MASA SUSHI: WHY ONE VISIT IS NOT ENOUGH By Rhonda Meredith Since 2005, Masa Sushi has successfully combined traditional Japanese cuisine with a splash of French flare. The popular eatery has two locations, but both offer a welcoming environment amidst the American contemporary décor with Asian accents. Masa Sushi’s Fusion Restaurant is centrally located in Clear Lake at 977 NASA Road One at El Camino Real and Masa Sushi’s Sake Bar is in Dickinson (1804 W. FM 646) off the Gulf Freeway in the HEB shopping center. Owner Michael Zhou and his wife Chi’s

experience as chefs set the foundations for quality sushi and flavorful sashimi (think beef Costa Rican style) along with many other dishes. Though we use the word "sushi" to refer to all the delicious fish and rice, the word "sushi" actually refers to only the sweet, vinegared rice. If you order fish without the sushi rice, then it's "sashimi." Also, “masa” from the name Masa Sushi means graceful or elegant. The food terms may seem daunting if you are not well versed in Japanese cuisine, but Masa Sushi makes choosing your delicious lunch or dinner easy with the food’s description underneath the menu name. It’s this type of extra effort that makes Masa Sushi a local favorite! The restaurant has a rewards system in place along with a complimentary Masa Sushi membership card. A frequent customer point is added to your card’s account for every dollar you spend. Upon reaching 200 points, you
Nabeyaki Udon
will receive a $20 gift card. Whether you choose to sit at the sushi bar or in a comfortable booth or table, the atmosphere will suit your business or casual needs. And the food will satisfy the craving that needed to be filled! Masa Sushi has an extensive menu that showcases the creativity of its owner. For example in the appetizer selections, the Japan Nacho is a twist on crispy wonton chips with jalapeño, avocado and cream cheese toppings. Alongside the house salad and wonton soup, try Sunomono (black seaweed & cucumber with vinegar sauce) topped with cucumber, ebi su, taki su, kani su, or a combination. Perhaps try the don or nabeyaki udon (Japanese noodle soup with shrimp tempura, beef, chicken, egg and vegetables.) Remember that the friendly and knowledgeable staff will assist you in making
It’s not too early to make New Year’s Eve plans. At both locations, a $100 gift certificate will be given away by drawing every hour between 5 & 11 p.m.

the perfect selection. Dinner entrees include multiple sushi and sashimi combinations, bento boxes, hibachi dinners, and the ever awesome specialty dishes. Order the Masa Hot Rock Beef (thin-sliced rib-eye served with shaved garlic and special dipping sauce) and savor traditional Japanese table cooking in a whole new style. (Only at the NASA Road 1 location.) The seafood connoisseur will want to experience the Seafood Konro (simmering shrimp, scallop, squid, snapper & vegetables on "kamisukinabe" paper.) Masa Sushi’s fresh fish is flown in from Honolulu daily. Thinking outside the usual is a key component to the successful restaurant and the hand rolls and rolls prove it. Stay local with the Houston (yellow tail, green onion, smelt roe) or the Texas (baked yellow tail, jalapeno, cream cheese) styles or venture out into the exotic Norway (fresh salmon, cucumber, avocado, smelt roe, and onion) or Altair (fresh salmon, super white tuna, crab, tuna, jalapeno, and avo-
cado.) Let loose with the Rock ‘N Roll (shrimp tempura, cucumber, green onion) or Spider (soft shell crab, cucumber, and green onion.) Be inspired with culture and opt for the Cajun (fried oyster, avocado, and Cajun spicy sauce). Masa Sushi mixes creativity and fun with their five-piece sushi rolls. Paying homage to our great area is the Space Center Roll (tuna, salmon, yellow tail, smoked salmon, shrimp, crab, avocado, and cucumber) and the signature Masa Sushi Roll is made up of soft shell crab, shrimp tempura, onion, cucumber, smelt roe, avocado, and radishes. New to the menu are the Firecracker (crawfish, spicy shrimp, cucumber, jalapeño, avocado, fresh salmon, spicy salmon, crab, and tempura crunch) and Bonita (spicy mix of red snapper, tuna, fresh salmon, crab & cilantro. topped with tuna, fresh salmon, and avocado). The eight-piece sushi rolls pick up where their smaller counterparts left off with the availability of the John Wayne, Love @ First Sight, Fufu, Deezy, Mountain Fuji, and Red Dragon roll just to name a few! This is why one visit is just not enough to partake in all Masa Sushi has to offer!

Quasar Award Banquet • Jan 18, South Shore Harbour Resort
FRED B. GRIFFIN WILL BE HONORED WITH BAHEP’s 2013 QUASAR AWARD The Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership (BAHEP) will honor Fred B. Griffin with its prestigious 2013 Quasar Award for exceptional leadership in economic development to be presented during the organization’s 21st Annual Quasar Award Banquet on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center in League City, Texas, at 6:30 p.m. The theme of the banquet is Prosperity through Leadership. The Quasar Award is presented each year to a prominent individual who has contributed greatly to the economic wealth and diversity of the Bay Area Houston region. The BAHEP leadership has announced that the 2013 Quasar Award will be presented to Fred Griffin, owner and co-chairman of Griffin Partners, Inc., in appreciation and acknowledgment of his extraordinary contribution to the economic development of the region. Bob Mitchell, the organization’s president, said, “The board of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership was unanimous in its decision to select Fred B. Griffin as the recipient of the 2013 Quasar Award. He has spent most of his life developing communities that have added greatly to the economic development of the region as well as to the quality of life of its residents. Fred is very deserving of this award.” Fred Griffin replied, “When I learned that I was going to be presented with the 2013 Quasar Award I was almost speechless. For the past 20 years, this award has been given to outstanding men and women who have devoted their careers to help make our lives better. To be included among them is such an honor for which I am very grateful.” For more than 40 years, Griffin has thrived on developing new properties and creating suburban communities and office buildings that bring value to clients and exceptional bottom-line performance to investors. Griffin began his real estate career with Friendswood Development Company where he played a key role in the purchase, planning, and development of Kingwood, Woodlake, Greenspoint, Copperfield, Clear Lake City, and other substantial projects throughout the greater Houston area. In 1980, Griffin, with Conley Juban, formed Griffin/Juban Companies, the predecessor to Griffin Partners. The Griffin/Juban Companies, and subsequently Griffin Partners, have completed ground-up development projects encompassing more than 5,000,000 square feet of corporate office and retail space, with over a half million square feet developed in Bay Area Houston. Additionally, Griffin Partners has been an active member of the BAHEP organization for 25 years. In conclusion, Mitchell added, “It is through the vision and leadership of individuals like Fred B. Griffin that the Bay Area Houston region continues to prosper.”

NEW RESTAURANT REPORT
POD-ZU’S
AT
CLIFTON’S BY THE SEA
By Rhonda Meredith Pod-Zu’s is a colorful and fun Cajun restaurant located at 10 Grand Avenue in Bacliff. From gumbo to jambalaya and catfish to crawfish, PodZu’s is proud to offer a menu consisting of Cajun classics. Pod-Zu’s originally began three years ago in Texas City as Pod-Zu’s Crawfish Shed. The popular family restaurant just recently re-located to the former address of Bacliff’s iconic Clifton’s By the Sea. Much heart has gone into opening the new restaurant and the details are evident. The restaurant is a beautiful venue with a bright color theme that contrasts against chrome colored accents and palm trees that sway in the bay breeze. Whether you choose to dine inside or outside, the setting is a perfect complement for a taste of authentic tasting Cajun recipes. The sausage gumbo and the BIGGIE catfish dinner are Pod-Zu’s signature dishes that are on special daily. Other entrees to consider are the Crabmeat Au Gratin, Blackened Catfish Courtouillon, Crawfish Fettuccine, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo or the Seafood Creole. Weekends are kind of a big deal at Pod-Zu’s… Enjoy a full bar while listening to live music on “Da Porch.” As long as the weather permits, the music plays on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Crawfish is also available on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. If you are thinking about hosting an event for business or pleasure, Pod-Zu’s is up for the task. Pod-Zu’s hours of operation are Sundays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursdays 4 to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Keep up with the restaurant’s happenings and “like” Pod-Zu’s on Facebook. Come in for a Mardi Gras experience and "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!”

Area to lose a generous community contributor to Florida In case you haven’t heard: He’s moving on up... to the east side (not sure if it’s to a deluxe apartment or not), but we were struck with the bittersweet news in mid-November that Daniel Costello (long-time proprietor of Carrabba’s in Webster) has been promoted up the ranks to the corporate office in Florida. Costello has been at this location for almost 15 years. In that time, he has made the Carrabba's name synonymous with the words community generosity. His involvement with charities, schools and events is unsurpassed. Come January 1, Costello will take on his new position Joint Venture Partner overseeing six Carrabba's stores. This is a man who has truly made a positive impact to this area. He is leaving big shoes to fill, not only at the restaurant, but throughout the community. Daniel: You and Michele will truly be missed! We wish you the best in your new endeavor! ~Betsey Ennis

The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series Chef Laurence Weddel Mattia's Trattoria Piano Bar 3202 Marina May Drive • 281-334-7445 Background / Experience: I attended Le Cordon Bleu, a French culinary school so one could say my background is classic French, but I've worked at anywhere from fine dining Italian to South American steakhouses. I had to work my way up the ranks and did so very fast. I credit that to my schooling and working under awesome chefs. I learned as much as I could from them even if that meant working for free, but I feel it has definitely paid off. I've also done some consulting and helped set up and open a few establishments. Your Specialty: I'd say classic French, but mainly it's all in the techniques. Once you get that down and your flavor profiles, the rest is being able to work with fresh, quality ingredients and having a good imagination. Cooking is all about trial and error. I would say I'm lucky to have worked in so many restaurants and many different styles. I have taken something from each one of them that I apply in my day-to-day grind. Signature Dish: I do a lot with fresh seafood. I'd say my craziest invention as of late has been Slipper Lobster poached in white wine vanilla beans and butter served atop a slaw of pomegranate, green cabbage, carrot and daikon with a caramelized pineapple rice wine vinaigrette. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? While I was finishing up my externship at Zinc Bistro in Scottsdale, AZ. I got to cook a steak for Thomas Keller. He's a pretty famous and intimidating
chef. As it goes, Chef Keller trained the chef I did my externship under, so it was pretty awesome and nerve racking. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: When searing meat or fish, don't forget to deglaze the pan by pouring in a little white wine. When that reduces half way, whip in a little butter and you get an awesome flavorful sauce.

New Palapa Currently Under Construction at Noah’s Ark By Rhonda Meredith In September 2012, Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill began construction on a downstairs palapa. And it was good. Fast forward to December 2012 and Noah’s Ark is in the midst of constructing an upstairs palapa area. And this is good! Noah’s Ark in Bacliff already has “the best crew and view on Galveston Bay,” and now the restaurant where party animals are welcome has a really unique space available for weddings or any type of event! “We wanted our upstairs to be available for use yearround no matter the weather,” said Dawn Radford, Assistant General Manager at Noah’s Ark. “This area is cool in the summer, dry in the rain, and a little warmer in the winter.” The upstairs palapa consists of a stage, dance floor, seating area of approximately 75, and a full service bar. The dance floor is made of real wood and sized at 16-by-12 feet. The stage is 14-by-14 square feet. The grand opening is being scheduled for early 2013. Until then, Noah’s Ark offers the Lion’s Den party room inside which seats up to 40 people. Hosting an event has never been easier since Noah’s Ark has full service catering. They can handle the details. Also, there is NO CHARGE for the use of the new palapa or the Lion’s Den with the purchase of food and beverages. Noah’s Ark is located at 4438 Boulevard St. in Bacliff and has been at its current location for more than 15 years. Owners Fred and Beverly Lyttle have 30 years experience in the restaurant industry. School of Rock a Reality in Clear Lake Remember the comedy hit movie, “School of Rock?” Well the Clear Lake Area has a School of Rock that opened several months ago, but instead of the goofy Jack Black character, it is with certified professionals that inspire kids to rock on stage and in life. The School of Rock teaches guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards and drums and combines weekly private lessons and group jamming sessions to prepare the aspiring rocker to take to the stage in front of live audiences in an authentic concert setting. For more than a decade, the School of Rock franchise has been inspiring kids to rock. Founded as a single school in Philadelphia, PA, in 1998, School of Rock has become a growing international franchise, operating nearly 100 schools in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil. Their program teaches the best way to learn music is to play music, which help kids develop both their confidence and musicianship with a curriculium designed for all skill levels. To date, School of Rock students have played thousands of concerts to more than 100,000 people, at such legendary venues as CBGB's, The Trocadero, The Knitting Factory, The Whiskey, The Roxy, The Experience Music Project, The Big Easy and BB King's Blues Club in Times Square. Students from this music franchise have performed at music festivals from Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, to Zappanale in Germany. The owner of the School of Rock – Clear Lake is E. J. Nolan and is affectionately referred to as the ‘fearless leader.” He started playing guitar as a youngster and continued to the professional level as a rocker. His bands have appeared on TV shows and recorded with Rockin’ Reggie Vincent, the co-writer of Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies.
E.J. went on to a broadcasting career in radio and television. Some of his credentials besides musician include TV sound for the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Final Four as well as hundreds of NBA, NFL and MLB and Soccer games. He was also the voice of the Houston Rockets first Championship Season. He has appeared frequently on the TV series “Friday Night Lights” and in the movie “Picnic” with Gretchen Mol and Josh Brolin. E.J. was inspired to create the School of Rock - Clear Lake by his sons, both of whom attended the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston. His son Dusty was a drummer and vocalist who passed away at the age of 15 from cancer and because of his love for rock music, E.J. dedicated the school to his spirit. His other son, Skyler, is a professional actor and musician. E.J. has several instructors and interns and his studio manager and music director is Mark Reczeck. The school is for kids ages 7 to18. E.J. says, “The kids are not just taking lessons and learning chords, they are learning songs and performance in a safe environment.” A slogan that they teach by is ‘We don’t learn to perform, we perform to learn.’ There are several programs offered including Lessons Plus and Rock 101. Weekly lessons are 45 minutes with a weekly 90 minute band rehearsal that prepares for the rock concert. If students do not have an instrument there are some available at the school. The regular school hours are Monday through Thursday 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Friday and Sunday. An upcoming special rock camp, ‘Santa Rocks the South,’ is a great holiday gift for kids who want to learn rock music or improve their musical skills during the winter break. The holiday rock camp starts December 17 thru December 22 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Call for details and cost. Call the School of Rock – Clear Lake at 281-21U-ROCK. The address is 1020 W. GREG’s groom ‘n room | Now Open in Kemah!
The Ultimate Boutique for Pet Pampering By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor The newest pet boutique with grooming and boarding opened in November at 512 7th Street in Kemah. The staff is friendly and emphasizes one-on-one care for man’s best friends. Owner Greg Bueker has ten years of grooming experience locally. Just in time for the holiday season, GREG’s groom ‘n room offers overnight, daycare and hourly boarding for those who need to do holiday shopping or are just having a casual dinner. Located a few blocks from the Kemah Boardwalk and across the street from one of the city parking lots, it’s convenient for those who travel with their dog(s) and need to have them watched while at the Kemah Boardwalk, which does not allow animals on the property. “We are not a boarding factory,” said Bueker. "We are small and friendly and are more like a bed and breakfast for pets. We also offer a 12-foot-by-12-foot master suite for the animal lover who would like that extra special space for their pet or for those clients with more than one animal.” The grooming at GREG’s provides a calm and stress-free environment for the dogs. There is no assembly line because it's a quaint shop where this shop owner does the grooming himself. The store offers a wide variety of items for purchase including dog clothes and sweaters, leashes and collars and pet perfume. Shoppers will delight in the animal-themed fine art and custom greeting cards with dogs, cats and birds. Gift ideas for animal owners include collegiate toys and collars for University of Texas, Texas A & M and Louisiana State University, so their pet can proudly sport the orange, maroon or purple. Stop by GREG’s groom ‘n room & pet boutique today for that perfect pet gift or call 281-549-4096 for an appointment to pamper your pooch. You can find GREG’s on Facebook or online at www.GREGsgroomnroom.com. “Merry Pawsmas!”

DECEMBER 2012
Whittling on a Grand Scale By Kelley Dawson Long-time Bay Area resident and sculpture maker, James “Jim” Phillips is a self-taught, chainsaw-wielding artist. According to Phillips, it was only seven years ago that cutting down a tree in his front yard, thrust him into the wood carving world. “I just went to cuttin’ on it and created a pelican,” he said. Phillips still possesses the first pelican he ever carved. Several neighbors and friends asked if he could do it again and Phillips admitted he became obsessed. Phillips learned to draw from his mother, and he supposed he “fancied” himself as an artist in high school. But, he added that he hadn’t worked on any art for 30 years; due to marriage, kids, working full-time in industrial equipment and supply sales, “and just loving life.” Upon his return to art, the captivated carver soon amassed a forest of wooden works. Phillips then found Simply Art Gallery in Galveston and began selling pieces. “It’s the coolest feeling in the world making money for something you made,” he said. Phillips recounted the story of selling one of his pieces to a local Kemah gallery.
Featured Artist: James “Jim” Phillips
He said he was beside himself and “so proud to see the piece sitting on the shelf.” Phillips said he went to fetch his wife from their home just 15 minutes away to show her, and the piece was already sold. In September of 2008, Hurricane Ike wiped out the Simply Art Gallery though Phillips managed to save many of his sculptures. A year-and-half after Ike while out searching for wood and a new gallery, Phillips said the Galveston Art League approached him. The organization wanted him to carve the dead tree in front of their building. Phillips exclaimed, “I jumped at the opportunity.” He said he then made a nuisance of himself at Galveston’s city hall in the hopes of carving a niche for himself amongst the town’s dead hurricane trees. Phillips was commissioned to do the first two trees in Galveston. He then carved several more trees and stumps for private home-owners including the Tin Man at a home once owned by one of the original producers of the Wizard of Oz. Tour buses now run routes to the carved trees sites in Galveston. Phillips commented if he happens to be maintaining one of the trees during a tour that the “ladies get off the bus and huddle around and chat me up.” Two years ago, after the show Texas Country Reporter produced a flattering piece on Phillips, he said his website “blew up.” Phillips related that it became rapidly clear he was not paying attention to his employer and needed to carve full time. Phillips quit his job and said he’s “been whittling ever since.” His many projects include both individual commissioned pieces and on-sight sculptures which take him all over the country. Phillips explained that he gets most of his medium from wood disposal yards and landscapers. He made it clear that he has no favorites and likes all kinds of wood. Phillips believes “there is no ugly wood.” He said, “Aberrations in the wood gives it character.” Phillips sometimes fills the anomalies with powdered turquoise that he sets with super glue.
According to him, there are no types of wood easier or better to carve. He said, “A chainsaw doesn’t care the type of wood.” Phillips stated a non-commissioned project starts with a “cool piece of wood” and he “doodles by making holes and changing the elevation” with his chainsaw. In regards to commissioned pieces, Phillips starts with a sketch of the buyer’s requested subject. He molds a clay model for final approval, photographs the tree for scaling and “then gets to carving.” He said most projects take a week to whittle, but larger tree carvings can take up to a month to complete. If the purchaser has no particular subject in mind, Phillips warns the wooden sculpture will be a “fish or a naked lady.” Current works available at the Rene Wiley gallery in Galveston or view his website www.inshoresculpture.com.
Visit with and see Phillips’ creations at BAY AREA ART WALK on December 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Nassau Bay Town Square (located at Saturn Lane and Space Park Blvd. in Nassau Bay).

Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence
of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

Fit to Be SCENE: Chris Allen
Exercise turns to entertainment and enthusiasm for Kemah boater of the major muscle groups and improves cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength. It is one of the oldest Olympic sports and can be performed in any river, lake, sea or other large body of water.
By Twila Linblade For the past several years, there has been one brave soul who has relied on the strength of his body to propel his way through Clear Lake for the annual Christmas Boat Lane Parade. Chris Allen, from Kemah, has been rowing his boat in the parade for 24 years. He has been the only competitor for several years that does not use a motor, sail or other device to power his boat. Allen’s 15-foot Wherry row boat, imported from Maine, is decorated with Christmas lights, a candy cane, Santa Claus and Spuds Mackenzie, his “look-out dog.” “People always joke that they know what to expect with my boat, because it doesn’t change much from year to year,” he said. “Maybe one day when I retire, I’ll change it up.” Rowing has been a hobby of Allen’s since 1985. “It’s a great way to exercise. I decided a long time ago, that if I needed to be somewhere, I would just row to get there,” he said. Allen has always believed that exercise is important. Before he began rowing, he was a novice runner. “I was never really a serious runner. I did some 10K races, but that was my way of getting aerobic exercise,” he said. “Then, it started to really bother my legs and knees and I decided that since I lived on the water, I would try rowing.” Rowing is a non-weight bearing sport that exercises all
38
Allen keeps his body in shape for his rowing adventures by lifting weights at home about twice a week and by riding his bike three to four times a week. He has raced in the Blackburn Challenge in Massachusetts and rowed in the Eerie Canal, different areas of Texas and in the Clear Lake area. One of Allen’s longest rowing journeys was a 9-hour tour of the Dickinson Bayou into Clear Lake. “There was a lot of wind that day,” he said. When he is not rowing one of his three boats, Allen is at United Airlines (formerly Continental) in Houston, where he has worked as an engineer since 1974. Allen said participating in the parade has been a joy for him which brings him back each year. “There is a lot of adrenaline and so many people cheering and waving. I really look forward to it,” he said. The 51st annual Christmas Boat Lane Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8 from the South Shore Harbour Marina in League City at 7 p.m. More than 60 awards will be distributed in the categories of sail, power, sponsored sail, sponsored power and man-powered. The boaters will parade past spectators in Seabrook, Kemah and the Galveston Bay and will return to their marinas at about 10 p.m., said Shari Sweeney, vice president of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosts and organizes the event each year while the City of League City is the title sponsor. The City of Nassau Bay, also a sponsor, will signal the start of the parade with a fireworks display from their peninsula. DON’T TAKE A HOLIDAY FROM THE GYM THIS SEASON Howdy y’all! Meathead here again! Over the holidays – from Halloween to New Year’s – Americans are estimated on average to gain 4 to 7 pounds due to the “holiday experience.” Now that’s not 4 to 7 pounds of muscle – we all know that! Each pound of fat is a storage unit for 3500 extra calories. On the low end, 4 pounds equals 14,000 calories. Now over the two-month period, we consider “the holidays,” that can equate to 10 adult beverages (liquor, not necessarily beer) = 2000 calories; three slices of pumpkin pie = 1000; average Thanksgiving dinner = 2,500 calories; average Christmas dinner = 2,500 calories. Let’s not forget the egg nog (not spiked): 4 cups = 2,400 calories; a liiittle bit of fudge/cookie/fruitcake, etc. = 1,200 calories. This all sums up to 11,600 calories – and that’s being conservative. These are all “extra calories” on top of what the average person will eat in a day.
THE SCENE
I’m throwing these numbers at you so you can see how important it is to stay in the gym over the holidays. Also to realize its a holiDAY, not a holiWEEK! Once the event is over, get back on your program and eat normally. The allure of leftovers and holiday serving sizes is going to be great, granted, but remember the hard work you’ve put in the rest of the year! Don’t blow 10 months of hard work in a little less than two months! We all get busy this time of year, and skipping the gym is the easiest thing to do since it frees up that valuable hour to go do anything else – from watching the parade, to Christmas shopping, to hitting up the office party. Just remember, that hour is really only 4% of your total day, you can spare it to
39
keep your hard work into your body intact so you can look great at those parties! You’ve seen that guy or girl trying to fit into clothes about 5 pounds too little for them. Don’t be THAT one! Keep your eyes on the prize, and you can make it through this holiday season without losing (too much) ground! It will make the new year much easier to face, and you will be that much closer to being ready for bikini season next year! The great part about Texas is that bikini season starts March 1! Have a great holiday season and remember to GET IN THE GYM!!! – Rick Hunter Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of MEathead's Fitness. After being an Occupational Therapy practitioner for 10 years, Rick decided to turn his focus into the preventative side of medicine. Find Rick at 713-459-3427.

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 43 MADIGAN & THE BRICKHOUSE – 2012 winds up with both of these entertainment powerhouses solidly set. Madigan’s new personnel, Michael McCollum and Jeremy Walton (keys and bass) have clearly meshed with the trio of Dave, Melissa and Todd (and Dale on the desk) resulting in a groove and SIZZLE the likes few bands can pull off. In the continual reinvention camp, Jackie’s Brickhouse gives “status quo” a new meaning which in itself should only be attempted if those strong enough. We expect 2013 to be a great year for both Madigan and Jackie’s Brickhouse. Madigan @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
Tommy Dardar @ Katie’s
CONGRATULATIONS – To Katie’s down in Bacliff for their 5th year anniversary of the area’s finest Rock & Blues happening. With “never a cover” to celebrate the event, Harp Master Tommy Dardar took the stage with Bob and the boys along with a great neighborhood crowd for an enjoyable holiday evening of inspiring blues. Cheers also goes to the folks at Dempsey’s for their new hangout along the I-45 entertainment corridor. It's not easy outgrowing your neighborhood, but John and his folks did just that. Congrats to all! IN CLOSING – There were lots of super holiday musical events that went down last month and more to come in December. It’s a time for friends from over the years to re-gather, hang out, get reacquainted, and re-energized at the place we call The SCENE. Be a hero when your group gathers by sharing your copy with friends and keeping it handy as we’ve been noticing they’re going fast these days. You can also keep up with all that's happening on Facebook or SCENELIVE.NET, okay? With the hustle and bustle season upon us, I'd like to pass along a tip from my buddy Tony: Shift your gears into neutral if you can. Go with the flow; enjoy the month with others, and if you can, keep live music in your life. Happy holidays, and we'll see you in 2013!
A BRIEF WORD – Many of you have complimented our efforts and ask what makes us tick. Two answers and the first is easy: It’s all of you doing what you do best and that’s getting out there enjoying life and live music out in arguably the finest happening regions on this planet. The second is the spirit of people like local resident Lisa Hamilton who opens eyes and minds with Lisa Hamilton an edgy energetic theater vibe. Her latest acclaimed project is of one person’s battle with cancer, “Bald in the Land of Big Hair” and heading to New York City. Pretty cool, eh? What's cooler is that the show will be running up Red Bluff Road on January 11 and 12.

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 45 A NEW BEAT ON THE BEAT Mike Shanks & Rick Recckio @ Cockeyed Seagull - And that’s Cisco hosting the Cockeyed Seagull’s Thursday Open Mic. The acoustic bass meister has been around the area for years supporting and hosting open mic events. Now, he brings to the Seagull an additional network of jammers which is all good. This month at the Seagull, we enjoyed the Michael Shanks and Rick Recckio acoustic duet and caught the return of former Punk rocker Billy Gilbert returning to the stage after a 25-year haul raising family. Billy has good pipes, a deep play list, jams well with others, and should be an act you'll be seeing more of in Bob Head @ 2013. The best treat for SeagCockeyed Seagull ull holiday regulars was the return of the Reverend Bob Head from his busy North American traveling schedule and his ever-popular rendition of Heavens Door. Holidays in Houston are some of the best and the Seagull had it. Speaking of holidays... Billy Gilbert @ Cockeyed Seagull

The warm up bands for Epica @ Scout Bar the Hunger's annual ritual were all worthy headliners themselves including Erase The Virus, Melovine (with Matthew Neice sporting a great new look), and Saturate (one of the hardest rocking bands on the planet). We’ve been catching a few of the ETV as they handled personnel swaps over the years and happy to say this group has melded into one tight cohesive unit you would expect at Scout Bar. Band faithfuls will always support their favorites but earning new fans takes a sound presentation properly gelled. Nice... Speaking of gelling well... - Continued on Page 42 The Hunger @ Scout Bar

IN THE LIGHTHOUSE DISTRICT - We took in live music at Zone 504 and T-Bone Tom’s scoring both as evenings well-spent. We first saw Infinity’s Twin at Union Tavern and were intrigued with Infinity’s Twin Bino’s sonic nuances on @ Zone 504 electric violin. It was enough to place them on our follow-up list. Fool on us! This evening at The Zone, they brought additional percussionists not typical to the night scene giving their surreal sound a syncopated depth grabbing the body from the inside out. Now *that,* folks, is good stuff! Bringing to mind the word “Zest” is what we got a dose of at the Zone.

BACK ON THE BEAT Wood & Wind And that would be PodZu’s @ PodZu’s at the old Clifton’s By The Sea location in Bacliff. The nearby State of Texas land marker notes the neighborhood as a musical gathering spot from the turn of the (20th) century, and we witnessed the return of live music to the location with the perfect band, Wood & Wind (Bobbie and Steve Revak along with John and Steve on bass and kit.) The staff at PodZu’s were friendly and getting it down with plenty of good drinks and eats for the good-sized crowd. We give this place a “Good to Go!” score. - Continued on Page 43
Among the first bands we covered upon joining The SCENE team was a group calling themselves The Navigators. We noted “...a strong deeply talented line-up...” Years later we follow up and guess what… It's still true! With one of the largest play lists going, Galen Medlenka and Curtis Spencer hold down a solid groove foundation with Donald Bonner on horns providing airy accents leaving the sonic center for the dual lead guitarists, Randy Hughes and Curtis Beinhorn both capable of playing whatever comes to mind with authority. the scene’s martini madness CLASSIC COSMO TINI – Skip the eggnog this year and opt for another classic. The “Cosmo tini” is sure to spread plenty of holiday cheer. The combination of Skyy vodka, cranberry juice, and a dash of Cointreau could become a tradition all of its own. APPLE TINI – ‘Tis the season to be merry! Out with the red and in with the green. This festive colored martini is made with Stoli vodka, DeKuyper’s Sour Apple Pucker, and Triple Sec. TINI BLUES – Deck the halls with Absolut vodka and Raspberry Infusion…. Falalalala-lala-lala… TEQUILA TINI – On the first day of Christmas South Shore Grille made for me… A Cuervo Gold tequila mixed with Gran Gala orange liqueur, a splash of lime juice, presented with a salted rim. One drink and you may have to ask yourself, "Am I on the naughty or nice list?" MANGO TINI – It has been said that before Christmas Eve, elves try to stick to their four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. But afterPrepared at wards, it’s time to celebrate to the tune of chilled Grey Goose South Shore Grille vodka, mango syrup, and Triple Sec. Boy, was he impressed, and so were we! <lol> Thousands showed up for this worthy all-women fund raising event. Remember Cyndi Lauper’s, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun?” Boy, did they ever! Renaissance Festival
Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Greetings! November was a great month and like many of you, we enjoyed the company of family, friends, great food and spirits, and live music out on The SCENE. It's simply amazing the cool stuff we have going on here. Let's run down what we did with you out there...
It was masGritty Goddess sively great mojo seeing all these spirited participants giving it their total all *and* having fun along the way. Through the slimiest mud, mountains of mulch and other dubious ventures. Somehow, the event organizers need to add “Gusto” to Gritty and Goddess. These gals got it! Cheers!
TIMELESS - Is a term applicaRenaissance Festival ble to live music, and this month, SCENE readers took the magic trip back in time at the Texas Renaissance Festival and also the ever-special Dickens On The Strand. Both events have their ways of recalibrating the present through sensory stimulations of sight, sounds, aromas and flavors on how it went down in days yore - Not exactly Disney magic, but just as effective which keeps we merry monger SCENE readers heading back each year for more. Dickens was particularly cool this year celebrating what would have been the 200th birthday of the man himself. Special guests of honor helping mark the event were two descendants of Charles Dickens: Lucinda Dickens Hawksley and Jane Monk. Two festivals, two trips back into Dickens on time, two big scores...

Years of bartending experience? Ten years total with the past two years at The Hop in Webster. Management says she has a great personality.
Any New Year’s Eve resolutions coming up? The League City resident smiles and her single resolution is to always make her child the priority.
Her signature drink to make is… The Blue Mist. Amber’s own concoction made with vodka, Blue Curacao and 7-Up is a customer favorite.
You may not know that: Amber has been surfing for 14 years. It brings her a sense of peace and calmness.
What’s the best thing about bartending? The people! And every day it’s something different. Any advice for a newbie bartender? Just relax and it will be ok... It’s Christmas time! Amber loves the lights and holiday cheer.

And on that note... She loves anything having to do with the water: Boating, fishing, etc. Amber’s favorites are… Music: Everything but rap, but maybe Eminem. Color: Any shade of blue. Food: Fried alligator and crawfish. Sports: Any sports except basketball. Go Saints and Texans!

Dempsey’s Irish Grill:
Rocking Its New Location! By Rhonda Meredith It’s a hop, skip, and a jump from League City to Webster, but Dempsey’s move proves that location is huge. Welcome to the new Dempsey’s! It’s better, badder to the bone, and rocking the new spot at 20801 Gulf Freeway at NASA Road One (in the Bally’s Fitness Shopping Center). Fresh from last month’s grand opening, Dempsey’s boasts a better facility, more parking, a larger kitchen, and an expanded menu. What hasn’t changed is owner’s John Delesandri’s loyalty to Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish sports team and his business philosophy, “A good Irish American establishment makes everyone comfortable. There are no strangers at Dempsey’s, only friends you haven't met yet.” Since 2010, Delesandri has been connected to his community and supporting local music. Dempsey’s Irish Grill opens daily at 11 a.m. Lunch specials are only $5 and are offered until 2 p.m. So, on Mondays, order a salad and customize it with five toppings. It’s all about the soup and sandwich on Tuesdays. Wednesdays feature Dempsey’s Italian meatloaf plate served with a side of pasta.
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY: Parking lot gumbo cook-off on Saturday, December 15, benefitting Texas Children’s Hospital and a local family in need. It’s $100 to enter. The winners will be picked for judge’s choice, people’s choice and best booth. Chicken, sausage, or seafood gumbo can be entered.
SAVE THE DATE! Party in Dempsey’s parking lot on Monday, January 7, 2013, for the National Championship with an Irish twist. Watch Notre Dame play Alabama in with live music, traditional bagpipes, female Irish dancers, and complimentary Guinness Beef Stew while it lasts. The drink specials abound with $5 Car Bombs, $3 domestic bottles, and $2 domestic drafts.
You call it any burger on the menu and fries on Thursdays. And Friday, it’s chef’s choice. Anytime is a good one to experience a Dempsey’s Ding Ding (Italian sausage sautéed with peppers, onions and Amaretto; then topped with cheese.) Other signature offerings are Dempsey’s Famous Philly and their pickled eggs. Try the new Al's Columbianos (five Colombian pastries with jalapeño, cilantro, pepper jack cheese, onions and served with sour cream and salsa). If you want a taste of Irish goodness, opt for Shepherd’s Pie or Guinness Beef Stew. Come to Dempsey’s on Monday nights to watch the game and enjoy food and drink specials from 7 to 11 p.m. Partake in the Texas Tall Boy Tuesday and receive $2 Lone Star or PBR tall boys and $5 BBQ sandwiches and onion rings or fries. Live musical entertainment from Seth Savage and/or Clinton Ashley and Texas country on the jukebox. Boots and hat are not required. Hump day specials begin at 9 p.m. It’s $2.50 domestic bottles and $4 bombs all night! Leave your stage fright behind and join in some karaoke with Shawna Cole! LADIES! It’s Thursday night and you (yes, YOU) should be at Dempsey’s. The specials are numerous: $2 margaritas and house wine, $2.50 Lime-A-Ritas, $5 Dempsey’s Texas tea, $7 Rib-eye with fries or rings, and a $4 grilled chicken salad. That’s FIVE reasons to have a girl’s night out and unwind. The key word is “bucket” when it comes to Friday nights at Dempsey’s. A domestic beer bucket is $36 and a premium or import bucket is $41. The bucket special holds 12 beers. Simply add $10 to keep the Texans bucket. It’s a five gallon bucket that is perfect for holding tools! Local live music takes center stage on Friday and Saturday nights. Show the bartender you’ve checked into Dempsey’s on Facebook, and the owner will buy you a shot! Show your Houston Texan’s love by wearing Texan’s gear during a Texan’s game because if you do, Delesandri will buy you a shot for every touchdown or “swatt” by Watt. - Continued on Page 44
