LATITUDES RESTAURANT
GET YOUR ATTITUDE AT LATITUDES! By Rhonda Meredith Latitudes is a destination waterfront restaurant in sunny San Leon. It’s tucked away at 1817 Avenue K at 20th Street. The waterfront views of Dickinson Bay alone are worth the small drive from the Boardwalk area. Of course the word “drive” is a relative term since you can arrive by car or by boat. cup or bowl of the crab bisque, clam chowder, seafood gumbo, or shrimp or crawfish ettouffé.
Owner and local resident Kurt Vossler dredged the bay 9 feet all around the restaurant and built an impressive 400foot pier and boat launch. There is also ample parking space for your vehicle. It’s an “a-ha” moment really when you first visit this hideaway. The culmination of the bay breeze, the restaurant’s vibe and casual atmosphere makes a lasting first impression long before you ever place an order for food.
Just remember, it’s all about the attitude at Latitudes and that includes the oysters! Their self-described “oysters with an attitude” are served with several tempting sauce choices like Cajun shrimp and crab, creamy poblano jack jack, roasted salsa with cheddar and shrimp, and Rockefeller style with creamed spinach and fresh grated parmesan.
Latitudes’ menu offers a variety of seafood, Cajun influenced dishes, and traditional comfort food made from scratch under the experience of Head Cook Oscar Melendez. Appetizers include seafood stuffed mushrooms or jalapeños, boudin balls, links or crawfish boudin links, bacon wrapped or boiled shrimp, seared tuna avocado, and Latitudes lump crab cakes. Or your preference may be to start with a lighter fare like a
Delicious dining options are abundant on the entrée menu. Boiled and steamed seafood served with corn, sausage, and new potatoes or the Seafood platter lead the selections. Additional seafood plates include shrimp, fish, and oysters made to order either friend, grilled, or blackened, seared tuna, fish tacos, Seafood Court Bullion, and a soft shell crab plate. Crab can be boiled by the pound as well. Choose from Dungeness, Blue, Snow, and King crab. Other entrees feature choice steak cuts, stuffed pork chops, baby back ribs, chopped steak, grilled pork prime rib, (shrimp, beef, chicken or mixed) shish kabobs and chicken or shrimp Alfredo. Any time is the right time for a hamburger basket, patty melt, Philly chicken or cheesesteak, Oscar’s avocado chicken salad or Kurt’s Burger with bacon, avocado, and gouda cheese. Complete your dining experience with a delectable dessert created by Valli Wiggins. A slice of homemade cheesecake, German chocolate cheesecake, carrot cake, or piña colada cake is downright irresistible. - Continued on Page 15

The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series Chef Jason Strickland Signature Bistro 1918 NASA Parkway, Seabrook 281-474-4455 Background / Experience: Mostly Italian, some Cajun, continental and Latin cuisines. I've worked my way up through the trenches: washing dishes, fry cook etc., until I found a chef that would apprentice me because I didn't have money for culinary school. Your Specialty: Simplicity. I've always been taught to "Keep it simple! Keep it clean!" So I wouldn't say I have one "specialty" cuisine. All food is good when you keep it simple and clean. Let the food speak for itself. Signature Dish: Lamb with peaches and bacon Please elaborate: I brought this dish back from a five-month sojourn through the Appalachian Mountains. I was in Virginia in late spring and in the hill country. They had just brought in the spring harvest, so everything was at its peak of freshness. I don't know how, but it all came together. I've carried this dish with me ever since. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? George W. Bush while he was campaigning for his second term. I had the opportunity to do slow smoked BBQ for him and his campaign staff in Florida. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: When searing meats remember: Hot pan = Hot oil. First bring your pan to smoking hot, then add oil. This will help prevent sticking. EDITORS NOTE: Please refer to Page 16 to read more about the benefit dinner at Signature Bistro for Chef Brent Evans on Monday, September 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. Evans has undergone two emergency open heart surgeries this summer. The money raised from the benefit will go to help pay the mounting medical bills and day-to-day expenses Chef is incurring.

LATITUDES BY THE BAY • Cont. From Page 10 Latitudes strives to stay as local as possible. They use vendors like Jimi Frausto of Stone Cold Crabbers, Stark Bros Beef Shop, Railean Rum, and even get their shrimp slaw from Hillman’s. And the restaurant has a “Cook Your Own Catch” special. After a day of fishing, a successful fisherman can take advantage of the fish cleaning station and Latitudes will prepare your catch to your liking. You really cannot get much more local than that! Breakfast has never been easier on the weekends. Latitudes prepares morning favorites from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It’s yet another perfect time to be seated on the outdoor patio or upstairs deck. In the spirit of being a destination for food and fun, Latitudes features an indoor/outdoor full bar called the Pirate Dog Bar that is connected, but separate from the restaurant. It’s a great place to enjoy the televised football games and sip on one of the 10 beers on draft or a Happy Hour special served up by bartenders Stacey Preston or Tonya Cermeno. Order up a signature drink like the Pirate Dog (Corona beer and Absolut Limon,) the Longitude or Blue Lagoon (rum-based drinks,) or the Texas Sting Ray martini. There is live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday late afternoon. Various island music and party bands bring their good vibrations to Latitudes’ outdoor covered stage. Karaoke and poker are on Wednesday nights. Anyone can join. This month, Latitudes will be at Twisted Custom Cycles swap meet in Alvin on the September 15. The restaurant is the featured food vendor at the Boogie, Blues and Brews at Walter Hall Park in League City (September 21 through 23). And they are the final stop for the 6th annual L.I.P.S. Poker Run on September 29. Latitudes will also be participating in the Gritty Goddess obstacle mud course at Moody Gardens in Galveston in November. For further information on any of these events or to join the “Lady Latitudes with Attitudes” Gritty Goddess team, contact Latitudes’ General Manager Valerie Gallimore at valerieg@vosslerelectric.com. Whether it’s because of the daily lunch specials, the private pier with boat access, indoor/outdoor seating, or because it’s extremely friendly to bikers, golf carts, families, and dogs (to responsible pet owners), make Latitudes and the Pirate Dog Bar your getaway. It's well worth the “drive.” Your peaceful state of mind will thank you and so will your taste buds. For more information on catering or for directions, visit Latitudes’ website www.Latitudes29.com or call 281-339-1110.

NEWS & NOTES Making news this month are two fundraisers to help those in need. Check them out! – Betsey Ennis, Editor KICK IT!: The good folks at Cabo (Seabrook) have teamed up with other service industry professionals to fill the food pantry for Interfaith Caring Ministries. The main goal for the “KICK HUNGER” Food Drive and Kickball Tournament is to raise money and collect plenty of food to prepare our local food banks and charities for the upcoming holiday season. There will be a few different initiatives going on during September that they hope will amass a significant contribution. The first of these initiatives, the food drive, is the core of their efforts. The food drive commence in September and run through Sunday, October 7. A donation crate will be at each participant's location team ready to accept nonperishable foods. The grand finale is a Kickball Tournament is on Monday, October 8 at Clear Lake Park. Each team will compete in a single-elimination, bracket-style tournament beginning at noon with the awards ceremony to be held at 6 p.m. at Cabo in Seabrook. Price of admission to the park will be two canned good donations. Many local vendors and distributors are donating food, alcohol and services so all proceeds collected will be donated in full to Interfaith Caring Ministries. In addition, each participating venue will have three raffle items on display. The businesses will be selling raffle tickets for those items, and on the day of the kickball tournament, a winner for each item will be drawn at the closing ceremonies. Participating venues include Cabo, Hooters, Monkey Bar, Boondoggles, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack and Twin Peaks. HEART WARMING: Signature Bistro (1918 NASA Pkwy.), is holding a benefit dinner for Chef Brent Evans on Monday, September 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. Evans has undergone two emergency open heart surgeries this summer. The money raised from the benefit will go to help pay the mounting medical bills and day-to-day expenses Chef is incurring. Cost to attend is $20 per person and includes appetizers, penne Bolognese, baked fish in garlic herb butter, rosemary roasted red potatoes, summer vegetables, garlic bread and bread pudding dessert. Musical entertainment is being donated by David Schwope, Dalton Wheeler, Roger Wayne Bailey and Christine Kelly Gietzen. There will be a live auction, raffle and door prizes. “Being a small business, we cannot do much to help financially with all Chef Brent’s growing expenses,” said Melissa Baccus, coowner of Signature Bistro. “We’ve already seen generosity from customers giving monetary donations. We appreciate any help we can get from the community and our friends.” If you would like to donate auction or raffle items, please contact Melissa or Elizabeth at 281-474-4455 or by email at signaturebistro@gmail.com.

n o i s i V a e t a n i m u l l I s n i a r B Beauty and
After beating the cancer, Kotb decided to switch gears.
It’s been an amazing year for Miral Kotb.
Since placing third on “America’s Got Talent” last season, Kotb’s dance troupe, iLuminate, has performed professionally in Europe, Egypt, South Africa, Singapore, Canada, and various Six Flag venues, which has put Kotb already in the black. “I’m using the money to put toward my own show which I’ll be producing offBroadway, opening in New York over Thanksgiving and running through New Year’s,” says Kotb who was in town recently for a quick visit with family and friends. Born in Cairo, Kotb moved to the U.S. at the age of two and grew up in the Clear Lake area with one dream – to dance. She was in the drill team and took classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts before enrolling at Columbia University. While getting her degree in computer science, she continued to study dance and choreography in New York. After graduation and landing a job as a software engineer with Bloomberg, Kotb’s goal was to get some work experience under her belt and then go into dancing fulltime. But a cancer diagnosis changed her life – and her direction.
“I was freelancing and working on an iPhone application development,” says Kotb, “when I got the idea of wireless lights on dancers that could be controlled from the palm of my hand. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, but couldn’t explain it to anyone because it’s something you have to see, so it’s hard to explain. Even now when people see it live, they have that ‘awe’ moment.” The technology is a secret, but it’s basically wireless controlling of the costumes so that different body parts can be manipulated to create illusions. A patent is pending. The prototype only took a couple of months to design, but it took a year before the product was robust and stable. The first person to use it properly was Chris Brown as part of his Michael Jackson tribute on the BET Awards. “That’s when I knew, it was ready for showtime!” says Kotb. “We have two shows at Six Flags right now which are 20 minutes long and about 5,000 people a day see the show,” she says, “but the show in New York will be produced exclusively by us and run 60 minutes.”
The New York production is their very own investment and will be on their terms. “Often when you get involved with a producer, they can shift what you are doing, but we had a very clear vision of what we wanted,” says Kotb, “so, we are really excited about the Broadway show. We want to spread the word and have all seats sold out every night. With 200 seats and two performances, that’s 400 seats a night!” With each performance telling a story, Kotb says that the shows are truly an adventure. “The show at Six Flags is about a planet that gets invaded, with a princess captured and rescued,” she says. “We’re like any other performance that tells a story only we create our characters in the dark.” A memorable recent performance for iLuminate was on The Ellen Show. “It was great,” says Kotb who did get to meet Ellen DeGeneres and even made a jacket for her with “Ellen” on the back, that lit up in lights, of course. Other highlights of Kotb’s recent success include speaking at Google, not once, but twice; last year speaking at Google Zeitgeist and also performing live. “I spoke alongside Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin, and it was a real honor. He’s an artist/entrepreneur who comes up with interesting ideas and brings them to life in his own artistic way, which has made him successful. The second performance was a Google Science Fair for teenagers where I was able to inspire them to use their genius and be the best at what they do. I did something similar at a robotics conference where I received an award along with a Nobel Prize winner in physics. It gave me an opportunity to show how art and technology can come to life and inspire young kids,” she says. Kotb has other inventions in her head with new products coming out. “They are top secret but will definitely take us to a different level. It’s still performance art and wearable lighting, but with a different way of doing it. We invent everyday – internally – to make our product better, our costumes stronger, our set pieces, dances and illusions better. One new product will be out in a couple of months that will add to what we already do. It will showcase in our New York show.” Kotb handled the business end of iLuminate in the beginning, but now that she has a feel for where the company is headed, they’ve just signed with a manager and an agent, and hired a publicist. Kotb’s biggest goal: “To stay innovative and fresh and inspired. I’d like the company to keep growing, expand globally, have shows around the world and also be innovators in technology and art. Not just with the light suits but other innovations as well.” What’s next after New York? “We’re hoping to have a U.S. tour next spring, particularly a House of Blues tour, but we want to bring it to many cities due to our large fan base.” In her free time Kotb unwinds with massages and she loves to cook, but even in her down time, she dances. Kotb is the daughter of Magdy and Sonia Kotb, owners of Mediterraneo Restaurant in Nassau Bay. The New York show will premiere Thanksgiving weekend at the Duke Theatre in Manhattan. For more information go to iluminate.com. (Editorial Note: As we go to press the New York show now has a name: "The Artist of Light," iLuminate’s very first ticketed show!)

Abstract Expression

Featured Artist: Salli Babbitt
By Kelley Dawson
Artist Salli Babbitt’s works have been exhibited in diverse places from beer joints to Houston’s most upscale galleries to her newest studio located in sunny San Leon. Babbitt’s colorful and unique pieces reflect her vibrant personality. Babbitt began painting at the age of 6. While still in high school, she sold her first piece to one of Houston’s premiere interior designers, Paul Gainey. Babbitt taught at the Art League of Houston for 20 years and served on their board for 18 of those years. Babbitt also developed two outreach “healing art” programs and continues to donate much of her time and talents to helping others through art. Babbitt said she formally studied “abstract expressionist” in college. Her expertise in creating art as well as teaching it still lies within the realm of abstract using mixed media or acrylic and encaustic art. Encaustic art incorporates melted beeswax and pigments. Babbitt explained the abstract pieces begin with an emotional concept. “I consider myself a colorist,” she added. Babbitt said she starts each painting with a big pour of color, or pour of texture and “Then I look at it. Ingest it, and take it from there.” Her work is bright and intense with depth and multiple layered textures full of luminous complexities. Her abstract painting methods are the same in her classes. Babbitt stated some rules apply to break up the canvas, but much pouring is involved in the beginning. She said, “We use everything but a paint brush.” Recently, Babbitt has been constructing sculptures from found objects. She designs the pieces with resale shop novelties, shells, wire, bottle caps or even scrap metal bits she finds on the ground. Babbitt will teach a “found art class” at her studio

October 19. Babbitt is especially proud of her healing art classes for people with physical limitations and also her current philanthropic work with Galveston’s Bay Keeper Foundation. Babbitt has been surfing since the early 1970s and believes in helping keep Galveston’s bay and beaches clean. She has donated several of her paintings to the Foundation and countless others in Houston and the Bay Area. Babbitt hosts quarterly art shows and teaches both locally at her studio and in Houston’s Midtown area. Her next encaustic demo will be held November 17 at Texas Art Supply’s Baybrook location. Margaritas and Salsa! Ole! On Saturday, October 13, Discovery Green will be the place to be for all lovers of Margaritas and salsa dancing from noon until 10 p.m. for the inaugural Houston Margarita Festival. “A lot of people love margaritas, making it the number one mixed beverage in the area. We felt a festival centered on that fact would be fun, and well supported,” said Event Coordinator Jay Proctor. “The Houston Margarita Festival highlights a variety of great margaritas, but that's not all. We've made it a point to have great bands, great food, and salsa dancing to make it even better.” While a salsa competition takes place on the main stage, a secondary acoustic stage will feature local singer-songwriters. The winning couple for the salsa competition will receive $500. (Professional salsa dancers are not allowed to participate in this competition.) There will also be a limbo competition. “The Houston Margarita Festival will be a wonderful event with great salsa dancing and margaritas at the beautiful Discovery Green Park in downtown Houston. Festival goers will have a great time whether participating or watching the salsa dance competition,” said Houston Margarita Festival salsa host Salsa Eddy. The day’s entertainment includes: Mambo Jazz Kings, Texas Brass Band, Salmerum, Tony Henry, The Marc Borde Trio, Step Rideau and Zydeco Outlaws, Cass, Mango Punch, MB Flow, Espantapajaros and more. Salon Avante celebrates third year, continues to give back By Rae Drady
Boys and Girls Harbor a couple years ago, “One of our stylists told me about the Boys and Girls Harbour here in La Porte. I introduced myself as I donated some clothes, and then asked who cut the kids’ hair. Upon finding out the kids pay for their cuts out of their allowance money, I came back to Brenda and told her.”
Salon Avante, located at 11001 West Fairmont Parkway, is not your every day, ordinary salon. Not only have they been providing pampering to La Porte for three years, but they are also a business that goes above and beyond to help in their surrounding community.
Right then and there, they decided to change that. So now they provide free haircuts for the kids so they can save the little allowance for other things. “It is truly a great feeling to help others,” Melissa said.
August was an exciting month for Salon Avante. Manager Brenda Olivarez took her training to the next level and is now an official Redken Artist. She graduated from Redken’s exclusive training program on August 22. On August 25, Salon Avante celebrated their three-year anniversary with a Manhattan-themed mini hair show. Despite their hectic August schedules, they took time out to give free “back-to-school” haircuts to the children at the Boys and Girls Harbor in La Porte. Olivarez said, “We serve in the community because it is our heart. The Boys and Girls Harbor is special to me. We give them free haircuts throughout the year, but we knock out all 65 children in one day for back to school.”
Each year on November 1, Salon Avante also hosts a toy drive for the children. Then in December they throw a Christmas party for them and distribute the gifts. “I am very proud to be part of Salon Avante with my mom, dad, sister, and our entire Salon Avante family.” Another organization dear to their hearts is the Bridge over Troubled Waters. (The Bridge assists survivors of domestic and/sexual violence and those who are homeless due to these circumstances.) “When the ladies have job interviews, they come in, and we pamper them with a free haircut and style. If you could only see their faces when we are done – you would have thought we gave them a million dollars,” Melissa said. “It’s a small gesture that we do, but to these women, it means a lot to them.”
Olivarez’ sister and assistant manager Melissa Rodriguez explained, “When the salon was opened by our parents, Jose and Gloria Olivarez, it was with the intent that we would to give back to our community.”
Of her recent graduation, Olivarez said, “Becoming a Redken Artist was a life long dream. What I do is a passion, so I am ready to share it with the world.” Sharing of their talents with the world seems to be second-nature to the team at this salon.
Melissa explained how Salon Avante began working with the
Book Release: Oleanders of San Leon Local musician turned author Andy Upchurch recently released a book named “The Oleanders of San Leon.” The book is about the adventures of a sailor and musician who one day decides to move ashore and build a house – without any experience.
houses have names instead of street numbers. It was named this because of all the wild oleander bushes found growing there.
Building a little house is merely the premise of the book. The book is filled with comical moments, and is interspersed with stories, snippets, and a yarn or two. They range in topic anywhere from living on a sailboat and playing music in Las Vegas to running from a hurricane, and traveling to various exotic ports of call. One of the zany adventures is about riding a jet ski from Galveston all the way to Lake Charles, Louisiana. These tales are all loosely related to, and have something to do with, how the Oleanders of San Leon came to be. The book is written in a humorously to make the reader smile, if not laugh out loud in places.
Upchurch is a local musician with the popular local band, Andy and the Dreamsicles. The book may be purchased at any Dreamsicles event.
The author’s background includes computers, music and sailing. But Upchurch says his book projects a message of hope and encouragement, that when an ordinary person sets a goal that seems out-ofreach, they can accomplish it. For those who have thought about do something you thought you couldn’t, the author hopes you find inspiration in The Oleanders of San Leon. The house and the land on which it occupies are known as the Oleanders, named in the style of smaller Caribbean islands, where the

Set some S.M.A.R.T. goals! By Rick Hunter Howdy y'all and welcome to my first health and fitness column for The SCENE! So, let's say you work out several days a week, eat like a monk (minus a few adult beverages or enchiladas), and still can't seem get right where you want to be fitness-wise. A common mistake that very intelligent people make is that they forget to be S.M.A.R.T when it comes to goal setting. Working out without any goals is like using GPS without a destination – sure you're on the road, but you don't know where you're going. S.M.A.R.T. is the acronym many fitness professionals use to establish goals with their clientele. It stands for Subjective, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. So often when I take on a new client the extent of their goal is to “tone up.” After explaining that tone is a value related to sound, not a smoking hot body, I still get the deer-in-the-headlights look until I explain the S.M.A.R.T. principle for goal setting. Subjective merely refers to why it's important to you to hit this goal. It's completely subjective to say, “I want to look good nekkid!” Measurable means I can put a number to it, “I want to lose 3 inches from my waist.” Attainable is a tough one, but with common sense, it comes around. I'm not going to get a woman's hips down to an 18 inch circumference. Those pesky bones keep getting in the way, which leads into the next step: Realistic. If you want to look like Sylvester Stallone in three 20minute workouts per week on your Total Gym, you just aren't being realistic! Timely gives you a framework to complete the goal in. We are not going to get 50 pounds off you by this weekend. By putting these pieces together you'll have a good, solid goal to work toward, and it will give your workouts a direction. Some of the best goals have several short term goals building up to a long term goal. Remember that with fitness, you will feel a difference in 4 weeks, see a difference in yourself in 8 weeks; others will notice the difference in you in 12 weeks. So try to set your goals at least 90 days out to be realistic. One last thing to remember, if you find that you have a hard time reaching your goals, try a different approach! Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is a classic definition of insanity. Try consulting a professional or changing your program completely. Even something simple like working out at a different time of day can spark a profound change in your physique! Now, GET IN THE GYM! ----------------------------------------------Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence
of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival September 28, 29 & 30 • Johnson Space Center Balloon Festival Gives Houston “Edu-tainment” on the Cheap RE/MAX of Texas and the City of Nassau Bay have collaborated once again to bring Houston one of the most exciting and affordable outdoor events this year, combining family entertainment and education all in one. The RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival at NASA Johnson Space Center celebrating mankind’s fascination with flight kicks off Sept. 28-30 and is the only event of its kind in the greater Houston area that features hot air balloons. “No matter what economic conditions, parents still want their children to be entertained and educated at the same time, without it costing an arm and a leg,” said Festival Co-Founder Steve Lombardi. “The RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival scores on all three of these points.” The festival’s mission to inspire interest in science and mathematics through aeronautic displays and attractions has been a mainstay now for 19 years. There are many favorite attractions on the schedule, including hot air balloon competitions, evening glows, sky divers and a NASA Open House. The RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival, presented by the City of Nassau Bay, is produced by hundreds of Clear Lake-area volunteers in conjunction with a Board of Directors comprised of various community leaders. The event opens Friday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. with festivities continuing throughout the weekend. Family-friendly pricing of just $10 per carload, when bought online, includes Saturday’s NASA Open House, a balloon competition called “Shuttle Rendezvous,” sky divers and other air sport activities. For the first time half-price tickets will be sold online for $10 per vehicle; at-the-gate admission is just $20 per vehicle, including free on-site parking at Johnson Space Center. Vendors contact sunny@clearlakearea.com; festival volunteers contact shari@clearlakearea.com and for the festival schedule and more information, visit www.ballunarfestival.com.
JSC will host an Open House during the festival on Saturday, Sept. 29.
Ballunar Liftoff Festival, Inc. makes a difference The Ballunar Liftoff Festival is produced by a non-profit organization that is focused on ensuring that school-age children’s pursuit of discovery bolsters their interest in math and science. Grants to the Manned Space Flight Education Foundation benefit students across the Houston metropolitan area by supporting field trips to the Johnson Space Center and its museum, Space Center Houston. Students participate in hands-on interactive activities including seeing the inside of a space shuttle, learning about the controls in the flight deck, simulations of operating robots on Mars and how astronauts must prepare for the physical limitations of living in space. A Houston tradition, the non-profit RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival sprouted wings in 1993 and is now a hallmark event that encourages young people’s interest in math and science through the study of aeronautics. Nassau Bay, the traditional hometown for the engineers and pilots who pioneered America’s space exploration, has given partnership support in bringing the festival to an ever-wider audience of families. Saturday’s expanded NASA Open House is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to astronaut training facilities and a mock-up of the ISS, new displays will reveal the next generation of vehicles currently in development.

ALLEN MATHESON
JOHN ENNIS
CLIFTON GRIM
CLIFF MEINHARDT
Matheson: “Early in the morning, watch for balloon teams driving near the main JSC entrance with their trailers in tow, and follow them out to the launch site. Also, unless you're going for a silhouette, attempt to shoot with the sun at your back.” Ennis: “Instead of waiting for the balloons to reach the festival grounds, follow the balloon teams out to the launch site and take pictures of the process leading up to the launch and the launch itself.” Grim: “Understand the schedules and what is going to go on. The Saturday morning launch gives you an opportunity to photograph set ups and launches from very close. The Friday evening glow is the other great photo opportunity. Meinhardt: “Don't just think about big balloons. From a photographic point of view it can also be abstract colors, lines and shapes, it can be people, it can be action, and look at it from different angles, get up close, get down low, its a great place and a great subject to experiment with.”
On the Water 3rd ANNUAL J/FEST SOUTHWEST SLATED FOR OCT. 13-14 J/Fest Southwest Committee Chairman Al Goethe has announced that Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) will be hosting its 3rd Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta on Sat., Oct. 13 and Sun., Oct. 14. It is open to the public and all races will be held on Galveston Bay. J/Fest regattas have been held for over 27 years in Annapolis, San Diego, San Francisco, New Orleans and Seattle. The focus of the J/Fest is to give J/Boat racers a chance to compete in one-design races. “Our J/Fest Southwest will be another great opportunity for Lakewood to promote and support a national caliber event,” remarked Goethe. The overall theme of our J/Fest Regatta is to provide a venue that is all inclusive to J/Boat owners, their family, and friends. While the racers are on the water, their spouses, children, and friends can enjoy a myriad of activities and tourist attractions in and around the Bay Area Houston arena. Goodie bags for skippers will contain coupons for family fun. “Since Seabrook is the title sponsor for our regatta, we hope that visiting racers will book their accommodations at our fine Seabrook motels,” add LYC Fleet Captain Joyce Maxwell. J/Boats Southwest, headquartered in Austin, is inviting J/Boat owners from all over the nation to bring their J/Boats to Seabrook and to participate in all the fall/winter sailing at J/Fest Southwest and other local regattas. One design fleets slated for the J/Fest Southwest Regatta include J/22, J/24, J/80, J/105, and the J/109. It will be a circuit stop for the J/22, 24, 105, and 109 classes. Race tracking will be available to the one-design classes and can be observed live on large screen TV’s in the club house. The pre-regatta Skippers’ Meeting will be held in the ballroom of LYC on the evening of Fri., Oct. 12, 6:30 pm for check-in, meeting, and refreshments. A pool party and dinner are planned after the races on Sat. The Awards Ceremony will take place on Sun., Oct. 14, after the races.

Signquick Opens Second Location Signquick has provided custom signage and graphics to area businesses since 1999. In August, this Seabrookbased business opened a second location in Webster at 400 W. Bay Area Blvd. (near the Gulf Freeway). “We had numerous customer requests to be more central in the Bay Area,” said Larry Bouley, Signquick’s president, about the family-owned company’s expansion. “Our new location provides the same level of reliability, personal service, and expert consultation our customers have expected and received during our many years in business.” Signquick’s knowledgeable staff can navigate their clients through the extensive product list to choose what is right for them in the most cost-effective way. “Let our business help your business,” said his wife Lisa Bouley. “We want to work directly with our customers in making the right product choices to make their business succeed.” The company manufactures in-house a wide variety of custom
signage and vehicle graphics. They also sell business and promotional items (business cards, promotional products, and promotional apparel) for a multitude of applications. Their graphics department uses the latest computer-aided equipment to customize vehicle wraps, trade show displays, wall wraps and company banners. Cutting edge technology and creative design also produce decals, vinyl lettering, magnetic signs, lobby signs, safety signs, yard signs, and site signs. Outdoor sign frames are made from a quality composite material and are durable. Signquick even offers area realtors the convenience of having many realty companies’ design templates already available. “Another popular item in the area is custom boat lettering and name design,” said Larry. “We can do the installation, or give the finished product ready for the customer to install.” All of the services and products are offered with a personal touch. The Bouleys are active owners and interact daily with their customers in the design and ordering process. They are passionate about Signquick’s commitment to customer satisfaction. Larry graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a marketing degree and has been in the industry ever since. He and Lisa owned a promotional items company and merged it with Signquick in 2004. The Bouleys’ son Jackson can even be found at one of the offices when not in school. Signquick’s comprehensive website (www.signquick.com) utilizes an online design tool that is very user friendly. Customers unable to visit the Seabrook or Webster locations can opt to place and purchase their orders over the web and have it shipped to their front door. Signquick has the expertise and knowledge to assist any business with their marketing and the materials they need to promote their business no matter the industry.

Hank 3 @ Scout Bar
from Page 51
TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE It seems like yesterday when we caught Alice Cooper’s “Welcome To My Nightmare” tour and the hit song was “School’s Out.” Fast forward, and we are at the Hank 3 show at Scout Bar only this time, school’s in... And WOW, does Hank get it across. The packed house this evening was equally split between the nations of country, rock and alternative and only a place like Scout Bar can pull off this kind of show. Sing-alongs during the country set had full participation, mosh pit action was therapeutic, and *then* came the video/jam lessons... Hank’s videos run for an entire set and are the most comprehensive massive assault on the brain on this planet. In the fewest words possible, they are rarely seen clips of cold war history, western hemisphere dogma, science (actual and fiction), marketing fads and spoofs, industrial-military complexity, backfired public affairs, trivial values, pivotal global events, religion, hoodoo, and cartoons – Not your typical dinner conversation. We may not have gotten it when Alice let us out of class, but we got it this time with Hank on the stage. And just to be sure we got it, next time Hank 3 comes to the area, we’ll be there. And *that* folks is Tour Stop Clear Lake!

SIX GUN SOUND
The mellow track with a few well-placed growling vocals “Love From Gravity” began to take shape after Rardin was “free styling” at practice. “The guys fell in behind me and literally 10 minutes later, we had written what is probably our favorite track on the album,” he says.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 64 The Territo brothers had been making music together for so long that whenever they tried to add another member, it just didn’t work out. Then Joe Rardin urged his son Cory to tryout. He knew Cory would fit the “talented and down to earth” description that the Territo brothers wanted to find. “I think the first songs we played were ‘Keep Away’ & ‘Bad Religion’ by Godsmack.” Cory said. We looked around at each other and nodded in approval. At that time Vinnie asked me to join the band.” The rest, they say, is history. Six Gun Sound has been nominated for multiple Texas Buzz awards, performed at House of Blues Houston, headlined the Texas Buzz show, and shared the stage locally and regionally with Rehab, The Hunger, Hell Yeah, and, later this month, Saliva, and in November with In This Moment. Recently, the band released their debut self-titled CD. It was originally recorded at SGS Studios and mixed and mastered by Kevin Bomar of Final Stage. “After Kevin’s magic touch, the album became what it was meant to be,” said Bobby. The CD contains a dozen tracks that catch your attention. The first track, as well as first single, is “You Know Where We Came From.” The rowdy anthem has become the battle cry for the Bay Area, and I absolutely love how it starts out. “This song was meant to be our introduction and we use it to let people know what to expect from us. Right off the bat, we establish that!” said Vinnie. The band also shot a video for this song with HD Publications and featured some of the hottest women in Clear Lake. Watch it on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/sixgunsound.) “We wanted to make a song that hits you hard, then harder, and then lands to K.O.” said Bobby, in reference to the searing track “Not Satisfied.”
“Sold Down River” was written the day after “Love from Gravity” and Vinnie explains, “We were in some kind of zone and the flood gates were open all the way at this point.” Bobby was so passionate about achieving the perfect guitar solo that it took over eight hours to get it just right. “Over 60 takes on a 45 second piece of music, you know you’ve got to want it!” said Vinnie. The first song that we actually sat down and worked piece by piece with Kevin Bomar was “Something In The Way.” Rardin said, “It absolutely set the pace and the bar for the rest of the album.” The only cover to make the CD is Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” Rumor has it that Cash’s son John Carter Cash said this is the best cover he has ever heard of his Daddy’s song. Other songs to note are my personal favorites “Where The Moss Don’t Grow,” “Wonder,” and the blues laden "Filthy Breed." I just love the composition of these songs. The last track “Just For Now” shows off their acoustic talent. Overall, Six Gun Sound’s debut is everything I have come to expect from the band. It sounds very professional with timeless songs and relevant lyrics that run the gamut of party songs to dealing with everyday emotion. It was well thought out and executed. Get your copy at a show, iTunes or any other major digital retailer. For more on Six Gun Sound, visit their new website www.sixgunsound.net.

BIG BEN TAVERN PREPARES TO HOST STATE SWIMSUIT FINALS Kitchen offers menu with international appeal daily By Rhonda Meredith Dozens of the most beautiful women in Texas will be at Big Ben Tavern in October. There's nothing too shocking about that statement since dozens of the most beautiful women in Texas are at Big Ben Tavern on any given day of the week. The difference this time is that in October, these women will be competing for a title and an all expense paid trip to the Mayan Riviera. The Houston-based Swimsuit USA International Model Search estimates that approximately 20,000 women from around the world enter model searches each year in hopes of advancing to the Swimsuit USA International Finals. It’s one of the largest and most prestigious model searches in the world and Big Ben Tavern will be hosting the Texas Finals on Saturday, October 20. A meet and greet will be on the Friday evening preceding this event. Mark your calendars now because it’s a big deal and expected to draw a very large crowd. It’s been a good year for Big Ben Tavern. The neighborhood pub celebrated their one-year anniversary last March by unveiling a new menu which quickly received rave reviews from its patrons. Big Ben Tavern serves up authentic British dishes such as Fish-nChips, Scotch Eggs, Cottage Pie, Bangers-nMash, and the popular English breakfast that consists of two eggs, sausage, English baked beans, and potatoes. Also scattered among the menu are classic American dishes and some that have a definitive twist. In addition to the Big Ben Burger and Deep Fried Cheeseburger, Big Ben Tavern expanded their burger offerings to include the Elvis Burger with peanut butter and bacon, the Asian influenced Shogun, Frito Pie, Pub Burger, Black and Blue, and the Italian inspired Pizziola. Aside from those succulent choices, Big

Ben Tavern has a wide range of entrees like shrimp tacos, tagliatelle pasta, and jacket potatoes with creative toppings. The “Starters” on the menu feature an interesting mix of cultural influences and represent a culinary diversity. Order calamari, fried dumplings, bacon wrapped shrimp, edamamae, wings, nachos, and sliders. Everything served at Big Ben Tavern is in a relaxed atmosphere of beer, spirits and a cheery staff. To start the week out right and celebrate the return of Monday Night Football, that night’s specials are $2 wells, $2 pints, $3 shots, and $2 tacos. On Tuesday nights, the mainstay $2 Big Ass 20-ounce domestic beers and your choice of a ribeye or filet for only $8 (includes loaded cheddar mashed potatoes) is served until midnight. Live music starts at 10 p.m. Big Ben Tavern also has live entertainment on the weekend too. For fun inside, there is pool tables, darts and arcade games. Outside, the back patio area is a great place to hang out and hosts a fully stocked bar. Big Ben Tavern is located at 20237 Gulf Freeway in Webster. They open at 4 p.m. every day with the exception of Sunday and on that day, the pub opens earlier for sporting games to be shown over the many large screen TVs.

NEW TIME & NEW WEBSITE For the Bay Area Bluegrass Association now getting together on the 3rd Saturday of each month. While they still call themselves BABA, they’ve a new url (www.bayareabluegrass.org) for all their latest. We caught up with them as they were hosting their association’s annual Texas State Mandolin championships. Bluegrass lovers tend to have lots of common sense and taking it inside the comfortable Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center during the dogs days of summer is a cool idea. Typical attendance at these gatherings consistently averages in the several of hundreds confirming bluegrass as a community pillar stone musical event. Makes sense reckoning how long bluegrass has been around. Come to your senses and take in a Bay Area Bluegrass evening as a listener or a jammer. It’s a free show, and your Bay Area Bluegrass Association senses will thank you! Bay Area Bluegrass Association
THE COOLEST DRINK Slide Effect ON THE PLANET AND THE @ La Brisa GROOVE - We’ve found it this summer; La Brisa has it; and it’s their frozen Mojito. There… The secret is out! This fine concoction is mighty fine on a hot summer day and was even better when we caught up with Slide Effect, no doubt one of the busiest bands in the area. This evening, brought on another cool treat with Benny Brasket on vocals/bass emerging from the Bacliff scene and joining up with the core of Patrick Henry Beadles, Lynn Raggio and C.J. Philpot (harp, lead & drums). It’s no secret amongst club owners that Slide Effect brings the fine hot ladies out to the dance floor with ease. More telling is how Slide Effect smooth and effortlessly @ La Brisa Slide Effect connects with the most discriminating of music critics, the after dinner stream of younger tots shorter than forty inches. You've seen who we're talking about. Next time out, watch them and see if they're simply burning off their desert or into the music the way they do at a Slide Effect show. Short of giving children music lessons, perhaps this is how music *should* be passed along from old to young? Whatever it be, Slide Effect does it for music lovers of all ages. Just mentioning... New Club & Pub Report
Taste the Rainbow at Club Pride By Rae Drady Club Pride is bringing a unique brand of party atmosphere to the Clear Lake area. Located at 229 NASA Parkway, this club originally opened its doors this summer as a “BYOB” bar, but now has their TABC license. “I enjoy managing Club Pride because I love showing our guests a good time,” said Manger Crystal Knox. “We believe in running an establishment that is welcoming to all. Yes, we are a LGBT bar, but we have a diverse crowd that comes in to participate in the festivities.” Knox is the first to admit you will likely catch her leading a train of happy people into the enormous dance cage in the center of the trendy dance club. The dance floor is framed with red faux leather sofas, flanked by three separate VIP lounges which can be reserved for private parties. The walls are adorned with ornate mirrors, elegant chandeliers and flat panel TVs (ready for slide shows or logo display). Knox said her favorite feature in the club (in addition to the center stage dance cage) is the laser lights and fog system. According to Knox, Carrie Davenport (former owner of Eden, Adam Eden 2 and Evo Lounge) came up with the idea for Club Pride because she and her Clear Lake area friends were tired of driving to Evo in downtown Houston, so Davenport brought a lesbian, gay club back to the Clear Lake area. Club Pride features a different theme each night Wednesday through Saturday during the week as well as daily shot specials. Mama Cass Karaoke and dance is on Wednesdays; then there is Two-Step Thursdays, Forbidden Fridays, and Taste the Rainbow Saturdays. There is no cover Wednesday or Thursday, but weekends, there is a $5 cover when the dance beats are hosted by DJ Que with Top 40 dance music. (Hip-Hop is also in the mix on Fridays.) Knox said the club is currently planning a variety of events and shows in the near future; so stay tuned to the SCENE for details. “We have an incredible staff, starting at the front door with Tony’s amazing and welcoming smile,” said Knox. “We have the most fun, entertaining and good-looking bartenders: Abbi, Guns and Jackie. Plus, DJ Que is Club Pride’s very own, up-andcoming talent.” The bottom line is that the management and staff at Club Pride have a passion about what they do and when guests walk in the door, they are truly glad you are there and want to make sure you have a great time in an upscale, classy atmosphere. If you are in search of a place to dance the night away, be sure to check them out. For more information, visit www.ClubPrideHouston.com. Club Pride is a 21 and older only establishment.

the scene’s martini madness TROPICAL – Japan, Italy, Mexico, and the USA are all represented in one drink. It’s a cultural revolution when the sweet, fruity taste of Japan’s Midori liqueur unites with Italy’s Skyy vodka to be their country’s ambassadors at La Brisa. Any seafood item on the Mexican restaurant’s menu will complement this martini, but the fish tacos are beyond amazing. What sets this drink apart is the mango puree and cherry garnish. Drink responsibly in the USA. CHOCOLATE – I swear this martini tastes like Borden’s chocolate milk, but it’s for the grown-ups! This sinfully delicious dessert drink can be savored alone, with a bite of flan, or even a slice of tres leches cake. Hershey’s chocolate syrup is drizzled into a glass and prepares a proper place for the vanilla flavored UV Cake vodka and cream to become one. It’s a spiritual thing really. No really, it is. Both are considered spirits. This drink is stirred, not shaken. MEXICAN – This flagship martini starts with the exceptionally smooth and complex flavors of Don Julio Silver. The handcrafted 100% blue agave tequila is shaken with Cointreau’s orange flavored liqueur. Add a splash of lime juice, a lime garnish, and enjoy. The Mexican martini is the margarita’s doppelganger. Pair a few of these with La Brisa’s sizzling fajitas. Say "OLE!"

Men of Steel @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
ALL ROUND GOLD - Hauling in the gold medals this summer has to include Jackie’s Brickhouse. Ever tweaking the dials for best all-round local entertainment, these folks pulled off their usual including their 2nd Mid-Summer Luau complete with limbo, hula, and fire last month. Never the bashful one, Jackie and the staff packed the house even tighter, dressed the theme, and pulled off a doozie with the International Men of Steel coming to town – the likes of which falls into the “never before” in this neck of the woods. This was *clearly* Ladies night at the Brickhouse to the level we’ll have to research the record books for the maximum moxie entertainment category. Folks, I’ve simply no idea how the folks at Jackie’s will ever top what they’ve pulled off this summer but then again, we said the same thing last year. London had the opening and closing ceremonies at their all ’round venue this month, and we have Jackie’s Brickhouse!
PRESEASON PICKS Ever notice how champs are often amongst those consistently in the hunt? We've been following live music at the Cockeyed Seagull awhile as well as female lead guitarist Starr Jernigan and this month caught Starr’s own band for the first time at the Seagull. Holy moly! Folks, there’s lots of good live music happening out there these days as usual. For now, Starr’s band (with Myrna Sanders riding bass, Jason Padilla from La Porte on drums, Clint Glaze on the keys, and a vocal mic in front of each), has to be the bestest crispest sharpest local Rock and Roll band on The SCENE. Watch for them! Starr Jernigan Band @ CockEyed Seagull

In the same league of consistently good, we stopped by TBone Tom’s and an evening with Sheila Marshall. Watching Sheila at T-Bone’s is interesting. During breaks, she mingles with the audience (as most musicians should), but then often ducks away for a few minutes scribbling out lyrics in her spiral notebook to some new song you’ll hear in the next set. And if *fresh* isn’t good enough, her band is tight enough get these new ditties, breaks and turnarounds included. Need proof? Watch the dancers. They never lose step. A throw down like this isn’t often seen and perhaps the last area band best at it was the Cow Blues Brothers – and that was at least a couple years ago. These days, the Sheila Marshall group has it...

The Blaggards @ Union Tavern
Loose Notes by Andy Eng
LOOSE NOTES - Like the Olympics, August’s live music SCENE was pretty much gold wherever we stopped. Makes sense as we find our stops, just like you, by reading the SCENE. Cheers to the musicians who gave it their all playing for all and getting better, too! Cheers to those who got a chance to enjoy it all. Leading with a fast start off the blocks this month was a solid dose of...
STOUT IRISH ROCK - And Union Tavern was the place to catch Blaggards (pronounced BLA’ GUARDS or BLA’ GHERDS, depending on where you’re from). Performing at a tempo akin to a Mama Tried or Come See My Dead Person show, the Blaggards plays traditional Irish music mixed with rock n’ roll, flavored with everything from Johnny Cash and Elvis PresThe Blaggards@ Union Tavern ley to Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath. Joining the original quartet of vocalists Patrick Devlin (guitar), Chad Smalley (bass), plus fiddler Brandi Belle Clarke, and drummer Michael McAloon was their new guitarist and mandolinist Bryce Clarke. These dedicated full time musicians maintain a rigorous schedule, playing constantly throughout Texas, touring nationally, plus annual trips to Ireland. We like this band in the lead-off position. Shifting gears... CENTER OF GRAVITY - Which would be Mainly Drinks for their 1st year anniversary celebrations. This former 1930s ice cream parlor gathering spot comes to life again with “great music and great food.” On this anniversary month, we caught the Moondog Duet of David Hargrave and Danny Douglass for an evening of the obscure classic covers (that would be Americana Classic Pop Rock and a splash of Spaghetti Western) with a classical flamenco twist for good measure – The tasty stuff that

nobody else is able to Freddie Krc @ Mainly play. If that weren’t Drinks enough, this month brought the return of local music hero, Freddy Krc to a packed standing room house (see the August SCENE for the skinny on this gracious musical giant). In terms of musical geography, we all know all along the Texas Gulf of Mexico comes a music of gritty integrity and at the center of this origin is La Porte. Mark that on your map. And while you’ve got your marker out... Hank Wolff MARK YOUR CALENDAR For September 17 at Signature Bistro. @ Signature Bistro Chef Brent Evans has recently undergone two emergency open heart surgeries which has kept him away from preparing delicious meals at Signature Bistro. A benefit is going down for this 32-year-old cancer survivor. We’ll be there along with musicians David Schwope, Dalton Wheeler, Roger Wayne Bailey, Christine Kelly Gietzen and many others. Be well, be generous, and be there! While on the topic of music and Signature Bistro, we dropped by this month for Cerebelus @ follow-ups with Cerebelus Signature and Hank Wolff & Friends. Bistro The last time we caught Cerebelus was our first time, and we were taken with their soulful (with a punchy edge) R&B. The duo of Armando Vazquez Jr. and Rachel Naomi Walker has a distinct way of making music and the Signature Bistro is perhaps the perfect place to hear “their sound.”
Local SCENE music lovers have been catching more of Hank Wolff this year. We find Hank’s ability to interpret Classics into something new very refreshing. Try out Hank Wolff and Cerebelus when you get the chance. Your ears will love you! - Continued on Page 57

Born from Ruins Friday, Sept. 28
You Will Know Where They Came From
UNION TAVERN
By Rhonda Meredith It was a year ago that Six Gun Sound was featured in The SCENE Magazine. The musical trio of brothers Vinnie and Bobbie Territo and Cory Rardin showed the dedication and talent that it takes to succeed and truly carve out a meaningful career in this tough industry. At that time, the band had just begun booking performances at area venues like Union Tavern and Scout Bar. “Six Gun Sound was never meant to be anything else besides a kick ass heavy rock band, and we feel we have stayed true to that persona with determination,” says Vinnie Territo (drums, vocals.) “Six Gun Sound wasn't just some band that we put together in our free time.”
Saliva Saturday, Sept. 29 SCOUT BAR
Truly it wasn’t. Their fathers Robert Territo and Joe Rardin were longtime best friends and performed in bands together when they were younger. “It's something that has been etched in stone years before we were even born. We literally grew up together,” said Vinnie. Bobby Territo (guitars, vocals) quickly interjects, “It's like you’ve got your Power Rangers in make-believe time and we had Ozzy Osboume and Van Halen. My brother and I knew we were meant to play together from square one.” - Continued on Page 47
