Make the BURGER BAR at The Barbed Rose in Alvin
YOUR TOP SUMMER HANGOUT! By Sue Mayfield-Geiger
Trick-Out-Your-Burger
The train comes by intermittently with a mighty whistle, but it fits the ambiance of Alvin’s laid back Burger Bar at The Barbed Rose. The breezy, open air, ceiling fanned/picnic/roadhouse combination is casual and informal—Wrangler wearers and bikers welcome — and the burger menu is absolute genius.
Burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onion, and housecured pickles, and are priced to include your choice of one cheese and one topping. Additional toppings and sides are priced individually. Meat: Beef, Buffalo, Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breast, Crab Cake, Portobello Mushroom
Located adjacent to The Barbed Rose, Burger Bar is owned and operated by the same group of talented guys (Joe Schneider, Patrick Burford and Chef Jason Chaney) whose aim is to offer the best of both worlds and palates. For those who have a hankering for a good Texas burger with a different sort of twist, this is sure to become your favorite watering hole and chow-down eatery.
Cheese: Swiss, American, Provolone, Texas Goat, Pepper Jack, Smoked Cheddar Toppings: Mushrooms, Pickled Jalapenos, Onion/Chili Rings, Caramelized Onions, Barbed Rose Bacon, Avocado Sauce: Mustard, Garlic Aioli, Mayo, Crystal Bacon Aioli, Violet Mustard Cream, Smoked Chipotle Ketchup Sides: Sweet or White fries, Onion/Chili Rings, Grilled Veggies, Iceberg & Blue, House Salad.
So, why put a burger joint next to a high-end gourmet restaurant? “We wanted to offer something to those in the community who might not want to spend a lot of money, but still have accessibility to the lunch and dinner menu at The Barbed Rose,” says Chaney. Thus, burgers (any way you like them) are available as well as Philly Cheese steak sandwiches (shaved rib eye with provolone cheese and caramelized onions) and Kobe hot dogs (a combination of Kobe beef and other yummy trimmings) — all served on made-from-scratch buns baked fresh daily. Other Burger Bar goodies: Gumbo, soup of the day, hot spinach dip, alligator bites, country fried oysters atop bacon with pickled jalapeños, salads, and the remarkable shaved pork sandwich. “We grill pork loin, then it gets shaved and allowed to swim in a stock made of butter, thyme, shallots and bay leaf,” says Chaney, who adds that it is served on a bun with roasted mushrooms, avocado and Garlic aioli.
SUMMER SAVINGS! BURGER BAR 10% COUPON! Bring in this coupon to receive 10% off your entire meal at the Burger Bar (alcohol not included) between now and Labor Day (Sept. 5). OFFER NOT VALID WITHOUT COUPON. ONE COUPON PER TICKET PLEASE.
So getting back to basic burgers, the meat in a Burger Bar burger is primarily ground brisket (oh, yeah) mixed with trimmings from rib eyes, strip steaks and tenderloins (all butchering is done in-house). Both The Barbed Rose and Burger Bar use sustainable, local ingredients (when available), which includes the Crab Cake burger (crab fresh from the Gulf) and Portobello burger (mushrooms from Texas growers). The majority of the cheeses come from Brazos Valley Cheese, an artisan creamery in Waco, and all veggies are supplied by Froberg’s and other local farms. Be sure and ask about the Kid’s Menu — burger, mac & cheese, chicken tenders, grilled cheese or a BLT — all served with fries, and a real bargain at just five bucks. With a nice variety of beers, several are on tap like St. Arnold — Lawnmower and Summer Pilsner — Shiner Bock, Dos Equis and Land Shark.

The number one complaint that I hear from people is, “I love my hair when I leave the salon, but I can never make it look like that at home.” Dressing hair is an art form, and I am saddened when I see a client leave with a wet head. Every time you have your hair blown out by a professional, you not only get a great do for the next couple of days, but you can also learn a few new tips and tricks. You can use that time to observe and ask questions. Notice the tools the stylist uses, watch their patience as they dry and coax each section into place. There really is no magic, no big secret, yet the biggest component is practice. And if you are already blow drying your hair every day, or every other, you are definitely getting practice! My golden rule remains the same no matter what style I am trying to create: TOOLS. TECHNIQUE. PRODUCT. Say it with me now, “TOOLS! TECHNIQUE! PRODUCT!” If you follow these simple guidelines, you will be that much closer to styling your hair like a pro and having it look good all the time. It also provides a great advertising tool for your stylist so he or she should be more than willing to go over their techniques with you.
dryers last much longer, dry hair faster, and leave hair shinier and typically carry a two-year warranty if it does happen to break. Brushes also are a huge part of the equation. Remember, you are blow drying your hair into whichever shape you wrap it around so if you don’t want fluffy hair, don’t use too small of a round brush close to the head. There are stainless round, boar bristle, styling, paddle, vent and smoothing brushes – so many kinds to choose from. Using a big square paddle brush is perfect for brushing out tangles on wet hair. You may also use it to style long straight hair. BUT, if you DO want bounce and curl, that paddle brush won’t do it. A flatwrapping brush is perfect for those flat, side swept bangs that you don’t want to pop up. Boar bristle brushes do an amazing job of smoothing the hair, and making it bouncy and mega shiny. - Continued on Page 37

MAY 2011
Bay Area Burger Guide • Part 1 By Betsey Ennis It's heating up out there! And what goes better with summer fun and sun than some beef and buns? No need to dust off the grill. No need to take out the paper plates or the checkered table cloth. Leave the grilling to the professionals! These eateries work over time year round cooking up some of the tastiest, most creative burgers in the Bay Area. Just kick back with your friends and enjoy some cold ones while the experts prepare a masterpiece you can devour! The best part is getting to savor their offering without having to lift a finger – other than toasting your buddies! Bakkhus Taverna’s Spartan Burger: Lean American Kobe beef patty with caramelized onion, lightly sauteed spinach and cilantro with bacon garlic aioli sauce and topped with fresh grated Greek cheese. (Note that this patty can be ordered as is or sans all the trimmings.) All six burgers on the menu are available with a choice of toasted white or wheat buns and served with their signature Parmesan cheese fries. < SPARTAN BURGER
Zone 504's Caribbean Burger: This Caribbean/BBQ fusion grill has what they claim is Clear Lake's ultimate burger. An Angus burger with grilled pineapple and havarti cheese and fresh locally made, buttered and toasted potato buns. One side is slathered with their homemade chimichurri sauce and the other with their original Three Palms Coral Sauce. Patrons have the option to order them as sliders, too, served with a choice of regular fries, sweet potato fries or a combo of both. Swamp Shack’s Sasquatch Burger: Clear the way for this "monster" triple patty burger! This towering burger combines one Swamp Hog, one Water Moccasin and one Nutria burger with three slices of Cheese (American, Jack and cheddar) piled high with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on a SASQUATCH BURGER fresh bun. This dish is served with your choice of French fries or onion rings. One-and-a-half pounds of beef for $15.95. (Each of Swamp Shack’s burgers are hand made patties mixed with tasty accent flavors: The Swamp Hog patty has bacon; Water Moccasin has medium spice jalapeños mixed in.) - Continued on Next Page
It’s Baaaaack!! (Well, almost, that is!) It’s the biggest news in Burger-dom! Did you hear? Tookie's IS coming back! Hurricane Ike flooded this Seabrook icon with 4 feet of water back in 2008. Days before press, founder Jim Spears sold his legendary burger joint to restaurateur Barry Terrell who started the demolition process days after his coup.
Restauranteur Barry Terrell proudly stands by his latest venture.

Terrell (who also owns Kemah’s T-Bone Tom’s ) gave me a tour. It’s an ambitious plan: Walls are already down; floors will be revamped; the kitchen reinvented; a bar is being added in the rear and the back door will lead to a huge deck under the gigantic tree. As much of the old memorabilia and flavor will be preserved, but most especially, the menu and the recipes will return in tact... Squealers rejoice! – Betsey Ennis

ways looked forward to his schnitzel. “It was his favorite place to eat – here, or McDonald’s,” she laughed. “When his parents brought him back,” Garbo continued, “His eyes lit up; he was so excited.”
It’s been over 20 years since Kristine Garbo smashed a Mexican piggy bank in the middle of her living room floor. After collecting all the nickels, dimes and quarters, she ran to the bank and deposited just under a thousand dollars, opening up an account which would ultimately fund What’s Cookin’ in Kemah. An unfortunate fire took the restaurant in 2005 and devoted patrons have been begging for its return ever since. Today, What’s Cookin’ at the Bistro (a name combining words from her original Kemah restaurant and the Seaside Bistro in Galveston, which was destroyed by Hurricane Ike) is located in a cozy house a few yards away from the original establishment. Antique furniture and knick knacks fill the converted home, giving it a downhome feeling you might get at grandma’s house. Each room is uniquely decorated, creating a distinctive charm at every table. The seating area outside features garden-style patio furniture amidst a wooden bar and fence adorned with decorations. What’s Cookin’ officially opens on May 15 with a party on the patio beginning with a regularly scheduled jazz brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with rotating talent from the likes of Bob Henschen, Horace Grigsby and Clayton Dyess. At 3 p.m. the party kicks off with upbeat live music from Abel and Cindy Thomas, along with hors d'oeuvres and drink specials all day. A silent auction will benefit the effort to bring back the bar – a treasure amongst loyal customers, the bar featured 150 beers. The re-opening of What’s Cookin’ has affected people in many different ways. Garbo told me a story about a 5-year-old boy who al-

Garbo’s Goulash Soup has stood the test of time since its unveiling at an Epicurean Evening in the ’80s. Her bread pudding ousted the San Luis Hotel and Fisherman’s Warf in Galveston in competition. She even won the “Couch Potato” award because her establishment was chosen as a favorite for take-out. Furthering her commitment to the award-winning tradition, Garbo has secured original key staff to move forward with her, including Alberto, her chef of 18 years (and his son, Chico) and Sandie, her general manager.

Award-winning recipes, entirely made from scratch, are what really set this boutique restaurant apart from the rest. In an age where one often finds rehashed versions of classic menu items using lower quality ingredients, Garbo prides herself in having created truly one-of-akind meals.

With lunch and dinner specials on the weekdays, ranging from seafood, veal, steaks and homemade desserts, and brunch on the weekends, there’s never a wrong time to visit What’s Cookin’. Lunch specials vary from day-to-day but are always $6.95. Both lunch and dinner specials will also feature unique drink specials, reflecting the international menu special of the day – if there’s a Mexican food special, for example, Mexican beer would be featured; when it’s Italian, wine is featured; when it’s German, German beer is featured, etc. For her diehard fans, Garbo would like to make sure you’re aware that “Monique” is back and viewable during visiting hours between 2 and 4 p.m., or by appointment. Kristine Garbo’s energy and character shines when she speaks; and cooking for others brings her joy and happiness. Stop in for the amazing food, beer and wine (BYO-Liquor for now) and come visit a former Kemah institution. Chef Arthur Thomas Fantasea Yacht Charters 2551 South Shore Blvd. Suite.C, League City 281-538-9600 • www.thebigwhiteboat.com Specialty: I have no particular specialty because I enjoy cooking all types and regions of food. I have a great passion for working with seafood. There are many flavors that can be derived with seafood. Signature Dish: I really love preparing the simple dish of Chicken Champignon. To me, it is the dish that – when trying to please a group of people – is the one that stands out most neutral to satisfy any- and everyone. It is a tender breast of chicken pounded out and dusted with seasoned flour and pan seared. It is topped with slices of portobello mushrooms with a splash of champagne and fresh garlic, then reduced with heavy whipping cream. It can be served with either a rice pilaf or garlic mashed potatoes and blend of vegetable medley. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Having worked most of my career in Galveston, there were several distinguished guests that have visited the historic Tremont House Hotel. I was also very instrumental in the inauguration of Mardi Gras coming back to Galveston in the early ’90s. I have recently had the honor of gracing the presence of DeMeco Ryans aboard FantaSea Yacht and seemed to really enjoy the cuisine. If I had to sum it all up in a nut shell, my wife (Stephanie) is probably my most famous person that I entertain with food and probably my biggest fan. Please share one special cooking tip or technique for our readers: The biggest tip I can offer anyone after 20-plus years in the hospitality business is to have a passion for making people happy and satisfied, and to truly enjoy what you do. The 10th Annual 24 Hour Film Race occurred the last weekend of April. More than 350 teams from all over the world were challenged to create original short films in just twenty-four hours, based on a theme, prop and action assignment. This year’s theme was “identity theft;” and assigned props ranged from noodles to shaving cream and the assigned actions ranged from stretching to looking The Verdigris: In Search of Will Rogers through a peephole. will be given out at the screening and a The Houston premiere took place at good time will be had by all! Landmark’s River Oaks Theatre just hours prior to press time. Seventeen teams entered the competition in Houston this year and the screening showcased 15 of them. Audience awards have been posted and will be available on the competition’s website at filmracing.com (as of my deadline, the screening had not occurred yet)! This is the third year I’ve produced the event in Houston, and I’m committed to bringing it back year after year. Film Racing gives both fledging and experienced filmmakers the opportunity to create a film and see it on the big screen with fellow filmmakers. It also allows them to figure out just who they can and can’t work with and prepares them for bigger projects. Cultivating independent film in Houston is an important personal goal. Because the film community here is so diversified and spread out, it’s important to support events that put filmmakers first and give a platform for creativity. A gala screening for Texas Film Racers will be presented at the historic Texas Theatre on May 31. Built in 1931 by Howard Hughes and the location where Lee Harvey Oswald was captured, filmmakers and the public are encouraged to come out and tour the facility before the screenings at 7PM. Audience awards
Winners of the Houston Film Race will be posted in mid-June. The “Best Film of Houston” will receive a $300 grip and electric credit at Texcam and will advance to the second round of judging. The team who wins “Best Film” overall, takes home $4,000 in cash this year. Best of luck to the filmmakers and thanks for participating! Aviation Cinemas Kickstarts “The Verdigris: In Search of Will Rogers” The Aviation Cinemas team and Texas Theatre are excited to have Beau Jennings’ “The Verdigris: In Search of Will Rogers” as the first official project launch through the theater’s latest production arm. The first of many projects to come, Aviation Cinemas believes grassroots fundraising is an integral part of the filmmaking process and a great way to get lesser known projects out to the public. “The Verdigris” documentary follows folk musician Beau Jennings through various important locations of Will Rogers’ life, including his birthplace in Oklahoma, the theater where he performed in New York, his home in New Orleans and eventually the place of his death in Alaska. A songwriter from Oklahoma, Beau has spent the last few years writing songs about his boyhood hero and “Oklahoma’s favorite son” Will Rogers, the legendary Cherokee-Indian cowboy, vaudeville performer, newspaper columnist and movie

GULF COAST FILM & VIDEO ARTS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES CALL FOR ENTRIES Award Winning Actress Marsha Mason to Appear By Domino Taylor
Annually, this festival has celebrities in the film and video industries who are guest speakers and presenters and is a not-for-profit film festival. Founding Director Hal Wixon, an actor himself, had a mission to encourage the work of independent filmmakers and a place to put budding filmmakers in the spotlight.
The Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival are calling for entries of films, videos and screenplays for the upcoming festival, September 23-25. The deadline for the film and screenplay submission is May 30, and the late submission date is June 24 with a small late fee. Film genres include Action, Drama, Comedy, Horror, Music, Documentary, Animation, Foreign, Art -Experimental and Student Project from school. Categories are; Feature (not over 90 minutes), Short (under 15 minutes) and Standard (15-35 minutes). Short works is a $30 entry fee; Standard works is a $45 fee; and Feature length is an $85 fee.
“This festival was created to Four-time Academy Award nominee showcase the discovery of for Best Actress Marsha Mason new and emerging artists. The goals for this fun and educational event are to encourage the works of independent filmmakers and promote the concept of art, as well as offering awards as means of educational outreach and expand the awareness of independent film,” stated Wixon.
Screenplay entries must be unpublished, single-sided bound with 2-3 brads. The categories are Short (under 60 pages) and Standard (minimum 70 pages to maximum 130 pages). Short work entry fee is $35 and Standard is $50 entry fee. More details with the registration forms and the mailing address are on the film festival website, www.gulfcoastfilmfest.com. The Gulf Coast Film Festival recently announced that actress Marsha Mason, a four-time Academy Award nominee for Best Actress, will recieve the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Mason’s works include Cinderella Liberty, The Goodbye Girl, Only When I Laugh and Heartbreak Ridge. She will be scheduled to appear during the weekend event and to receive her award at the September 24 Gala and Awards Banquet at South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center.
Filmmakers from all over the word have submitted their films in the past decade. The festival also showcases Bay Area Houston as a location for future films. The City of Kemah is the title sponsor. Ticket packages are available on online and sponsorships are still available. Stay tuned to upcoming issues of The SCENE magazine for developing news and details on new activities and forums with the annual Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival. For any additional information and film entry forms, log on to www.gulfcoastfilmfest.com or call 281-333-5804. That’s a wrap!
The kick off reception will be September 23 at Madeline’s Wine Bistro in Kemah and the two-day film screenings will be at Holiday Inn Kemah.
Film Column • Continued from Page 23 Beau decided that the performances should be captured on video for the creation of a feature-length documentary film and accompanying album with the working title The Verdigris – a reference to the river that runs through Will’s hometown of Oologah, OK, and then through Beau’s hometown of Inola, OK. Beau has written an album of songs inspired by these locations and the crew will follow him and his bandmates as they record the songs at each location. “’The Verdigris’ is something that has become very special to me – its named for the river that runs through both my hometown and Will’s – and I hope it can become something special to others, too. I think everyone knows Will as Oklahoma’s favorite son, but I think he also has faded into the past a bit, reduced to a few memorable quotes.” Said Jennings. “Hopefully with this film we can rediscover what made Will Rogers so cool. I’m asking anyone and everyone who is interested to come to a show, watch the trailer screening, hear us play some songs, and donate whatever you can to help us make this project a reality.”
THE SCENE
Coinciding with the first date of the fundraising tour, Beau and the rest of the Aviation Cinemas team launched an online Kickstarter page, through which all donated money is to be funneled – supporters were able to donate through this webpage or directly at the shows. “We (the Aviation Cinemas team) The Verdigris: In worked on Clay Liford’s “WUSS” together Search of Will Rogers in 2010 and decided that we wanted to start making film production a regular part of our mission” said Eric Steele, Partner at Aviation Cinemas. “So often great ideas – stories that could make great independent films – aren’t ever realized because filmmakers can’t find funding or support. This is our way of starting a grassroots movement through the Texas Theatre to see that some of those projects can be made.” For more information on “The Verdigris” and how to donate, visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/theverdigris.

TEXAS EQUUSEARCH SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA
The Texas EquuSearch Sports Extravaganza was held last month at Campbell Hall in Pasadena and raised roughly $220,000 for the organization dedicated to the search and recovery of lost and missing persons Special guest Ed Reed, a seven-time NFL Pro-Bowler with the Baltimore Ravens, gave an emotional speech about his experience with EquuSearch after his brother, Bryan Reed, went missing in the Mississippi River. He broke down in front of the audience as he was expressing his gratitude toward Tim Miller, the founder of EquuSearch. Brittany Shantz, daughter of Douglas Shantz, explained the huge impact Miller and Texas EquuSearch had for her and her family after her father’s body was recovered. She never imagined that her father wouldn’t be there for her college graduation, but Texas EquuSearch helped offer closure. One of the highlights of the night was when Miller brought a smiling and waving 3year-old Owen Castle on stage after Miller relayed the story of finding him in 27 degree weather, close to death, after he went missing in December 2009. Texas EquuSearch currently has over 1,200 members serving as volunteers. Miller founded Texas EquuSearch after his daughter Laura Miller was abducted and murdered in north Galveston County in 1984. The non-profit organization is supported solely by donations and still needs pledges for a piece of sonar equipment as well as gas cards for searchers. Clear Lake Program introduces teens to safe boating practices The thirteenth annual W.A.D.E. (Water Activities Day Event) Program for teens, hosted by the Houston Safe Boating Council and the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held at Clear Lake Park on NASA Parkway in June and July. This program offers teens ages 13 and up, three days of in-the-water, hands-on training in the operation of powerboats, sailboats, kayaks and PWCs. They receive classroom instruction in handling procedures, Texas boating laws and boating courtesy. A written and skills test is given at the end of each session, and upon course completion students receive their Texas Boater Basic Certification by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Division. The two sessions, held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, are scheduled for June 13-15 and July 11-13. Each session is limited to 36 students and a registration fee of $125 per student is required. Scholarships are also available. Space is limited, reserve your spot today. Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty.
Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

On the Water Sea Lake Yacht Sales Shoe Regatta slated for May 21 & 22 Lakewood Yacht Club Race Committee Chairman Dwight Bengtson recently announced that the Sea Lake Yacht Sales Shoe Regatta will be held over the weekend of May 21 & 22. In 1982, Lakewood hosted the first Shoe Regatta, and now the club is the organizing authority. Bay Access, a not for profit organization that supports amateur racing, is the host. The Regatta, which is open to the public, is a favorite among local racers because each crew member of the winning boat in each class is awarded a West Marine gift card. The Shoe Regatta is for one-design, handicapped, and cruising sailboats over 20 feet in length and with a cabin. There will be three race courses set on Galveston Bay: a windward/leeward course for the One Design classes; a windward/leeward course for handicap rated boats; and a third triangular course to provide a long race for handicap rated spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats. PHRF Certificates are not required for Cruisers. The Skippers Meeting will be held on Fri., May 20, 7:30 pm

The Saturday evening party will have live entertainment, food, and beverages. The awards ceremony will follow the last race on Sun., May 22, and will be held in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club. The Hairem Salon is celebrating 13 years in the business as well as the success of their stylists on Friday, May 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. The celebration has been dubbed the “Beauty Bar” event. This customer appreciation party will feature a brag wall with various promotional materials boasting projects the stylists have participated in. There will be a live DJ spinning tunes, make up artists and amazing cocktails provided by Railean Rum and Agave! Unzipped Denim Bar will be there with great clothing and accessories; Scentsy Candles will also have a presence during the event. “You won’t want to miss this once in a lifetime party!” said owner Heaven Padgett. “We will be offering fabulous specials on

HAIREM SALON HOSTS BEAUTY BAR EVENT
all our make up and hair products as well as appointment booking specials.” The event is open to the public. As with any Hairem event, expect lots of door prizes and goodies, drinks and tasty hors d'oeuvres. The Hairem Salon is located at 18096 Kings Row Suite A (two blocks east of Putt Putt on NASA Road One). Padgett insisted, “Please come out and enjoy the evening with us as we thank YOU for all of your loyalty to our salon.” to use a lot of product in my hair.” First off, the hair will be subject to its growth pattern and texture without the use of product. Second, today’s products protect the hair from the elements, have sunscreens and conditioning agents that keep it from getting dry and losing its luster.
TECHNIQUE: Don’t work to your detriment. Even using the right tool, but with the wrong technique can work against the progress you are trying to make. For example, if you want to diffuse curly hair so that the curl is uniform, shiny and defrizzed, you need to apply product in large sections and then comb through with a large tooth comb IN THE direction you would like it to dry. Often I see clients struggle while blow drying the front of the hair. Just simple instruction on what angle to hold the brush can make a huge impact on the overall style. If you are using a curling iron, make sure you are curling the hair in the right direction. If you want the hair to flow towards the face, you must curl it that way. If you hold the iron improperly you can get kinks in the hair. When using a flat iron, avoid taking sections of hair that are deeper and wider than the size of your iron--this could also cause lines in the hair. There are definitely methods to the madness that your stylist can share to give you a salon look every day! PRODUCT: While the tools are the producers of the movie, and the technique is the script the product is truly the star of the show! Every product you use has an intended use and purpose. Different types of looks require different products. In the salon, every product I pick up and use on a client has a mantra: “What am I using? Why am I using it? How do I use it?” For example: What am I using? Silkening Oil Treatment. Why am I using it? To blow out the hair soft and silky smooth while increasing the drying time by up to 44%. How do I use it? Apply into palm of hand in 1 ml pump increments. Emulsify by rubbing palms together and disperse through the hair evenly from roots to ends. If you want your hair to be full and bouncy you MUST use product! I often hear, “I don’t like

Big Ben Tavern: Continued from Page 49 Rumor has it, this block is on its way to being an entertainment destination. According to owner, Oneil Kurup, “everything is big at Big Ben. We feel at home in the Clear Lake Area… and we’re looking to expand.” Presently, live music occurs several times a month, with acoustic tunes every Tuesday. In the near future, look out for karaoke on Wednesdays, parking lot parties and car washes on Sundays. Also look out for the Swimsuit International USA competition to be hosted at Big Ben – the winner will rep the tavern in Vegas at the final competition. With events like the tavern’s grand opening in March and recent crawfish boil, Big Ben is quickly becoming a favorite spot for locals and Houstonians alike. Big Ben Tavern is located at 20237 Gulf Freeway. Their phone number is 281-332-9820 – call in to order food to-go or make a reservation for a large party. Big Ben is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Find them on Facebook to get the skinny on all the specials and events gong on.

BIG RICHARD ROCKS HARD ALL NIGHT!!! That’s their slogan you know… Well, now you know if you didn’t already… Surely you have seen Big Richard out and about in The SCENE Magazine area and beyond, right? In March alone, the band performed live like every other night! Every Tuesday night at Union Tavern… I caught them out at Sherlock’s Baker Street Pub (Clear Lake) last month and Big Richard’s performance was very fresh and a lot of fun to watch. Drummer Charlie Carlisle means it when he says, “We like to play a variety of music to try and get everyone in the crowd involved. We don't want to leave anyone out of the party.” I do believe him. The band performs only covers and only those covers in which they “enjoy playing, what crowds like to hear, and what is a good fit for each singer’s vocal range.” Big Richard has been a band since November 2009 and the current lineup has been in place since the first day of 2011. The members are Will Wadkins (guitar, vocals), Travis Comer (lead Guitar, vocals), George Thomas III (a.k.a. G3 and bass guitar, harmonies, sound, lights), Dewayne Gaspard (keys, percussion, vocals) and Charlie Carlisle (drums and he says “wackiness,” but I say “instigator.”) Who would have thought the statement “Tell me about the band” would go so horribly (yet strangely entertaining) off

track? By the way, the information is all according to Charlie. (That’s Charlie Carlisle, not Charlie Sheen.) Here we go. Remember, I ask the hard questions for you... “About the band? My favorite cereal is Fruity Pebbles, and I am not sure about the rest of the guys. Will thinks fart jokes are the funniest thing. Travis loves to shred his guitar to "butt-rock" music. G3 is seriously silly and has two clones. Dewayne is a cross between Flavor Flave, Tommy Lee and Mike D.” Awesome to know! Now, what can you tell me about the band’s unique name?
tle Richard” was already taken and “Medium Richard” just sounds funny.” Well, Big Richard has a BIG personality, a BIG sound, and a BIG following! Catch the fellas at Union Tavern every Tuesday in May; or find them on Facebook as “BigRichardRocks.” For booking information, email Charlie@thecrisis.net. Sidenote: Carlisle also plays in three original bands (The Crisis, Faceplant and CB Kings.) George Thomas III AKA G3 also plays with Faceplant. Comer had an original band called Last Hour when he lived in North Carolina and Big Richard will soon be backing him up on that project. - Rhonda Meredith

TEXAS EQUUSEARCH SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA : I confess... I knew little about this group (texasequusearch.org) and what they did, but many of you out there know already. We arrived and spotted the band, Thrill Kill and the Real Deal. We only see this great bunch of guys and their entourage at charity fundraiser events, so I knew right away this was a good mojo event. The place was HUGE and PACKED with supporters and volunteers galore. The musicians I spotted in the crowd alternative bass rocker Rene Coppock, Clear Lake jazzman Abel Salazar and North American singer songwriter Zach Tate and the crowd just as varied. Master of Ceremonies were provided by Dave Ward of ABC 13. One guest speaker was NFL Defensive Player of the Year Ed Reed of the Baltimore Ravens. Pretty spiffy, eh? Ed provided a solid delivery of what Equusearch meant to him with the integrity that only a seven-time Pro Bowler and beloved family member could provide. I got it... Many of you there already had it... Let's all get it...
KOPEK: Continued from Page 60 Let’s look at KOPEK a little deeper – or in another way... They are touring in a black Sprinter van with their tour manager Jay and session guitarist Luke a/k/a “He-man” and one of the activities they do in their spare time is watch movies. A question I posed to the band was “Is KOPEK a comedy or drama out on the road?” At first the answer was “a combination of both” but then Cooney smiles and says “Horror.” It was joke though. Before they sat down to talk with me, the band had been chilling in the van watching the DVD of Mel Gibson’s “Signs.” We laughed about the line “Swing, Merrill, swing!” and the foil hats that were worn in the show. But all kidding aside; there isn’t that much free time right now. KOPEK is working really hard to build their fan base in the U.S. The lads believe in the music. When KOPEK won the “big” battle of the bands, the winnings were basically just reinvested into the band minus a few purchases. They are not frivolous and have an appreciation for hard-earned money. It wasn’t that long ago they held 9-to-5 jobs. “We have held almost every job under the sun,” Shane said with Brad and Daniel nodding in agreement. A greenhouse assistant was one job. It’s the honest living, their environment, any government and the people they know that provide meaningful lyrics to the songs.

------------------------------------------------TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE: There were plenty of shows to choose from this month and we along with folks from Katy, Cypress, The Woodlands, and Mexico decided on a Tuesday to checkout Sevendust with opening local acts Fallen Grey, Chrome 44, and 94.5FM Buzz Texas Music Band of the Year From Guts To Glory. Many felt Sevendust's show at last summer's BuzzFest Weenie Roast was cut a bit short. This night, they more than made up for it and were every bit as loud. I was at both shows, so I know. And *that* folks is Tour Stop Clear Lake. (Publisher's Note: Just hours before the last section of this issue went to press, Andy Eng covered national recording artist Red {pictured at left} at Scout Bar.) “White Collar Lies” makes a political statement. “Sin City” laments the human nature. “Love Is Dead” is about love in an abstract way. It’s when you are angry that things you love are literally gone or taken away or have changed beyond recognition. But what I recognized when I first heard KOPEK was that they are a band to watch on the rise. And that’s exactly what the concert goers’ learned that night after seeing the it all come alive raw onstage. The band knows I was going to mention the movie “P.S. I Love You” in the title of the article. I told them it would raise their female fan base by at least 50 percent. Ladies, they are sweethearts, so you have to check out KOPEK at www.kopekofficial.com or on Facebook. Guys, they have a ’70s Hendrix and Led Zepplin vibe about them that you are going to want to jam out to as well!

Fun and Talented… Meet Obsolete August For 11 years now, Obsolete August has been a musical staple in the area’s entertainment scene. The original lineup included brothers Kevin and Nathan Holmes. Kevin says the band’s name “was something we came up with when we were 17 years old. A friend that was in the band at the time was supposed to leave for school in August. He decided to ditch college to pursue his dream of becoming a musician. He ended up quitting two weeks later, but the name stuck anyhow.” And while the name never changed, the lineup did repeatedly. “Many musicians have used Obsolete August as a stepping stone in their careers, and still join us when they can,” Holmes says. Currently, you will see him onstage alongside Daniel Lopez, Darren Holub and Justin Roelant.
extremely talented and the way the music flows so naturally between them is pretty cool. So grab The SCENE Magazine each month and check out where Obsolete August will be performing. They are all over the area as well as every Thursday night at Scout Bar and every Sunday evening at Dempsey’s. Saturday, June 25, catch them at Union Tavern. The best way to get a hold of the band for more information (including booking) is to email Kevin Holmes at kmh1812@yahoo.com. - Rhonda Meredith
Lopez, Holub, and Roelant are accomplished musicians as well and juggle multiple musical projects. “I have known Kevin and Darren (Holub) for about eight years or so now, but never officially played under the Obsolete August name until February of last year,” said Lopez. “A lot of the music we play is very free form with room for expression.” “Obsolete August is billed as a cover show,” Holmes said. “But each member has his own original songs as well, ranging from country to reggae to rock.” I caught up with the band at Union Tavern and think they put on a show that’s fun to watch as each member is

Since its inception last November, CABO has become a premier place to unwind, let loose, and just have a good time any day or night of the week. The crowd that assembles at this waterfront venue knows how to have some fun. Have you ever seen a giant Jenga set? Or ordered a “Jeremiah Weed” drink? CABO is an adult playground with awesome drink deals. Typically, the drink deals are going to go hand in hand with the kitchen specials. For example, on “2sday,” the special is $2 Jagers and $2 domestic bottles. The “Jeremiah Weed” drink is only $2 on Wednesdays along with 35 cent wings, $14 beer bongs, and Bada Bingo. On Thursday nights it’s your choice of either a Rib Eye or NY Strip (with a baked potato and salad) for just 10 bucks and $2 pints all night long. The “pub grub” is very tasty at CABO. You have multiple choices ranging from burgers, sandwiches and finger foods. It’s all restaurant quality. Oh yeah, every Sunday is crawfish (during the season). While the drink deals and food specials are enough of a reason to visit CABO and get you through the door, you are going to want to stay because of the positive vibe both inside and outdoors. Inside CABO is spacious. You walk in and are greeted by their professional staff. The atmosphere immediately draws you into camaraderie with other like-minded folks. You want to dance? Well, welcome to the dance floor... Come closer... The sound system is awesome. The lights will take your moves to the next level as you dance to the hot tunes of the DJ on Friday nights or groove to the area’s top local bands performing live on the ample stage every Saturday night. Acoustic sets are featured frequently during the week including the A.W.O.L happy hour. Don’t want to strut what your momma gave you? No problem because there is

something for everyone at CABO. Big screen TVs carry the latest sports action all over the walls and you can sit and chill while drinking a cold one...or two. And for those who are of a competitive spirit, CABO has you covered with pool tables, darts, ping pong table, electronic games, and a huge shuffleboard game near the rear doors. Speaking of back doors, CABO has a cool waterfront deck with abundant outdoor seating. It’s a beautiful sight watching boating activity, the sun setting while feeling a breeze on your face. Take it all in while playing a friendly game of ring toss or work it with a hula hoop. (You know you want to!) The giant Jenga game is located out on the deck, too. Of course, you won’t have to walk far to get a drink. The outside bar is ready to serve you a libation of your choice. The tropical atmosphere lends itself well to the overall beachy vibe of Seabrook. CABO hosts multiple bikini contests. Mark your calendar now, on June 25, CABO will host the finals. Check out the grand opening of the CABO Beach Bar. It’s an “under bar” with sand “carpeting” and another perfect spot to hang out by the water or play pool on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. That’s “pool” as in “pool table” and not “swimming pool.” The CABO Beach Bar will be rockin’ out to live music all three days. Get a smile on your face now because the summertime party season is about to be in full swing at CABO! CABO is located at 2513 Nasa Parkway. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2am. For more information, call 281-532-2691. EL LAGO'S 50TH YEAR CELEBRATION: Complete with dignitaries, plenty of green grass, beautiful weather, cold beer and BBQ, this celebration was probably how all city celebrations were meant to be. Congrats to Mayor Brad Emel and the citizens for a great 50 years with many more to come. Houston might not have gotten what it wanted, but got what it needed from the core members of the Fab 40. Sounds familiar? They're the all-volunteer group complete with orchestra and put on over-the-top free shows for the entire city of Houston. Drum roll please.... We got an inside scoop that the next Fab 40 show at Discovery Green on May 28th will feature their popular Abbey Road performance. This was a burner before, and on our calendar already. Onward...
JASON DANFORD BASH (Big Ben Tavern): The SCENE was at this monster event last year along with over 400 of Jason's closest friends and family and over two tons of street fighting mudbugs. We jumped when we heard about this year's event complete with UFC PPV. Tell you what though, Obsolete August with Erik Garza went waaaay over the top stirring up the cayenne on the patio while Rich and Sheri took care of everybody with the cayenne in the pot. If anybody paid attention to who won, let us know. Get the gist? We are often asked and here goes... We calibrate our cayenne taste buds using the out-of-body offerings of Frank & Sam's for which Zone 504 and Jason's/Big Ben's scored closest this season. If you disagree, come see me out on The SCENE. Back to the music...
KEMAH CRAWFISH FESTIVAL: Wow! This inaugural event went the pro route and maxed out on several fronts. On the live music scene, kudos to Alan Stephenson and team for lining up one of the best sounding and lighted events (cameras need lights) we've attended. Folks took in ethnic Andean Led Zeppelin woodwinds, some Texas Voodoo Blues from Richard Cagle & The Voodoo Choir, and perhaps the brightest most interesting act of the month from northwest Houston, The Scars Heal In Time (we'll skip the acronym for now). A technically all-together group of gals ranging from ages 12 to 15, these rocksters successfully fused the likes of Joan Jett to Chris Isaak in total dynamics, clarity, power, and passion -- All within the same song! I must admit lifting my jaw up off the ground and looking out in the audience, many of you were too. So there. Further inland, we swung by Kemah's long running Blessing of the Fleet. FOLLOW UP: Last month we mentioned the Inaugural Mean Gene Kelton Music Festival to support his favorite charities at the Hawg Stop Amphitheater. I highly recommend this cool place to decompress on a Sunday afternoon if you need to get away. We took in Rory Jagdeo, Rob Austin and Dave Lopez, JB Bullion Band, & The Professor Blues Allstars before moving on. We also took the opportunity to get to know better Mean Gene's favorite charities Harley's Angels, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital Memphis, and Houston Blues Museum. Keep these groups in you plans if your can. One of the Kelton's favorite charities wasn't there because they were putting on an event of their own....

Clear Lake Crawfish Festival @ Clear Lake Park
LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 58 TO THE CLEAR LAKE CRAWFISH FESTIVAL: I'll have to double check but I *think* this is the area's longest running festival of it's kind. A drove of you SCENE readers were relaxing under the shady pavilion enjoying Andy & The Dreamsicles with guitar wizard James Reese on the axe. This might be the furthest west I've seen the Dreamsicles play. It was a good thing for Clear Lake. Even further west....

sense... Hey, New Band Alert!!! Funksion at the 2011 We caught a new area band, at Floyd’s Parking Lot Party More Floyd’s party photos on page 48 Floyd's calling themselves The Remedy, and I’m really hip with these guys. They slant toward all age alternative rock covers that everybody jumps to and are not often heard live locally. We declare The Remedy a SCENE ready party band. Before resuming our crawfish festival trek, we made a quick side visit and joined... - Continued on Page 53

I say ROYAL WEDDING, Brooke says… Fantasy and romance. (She is a believer in true love.)
Right now, who are you listening to in the car or IPod? Katy Perry - but she loves all music. Can’t imagine life without it. Motto to Live By – The Golden Rule Small town or big city? The Dickinson native is emphatic on this answer – Small town! Football? Baseball? Basketball? Dallas Cowboys!! I love football and wished the Cowboys would’ve been in the last Super Bowl.

IDR @ Scout Bar
Loose Notes by Andy Eng Before we jump in, a quick overview... If you missed them last month, it might be a while before Skyrocket ('perhaps the most wickedly original party band to emerge from any music scene) will be back at Scout Bar. Seems like they're getting booked at a bunch of private parties but that makes From sense. We celebrated Scout Bar's 7th Anniversary with Guts To Glory I.D.R., Saturate and The Hunger rocking on strong @ Scout Bar when experts inside the loop said it couldn't be done. Well done! The Cock-Eyed Seagull packed them inside, onto the patio, and in all night at the annual ‘60s Party with Hourglass. We also took in The Tail Draggers and their new playlist of cool songs from “outer space” along with the Guacamole Gods -- An interesting blend of Cisco and Coach Raggio that has been brewing at Katie's for some time. Jackie's Brickhouse lineups continue to be ever refreshing Hourglass @ Cockeyed Seagull as their remodeling with a first time appearance of Ray Parcee & The All Stars - A night of solid nonstop old Ray Parcee & All Stars school Motown funk. And just @ Jackie’s Brickhouse to remind us that spring is here, we had a pleasant visit with regular SCENE readers all the way from Kingwood who came down just to hang out on Jackie's patio. Pretty cool, eh? :-) David Watson and DeWayne Skipper aka "D2" were playing forth their good vibe arrangements of acoustic crowd pleasers -- It's always good catching these two. Summer's tomorrow, but spring is now, so on to the festivals we go... D2 @ Jackie’s Brickhouse

Live Music Review
P.S. I LOVE YOU,
KOPEK
By Rhonda Meredith The closest I had ever come to an Irish musician was about four feet… I remember the event well… The distance between me and my TV set was four feet and I was watching the chick flick P.S. I LOVE YOU on some cable channel. Yes, I was sitting close and it was bad for my eyes, but the Irish musician was really talented and, ok, I admit he was pretty cute too.
Melovine (w/Euphilia, A Digital Death & The Last Place You Look)
Friday, May 13 UNION TAVERN
But that was then and this is now. My new “distance” record is now less about a foot from, not one, but THREE Irish musicians from a rock band named KOPEK. The “lads” that make up KOPEK are Daniel Jordan (vocals, guitar), Brad Kinsella (bass) and Shane Cooney (drums.) What was going to be a short standard interview prior to the show ended up being so much better. These guys are real. They are funny. The bond between them is very evident. They talk amongst themselves, over themselves and all the while just chatting away and savoring every moment. Each band member had his own individual thoughts, but collectively they were on the same page. When I mentioned “Texas”, the answer was “It’s hot!” followed up with “But we love Texas!” in unison.
Symphony X Saturday, May 14 SCOUT BAR
Speaking of Texas, KOPEK was at Houston’s Scout Bar supporting COLD’s “SuperFiction” tour. It was KOPEK’s first time in Houston and their second official U.S. tour. The lads’ first U.S. tour had them sharing the stage with Hinder.
Mama Tried (& The Drive) Saturday, May 28
Here are the basics: KOPEK is a three-piece band from Dublin, they won a Battle of The Band’s contest in 2005 in which the purse was a cool $100,000. Brad and Shane were neighbors and Daniel answered their want ad for a singer. “Kopek” is indeed Russian currency but that’s not the meaning behind the name.
ZONE 504
The actual “meaning” is something like this, “We wanted a name that when someone says that name, they will immediately think of a kick ass rock band and that band would be US!” KOPEK’s debut CD is called “White Collar Lies”, but to generalize it as being a political record would limit your intelligence...and the songs. - Continued on Page 46
