo at Scout Bar last month. The crowd was a little confused at first. I heard one guy ask “Where is the singer?” I looked over at him and said “They don’t need one.” (More on THAT guy later…)

tention as the music flows. The sound is like Satriani meets Portnoy. (Look the names up if you don’t know!) It’s metal, then ambient, then alternative rock. Really no genre is needed when the music is this good.

Marshall and Holub are very unassuming people. You know – kind of quiet, cute, sheepish grins and very friendly offstage. But when they walk onstage, Marshall picks up his guitar and Holub gets situated behind his drum kit and magic happens. The lights change and the men onstage command your at-

Watching Marshall and Holub feed off each other’s energy is like being privy to a personal jam session and the crowd loved it! Even the buzzkill guy who scoffed there was no singer, jumped up onstage without an invitation and praised the band…and the working man…and beer. Then, he entertained the crowd with a little happy dance after it was firmly suggested he leave the stage. Oh, but who could blame him? Good Job Underground’s songs have catchy titles that make us all giddy: “Sparky The Troll,” “Zangief Wields An Axe,” “Part of This Complete Breakfast,” “Bloodhousin,’” and their latest song “Podophilia” (Again, look it up if you don’t know! We aim to educate.) Aside from his mad drumming abilities, Holub is also quite an artist and has drawings of Sparky the Troll and Zangeif posted on GJU’s Myspace page. On Facebook? So is Good Job Underground. So go check them out!

MY DARKEST DAYS Headlines Houston Show By Rhonda Meredith The last time I saw Canada’s own alternative rock band My Darkest Days (MDD) in Houston, they were traveling around in a white tour van with no air conditioning (during the height of summer) and passing the time with shooting each other with spitballs. But, times have changed...for the better. Now, MDD travels in a tour bus that has air conditioning and passes the time shooting each other with air guns. I had to ask how bad it hurts to be shot with one. (BUT, I didn’t want to know firsthand!) Is the pain comparable to like getting a tattoo? So Doug was going to shoot Reid for journalistic purposes, but Reid took the gun and shot his own thigh at point blank range!! The “Jackass” moment didn’t produce any tears, so I am guessing that Reid has gotten used to being shot...at point blank range…in the thigh. I then looked over at Sal and told him the video of his naked butt being shot with an air gun went viral on Facebook. Everyone has seen it! He had a big smile, but then frowned as he said his mom wasn’t too happy about that….Uh-oh.

sponse… Sal said everything was so slow before the single for “Pornstar Dancing” was released and since then, life has been on fast forward. But all of the guys said this is what they live for and when they are on the road, they miss home and when home, they miss the road… Each echoed that they were thankful to be living out their dream.

Before I go further, let me introduce the band… Matt Walst (vocals, guitar), Doug Oliver (drums), Sal Coz Costa (guitar, mohawk), Brendan Mc Millon (bass), and Reid Henry (keyboard, guitar). Their music is “high energy rock and roll”, but the ballads are crowdpleasers as well. MDD says “half of our song lyrics are about partying and having a good time while the other half deal with relationships and life”. So here we are on the tour bus talking and the vibe is happy. The guys are all smiling and proud to show off their “Home Sweet Home”. The bus was clean and smelled good. Really! MDD had Mexican food delivered that smelled so yummy. I asked if they ever cooked on the bus. I got a few shrugs and grins. Almost apologetically Reid says “We only have a microwave.” Doug and Brendan say they would like to try to cook on the bus one day. So what would you cook? This is when I found out Doug makes a really good Shepherd’s Pie, Brendan can make great chicken dishes and Reid is the master of macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, hot dogs, and reheating McDonald’s burgers. I had been pretty comfy sitting in a chair across from the front two bunks and never went into the back of the bus, but the guys said the rest of the bunks were back there and the bathroom. It was nice to have a shower on the bus, but Brendan said by the time it gets hot, the fresh water runs out. On July 21st, MDD had opened for Sick Puppies in Houston and were back at the same venue on October 22nd to headline. This was one of approximately half a dozen headlining club performances MDD was doing. I wondered what – in one word – it had been like these months on tour. These were the first three responses (1) amazing, (2) fun and (3) dirty. Here is the fourth re-

THE SCENE

When MDD isn’t shooting each other with their air guns, they are relaxing or pulling the guitars out and getting ideas for new material. The Scene Magazine reviewed MDD’s debut album (it rocks) and we predicted that “The World Belongs To Me” would be in a movie. Well, you might have read on MDD’s Facebook page, this song is on the latest SAW movie’s soundtrack CD. Sal wanted the MDD family to know that the members of the band do look at their Facebook pages and are aware of the comments. He asked for the fans to please keep checking MDD’s website for their tour dates. Sal also said thank you to the MDD supporters on behalf of the band. It was awesome hanging out with MDD for a while on their bus. They are so genuinely happy to be on tour. I will leave you with this… Joey (the sound guy) isn’t allowed to drive the bus for a while since there was a mishap in Louisiana. But guys, the cardboard looks lovely and I bet right now, at this very moment…you wouldn’t change a thing. My Darkest Days nailed their performance at Scout Bar Houston. People were taking the MDD posters off the walls and standing in line well after the show was over to meet the guys and get photos. They will be back in Houston on 11/30/10 at Warehouse Live with Hinder, Saving Abel and Default.

Who Is BC? Continued from Page 68 “Why Don’t U Call Me” is completely different with heavy group choruses and snapping fingers. The songs stops and picks up again. This may be the theme song for a campy stalker comedy. If that ever happens, remember I told you so. There are two acoustic songs included on the CD. The first is “Brown Chicken Brown Cow” (live). It is based on a joke and has been one of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it. It is not for minors. Haha! The second is “Magical” which the full version is the opening song. This version was included because of a fan request and it was recorded in BC’s home sweet home. BC really shines on his acoustic songs. This is a known fact if you have ever seen him perform live. He commands attention when he walks onstage with just a guitar in hand. The final song is “I’m Shaving My Beard Today” (Youtube). What to say? It’s tongue in cheek. Well, maybe not! You HAVE to watch the video on YouTube. No ifs, ands or buts. The song is good, but the visual is great. Even though BC now lives in Dallas, he is in Houston all the time. There are gas receipts to prove it. The main reason he moved to Dallas was for his producer. Williamson is the Yoda in guiding BC when he takes his music in different directions. He tends to do that a lot. There is an insider comment that BC is “always changing his style and sound - it’s perhaps the only stable characteristic that this man employs”.

SEEN BY THE SCENE

Check out BC’s website (www.whoisbc.com) for free music, links to purchase his new CD and his social sites, show dates and mailing list sign up. The free music on the site has been

previously released and BC wants you to know where he has come from musically. The new CD is very fresh and sounds as only BC sounds. They say there is a fine line between genius and insanity. Not that I am calling BC insane or anything… But he does say in HIS words, “Everything I write will always be different. I never want to write the same song twice, or even be in the same genre. With the Crisis I'm alternative rock, with CB Kings I'm suburban hip-hop, and myself.... well, I'm just trying to come from another angle. I wouldn't be honest if I said I didn't want to sell records, so you can call me pop. When I listen to BC (the new CD), I'm happy because it stretches across so many new styles for me - dance, piano/lounge, acoustic. So Much Better is the only song similar to the Crisis and it's still very different from anything we did. The stigma is for a band or artist to pigeon hole themselves into a genre or niche and "find your market". But that's not my goal. I want to make sure that when you hear my music, you get something unexpected. My market is everyone and no one, but at least me (and my producer).” As far as the question “Who is BC?”… I think if you just listen to the music, you will find out…

Buck’s Bar: “Good Times – Good People” ON ASSIGNMENT DURING THE TRUE BLOOD PARTY cated in the historic Galveston Strand. The Buck brothers opened a second venue called Buck’s West in 2003. Buck’s West is still successfully operating on the west end of Galveston near Jamaica Beach. In 2005, Hurricane Rita destroyed the original Buck’s Bar and in 2007, as a Phoenix rises from the ashes, Buck’s Bar was relocated to its present location in Webster.

By Rhonda Meredith

I had to smile when walking up the stairs to Buck’s Bar. They decorate the venue for each holiday and Halloween is no exception. I was scared someone would jump out at me as I walked through the spooky entrance, but thankfully no one did. Instead, I was welcomed professionally by the doorman who was wearing vampire fangs. But that’s ok; after all, this was the night of the True Blood party. It felt good to have an icy blast of air conditioning greet me as I stepped inside. Then a choice had to be made – turn left or right? I momentarily looked at Buck’s trophy case, then picked neither direction and walked straight into the Ladies’ room. “TMI,” you say? No, more for journalistic purposes! It was clean and brightly lit. So now you know! Anyhow, I walked out and went toward the music that didn’t sound like your typical disco music. This music was more like rock you could dance to – it had more of an edge. Surrounding the huge dance floor were TVs broadcasting music videos, leather couches better than mine at home and candles that were flickering to the music. The atmosphere was classy, but relaxed as friendly conversation floated between the two full service bars that are located on different levels. Now on the other side of Buck’s Bar, the vibe was different. It was relatively early, but all of the tables were taken and the crowd was intent on watching the UFC 121 fight that was being shown live on numerous TV’s. Two of the TV’s were supersized from the floor to the ceiling. It was standing at this area’s main bar that I met Joey Buck. Buck’s Bar has family owned and operated since 2002. Joey and his brother Timothy were successful DJ’s which made the transition of becoming club owners a natural progression. They secured $17,000 from a second mortgage on their home and the original Buck’s Bar was born and lo-

THE SCENE

“They say ‘It ain’t open unless Buck’s here’,” Mr. Buck smiles, “I am hands on owner, but in a good way.” I can tell there is a sense of pride as he walks around greeting customers by name and shaking hands. In fact, Mr. Buck has been known to become a designated driver in a moment’s notice. Buck’s Bar focuses on exceeding their customer’s expectations whether it’s a first timer or corporate customer. On Buck’s Bar’s website, I can make my reservations online and even pick my table and what bottle I’d like. For corporate events, Buck’s Bar will provide everything (security, staff, clean up alcohol, etc.) and can direct me to a local restaurant for catering. I enjoyed meeting Mr. Buck (even with fangs and dark contacts). He is an Army veteran and both of his brothers are in law enforcement. His bar has excellent ventilation and even though smoking is allowed, when I left, my hair didn’t smell like smoke. Another tidbit for the ladies! Information to know about Buck’s Bar - there is no cover for ladies until 11pm and no cover for the first 50 people. Otherwise, the cover is typically $5. Buck’s Bar is open Thursday through Saturday with the only Wednesday being the night before Thanksgiving. They reward their early customers with major drink specials until 11pm. Earlier this year, three of their bartenders competed in the Iron Bartender contest at the San Luis Hotel. Two placed in the top ten and once placed 4th overall. The signature drink is called a “Buck Shot”. It’s a chilled shot of Crown Royal, Red Bull and peach Schnapps. Order one when you go! Loose Notes: Continued From Page 62 SEA LEVEL & ABOVE: Kelly McGuire was spotted all over the SCENE this month. We caught him ever serenading his "keeping life in perspective" message to the folks at Cowboys & Cowgirls Who Cook as well as the high fliers at Ballunar Festival. One mention we've failed to cover the years on the beat has been our beloved National Anthem. This year, we checked off those boxes twice at the Ballunar Festival with Suze Benson and SUMC Music Director, John Cole delivering their balloon glow, crowd cheering renditions.

THE MORE, THE MERRIER: Check out the lineup changes at the area Open Mics. The beat kicks off at Katie’s on Sunday/Monday, Jackie’s BrickSlide Effect @ Jackie’s Brickhouse house on Wednesday, and the Cockeyed Seagull on Thursday (Hosted by the Amigos, Cisco, Raggio, Wood & Wind, & Myrna Sanders). The playlists are never the same, and you'll catch the best of jams, new material roll outs, and stage debuts. GOOD MOJO: Some things you can always count on, and Madigan is a show you can never go wrong with. We got our dose at Dempsey's this month with their ever-presto gusto presence and best travelling sound and lighting crews in the area. Madigan always delivers for their fun fans everywhere. Come be one!

WHISPERS: Janet Z had the Club Classic at capacity during her CD Release Party. Titled "Whispers", it's always a celebration when our local artists put it all together. Get your copy for the holidays! Speaking of new CDs, local favorites Magazine and Slide Effect have been putting time in the studios also. Keep your ears to the ground, they should be good. NEW GUARD A-COMING: Tis always a treat seeing the new young acts debut. And this month, we caught Fabulously Inadequate. We met them warming up in the parking lot and got to chat before their debut at the Scout Bar's 94.5 FM Buzznite (after a day at BuzzFest, so our frame of reference was quite clear). Ever respectful of what they've yet to accomplish (Inadequate?!?!?) they fired up and nailed it on all 32 cylinders with a crisp powerful precision rock earning an audience and staff consensus of "Awesome." Listening through their set, it's clear they've no qualms appreciating the music from before and have the vigor to play for today. The music plays on... Cheers!

Loose Notes by Andy Eng New Politics at BuzzFest 25

Seems like the world's gone wacky? Then it's time to check out something new & take it in, which is what many are doing this days... At Cynthia's Pavilion, we blended with the 16-minute sell-out crowd and 14 bands for BuzzFest 25. Twas great energy on the side stage and massive sound on the main. A.D. Rowntree (host of Sunday night Buzznight at the Scout Bar) introduced us to New Politics. If you missed them, it might be awhile before you see them live again as they're from Denmark. Fun and energetic, this group instantly plopped onto our favorite "watch for" list. Over on the main stage, Papa Roach easily would have stolen the show had not BUSH make a "never thought we'd see them again" appearance. Sick Puppies had tidal waves of body surfers surfing as they headlined the side stage and Godsmack wrapped up the mainstage louder than Grand Funk Railroad in 1974 – We were at both shows, we can say... :-) LOTTA LUV: Mark Fenton and the gang at the Cockeyed Seagull rallied up one of the bestest local benefits for Tony Ornelas. A Who's Who of local musicians came out to play (Wood & Wind, Hourglass, Edge of Texas, Greg Wappler, Cisco & Raggio). Kudos to JoAnn Flawlessly Inadequate @ Scout Bar Stone for stalwart drumming duties, the staff of volunteers, outstanding food from CRS cookers, the entire Seagull staff, and cheers to the more-than-200 in attendance with one of the highest dollar-per-attendee ratio we've seen in awhile. - Continued on Page 61

COVER STORY

Dempsey's Irish Pub packs a punch! By Adam Donaghey Dempsey's, Clear Lake's premiere, locally owned and operated neighborhood Irish Pub, offering a variety of drink special, a relaxed environment and live music four nights a week – it's also a killer place to check out world championship boxing. Named for half-Irish owner John Delesandri's son and prize-fighter Jack Dempsey, the friendly, laid-back sports bar has become a central location for boxing and UFC. John, along with partner Troy Albright, wanted to create a neighborhood establishment on the west side of Interstate 45 in League City that would offer a variety of sports, diverse live music and beer-soaking pub grub with an Irish twist. Dempsey's is equipped with 13 flat screens, showcasing boxing, UFC fights, and all the football you can handle with NFL Ticket and College Game Day Ticket. Coming up Saturday, November 13 is the Pacquiao vs Margarito fight – come out early during the chili cookoff and stay late for Vegas Night with poker, two black jack tables and the Red Room pole dancers. New for November, Monday Night Football just got a little more fulfilling with $5 BBQ Plates consisting of Dempsey's special smoked chicken, venison sausage, ranch style beans and potato salad – not to mention the Monday Night drink specials!

throw some darts, or play a round of Golden Tee on an 8-foot by 6-foot HD screen! There's also a punching machine for those who wish to expend some energy.

Happy hour at Dempsey's is Monday through Thursday, 2 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., where everything is a dollar off. Throughout the week, the specials roll on all evening, including Mondays with $1.50 domestic drafts, 50 cent wings, and $2 wells; Tuesday is $2 Big Ass Beer Night with live music from Jeremy Bradshaw and poker tables; Karaoke Wednesdays offer 75 cent drafts and $2 wells; Thursday is Hooters and Twin Peaks girls appreciation night; and Sundays feature live music from Obsolete August and dollar drafts. Check in the calendar here in the SCENE for upcoming live music on Fridays and Saturdays at Dempsey's.

With all these activities, you're certain to work up an appetite. Dempsey's offers six custom burgers, several chicken sandwiches, and they're known for their Philly Cheese Steak. Feeling really brave? Attempt the 5-pound TKO Burger Challenge and get your meal and a t-shirt for free if you eat the whole burger in 90 minutes. It has been done! Those who are just plain crazy, should try the wings with Dempsey's Devil Sauce – hold the record for eating the most wings, and you'll get a t-shirt. Brand new to Dempsey's is the front yard: a fenced-in, grassy area with picnic tables, a full bar and TVs. Smoking is allowed outside. Perfect for parties and events, Dempsey's is partnered with Gianna's Catering, offering full service with wait staff or buffet style catering and a full service bar, guaranteed to beat any price. For use at Dempsey's or at your private residence, the service also books bands, creates ice sculptures and designs custom cakes.

Try the Jameson Irish Whiskey based Mad Irishman, Dempsey's house shot; or get your Texas Irish on with the Texas Car Bomb – half Shiner and half Southern Comfort, topped with Bailey's. Beer drinkers enjoy 10 draft beer selections and more than sixty bottled beers – including a decent selection of Texas craft beer!

Dempsey's is located between Bay Area Blvd. and I-45 off of 518 at 3612 West Main Street in League City. Operating hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Sundays. Call 281557-0000 to reserve your party or inquire about using Gianna's Catering.

Between sporting events, shoot a round of pool,

BC CARRION - Who Is BC? By Rhonda Meredith

“I want to create music that inspires, provokes, heals, and innovates.” - Brian “BC” Carrion

The hardest part when writing an article is the beginning. Especially when there are so many cool things to tell you about Houston native Brian Carrion (“BC”)… So let me start with the basics.

Johnny Falstaff Saturday, Nov. 13

BC is the founder of The Crisis Music Group. For almost six years now, he has been the “manager, the booking agent, CFO, musical director, guitarist, and front man” for the Crisis. The Crisis is well known in these parts and woven tightly into the rock music scene.

HUGH & JEFF’S CAR WASH

But the rock scene can’t contain BC. So, for about 18 months now, BC has been the producer, co-writer (“material for mature audiences”)and one half of the “suburban hip-hop duo with Houston rapper DeeWilla” in a collaboration called CB Kings. Their first EP was released in December, 2009. But the hip-hop scene doesn’t wholly define BC either… So who is BC? Well, he grew up in Friendswood, graduated Clear Brook High School, studied Computer Engineering at Texas A&M and decided to stop pursuing that avenue be-

cause “life goals change”. BC has been playing the guitar for the lucky number 13 years. He says, “I played so much guitar that the nickel in the strings turned my fingers silver.” But the piano is what BC is passionate about learning now and he has been playing the keys for about two years. BC just “officially unofficially” released a self-titled independent CD on October 14th with the support of producer/cowriter Steven Williamson, drummer Charlie Carlisle, drummer Jordan Pipka, percussionist Luis Rodriguez, and last, but not least, girlfriend Kayla Porterfield. Porterfield also has a significant role in “I’m Shaving My Beard Today”.

Wednesday, Nov. 17 SCOUT BAR

The CD contains six songs. “Magical” is dance, pop song that’s an ode to love or a lover. “So Much Better” starts out whimsical then gets heavy and edgy. It’s about the realization of being better off after a break up. The song goes through the emotions with you! A music video will be made in November with Chase Rees and ThinkBIG productions. - Continued on Page 53
