The Hectic: Get The Beat In Your Head Look up “Texas Industrial Alt-Metal” in the dictionary and you will find two words – THE HECTIC. By Rhonda Meredith Don’t know what “The Hectic” is? Well, here is the official meaning: “The Hectic is often characterized as a group of revolutionary artists who actively seek to perform their music or art in such a manner as to not conform to any standard practices, required formats, or so called "popular beliefs," while selfishly fulfilling their own inherent needs and desires.” In 2003, the faint wind of the torrential musical storm began to blow. Ronnie Tinsley and Ken Pride started to “build” The Hectic. There were the normal struggles to overcome first, of course – like finding a singer. After numerous failed vocalist auditions, Tinsley moved from “THE” guitar player to front man. It is in this role he is able to continue playing the guitar and showoff his mad microphone skills. Pride has always been the drummer extraordinaire role while Chris Owen and Kevin Reed (both rule at unrelenting guitar riffs), Danny Acker (the rumble on bass), DJ Hardcore (turntable action and instigator in the pit), and Marilyn Tovy (cello) were added to the final line-up. In 2008, The Hectic began performing locally and working on a debut full-length selftitled studio effort. The independent CD was released in January 2010 to excellent reviews. The CD is broad in its metal appeal. Its songs range from full-on metal assault anthems to a more melodic metal ballad. “24/7” has a bit of a Texas twang to it. My little boy even sings “Got A Beat In Your Head.” You can understand the words Tinsley sings, so it’s easy to sing along. Owen lends his low throttled

voice to “Away From Light.” Regularly, the music gets characterized as “Nine Inch Nails meets Pantera,” but I think it’s better than that. Yes. I said it. Let’s talk about something that is equally as important as the music – The Hectic’s LIVE show. “A ‘CD’ is very one dimensional and doesn't really show anyone totally what you are all about,” Tinsley says. “We all believe the live music performance is equal parts music and visual.”

NAUGHTY & NICE: Santa was out visiting all you big girls and boys on the SCENE at Jackie's Brickhouse, Zone 504, Scout Bar, and at Dickens. Can you say "Be Merry!!!?" Well you did... :-) TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE: We stopped in to catch In This Moment from California. An unfortunate tragedy had struck lead singer Maria Brink earlier that day. Nonetheless, she and the band gave holiday moshers (biggest bunch I've seen) a total workout. The opening act, Taking Dawn from Las Vegas scored a hat trick raising the bar on the energy, enthusiasm, and all round having fun meters. Nothing finer than seeing people enjoying what they're doing...

These guys sorta just appeared out of nowhere and earned a nomination for I.D.R. @ Cockeyed Seagull Texas Buzz New Band of the year. Get the gist? Our buddies at Zone 504 woke up the Kemah Lighthouse District bringing in power metal industrial rock bands Abide & V Drive. CALLED TO THE FRONT OFFICE: By the time all of you read this, you will have heard our local guitar hero, Mean Gene Kelton, got his call back home. Before heading back, I had the privilege of meeting his acquaintance personally a grand total of four times. Please allow... First was at a planning meeting at Katie's. The Galveston Bay Area Musicians Association was gearing up to help professional musicians who lost their livelihood following Hurricane Ike. Out of his gigging garb and totally unassuming, this fellow and his wife, Joni, were simply all about getting others back on their feet. I left that meeting scratching my head about the two of them. The second encounter was at the IkeFest show at the Big Texas Saloon. By now, it clicked that Mean Gene was a hot guitar player, but on that day, he dialed the presence knob back a few clicks and instead shared the stage and spotlight with his two sons -- clearly a proud father. The only favor he ever asked was on that day for a family picture of the boys for "Momma." Our third encounter was at the Jim Shortt Memorial (Cockeyed Seagull). By now, I had no doubt the Keltons were a presence with their Fourth of July show, New Year’s Eve finished by 5 p.m. parties, movie and book pursuits. Gene didn't play that day. Rather, he and Joni spent the entire time mingling with the packed house of musicians and fans celebrating the late Jim Shortt. They were about the camaraderie and respect. The fourth and final time we crossed paths was when Mean Gene appeared with Foghat at the 18th Street Pier. Holy cow! Could this guy play!!!! I consider myself fortunate to have gotten to hear him play unleashed at least once yet value the three earlier encounters more. I’m just saying, and assume others feel similarly... Hey, heads up! David Schwope (et.al.) are lining up what should be an incredible memorial celebration at Jackie's Brickhouse for Gene. To be continued...

In London, there is a clock tower named “Big Ben” and it’s famous for its reliability. In Webster, there is a new place to go hang out and its name is “Big Ben Tavern.” Big Ben Tavern is going to become famous for its atmosphere, customer service and British comfort food. Yes, I did say “British” comfort food. Think Shepherd’s pie, fish and chips and Scotch eggs. Are you hungry yet? I thought so. Big Ben Tavern also has the other food groups like burgers and pizza, too. Another cool thing about the kitchen is that it’s open late for the industry folk. You will need something to wash the comfort food down obviously, so Big Ben Tavern offers 20 beers on tap. The imported selection is large and unique. Of course, wine and spirits are available as well. There are happy hour specials on every day that ends with a “y” from 4 to 7 p.m. Even though the tavern just opened at the end of December, it’s quickly becoming “the” neighborhood pub. There is never a cover charge and the atmosphere is overall casual. Crossing through the entry are families, the “loose tie after work” crowd, those with business lunches and date dinners. People like you and me, really.
Check out the jukebox while you are there. Live music will be planned in conjunction with special events and a DJ is forthcoming. Forever Falls: The Next Generation of American Arena Rock By Rhonda Meredith They say all they need is the arena, and I say give it to them! The term “hardworking” only begins to describe Forever Falls. Just in the past three months alone the band has shared the stage with Sick Puppies, The Hunger, Powerman 5000, Saving Abel, Sevendust and The Black Crowes. They are constantly touring the regional Gulf Coast area, headlining in Houston and expanding their fan base. The Texas Buzz crowd took notice when Forever Falls took to the stage at Scout Bar. The lights dimmed and the videos that adorned each side of the stage came alive. The show had a lot of energy and the crowd was into it! Almost five years ago, their fates descended into Beaumont to work their magic and Forever Falls was formed. The band released their debut CD a mere six months after. Then another and another which brings us to the present. Forever Falls has just released their fourth effort “Big Vision For A Small World.” The CD boasts 11 tracks. Six of those songs are new while the rest are from their previous CD. The only cover is “Send Me An Angel.” Think back to the band Real Life and 1983. If you were born in 1981, then you are excused from that little exercise. “Younger” is 100% anthem. It’s for those who have left their school “daze” behind and perfect for high school reunions. school, then good – it’s cool to stay in school. “City of Angels” is a personal favorite. “God Bless Rock N Roll” is a party song, I am telling you. The CD channels their influences which range from Tool, Elton John, Motley Crue and the Foo Fighters. Just wrap it up in “hookladen heavy rock” and voila – it’s a present from Forever Falls to YOU. Maybe you need a visual present? If so, check out their DVD called "Inside the Details." It’s a “funny and insightful” documentary into their rock-and-roll world. 2011 will bring more touring opportunities for the band. Rainchild Is “Learning To Love the Type of Trouble They’ve Been Getting In” By Rhonda Meredith Or so the lyrics go in “Wings.” The song is one of three tunes on their recently released independent studio EP called “Anatomy 1/4.” My technical opinion is that it’s “beyond good.” I can say that since I have been listening to the songs over and over for a while now. They are addicting. “Again” and “Watershed” are both very melodic. All of the song lyrics are very personal. “Anatomy 1/4” is raw, bluesy and more like ’70s rock than modern. Rainchild coins their style as “Gulf Coast Rock.” The name “Rainchild” makes me think of an era when it was all about the music. I asked Dustin Condon (vocals) about the name and he said, “Rainchild is four people functioning as one entity. Rainchild would be that entity’s name.” The said entity began performing around the Houston area in 2006. Rainchild has opened for The Hunger, headlined during Galveston’s Mardi Gras, has been a Texas Buzz band twice in 30 days at Scout Bar and came in first place in the House Of Blues Battle of the Bands Showcase last September. The win ensures they land an opening spot for a national band’s tour stop at HOB in 2011. Rainchild's main goal is to “make a big impact on the Texas music scene and provide good quality entertainment to live
music concert goers.” Condon adds that the musical journey has been a “labor of love getting the music out to the fans.” If you cannot make it out to see the band live, then go to iTunes or CDBaby and download “Anatomy 1/4.” The EP was recorded at Sound Arts Recording Studio and produced by Jim Finley Productions. THE HECTIC: Continued From Page 60 Then, just when your eyes adjust to the dark and DJ Hardcore has situated himself behind the turntable, you start to zone in on his mask. It gives me the creeps. I love it. Don’t judge me. Owen and Reed typically have on white face paint that almost glows. Trying to see Pride in the back of the stage though the wall of fog is just about impossible, but you will HEAR him. While 2010 was been a breakout year for The Hectic, it’s apparent there is no slowing down anytime soon. “We want to keep living up to the honor that was recently bestowed upon us with our 2010 “Best Industrial Band” music award nomination from The Texas Buzz. The Hectic is getting really close to gaining commercial acceptance in the larger venues in and around the state and primarily in Houston,” Tinsley states. “In 2011 we are going to keep winning over our fans one at a time and keep building a good, strong and loyal fan base that's built out of friends and people that actually connect with our energy on and off the stage. We hope to keep growing in some of the other Texas markets. For us the trick has always been to expose new fans to us at a live show and

then they'll stay on board.” One fan who has been with The Hectic through thick and thin is Tera Bible Wright. You mention The Hectic and she smiles from ear to ear. Wright says with so much excitement, “The Hectic is diverse group within themselves and has a badass stage show! Plus they treat you like family rather than just a fan.” The Hectic is currently writing and recording new material for a future release. “We will have a series of singles available electronically through all the digital media outlets. When we get a good 12-13 ready, we'll print up some discs and release the physical copies traditionally at that point,” says Tinsley. Brewers Association announces revised Craft Brewer definition The board of directors of the Brewers Association (BA), the trade association representing the majority of U.S. brewing companies, has voted to change the BA's designation of "small" in its definition of a "craft brewer." The Association's board of directors also has revised its bylaws to reflect the change. In the BA's craft brewer definition, the term "small" now refers to any independent brewery that produces up to 6 million barrels of traditional beer. The previous definition capped production at 2 million barrels. The changed definition is currently in effect and can be reviewed on the BA website, BrewersAssociation.org. The change to the bylaws went into effect December 20, 2010. In the Brewers Association's bylaws, two classes of membership (Professional Packaging Brewers and Associate membership) have been redefined with a qualifying barrelage of 6 million barrels versus 2 million barrels. The association cited several reasons for the change, including the recognition that "small" is a descriptive term relative to the overall size of the industry. "Thirty-four years have passed since the original small brewers tax differential defined small brewers as producing less than 2 million barrels," said Nick Matt, chair of the Brewers Association board of directors and chairman and CEO of F.X. Matt Brewing Company. "A lot has changed since 1976. The largest brewer in the U.S. has grown from 45 million barrels to 300 million barrels of global beer production." Matt added, "The craft brewer definition and bylaws now more accurately reflect and align with our government affairs efforts." On the legislative front in 2010, the Brewers Association supported H.R. 4278/S. 3339, which sought to update the cap on an excise tax differential for small brewers to 6 million barrels per year in production for their first 2 million barrels.
Retaining Market Share for Craft Brewers The industry's largest craft brewer, The Boston Beer Company, is poised to become the first craft brewer to surpass 2 million barrels of traditional beer within the next few years. Loss of The Boston Beer Company's production in craft brewing industry statistics would inaccurately reflect on the craft brewing industry's market share. In addition to Boston Beer, the current growth trajectory of other sizable BA member breweries places them on a course approaching the 2 million barrel threshold in the coming years. "With this change to the craft brewer definition and BA bylaws, statistics will continue to accurately reflect the 30-year growth of market share for craft brewed beer," said Matt. "Brewers Association statistics on craft brewers will continue to keep pace with the growth of the industry."

Striving To Be A Sanctuary From The Storm By Rhonda Meredith You can’t miss the bright green building with purple and black accents at the corner of East Nasa Parkway and Seventh Street. When it catches your eye, your first thought may be “Has it always been painted like that and I have never noticed? No, I would have noticed…” and then your second thought might be “I wonder what’s inside…” Well, let me tell you. The Texas Hippie Connection (THC) is the largest smoke shop in Texas. Wait, wait, wait… Smoke shop? Yes. But let me tell you what I see through the eyes of a non-smoker. The outside of 2234 East Nasa Parkway in Seabrook is crisp and clean with comfy patio furniture adorning the front. Regularly, this area is filled with people who smoke hookah, people who are hanging out with those who smoke hookah, musicians performing an impromptu set and sometimes even pets. The vibe is laid back, friendly and come-as-you-are. Oh, and when there aren’t any musicians hanging out, good music is still being played through the sound system. The inside of the first floor is another really cool place with unique gift items for friends and family that “may be hard to buy for since they have everything” kind of people – there is one in every family. Anyhow, on the shelves were peace candles, a Grateful Dead fleece throw, beach towels featuring The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix, neon

flower stickers, smoking accessories, apparel, incense and burners and (my personal favorite) candles! The candles smelled so good and had names of “Italian Cream,” “Choolii Rose” and “Ocean of Grass.” There is plenty of room to sit and read various magazines. (You can pick up a copy of The SCENE Magazine!) Fresh doughnuts seem to be a staple the check-out area. Nice touch. Upstairs is something you have to see. It’s called “The Glass Gallery.” The gallery is currently home to thousands of water pipes that are for sale. Over 100 artists have contributed to gallery. The asking price for these pieces are anywhere from $10 to $6,000. It was a beautiful sight. Each water pipe is custom detailed with brilliant colors. While I was standing in the gallery on this particular day, a lady with her dog was perusing the glass; newbies off the street were mingling with those who are no longer customers, but now THC friendly regulars, who were in turn saying hello to Turtle. Who or what is Turtle? I am glad you asked... The Texas Hippie Connection’s place of business is as unique as its owner Turtle. Sorry, I did not ask why or how he acquired the nickname, but he does like green. His dreads are highlighted in that color. Turtle grew up around the Bay Area and always knew he wanted to own a smoke shop. As early as 14 years old, it was mildly irritating to him that he couldn’t enter a smoke shop. But at 16, he went into one anyway. Then he went into another. Several ideas begin to form as Turtle saw what was right and wrong in the industry. Becoming a business owner stayed close to his heart as he got older and travelled for inspiration. In fact, the Glass Gallery has influences from shops in Amsterdam and South Lake Tahoe. - Continued on Next Page

THE SCENE COVER THAT ALMOST NEVER WAS This month’s back cover featuring The Texas Hippie Connection resulted in a significant amount of internal debate at The SCENE Magazine’s International Headquarters. Twice!
tioned if we knew “what restaurant is going in on Nasa Road 1 next to where Bailey’s was in Seabrook?”
First, there was the matter of whether a Hookah bar or lounge belonged on the cover at all. Although few would describe the members of our management team as prude, we aren’t smokers. And while we don’t believe in judging those who are, as recently as last month, we rejected a photo that was scheduled to run prominently in the December issue because we didn’t want to “glamorize” smoking. But maybe we do open ourselves up to fair criticism for being hypocritical as I admit, we don’t have a problem promoting alcohol on our covers.
And the buzz has continued since the opening as the result is a very unique and apparently successful business. And one that is visually impressive inside and out even to those who aren’t into hookahs or hippies. Considering the Hippie Connection’s location among multiple vacant buildings now in foreclosure that tell a story of business failure, it is nice to see something unique and dynamic succeed. Although I’m not likely to light up a hookah, I find the venue very inviting, comfortable and look forward to utilizing the free WiFi to work while pursuing a caffeine (my drug of choice) buzz.
In the end, we decided since hookah bars are legal (for those 18 and over) and have been around and accepted for years in many different cultures, we would not rule out featuring the Hippie Connection just based on smoking alone. So then the question was is there enough interest in the venue or newsworthiness to justify a cover feature? The answer to that was ultimately yes. I can’t think of many new businesses in the 105-issue history of The SCENE that has generated more conversation and buzz. As soon as the paint started going up transforming the abandoned, stale building that once housed multiple failed restaurants (Don Juan’s and Armando’s most recently), people started talking and our staff was constantly quesWhat is a Hookah? Hookah refers to the practice of smoking flavored tobacco through a tall, ornate pipe that sits on the floor; the hookah pipe has long been a popular past time for centuries of many cultures and is part of life across the Middle East. The parlors first opened in the United States decades ago in the immigrant quarters of New York and Los Angeles. But recently parlors have opened in college towns all over in the country and is often regarded as a novel and chic way to socialize and embrace multiculturalism. The effect of hookah on health is an issue. Medical research is scarce on the effects of hookah, although doctors agree that smoking any kind of tobacco is not healthy. But users claim that because tobacco smoke is drawn through water contained in the hookah pipe, the smoke is far less harmful than cigarettes or cigars -- an assertion that is often debated.

Over a year and a half ago, he opened the Texas Hippie Connection at its first location down the street in a strip center. THC rapidly began to outgrow that spot and Turtle moved his business to the current location only a few months ago. “This shop was built by the people of my community,” he says sincerely. Friends pitched in to help Turtle open the new shop pretty quickly. Through the fresh paint and new furniture, Turtle remained constant in his vision. THC strives to be a “sanctuary from life’s storms” for its customers. Last month, THC celebrated the grand opening of the new building in style with food, music (Check out the related article on Footpie in this issue), vendors such as Verdad Designs and Advanced Body Art. Turtle and his staff were on hand to make sure every guest was taken care of. You will notice that when you walk into THC on any given day, the staff is extremely

But once we recieved the photos from the Hippie Connection cover shoot, I do admit I had second thoughts about the cover. Out of 210 published covers, either myself or Betsey, my partner in business and life, have shot all but nine. This was one of the nine and probably not what we would have come up with. From an artistic standpoint, the final shot by Bryan Anderson of Beauty In Art may be one of the best cover photos ever considering it shows and tells so much. For an editorial board of non-smokers already struggling with the subject matter, these photos were probably too good and too effective. But after more debate and conversation, we obviously decided to stick with Anderson’s photo. Other options I came up were less creative, less dynamic and ultimately less likely to grab attention from across a room, which is what we want our covers to do. I’m pretty sure there won’t be another SCENE cover like this and I know some of our competition will try to use this to what ever advantage they can. But in the end, I stand by the cover and the rights of people to smoke even If I don’t and likely won’t.
One last thought about THC, Turtle is at the shop a lot and I asked him about that. He was thoughtful and responded, “You get what you give.” I asked if that was his best business advice to give to someone thinking about starting a business. Footpie Is As Unique As Their Name By Rhonda Meredith Bass player Matt Metcalf used to call ice cream “footpie” when he was a little boy. Metcalf may shake his head after reading that this is this is now forever in print, but let’s just think about how far the word “footpie” has come... The mispronunciation of the childhood treat became the unusual name of the ever unique three-piece reggae rock band Footpie. Footpie unofficially began in 2008 when Charlie Danford (vocals, guitar) and Metcalf “really got into reggae” and the self-taught duo began creating original material. They took some time honing their skills and brought a drum machine into the mix. The drum machine became a diva, so human drummers came in and out a revolving door while Footpie continued to evolve. Some of the best jokes begin with “So sitting at a bar one night...,” but this
night was no joke. Danford and Metcalf were out at a bar when they ran into Daniel Hogan (drums). Hogan was asked to join in on the musical journey, and, as the fates would have it, he agreed. So, Footpie officially formed in June 2009. Since then, Footpie has been seen performing at the likes of Doc’s, Scout Bar, Mainstage on Main, Hugh & Jeff’s and as far out as College Station and Port Aransas. They were nominated for best reggae band in the Houston Press 2010 Music Awards. Again, their music is reggae, but you can definitely hear the harder influence of the rock and punk genres. Very cool. The SCENE Magazine caught up with Footpie at the Texas Hippie Connection’s grand opening in Seabrook in December and was impressed with Footpie’s laid back style as well as their musical capabilities. Danford reminded me of Adam Sandler, and it was as though Footpie just kind of rolled out of bed with the thought “Let’s play music today and have a great time.” I mean that in a good way and told Danford my thought. He further explained it this way, “We have never tried to act and look like a band. Footpie is just three dudes that love playing while having a good time and attitude. We like to ham it up onstage and engage the audience.” In 2011, Footpie plans on performing more – maybe further out regionally. They will probably work on an EP. They scrapped the last one because they didn’t like it. Footpie’s free spirits go where the gigs take them. They seize the day and don’t look back. I love that and so does their “Footmob”. Footpie’s close connection with Shark Attack led them to partner with Boardroom Entertainment out of South Shore Harbour. Webster's own Premiere Cinema NASA Dollar 8 hosts THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW every Saturday at midnight with a live cast performing along with the film. If you haven't experienced RHPS live before, you just need to break down and do it. There's nothing more enticing then losing yourself in your own geekdom – come on, admit it already! Also showing at a theater nearby is one of my top films of 2010, Darron Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN. Almost immediately after the screening, I Tweeted: “The struggle for perfection is often rife with tragic consequences; in BLACK SWAN Aronofsky focuses on an obsessive ballet dancer whose achievements cost her sanity – ironically, creating a perfect film.” I'll be the first to admit that I haven't always dug Aronofsky's films – I often find them trite and cliche. Yet his last two pictures (including audience favorite THE WRESTLER) have struck me in such a way I can't quite express. Aronofsky's use of the grotesque and weird captivate a whole world of addiction (and a positive addiction at that!) in an entirely new way – it's not something I'm willing or able to forget or pass off. It's so much more important than that. Somehow Aronofsky manages to capture exactly the killer instinct all humans possess – whether we hold on to or suppress it. In the convenient age of Netflix or Redbox, it's easy to sit back at home and watch the latest releases – and trust me, I do it nightly. But to completely write off the cinematic experience is disheartening. Being the social creatures that we are, it's sometimes necessary to plop yourself down in the middle of a movie theater and engage yourself in the exact same sensations and share the exact same experiences as the other human beings around you. As lemming-ly as it sounds, sometimes it's just really neat to laugh out loud or cry with others. Collective experiences seem to bring more meaning and value to what's occurring onscreen. That, and you're less likely to interrupt the experience because of a telephone call or a sudden urge to check your Facebook.

A Taste Of Space 2011 EPICUREAN EVENING AT SPACE CENTER HOUSTON Thursday, February 3 • 6:30-9 p.m. It’s that time of year again! A Clear Lake favorite is almost upon us again when diners can sample more than 40 restaurants, sip on their choice of various adult beverages, enjoy live entertainment and get entry into Space Center Houston all on one ticket. The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Epicurean Evening will be held on Thursday, February 3 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The popular event features food, spirits, a silent auction and live music in a family-friendly environment. This is the ninth year Epicurean will be held at Space Center Houston where there’s something for everyone to do while sampling bites from as many of the 40-plus restaurant booths as one can visit. Adult tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Children’s tickets ages 4 to12 years are $10, and children 3 and under are free. Presale tickets can be purchased from the Chamber office at 1201 NASA Parkway and Randall’s Clear Lake City Blvd. and Randall’s South Shore. Group discounts available. He competed in 6 US Youth Championships in Sailboards, Laser II’s and Lasers - Medaling twice. Scott was fortunate to have great coaches growing up like Mark Reynolds, JJ Isler and Brian Ledbetter - All Olympic Gold Medalists! Scott sailed collegiately for the College of Charleston on a team that won a National Championship and was never lower than 5th in the country. There Scott sailed Lasers and 420’s and earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Physical Education/Sports Medicine. Scott also did an Olympic 470 campaign with Johnny Lovell who later earned the Silver Medal at the Greece Olympics in the Tornado Class. Scott and Johnny finished 11th out of 40 boats in the US Trials with only 6 months of training and received the Silver Medal in the Olympic Classes Regatta that year. Scott has continued racing in Snipes, J-22’s, J24’s, Melges 24’s, Etchells, E-Scows and PC Class boats. It is quite clear that Scott’s passion is sailing and this passion is instilled in his students.

It’s 2011! Another year gone by, another opportunity to make new resolutions, new beginnings... I think almost everyone resolves to spend more time with family, try to do less, eat better and work out more. We really mean well, but when we start to get busy again and the new year starts to fly by, we fall back into our old habits. Why not try and shake it up this year with something totally new? I believe if we make things fun and interesting, if we keep ourselves OUT of habits, we can keep our minds free and open to the possibility of new adventures. And when we seek adventure and enjoy it, we only want more! One of my favorite things to do at the beginning of a new year is to clean out my closet and buy new workout clothes. It’s a ceremonial shedding of all the things I meant to do last year, and then re-arming myself with the tools I intend to use this year. A MOVIE LOVER'S NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION: Go See More Movies! That being said, there's nothing wrong with mainstream film and there's plenty of big screens in the Clear Lake Area to glue your eyeballs to.
I know what you're thinking: “Way to go, Captain Obvious! If you love movies, of course you'll go see them!” Ah, if only it were that simple. Sadly, I've been quite lax lately about actually picking myself up and attending a screening at a movie theater. Producing multiple films a year has also taken its toll – I remember seeing like five movies a day during my first stint at South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin back in 2007. At the 2010 festival I was lucky to see one or two a day. This year, I plan to remedy that – no matter what I'm doing. And you should too!
The Alamo Drafthouse is a concept movie theater chain designed for die hard movie freaks, where moviegoers enjoy a full menu of tasty food and alcoholic beverages. The Alamo programs cool, first run flicks, in addition to cult classics, the widely bizarre, and the unforgettable. What gives the Alamo its character is that each screening is an event – there's nothing cooler than seeing your favorite movie with a whole bunch of other people who understand you!
So, where do you go see movies in the Clear Lake Area? I mean, if you lived in Dallas it'd be a no brainer – I'd tell you to hit the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff. Yeah, I'm a partner – and you know this if you read The SCENE – but we're screening some real quality stuff. Unfortunately, it's a tad harder to come by 'round these parts. If you're looking to go against the grain, there's a small range of options, and most of them are in Houston; including the Alamo Drafthouse at West Oaks Mall, 14 Pews in the Heights, the Landmark River Oaks downtown, and the Aurora Picture Show which partners with venues all over Houston.
Case in point, if you can stand the long drive, on January 8 and 25 the Alamo presents the Coen Brothers' THE BIG LEBOWSKI quote-a-long. One of my personal faves, I'm one of the freaks who can literally quote the entire film. The ever-popular Jeff Bridges is Jeff Lebowski, but he calls himself “The Dude.” Mistaken for the other Lebowski (the millionaire), the Dude is quickly thrown into a mix of schemers and double-crossers after his rug is stolen from his apartment. With his Vietnam obsessed best buddy Walter (John Goodman) making things worse and worse, the only thing that can save The Dude is maintaining a strict drug regimen – and the occasional act of coitus. Two of the more unique venues in Houston are the Aurora Picture Show and 14 Pews. The former often partners up with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston or hosts frequent outdoor screenings and the latter is actually a converted church. January 7 and 8, you can check out MARWENCOL, one of my favorite documentaries of the year. Suffering brain damage after being assaulted, Mark Hogancamp creates a 1/6 scale WWII-inspired town in

Mary Evelyn stated, “We want to inform the community that we will have more classes, more diversity and music lessons this year.” Plans are underway to work with the Board of Directors as they put programs together and fundraise to keep the center in good standing for now and the future all while bringing the arts to the community. “No way to go but up!” she added in a positive light hearted manner. Increased networking is her goal for the organization as she wishes to expand the art community and its patrons. Mary Evelyn’s focus will be funding the New Year’s programs and events for 2011 for the non-profit center: Increase memberships, sponsors, grants, foundation support and the annual gala. The yearly gala is Sunday, January 16 at 7 p.m. at Space Center Houston. The $100 tickets are a tax-deductible donation for the art charity. The theme of the 2011 gala is “A Carnival of Cirque Celebration” as Cirque Magnifique performs. The internationally renowned performance group Cirque Magnifique from Canada will be doing aerial acts from the Space Center ceiling and many other balancing acts. Keeping with the performance circus theme with their colorful costumes, attendees are requested to wear colorful cocktail attire.

The annual treat of Rodeo Art for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is a special exhibit from January 13 to 27. This is kindergarten to 12th grade Student Art Exhibit from the Clear Creek and Friendswood Independent School Districts. Underwritten by the City of Nassau Bay and Lunar Rendezvous Festival, the opening reception is January 13, and is open to the public, with the elementary reception from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and the secondary reception is 5 to 6:30 p.m. Music will be by Vince Hargrove. Neil Simon’s, Barefoot in the Park, at CCCT Opening February 18 at Clear Creek Community Theatre is Neil Simon’s romantic-comedy, Barefoot in the Park. Set in 1963 in a dilapidated, sixth-floor walk-up, Barefoot in the Park, was inspired by the playwrights first marriage. It’s about newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter. Paul is a strait-laced attorney and Corie a free spirit, who must contend with a lack of heat, a skylight that leaks snow, several long flights of stairs, oddball neighbor Victor Velasco, and Corie’s well-meaning mother Mrs. Banks. After an adventurous dinner out with Victor and Mrs. Banks the couple has their first fight during which Corie decides Paul is a “stuffed shirt,” not right for her, and should be more spontaneous, running “barefoot in the park” would be a start. This Tony Awardwinning play will run February 18 through March 6. Curtains are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights with Sunday matinees at 2:30 and tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students and seniors and $10 for groups of 10 or more. On November 24, 2010, Heath Vargas was the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident. He left behind his four-year old daughter. The event admission celebrating the life of Heath "H-Dogg" Vargas is $10 per adult and $5 for children 12 and under. There will be BBQ plates sold for $10 each, and for children 12 and under, there will also be hot dogs for $5. Many silent auction items have been donated to the cause. The kids will enjoy the moonwalks, and the grown-ups will enjoy live entertainment by Organized Chaos, Abrahams Tree and KAOS.

Benefit News & Notes WINE & WISHES 2011 to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation Thursday, January 20 at Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille The Bay Area Chi Omega Alumnae Chapter’s 5th Annual Wine & Wishes will take place on Thursday, January 20, 2011. Hosting the event in 2011 will be Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille located at 487 Bay Area Boulevard. The charity event benefits the Make-A-Wish® Foundation of the Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana. Event co-chairs Holly Perry and Wendy Shaw wish to express thanks to the Bay Area for past support. “The last four years our community generated over $174,000 and sponsored 30 wishes! We look forward to the possibilities of Wine & Wishes 2011,” explained Shaw. According to Shaw, the upcoming event will be an evening filled GET UP-TO-DATE with live entertainment, a fivecourse wine dinner, raffle NEWS NOW! drawing and a live auction. Supporters can participate by sponsoring a table of eight, being an underwriter, donating an item, or just making a contribution. As a sponsor or underwriter, one receives “excellent exposure to an impressive group of attendees and help raise valuable dollars for children who are suffering from a terminal or
life-threatening illness. We value everyone’s consideration in making a donation to help us grant wishes for children in our community,” Shaw continued. I went to Texas Tech University to be a family financial planner and decided that it was not the path for me. Transferred to Art Institute of Houston and graduated with a degree in culinary arts. Worked with Andrew Lobeck at Merlion Restaurant. Became the sous chef of Lakewood Yacht Club for three years. My family always had strong influence on me for food, and my mother was always a big “foodie.” Specialty: I think I have a strong grasp on plate presentation. I think it’s important to have a dish look good as much as it tastes good. Signature Dish: I personally like smaller portions with beautiful plate presentations almost like the style of the chef Thomas Keller. One example of a signature dish I make at wine tastings sometimes is called “peanut butter and jelly.” It is a whole roasted piece of foi gras with fresh grapes, port reduction, and macadamia nut and golden chanterelle puree on toastettes. It resembles the simple classic with a much more gourmet fashion. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Carol Shelby (the racing legend and car designer). He had an interesting use of vocabulary. Every other word was “sh*t, hell or damn.” He was very nice and generous though. Please share one special cooking tip or technique with our readers: Don’t be intimidated by cooking something different. Don’t be shy about trying those famous Cuban black beans. A well-guarded secret recipe (as are all the recipes), many were taken from Wooten’s cookbook collection infused with his own creative ingredients.
As Hurricane Ike was approaching in 2008, the owner of Eagle’s Nest in Kemah needed a place to store some of his inventory. Wooten offered his private/group dining area, which has remained a permanent showplace for the items, as well as a cozy spot for patrons to dine (and even peruse or purchase some art and home decor).
South Shore Grille is for all family members during every economy, says Wooten, because a restaurant should not become unaffordable due to a recession. “We never overprice ourselves here because you never know what tomorrow will bring,” he says. “When I develop a menu, I make sure that I’ve got items for every member of the family in every economy that we could possibly face.”
People come here because of South Shore Grille’s hospitality, says Wooten. “We live it and breathe it every day,” he says. “We have a comfortable atmosphere (lots of natural light and dark wooden booths) and our tini-time bar offers up martinis from the classic to melon to raspberry, plus four types of mojitos and sangria (made at your table).” “We know half of all our customers by name,” says Wooten, “and want to know the other half as well.” So, stop by and tell Mickey your name. Latin & American Flavors Make South Shore Grille a Memorable Dining Experience days a week, Wooten doesn’t do much cooking or tasting due to his kitchen staff’s keen talent, but he likes to stay on top of things. “I sort of post myself here, “he says, “just to make sure everything is consistent.”
By Sue Mayfield Geiger Mickey Wooten has not personally been to Havana, but you wouldn’t know it from dining at his South Shore Grille where fusion reigns supreme. Wooten’s fascination with Cuba and his life-long experience with Latin cooking (as well as his vast collection of Cuban and South American cookbooks) presented itself threefold when Wooten’s first chef came on board in 2004. “He was from Argentina,” says Wooten, “plus we worked together creating the popular recipes that are on our menu today.”
From Angus steaks to hamburgers and Cuban sandwiches, the menu is quite versatile with over 30 items under $10. Also, there is no extra charge for sharing plate items. Wooten says his main objective is to not only keep his customer base steady, but to also keep them happy.
Although the Latin influence was important—“I wanted to have some character in the menu and not be just another American grille”—it was a great way for Wooten to have some fun in the kitchen and experiment with fusionstyle cooking by playing around with sauces, soups and introducing dishes like Cuban black beans and Cuban bread pudding. A native Houstonian, much of Wooten’s youth was spent on Galveston Bay where his grandfather (a charter member of Lakewood Yacht Club) kept a 44-foot Chris Craft yacht. With childhood memories of the old Seabrook draw bridge and Muecke’s fish market, Wooten got a taste of the salt air and it stuck. (Sadly, the Chris Craft got washed away with Hurricane Carla in 1961.) With a constant yearning to live coastal, Wooten finally got his wish when the bay area grew big enough to make the move feasible. The year was 1988 and he took a job at Jimmy Walker’s in Kemah. Having worked previously at various Houston restaurants like Bud Bigelow’s, Bordman’s, and the Lantern Inn, Wooten was no stranger to the food business. Now in his South Shore Grille kitchen six
Popular dishes include: prime rib, rainbow trout, crab cakes, stuffed jalapenos, and the tasty daily lunch specials: steak and cheese enchiladas (Monday), crawfish etouffee (Tuesday), prime rib salad (Wednesday), Cuban fish tacos (Thursday), fried catfish (Friday) and omelets (Saturday) where you have five appetizing choices, like the aptly-named Outstanding Omelet – three eggs, red potato, red bell pepper, onion, tomato, mushrooms, prime rib, bacon and cheddar. Nightly dinner specials include fried shrimp (Monday), prime rib (Tuesday/ Wednesday/ Saturday), fish tacos (Thursday) and fried catfish (Friday). Veggies arrive fresh daily, and all sauces are created from scratch. Signature dishes (like Seafood Salad Louie and Cuban Chicken Melt) demand that you top them off with the Cuban bread pudding (rich, creamy, and deliciously intoxicating). Key lime pie and the Island brownie are just as inviting. Wonderful salads – loaded with avocados and tomatoes – are a lunchtime fave, but do try the Hemingway-inspired Cuban sandwich (roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, and Creole mustard grilled on a French roll). - Continued on Page 13
