SUSTAINABLE, LOCALLY RAISED FOOD TRANSITIONS INTO EXTRAORDINARY MENU AT BARBED ROSE By Sue Mayfield Geiger I am feasting on stewed local okra from Froberg’s Farm made with potatoes, tomatoes, onions and nigella sativa (black onion seeds). It is something special that the Barbed Rose sous chef has put together to accompany a red fish dinner entree. I am lucky enough to sample this delicacy beforehand as well as some onion chili rings and crispy beer battered flounder served on a smear of malt vinegar tartar sauce. But the four delicately fried oysters sitting atop thick, smoky bacon pieces garnished with tangy, sweet homemade jalapeños really get my attention.
Schneider, “and if it just came out of the earth, it is what we are going to buy – green onions, okra, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries and whatever is fresh.” They try to procure as much locally grown produce possible. “Our first goal is local, then 100-mile radius and lastly, within the state of Texas,” adds Schneider, who does admit that if they have to go beyond those boundaries, they source it out, but only for something that is not available locally.

Open a little more than six months, the Barbed Rose has already won ten Best of City Search Houston awards, and named one of 2010’s best new restaurants by food guru Alison Cook. Joe Schneider, Patrick Burford and Chef Jason Chaney own and operate the Barbed Rose – located at the end of a dead end street in old downtown Alvin. Situated across from a city park gives the place a natural feel and offers a nice view of trees and a sloping terrain. With just 15 tables in the main dining area (there is also a Burger Bar next door) the atmosphere is intimate due to dark beadboard ceilings and hardwood floors. Schneider ended up in Texas (via New York and Florida) after his parents moved here. He learned the food business while in charge of kitchen operations at various officers’ clubs while in the Army. His professional career veered toward the scrap metal industry for several years before the foodie urge reeled him into being a restaurateur. - Continued on Page 16

The Barbed Rose Continued From Page 10: And the urge has paid off. “It’s a dream come true with hard work involved,” says Schneider, who purposely chose to open his establishment in Alvin due to being five minutes from his house. Also owner of the adjacent property and buildings nearby, Schneider will soon open his own meat market and deli along with a bakery and tea room. Cold cuts will be made inhouse, steaks will be cut to order and all baked items (artesian breads and pastries) made from scratch. “We’ll be doing our own hams, salami, andoui, everything,” says Schneider, who will be processing the old-school way, just like that of his grandfather, who was a meat packer. Chaney – educated at the Culinary Institute of America in New York – has worn his chef’s hat in Switzerland and Italy. The new trend to “eat where your food lives” is something he takes quite seriously. “The demand for local food is actually something that is reverting backwards, because food used to always be supplied locally and not necessarily trucked in,” says Chaney, adding that people have become more aware of their carbon footprint. Everything offered at Barbed Rose is seasonal and cooked fresh – you won’t find a can opener in this chef’s kitchen. A MENU LIKE NO OTHER Their Certified Angus beef is locally raised as is Akaushi beef (akin to Kobe) and Wagyu beef (crossbred). Akaushi contains high concentrations of oleic acid, which is a heart-healthy fat that has a high ratio of mono-saturated fats to saturated fats. Eating this beef can actually lower your cholesterol. House-made bacon and sausages are smoked on the premises. Wild game (venison, bison, antelope, wild boar and ostrich) mostly comes from the Texas hill country and water buffalo (leaner than bison) comes from South Texas. All sauces are homemade, including the mayo, mustard, ketchup and Worcestershire. “If I can’t make it, we won’t offer it,” says Chaney. The menu at Barbed Rose is broken down into starters/soups/salads/sandwiches/entrees and Trick-Out-YourBurger, which gives you a choice of meat (beef, buffalo, poultry, crab cake, Portobello); cheese (Swiss, American, Provolone, Texas Goat, Pepper Jack, Smoked Cheddar); toppings (mushrooms,

jalapeños, onion chili rings, caramelized onions, bacon, avocado); sauce (mustard, garlic aioli, mayo, crystal bacon aioli, malt vinegar tartar, chipotle ketchup) and a variety of sides. Some of the entrees include BBQ shrimp and grits, baconwrapped filet, pan seared redfish, and smoked pepper steak with sides like truffled mac/cheese and fresh vegetables in season, but you want to be sure and check out the Butcher Board Specials that are broken down into Hooves (prime/Wagyu/Kobe), Horns (wild boar/buffalo/venison), Feathers (duck breast/quail/ostrich) and Fins (jumbo shrimp/alligator/scallops). This changes depending on what is available. A Business Express lunch is also available weekdays. Desserts – like bananas foster bread pudding, Grand Marnier cheesecake, and sticky coffee cake – are not only eye popping, but taste bud popping. Weekend reservations are highly recommended unless you don’t mind a long wait. Of course, you could wander over to the Burger Bar and chill while waiting, watch a little TV and munch down on some of those fried oysters with jalapeños atop the smoky house bacon, or as Schneider and Chaney like to call them – “a party in your mouth.”

NOAH’S ARK: The place for party animals By Adam Donaghey You don't need a worldwide flood to set sail aboard Noah’s Ark; nor, do you need to hike up Mount Ararat! Just take a seaside drive to the city of Bacliff and you'll find Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill – a sprawling seafood and grill dining destination located on the edge of Galveston Bay, offering tasty treats and stunning, unobstructed views of the bay. From the outside, Noah’s Ark looks like a modular tree house, with expansive side patios and multi-level rooftop decks overlooking the sea - each named after a bird (except the indoor dance floor, named after the mythic unicorn). A giant tree looms over, shading patrons from the sun; along with a welcoming palapa, under which guests are greeted on busy days - perfect for the spring and summer weather! Go inside and you'll feel like you're in the hull of the giant Ark itself. Built with varying dark aged woods, including two great beams roughly thirty feet in length over the upper deck, the Ark provides a uniquely interesting handcrafted look you just won't find in most modern restaurants. Most fascinating is the fact that owner Fred Lyttle and his staff have been responsible for all of the renovating and expansion over the years – and they’ve never shut down because of it! Lyttle hales from Ohio, where he owned and operated three restaurants; but for the last 30 years, his heart has belonged to the Bay Area. A carpenter by trade, Lyttle opened his restaurant 14 years ago with a structure one-third the size of what it is today and has been adding on ever since. Just like Noah, Fred built the Ark. The restaurant’s name comes from a liquor ad Fred saw which depicted a cartoon version of the Biblical Noah’s Ark in the background with caricatures of animals toasting drinks. Instantly, Fred named his restaurant “Noah’s Ark” and ever since it’s been the “place for party animals!” The theme is seen throughout the restaurant complete with menu items named for animals and a large mural that acts as the backdrop to the restaurant’s dance floor and stage. With one of the largest menus around, the Ark serves a variety of seafood, oysters on the half shell, Angus burgers, steaks and much more. Popular menu items include the Ark’s signature Hot Mermaids (shrimp wrapped in bacon with a slice of jalapeño, dipped in beer batter, breaded and deep fried) and Hot Chicks (a Mermaid with chicken instead of shrimp); a rich seafood gumbo, and the Fisherman’s Platter (a sampling of fried fish, shrimp, oysters, stuffed crab and crab cakes). Signature drinks include the super premium 42-ounce “Margarilla”

BAY AREA ART SPRINGS INTO ARTS ACTION WITH PHOTO WORKSHOP & MORE By Domino Taylor
Kemah Coastal Photo Workshop by Ruth Burke Ruth Burke, local internationally published photographer will lead the Kemah Coastal Photo Workshop on April 8, 9 and 10. Registration is taking place in this month, so reserve your spot now. The famous Kemah Boardwalk welcomes visitors and photographers from all over the world. This event will allow the photographers to take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain access to private exclusive waterfront locations for spectacular photography. Ruth will take students to her favorite locations in Kemah pointing out the diverse photographic opportunities and compositions that each area offers at different times of the day. Students will learn to understand what the camera is doing when capturing an image and how that can relate to the image processing software such as Photoshop. The goal of this coastal photo workshop is to help photographers understand how to control the final look of the image, capturing the information needed to make a fine art print while having a fun time photographing Kemah. Ruth will work one on one with each participant, regardless of skill level or type of equipment to ensure everyone leaves the workshop with new ideas about creating a great photograph. Through photography the students will discover Kemah on Galveston Bay, the wildlife, coastal marshes, nautical landscapes, beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the seaside character with working shrimp boats offering the local catch of the day. The City of Kemah is sponsoring this coastal photography event. The event will

open Friday with lunch and workshop on understanding the camera and on location shoots using late afternoon light. Saturday will be a sunrise photo session and travel other destinations for photographing scenes in different lights, after lunch another session with prints made and a class for brief critiques. A sunset cruise will end the Saturday photo session. Sunday will be a free time to photograph again at sunrise and/or make more prints. April is one of the best times to photograph Kemah. Flocks of regal White Pelicans spend their time along the coastal area from October through April. Majestic trees are budding and the coastal marshes are flush in new growth. The cost for the three-day event is $300 and half session is $200. All students also receive a Workshop Instructional Manual. International Steel Drum Musicians to play at Pan Jam The annual Kemah Steel Drum Festival, Pan Jam is extended this year to two days, March 26 and 27. Headliners are Freddy Harris III, and Mustofa Alexander both from New York City. They will be featured both days. Also in the line-up is the San Jacinto College with director Mike Mezma performing Saturday afternoon and well as the Lone Star College with director Jeff Gleason. Sunday the University of Houston Steel Drum Band, “The Pantagonist” playing with director Blake Wilkins. Also on the local talent scene will be Hanna’s Reef, Short and Tall of It, Sean Richards, Texas Caribbean and the Outriggers. I'm writing this month's film column on location in Dallas on first time director Ryan Harper Gray's THIS IS A LOVE STORY, a feature narrative about a married couple who both find themselves in extramarital affairs, only to have their infidelity bring them back together. Well, sorta.

Blake Hathaway is a straight-laced photographer who's lost track of where his life is headed. Enter Delilah Moon, a lively young sex-object who sweeps men off their feet at a moment's glance.
Blake is not immune. Although he is a married man, Blake can't resist the temptress. His romance with Delilah, however, may spark something new and unique in his otherwise dismal, lonely life. That, or it could be his downfall. Molly Hathaway is suddenly faced with the realization that she may quickly be out of a job. The theater she works for is going under, and either they raise money to save it or they must shut it down. Molly's
passion for the theater is uncompromising; but so is her attraction for a particular colleague. When separated, Blake and Molly seem totally at ease with the world around them and the people that fill it. The tension that drives them apart is ultimately what causes them to find themselves as individuals. Gray's interested in the modern relationship and what it means to be monogamous even if it means falling out of love. "I wanted to make this movie," says Gray, "because I am fascinated by the rules in relationships. Whether self-inflicted or imposed by others or society." He believes monogamy is "man made" with all the problems man-made things have. When pressed, he mentions his parents have been together for 40 years. Though he respects their decision, he doesn't fully understand it. LOVE STORY breaks the traditional rules regarding relationships. In this case, Blake cheats on Molly, and he's all the better for it. And the audience will find themselves rooting for him along the way. - Continued on Page 40

INSPIRATION FOR CREATIVITY Is there anything you are totally passionate Heaven, at right, behind the scenes at a photo shoot. about? What truly inspires you? What motivates you to manifest your hopes into reality? Why do we get stuck in a rut, when we have the best of intentions for change? Be it a rut in your job, personal life, fashion sense or hairstyle we all experience the infamous hurdle we can’t quite get past. I was practicing on some mannequins when my young, eager salon apprentice, Sadie, approached me with a very poignant question, “How do you be creative?” I just looked at her and thought, "I don’t know?!" As I lay in bed that night, I pondered the question intently. What I discovered was a system of beliefs that I use consistently in any area that I desire to be more creative. First, it’s very important to have a role model for yourself. It’s very easy to model yourself after someone who has done the very thing you are looking to do. I have read books from fashion to accounting, from Malcolm Gladwell to Anthony Robbins. Entering the world of people who are successful allows you to see what makes them that way. Reading practical, or autobiographical books are a great source of inspiration. The dreams that swirl around my head come to fruition much quicker after I have been juiced with an amazing story about someone who came from nothing to do the unthinkable. It almost makes my dream seem easier. Next, I grab any opportunity to surround myself with likeminded people who have a common interest. I keep a great stock of all tools, materials and information handy so that anytime creativity strikes, I am prepared to practice. Go to classes, training, attend conventions, watch online tutorials, better yet, teach someone else. The more you practice the greater you become and also the more creative. The book Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell is a study of some of the most successful people in the world. And the one common denominator they all have was practice10,000 hours worth! In order to master your craft 10,000 hours is
in order, so think of all the things you will learn just by practicing! One of my favorite techniques is just to LOOK. Really see. No matter your job or hobby, we all need to “rejuice.” Absorbing information visually is a great way to expand your repertoire. Tear out photos and words and create a journal or storyboard. My idea of a rejuice day is to sit at Borders with a coffee and pour through Italian or French Vogue. I analyze why they make me feel the way they do. Lastly, find times of quiet. This is often the hardest for most people. But it is fact that creativity ONLY happens in the quiet mind. When you have worked hard to study people you’d like to emulate, read up on theory and studied visuals, you must find a quiet space to absorb the information. There is an adage we use in the artistic field that says, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” We don’t operate in a vacuum! We must learn from others and really own the information. When we own something it’s only a seed. When it grows it is fertilized by your own belief systems and ideology. When it comes to fruition it truly belongs only to you. For example, watch American Idol and acknowledge the references from “cruise ship or karaoke sounding” to “amazing artist” even though everyone is singing cover music. When it comes from the inside, it truly is different.

So whatever your dream is – be it to design the living room of your dreams, be more creative with your wardrobe, create an amazing new ad campaign or even rebuild that car from high school motivation and inspiration have to come from somewhere. Follow these steps to immerse yourself and bring to life anything and everything you truly desire.
One of my personal goals was to be more “stylistic” with my wardrobe. Not just wearing the typical shirt and pants everyday, but how can I jazz it up? I want to feel like my wardrobe had pizzazz and that my clients could look up to me for inspiration and advice. I tackled this by first finding a “muse” someone who best represents my style. For example- I love, love, Kim Kardashian’s style. You can google or surf through magazines, tear out photos of outfits. As far as learning to stylize an outfit I have learned from the advice of actual fashion stylists with countless hours behind the camera at photoshoots. A stylist really uses the garment to make the adjective of the campaign come to life. And in those quiet moments at home I can use what I have learned, along with visuals and use my own

Feel The Steel! Pan Jam Steel Drum Festival Sat., March 26th & Sun., March 27 • Kemah Lighthouse District
The Kemah Lighthouse District will come alive with the beat of Steel Drums, Fire Dancers, Exotic Bird Shows, Pet Contest and a variety of entertainment as the 8th Annual Kemah “Pan Jam” Steel Drum Festival sets up shop on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27. “Pan Jam” is defined by authentic Caribbean steel drums, calypso and reggae musicians who have performed all over the world. The headliners for this year are Freddy Harris III and Mustafa, both of New York. The entertainment schedule also features Jerry Diaz and Hanna's Reef, San Jacinto College, and University of Houston-Clear Lake and Lone Star College steel drum bands and many other fabulous groups. There is a new Kidz Zone this year with entertainment for the little ones. The fun starts on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beverages and festival foods will be available in the Kemah Visitor Center parking lot (located at the corner of 6th and Bradford). Admission is free and there is plenty of free street parking surrounding the festival site. Performances by "Sonny the Bird Man" and his beautiful tropical birds and a hotly contested CASI Chili Cook Off, giant inflatables and lots of family fun round out the event. Pets are welcome to the event as well. They can enter the Bay Area Pet Adoption Pet Contest, and if you are feeling lucky, there is a raffle with various prizes. There are arts and crafts booths offering a variety of fun items, including fine arts and handmade crafts. Check the website for applications. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the participating College Steel Drum programs and Bay Area Pet Adoptions. On the Water SEA SCOUTS have new home at Lakewood Yacht Club The Sea Scouts constructed a new H pier to be their home for boating at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. Their fleet of sailboats now occupies 10 brand new slips in the club’s northwest harbor next to NASA Parkway. To celebrate, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in January. Rob Freas, Skipper for Sea Scout Ship 468 (a group or unit), explained that Sea Scouting is a high adventure division of the Boy Scouts of America consisting of co-ed youth between 13 and 20 years of age. “We teach the values of Scouting through sailing and seamanship. Lakewood has generously supported the Sea Scouting as their home since 2004,” he stated. Currently there are five ships at Lakewood involved with anywhere

They sponsor activities for larger groups as well, such as the Sea Scout Academy every spring for 200 youth for Sea Scout and seamanship training. They also run national programs such as the SEAL Course which is the highest advanced leadership training in Sea Scouting. Only the top 30 applicants from around the country are chosen. Six train at Lakewood Yacht Club while the others attend training in the Chesapeake Bay, Miami, Newport Beach and on Long Island Sound.

Through the Bay Access charitable association, four sailing scholarships are being offered this year to area youth sailors.
The first camp is the Seahorse Camp which runs from June 6-10 and is for 6th, 7th and 8th graders, ages 11 to 14. This is a stay-overnight camp in Lakewood’s clubhouse where meals and daily instructions will be provided. The second camp is a day camp called

Arts Column: Continued from Page 23 VASE to change venue this year VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event) is relocating this year to Clear Falls High School on April 8 and 9. In years past, this event was held at University of Houston – Clear Lake. The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) has sponsored VASE since 1994, and it is the nation’s only event of its kind. High School students are provided the opportunity to bring artwork created in their art classrooms to a regional event where they are interviewed by a certified juror who evaluates their work. Only academically eligible students in grades 9-12 from Texas can participate in VASE. This year, there were 20,000 entries and 1,000 students will be selected as State Qualifiers and advance to the State VASE, at Clear Falls High School April 8 & 9. At this state event, 100 art works will be selected to receive the Gold Seal Award, the highest honor for a Texas student artist. The Gold Seal Exhibit will be on April 11. Adding to the overall style of the film, Gray has chosen some uniquely Dallas locations to showcase his love affair with Delilah. Mostly taking place at the hip Belmont Hotel, a retro-fitted motor hotel from the 1940s with a spectacular view of the city, the romantic encounters take place upon a stunning southwest landscape. Additionally, we shot at the Dallas Contemporary, showcasing a vibrant textile installation made up of threads of varying colors. The chemistry between the two lovers is enhanced due to the beautiful work of art set between them. Tomorrow we shoot at the Texas Theatre. It's bizarre to be both the producer of the film and the representative of the location. But ultimately, it's a good choice for the movie, and it will add an historic flavor, upping the production value. Highlighting the City of Dallas, the locations add an interesting visual aspect to the film typically devoid in low budget, independent movies. It's a relationship film; but it's a relationship film set amongst a backdrop of amazing visual landscapes – sharp dialogue and subtle performances are sure to bring it home. SCENE NEW BAND ALERT!
It’s Time To Pay Attention To A.D.D. Four former members of another Clear Lake band that has recently parted ways have now formed a new band. Are you with me so far? Benji Bordelon (bass, vocals), Chris Hardy and Jeff Smith (guitars), Alex Slay (drums) all formally with ERASEtheVIRUS (ETV) have gotten together with Brooks Barley (vocals) and created A Digital Death (A.D.D.) A.D.D. has been described as an “industrial/rock/metal act.” With ETV having been such a staple in the Bay Area’s music scene, I wondered how similar the bands would sound. The verdict is not a lot really - at least not in my opinion. Bordelon picks up his Indoor Lighting bass and isn’t Nutrients • Pumps behind the keyboards anymore and Barley’s vocals are the biggest Climate Controls changes. A.D.D. has a more metal sound and I like it. Really, A.D.D. & Much More and ETV shouldn’t be compared though, but for now it’s inevitable. I believe most fans of both groups will say it’s like you love both of your kids equally, but in different ways and that’s ok.

A.D.D. supported the Genitorturers last month and is rehearsing for their opening spot in the Lords of Acid show later this month. I spoke with Bordelon before the Genitorturers show and he was happy with the direction the band is taking and there was very awesome news on the horizon. Currently, A.D.D. is sitting at #18 on the Reverb Nation metal charts for Houston. Their first album/EP will be sometime in 2011. Here is where The SCENE Magazine is going to give you the big scoop! A.D.D. literally just signed a record deal with the Sonic Angel Record Label out of Belgium. It’s the same label as the Lords of Acid! Bordelon says A.D.D. is so excited about this decision and is waiting for the next step from the label. At this point, the band is concentrating on recording new songs and production. Music is a trip. Seabrook’s new alternative rock band “The Drive” reminds us that it’s not the speed in which you travel, but it’s more about the route you take. And sometimes that means veering off the map a bit… The Drive didn’t start out on track – at least not the track they are on now. There was a different name, a heavier metal sound and basically a different line-up. Enter into a major construction area and exit that zone with Joshua Eggerbrect (vocals, guitar), Josh Kirksey (guitar, vocals), Daniel Guzman (bass, vocals), and Ricky Anderson (drums.)The Drive was born. The band’s name stems from the member’s passion for music. They have a drive inside them that keeps them travelling on course. This band knows there are pit stops along the way, but it is how one maneuvers the speed bumps and roadblocks that make us who are today and the added bonus is the future is an open highway. The reality is, the baggage one takes on their journey can translate into lyrics people will relate to and their hearts will respond to. The Drive knows this, and that’s why their songs are timeless. They now have a four-song demo you can pick up at the live shows. The Drive’s songs are mostly about emotions and relationships. “Face It” has a really cool guitar intro and the lyrical angst is apparent in the vocals. “Girl” has unique tempo changes, and it’s a different song. When you listen to it, you will hear the versatility of The Drive. “Damaged Goods” starts very low and melodic. I am such a

And I mentioned the live shows… A great live performance will accelerate a new band into the spotlight with music as the vehicle. The Drive is becoming a regular fixture in the Bay Area. You can catch them out at Zone 504’s Spring Break Bash on March 5. Their last show there had the venue filled up to the “Full” line. The fans are the fuel that keeps The Drive pumping on all cylinders. They want their shows to be memorable and worth seeing. The Drive also notes “We put a lot of time and dedication into making our songs and putting shows together because we want our fans to enjoy the music just as much as we do.” We are going to have to put the visor down when looking toward The Drive’s future… This group of hardworking guys thanks their supporters for riding shotgun on this journey. Marty Monte’s band Magazine’s official debut CD is called "It Ain't That Bad" and here is where I am going to interrupt. Mr. Monte, you are right. “It ain’t that bad” and you know what? This CD is really quite amazing… Thank you!
“So Long” is an absolutely beautiful tune with no vocals. It will be considered a classic as it showcases the band’s instrumental talent. The acoustic encores of “Reefer Blues” and “Gypsy Eyes” complete the CD rather nicely.
In a general sense, the CD is in the rock genre, but it sizzles. Sizzle rock genre? Yeah! You know when the wintry cold weather goes away and you step outside… At that moment, all you can feel is the heat of the sun on your body. You bask in the glow of the sun’s rays as they provide a sizzling blanket of comfort that feels really, really hot and really, really good. I swear the February cold spell just disappeared as soon as I started listening to “It Ain’t That Bad.” The CD features 13 tracks of pure “awesome-ness.”The opening song is “Gypsy Eyes” and it really sets the tone. I can’t lie – it’s my favorite. The song has a guitar solo that has you glancing around for a fire extinguisher and had me thinking of Jimi Hendrix.

“Forgotten Dreams” and “Dolly Dagger” have a Stevie Ray Vaughan kind of feel or maybe more of one of the Joe’s – Satriani or Bonamassa. I have listened to all of the songs countless times and catch a bit of each. “The Bottle Song” changes it up a bit and has a very cool chorus and piano. “L.A. Lullaby” and “Belvedere Hotel” stay consistent with Magazine’s very successful formula of melodic rock, but have a “modern 70’s feel.” Yes, I made up that term and it fits… “30 Day Notification” has traces of a Jimmy Buffett influence, while “Sleepless Mind” and “Turnaround Blues” offer alternative bluesy type of rock. “Reefer Blues” is based on a true story. It’s an ode to Marty Monte’s hometown of Port Arthur. In fact, it was one of Port Arthur’s finest

SMOKIN’ J’s: A Place To Leave Your Cares At The Door By Rhonda Meredith
The bar was full with regulars immersed in conversation. I headed to where my favorite part of any bar is – the stage area. Every Saturday night is live music at Smokin’ J’s. Tonight was Metal Cheese. The four-piece 80’s metal tribute band hammed it up, took requests and kept the ladies dancing. The poor jukebox was silent tonight, but no one noticed.
It was a hot night in the city… Sultry. Not really a breeze at all. The kind of weather that could make the smallest task seem foreboding. Pulling into the parking area at Smokin’ J’s, my eyes widened at the sight. Cars and trucks parked two deep in spaces! As I scanned the lot, any hope of a place to pull into was beginning to dwindle. The place was packed out early this Saturday night. Then I see the four sweetest words in the English language on a very humble white sign…
The bar just has a fun vibe. It’s a neighborhood place with very cool tables. (Make sure you check out the Texans table and any of the Budweiser tables.) The clientele is varied, but everyone is dressed casually and has the common goal to unwind and leave their cares at the door.

Zach Tate Band Releases New Music Video While Lady Gaga is frolicking her way up the music video charts with her hit, Bad Romance, Houston musician and videographer, Zach Tate, has his own idea of a bad romance, with his latest music video and single, Cowgirl. Inspired by “bad girl and baby sitter crushes” the artist had when he was very young, the video might offer some explanation of his love for tattoos, whiskey and motorcycles. “It’s somewhat autobiographical, “ explained Tate. “I’ve always had a fondness for rebellious women. Hank Williams Jr. said it well in his song, Outlaw Women - this is my song about those same type of women, the ones I knew growing up, the ones I know now.”

Shot primarily at the legendary Dickinson ice house, Ronnie’s Hog Heaven, the video depicts a typical night of raucous, barroom rumbling for Zach Tate and his southern rock band, complete with featured ‘bad girl’, Cheryl Manchac, on her Easy Rider-inspired chopper, cruising through the bar. “I’m inspired by people who aren’t afraid to live outside of convention. I think we captured that, along with the spirit of good time rock & roll. Ronnie’s was the perfect location. Everyone there was great to work with,” said Tate. Because actual music videos are shown less and less on MTV, Zach Tate is grateful for the leveled international playing field offered by You Tube and other digital media distributors. “I found an Iranian music site that had me and Bruce Springsteen right next to each other in their music videos rotation. Might have just been due to the fact that we’re alphabetically close... but I’m not complaining.”

Zach Tate’s music videos, including his super-low-budget, social experiment, The Google Song (featured in a documentary on Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin) and the short film/music video, Dashboard Jesus (from the 2009 release, Hurricane) have helped fuel surprisingly good CD and download sales in the Netherlands and Austria, as well as a busy schedule of Texas performances. “I expect we’ll be reaching Lady Gaga numbers - 339 million views - by the summer. You Tube is great. It’s not everywhere you can see authentic, tattooed, whiskey drinkin’, Texas cowgirls dancing in a rock & roll chorus line!” Coleman Tate Productions produced the music video in a short film narrative style, including a few dramatic scenes utilizing local actors, Kevin and Yuliana McElroy. By multiple measures, this year's party was funnest by far including a surprise appearance by Paparazzi Houston. Monica Rose and her South Coast Band cranked out ample energy powering the entire ship--These cats are *good*. The pirates of Krewe du Lac are renown for their incredible capacity to celebrate with gracious class (a good thing) else the tables and chairs would've been tossed overboard making the dance floor larger. Seriously! Krewe newcomer, Alan Stephenson (aka Big Slick and KAOS frontman), stood in for a couple super charged songs and twirled James Reese's frenzy South Coast Band switch a couple spins past aboard The FantaSea the stops. Wow, that was fun!!!! The party continued at the Pier 27 Tavern and hopefully rubbed off on you. And so we move on...

ON TO SPRING: Zone 504 hosted the year's first official patio crawfish party. Cheers! Last year's tastings were out-of-the-body experiences, so we couldn't miss this. Icy waters made harvests dicey, yet included many escaping last year's cages. Their size qualified as exports to Maine, but we ate them instead. Zone 504 was also the Clear Lake headquarters for Milton Miller who is Milton Miller,100daysofmadness.com on a 100 day run from Miami to Los Angeles raising money for kids that don't have any.

STRYPER: ABOUT TO PAINT CLEAR LAKE BLACK AND YELLOW Stryper live at Scout Bar on Monday, March 14 By Rhonda Meredith Who is ranked at #1 in the “Christian Pop & Contemporary,” #41 in “Rock,” and #79 in “Pop” best-selling music categories on Amazon? They are also #175 on Billboard as well. It’s the same group… Ok, if you read the article title, then you know it’s Stryper! Good job. Now, here is the next question. Ready, set go… Who just released an album covering Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, KISS, Judas Priest, Ozzy, and others? That question is a bit harder. Let me give you some clues. Yellow and black. Oh, they are #1 on Amazon’s “Christian Pop-” You say you got it? Good. The answer is Stryper again! Great job! Stryper’s latest offering “The Covering” was just released February 15th via Big3 Records (Sony) to absolutely rave reviews. Really there isn’t anything to not like about it. If you are a fan of songs from the 1970’s classic rock to the 1980’s metal music, then “The Covering” will make you a happy camper. Also, good news to note is that this album features Stryper’s original line-up of Michael Sweet (vocals, guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums.) The SCENE Magazine had the opportunity to speak with Michael Sweet last month about the album and about their touring schedule. Stryper is hitting the road and making only 18 tour stops during the first leg of their U.S. tour. Yes, Houston is one of them! On March 14 they will be at Scout Bar. Michael Sweet had to think a bit, but it was in 1984 when Stryper first
toured Houston and the last time was in 2009. Stryper will go international after these stops and then back in the U.S. for a second tour run.

The band has been rehearsing in Las Vegas in preparation for their 20-song set. Stryper’s Michael Sweet Twenty songs?!? Sweet says some of the songs they will perform live are covers not on the album and seven songs are older Stryper fan favorites that they haven’t played in a while. He also said with a smile that age will make you have a need to rehearse a little more. And this is where I had to inform (correct) him that we get better with age, of course! A SCENE Magazine reader wanted me to ask Sweet what the secret was in keeping a band together for a long time…so I did. His response was that Stryper was a Christian band, and they have a message of love. The band internally needs to exemplify this for those to see. Keeping a band together is a lot like a family. Keep your priorities right and the rest will follow. Sweet really is a cool guy to talk to. Rounding out the tracks on “The Covering” are songs originally from Sweet (the band, not Michael), the Scorpions, UFO, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, and (my favorite song “Carry On My Wayward Son”) Kansas. The album’s only new original song is the last one on the track list called “God.”
