First Time and Repeat Customers Always Find Something New and Different at Dickinson Bar-B-Que & Steak House

Welcome Back! By Sue Mayfield-Geiger Keith and Holly Lilley never assume anything. As owners of Dickinson Bar-B-Que & Steak House, they would like to assume that once you step through their doors to experience pure Texan cookin’ in a relaxed country setting, that you will feel right at home. That is why they or one of their staff make every effort to greet you the moment you enter to not only welcome you but to explain the menu on the wall and give you ample time to decide what to order. This is a true Texas family-owned and operated business. Keith handles the day-to-day operations, Holly heads up the catering department, son Jared works the line when home from Texas A&M, son Austin (due to graduate from Texas A&M in August), advises on web and social media marketing and sister Diane manages the dining room. With customers returning again and again, new faces become familiar faces. But the

Lilleys never take that for granted because they want every dining experience you encounter to be as good, if not better, than before.

Real food and guilty pleasures “You won’t find expensive price tags or tap water from fancy bottles here,” says Keith, who never assumes anything in the restaurant business except that your expectations are met with each visit. Just really good food want where you can indulge in your guilty pleasures.

In a hurry, but still that great Texas cuisine?

Dickinson Bar-B-Que has a convenient drive-thru with a large hand-painted Texas mural on the outside of the building to enjoy while guests order everything from cheeseburgers and bar-b-que Family Packs to 24-ounce rib eyes. Of course, you can always call ahead and have your order waiting for you as you drive up to the window.

“Along with our award winning bar-b-que, we have a varied menu,” says Keith, “like U.S.D.A. Choice hand-cut New York strip steaks, filet mignon and rib eyes, pork chops, just-caught Texas Gulf shrimp, Mississippi catfish, hand-battered chicken fried steaks and chicken, fresh salads with homemade dressings, sizzling burgers and more than 20 made-from-scratch desserts by Miss Anna Lee Clark.

RESTAURANT REPORT

Laura’s Cafe & Tea House By Rhonda Meredith In the heart of Clear Lake, at the corner of Bay Area Blvd. and Space Center Blvd. is a great place to read, work, or get together and “do lunch” (or breakfast)! The light, airy interior and friendly staff at Laura’s Cafe & Tea House welcomes you. Start with a glass of tea or a cup of coffee. Laura’s house tea is the Republic of Tea’s Ginger Peach flavor. This best-selling tea, called the “longevity tea,” offers the sweet lushness of a fancy peach seasoned with the tingle of spicy ginger and is prepared hot or cold. Additional tea flavors are available and change regularly. The House Blend coffee is to be savored hot or iced, caffeinated or decaf, to-go or enjoyed with unlimited refills when sitting in Laura’s. Lattes and frappes are also on the menu. Free Wi-Fi is available as is a selection of books to read. Laura’s has an in-house book exchange if you need to borrow a good book. The menu offers daily specials, soups, quiche, salads featuring the customer favorite “Cha Cha Chipotle Salad,” burgers, and specialty sandwiches including the fabulous “Ultimate BLT” and “Ham and Pesto Panini.” Complimentary cucumber finger sandwiches are served, and basil soup is the signature appetizer. The children’s menu includes the fun and tasty “Fluffernutter!” Save room for gelato or Laura’s super decadent banana caramel pie. Take-out service and party trays are available. Make your book club or meeting extra special by having it at Laura’s. Or host a “High Tea” for any memorable occasion. Laura’s scones are a hit when paired with a bridal shower, retirement or birthday. In fact, the venue has seating for up to 96 at no charge, but call for details. The staff at Laura’s says, “There is something for everyone.” Stop by 2339 Bay Area Blvd. and see. Visit www.laurascafe.net for more information, and note they close at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Also noticeable are the many photos of locals (some celebrities), community plaques, awards, and artifacts that remind you that you are not only deep in the heart of Texas, but deep in the heart of bar-b-que country. Aromas of slow-smoked brisket, St. Louis rack ribs, Czech sausage, chicken, turkey breast, ham and pulled pork can attest to that. Anna’s desserts are also divinely delicious and you will find yourself staring at the selection of cakes and pies wondering what to grab. The pecan pie, bread pudding and banana pudding are faves. Here is what a happy customer recently wrote on an online review site: “Easily a solid 4 plus. I had the rib eye and two-rib special. The ribs were cooked perfectly and the rib eye had great flavor. My wife had the chicken and dumplings – they tasted like homemade. This is a great little family-owned joint that definitely deserves a look if you are in the area. ARTS

Featured Artist: Alecia Acevedo

By Kelley Dawson When it comes to Alecia Acevedo’s tasty creations, art is not only in the eyes of the beholders, it’s sure to be in their stomachs as well. Her art is quite literally tasteful. Acevedo developed her artistic capabilities while drawing as a kid. She said, “I used to draw a lot when I was younger – and as a teenager. I took art classes in school whenever possible.” Acevedo later became interested in baking while serving on the galley crew aboard a ship for a Christian humanitarian aid group. With her newfound interest in baking and her hunger to create art, Acevedo finally transitioned from paper to cake pan at a cafe almost ten years ago. She learned to bake and decorate cakes from the owner. Acevedo’s enthusiasm for decorating prompted her to take cake decorating classes at a local community college. The cafe didn’t offer Acevedo much creative freedom, so she began baking and decorating cakes for friends and family. Over the past five years, her home business has grown by word of mouth and the worldwide-web. Due to the growing demand for her creative cakes, Acevedo revealed that she must now draw out her cake ideas first. In the beginning, she was able to decorate them completely free-hand. Plus, she said, the orders are getting more challenging “so drawing out the concept is a must.”

Halloween include a severed head with visible brains and a motorized, two-foot spider eating a rat. Acevedo’s edible medium combines many sweet confections. She said she works often with fondant. “I can roll it out smooth.” Acevedo added she also enjoys molding gum paste. She stated, “The paste is a more firm and will hold shapes and stay in place.” Acevedo even uses rice crispy treats as bases for larger shapes and characters. She cuts and sculpts a variety of designs and figures for her cakes. In addition, her palatable palette comprises of ganache, chocolates, spun sugar and food color gels. Acevedo said she mixes the gels with extracts to create a variety of colors to add shading and texture to her cakes. Her savory masterpieces display such delicious detail eating them almost seems a shame. By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor It is that time of year again where many parents are wondering how to entertain and educate their children this summer. Our area has many programs and the local libraries are a good start. Two area camps that are always a hit with the kiddos are The Arts Alliance of Clear Lake (TAACCL) and Space Center Houston.

SC

It’s Children’s Summer Camp Season

“A Bad Year for Tomatoes,” a play by John Patrick, is about a famous Hollywood actress Myra Marlowe – a diva who is fed up with the pressures and demands of her acting career – leases a house in the tiny New England community of Beaver Haven and settles down to write her autobiography. In an attempt to shoo her three nosey neighbors away she invents a mad homicidal sister. The sidesplitting comedy consists of interesting characters that include the Hollywood diva’s producer, a crazy sister, a murder, three nosy neighbors and a handyman. The ruse works well at first, but complications soon result and finally the sheriff brings it to a close. Directed by Charlotte Jackson and produced by Lina Pignataro. Myra Marlowe is played by Kay Lunn; other actors include Bill Krause, Jada August, C. Alane Johnson; Tim Raeke, Carolyn McLeod and Kristina C. Smiley. Director Charlotte Jackson was a drama teacher for almost 25 years (the last 16 of those years where at Santa Fe High School). Charlotte was a natural fit as the director of this acting group at Franca’s, “I met the Pignataro family during those school years (at Santa Fe High School). Lina Pignataro (producer) was my student and continued to act with me when I directed Santa Fe Community Theatre, also when I directed at U.S.A. Theatre in La Marque and later did dinner theatre in several locations including the original Franco’s Real Italian Restaurant.” Charlotte retired in from teaching last fall and that is when Lina – the driving force behind dinner theatre at Franca’s Real Italian Restaurant – asked Charlotte to go direct the theatre. It was Lina’s passion and her dream to bring dinner theatre back to the restaurant, which is currently owned by her sister Franca. Earlier this year, they opened with a comedy “The Man with the Plastic Sandwich” by Roger Karshner. The current cast is comprised of actors who have several years’ experience acting in productions in the area. “It has been fun to work with such a talented group of actors who bring much of their own character into their work, Charlotte said. “Join us for great food and a comedy in June.” Show dates are June 8 & 9, June 15 & 16 and June 23 & 23. THE PAINT PUB: Paint, Sip, Shop and Have Fun!

Making the Bay Area more colorful By Rhonda Meredith The “paint ‘n sip boutique” is sure to bring out your creative side in a fun and social group setting. No experience is required. Actually, no outside materials are even required! The Paint Pub provides canvases, paint, brushes, easels, aprons, and even artist instruction. All you have to do is decide where to put your artwork when you get home. During the two- to three-hour session, you will learn step by step how to replicate a featured acrylic painting while listening to background music, the soundtrack to your creativity, and maybe even indulge in a little sipping, singing and dancing in the aisles, too. It’s a unique venue to hold an in-studio girl’s night out, a birthday or bachelorette party, as well as a corporate or charitable event. They also have parties for children, along with family sessions on Sundays. Open painting sessions are held Wednesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. without instruction and give you a chance to “freestyle” paint. Walkins are welcome, and it’s $20 per seat. The best thing to do is go to thepaintpub.com and click on “Calendar” to see what is going to be presented to paint, the cost, time, and even register for the class. Advance reservations are recommended. Owners Lindsey George and Melanie Delgadillo were high school friends and college roommates. They

put their collective backgrounds to work and were inspired by the idea of creating a place where you could have a great time, and when the time was over, you would have something nice and tangible to keep. So, the ladies came up with a really cool place that aligns with their passions where all are welcome. And it’s just not for females… “Once the guys get in here, they don’t want to leave!” says George with a smile. The Paint Pub offers beer, wine, champagne, and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase. Outside food is allowed. They also have a front-of-the-house boutique that has a lot of goodies for sale: Jewelry, accessories, home decor, purses, clothes, barware and more. Speaking of the bar, be sure to really check it out. It took 120 wine crates that George and Delgadillo personally broke down with hammers to create this unique space. The Paint Pub is located in the Nassau Bay Town Square at 1840 NASA Parkway. “Pub On The Go” is offered off-site in the comfort of your venue. Contact The Paint Pub for full details at 281-333-2200 or email info@thepaintpub.com

REASONS TO LOVE OUR NEW SHUTTLE This issue of The SCENE will hit the streets the same day Space Center Houston’s new replica shuttle, named Enterprise for now, arrives via barge from Florida.

SHUTTLEBRATION: Join us for this historic occasion as we welcome Space Center Houston's biggest addition ever, a full size shuttle replica. The replica will arrive by barge on the shores of Clear Lake on Friday, June 1. To celebrate its arrival, there will be a FREE street party at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) dock located at 3000 NASA Parkway on Clear Lake near the Hilton. Saturday, June 2:

To celebrate, I’m sharing some reasons why we should be excited about the newest addition to Space Center Houston. Receiving this shuttle will help ease the sting that the home where the shuttle was designed, its development managed, its crews trained, its flights controlled, and its lost crew members mourned, didn’t get one of the real shuttle orbiters. According to Google Maps, the nearest "gentleman's club" to Space Center Houston is more than 10 miles, multiple municipalities and a county away. While the Shuttle Enterprise, which will be displayed on the flight deck of New York’s USS Intrepid this summer, will be moved off the aircraft carrier and into a glassenclosed exhibition center on the other side of an eight-lane highway across from the Intrepid facing one strip club and next to another on land the museum doesn't yet own. The baitand-switch for the selection proposals is bad enough, but more concerning is the proximity of strip clubs to New York’s shuttle, which should be treated as a school and educational destination for children like ours will be here. Although the name of the replica will likely change following a naming contest by local school children, Explorer seems so appropriate. It is coming to the home of modern day explorers (the Astronauts). It will be able to inspire the millions of future explorers who visit Space Center Houston every year. But I’m also curious to see what names the children come up with. So it’s a win-win. The shuttle arrival will offer an opportunity to take a self portrait of yourself in front of the shuttle and send it to U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (possibly with a special hand gesture or greeting). If you have seen the TV interview last year of the Senator from New York gloating over securing the Enterprise while criticizing and taking some harsh and in-

If you haven’t seen the interview, visit SCENElive.net and take a look. On a more positive note: I love the fact that this shuttle is a gift from our friends at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. JSC and KSC have a special relationship, and it’s really cool that our Florida friends recognized the injustice (or incompetence) of the shuttle retirement selection process and had our back. It was really inspiring watching the national news coverage of Discovery’s arrival in Washington D.C. and the Enterprise’s flight to New York, both riding piggyback on a 747. Those flights made for stellar photographs as the orbiters were ferried above landmarks including the U.S. Capitol and Statue of Liberty. But it just seems appropriate that our shuttle isn’t coming by air, but by water. (A major thanks to Houston-based Kirby Corporation, who picked up the Explorer and is towing it back to its new home on a barge.)

The space shuttle replica will be loaded onto a mobile transfer vehicle for transport to SCH. The lakeside load-out will take a day. No public events planned for this day.

Sunday, June 3: 5 :00 - 8:0 0 A M - Replica transported along NASA Parkway from JSC dock to Space Center Houston. NASA Parkway and NASA 1 Bypass will be closed from 5 AM - 9 AM 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Following the arrival, a free, family-oriented public celebration in the SCH parking lot, offering viewing opportunities of the replica, NASA space exploration exhibits, family activities and more. This is a high-fidelity replica of the space shuttle, built to scale using schematics, blueprints and archival documents provided by NASA and shuttle contractors. Unlike the actual orbiters which will only be viewed from a distance, visitors to Space Center Houston will get a superior shuttle experience, including entering the cockpit and more. An extensive upgrade is planned to get the interior up to accurate museum quality ensuring that Houston remains the top destination for tourists with an interest in manned space travel. It's arrival June 1 gives us a chance to show the world how much the shuttle program means to us and how proud we are to be the home of U.S. Manned Space Flight and the Shuttle program. So make sure you take an opportunity to welcome the shuttle and participate in the Shuttlebration! - John Ennis, Publisher

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence

of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

INTRODUCING THE PLEASURE PIER GALVESTON’S NEW $60 MILLION DESTINATION IS OPEN! Summer has arrived and so has the new Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, which the SCENE was invited to visit for its opening over the Memorial Day Weekend. During our visit, 13 of the 16 rides were operating and we had a blast. The Texas-sized Pier developed by Tilman Fertitta (sole owner, chairman and CEO of Landry’s) is 120 feetwide and 1,130 feet-long. The Pier thrusts boldly into the Gulf of Mexico from 25th Street at the famous Galveston Seawall, welcoming guests for dining, rides, games and entertainment throughout the year. Rides from thrilling to gentle line the long Pier perimeter, creating an exciting sensation of being suspended above the water. And the sun seems to know visitors to the pier are over the water, so be prepared with sunscreen. Luckily, a pretty nice breeze blows in and along the walking lanes and between the rides, offering some relief from the heat. Highly recommended!

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier 2501 Seawall Blvd. • Galveston, Texas 77550 For additional information and hours of operation, please visit www.pleasurepier.com or call 855-789-7437.

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier Rides Pirate’s Plunge Log Flume promises to thrill and chill you on warm days when your flume splashes 22 feet and 40 feet into cool, fresh water. Carousel gives a beautiful, cheery greeting to guests as they enter the Pier’s Midway. In fact, this classic double-decker temptation to ride has horses, chariots or sea creatures galloping right in the Midway, so why not start here? Revolution Up, down AND around. How fast? Try less than seven seconds a revolution! And did we mention it revolves you out OVER THE WATER? Rock N’ Roll has a retro glitter style that would make Elvis blush. Climb in your car and ride backwards, forwards and around to the music. Cool. Cyclone coaster loops 60 feet into the air to rotate passengers forward and backward, while the horizon does flip-flops. Sea Dragon is a swinger with an ocean view. First it swings its 10 rows of riders up, up, up 50 feet over the Pier, then takes them down and back up, over the water. Gulf Glider is a colorful classic swing carousel, with single and double seats that swing while you rotate and tilt. Pier Pileup Bumper Cars let you channel those Interstate 45 aggressions into a million laughs in antique and classic bash-‘em vehicles. This is actually two rides: One for kids, with smaller cars, another for adults. Similar to most of the rides at family-focused Pleasure Pier, parents and their children can ride together in the big cars. Texas Tea Cups is another Midway classic, fun for adults and kids, especially together. The cups twirl. The riders giggle. Big Wheelin’ knows little kids like big trucks. Smaller kids can ride with an adult, bigger kids on their own in this safely circling convoy. Frog Hopper gets its name from, well, hopping. It takes a load of kids up, and then – wait for it – drops them, not too far, but when they don’t expect it. And then, whoa, drops them again. They like it. They laugh. Sky Shooter at rest looks like a huge blue and orange spider napping. Then it wakes and goes wild, spinning its 10 captive vehicles while taking them up and down, round and round, even out over the ocean. Wanna fly higher? Push a button and you do. Whew!

Baytown’s Pirates Bay Waterpark – Fun for the Family Pirates Bay Water Park, located at the Wayne Gray Sports Complex, 5300 East Road in Baytown, is a Caribbean themed 3-acre water park. Operated by the Baytown Parks and Recreation Department, the family-friendly resort-styled park opened the summer of 2010. Pirates Bay features attractions for everyone with a large and colorful Pirate themed water play center, complete with a large dumping bucket and an awesome array of spray nozzles, and water guns; a 671 foot long lazy river and two large slide towers. Tower activities include fun for both the little ones and daredevils with everything from run-outs to racing tubes. Beach-style “zero–entry” pools (gradually sloping from the deck into the water, becoming deeper with each step, in the manner of a natural beach) is ideal for older people or families with young children.,

The park’s feature attraction is the Flowrider surfing machine. The Flowrider provides an endless moving mountain of water with all the excitement of ocean surfing that will challenge all who enter. Surfer boys and girls will ride the waves with an audience, as two covered bleachers flank the machine. The park also includes a climbing wall, a small rectangular pool for lap swimming and programs such as swim lessons and water volleyball. A concession stand providing tasty burgers and other snacks is near covered picnic areas, inviting visitors to rest between activities. An air conditioned meeting room is available year-round for rentals for family reunions and company outings. The park also offers three large picnic pavilions available for rentals for birthday parties or family get-togethers. Visit www.baytown.org/piratesbay for more information or call Pirates Bay Waterpark at 281-422-1150.

They should trailer them to our area for a few extra months of racing and enjoying the weekends on the water,” added Lakewood Yacht Club Fleet Captain Joyce Maxwell. Several local yacht clubs, boatyards, and businesses are making provisions for free boat storage in between events for racers’ convenience. LAKEWOOD YOUTH RACERS COMPETE IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lakewood Yacht Club Seahorse racers Hannah and Howdy Hughes competed in the Laser 4.7 MacLaren World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina over the first week In April. This was their second world championship to compete in as they both qualified for last year’s championship held in San FranABOVE: Lakewood racer Hannah Hughes is pictured sailing in front of cisco. They were among seven youth Buenos Aires, Argentina after a day of racing on the Rio Del La Plata river. from the United States who qualified to compete in this year’s world championship. Other sailors were from Marblehead, Maine and St. Petersburg, Florida. The Hughes siblings were coached by Todd Fedyszyn out of St. Petersburg and were accompanied on the trip by their parents, Howard and Jill Hughes of Seabrook, TX. Hannah is a Junior from Clear Falls High School while Howdy is a Freshman at the same school. On the Rio del la Plata, which flows through Buenos Aires, twelve races were held over six days with light winds in the beginning increasing to 15-20 knots the last two days. Both Hannah and Howdy prefer the heavy breeze as it compares more closely to the winds of Galveston Bay where they usually race for Lakewood. “There was also some river current which kept us on our toes,” related Hannah.

ABOVE: U.S. youth racers who qualified for the world championship are pictured at the Opening Ceremonies for the Laser 4.7 Worlds in Argentina last month. Pictured are Liam McCarthy (St. Petersburg, FL), Sophi Naughton (Marblehead, MA), Sydney Mendlebaum (New York, NY), Hannah and Howdy Hughes (Lakewood Yacht Club, Seabrook, TX).

Hannah finished 25th out of the 46 girls, scoring a 7th in one race which was the highest individual race finish for the U.S. girls. Opening and Closing Ceremonies along with nightly dinners gave the racers a chance to mingle with competitors from all over the world. Upon returning to Seabrook, the Hughes siblings presented Lakewood Yacht Club Commodore A.J. Ross with a burgee (yacht club flag) of the Yacht Club de Argentina.

the scene’s martini madness “FLIRTini” – Feeling sexy? Imagine this… The sweetness of STOLI® VANIL™ vodka seduces the very naughty 70 proof PINNACLE WHIPPED CREAM French vodka with its light, creamy flavoring. It gets a little close, if you know what I mean… So a splash of DEKUYPER’s RAZZMATAZZ dark red liqueur flavored with ripe raspberries cools the moment down. A cherry steps in for the garnish and the win. Want more? Try your best flirty gaze to a stranger across the room if you dare! “APPLEtini” – Take TITO’S HANDMADE vodka that is produced in Austin at Texas’ first and oldest legal distillery and introduce him to DEKUYPER’s SOUR APPLE PUCKER schnapps. Tito meet Dekuyper. Dekuyper, this is Tito. Give the duo a couple of shakes and one for good measure in a super cold tin shaker. Pour into a glass with Grenadine (a blood-red, strong syrup made from pomegranates) and cherry already waiting at the bottom. Get both your fruit and veggies in one sitting when you pair it with Roger’s Fried Veggie Combo. “Mexican Martini” – It doesn’t matter that Cinco de Mayo was in May! This martini is timeless when enjoying a spicy appetizer! IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC FOR SHAUN MICHAEL Shaun Michael’s determination is as deep as his voice, and the two make for a pretty powerful combination. It was just two years ago, the musician moved from Georgia to Texas. I asked Michael what any dutiful writer would, “How did you get from Georgia to Texas?” And the answer given personifies his straightforward, rather than philosophical style, “I came by truck.” While Michael’s history is still a bit of a mystery, he does say it was around age 8 when he started playing the guitar, and he wrote his first full song in his late teens. Every now and again, Michael still performs it. He also plays the bass guitar, but “not so much the drums or piano.” For the past several years, the self-professed Georgia Bulldog fan (“Is there any other team?”) has been a solo acoustic act with an incredibly full sound. Michael seems very comfortable onstage with just his guitar and expressive eyebrows as he sings about “many life experiences and observations.” Michael performs all over the area

from Galveston to Houston. On one particular day, I caught up with the justturned-33-year-old at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in Kemah. It was beautiful outside. Michael had his shoes off, was interacting with the audience, and could even be considered a little funny. The performance was one mixed with original tunes and covers from Elvis, Poison and Johnny Cash songs. His tip jar was getting crowded, and fans were snapping photos of themselves by the stage however they could. Michael’s easy persona and big smile were not something you could deny! “It’s been a special couple of weeks,” Michael said. “On April 27, I officially stopped chemo, May 5 was my birthday, and May 8 was the official year mark of remission.”

By Rhonda Meredith

You see, a few months after Michael came to Texas, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. It was a shock. Michael is, as he says, a “workaholic” and spending the next 31 days at UTMB was not anywhere on his to-do list. Nor was the 20 months’ worth of chemo treatments, but Michael met this challenge as he does with everything else in life: Head on. Life has never been more precious and the “small stuff” is just that: Small stuff. It’s evident in his voice and through the lyrics as he sings “…there ain’t nothing a little sand and

THE SCENE

49

salt water can’t fix.” The Galveston resident said “There is a song for everything in life.” Last month, Michael started recording vocals for a yet-untitled, full-length CD to be released this summer. The audience’s reaction to the preview songs was very favorable. One lady was overheard emphatically saying, “He’s good!” When receiving a compliment like that, Michael smiled and said just as vigorously, “It’s all about the music.” When he is not performing, Michael is staying busy with administrative part of the business by booking gigs, writing music, and supporting the local music scene. It keeps him busy. But he does find time to relax at home and at the beach. Ever present is his “Hall of Fame” black Labrador that you may see at a gig. Summer time is the perfect opportunity to catch a Shaun Michael music show. Head over to www.shaunmichael music.com for information. If you like what you see live, show your appreciation and be generous with the tip jar, and have a shot of spiced rum sent to the stage for Michael. Cheers!

days from 10 to 11:30 p.m. followed by acoustic performances until 2 a.m. The sign-up sheet starts at 10 p.m. Individuals up to a three-piece band are welcome and asked to bring their own equipment. The P.A. system is provided. Newcomers get to perform up to three songs. As the musician proves him/herself, Hardy said they are invited to perform alongside him during the second set. Those enjoying the show can also enjoy the drink specials that include $4.50 domestic pitchers and $4 Bombs. Participating musicians get a complimentary pitcher of beer. For a dose of mid-week opportunity to get behind the mic, head over to Pier 27 Tavern. (South Shore) The Bee Room’s artists are on hand to host the event from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The Bee Room is a network of local musicians and complimentary industry services that are bound together for the greater good. (Yes, kind of like Superman.) “It’s a laid back and a supportive environment at Pier 27 Tavern,” said Marc Borde. On Thursday nights, Hector Serrano and Fatty’s (Seabrook) open the stage at 9:30 p.m. Serrano has more than 25 years experience in the music business and loves the variety, as well as helping people. “The turn-out at Fatty’s has been great!” Serrano said. “Everyone is welcome to participate. It doesn’t matter the level of skill, the genre, or style.” Ever the straight-shooter, Serrano says that even he gained experience in an open mic setting at the start of his career, and he is there to help other musicians. “I play everything and help fill spots. The instruments are provided and it’s top notch equipment.” Find Serrano at the venue to sign-up and get a spot secured. Also, on Thursday nights, the CockEyed Seagull (in Webster on Egret Bay) hosts an open mic night beginning at 8 p.m. “It’s the oldest running open mic night in the area,” said Steve Revak, an experienced local musician who hosts the night. He has a guitar and mic for use and there is no time limit. Everyone gets an opportunity to perform. Revak advises those who attend to “be prepared for anything!” Participants receive a complimentary stereo recording of their set on a CD when they get off stage. It’s first come, first serve. An open mic night is a night to just have fun for everyone. They are all different and unique. It’s a time when singers and players can strut their stuff, show off their chops, showcase original music, and some fun covers while bonding with kindred spirits both onstage and off.

Not to be confused with a church, Ministry Lounge is also a compliment to the British culture. From the lion that overlooks the entrance, the modern interior, and the overall vibe, Ministry Lounge is dedicated to present the very best of genres such as house, electronic and dance, attracting A-list DJs and a diverse crowd that all share a common love of music. After all, Ministry Lounge is really about creating the moments that people live for. So, what makes it different? The details do. The main bar is pretty cool in its own right as it changes colors under the translucent top, but the club enthusiast may focus most of their attention to the beautiful Go-Go dancers that perform on top of it. The elegant simplicity of the spacious outdoor seating area and fully stocked bar is sure to delight the casual bar and patio hopper. For those more discerning, the swanky ambience of a “mid-town club” being closer to home is very appealing. The dress code is mostly casual, but club formal is welcomed, too. Ministry Lounge is open Thursday through Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. It hosts DJ nayyz, DJ Mpulse, DJ Sunny D on a rotating basis, as well as several guest DJs. There is no cover unless it’s a special event. “Like” facebook.com/ministryclearlake to keep up with the current happenings!
