IT’S ALL “CRAZY GOOD” at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack! By Rhonda Meredith Most people would be intimidated by snakes and gators, but not Boudreaux as you can tell by this month’s cover. Nope. Boudreaux says it’s more the merrier…especially when it comes to supplying the fresh crawfish being served up at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in Kemah. These Cajuns sure are crazy about those “mudbuggs.” The season has begun! The Swamp Shack’s boiling pot has runneth over with crawfish, as well as shrimp, lobsters and swamp spiders. (The latter is “crabs” for you non-Cajuns.) Start your meal off with a “Swamp Snack.” Salads are offered, but to truly channel your inner Cajun, it would be best to order another appetizer like the “Swamp Shack Sampler” and taste some of Crazy Alan’s favorite starters. The “Smoked Oyster Swamp Shack” is a favorite among customers, too. The Swamp Shack’s reasonably priced “Da’ Main Korse” dinner menu features many great food choices: jambalaya with “anduuwee” sausage, shrimp, chicken, catfish, rib eye steak, alligator and more. Did I mention that 95 percent of the food is made from scratch? Well, now you know... “The food specials are plentiful at the Swamp Shack,” says Laurie Holze, a Swamp Shack manager. “We’ve got the Trout Medallion and Stuffed Steak specials. The Crab Bisque is awesome, too!” The Crab Bisque is technically not on the menu. This is just one
of those things that The SCENE Magazine readers have the inside information on. Thank you, Laurie! The Swamp Shack features regular specials throughout the week, too. The $3.99-per-pound crawfish special is Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. On Mondays and Wednesdays, the special is extended until 9 p.m. Two specials are served up on Tuesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.! It’s your choice: 35-cent fresh oysters or the jumbo snow crab “clusters” for $4.99 each. It’s a tough call, I know. Not all snakes should be feared, especially the large non-venomous snakes who are born and raised in captivity. In her spare time: She loves to curl up with her best bud Bob (a male Albino Burmese Python) Fun Facts: Bindi lays eggs once a year – anywhere from 60 to 70 eggs at a time. She has 200 teeth that are 1.5 inches long. She has four rows of teeth on top and two rows of teeth on bottom. A word to the wise: A python is like any other pet. If they are not handled regularly, they can become scared and aggressive toward humans. Bindi, on the other hand, is a very affectionate snake. A special thanks to her handler Peter Piontkowski who works along side the east Texas Herpetological Society.
The staff offers wonderful customer service and owners Paul Latour and Alan Franks want to make sure your experience is an enjoyable one. So does the Cayman alligator up front. Make sure you stop by and tell him hello. There is a lot of scurrying going on at the Swamp Shack as they have began preparations for Spring Break and the summer months that are fast approaching. In fact, the live music starts back up in on weekends in February. In, March, the live music performances will extend to Wednesday – Sunday. 2012 Printmaking & Art Furniture Exhibition By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor A unique new art exhibit, 2012 Printmaking & Art Furniture Exhibition, will open February 9 and will run until March 15 at The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (TAACCL). The show will feature original work from local artists, printmakers, furniture makers, woodworkers and designers. If you haven’t been to an art exhibit in while, this should be the one to get you to TAACCL to view the featured woodwork and furniture as art. Featured Artist: Robin Stone
Capturing the Local Cu lture on Canvas By Kelley Dawson
Robin Stone Collins can’t remember a time when she wasn’t painting. A resident of Kemah for more than 20 years, Robin creates captivating water-media paintings of the local Bay Area. She joked that much of her creativity was a result of her mother refusing to buy her coloring books as a kid. Robin’s mom insisted that if Robin wanted to color a tree or a house, she could just draw it herself. Robin believes that artistic talent is inherent as well. Robin’s talent garnered her a full art scholarship to San Jacinto Junior College. Robin then attended the University of Houston and the Art Institute of Houston. With her art design and visual communication degrees, she started Stone Studio Graphics, Inc. Her graphics studio designed logos for large and small companies including Miller Brewing, Marriot Hotels, Jim Beam, CocaCola, and the Boys & Girls Harbor. Robin says she is most proud of her involvement in the lengthy focus group concept process to decide and design the Houston Texan’s football team logo. Her work with football didn’t start there, however. Robin, a former Houston Oiler’s Derrick Doll cheerleader, put her artistic vision in a wearable form by designing uniforms for the Derrick Dolls. Like a cheerleader pumping up the stadium crowd, Robin’s enthusiasm regarding the thinking and creative process is contagious. She is intrigued with “starting with nothing, branding a product and ending with something everlasting.”
ingself. In fact, Robin paints by actually painting the subject matter upside down onto the canvas. This unusual painting style changes her perception and “keeps it fresh.” Robin explained, “Your brain tricks you a lot. You don’t want your brain to tell you what to paint. You want to paint what you see.” Her goal is to paint what “should be there” in terms of colors, shapes and textures. A self-described “water-media artist,” Robin paints mostly tropical settings, boats and sea life with all water-based materials such as water colors, acrylics and Casein. The realistic detail and depth of her paintings are reminiscent of altered photographs. The seascapes are just as uplifting as looking out over the Bay on a gorgeous, sunny afternoon. Much like watching the ebb and flow of the tide, the paintings seem to mesmerize. “I am continuously inspired by the beauty of our natural environment,” Robin said. “A perfect world (for me) would be to paint all the time.” Robin’s works have been on display at several local art shows and school alumni events. Recently, she won second place at both the 2011 Keels and Wheels Art Show and the 2011 Hotel Galvez Art Show. Robin keeps her community life a mixed media of sorts as a member of the Kemah City Council and the Mayor Pro Tem. She also volunteers her time and artistic talents for numerous organizations such CCISD and College of the Mainland. Coincidentally, Robin chaired The Art Alliance Center of Clear Lake’s 2011 fall fundraiser which featured The SCENE Magazine’s December 2011 spotlight artist and CCISD alum, Caycee Black.

“ROCK’N WISHES” A ‘RECORD’ SUCCESS The Bay Area Chi Omega Alumnae Chapter hosted its 6th Annual Wine & Wishes on January 19 at Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille. The community supported MakeA-Wish® Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana Chapter generating their most successful year. The culinary adventure raised $88,059 to grant 14 children’s wishes from the Bay Area area. Four of the fulfilled wishes are Angelina, Julia, Cooper and Nicole to go to Walt Disney World Resort®.

The emcee Phil Pampolina, started the evening and CoChairs Holly Perry and Wendy Shaw announced the presence of parents and grandparents of Abby O, whose wish was granted five years ago through “Wine & Wishes” 2007. There was an energetic atmosphere – from the rock’n western band, Southbounders, to the attendees who were adorned with fringe, cowboy hats and boots! The guests were served a scrumptious five-course wine dinner and enjoyed a wine raffle, big board, silent and live auction by Auctioneer Mark Lovfald!

PART 1: CLEAR LAKE & KREWE DU LAC Celebrate all throughout Mardi Gras month with a bang and an "Arrrgh!" with everyone's favorite party pirates, Kemah's Krewe du Lac. The grand kickoff event begins Friday, February 3rd, with the Royal Ball aboard the Spirit of Texas Paddlewheeler, and the parties continue for three weeks leading up to the Mardi Gras parade in Galveston, where the crazy Krewe will view the festivities from a balcony on the Strand. Join the haunted Rum Runner Ghost Tour in Kemah for some spooky evening fun the day after the ball, then gear up for the Krewes into Kemah Kick Off Party at Bakkhus Taverna on February 10th. Work off some king cake calories for a good cause at the Galloway Fun Run on the Kemah Boardwalk the next morning, then kick back and watch the parade through Kemah later that morning. After the parade, celebrate with the Krewe at T-Bone Tom's with live music by Jerry Diaz, costume contest, raffle benefiting Spina Bifida kids camp and much more. Later that night, attend the first ever Krewe du Lac masquerade party at Zone 504 with famous zydeco band Jabo and the Southside Playboys. Finish up a great weekend at Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack Mardi Gras party with crawfish and live music. On February 18, join Krewe du Lac aboard the luxury yacht, The FantaSea and be part of the annual Yachty Gras Boat Parade. Travel along the Kemah channel and world famous Kemah Boardwalk, boarding at 6:30pm. Friday, Feb. 3 – Royal Ball aboard Spirit of Texas Paddlewheeler - Departs Endeavour Marina at 8pm. Cocktail attire (Men- Jacket required, tie optional) Classy Pirate attire is always acceptable. Pre-boarding social at Sam’s Boat in front of the marina from 7 to 8 pm. Presentation of the Court, live music, dancing, light appetizers, adult beverages. 2.5 hour cruise around Clear Lake. Cost $50 per person. Must be at least 21. Saturday, Feb. 4 – Kemah Ghost Tour – Rum Runners! Meet at Zone 504 at 6:30 pm, travel to the light house on the Bay, then to Wine Down (previously Madeline’s Wine Bistro), stop by Tequila Mia’s, and end at Amadeus for dancing. Enjoy plenty of ghost stories and history during this exciting and fun ghost walk. Don’t miss this adventure! Cost $20 per person plus beverages. 21 and over only, please.
Krewes Into Kemah Weekend - February 10-12 Friday, Feb. 10 – Krewes Into Kemah Kick Off Party hosted annually by Bakkhus Taverna on 6th Street in the Lighthouse District. Starts at 8pm. Annual bash includes live music for dancing on the patio and lots of Krewe fun! Compete in the Best Beads & Best Mask contests. No cover charge. Full menu and full bar available for an additional cost. All ages welcome.
Saturday, Feb 11 – Galloway Gallop Fun Run starts the day with a BANG! The run begins at 8 am with a certified 10K and 5K race followed by a Kid K Dash at 9am. As always, the Galloway Gallop features a beautiful scenic course, great prizes and a fantastic finish-line party that includes refreshments, music and children’s activities and is known as one of the most family friendly & fun races in the Bay Area. Saturday, Feb 11 - Kemah Mardi Gras Parade: Participants line up behind T Bone Tom’s at 10 am. The parade begins 11 am at the corner of 5th and Bradford Streets. The frolicking procession travels north up Bradford St. to the Kemah Boardwalk and back down Kipp Street along Galveston Bay and ends at the Jimmy Walker Community on 9th Street. No fee. Saturday, Feb 11 – Post Parade Mardi Pardi: T Bone Tom’s Backyard. NoonDusk. Enjoy live music from Jerry Diaz, costume contest, parade awards presentation, arts & crafts booths, raffle benefitting Spina Bifida kids camp, moonwalk, face painting and much more. This annual celebration is a colorful crowd pleaser. Very family friendly. Free admission. Full bar, regular menu and crawfish available for an additional cost. All ages welcome.
Saturday, Feb 11 – Masquerade Ball at Zone 504 – 9 pm until close – Hosting Krewe du Lac’s first ever masquerade party at Zone 504 on the first weekend of Mardi Gras. Enjoy zydeco music with the famous Jabo and the Southside Playboys, Hurricane drinks on special, and all the Krewe du Lac faithful. Come out wearing you Mardi Gras beads and masks. Free admission. 21 & over only. Sunday, Feb 12 – Crazy Alan’s Mardi Gras Party – Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack – 2pm until 6pm. Join Krewe du Lac for live music, dancing, contests and lots of fun! Free admission, cash bar and full menu. The Swamp Shack serves some of the best crawfish on the Gulf Coast in a fun and funky atmosphere. Saturday, Feb 18 – Yachty Gras Parade Public Cruise - Join Krewe du Lac aboard the luxury yacht, The FantaSea and be part of the annual Yachty Gras Boat Parade. PART 2: MARDI GRAS! GALVESTON At Mardi Gras! Galveston, the extravagance found in Texas’ largest Mardi Gras celebration starts with the beads! More than 3 million beads will be thrown at Mardi Gras! Galveston and that’s just the beginning of the elaborate parades, headliner performances, family events, feasting and other festivities that come with hosting Mardi Gras island style. Rich in history, Mardi Gras! Galveston will celebrate 101 years on the island in 2012 with six new parades and plenty of opportunity for you to be a part of the festivities, from the new Decorated Golf Cart parade to the wildly popular Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade’s attempt for another world record! In total, Mardi Gras! Galveston 2012 will feature 26 concerts, 24 parades, 19 balcony parties and five elegant masked balls. In addition, the popular band Hot Chelle Rae – named the New Artist of the Year at the 2011 American Music Awards –

Hot Chelle Rae exploded onto the national music scene earlier this year with their hit single “Tonight, Tonight.” The first official single off their sophomore album titled “Whatever,” rose to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The single eventually went double platinum and the band’s fan following has continued to grow through its success.
Due to the revival of a ticketed entertainment district, last year’s event was a huge success with increased attendance, making it one of the largest and safest Mardi Gras events on record.

On the Water LAKEWOOD TO HOST BAY CUP I ON MARCH 3 Lakewood Yacht Club Race Committee Chair Gerhard Wittich has announced that the 2012 Bay Cup I will be held on Sat., March 3. This race is open to the public and race registration can be handled on line at Lakewood’s web-site: www.lakewoodyachtclub.com under the racing button. “This is the first of a two race series which features long distance racing in Galveston and Trinity Bays,” explained Wittich. Bay Cup II will be held on Sat., Aug. 11 with both races having multiple legs which total about 8 to 20 nautical miles. Overall trophies will be presented for the two race series at the conclusion of the Bay Cup II in August. Wittich related that the club will continue the Cruising Non-Spinnaker (Classic Canvas) and Cruising Poleless Spinnaker Classes as they were popular with racers last year. Other classes will include PHRF Spinnaker and Non Spinnaker, Short-handed Offshore Sailors (SOS), Multihull and possibly One-Design. A minimum of four boats constitutes a class. In addition to the long legs which will take boats into Trinity Bay, the course will present a navigational challenge. The entry fee of $70 will include post-race activities the evening of Sat., Mar. 3, with a dinner by the pool and musical entertainment in the club’s lounge. Photos of the day’s race will be shown on the lounge’s plasma television for all to enjoy. The entry deadline for Bay Cup I is Wed., Feb. 29, 5 pm. There will be a Skippers’ Meeting in the Lakewood Yacht Club Ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook, on Friday, March 2, 7:30 pm where all skippers are urged to attend for last minute regatta updates. COCK-EYED SEAGULL By Rhonda Meredith The Cock-Eyed Seagull is a well established music venue in Webster that features rock-and-roll bands. Whenever a live band is on stage, the sound of music will ooze through the doors and windows, and it’s a mad dash to get inside and onto the dance floor. Its crowd is a fun-loving mix of people who appreciate the talents of wellknown bands and the hidden gems that are booked under the care of Rick Recckio. Recckio has a passion for booking bands that have a certain uniqueness about them. “At the Cock-Eyed Seagull, we enjoy having “Hourglass.” They play classic rock, lots of Beatles and Pink Floyd, with some Crosby Stills and Nash with a side of Fleetwood Mac and can play Abbey Road from

start to finish. And “The Last Cigarette” has some serious revamped country songs into rock songs. Sometimes they bring their steel guitar player as well, and let me tell you... Wow!” Recckio goes on to say, “We are excited to have Grizzly back performing on February 25 with special guest The Holdouts. Grizzly is a band that sounds like country, punk, drinking rock. They have great flowing lyrics and killer lead guitar. When Grizzly performs, you end up raising your drink up in the air at least once a song.” Grizzly performs every other month at the Cock-Eyed Seagull. The band also came out to the venue to support their drummer who was on loan to Sovereign Sound one night last month. “When the Grizzly boys are in the house, we are sure to stock up on the Lone Star,” Recckio adds. “They draw a huge crowd and almost drink the house out of beer every time! It’s a fun night.” Definitely make plans now for this show!

On one particular night The SCENE Magazine visited the venue, The Stairs were opening for Sovereign Sound. “It was The Stairs’ debut show. I liked their energy and smooth guitar with nice vocal harmonies. They are a very tight band that is held together by a hell of a drummer,” Recckio says with a smile. “A trio is all you need-o.” Recckio’s easy attitude is reflective of the Cock-Eyed Seagull’s atmosphere. Even if it’s your first time to visit, you are a friend amongst friends. The venue is also famous for its nautical decor.

There is a vibe at the Cock-Eyed Seagull that has to be experienced to understand. It really embraces the man (or woman) who works hard to earn their money. It’s substance over fluff. “We see our customers and the musicians we book as hardworking and in the trenches,” Recckio says. Just sitting back and watching the bands interact with the audience in a fairly cozy environment makes for a memorable show and great night out that begs to be repeated. Throughout the week, the music schedule goes like this: Sunday and Wednesday nights are Cliff’s Karaoke; on Monday nights, it’s original band night; Thursday night is open mic night; and Friday and Saturday nights are, of course, live performances rocking the house. There is never a cover charge at the Cock-Eyed Seagull. It’s also a popular place to eat and just hang out at or around the bar or outside on the patio. Smoking is allowed inside. With that out of the way, fun by all on stage and in the audience left no doubt that this was a special evening to remember and it was a treat to be a part. Our second rare magical moment went down at the 69th Birthday Celebration for Janis Joplin at the House of Blues performed with our own Myrna Sanders and The Kozmic Pearls. The full bodied musical evening included two spot-on sets (plus opening act, Zig Zag) of all the tasty obscure to classic hits spinning the packed house well into the day. We got to enjoy Kozmic Pearl's newest addition, Laura Magers (keys and vocals) joining Myrna, Greg Barr (Bass), Dave Thomas (drums), and Paul Nussbaum (lead guitar) making for a total spot-on package. And the mood? Let’s just say many were feeling Janis in the house rocking and smiling the night away. ‘Twas a sweet night of peace, love, and rock & roll. Cheers!

LIGHTING OF THE MONTH - Krewe Du Lac does it again in roaring form with their annual King’s Cake celebration at T-Bone Tom's. Cheers to King Curt Carlton, Queen D'Anne Conrad, and the entire royal court for what looks like a great year. The Zydeco Dots were the perfect band for this occasion and upcoming local events include Zydeco Dots the February 10 Kick-off Party @ T-bone Tom’s at Bakkhus Taverna, the February 11 Galloway Gallop, Kemah Parade, the Post Parade Mardi Pardi (T-Bone's), and Masquerade Party (Zone 504). Wrapping up that weekend will be the all-day Mardi Gras Party at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack on the 12th. Let's do it! THERE AND BACK AGAIN - Readers know after we report a new venue as “SCENE Ready,” we’ll run a couple follow ups to be sure and both Jackie B's and Fatty's sailed through brilliantly. Fatty's pulls off pivot point honors holding down our northeast corner (although we do have Baytown in our view) where we caught Abraham's Tree juicing things up after a fine Texan and Saints wins. With Shawn (Big Air) Pritchard on board, the Tree's set list has branched extensively with into the rocking, dancing, get down partying spread. We were a bit bummed after the Texans

ing that took three years to construct, local residents and experienced businessmen Roger Gage Jr. and coowner Jody Stevens are seeing their vision of entertaining customers come to life. As you step inside the doors, the aroma of American grille cuisine welcomes you. Roger’s Head Chef Coco is passionate about the creative and artistic side of cooking. On the menu is a wide variety of offerings already, but she says “even more selections are coming soon.” There are more than a half dozen types of pizzas, steaks, and the appetizer pricing starts at a mere 5 bucks. Try the homemade potato chips and fried veggies. They are thinly sliced with a blend of the chef’s secret spices sprinkled on top and served with ranch dressing. Their signature sliders come three to an order with a choice of pork, chicken, or hamburger. The pork and chicken are slow cooked and shredded, then tossed in Roger’s signature Sailor Jerry Rum BBQ Sauce. Healthy options include grilled chicken, blackened shrimp, and grilled fish tacos. In March, only large size crawfish will be available.
We’re told they are in the planning stages of a once-amonth, reservation-only dinner pairing with either beer or wine. “It’s not enough to serve great food in a fun atmosphere alongside a cold beverage,” says Desirae L., Roger’s Promotions Manager. “Customers want to be entertained and at Roger’s we offer something for everyone.” For instance, downstairs at Roger’s offers a full service bar within the restaurant. A variety of beers are on tap including the exclusive Hoegaarden beer and Woodchuck Granny Smith draft cider. Happy hour is from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The game room is adjacent to the main dining room and is filled with games such as shuffleboard, pool tables and Golden Tee. Roger’s is set up to show the big game or any other sporting event on any of their 40 TVs, including the impressive wall of TVs above the main bar. - Continued on Next Page

Rock and roll has been a definite influence to the owners, and it’s obvious throughout the venue’s decor, especially in the Rock Shop. This room is decorated with rock and roll memorabilia and is a cool place to partake in a little karaoke on Wednesday nights or to watch live bands on Friday and Saturday nights. For February, the stage will boast the likes of Mama Tried, David Grace, and Heart & Soul. Upstairs at Roger’s is their “Whiskey Room” for overflow restaurant seating. Acoustic music sets are offered here on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights with access to an upstairs patio. Concluding the tour of Roger’s Bar & Grill are the outdoor amenities like plentiful wrought iron table seating, a full service bar, and a stage that is currently being built on the wooden decking. Smoking is only permitted outdoors. Roger’s Bar & Grill believes in giving back to the community and supporting charities. For instance, wine corks are donated to Spec’s to raise money for schools. On the daily menu is One Hope wines who donates 50% of the proceeds to various charitable causes like the military, autism, global warming and breast cancer to name a few. - Continued on Page 43

The CHAD WARE BAND: Performing music for the everyday person By Rhonda Meredith “I don’t consider myself a singer first... I am a guitar player who sings...” Chad Ware Early in his youth, local musician Chad Ware “just loved the sound of the guitar” and at age 10, he began to learn the instrument. “I had $50, and begged my dad to let me buy a guitar,” Ware remembers. “He told me ‘you’re just wasting your money’ because he didn't think I would really learn to play it.”

Ware went ahead and bought that guitar and his father made him a deal. “It was a really cheap acoustic, one and my dad told me that if I learned to play it, he would eventually get me an electric one.” Ware says he spent hours locked in his bedroom learning as many guitar licks as he could. “I was trying to get that perfect tone!” he laughs. Ware even took a few lessons and a little over a year later, his dad held up his end of the bargain. By his mid-20s, the Dickinson resident was making a living in the Houston area as a lead guitar player for major musical acts such as Perfect Stranger, Janie Fricke, Rick Trevino, and Cory Morrow. These opportunities lead to touring across the country and having the privilege to perform in some of the largest venues. Most notably was the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. Ware says he enjoyed being on the road and visiting the different cities.

In 2007, Ware started his own band. “For awhile, it seemed like I had a different band every gig,” he laments. By 2009, everything started to come together a little easier and area gigs became a lot more regular. Ware had also developed his own style. His own way within the country music genre. And what does “country music” mean to him personally? “The music tells a story. It’s music for the average everyday person. Country music can relate to anyone.” It’s not about the cowboy hat. Ware doesn’t wear one. Although from time to time he does put on a pair of boots. “My music is influenced by the blues,” Ware says and cites Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top, Tom Petty among his influences along with Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs and Steve Wariner. In Spring 2011, Ware came out with his first CD “Tell Me Something” that features 9 songs.
