The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series Chef Michael Brewer Owner of Main St Bistro 615 E. Main St., League City 281-332-8800 Background / Experience: Michael Brewer began his restaurant career more than 14 years ago working for the Sicilian Grill in Clear Lake Shores. Michael has had a lifelong love of food, influenced first by his mother and family’s passion for good food. After finishing his basics at Texas Tech University, Michael graduated from the Art Institute of Houston as a Certified Executive Chef. He also spent time at the University of Houston learning Hotel and Restaurant Management. Michael has worked his way up through all the positions within a kitchen, such as, dishwasher, waiter, prep cook, sauté cook, kitchen manager, sous chef, executive chef and now restaurant owner. Michael has also had various catering experiences with weddings, parties, and events. From 2005 to 2010, he worked at Lakewood Yacht Club as prep cook, sauté cook, kitchen manager, and sous chef. While working at Lakewood, he had the opportunity to prepare the menu for the annual Keels and Wheels Concours d’Elegance where he met and cooked for car icon Carroll Shelby. He was also a guest chef for Men Who Cook, Feast “Best of the Bay Area,” and Taste of Space held at Space Center Houston. Michael has also catered multiple wine tastings with restaurateurs, chefs, and businessmen in the Clear Lake area. Michael has a determination to serve fresh, quality food at a reasonable price.

Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Carol Shelby (racing legend and car designer). He had an interesting use of vocabulary. Every other word was "sh*t, hell, or damn." He was very nice and generous though.

Your Specialty: Plate presentation is extremely important to me. I thinks it's important to have a dish look as good as it tastes.

Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Use a cork when cooking Cephalopods. This technique tenderizes by breaking down the meat.

Signature Dish: Shrimp and Grits. A southern delicacy of cheesy grits topped with sautéed shrimp, bell pepper, onions, Andouille sausage, and spices with a silky creole sauce.

DAN’S PIZZA CO.

THE WAY PIZZA SHOULD BE! By Rhonda Meredith From Staten Island to the South Belt area to the Space City, “Dan The Pizza Man,” as he is affectionately known, loves to create “Houstonstyle” pizzas the Italian way. “All my life I have been around pizzas,” said Dan. “It is every boy’s childhood dream to grow up in a pizza shop.”

Of course, there are those people that will ask “Is that all you’ve got?” Oh no… it isn’t. Dan’s Pizza Co. proudly presents the Omnivore pizza and the Dan-o-Saurus. The Omnivore combines the Carnivore and Veggie Lovers pizza for a total of 14 toppings that weighs in at an amazing 9 pounds! The Dan-o-Saurus is a HUGE 30” pizza with your choice of toppings.

Dan’s Pizza Co. is located in Webster at 15148 Highway 3 in between Pineloch and El Dorado nestled within Sterling Knoll Plaza. The pizzeria was opened in 2009 with the mission to create a premium product at a good price.

Aside from his robust pizzas piled high with fresh toppings, Dan offers appetizers, calzones, stromboli, sandwiches, pastas, shrimp, salads, and wings. The wings are baked to perfection in the oven and there are 15 wing sauces to choose from. The Inferno sauce is the hottest one offered and should only be tried if you dare…

There is a distinct difference between the big chains and the independent pizzeria… and you can taste it. “Fresh ingredients are the key to making a quality pie or any other menu item,” said Dan. “And so is having the heart to want to serve great food, that keeps our customers coming back.” The family-owned and operated pizzeria features over 100 menu items. Pizza classics and gourmet recipes inspired by his Italian mother and grandmother are what Dan The Pizza Man is most synonymous with. “But there is more on the menu than just pies!” he said. Just as popular are his oven baked wings, specialty subs, homemade pastas, and fresh salads since they will also satisfy even the most discerning taste buds. Immediately after placing your order over the phone or in person, a chef begins to create your delectable dish that is crafted from dough that is made fresh daily from traditional recipes and topped with sauces that are made from scratch. “Our pizzas are the biggest and heaviest in the Bay Area,” said Dan. “Each pizza is piled high with fresh veggies.” For example, The Works pizza has 10 delicious toppings: pepperoni, ham, beef, sausage, onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, green olives, black olives, and extra cheese. The Ultimeat pizza also has 10 toppings with the focus on MEAT! The Pepperoni Amore pizza will win your heart for eternity with its triple pepperoni and double cheese! Other classic pizza and specialty flavors include the Maui Wowie, Cheeseburger, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Greek Hero, Philly Style, Taste of Mexico, Barbeque Amore, Dan’s Heart Stopper, Margherita, Healthy Heart, and many, many more.

THE SCENE

Rounding out the menu are the desserts and they are as enticing as the rest of the menu. Even if you can’t eat it after dinner, he says that their tiramisu, cheesecake, Chocolate Eruption, or Italian cream cake can satisfy a midnight sweets craving. The only thing bigger than the food flavors at Dan’s Pizza Co. are the special deals! They are as generous as the food portions. Dan's Pizza Co. is a full-service Italian restaurant, but if you can't make it out, they will deliver orders above $20 for free within their expansive delivery area which includes the local bars, to the South Belt area, to League City, and beyond. They are able to handle large groups and parties with notice. One of the best things about Dan’s Pizza Co. is Dan The Pizza Man himself. It’s actually a treat to go into the pizzeria and place your order. When he isn’t answering the phone and taking orders, cooking up some very flavorful dishes, or personally making a delivery, Dan is getting to know you – his customer. Dan is a family man who lives in the Bay Area. He feels “enthusiastic and blessed” to be sharing his food creations to the community… and beyond. “It has always been my calling and my love,” Dan said. “We are here to make our customers happy because we want them to keep them coming back. Dan's Pizza Co. makes pizza the way it's supposed to be!”

Dan’s Pizza Co. opens daily at 11:30 a.m.

SCENEfest!

Clear Lake Park: 5002 E. NASA Pkwy., Seabrook, TX 77586

SCENEfest Theme: TEXAS INDIE “A Showcase of the Creative Spirit of Independently-Owned Dining, Music, Art & Beer in the Waterfront Capital of Texas” On Thursday, October 18, 2012 (5 to 9 p.m.), Clear Lake Park’s Landolt Pavilion will be transformed into a celebration of the best of independently-owned dining, original music, local art, and Texas craft beer. Hosted by the locally and independently-owned SCENE Magazine, this event will embody their tradition of supporting and promoting local dining, events, non-profits, nightlife, live music and spirits in Houston’s most dynamic waterfront community. This event was created with SCENE readers and clients in mind to come together in a celebration of what the magazine's readers love: Food, local live music, art, adult beverages and being “seen out on The SCENE.” This is THE “After Work” event of the year! The band line up has been carefully thought out to include original, local artists who each make a statement within their genre providing a delightful treat to your sense of sound. Playing on the main stage are Cassette Tape, Mama Tried, The Last Hour and Six Gun Sound in what has been dubbed, the Texas Indie Music Showdown. Locally-shot Movie Looking for Dandelion Is Film Festival Finalist By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor When the finalists of the Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival were announced in September, the local made film Looking for Dandelion was one of the 28 finalists were chosen from 300 submitted films worldwide. The film finalists were shown on the big screen at Star Cinema Grill. Not only was Looking for Dandelion shot in the Bay Area, but it was written and directed by Nassau Bay resident, Dr. Vince Privitera. It's a story of a young woman with identity issues that results in renaming herself Dandelion. She is a genius in the morning, to the point of smarter than her college professor, and a whimsical self-made clown in the afternoon, delighting children around the boardwalk, and becomes missing until the night reveals her unlikely whereabouts. Her new friend QB is a simple man, but cares for her and starts a search to find his new friend and new life. Even though it is a drama, this film will make one laugh as well as bring a tear to the eye. This independent film was shot in Bay Area Houston with most scenes in Kemah, including, Palapas Bar, Shrimp Boat Captain, Kemah Bella Spa, Clear Creek Winery and the Kemah Boardwalk.

Many other local businesses and homes pitched in to help make this production, a true labor of love for the art of film making. The producers are Vince Privitera and Barbara Radmonovic. The cast consist of Vannessa Vasquez as Dandelion, Jeff Drager as QB, Omar Hajjar as Cosmo, Barbara Radmonovic as Dandelion’s Mother, Francis Dautreuil as Cosmo’s Henchman Frank, Domino Taylor as The Madam Serena, Judie Valentine as The Teacher, Mad Genomicist as the Security Guard and Gabrielle Dautreuil as The Girl on the Beach. Dozens of recognizable locals were extras and featured extras in the film. The editor and project manager is David O’Brient, Jr. and Angela Dautreuil is production assistant and hair/makeup/wardrobe. Anna Brodl was camera operator and music. If you missed the screening last month, there will be two screenings on Sunday, October 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Mediterraneo Market & Café (18033 Upper Bay Rd. in Nassau Bay). Looking for Dandelion has a total running time of 50 minutes. There is no admission to see the film. At this time there will be an announcement of the dates of open auditions for the next film produced by Mirror Productions, LLC. “This film would not have been made without all the incredible and dedicated talent that worked on this film. If you missed the finalist screening at the cinema during the film festival, come out to Mediterraneo Café on October 14 for a free viewing. If you did see it, come out again and visit with us,” said Director Privitera. Dr. Vince Privitera studied at the Dramatic Workshop in NYC. He has written and directed several plays and movies, two of which have been feature films, including If They Die and Witchfire starring Shelly Winters. Dr. Privitera, a psychiatrist, has a Masters Degree in Humanities with advanced studies in film and script writing. His other movies include, Coming Alive, Keep in Touch, A Raven at The Window, Lady in The Funhouse Mirror, The Empty Chair and The Disappointed Sniper. That’s another wrap!

Dorothy Weston Gibbons: Saving Precious Lives Co-Founder of THE ROSE making a serious impact By Sue Mayfield Geiger In Mary Oliver’s poem, “A Summer’s Day,” the poet asks in the last line: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Dorothy Weston Gibbons knew that somehow she would make the best use possible of her “one wild and precious life” by giving hope to other women so they could continue living their own precious lives. In 1985, Gibbons and Dr. Dixie Melillo co-founded The Rose, a nonprofit organization offering mammography services to all women—even the uninsured. Since that time, The Rose has grown to include two comprehensive diagnostic centers, a 30,000 sq ft building of their own and two mobile mammography vans. With a medical staff of three physicians who specialize in breast disease, over 90 employees and hundreds of volunteers, The Rose provides mammography screening, diagnostic ultrasounds and outpatient biopsies for all women, regardless of their ability to pay. Bone density testing, second opinions, patient navigation and social services are also available. Last year, The Rose provided 33,784 screening and diagnostic procedures for those able to pay; 19,369 screening and diagnostic procedures at no charge to low income, uninsured women; and 8,857 free patient navigation services to patients without insurance. Because of The Rose, thousands of women are now living lives that are not only precious but cancer free. October is Breast Health Awareness Month and a perfect time to introduce you to Dorothy Weston Gibbons: What was the trigger that got you started on this path? The trigger wasn’t a single moment, but many moments. Being around Dixie I was infused by her passion for caring for women who were diagnosed with breast cancer. She opened Breast Imaging Center at

THE SCENE

Pasadena Bayshore Hospital, and as the PR/Marketing Director, I was responsible for promoting this new service for women. I was also the hospital medical photographer, and took dozens of pictures of women with advanced breast cancer; nothing compared to the fear and sadness I saw in their eyes. When I was 20-years-old, I watched my own mother die in a charity hospital from cancer. She was uninsured and a single mother of four. I could imagine what would lie ahead for those families of the women I photographed. There wasn’t a place like The Rose for my Mama but maybe I could do something for the other Mamas of this world. How did you and Dr. Melillo get over the hump in those early years and bring attention to your cause? I’m not sure we have ever gotten over “the hump” because we still need a lot more people to know about The Rose and there is still a lot of information needed to eliminate the myths about breast cancer and who is at risk—which is every woman. We serve working women who earn too little to purchase insurance and too much to qualify for public supported health districts. In the early ’80s there were no pink ribbons and breast cancer wasn’t in the public eye; most women didn’t talk about it. Screening mammography was not covered by insurance and few places offered dedicated breast imaging. By the time a woman felt a lump, it was too late. During those early years, I arranged hundreds of community presentations—we were like a traveling show—me creating the slides, carrying the projector and cassette tray to the locations and Dixie explaining the importance of early detection. Women really got it after listening to her. Soon word of mouth spread and women told their doctors they wanted to go to The Rose. This month, we are launching the Me2 campaign—come have your mammogram, bring two friends and then make a “fun” day of it with lunch, coffee or a mani/pedi. Take that time to celebrate each other while taking care of you. For every three insured women who come to The rose, we are able to care for one uninsured woman, a concept we’ve stood behind for over 26 years. What’s a day in the life of Dorothy Weston Gibbons, CEO of The Rose, look like? It would be hard to choose: A day filled with hosting a site visit at one of the Centers and meeting local Foundation funding committees? Reviewing grants? Jumping out of an airplane to raise money? A morning of being interviewed by the local stations and that afternoon receiving a call from a terrified woman who has found a lump in her breast who has been told to call me? But a day of being with my employees—those are truly my favorite days, when we have our monthly staff meetings and announce our “Go Girl” awardees or during New Hire Orientation when it’s my pleas-

ure to take the new staff members to lunch and share our belief that they didn’t pick the Rose—The Rose picked them. Some days involve donning tennis shoes to walk in a race, a life jacket to help paddle a dragon boat with a support group or attend a Black Tie evening gala. Other days start with a 7:00 a.m. meeting and end with a 7 p.m. gathering. So many special days include stories full of tears, laugher, hope, love. My work is beyond explanation, touched by a sense of the Divine mixed with the hard reality of dealing with a life threatening disease each and every day. Tell us about some of the women who have been helped by The Rose and what their lives are like today. There’s Marian, who was uninsured and determined to pay back The Rose for saving her life. She founded “Jump for the Rose,” a skydiving event involving hundreds of women that set a national record last year by raising $14,000. Vicky says that breast cancer was an “adventure” allowing her to be of support to others. She has lived with metastatic breast cancer for eight years, long beyond the original predictions and has been one of our most compelling ambassadors. Over 13 years ago, Ida helped us organize the first ever Spanish-speaking breast cancer support group, which became Las Rosas Vivas and has outgrown our meeting space. Ana was the first woman to ever be diagnosed through our Young Women’s Clinic, and was able to be with her two young children for over five years. Her husband created “Ana’s Angels,” which helps breast cancer patients. We have served hundreds of thousands of women and diagnosed over 5000—from 19 to 97-years-old. Insured or uninsured, our job is to walk along side them on this journey. Breast cancer incident rates have declined since the inception of The Rose. Do you expect that figure to keep going down? Studies show a 33 percent lower mortality rate today than in the 1980s. More women are surviving and living longer than ever before. That success is directly attributed to the increased utilization of mammography screening and the availability of more advanced ef-

fective treatments. But sadly, despite overall trends, the mortality rates in African Americans continue to be 40 percent higher than in Caucasians. The sharpest rise in incident rates is seen in our Hispanic population. Young women, regardless of race, are the most medically underserved population we have and nationwide breast cancer is being diagnosed in more women under the age of 40 than ever before. Early detection is still our only hope and that translates to ensuring access to mammography for every woman. Obviously, The Rose adheres to the “servant leadership” philosophy. Can you tell me more about that? Being a servant leader means there are times we must stand alone and it can be a blessing not to be bound by the restrictions of large teaching medical facilities or under the governance of a national organization. Year after year we were diagnosing more and more women under 40, compelling us to find a solution which created the protocol driven “Young Women’s Clinic.” It is also why we believe so strongly that we must honor whatever treatment a woman chooses; she may opt for conservative surgery or determine a mastectomy is best for her. Our responsibility is to make sure she has that option. We also make sure she has a patient navigator to walk with her, educate her about those choices and be the voice for her when she can’t find her own. For an uninsured working woman, conservative surgery and having to take off work every day for six weeks of radiation may not be an option. The Rose was the first to create a formal patient navigation program. What are your dreams now that you have obviously fulfilled a very big one? My dreams are many and still very much involve The Rose and it being a leader in bringing about the social and economic changes needed for women and girls. I’m finalizing a memoir about The Rose and am working on two other books. I believe in possibilities and love living in the world of imagination that manifests in real life. (For more information about The Rose, their services, events, making a donation, and other resources, visit www.therose.org)

The Rose introduces the “Me2” awareness campaign, seeking to encourage women to partner with friends/family members to make annual screenings a priority, to remove the fear factor by making the scheduled appointment day fun, and to encourage insured women to enlist two other insured women

to make their appointments at The Rose. Me2 is an ongoing campaign of The Rose including direct mail and social media appeals while highlighting the importance of a woman taking care of “Me, too.” For more information, visit www.TheRose.org.

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence

of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

Sean D. Tucker & Team Oracle to return to 2012 Wings Over Houston No one who has seen a performance by Sean D. Tucker will ever forget it.

Betsey Ennis photos*

Tucker's work in the Oracle Bi-Plane provides his audiences with feats that are truly death-defying. More than half of Sean's maneuvers are original and have never been duplicated by another aerobatic pilot. During his performance, Sean will fly the Oracle Challenger backwards at a speed of more than 100 mph, cut three ribbons in a single pass, perform his legendary "Centrifuge" and "Son of Edwin" maneuvers. The Gforces exerted on Sean when he is flying are greater than those on the pilots in modern fighters like the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels. Check out Tucker at the 2012 Wings Over Houston.

W Harvest Moon Regatta to take place Oct. 25-27 Skippers Meeting Oct. 19 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Harvest Moon Regatta Chairman Dwight Bengtson has announced that the Skippers Meeting for the 26th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta will be held on Fri. night, Oct. 19, 7:30 pm in the club’s ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway in Seabrook. “Since this is a highly attended event of up to several hundred people, we are encouraging racers to come early to pick up their skippers’ packets at 6:30 pm,” Bengtson related. “Then they will have time to review the sailing instructions before the start of the meeting.” The packets can be picked up in the Chart Room which is down the hall from the ballroom. T-shirts and race paraphernalia can be purchased from volunteers in the ballroom lobby. “The Skippers Meeting is a critical one for racers to attend,” stated Lakewood’s Fleet Captain Joyce Maxwell, “as additional information will be addressed such as expected weather conditions, any changes to the racing rules or the dockage in Port Aransas.”

Ever wonder if any of those beautiful looking sail boats you see when you visit Seabrook or Kemah Boardwalk ever venture beyond Galveston Bay? Well they do! Some 250 yachts 30’ to 65’ head to Galveston every October on the full moon to enter the United State’s largest off shore regatta US port to US port called the Harvest Moon Regatta. Starting from Galveston late afternoon just off the Pleasure Pier vicinity, they sail offshore to Port Aransas. Most usually cover the 150 nautical mile non-stop course in 24 to 30 hours through the night, wind permitting. John Ennis photos*

On the Water 3rd ANNUAL J/FEST SOUTHWEST SLATED FOR OCT. 13-14 J/Fest Southwest Committee Chairman Al Goethe has announced that Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) will be hosting its 3rd Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta on Sat., Oct. 13 and Sun., Oct. 14. It is open to the public and all races will be held on Galveston Bay. J/Fest regattas have been held for over 27 years in Annapolis, San Diego, San Francisco, New Orleans and Seattle. The focus of the J/Fest is to give J/Boat racers a chance to compete in one-design races. “Our J/Fest Southwest will be another great opportunity for Lakewood to promote and support a national caliber event,” remarked Goethe. The overall theme of our J/Fest Regatta is to provide a venue that is all inclusive to J/Boat owners, their family, and friends. While the racers are on the water, their spouses, children, and friends can enjoy a myriad of activities and tourist attractions in and around the Bay Area Houston arena. Goodie bags for skippers will contain coupons for family fun. “Since Seabrook is the title sponsor for our regatta, we hope that visiting racers will book their accommodations at our fine Seabrook motels,” add LYC Fleet Captain Joyce Maxwell. J/Boats Southwest, headquartered in Austin, is inviting J/Boat owners from all over the nation to bring their J/Boats to Seabrook and to participate in all the fall/winter sailing at J/Fest Southwest and other local regattas. One design fleets slated for the J/Fest Southwest Regatta include J/22, J/24, J/80, J/105, and the J/109. It will be a circuit stop for the J/22, 24, 105, and 109 classes. Big Richard Performs For The Troops By Rhonda Meredith

LOCAL BAND SAYS YES TO A RETURN TOUR OF MIDDLE EAST MILITARY BASES

Early in the summertime months, the Bay Area’s local party band Big Richard (with the big… personality) embarked on a tour of the Middle East to perform for the brave men and women serving in the United States military. The experience was so profound that Big Richard didn’t hesitate to say yes to perform a second tour this month. When asked if the band members had any personal connections to the military, Charlie Carlisle, Big Richard’s drummer and manager, said “While no one in the band has been active in the military, they have friends and family members who have proudly served or are currently serving in various branches.”

invite you to their jobs. You really get to see what it’s like for them…” Big Richard was able to satisfy the troops from Texas with their requests for some Lone Star State country and heavy rock. “We cut out most of our dance songs and played a variety of rock, country and a little rap,” said Carlisle. “Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown was probably the troops’ favorite.” When they were not performing, the band members were at a gym on base, playing basketball, and even went on a visit to a camel farm. Carlisle says the camels were pretty friendly “probably because we

Due to security reasons and the integrity of the program that sends entertainers to perform for the troops, Carlisle could only say that Big Richard would be out of the United States for “about 10 days in October.” At this point, any additional information could jeopardize future entertainment. More generally speaking, he said it takes about 40 hours of travel to get where they are going. And while there wasn’t too much of a safety concern during the last tour, Carlisle admits the band did have a slight fear of a plane they traveled in while overseas. “It just seemed pieced together with leftover Volkswagen parts.” He added that the speed at which the pilots flew was “super fast and a flight that should have taken an hour, took about 35 minutes.” When overseas, Big Richard will stay on the various bases, nearby hotels, or “other.” The band members have previously spent the night in a converted shipping container that could accommodate six people. Carlisle also said the weather is kind of similar. “There was some humidity when visiting troops located on the coast,” said Carlisle, “And the heat was pretty extreme with temperatures around 110 to 115 degrees… When the base had a black flag flying it meant no physical activity other than walking from one building to the next.” Carlisle compares the food on base to Golden Corral and the vicious reputation of the Middle Eastern sandstorm is true. “The sand smacked us in the face after exiting a van we had been traveling in. It was like Roger Clemens pitching fastballs at you…” In fact, one of their shows had to be cancelled because of a sandstorm. As far as the show itself, everything but their guitars was borrowed. “The bases had pretty good sound equipment and playing for the troops was such an awesome experience. It’s very different than playing for people drinking in a bar. You feel a lot of love and appreciation, but it’s more than just that. The soldiers

were feeding and petting them” and “they were all one humpers!’ Since returning to the United States, Big Richard hasn’t slowed down. They have performed in Florida, Louisiana, and of course in their Bay Area hometown. Big Richard formed in 2009 as a spin-off from the all original local band The Crisis. The members are Will Wadkins (guitar and vocals), Curtis Skelton (guitar and vocals), George Thomas III (bass guitar) and Charlie Carlisle (drums). Check out Wadkins and Thomas’ acoustic show, along with area musician Daniel Lopez, at Cabo in Seabrook on Tuesday nights. Carlisle’s final thought about Big Richard’s overseas gig is “It was an absolute honor and a pleasure to go perform for our troops, and we are excited about going back.” Visit www.BigRichard.com for more information on the band.

10,000 PEOPLE, MAYBE MORE - was our estimate at the inaugural Boogie, Blues & Brews. Not sure how it could have been aligned any better at the ever-friendly settings of Walter Hall Park with League City celebrating her 50th Birthday, an eclectic musical lineup of veteran acts, inspiring young acts, and fantastic causes Including Galveston County Food Bank, Bay Area Habitat for Humanity and Clear Creek Environmental Foundation. Good mojo was aplenty with The Blues Hound, James Nagle, of KPFT helping get word out to true music lovers and the legions of fans from the Houston Blues Society legitimized the integrity of the music put forth. Cool too were all of YOU in what had to be perhaps one of the largest gathering of SCENE Magazine readers ever in one place. The main stage acts all deserve full write ups and without exception played the way live festivals should be played with none of the short jingle stuff, rather instead the top-shelf exquisitely fine musical trances through and through. Remember how good those felt like? The music filled Walter Hall Park endlessly throughout the weekend between the main stage and the Bayou Stage where the ever tireless David Schwope was at the helm. Originally listed as an acoustic venue, the musical fates had different ideas twirling the energy knobs at least three turns past the stops each day the entire weekend. Wow, that was fun! Bringing it all home on the Bayou Stage was Moondog which is ironically fitting as we understand it was their band of the early day, Cold Feet, who were often called upon to open the Seabrook Music Festival. By the way, the coolest stage the entire weekend, hands down, goes to the Teen Cafe where we got a look ahead at some of our young local talent you’ll be listening to in the years ahead. Kudos to All Points Productions, the festival goddesses, event sponsors, volunteers, and to League City (whom I’m nominating to run traffic control at Ellington Field) for pulling together this over-the-top musical event and for doing this when we all needed it most. Let's do it again! Boogie, Blues & Brews

MY VOTE - Being it’s Snit Fitzpatrick’s Dog and Pony election season, we’ll Show @ Katie’s share... We are constantly asked by folks where’s the best place for classic R&B, Blues & Rock in the local area and find it easy recommending Katie’s down in Bacliff. With a steady solid musical lineup, friendly service, plenty of parking and never a cover charge, it’s a pretty easy call anybody can make. This month, we scored a fine quality evening with Snit Fitzpatrick’s Dog and Pony Show that included guest appearances by the Mighty Orq and Matt Johnson on the bass and kit making for an intelligently bright and refreshing treat to the ears. Katie’s – Keep them on your lineup card!

Snit’ Fitzpatrick’s Dog and Pony Show @ Katie’s

SWEET BIJOU - ’Tis a sweet one indeed. This month, we scored a copy of Dave Nevling’s new CD, Sweet Bijou, and now gotta figure out which award we’ll be nominating it for. First thing that jumps out at you and then on through the entire album is its ease of listening as the essence is presented to your ears versus many productions these days leaving listeners to sort through and decipher intent. Score big Snit points for the mixing and mastering efFitzpatrick @ Katie’s fort. Nevling and his band use amazingly few words on this album and through the use of tones, licks, vocal inflections, grooves, and dynamics, lets listeners fill out those parts better than being told what to think. Score massive points for the artists and to the listeners. Sweet Bijou... ’Tis sweet!!!

Cassette Tape: Expect The Unexpected! By Rhonda Meredith

Tape can be described as indescribable. It’s more about the experience, than the genre. The band members are avid fans of music in general and their passion is expressed through a musical connection between them and the audience. In fact, the meaning behind the band name is simple. Cassette Tape was born based on all of the good music that influenced them was listened to from a cassette tape. Plus the name “Cassette Tape” was catchier than the name “The Vinyl Band.”

Everything has a beginning. Sometimes the beginning is not a definite date, but more of a cosmic event that transpires over a period of time. What started off as friends just jamming and creating musical fusion became something quite special. And when lyrics where twisted and crunched into the emotive sounds, it was good. It was too good to keep within the four walls of their practice room…

Their influences are wide ranging from classic rock, modern heavy rock, to Spanish folk music. All of this forms the building blocks to the experimental, hip hop, progressive reggae that has the band flexing their musical muscles into a unique sound.

Matt Cash and Louis Morales (each guitars and vocals) ventured out with guitars and a desire to “just play songs live.” The pair headed to a bar in Galveston and talked their way into a 30 minute set that included originals and inspired cover songs. The half hour turned into owning the stage all night and regular gigs being booked.

Cassette Tape is more than a jam band with an EP. They are a tight-knit group of musicians who thrive on spontaneity and improvisation. At each performance, their strengths are brought to the forefront as the songs performed are being chiseled away at and refined. “It’s an organic experience,” says Molina.

Cash and Morales admittedly “bugged” Cam Rowe (bass) constantly to join them. It’s evident at this point that it isn’t easy to deny Cash and Morales as their negotiating skills are strong. So, Rowe joined the band. Rounding out the line-up are Noe Molina (drums), Marc Borde (guitar and vocals), and David “4” (percussion). Cassette

Venture out and see a taste of what Cassette Tape can do live. Arrive with an open mind and expect the unexpected during their alloriginal song set. For more information, visit www.reverbnation.com/cassettetape or email cassettetape@rocketmail.com.

Truly an experience not to be missed...

In his live show review for the New York Times, Jon Pareles noted: “Mr. Lydon sings the songs with all their taunts, injuries, fury and sarcasm in a voice that’s as cutting as ever. And this lineup of PiL--with two members who joined the band in 1986, the guitarist Lu Edmonds and the drummer Bruce Smith, along with Scott Firth on bass and keyboards--finds its own way to make the songs bristle and churn. The band didn’t copy old albums; it redrew songs within the original outlines. …Mr. Edmonds set the major chords chiming; the beat surged forward; and Mr. Lydon was a figure of irascible integrity. Rock’s antihero had become, against all expectations, a rock hero.”

the scene’s martini madness FRESA – “You must excuse me, but I have already dined. And I never drink wine.” (Gary Oldman, Bram Stoker's Dracula) Beware! Strawberry is a fruit of seduction… just like a vampire’s kiss. This fruity concoction is spellbinding with a bright red wild strawberry-flavored liqueur made by DeKuyper and Skyy Vodka. It has a thriller appeal. Enjoy with shrimp brochette and lots of garlic. APPLE – “Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble.” (Shakespeare) Why bob for apples when you can drink an apple flavored martini? It’s spooktacular! Its supernatural sweet flavor is made possible by DeKuyper’s Sour Apple Pucker and Skyy Vodka. Pair this with Joe’s Salad. You may need to eat light to outrun the zombies on Hallow’s Eve!

Prepared at Mamacita’s 515 E. NASA Parkway (Webster) 281-332-5362 MEXICAN – “Why don't you go haunt a house? Rattle some chains or something.” (Oda Mae Brown, Ghost) It’s all about the spirits this month. A generous amount of Jose Cuervo Tradicional Tequila Reposado is twisted with Grand Marnier liqueur’s blend of true cognacs and the distilled essence of bitter orange. There is a whisper of splash of lime, and the screaming soul of sweet and sour… (Rumor has it that sweet and sour was named after Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.) But don’t panic, an order of fajitas shall quiet any menacing feelings of hunger.

We Love Martinis!

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE record his debut album. We took in original after original song that evening and were consistently impressed with his vivid storytelling of places and experiences. The audience actually stopped talking, took to listening, related, and appreciated. Now *THAT’S* a gold star! If it’s been awhile since you’ve last heard Clinton, keep an eye out for when he’s out on the SCENE and catch a set. Also surf over to CLINTONASHLEY.COM, and checkout how you can be a part of his first album.

Clinton Ashley @ Roger’s Bar & Grill

September sizzled on the SCENE and everywhere we checked, the magazines were flying off the racks. Makes sense, that readers want to know where the action is. This month, we said goodbye to the dog days of summer, the shuttle Endeavour, and replacement refs. We won our last home game in the national league, cheering our Texans on to a hot NFL start, enjoying the return of snow bird weather and best of all, welcome back patio season with a splash of great live music. Where else? Why on The SCENE of course! Here’s a quick spin of what went down...

Beggar’s Union @ Jackie’s Brickhouse

Further around the corner, Jackie’s Brickhouse was at it again in the Bigger and New Department hosting Outlaw Dave and the Lonestar Rally Bikini Contest. This was one sweet event and cooked nicely with Beggar’s Union on stage. Word is we can expect some more of this in the months ahead.

A DASH AROUND THE LAKE We stopped by Fatty’s Sports Bar for Thursday evening Open Mic & Talent Night catching some new acts on the local SCENE including a fun Educated Minds group all the way from San Marcos @ Fatty’s calling themselves Educated Minds. We’ll keep an eye out for some of these new acts as they get book over the next few months. When you listen to Hector Serrano’s host band, one cool thing about them is their soloing, the long majestic stuff that takes you places… and so, we followed them down the road to Roger’s Bar & Grill for a second dose.

Speaking of months ahead, it was good hearing Outlaw Dave reminding everyone that the time is around the corner to stand up, and be counted and make a difference. We're in and you should be, too. Making the turn around the lake... Beggar’s Union @ Jackie’s Brickhouse

While there, we caught up with Clinton Ashley (from the infamous Kemah Jam days). After playing music in and around Texas for the last four-and-a-half years, he’s finally ready to

It’s Football Fever at

FATTY’S Sports Bar By Rhonda Meredith If you've got football fever, you are not alone. Fatty’s Sports Bar in Seabrook has it too. Pigskin frenzy has kicked off the heart of Seabrook with the red zone located at NASA Road 1 and Highway 146 inside Fatty’s. Fatty's Sports Bar is a playmaker with a 110” HD projection TV and numerous big flat screen TVs. They have their sights set on the championship with generous daily drink specials. The wildcard is the Fantasy Football Bikini contest in association with Bikini Open Promotions on Monday nights after the game. “Bikini Open Promotions is so happy to be a part of the Fatty’s Sports Bar’s Fantasy Football Swimsuit Pageant every Monday night. The friendly staff is attentive and patrons from all over Houston come out to Seabrook just to visit Fatty’s and enjoy a hometown bar with a nice neighborly feel,” said Joseph Tamez, the CEO of Bikini Open Promotions. The Fantasy Football Swimsuit Pageant is held immediately following the Monday night football game. There is no un-sportsman like conduct when a group of gorgeous women compete for $600-worth of prizes per event. The first round is sportswear and the second round is bikini. The top two winners at each event advance to finals on Monday, October 29.

THE SCENE

Join Fatty’s Sports Bar in celebrating their one year birthday on Saturday, October 20. According to the organizers, this free event will feature catering by Southern Elegance and deserts by Heavenly Sweet Cakes. Live music starts at 5:30 p.m. with Jeremy Kilgore and later, Modern Art. Various vendors will also be set up for shopping. “We wish to thank everyone for their support for making our first year so wonderful,” said Angie Regis of Fatty’s Sports Bar. “The management and staff have been honored to get to know our patrons. We appreciate being your neighborhood bar.” Make a no-huddle decision to attend their Halloween party on Saturday, October 27. Abraham’s Tree will be tackling the stage and a costume contest will offer the first place winner a $125 prize and the second place stays in bounds with a $75 prize. Score! Fatty’s Sports Bar has a high completion rate any night during the week. On Tuesday nights beginning at 9 p.m., Grab The Mic Promotions hosts karaoke. Wednesdays are “game night” with free pool, darts, and foosball. Well drinks are only $2.25. Thursday nights start and end with a home field advantage. First, it’s the NFL football game, and afterwards it’s the successful and fun open mic night with local musician Hector Serrano showcasing the talents of diverse performers. The Starr Jernigan Band and DJ Flex are in the house in October on select Friday nights and the odds are you will want to be a fan of the shot specials. And on Saturdays, it’s all about college ball. Draft beer is coming soon! Whether you are for rooting for the offense or defense, it’s Fatty’s Sports Bar for the touchdown!

FEATURED LIVE MUSIC

SCOUT BAR

finishing 2012 w/

strong schedule

The upcoming lineup of national acts hitting Clear Lake’s Scout Bar is an impressive one with acts ranging from pioneering latino rappers Cypress Hill to former English punk rocker and Sex Pistol front man Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) and his “post-punk” band Public Image Ltd. In both cases, Scout Bar will be the most intimate venue on both tours, which isn’t a first as Scout Bar owner Thomas Wilson admits Scout has a reputation for “landing (big) acts that have no business playing a club our size.”

Alien Ant Farm Friday, Oct. 12 SCOUT BAR

The winner is the local music fan who gets to see great music up close and personal in an intimate setting. “Johnny Rotten” to play Clear Lake Public Image LTD is described as “a musical force taking a jackhammer to pop music’s boundaries” (Phil Gallo, Billboard, 5/19/12). The group’s much-anticipated North American headlining tour launched October 3 in Orlando and concludes November 3 with an appearance at the Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. - Continued on Page 47
