SOUTH SHORE GRILLE: Where Creative Cuisine & Chic Art Meet By Rhonda Meredith South Shore Grille is a popular, local restaurant that has been serving “American Grille cuisine with a special fusion of Cuban flavor” since opening in August 2004. The comfort of the thick, dark mahogany booths, rich paneling, decorator walls, and etched glass make the establishment feel more like a private country club venue rather than one that offers 20 menu items for under $10. In fact, the daily lunch specials are very reasonably priced at $6.95! South Shore Grille has partnered with Pat O'Brien of Kemah’s Eagle's Nest Gallery to help add a chic decor to the venue. It is decorated throughout with select coastal art pieces for sale. The Eagle’s Nest has had a presence within the restaurant since Hurricane Ike. The Grille, as it called by its customers, lent interior “storage space” to the gallery while they rebuilt in Kemah. Customers insisted that Eagle’s Nest Gallery keep the art on display and for sale even after the rebuilding process was complete.

And they did. "When I opened South Shore Grille, I was looking to create not only a setting, but also an experience that I would enjoy," says owner Mickey Wooten who has more than 30 years industry experience. “I wanted the restaurant to be warm and inviting, a place where people could relax, make new friends and enjoy easy conversation." There will be plenty to discuss when trying to decide on which savory choice you will make when ordering. For starters, appetizers abound at The Grille. Try the Marina Bay hot seafood dip or stuffed jalapeños. Another tip to heed is that a salad doesn’t just have to be before dinner. Choose from the Prime Salad Dinner, Chicken Salad Dinner or Seafood Salad Louie as your dinner! Compliment your salad with one of The Grille’s several soups! Their wine, beer and spirits list is extensive and enticing. To make it simple at lunch time, The Grille offers daily lunch specials between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. for $6.95. On Monday, it’s Steak 'n Cheese Enchiladas. Tuesday offers Maria's Meatloaf. It’s the Prime Salad Lunch on Wednesdays. Thursday is the widely popular Cuban Fish Tacos. Fried Catfish is the special on Friday. And Saturday is the Omelet Special. Literally, you can eat here every day of the week and not even scratch the surface of the menu! Now that it’s March, the weather turns a little kinder and is downright friendly when the Bay Area breeze blows. The spacious outdoor dining patio is a fun place to sit. Head over to The Grille and have a good time! "The Bay Area is home to me and my family, and has been for many years," says Wooten. "We want everyone who visits South Shore Grille to feel at home, whether in our bar, our main dining area or under

Wooten has a strong sense of community and since South Shore Grille’s inception. The restaurant has partnered with the R.J.H. Foundation’s “Salute To Heroes” annual event held each June at South Shore Harbour Hotel. The foundation is named after Ray Joseph Hutchinson, a graduate of Clear Creek High School, who died in Iraq serving his country. Most recently, the proceeds went directly to 12 Clear Creek ISD students who were awarded new or renewing scholarships. South Shore Grille has also participated in CCISD’s “Restaurants for Reading” program and supported the Jeanette Williams Foundation for children’s cancer research out of Kemah. The venue also offers a private dining space for up to 25 people for a truly exceptional group dining experience. Pod-Zu’s brings the Cajun experience right here in our own backyard By Adam Donaghey Located on a busy stretch of Loop 197 in Texas City, Pod-Zu's Crawfish Shed is a welcoming site for any Gulf Coast native. With its large red and yellow crawfish flags flying in the air, repurposed wooden cable spools and picnic tables, strings of Christmas lights and fenced in property made from what looks like an old tin roof, onlookers may find themselves thinking they've happened upon some elaborate backyard crawfish boil. And that's exactly the thought owner Chad Conner hopes his crawfish shed will incite in his effort to create an “authentic Cajun backyard experience.” Conner is about as Cajun as it gets. Growing up in Lake Charles, his family would often gather with friends, enjoying boiled Cajun eats and traditional Cajun music. Both inducted into the Cajun French Music Hall of Fame, Conner's grandfather, Harry “Cliff” Conner, Sr., and his godfather (or “parrain”), Buford Galley, were integral in developing Conner's passion for “cooking with love” and Cajun tunes. Although Pod-Zu's is only a year old, Conner has long been boiling crawfish for friends, family and for hire. The trailer he caters out of can boil up to 500 pounds of seafood! It was only natural that his love of Cajun music and food culminate with Pod-Zu's; which, by the way, is Cajun slang for “my friends.” “When we cook,” Conner said, “we're consumed with pleasing the folks we're cooking for.” Conner's philosophy is simple: use quality methods of cooking and keep it consistent. For Conner, finding good crawfish is a guilty pleasure – like finding the perfect steak or a fine wine. Conner takes great care in preparing truly authentic Louisiana-style boiled crawfish and shrimp.

“Everything starts at the cleaning table,” according to Conner. “It's very important to clean the crawfish.” Along with boiled crawfish and shrimp and all the fixins to go with it, Pod-Zu's serves Cajun style boudin links and boudin balls, seafood gumbo, traditional stuffed crawfish “pistolette” sandwiches, and delectable sweets brought in from Lake Charles with simple names like “sweet dough pie” and off-the-menu favorite, “Ooey Gooey.” The restaurant is BYOB for now, but look out for beer and wine by early April (folks will still be able to bring in the hard stuff). Pod-Zu's also sells live crawfish by the sack for the customers who want the DIY experience; and Pod-Zu's own seasoning, an old family recipe. Galley Crawfish, owned by Conner's first cousin Jody Galley, supplies the crawfish from Louisiana farmers – many whom are also family. “I want everyone who walks through my front door,” Conner says with a genuine smile, “to feel like they're in my backyard.” Keeping that in mind, the

restaurant is extremely simple in design. The dining area inside is quaint, welcoming patrons with all sorts of crawfish related artwork and sports memorabilia important to its owner. (Conner is an alumni of McNeese State in Lake Charles.) Painted on the wall is the restaurant's emblem, inspired by the McNeese State Cowboys logo refashioned with its cowboy riding a crawfish instead of a horse. The kitchen is neat and tidy and separate from the boiling pots and cleaning tables. But outside on the patio is where it's at. The exterior is accented with old, rusty tin in order to give a homestyle feeling – fitting, as the material is actually from Conner's childhood barn in Louisiana. Wooden tables fill the grassy space amongst rusty decorative antiques, deer antlers and strings of lights. The space is totally kid friendly and complete with a playground area so they can run amok while the adults enjoy a hearty meal. On the weekends, Pod-Zu's often features local talent in the backyard – David Grace, Jared Waggoner, Cody Kouba, and others. Large parties are welcome and encouraged to take over the patio – Pod-Zu's hosts a lot of parties and get togethers. - Continued on Page 21

PAN JAM STEEL DRUM ARTS MARCH FESTIVAL IS A BEAT AWAY 24 & 25 By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor The annual spring festivals are around the corner, but the premiere event that defines the changing of seasons and literally shakes off the winter blahs is the Kemah Pan Jam Steel Drum Festival. Pan Jam is a two-day event, March 24 and 25 that is a true celebration of the history and preservation of steel drum music. The party of the season will be located at the Kemah Visitor Center & School Museum Parking Lot (6th & Bradford) in Kemah. Saturday festival hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. Even though it is free admission, the line-up of music is worth the cost of a major concert ticket. Freddie Harris III This year the organizers are bringing back Freddie Freddie Harris III was born in Harris III as headliner and will include sets from a Gulf Coast faNew York but raised in Trinidad vorite, Jerry Diaz and his band Hanna’s Reef and also a first time after his folks moved back to the appearance of The Rhythm Project. Additionally, an eye-pleasing islands and as the saying goes, treat will be the Pele O Polynesian Fire Dancers, dancing to this apple didn’t fall far from the drums with fire at dusk on Saturday evening for an impressive hip tree, his father is the famous shaking performance. Freddie Harris Jr., the guitarist and arranger for Harry Belafonte. Freddie began playing the steel drums at age 4, when most tots are pretending to play musical instruments Freddie was mastering the steel drums and by age 6 was playing with the Rising Stars Steel Orchestra in St. Thomas. He returned to the U.S. in 1990 and continued his international music career touring and winning numerous national steel drum competitions including 1st place in the Miami Florida Pan Solo Competition. Freddie has a big fan base and they are eagerly awaiting his performances, Saturday (3/24) afternoon and evening and Sunday (3/25) afternoon. His most recent CDs are Steal Explosion and Misty, and he has always been happy to autograph them and visit with the fans during the breaks.

This music festival showcases steel drum bands from all over the country, and this year, Pan Jam will introduce a very special group of young musicians, The Rhythm Project All Stars. The Rhythm Project was found in 1996 in Portsmouth, Virginia, and the program serves over 100 students from 4th to 12th grade in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. The Rhythm Project All Stars is the program’s premiere performing ensemble. They have a wide repertoire that ranges from the calypsos to the arrangements of classical compositions and pop music with many Caribbean favorites. - Continued on Page 24

to open this month, performances March 3, 4, 10 & 11 The Royal Academy of Fine Arts' Broadway Studio Workshop production of The Sound of Music will open this weekend! This beloved classic show by Rodgers & Hammerstein features such hits as Do Rei Me, The Sound of Music and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria. Performances will take place March 3 and 4 and 10 and 11, tickets are $10 each and can be purchased by calling 281-480-1466. The Broadway Studio Workshop (BSW) provides professional level training for the more experienced theatre student ages 18 and under. A season of popular and standard Broadway Shows are selected for the year. Students begin the semester with an audition to sharpen their auditions skills, as well as audition for roles in the show and the semester concludes with a full stage production of the show. This workshop production is directed by Mr. Michael Tapley whose work work has been seen at Theater Under the Stars, Seattle's Fifth Avenue Theater, Goodspeed Opera House, Kansas City Starlight, Oklahoma's Lyric Theater, The North Car-

The Rhythm Project All Stars have performed throughout United States and Canada and has performed at two of the world’s largest tattoos. (A tattoo is a centuries-old Scottish tradition of celebrated performances of pipes and drums). The All Stars have also opened up for Gladys Knight. This band also conducts the yearly event, Rhythm Live, a full-staged production outlining the evolution of the Caribbean Steel Drum and Calypso music to an audience of over 1500 elementary and high school students in Southeastern Virginia, and they serve as the primary community engagement program at the Virginia Arts Festival. The director of Rhythm Project is Sophia Subero and Associate Director is Dave Longfellow, whose dedication ensures that this talented group’s mission of multi-cultural artistic excellence and educational outreach is realized. Jerry Diaz, a long-time favorite along the Gulf Coast and his band Hanna’s Reef will be performing Caribbean hits during Pan Jam. Jerry, a soloist and songwriter, founded the band Key West in 1993, and then after much success and tours started his current band Hanna’s Reef in 2002. A favorite of “Parrot Heads,” his Jimmy Buffet styling always has the crowd up and dancing. Born and raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, Jerry’s songs reflect the lifestyle along the coast, highlighting boating, beaches, bars and babes. The Morphis Art of A ttraction

Diligently painting four to six hours a day for the last ten years, Artist Chris Morphis, has kept positive artistic energy flowing. He full-heartedly believes that same energy manifests into positive results. “Like attracts like” according to the Law of Attraction. For Chris, his undaunting dedication produced abundant success. Chris began drawing at a young age and used art as an outlet during his teen years. Graffiti and airbrushing became his main interests before moving to oil and acrylic painting. Chris’ oil paintings are rich in colors and textures. His works such as “Calm Before the Storm” about Hurricane Ike and “Falling in Love” are haunting and the images stay with you after your eyes no longer peer into the paintings. Chris had big visions to make art for a living and to continue to have fun. His strong belief in the Law of Attraction and use of meditation allowed big ideas to become a reality. He found a niche in painting to live music. It first started at his home studio. Chris listened to the music of Tool and painted abstractly without thinking. Not long after, he heard the band Sun Salutations at Texas Hippie Connection. Inspired by their music, Chris asked to paint with them. The band agreed it was a “cool idea.” Chris sold his first live music painting that same night and the requests for more shows poured in. “The music takes control in my head”, explained Chris. He said the venue, the crowd and the band all contribute to the images he paints during a show. Chris admitted he sometimes doesn’t know what the paintings mean until he views them the next day. The live-show

paintings illustrate the energy of the show with great detail. The use of acrylic paint allows multiple colors and layers since it dries fast. The paintings reflect the depth and complexity of the music and attract and hold attention as much as a live band. Perpetuating the positive theory, Chris partnered up with other “like-minded” believers and the Morphis Art Collective was soon formed. Chris said, “it all came together.” The group includes Josh Kufahl, Chad Tolentino, and Heidi Kreeger; each bringing a different talent to the collective from organizational and marketing skills to knowing how to run a business. One of the collective’s mantras is Peace, Love, and Success. “What you think about most, you attract in your life,” is hand-written on a napkin that hangs the studio’s “focus board” as a daily reminder. Chris and his collective don’t just try this philosophy, they succeed with it. Their first step to success was meeting and meditating together. They offered advise and listened to each other. The collective put out in the world what they sought after. Together they broadened the search and they reached for their goals by opening doors to other artists, musicians and opportunities. Spring Break Music Unity Freedom Festival March 16, 17 & 18 • Historic Porretto Beach on Galveston Island By Rhonda Meredith

Make plans to attend The Second Annual Spring Break Music Unity Freedom Festival 2012 that will be held at Porretto Beach centrally located on Galveston Island during the weekend of March 16 to 18. The musical portion of the event will host more than 30 bands and DJs performing on two beachfront stages. There will be a variety of genres for all types of music lovers, like reggae, bluegrass, folk, hip hop, dub step, electronic, and good ole rock and roll. According to Borde Room Entertainment, the producer of the event, a portion of the bands confirmed as of press time were Mama Tried, Shark Attack, Footpie, A.M. Prowlers, Elbodo, Sundrunk, Soulfiya and The Black Lung Crew. Borde Room Entertainment, a Seabrook-based independent artist network and management company, was bold enough to think outside the box in the spring of 2011. The boldness of a dream, evolved into a vision, then manifested itself into a one-of-a-kind event that exceeded all expectations. In addition to the live music, those in attendance will be treated to a large variety of vendors offering food, beverages, crafts and other activities. Camping will be allowed as well at the privately owned Porretto Beach. The beach property is clean, beautiful, and can offer alcoholic beverages. Now, there is no reason to go to South Padre to party or take off to Austin for music when you get all that and more

“Last year’s festival was not enclosed with fences, so it is hard to define an exact attendance. But the Galveston Police Department took head counts through the event and estimate that between 10,000 and 12,000 attended last year. LAKEWOOD TO HOST J/105 MID-WINTER Upcoming Calendar CHAMPIONSHIP March 9-11 J/105 Fleet Captain and Lakewood Yacht Club racer Bill Lakenmacher has announced that Lakewood will host the national J/105 Mid-Winter Championship Regatta to be held March 9-11 on Galveston Bay. “We are very excited to have this regatta come to the Houston area for the first time,” related Lakenmacher. “In the past, the J/105 Class Association held the Mid-Winter Regatta in Key West.” Hoping for 15-20 J/105 participants from around the country, race organizers are looking forward to three days of “as much racing as possible” said J/105 racer Bee Bednar. It will be a windward/leeward course with the first gun at 10 am all three days. Cost for the regatta will be $300 which entitles racers to a free crane to splash their boats into the water, a Saturday night dinner and party along with the Sun. HOUSTON YACHT CLUB TO HOST ELISSA REGATTA March 31 - April 1 on Galveston Bay Mark your calendars for a fun weekend of racing, food and fun during the Elissa Regatta March 31 through April 1 at the Houston Yacht Club, which is located in Shoreacres, Texas. The regatta is open to all sailors. Online registration is available on the HYC web site at www.houstonyachtclub.com on the Race and Regatta page. The schedule of events is as follows: Friday, March 30: Silent Auction bidding and 50/50 Raffle starts at 5 p.m. at HYC. Regatta registration runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at HYC. Competitor’s briefing begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 31: Warning Signal for the first race is at 10:30 a.m. Silent Auction bidding and 50/50 raffle continues at 3 p.m. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. Regatta entries receive two dinner tickets (one ticket for singlehanded boats) and a t-shirt. Hats, extra t-shirts and dinner tickets will be available for purchase. Dinner tickets for non-competitors cost $15 per dinner ticket. Sunday, April 1: Warning signal for the first race is at 10:30 a.m. with two races scheduled for the day. Awards presentation tentatively set for 4:30 p.m. at HYC. SOUTH WEST INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW MARCH 22-25 AT THE SOUTH SHORE HARBOUR MARINA & CONFERENCE CENTER South Shore Harbour Marina, League City is home to the largest and most exciting in-water boat show to come to the Lone Star State – the South West International Boat Show, taking place March 22-25. For 2012 the organizers are excited to announce two major partnerships: GEICO, the Presenter and Title Sponsor of the event, and the endorsement of Sail America as part of the prestigious Sail America Boat Show program – making the event not only the largest in-water and onshore display of new and brokerage powerboats in Texas, but also THE sailing show for Texas! Below is more information about our 2012 Heart Throbs as well as why they ‘Go Red.’ Jacobo Nurko, M.D. (The Surgeon – San Jacinto Methodist Hospital): While other little boys were dreaming of becoming a firefighter or policeman, Jacobo Nurko always knew he would become a doctor. His desire to practice medicine never waned and he later earned his medical degree at Anahuac University School of Medicine in Mexico City, Mexico. His fascination with the complexity of the heart and technological advances in the field made vascular surgery a natural choice for his specialty. Dr. Nurko is a vascular surgeon with Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, and affiliated with the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. He is an avid soccer player and enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. Dr. Nurko supports Go Red for Women and is going red because he believes education and empowerment are essential keys to women adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle. Ryan Pryor (The Golfer – New York Life & Former Pro Golfer): Ryan lived the dream so many guys dream of... playing golf on the pro circuit! During his three years as a golf pro, he
competed in the Nike and DFW circuits as well as several individual golf tours. Ryan also participated on the course in media marketing for the DFW Golf Tour. After 3 years and numerous miles traveled, Ryan hung up his golf clubs and moved on. Ryan Pryor, a graduate from Baylor University, where is also played basketball, is now a successful Financial Representative for New York Life in the Austin/Houston area. Ryan dusted off his golf clubs specifically to Go Red For Women and is going red in honor of his grandmother who was a heart-attack survivor and the other women in his life. Without the grandmothers, mothers and sisters in our lives, where would we be? Matthew Emory (The Entrepreneur - Pinkberry): Taking a quote from Matthew Emory’s twitter page sums up this heart throb perfectly... Southern culture, for sure, Tequila Ambassador to the South, and Pinkberry fanatic. Matthew Emory, franchise owner for the Houston franchise of Pinkberry, arrived in Houston via New Orleans. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore School of Business & Economics where he also played four years of college football. Matthew went on to graduate from Cintas’ Executive Management Program with highest honors in growth and profit, where he received extensive training in strategic decision making and operational management. Matthew and his wife Meredith were awarded the Pinkberry franchise for the Houston market. Matthew has an avid appreciation of southern culture and southern food despite growing up north of the Mason Dixon line. Matthew and Meredith, who currently reside in Houston, are as dedicated to charity and community service as they are to their business ventures. Upon opening their first Houston Pinkberry in the Bay Area in September, they immediately became involved in the American Heart Association’s annual Heartwalk, so it only made sense to spread their participation into the Go Red For Women campaign. Matthew feels that it was an easy association to make because Pinkberry focuses on using the freshest fruit and live, active cultures in their yogurt to promote a healthy lifestyle. Their Pinkberry store is located in Baybrook Passage Shopping Center at 45 and Bay Area Blvd, with a second location opening in The Woodlands this May. Matthew is going red because a person’s health is the cornerstone for a better life.

CROSS FIT CHALLENGE
2ND ANNUAL ICM FUN RUN IN APRIL Interfaith Caring Ministries (ICM) announced its 2nd Annual 5K Fun Run and Walk “Striding for Self-Sufficiency.” The event will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 starting and finishing at ICM’s food pantry and administration offices (located at 151 Park Ave, League City). A “Kids K” for those 12 and under will also be held with all children receiving a ribbon. Early registration is $25 for the 5K and $10 for the Kids K. Each participant will receive a T-shirt. ICM established the Fun Run in 2011 to promote awareness of the financial struggle many Greater Bay Area families face and raise funds for agency services. With almost 200 participants, and through generous community support, the inaugural event was a great success. Proceeds in 2012 will once again benefit ICM’s ongoing services which assist local families who are in an economic crisis due to issues such as illness and unemployment. Pier 27 Tavern is known for its great weekly events. The venue hosts an acoustic night, karaoke contests, live music, and the best DJs in town are rocking the remixes. Every holiday is an excuse to celebrate all that is good in life. Since opening in 2009, Pier 27 Tavern has been bringing music lovers together through entertainment. Owner Shun Mason Wafer knows that keeping her customers entertained is a priority, and it’s a good thing. “People want to leave their cares at the door and just have a good time and enjoy themselves!” The entertainment line-up changes frequently with the best of the best coming back each month. The live performance band schedule typically includes the funky music of Fidelity Maxx and the Out Of Control cover band. Keeping up with the latest musical trends brings more DJs into the establishment like DJ KO who is in the house on Twisted Thursdays, Galveston’s own Clifton Holmes a.k.a DJ Redd Wave, and BET’s Master of the Mix (Season 2) Energizer Tha DJ. Energizer Tha DJ’s hometown is Houston, but recently, he appeared in 2 million+ households during the BET channel’s competition/reality show. His cutting-edge performance features old-school remixes that have

Wafer says that Pier 27 chooses the entertainment carefully. “The first rule,” she says. “Prospective bands, DJs, or any prospective entertainer must be able to entertain! We listen to who our customers are talking about, who we have read about, and then we go and see if that certain energy translates well. Karaoke is living large on Tuesday nights beginning at 9 p.m. Lady BG gets the party started with the latest party songs, popular current artists and the classics. Get involved and sing like no one is watching to win the contest that awards $100 to the nightly winner, $500 to the 10th week semi-finals and $1,000 every 12 weeks for the finals. Wafer is present at Pier 27 most nights, but you won’t catch her on stage even though she does admit that with a musical family background, she is able to “harmonize.” On Wednesday nights, come in and chill to the new acoustic night that launched last month. Marc and Dru from Shark Attack are brilliant with their acoustical talent. There is always music playing through the venue’s ample speakers, and Pier 27 Tavern is a great place to have fun with friends. The drinks are cold and the kitchen serves up hot food. MARDI GRAS - Came early this year and not a moment too soon. We sailed along with the Krewe du Lac at this year's Royal Ball back on board The Spirit of Texas Paddlewheeler with party favorite, South Coast, rocking the deck the entire evening. Never a bunch to throw in the towel early, the Krewe dropped into Amadeus to wrap up the evening with Abel and Phil on stage serenading the night away and if that weren't enough...

The super staff at Bakkhus Taverna handily took the torch with ease hosting the annual Krewes into Kemah Kickoff Party. Rolling out the welcome mat, lighting up the heaters, firing off the Flamin' Saganaki, and unleashing Samone and The Superstars on the masses made for quite an over-the-top evening. According to the weatherman, it was definitely colder this year compared to last, but thanks to the great folks at Bakkhus, it Bakkhus Taverna mattered not in the least!
Jerry Diaz and HanJerry Diaz & Hannah’s nah's Reef did their Reef @ T-bone Tom’s magic and Southbound kept the room groovin’. Good mojo mention to Bob and Jane Head and all the supporters rallying to send five kids to Spina Bifeda camp this year! The center of the universe found it's way to Zone 504 that evening for masquerading fun with the incredible Jabo playing only playing one set the entire night, a non-stop sizzling set of heart-thumping zydeco swing that lasted the *entire* evening. Now *this* folks, is how to start off the month!
February rain and clouds gave way to bright sunny skies as the Kemah Parade once again rolled through the lighthouse district. The larger crowds seemed happy to freeze down in Galveston at the Seawall parades that day. We opted to play it with the smart bunch and partied under T-Bone Tom's heated palapa.

He is an Irish and Scottish mix. March is Frozen Food Month. What kind is his favorite? Stouffer’s lasagna! March is also Poetry Month. Billy’s favorite poem is “Footprints In The Sand.” Last, but not least, March 14 is National Potato Chip Day. So, Ruffles or Lays? Lays… The Cheddar and Sour Cream flavor is his fave!

30 years of traditions with a new twist! Go visit TOOKIE’S By Rhonda Meredith The origin of the first hamburger served in America is a bit of a gray area. But over the past 100+ years, one thing is for sure. We have a strong love for the hamburger. In 1975, the original Tookie’s opened and quickly set the standard for this mouth-watering entree. The casual, fun family environment created a vibe that made Tookie’s a home away from home. The vanilla Cokes and cherry Cokes were a treat. The decor was creative with cool and heartfelt vintage looking signs that made the time pass by quickly while you waited for your appetizer or main order to arrive… Tookie’s was beloved by Seabrook and the rest of the Bay Area. Life was tasty. In an unfortunate turn of events, a natural disaster struck on September 13, 2008. Hurricane Ike was merciless as he tormented the coastal regions of Texas. Tookie’s had over five feet of flood water damage and became a casualty of Ike. To area residents, it was like losing a family member. Then the rumors of a resurrection began to swirl… Tookie’s was going to re-open! The restaurant opened once again in August 2011. Almost to the same day it had originally opened back in 1975. In 36 years so much has changed in the world, but thankfully some things have stayed the same. “The four months of renovation was more difficult than a brand new construction,” says Tookie’s General Manager Ali Velasco. “Our end result was to keep the original Tookie’s spirit alive. There is a familiar feel to it with some modern touches.” The 1970s interior theme is back with vintage signs and wood paneling adorning the walls, as well as the establishment’s signature green and yellow colors. The kitchen is completely brand new, there is an addition of a full bar in the back that extends onto a dining patio, and the restrooms are larger.

At the heart of Tookie’s is the classic menu with the original recipes intact. “We are not reinventing the wheel,” Velasco notes. “Tookie’s has been around for over 30 years because of the careful selection of top notch ingredients.” The restaurant uses produce grown locally and cuts it fresh and the bigger and thicker Certified Angus Beef hamburger patties are made fresh daily. Nothing satisfies like a well-made hamburger and Tookie’s “veteran” burgers will do just that in half pound and one pound versions with or without cheese. The specialty burgers or “creations” sit deliciously at the intersection of old-fashioned familiarity and gourmet excellence. Most notable are the #99 (The Champion) burger whose patty is marinated in wine, cheddar cheese, onions, and spices; the Bean Burger that is moderately hot with a base of refried beans, crushed Fritos; and Pace picante sauce, and the highly requested Squealer (blissful) burger that has bacon blended into the meat. March will introduce the Turkey Burger for a limited time. Customers will decide if this burger goes on the menu or not. Taking a tour of the rest of the menu is no less impressive. Tookie’s offers three “oh so good” appetizers with cool names like “Bombshell,” “Pelican Eggs,” and “Supa Dupa Chalupa.” If you want “somethin’ else,” try a sandwich with grilled chicken (also in a salad form), chicken fried steak, or fish. Kids have plenty of options on their menu too. Tookie’s has a couple of house drinks that should be mentioned right about now, the Tookie’s Tornado and Tookie’s Tsome. Speaking of Happy Hour, it’s Monday – Friday 4:30 – 6:30pm. Sherry Kinsey, Tookie’s Promotions Manager, say to “like” Tookie’s on Facebook to keep up to date on everything related to the restaurant.
