CRAZY ALAN'S SWAMP SHACK:
“Food so good, makes ya wanna licks yo fingas!” By Adam Donaghey Kemah's own Cajun rascals Boudreaux and Thibodeaux have been at it again – concocting brand new menu items and introducing new friends over at Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack, located a stone's throw from the Kemah Boardwalk. Over the holidays they'd given us all quite a scare when they took a trip back home deep in the heart of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin (that big ole' swamp next to N'awlins). Homesick as they were, we thought we'd lost them forever. Luckily, on their way they saw a sign that read “N'awlins Left,” and they came right back. The journey wasn't wasted, however, for along the way – amidst catchin' catfish, giggin' frogs and trampin' flounder – Boudreaux and Thibodeaux managed to expand the Swamp Shack menu; they also found another critter to showcase at the restaurant! That critter is a Dwarf Caiman (alligator) who will join the three Caiman amigos – Cujo, Cujack and Cujill – who presently reside at the Swamp Shack. Unlike his buddies, however, the new addition is nearly five feet long! Families who wish to dine with the Caimans should look out for the new Alligator Table – coming soon, the table will feature an aquarium under glass. Bring the kiddos and they can get their pictures taken with the Caimans! Brand new food options at the Swamp Shack make the latest menu the most wellrounded it's ever been. While the restaurant specializes in seafood and Cajun dishes, not everything is spicy
and there's plenty of meaty treats for the land food lover as well, including steaks, burgers, sandwiches and chicken dishes. Personally, I'm a seafood lover, so when I met with owner Alan Franks to chat about the new additions (Boudreaux and Thibodeaux were off setting trotlines), I was excited to try the Blackened Catfish, topped with alligator etouffee. The fish was fresh and the sauce was the perfect blend of spices and alligator meat. Other new entrees include mash-ups of classic dishes – all with a Cajun flair. Tex-Mex is a Bay Area favorite so Enchiladas of the Sea should be a popular choice. The enchiladas are corn tortillas wrapped around crawfish, shrimp, crab and spinach with three cheese chipotle cream sauce, avocado and sour cream. The Stuffed T-Bone takes a classic 16-ounce T-Bone steak (blackened or grilled) and stuffs it with Cajun goodies and covers it with a delightful Pontchartrain sauce. The Trout Medallions are served Cajun style as well – the two trout filets are blackened and wrapped around Cajun stuffing and topped with six blackened shrimp and Pontchartrain sauce.
the lighter appetite, try the new Crab Corn Bisque – a delicious creamy soup filled with fresh crab and kernel corn with just the right spices. Of course, if you've just got a hankering for some fresh boiled seafood, look no further than the Swamp Shack. In addition to all the boiled mudbuggs (crawfish), shrimp, crabs and lobster you could want inside the restaurant (try the Boiled Seafood Feast!), you can also order live crawfish to go or catered via Fire & Ice Crawfish. - Cont. on Page 24
A brand new appetizer that truly makes my mouth water is the Crabvocado – a half avocado deep fried to golden brown and topped with shrimp, crawfish and crab in white wine cream sauce. And for

About three years ago, with the support of my family and friends, I decided to cash in my 401k and followed my dream to be a chef… And I haven’t looked back! Experience: My grandmother was a huge influence on me, and I have been in the kitchen since I was 4 years old making cookies and whatever else. When I decided to go to cooking school, the choice was the world renowned Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Dallas and earned an Associates of Applied Science. My apprenticeship was at the five-star Stephen Pyles Restaurant and my internship followed at Morton’s Steakhouse where I was a Pantry/Pastry Cook. During this time, I was a Cook Supervisor and a Kitchen Production Manager for various hospitality management companies. I have worked hard and earned seven certifications in my field. Your Specialty and Signature Dish: Cajun cuisine with Southern comfort sex appeal. My access to heirloom recipes and creativity when tweaking recipes makes my ettoufee, bisques, gumbo, and comfort food something special. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? The list is a mighty one: Shakira, Ricky Martin, Bobby Flay, Paula Deen, Ronnie Milsap, Jerry Jones and his VIP guests, Carlos Santana, and Kid Rock (who commented it was the best Key Lime Pie he had ever eaten). Owner Leroy Ngo was raised in Seabrook and his extensive restaurant knowledge was gained while working within Golden Sea Wholesale Seafood, his family’s Seabrook business, located under the Kemah Bridge. The tried and true family flavors and satisfying food combinations ensure there is truly something for everyone during lunch or dinner. Some highlights from the vast menu include the Live Cherry Stone Clams from Oregon. They are covered in butter and steamed to perfection. The Seafood Eggrolls are wrapped with crab finger, shrimp, and fish. Master Make-up Artist

Featured Artist: Andrea Schutter
By Kelley Dawson Happy New Year! If you want to make a New Year’s resolution, now is the time. Long-time Bay Area resident and professional makeup and hair artist, Andrea Schutter says she can change your life and perceptions with the stroke of her airbrush. Her brush has touched the faces of actors such as Tom Hanks to presidents of the United States and CEOs of major oil and gas companies. A student from O’Connell Preparatory School in Galveston, Schutter is a master of air brush art. Schutter’s art started as water color and developed into stained glass. The logistical placement of shape and color soon evolved into another art form. Currently, her favorite medium is the human skin. She loves transforming the every day person into the extraordinary. “From beautifying someone for a wedding or going all out like an Avatar,” Schutter said, she revels in any body-painting transformation. She stated, “Color excites me.” Her body painting evokes movement and majesty. It’s life-like art consisting of the bone structure and skin. “It’s a live canvas,” she added. Schutter is most proud of showing people how to accentuate their best qualities. “It’s the most awarding part of my job,” she said. Schutter also added that it is much more difficult to paint on a 3-D subject such as person than canvas. She said whether it’s the face or the entire body, she strives to make her subjects comfortable and feel good about themselves. When it comes to everyday make-up artistry, Schutter shared how much she loves to show people how to accentuate their best qualities. She boasted, “It’s so empowering to build confidence in others.” Her client list is varied from Texan’s Quarterback Matt Shaub’s commercial endorsements, to Halloween party-goers wanting award-winning costumes, to brides wanting to look their most beautiful on their special day.

Fit to Be SCENE: Greg Williams
Weight loss inspires new business to help busy people lead healthy lifestyle started watching what I put into my body,” he said.
By Twila Lindblade Greg Williams knows firsthand how tough it can be to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As a business owner and manager, he is constantly on the go and doesn’t always have time to cook. Fast food and eating at fine dining restaurants can become expensive and often the restaurants do not offer a lot of healthy alternatives.
Greg lost the first 20 pounds using Crossfit and the final 40 pounds by paying attention to his meals and following the clean Paleo diet, he said. In July 2012, just 7 months after he began the new eating regimen, he decided to create Paleo Pals.
“Everything on the go is greasy and processed,” he said. After losing 60 pounds, Greg was inspired to create Paleo Pals in Seabrook. The Paleo or “caveman” diet is based on lean meats and proteins, vegetables and nutritious carbohydrates. “It is all-natural, heart healthy and clean,” Greg said. The New England Journal of Medicine, the Mayo Clinic, The American Society for Nutrition and several other resources have concluded that a Paleo lifestyle can lead to significant improvements in health, energy, and overall physical fitness. Greg weighed 272 pounds when he started the journey to become healthy. He began by using the Crossfit workout routine once a week. Crossfit is a combination of cardiovascular fitness and weight training and takes place in a group setting. “I didn’t change my eating right away, but I cut back my alcohol intake and a saw some results. Then I started doing Crossfit two times a week and saw more results. I finally
Paleo Pals offers prepared healthy meals for folks on the go. Greg insists that his food has flavor and could compete with any other restaurant. The meals are prepared using Greg’s own recipes and simple, but healthy spices. Although he follows a strict clean diet now, Greg still appreciates the good flavor of food.
AFTER
“I’m still a fat kid at heart. My food is good and it has flavor. It’s not your ordinary health food,” he said. BEFORE
Greg, who is also the general manager of Cabo Clear Lake and owner of the Smoothie Shoppe of Seabrook, admits that it is difficult to maintain workouts with such a busy lifestyle. But, he believes that many people have similar challenges and hopes Paleo Pals can aid in creating a healthier lifestyle for everyone.
“It’s really hard. I try my best to get my workouts in, and I slip up and might miss a few,” he said. Greg said despite following the Paleo or caveman-style of eating, he has never been on a diet. - Continued on Page 23

Fit to Be SCENE | Guest Columnist yond the minimum, I ask you to remember that six packs are made in the kitchen. You want to show the goods, you've got to stop eating the goods! A solid nutrition plan will turbo boost your hard work in the gym! If you want guidance, I recommend seeking the help of a professional, since there is so much contradictory advice out there! There's a study for any fad diet you can imagine, but they are all biased and not necessarily founded in valid science!
MERRY NEW YEAR!! Now that the calendar has flipped and the Mayans were wrong, let's work on the future! So we all wanna have the six pack for bikini season! Now here in South Texas that means late February, so let's get serious! First thing you need to consider is frequency. You just gotta get in the gym more! The minimum to show results in your physique is 3 times a week! Any less and you don't provide the reinforcement of activity that your body needs to burn calories adequately. Behaviorally you don't lose track of your goals. It's just so easy to put off thinking about those goals later, but later is just a formless goal and doesn't keep your eyes on the prize. Keep your initial plan in focus! Working out 3 times a week is the minimum you'll need to hit a solid goal for bikini season, and if the minimum weren't good enough, it wouldn't be the minimum, would it?
Now if you just want to fit in smaller pants for your new year's resolution (see my previous column about goal setting), then you'll want to plan for success! Plan at least 3 days per week to hit the gym – preferably non sequential days, unless you strive for hardcore mode, where you'll see 5 days in the gym. More frequent visits to the gym will grant you better results, just keep in mind that you'll need days to recover. Your recovery is just as important as your workouts. You gain more muscle in rest than overworking in the gym. A split routine will benefit you more than total body workouts if you

plan on living in the gym. This allows other body parts to rest whilst you focus on one movement group per day! For this I recommend push/pull/ squat as a breakdown. No reason you can't repeat this for two cycles per week, hitting every muscle group twice per week. Just remember, beauty is about symmetry, so you'll want to hit everything equally, so don't skip leg days, ya wimps! Keep the kegs stout! Now, GET IN THE GYM!! – Rick Hunter Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. After being an Occupational Therapy practitioner for 10 years, Rick decided to turn his focus into the preventative side of medicine. Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack: Cont. from Page 10 Last year at the peak of the season, the Swamp Shack was serving 7 to 8,000 pounds of cooked crawfish weekly! Other popular favorites include the Louisiana Swamp Gumbo – your choice of shrimp and crab or chicken and sausage, with celery, bell pepper, onion, okra, and top secret spices in a dark rich golden brown roux; a huge variety of smoked oysters, including the Smoked Pontchartrain Oysters – topped with garlic butter, Pontchartrain sauce, shrimp and Mozzarella; the Swamp Tacos – your choice of alligator, fish or shrimp (blackened, grilled or fried), with shredded cabbage, pico, cilantro, Mozzarella cheese and Cajun ranch on corn tortillas; or my personal favorite appetizer, the Alligator Eggs – six scallops wrapped in bacon and deep fried. The Swamp Shack takes its desserts seriously as well. The Brownie Explosion, the most popular dessert item on the menu, is a whopping three brownie pies topped with a mound of ice cream and drizzled with chocolate and caramel syrup. However the two new menu items may just give it a run for it's money. The Lilly Pad Key Lime Pie takes a graham cracker crust and fills it with fresh lime pie filling, covered with whipped cream and sprinkled with graham crackers. Or try the Crown Royal Bread Pudding – Thibodeaux's secret recipe mixture of cinnamon, brown sugar vanilla and Crown Royal sauce on top of bread pudding. If you like your sweets in a glass and of the alcoholic variety, you can't go wrong with Boudreaux's Ultimate Rita or the Swamp Shack Swamp Juice, which includes Rum, Coconut Rum, Melon Liqueur, Pineapple and Grenadine. For a true dessert, indulge in the Swamp Grasshopper – Green crème de mint, cream de cocoa and ice cream. Don't forget to take home a souvenir on your next trip. There's plenty of alligator merchandise including alligator heads and back scratchers; and Swamp Shack goodies such as glasses, beer koozies, t-shirts and ball caps. Coming in late January you'll be able to take Boudreaux's secret Cajun spices home with you! Located at the base of the Kemah bridge next to Molly's, Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack is a fun alternative to the restaurants along the Kemah Boardwalk. Unique and funky, the friendly atmosphere is a comfortable change of pace when compared to other high quality seafood restaurants – and with a killer view of the Kemah Marina. Live music takes place on the weekends currently; during the spring, summer and fall months there's live music seven days a week. The Swamp Shack is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Check out their highly rated Trip Advisor reviews or, for a laugh, look them up on YouTube. For more information, go to their website at www.theswampshack.com or call 281-334-5000. Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is The SCENE is the official guide to the Clear Lake, Bay Area and Galveston Entertainment Districts. also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

DYKES ON BIKES - Continued Jeppesen’s 1930’s Ford. “A bunch of lesbians on motorcycles drove by and everyone said ‘What the hell? Dykes on bikes? That would make a hell of a band name!’” said Corona. “Later on when we all got together, it was an easy decision. Most people don’t realize, until they’ve seen us perform, that we aren’t women or lesbians. But we love women all the same!”
the inspiration from that lifestyle that is the basis for our music,” said Corona. “We don’t stick to any format. If it makes you want to haul ass or break sh#t; we run with it. The performance is all about having a good time, drinking Lone Star Beer and going home covered in it.”
Dykes On Bykes has spent the past couple of years building a solid fan base. “We are very grateful to all of our fans, friends and family for all the support they have shown us in the past few years. It’s pretty damn cool to see so many people come out and support wearing your band’s shirt. We wouldn’t get anywhere if it weren’t for our amazing fans,” said Corona. As far as receiving the Buzz award, Corona said, “We were nominated last year in the same category and for best new band, but we were definitely surprised to get the win. Our music isn’t exactly radio friendly so it’s pretty bad ass to get that recognition from The Buzz, especially when you’re up against so many talented musicians. Scout Bar has helped us out tremendously by giving us the opportunity to play in front of some awesome crowds.” Corona goes on to say, “The best part to me is having the honor of working with all the great musicians in the area, the national acts from all over, and hanging out with like-minded people who share the same passion for rock and roll.” “And the worst part is the broken equipment. We are collecting a pile of destroyed guitars, pedals and PA speakers,” said guitarist Jeppesen. All in all, the “like-minded people” reference is a good way to describe the inner workings of Dykes On Bykes. The guys are local and live in the Seabrook, League City, Webster and Pasadena areas. The musicians balance full-time jobs, and building and fabricating hot rods and motorcycles for pleasure. “It’s
“It’s a ‘live fast’ lifestyle,” said Jeppesen. “Great men live dangerously; small men don't take chances... Found that on a fortune cookie!” Dykes On Bykes released their first album “Your Mom Likes My Byke” in mid-2012. “A big thanks goes out to Big Door Studios, Edwin Goldman, and Roland Belmarez,” said Corona. “It’s available at iTunes and Amazon, but we’d much rather you come party with the Dykes and come get one from us!” The band also had the opportunity to work with local musician Chris Hardy on the “Will Play For Food” compilation album. “All of the proceeds went to the Houston food bank to feed the hungry. We are always excited to give back to our community.” 2013 is going to be busy. “We’re planning on heading out to Arizona to play some supporting shows with the Moonlight Howlers whose management company is helping us to branch out to that area,” said Corona. "And we are taking some time to finish up some new ideas and music and starting to work on a new album that we hope to have out sometime later this year.” Dykes On Bykes is on ReverbNation.com and should be “liked” at www.facebook.com/dykes.bykes.

Turns out there's a spot on Cabo’s Monday Night Open Mic
the SCENE where such living is the norm and that would be at Cabo's Monday Night Open Mic. This gig starts later in the evening after many turn in for the night for work the next morning. However here, things start rolling after swing shift lets out, people arrive ready to roll and with only a few hours before the law says its time to go home. And boy, does this crowd know how to make the best of it! The music at this jam
kicks off with host band, Mama Tried, testing out a few numbers, the likes of a Phish or Grateful Dead festival - Fluidic and looooong... The stage is staffed with a bona fide sound engineer, Cisco, handling the *wide* variety of musicians coming together on complex originals in a collaborative cohesive environment. In other words - great sounding jams – the likes you'll probably never catch anywhere else but at Cabo's Monday Night Open Mic. Good stuff!
ROCK & ROLL HEAVEN - This year, we lost two musicians whom we covered in The SCENE. Mark Abrahamian, guitarist for Starship, died this year at the age of 46. Abrahamian had played since 2000 for the band, whose lineage reaches back to the 1960s with Jefferson Airplane and as Jefferson Starship in the 1980s. We lost another local musical force. IT'S A WRAP - And with that, we look ahead to the year 2013. May the coming year be your year, may your hurdles be only temporary, and may the music always be a part of your life. We'll see you out there on The SCENE!

Signature Drinks: SCOUT BAR THE DIRTY BLONDE – She’s the one who stands up front by the stage dancing and singing the words to every song the band is playing. Maybe you know her? Maybe you are her. Or for one night, you just want to be her… Chances
are you will not forget her. The “Dirty Blonde” is a shot that packs a punch with Jägermeister, peach schnapps, and pineapple juice. BIG ASS BEER – Check, check… One, two… One, two, three… It only takes $3 to get this keepsake Scout Bar glass to be used over and over again. Think more along the lines of a “band aid” and less “groupie.” For just 2 bucks a time, you get the glass filled up to the top with a cold domestic beer, or for $3, an imported one. Selections include Shiner, Blue Moon, Sam Adams, Bud Light Lime, Dos XX, etc. The lime garnish is optional, but an excellent choice! THE WILD CHILD – Whether you are with the band or not, a brand label whiskey is what legends are made of. Well, the world didn't end, and – if anything – the Mayans gave us a reason to live life to the fullest! Whew, did you ever!
During December, we joined the many SCENE readers kicking back, visiting family and friends, taking stock, sharing stories, planning the times ahead, and enjoying what our area has to offer, great places and super live music! Let's run through the month... LARGEST TURNOUT EVER - And that would be the annual Krewe du Lac Pub Crawl & Toy Drive. This year, an extra truck was brought in to handle the outrageously generous haul of toys destined to brighten lives of the most important people of all, the little ones. T-Bone Tom's did a fantastic job hosting the annual kick-off with Andy and The Dreamsicles spinning up the Fun Meter. The Dreamsicles are adding a full horn section to handle frequent song requests such as songs by Chicago. Pretty cool, eh? Keep these cats on your 2013 watch list. Should be a blast! Crawlers prevailed throughout Kemah Lighthouse District stopping along at Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack before heading over to the historical Zone 504 and Bakkhus Taverna. Hoo-boy, what a blast! You folks want in on a secret? Catch the live music acts appearing at Zone 504 as they've a great ear and eye for talent. Typically, bands first appearing on
OVER THE TOP - Enter the folks at Jackie's Brickhouse and in their consistent try-something-new manner, decided to adopt a family Photo by Jim Tacl for the Christmas holidays. My buddy and coach Jim Tacl caught what went down as the Jackie's Gang gathered a *very* healthy 5-figure collection complete with Santa for the stressed family. What is interesting about the Jackie's Brickhouse location is that it hosts some of the humdingiest benefit fundraisers around. Cheers to Jackie's Brickhouse for keeping the fire going! Speaking of keeping it going... BACK IN THE GROOVE - John and his team at Dempsey's are simply incredible. Not only do they successfully relocate to a central location in record time, they're back at it hosting parking lot parties and last month hosted a benefit for the Sandy Hook tragedy. Turn out was decent for a midweek event and the music lineup diversely solid with Dead Man's Ransom
(lyrically hitting the heart of the matter), Jacob Minter (a new eclectic free-form jazz artist), and the ever powerful and present Chris Hardy. Sonically, the new Dempsey's is more intimate and with the kitchen back in gear (including their infamous 5-pound burger challenge) could very well be Clear Lake's answer to the likes of the Mucky Duck or the Coffee Oasis, but with "an edge." OUT AND ABOUT - We were with many of you enjoying the holidays with family and friends. The groove was perfect and exactly what the doctor ordered. The Tree House threw a whale of a Christmas party with Drive Train on the stage. Fortunately, we didn't need The Tree - Continued on Page 38

The Dope Show – A Tribute To Marilyn Mason
“WE’RE ALL STARS NOW IN THE DOPE SHOW!” By Rhonda Meredith Four years ago, an idea came to life and The Dope Show, a Marilyn Manson tribute band, performed for the first time on stage. “It was for fun,” said founder and vocalist Chris Navasatis who goes by “The Rev” in this case. “We didn’t sing his singles or hits… It was more of Manson’s obscure songs that he really didn’t do live.”
tion against buying into fame, and mass culture. Further references are made to the obvious attractions and glamour of the world of stardom, obsession, and the absurdity of such a world. Manson chides society for partaking in Andy Warhol's prediction that everyone "will be world-famous for fifteen minutes." Manson declares that "we're all stars now, in the dope show." The song was nominated for a 1999 Grammy award. Redemption Photo graphy X
Fast forward to the end of 2012 and The Dope Show makes its reappearance with renewed vigor to the delight of area Manson fans with an updated hard driving, surrealistic stage show. Navasatis said he has the best of both worlds since he is also the founder of ERASETHEVIRUS, an original industrial metal band that is wildly popular in the Houston area. But what is it about Marilyn Manson specifically that lures in legions of fans, including Navasatis? “Manson and I sound the same already. Plus, my band members aren’t scared to wear the makeup. And like a paradox, it may be about the money.” The name "The Dope Show" is a song from Manson's 1998 album Mechanical Animals, also released in September of that year as the album's lead single. It is described as "a full bump and grind song with a stripper beat." In keeping with the album's themes of narcissism and consumerism, the lyrics are an admoni-
“We bring out all of the props, outfit changes, stilts, etc.” said Navasatis.”But we always want people to know that it is ERASETHEVIRUS doing Manson and in our kind of way.” Rounding out the members of The Dope Show is Epoc on keyboards, Mangy on bass, Josh 5 on guitar, and the infamous Slay on drums. Manson reminds us in song and lyrics that life is not about being a sheep of the world, it's about the momentum of fans that believe and embrace the sub-culture of the individual, which actually is where the real culture is.
The Dope Show will be headlining at Scout Bar on Saturday, January 12. For more information about the band or show, visit www.Facebook.com/TheDopeShowTX or the venue at www.ScoutBar.com.

ENERGIZER THA DJ - Continued then I practiced until I felt comfortable.” The charismatic DJ has earned the honor of being INDMIX.com’s “DJ of The Year” and has performed at venues in major cities like Hollywood, Miami, Orlando, Springfield, Charlotte, New York, Chicago, DC, Las Vegas, all over Louisiana, and has sold out crowds all throughout the Southeast Texas region. ENERGIZER THA DJ has created over 50 mix tapes and owns a highly extensive music collection of mp3’s and a quantity of “a good 1,000 vinyl records.” He doesn’t specifically favor any one particular artist because it’s the “actual energy that comes from the records” that matters.
and don't fear the competition because great athletes make other great athletes better. It’s the same with DJ’ing.”
It may appear that DJ’ing is simple. You just get up and spin a few records, right? “For the most part it may look easy, but DJ’ing is highly demanding, even with the most fundamental skill set. There's a certain level of focus and concentration that's involved in the craft and I'm real big on moods and energy, so it's imperative that I'm in a good place (mentally) while entertaining others! The best part of the job is being able to express yourself through music.” ENERGIZER THA DJ has stood apart from the crowd with his drive to succeed in his craft. He takes advantage of the technology available and his “set up” is basically “an industry standard” with “a few secret weapons” that make him “stand out sonically” and “trademark his brand.”
His positive outlook is essential to live the life he strives to lead. “Just be the best ‘you’ that you can be. Love yourself and respect others.... Cherish what they have to offer and all the knowledge that can be gained. Always bring something to the table so that others can learn from you. You don't have to know where the stairs will end for you to take the next step! This is how I see life as ever changing and forever evolving into new twists, turns, and probabilities.” The New Year is shaping up to be another anthem year with appearances in Hollywood and Puerto Rico coming up, All-Star weekend in Houston, the Super Bowl in New Orleans, and heading back overseas! ENERGIZER THA DJ stays busy heading up his business Eardrum Productions/ Go DJ Music Group as well. Catch ENERGIZER THA DJ locally at Pier 27 Tavern. “I love the whole Pier 27 crew. They treat me like family and love my art and craft. Their high expectations in me as an artist make me strive to be a better DJ every time I perform. Must love dogs! When not at work, she regularly takes all three of her dachshunds to the dog park.
Her signature drink to make is Sex With An Alligator. (They say once you go alligator… Never mind!) This tasty beverage has a fruity flavor made with a melon flavored liqueur, Razzamatazz on the bottom, Jägermeister on the top, and a splash of pineapple juice.
Are dogs better than men? She smiles and says “Well, they don’t talk back!”
A Red Raider at heart! Lindsay was living in Lubbock and pursuing a business marketing degree from Texas Tech. And now, with only a year left, she is considering finishing her degree at the University of Houston.
It’s a new year - Lindsay won’t be missing 2012 and resolves to have more fun, have peace, and live simply in 2013.
No to snow! The La Porte native is happier with beach weather rather than cold, snowy weather. She prefers movies over books. Lindsay doesn’t like

Yellow may be her favorite color, but… Lindsay predicts the Houston Texans will take their “Battle Red” far into the playoffs.
Some of her favorite music is from: Norah Jones, Linkin Park, Jack Johnson, and Michael Buble. You may not know… She loves seafood and scrapbooking!

MATTIA’S TRATTORIA PIANO BAR: A Warm Atmosphere Where Fun Takes Center Stage By Rhonda Meredith Within Mattia’s Trattoria Piano Bar’s rustic setting at 3202 Marina Bay Drive in Kemah is a celebration of Italian culture with food, drink, and live musical entertainment. Houston’s own premier multi-talented musician Daniel Rose and his “orchestra” performs each night beginning at 7:30 p.m. Rose has been playing music for over 50 years and is skilled in the art of playing the keyboards, guitar, sax, flute, conga drums, and oboe. Often he trades out these instruments in the same song! Rose adds new songs to his repertoire weekly, takes requests and features local talent on a rotating basis. "The fresh music and changing line up keeps the entertainment interesting and up-beat,” said Mattia’s Trattoria Piano Bar owner Mattia D’Errico. On most Friday and Saturday nights, the smooth croons of Phil Johnson, also widely known as the Barry White of Houston, can be heard alongside the beautiful vocals of songstress Liberty. However, you may find Liberty, who has a flair with the Latino crowd, as well as other singers and entertainers performing on additional nights as well. Other popular musicians and singers perform at Mattia’s such as singers Patty Valencia and Mickey Hobbs, Jazz saxophonist Donald Bonner, guitarist Greg Tillman, and pianist Mike McCulloch. You can even catch the band “Andy & The Dreamsicles” performing a few times each month on varying nights. Visit www.ItalianPianoBar.com for the most current information.
ties among family and friends. In fact, no one who enters an Italian home should fail to receive an offering of food and drink. And it is no different at Mattia’s Trattoria Piano Bar. “Our house is your house,” said D’Errico. Mattia’s Chef Laurence Weddel prepares D’Errico’s tried and true family recipes from Naples, Italy. All of Mattia’s dishes find favor in pairing up with a selection from the restaurant’s extensive and unique wine list. The wine varieties are from different regions of Italy, California, Oregon, and Washington State selections with local and other Texas wines coming soon! “We also offer personal temperature controlled wine lockers and sell any wine at our wholesale cost with a slight corkage fee when we serve the bottle at their table,” said D’Errico. “If there is a special wine that you desire, we will order it for your occasion, with enough advance notice.” Mattia’s Trattoria Piano Bar has just started serving a variety of espresso drinks and will soon offer Italian pastries from D’Errico’s home town Gloversville, New York. This sounds good any time during the day or night! On Mondays through Wednesdays, happy hour is from 5 to 7 p.m. Complimentary ballroom dance lessons are offered after happy hour on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 8 p.m. Mattia’s celebrates Ladies Night on Thursdays with half off well drinks, wines & beers, margaritas and martinis.
It’s a distinctly laid back and warm atmosphere where feeling as part of the “family” and having a good time takes center stage.
Mattia’s opens earlier for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays at 11 a.m. An extended happy hour starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.
In the Italian culture, food is a means for establishing and maintaining

DYKES ON BYKES:
Who You Need To Know About • Right Now!
By Rhonda Meredith Dykes On Bykes is a Bay Area high speed rock and roll band comprised of members who have a fondness for Lone Star Beer, hot rods, motorcycles, and a passion for music. 2012 was a break out year for Dykes On Bykes as they opened up for Reverend Horton Heat during the inaugural year of Ratstock, as well as Public Image Ltd. at Scout Bar, became sponsored by Lone Star Beer, and released an album. The band was recently bestowed with the 2012 Best Punk/Hardcore/Indie Band of the Year award from the 94.5 Texas Buzz show. Deserving of the accepted award are members Matt Fuentes (guitars, vocals,) Farrell Jeppesen (guitar,) Derrick Mauk (bass,) and Brad Corona (drums.) Dykes On Bykes has been around for about five years with the current line-up having been together 2.5 years. “We started VERY small, practicing in friends' garages, and taking every opportunity to play.
Rat Ranch Thurs.-Sat., Jan. 10-12 SHERLOCKS
Originally, our performances were all about seeing how loud we could be and how many people we could piss off,” said drummer Brad Corona. “Swinging from rafters and setting things on fire were pretty normal. Since then, I really feel like we’ve developed our own style. Not much has changed on stage, but we take a lot of pride in our music.” The band’s unique and catchy name came about when Jeppesen and Fuentes were working on - Continued on Page 35

ENERGIZER THA DJ: KEEPING DIVERSE MUSIC LOVERS ENTERTAINED By Rhonda Meredith There is something very special about ENERGIZER THA DJ. The hardworking and talented DJ has appeared on Master of The Mix (Season 2) on BET/Centric Networks, My Sweet Sixteen on MTV, Basketball Wives of L.A. on VH1, and has opened for the certified Platinum and Gold American rapper and recording artist Lil Wayne. In fact, ENERGIZER THA DJ convinced Lil Wayne and fellow rapper Swiss Beatz to perform as he DJ’d the performance at Beyonce’s little sister Solange’s birthday party. ENERGIZER THA DJ makes multiple monthly appearances at Pier 27 Tavern on 3202 Marina Bay Drive
in South Shore Harbour. “The crowd at Pier 27 Tavern is a very diverse crowd. My first night at Pier 27, I recall playing at least six genres of music! In my craft, it has helped me appreciate a place like Pier 27 because you never know what exactly you’re going to get. The crowd loves their music! As a DJ, you couldn't ask for a better situation.... They are diverse music lovers.” The Houston native graduated from Willowridge High School in 2001 and Texas Southern University in 2005. He has been DJ’ing for eight years now. “I literally picked up the basic concepts of DJ’ing from watching and observing DJ’s through the years.
