Restaurant Profile

Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill: Where the Party Animals Go! By Rhonda Meredith The party animals, families, bikers, singles, couples, the young, and the young at heart know that Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill has the best crew and view on the Galveston Bay! Everyone is welcome to 4438 Boulevard in Bacliff seven days a week. The restaurant serves up tasty signature items that are sure to please. Order a “Hot” appetizer of Chicks (chicken), Mermaids (shrimp), Cats (catfish), or Pearls (oysters). Creative names for delicious dishes that all come wrapped in bacon and jalapeño pepper, then battered and deep fried. Noah’s Ark has served “over 2x 2 million oysters” grilled in the half-shell in many different flavors. In addition to po-boys, wraps, subs, and baskets, the kitchen offers a popular fried meatloaf sandwich and hearty Angus beef, flame-broiled hamburgers. The “Noah” (a third- or half-pound patty, two pieces of bacon, two pieces of Swiss cheese, sauteed onions, and grilled jalapenos on the side) and the “Hawg” (a one-pound patty with two slices of bacon, Swiss and American cheese) burgers both are customer favorites. Noah Ark’s comfort food is served up as a “Blue Plate Special” in small and large. Order it Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to receive the “Early Bird Special” and knock a dollar off each plate. Other daily specials that rotate throughout the week include the shrimp dinner made blackened, beer battered, hot and spicy, coconut, lemon pepper, Cajun, sweet and sour, (and the choices go on!) the pork roast dinner, all-you-can-eat-spaghetti, and more. Dinner time is the right time to select one of Noah’s favorites for dinner. The restaurant has fresh seafood made grilled or fried and juicy steaks made to order. You may have a hard time deciding on just one, so go for a combination platter. But don’t forget about the most important meal of the day! Noah’s Ark breakfast menu is as yummy as it is extensive. A breakfast buffet is offered on Sunday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays are also home for a triple drink special. Order a Bloody Mary, Mimosa, or a Screwdriver for only $2 each. Speaking of drinks, Noah’s Ark has an Oyster Shooter that pairs an oyster with vodka, Bloody Mary mix, Tabasco, and served in a shot glass. And their newest addition to their drink menu is a margarita infused with an upside down 7-ounce Corona called a “Coronita Rita.” So, grab a drink, bring your friends, order a delectable treat, and take a seat anywhere on the multiple decks outside or upstairs. The bay breeze will wash your cares away. Time it on a Friday night and enjoy the Parrot Head party and live music. If you like indoor games, join in one of the many Texas Hold 'em poker games that are held throughout the week. Hosting an event is easy when you book the venue’s Lion Den party room. It seats up to 40 people, and it’s free! Call 281-339-2895 to reserve. Noah’s Ark has been at its current location for over 15 years. Owners Fred and Beverly Lyttle have 30 years experience in the restaurant industry. If you are looking for somewhere casual and friendly, then you have found it. The Lyttle’s lend their support to non-profit organizations throughout the year including the Houston SPCA Animal Adoption Center.

NEW RESTAURANT REPORT

Tabella at Clear Creek Winery: Kemah’s New American Bistro By Rhonda Meredith Kemah is welcoming a new chef in town. Tabella at Clear Creek Winery is a “farm to table” restaurant offering fresh and delicious American cuisine. The menu features seasonal dishes created from locally sourced ingredients. “We are not re-inventing the wheel,” said Tabella’s Executive Chef Link Livingston. “But Tabella has designed menu choices that are carefully prepared to enhance our customer’s dining experience.” Chef Livingston is committed to using only high-quality ingredients and creating healthier entrees that are gluten-free. Drawing on his 15+ years experience in the industry, he tends to not use butter, but rather olive oil and kosher salt and only uses farm raised chicken in his recipes. It’s this kind of detail, plus simple presentation that sets Tabella apart. Tabella’s menu has familiar dishes with flavorful twists you’ll crave. The seasonal aspect of it will change the variety, so always ask your server what the newest additions are while keeping the restaurant’s signature selections in mind. For example, the soup of the day rotates, but tomato-based bisque is a staple. It is not a coincidence that the lunch and dinner menu complement each other. Chef Livingston has been diligent and applied careful consideration from the chicken salad sandwich and gourmet salads to the Cheese Board or Shrimp Diablo appetizers, and Herb Crusted Chicken – just to name a few. Other entrees to consider are the Bone-In Pork Chop, Petit Filet, the fish of the day, Shrimp Scampi, and Rib Eye Steak. All come with the Chef’s vegetable of the day. Additional sides may be offered, just ask your server. Your server will also be knowledgeable about Tabella’s fine wines. Half of the wines are from Clear Creek Winery, while the other options include wines from all over the world. Have a glass with dinner and another with dessert. Unique desserts are sure to be a treat at Tabella. Try the Bananas Foster, Key Lime Mousse (not pie,) a Pecan Ball made with vanilla ice cream and rolled in caramelized pecans, then drizzled in chocolate, or the Mixed Berry Parfait. Maybe finish your dining experience with a fresh cup of tea or coffee while savoring Tabella’s atmosphere. The interior of the restaurant is intimate and cozy. The dark, rich chairs and tables are warmed up with ambient lighting. Wine bottles adorn the brick walls and related art and décor are placed in view. As weather permits, seating outdoors under the covered patio is available. Reservations are welcome and Tabella is happy to make your special occasion a memorable one. Call 281-957-9090 to schedule. Tabella is located at 709 Harris Street in Kemah. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner.

Art in the Park

The FFAI, a 501-c-3 non-profit organization, vision includes art shows, art walks, juried art competitions, demonstrations, an artist forum, and artist workspaces and more. The size of the space FFAI is occupying at present falls short, and does not allow these activities to take place. This art festival will help to secure a larger workspace for FFAI, something that they are in great need of, due to the popularity of the classes and summer camps. You can support FFAI by donating monetarily or by donating an auction item.

Art in the Park, the 3rd Annual Friendswood Fine Arts Institute’s (FFAI) event, will be held May 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Stevenson Park, on FM 518, in Friendswood. Talented Texas artists will be featured along with live entertainment, kids’ activities, crafters, food, live entertainment and live art demonstrations. The 2012 Featured Artist is Michael Gilbert and the featured entertainer will be Nuevo Flamenco Guitarist, Guillermo Serpas. The proceeds from Art in the Park will continue to provide artistic ventures to the residents of Friendswood and the Bay Area.

For more information, call 281-996-7700 or e-mail your request for pick up to info@FFAIonline.com. For additional details on Art in the Park go to www.aitpfestival.com.

Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance Art Show The annual international car and boat show, Keels & Wheels is May 5 & 6 at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. Most residents have attended this event or know of it by seeing the highways and streets full of classic and one-of-a kind vehicles on the first weekend of every May. This year the event’s Grand Marshal will be three-time Indy winner, Bobby Unser. One additional feature is the K&W Art Show and Sale. Meet the artists and browse their collections. The art for sale includes paintings and photography. The subject matter varies from cars, boats, to waterfront lifestyle, birds, landscapes and more. This is great place also to pick up graduation, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts all while attending a fun event at a beautiful venue. Saturday it is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For tickets or more information to Keels & Wheels, log on to www.keels-wheels.com or contact Chairman Bob Fuller at 713-521-0145 or email: bfuller@4u.com. THE PAINT PUB: Paint, Sip, Shop & Have Fun! By Rhonda Meredith The “paint ‘n sip boutique” is sure to bring out your creative side in a fun and social group setting. No experience is required. Actually, no outside materials are even required! The Paint Pub provides canvases, paint, brushes, easels, aprons, and even artist instruction. All you have to do is decide where to put your artwork when you get home. During the two- to three-hour session, you will learn step by step how to replicate a featured acrylic painting while listening to background music, the soundtrack to your creativity, and maybe even indulge in a little sipping, singing and dancing in the aisles.

It’s a unique venue to hold an in-studio Girl’s Night Out, a birthday or bachelorette party, as well as a corporate or charitable event. Bring “Mom” in on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 13) at 2 p.m. and she receives a complimentary drink. Those seats are $35 each. On Monday May 14, The Paint Pub will host a special event for local Girl Scout troops and their parents at 6 p.m. at $20 per seat. They also have parties for children, along with family sessions on Sundays. Open painting sessions are held Wednesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. without instruction and give you a chance to “freestyle” paint. Walk-ins are welcome, and it’s $20 per seat. The best thing to do is go to www.thepaintpub.com and click on “Calendar” to see what is going to be presented to paint, the cost, time, and even register for the class. Advance reservations are recommended. Owners Lindsey George and Melanie Delgadillo were high school friends and college roommates. They put their collective backgrounds to work and were inspired by the idea of creating a place where you could have a great time, and when the time was over, you would have something nice and tangible to keep. So, the ladies came up with a really cool place that aligns with their passions where all are welcome. And it’s just not for females… “Once the guys get in here, they don’t want to leave!” says George with a smile. The Paint Pub offers beer, wine, champagne, and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase. Outside food is allowed. They also have a front-of-the-house boutique that has a lot of goodies for sale: Jewelry, accessories, home decor, purses, clothes, barware and more. Speaking of the bar, be sure to really check it out. It took 120 wine crates that George and Delgadillo personally broke down with hammers to create this unique space. They are located in the Nassau Bay Town Square at 1840 NASA Parkway. “Pub On The Go” is offered onsite in the comfort of your venue. Contact The Paint Pub for full details at 281-333-2200 or email info@thepaintpub.com. Show are $3 for students and $5 for adults. The students and faculty from the CFHS Fashion Department are producing the show with the help of the CFHS Communication Department students and staff. For more information on the Clear Falls Fashion Show or The Fairy Godmother Project, call 281-284-1100. Clear Falls High School is located at 4380 Village Way, League City.

As Real(ism) As It G ets

Much like a photographer with a fast lens, artist Isaac “Ike” Rodriguez captures a moment in time or a candid expression that absolutely memorizes. But, his realism is created using acrylics and his amazing talent with a paint brush. Rodriguez rubs a neocolor crayon over the acrylic which gives the appearance of a fine oil painting. Each meticulous brush stroke and the placement of light and shadow all add up to a depth and perspective of a photograph. Rodriguez said he enjoys fooling someone into thinking what he painted in 2-D looks more three dimensional. “You can put your hand in it,” as Rodriguez described.

Rodriguez recounted that his mother and father both draw well, so Rodriguez began drawing at a young age. He said, “I did anything I could do that was art when I was young.” Rodriguez would copy black-and-white cartoon drawings his father made while attending a continuing education class at a local college. Years later at a Houston Astros baseball game, Rodriguez saw a painter actively creating a piece depicting his sports heroes. He decided then and there to give painting a try. Rodriguez didn’t think any of his paintings were good. He said he wanted to set his first attempts on fire. He then called the official artist to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Robert Hurst, to mentor him. Rodriguez

expressed, “It’s a different world when you start adding color.” He said Hurst showed him the tricks to using color and helped him get subjects to “look like they should.” Rodriguez admires the shadows and wrinkles in faces. He sees life happening and “wants to put it on canvas.” Rodriguez succeeds at not only capturing a look, but “someone remembering something that happened to them.” With only a few years of lessons, Rodriguez was asked by a friend attending a sports memorabilia show to paint a portrait of former Miami Dolphin player, Steve Slaton. The portrait was so impressive that Slaton signed it. Thus, opening another venue for Rodriguez in the portrait painting arena. Other sports memorabilia fans and even sports figures, such as NFL player Donnie Avery, started requesting paintings from Rodriguez. He welcomed the challenge and knows that painting people “is not what a lot of people do well.” Rodriguez said he appreciates his mentor and friends for helping him grow his talent and network his business. Rodriguez added he now has a new-found appreciation for what athletes do. They are always working even off-season because “they love what they do.” Much like the dedication of the athletes, Rodriguez paints. He ,too, is always working. Rodriguez expressed that he would love more opportunities to paint his local heroes and especially members of his favorite football team, the Houston Texans. June 23 and 24, Rodriguez will have art auctioned during the Earl Campbell Charity Weekend benefiting Multiple Scoliosis of Houston in The Woodlands. Meet the artist at his inaugural art show at Bakkhus Taverna (605 6th Street in Kemah) Thursday, May 17 from 7 to 10 p.m. Enjoy music, light refreshments and view his art. To see more of his work or commission a painting, visit ikesartstudio.com or call 281-788-2843.

YOUNG BAY AREA WALK HERO LEADS THE CHARGE FOR ARTHRITIS WALK One day, in the not too distance future, young Bella, age 10, hopes to be a chef. But, before she grows up to realize those dreams, she'll have to endure a painful childhood fraught with complications from Polyarticular Juvenile Arthritis. Before her diagnosis she had a very stiff walk and slow to move without pain. Now, with the proper diagnosis and daily injections, she’s paving the way for others suffering from one of the over 100 types of arthritis, considered the number one cause of disability in the U.S. In her role as the 2012 Bay Area Walk Hero, Bella has organized a team and is raising funds, which someday may provide a cure for her very rare condition. She'd like to encourage others in the Bay Area to get moving and join her and the other 5,000 Houston-area children with arthritis, as they walk to raise funds and awareness for the Arthritis Foundation. Bella's motto: be brave and be strong.

2012 Lunar Rendezvous Festival Season IGNITING OUR FUTURE has launched

The 47th Annual Lunar Rendezvous Festival has gotten underway, and there are plenty of opportuJ PAMELA nities to enjoy the many activities of this year’s Festival, aptly titled “Igniting Our Future”. The Festival PHOTO was begun in 1966 by Maggie Plumb DeNike and a host of Bay Area volunteers to salute the space program’s historic rendezvous of Gemini VI and Gemini VII in space. Today it continues to salute the space program and to foster community spirits, raise funds that are widely distributed to stimulate, develop, and portray the art, drama, music, and culture of the Bay Area. Over the years, events have changed from one year to the next; but they have always been dedicated to wholesome enjoyment and appreciation of hard work, good fun, and high achievement. General Chairman Jill Reason has rounded out a Festival Season to exactly fit that bill. She has garnered a strong leadership of Event Chairmen, who will help ensure that those traditions continue. Dr. Kimberly Weathers is the Chair for the Kick Off Party on April 22 at UHCL in Atrium II from 4 to 6. Everyone is invited to be introduced to the various Festival events and to meet the Court. The 2011 King, John Wilkins, will be announcing the 2012 King who will be presiding along with the Royal Court. The reigning Queen, Peyton Barrier, is a senior at Clear Lake High LRF QUEEN PEYTON BARRIER School where she is a member of Future Farmers of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Diamond Darlings, and was a member of the Clear Lake Cheer team for three years. She is also a member of the HLS&R Jr. Rodeo Committee. Peyton will be attending Texas A&M in the fall and is proud to be a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 2016. Queen Alternate Danni Cantu is a senior at Clear Creek High School where she is Student Council President and a Varsity Cheerleader. Danni also plays the violin and serves as Orchestra President. She will be attending the University of Texas in the fall. Captain Brooks Kubena is a senior at Clear Lake High School where he is a member of the Falcon football team and basketball team. He is editor for the school newspaper. Brooks is involved in Gateway Church as a member of the church band. He plans to attend the University of Texas. From 2008 to 2011 over $500,000 has been contributed to local organizations. The Festival welcomes and is grateful for support from businesses, organizations, and individuals in our community. The Lunar Rendezvous Festival is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that preserves both the historical lore and accomplishments in the space sciences made by residents of the Clear Lake/Bay Area. The Festival organization benefits the Bay Area Museum, college scholarships, area libraries, cultural arts groups, Bay Area Turning Point, Interfaith Caring Ministries, and many other non-profit groups. Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence

of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

GALVESTON TO GULFPORT RACE SLATED FOR MAY 25-31 Upcoming Calendar Lakewood Yacht Club’s newest offshore race is from Galveston to Gulfport, MS scheduled for May 25 -31. This is roughly 425 nautical miles across the Gulf of Mexico to the new Gulfport Yacht Club and marina. “Many races are run from Galveston south down the coast to Port Aransas and beyond, but we were looking for a new destination going east this year,” explained Gulfport Race Chairman Jim Winton. “We hope to have about 30 boats at the starting line in Galveston for this race and then perhaps a number of boats will stay in Gulfport to participate in the Gulfport to Pensacola Race which starts on June 15.” Being only a seven-hour drive or just over a one hour flight from the Houston/Galveston area, the Gulfport destination will give friends and family a chance to join the post-race party and activities in the Gulfport/Biloxi area. It will also allow power boaters an opportunity to run the Intracoastal Waterway to join in the fun. Entry deadline is Sunday, May 6 with the late entry cutoff on Sun., May 13. There will be three starts: cruising boats will start at 2 p.m. at Houston Ship Channel Buoy 11 on Fri., May 25; PHRF Fleet will start on Sat., May 26, 2 p.m. at Houston Ship Channel Buoy 11; and the Multihull Start will be on the same and same time. The finish deadline is Thurs., May 31, 1 p.m. This is a Category 2 race open to all racing, cruising, spinnaker and non-spinnaker sailing yachts. Monohull yachts must be at least 30’ LOD and must have a minimum crew of four capable sailors. Multihulls must be at least 27 feet in length and have a minimum crew of three experienced sailors. The Awards Banquet will be on Thurs., May 31 at the new Gulfport Yacht Club. BAY ACCESS LAUNCHES JF FLEET AT LAKEWOOD YACHT CLUB Bay Access President Thomas McAndrew has announced that it has purchased a fleet of 18 Flying Junior (FJ) sailboats to promote double-handed sailing and racing on Galveston Bay. “This is a great learn-to-sail boat for the family with children in middle and high school, which is an unmet need for our young sailors” explained McAndrew. “The beginner sailor can go out as crew with an experienced Skipper, have fun on the water, and progress to an accomplished racer. The FJ boat is also a great way for parents to sail with their children.” The FJ boat was designed in 1955 in the Netherlands and was built to serve as a training boat for the then Olympic-class Flying Dutchman. It has become the most popular boat in college sailing. With a very clean boat design, it has a beam of almost 5-foot with an overall length of about 14-foot. Bay Access is a 501 c (3) organization with purpose of promoting amateur sailing on Galveston Bay. It leases a newly constructed, first class dock which Lakewood built close to its Seahorse Lounge. From the new dock, all 18 FJ’s can be safely and easily launched for quick access to Clear Lake or the Clear Creek Channel. The dock is next to a spacious lawn which is great for flaking sails and socializing, and has close-by parking. The FJ Fleet, which will be managed by Lakewood’s new Sailing Director Marek Valasek, will be open to the public for organized events such as classes, clinics, and high school regattas. The

fleet was purchased after 2 ½ years of service at the University of South Florida. “One of the primary motivations behind the Bay Access FJ program is to facilitate and promote competitive high school and collegiate sailing on Clear Lake and Galveston Bay,” McAndrew added. “But, we will also have learn-to-sail classes for all age groups, including adults.” Bay Access is offering corporate or private sponsorship opportunities. This sponsorship is a great opportunity for local companies to help promote youth sailing in the Galveston Bay area. The sponsorship will be used to retire the loan used to purchase the boats and will help fund the initial operations of the fleet. Bay Access will allow companies to display their firm’s logo on an FJ for four years. The logo will also be on both the Bay Access website under a special sponsor section and on a banner during organized events. The website is www.bay-access.org and will be launched in the next month. For questions or further information about the FJ Fleet, its activities and sponsorship opportunities, contact Thomas McAndrew at tmcandrew@erockhold.com or Todd Payton at tnk2gether@yahoo.com

LYC’s 30th SHOE REGATTA takes to the water May 19-20 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Race Committee Chairman Gerhard Wittich recently announced that the 30th Annual Shoe Regatta will be held over the weekend of May 19 and 20. In 1982 Lakewood hosted the first Shoe Regatta which was originally sponsored by Foley’s Department Store and Sperry Top-Sider Shoes. Bay Access, a not-for-profit organization that supports amateur racing, is the organizing authority of the race. Sponsors include Mount Gay Rum and West Marine. The Regatta, which is open to the public, is a favorite among local racers because, in the past, each crew member of the winning boat in each class was awarded a certificate for a pair of Sperry deck shoes; hence the name of the Regatta. The Shoe Regatta is for one-design, handicapped, and cruising sailboats over 20 feet in length and with a cabin. There will be three race courses set on Galveston Bay: a windward/leeward course for the One Design classes; a windward/leeward course for handicap rated boats; and a third triangular course to provide a long race for handicap rated spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats. PHRF Certificates are not required for Cruisers. The Skippers Meeting will be held on Fri., May 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club, 2425 NASA

Parkway in Seabrook. “We urge all skippers to attend this important gathering so that they can take full advantage of all aspects of this weekend regatta,” related Wittich. The Saturday evening party will feature music by Jeff Lopez’s “Cross Roads” and a dinner of Chicken Fried Steak. The Awards Ceremony will follow the last race on Sun., May 20, and will be held in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club. Participants can register on line at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com. For questions, please contact Lakewood Yacht Club at lyc@lakewoodyachtclub.com or call the office at 281474-2511.

Lakewood hires new sailing director Lakewood Yacht Club General Manager Terry Chapman recently announced that the club has hired Marek Valasek as the new full-time Sailing Director/Head Coach effective May 14. “Marek is a worldclass sailor, winning a total of seven National Championships for his home country of Slovakia in Optimists, Lasers and Finns during the 1980s and 1990s” New Lakewood Yacht Club Chapman remarked. Sailing Director Marek Valasek “As an elite coach and sailing director, he has had great success in developing yacht club sailing programs and coaching competitive racing teams and has acquired diversified experiences in directing and coordinating operations and staff.” Valasek graduated in 1999 from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, with a Masters degree in Physical Education and English and Literature. He moved to Miami in 2000 where he served as the Sailing Head Coach for Corral Reef Yacht Club for 8 years followed by his position as Sailing Director at Lauderdale Yacht Club from 2009-2011. He managed very large summer sailing programs with up to 12 employees in charge of over 200 sailors. He is currently the Optimist Head Coach for the highly-competitive Team Gnarly out of New York. “Our Lakewood Yacht Club Board of Directors and Officers feel that Marek is truly a professional, both on and off the water. We look forward to him joining our staff for a long and productive tenure” added Chapman.

Who You Need To Know About Right Now:

ZACH TATE BAND By Rhonda Meredith Zach Tate’s quiet persona reminds one that it is indeed the quiet ones you have to watch… His story is an interesting one. Born south of Toronto, Canada, (and even south of Detroit on a map) in Windsor, he grew up in the country listening to Southern rock. His passion for music eventually led to learning the guitar. And the trumpet… As well as the snare drum… You see, since Tate’s music class in school did not offer the guitar, poor Tate had to “branch out.” It was much to the chagrin of his music teacher who had little faith in Tate’s musical abilities. Lucky for his fans and supporters, the musician never let the teacher hold him back in his love of music. Eventually, Tate did what most do not do… He left Canada and headed to Los Angeles with a good buddy in hopes that an idea they had might just turn into a dream within the entertainment industry. But alas, Hollywood was fickle. But that was ok. Lessons were learned, experiences were gained, and life relationships were forged. Everything happens for a reason, and you carry on the path you were meant to be on. It was time for a change.

UPCOMING SHOWS May 5 (Saturday) 9pm Loading Dock Too 3505 Hwy. 146, Bacliff

Six years ago, the Canadian with Southern rock in his veins left California and didn’t look back. He made his way to the Bay Area, and it was good. Some say it was destiny. Back in Canada, Tate grew up with a legendary road about 20 miles from his hometown ironically named “Texas Road.” The road was more famous for ghost stories than Budweiser and blue bonnets, but nonetheless its name does in fact resemble our great Lone Star state. Coincidence? I don’t think so. “Texas Road” also happens to be the title of his first CD. The Zach Tate Band has had great success performing all around the Bay Area, Galveston, and Houston areas. They have appeared on Great Day Houston and My Fox Houston. You may have caught one (or many) of their performances at Cabo, Cock-Eyed Seagull, Fatty’s, Katie’s, or even the annual Lone Star Rally. The band just released their fourth CD titled “End Of Time.” The process was a labor of love and the blood, sweat and tears, also known as recording in the studio once or twice a week for approximately six months, produced awesome results. This is Tate’s best work to date, but he is so modest and downplays this fact. It is indeed a CD worth being at the top of your collection.

the scene’s martini madness “Neon Dude” – Discover a really unique drink! It’s a delicious blend of imported English vodka and the natural, refreshing taste of lemon-lime when the neon yellow colored Dude Vodka is mixed with Malibu Caribbean Rum and Midori melon liqueur for a sweet, fruity taste. Add a splash of lemonade and no garnish is needed. “Texas Peach” – St-Germain liqueur is the basis of this smooth as peach fuzz martini. The liqueur is imported from French and made from freshly handpicked elderflower blossoms. Blend with Smirnoff Peach vodka and Rose’s lime juice, then add a dash of bitters and shake gently. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry. “Pomegranate” – This vibrant colored drink is almost too beautiful to sip! PAMA pomegranate liqueur is coupled with the lemon-lime flavor of Stolichnaya “Stoli” Citros Vodka. To make this the right way, a squeeze of lemon, a splash of sweet and sour, and a tiny bit of simple syrup are added for good Martinis were prepared at: measure. I want something fruity, what should I order? He recommends the Mexican Flag margarita for the whole month of May in honor of Cinco de Mayo. And if I want food with that drink, what should I get? Alex says the fajitas are fantastic. That’s actually the reason he has been at Mamacita’s all this time! He says Mamacita’s food is “good quality food,” but the fajitas are “awesome.” I admit his excitement did make me hungry… Has he served anyone fa-

mous? Yes! While not one to drop names, Alex has served notable astronauts, football, and soccer players. Speaking of sports… Alex is a big fan of the Texans and Astros! He is excited about the Texans primetime schedule next season and in reference to the Astros, he said “Next season will be better.” Tequila please! I have never met anyone who knows more about tequila. No tequila was harmed in this interview, but I sure wanted to take all the cool bottles home! Ask Alex about his favorite ones: KAH (in a skull bottle) or Milagro Romance (two tequila's in an odd shaped bottle) or Tanteo that is jalapeno flavored.

PIER 27 TAVERN: YOU WILL GET HOOKED! By Rhonda Meredith “Going to have a great time where everybody knows my name… It’s a place where DJs spin music from Heaven. The dance floor is jumping all around me by eleven. Down by South Shore, there’s a tavern called Pier 27…” You get the idea. Pier 27 Tavern is where the cool people go any night of the week to have some fun. Don’t let the work week get you down! Take a look at what’s going on during a typical week at the venue. Your Monday blues become a thing of the past when you can look forward to “My Time Mondays.” It’s the venue’s movie and poker night. Go sing it like you mean it with Lady BG during “Time Out Tuesdays.” This sizzling lady puts the “ok” in karaoke. She will have you getting your groove on with the latest party songs, popular current artists and the classics. Got a hankering for hops? It’s “Big Ass Beer” and acoustic/open mic night on “WindDown Wednesdays.” It makes the “hump day” of the week like no other! “Twisted Thursdays” keeps the party going on with the area’s best DJs spinning tunes that are unique and fun. Crawfish is on deck during the season from 7 p.m. until it’s gone. End the week with your inner freak! It’s “Freaky Fridays” at Pier 27 Tavern and the drink specials are freakishly good. When the weekend gets going good and the weekly routine is over, it’s time to give in to those urges on “Sexy Saturday” when the venue turns into “Club P27.”

Area Acoustic Nights Show Off Megawatts Of Talent By Rhonda Meredith They may not play with the benefit of electricity, but the Bay Area’s acoustic musicians are drawing a lot of support and attention to this musical styling. Acoustic sets, also known as “stripped” or “unplugged," are performed with instruments whose sound is not electrically enhanced or modified, and without a shred of digital addon.

Tommy Alverson Thursday, May 10 T-BONE TOM’S

While the Bay Area thrives on the full electric live shows, an acoustic performance is a bit more intimate. Local musician Chris J. Hardy describes an acoustic show as being “pure and organic.” He further explains the appeal from a musician’s perspective, “It gives me the opportunity to be a storyteller and explain the back story of a song and how it came to be. This type of audience is more receptive to hearing that.”

Trapt Saturday, May 12 SCOUT BAR

Several local venues have dedicated weeknights that feature acoustic music performances. For instance, on Monday nights, Katie’s Bar in Bacliff offers an “Acoustic Jam” with Lynn & Cisco. There is never a cover and always a good time. Another example is Union Tavern on El Dorado in Clear Lake City. The venue hosts “Acoustic Tuesdays.” Also no cover and the pitchers are less than five bucks. It’s a laid back atmosphere with pool tables by the stage. Pier 27 Tavern in South Shore ushers in Hump Day with acoustic sets by musician Marc Borde and friends. Get a “Big Ass Beer” and enjoy the show. (Read more about Pier 27 Tavern in this issue.)

Andy & Dreamsicles

Zone 504 in Kemah partners with Bee Room Entertainment on Thursday nights for musical sets that are a little more blues and reggae flavored. Drink specials include $3 U-Call-Its (excluding premiums.) Also on Thursday nights, down the road off Egret Bay Boulevard, Scout Bar has an “Acoustic All Star Jam,” unless a national act trumps the schedule.

Sunday, May 13 LA BRISA LEAGUE CITY

Roy Hockenberry, the lead singer of alternative rock band I.D.R., is used to performing with amps turned up and mosh pits. He welcomes the chance to perform acoustically for a change of pace. “It’s just a different vibe,” Hockenberry said. “Acoustic performances are definitely more raw.” Many of the Bay Area’s bars, pubs, taverns, and restaurants offer live music that include acoustic sets. Whether it is on a certain night, or scheduled throughout the week or month. One thing is for certain, any night (or day, afternoon, or evening) of the week is a perfect time to enjoy an acoustic set. No electricity required, but the musicians will light up the stage to bring you their megawatts of talent!
