Pod-Zu’s at Clifton By The Sea:

“THE BAY’S BEST KEPT SECRET” By Rhonda Meredith Come as you are, and enjoy Cajun classic cuisine in Pod-Zu’s friendly, family atmosphere. The restaurant is located right across from Galveston Bay at 10 Grand Avenue in Bacliff and has been nicknamed “the Bay’s Best-Kept Secret.” The restaurant originally began three years ago in Texas City as Pod-Zu’s Crawfish Shed. The popular family destination recently re-located to the former location of Bacliff’s iconic Clifton’s By the Sea. Business partners Chad Conner, Darryl Veron, and Carole Barnett have put much heart into making the restaurant a place where families can go. Conner grew up in Louisiana and was raised on Cajun food that was seasoned with his family’s spice combinations and cooked with love. Pod-Zu’s is a reflection of his upbringing where family, friends, and food were high on the priority list. In fact, the word “podzu’s” means “my friends” in Cajun slang. Veron was raised in Lake Charles, La., and moved to the Clear Lake area in

THE SCENE

1990 after living in New Orleans for two years. “Growing up in Louisiana, it's not uncommon to have the guys cooking as much, if not more than the girls. Hey, that’s how I'd impress my dates! I'd whip up a gumbo, jambalaya, ettouffe or fry some seafood and the girls would love it!” said Veron. “Although I really love and enjoy the Bay Area, I have always felt like something was missing. Anytime we had gatherings back in Louisiana, there were always family, good friends, great Cajun food and live music. Pod-Zu’s brings those good times and nostalgia to fruition in the Clear Lake Area.” The heart of the kitchen is Chef Carole Barnett. She said she has “been in the kitchen since I was four years old making cookies.” Barnett studied at the worldrenowned Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Dallas. She believes what makes her ettoufee, bisques, gumbo, and comfort food something special is the powerful combination of having access to heirloom recipes and creativity when tweaking traditional recipes. “We are driven to satisfy our customers,” said Conner. “We use quality ingredients and strive to be consistent with service as well as food. If you do your best consistently, everything else will take care of itself.” Pod-Zu’s has a “million-dollar view of the bay” as Conner puts it, and a bright color theme that contrasts against chrome colored accents and palm trees that sway in the bay breeze. Whether you choose to dine inside or outside, the setting is a perfect complement for a taste of authentic-tasting Cajun recipes. - Continued on Page 18

Featured Artist: Pat Rawlings

By Kelley Dawson

For more than 30 years, space illustrator and designer, Pat Rawlings has been telling the stories of humans exploring space with his realistic renderings. His imagery captures not only his audience, but also the future in the final frontier. Rawlings creations are Space City icons recognized world-wide. His images mix creativity and imagination with scientific and technical accuracy as Rawlings consults with experts to create as he stated “a sense of being there.” His renderings are strangely familiar in the way they engage the viewer. Rawlings makes space seem comfortable and feel obtainable. The University of Houston Clear Lake graduate lived in the Bay Area for more than 20 years. It’s fitting that most of those years Rawlings lived in El Lago; which unofficially boasts of having more astronauts living there per capita than any other city in the world. Though currently residing in the Texas Hill Country, Rawlings still designs projects locally for the Johnson Space Center and the Houston Economic Partnership. His latest project was a four-sided mural based on one of his space-scapes inside an elevator in Building 15 of the Johnson Space Center. Rawlings said stepping into the elevator is like walking into one of his paintings. He added, that once the elevator doors close, “you’re encased in a piece of artwork.” Many of Rawlings works adorn the Johnson Space Center including a sixty-foot long mural in the Building 11 cafeteria and

several graphics of planets backlit with LEDs. Additionally, his conceptual art of future planetary missions is on display at the Kennedy Space Center. Rawlings’ largest framed project hangs majestically in the grand lobby of the Gilruth Center and depicts the general future of space exploration. Rawlings stated that his artwork “for all of the NASA Centers reflects more than a quarter century of space exploration plans, ranging from robotic planetary missions to the human exploration of Mars and beyond.” - Continued on Page 23

FEBRUARY 2013

By Peggy Taylor Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre (BAHBT) will have a new production that will be featured at Space Center Houston and Johnson Space Center. BAHBT will kick off the 2013 season with Celestial Mechanics, which is a perfect ballet for these new venues. The two nights of performances are February 22 and 23 at Space Center Houston in the Destiny Theatre where dancers will transport you through the universe with a collection of innovative works that are as uncommon and thought provoking as the stars and planets themselves. BAHBT is excited to announce that Clear Lake native Miral Kotb and iLuminate will perform in Celestial Mechanics at 7 p.m. on both nights and tickets may be purchased online at bahbt.org or by calling 281-480-1617. Guest choreographers Ayman Harper and Miral Kotb, both BAHBT alumnae, will present the pieces for Celestial Mechanics. Ayman is from the Clear Lake area and has danced with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Netherlands Dance Theater II, Frankfurt Ballet and The Forsythe Company. Although he resides in Berlin, he is very involved in the Houston dance and performance communities, creating work for Houston's Dominic Walsh Dance Theater and BAHBT. Ayman brought his project The Lid to Houston from Berlin, which uses objects, bodies and space to make sounds and dance, collaborated with the music group Matmos. Additionally, Miral Kotb will present choreography, as well as perform with iLuminate for Celestial Mechanics using her special combination of dance, computer science and technology. Miral is best known for her creation of her company iLuminate, which came in 2nd place on America’s Got Talent, and gained her national recognition. If you remember the group from TV, she created the technology for dancers to perform in the dark wearing costumes that illuminate wirelessly to complement the music and choreography. Miral holds a degree in computer science from Columbia University and her technology has been used by the Black Eyed Peas during the Super Bowl Half Time Show, as well as by R&B star Chris Brown.

Fun, Fitness and Philanthropy: Jackie’s Brickhouse Running Club Travis Isenberg, a running friend of Lee’s helped create the Jackie’s Brickhouse affiliate club in 2011 and now the group has close to 200 members.

By Twila Lindblade Running has become a popular hobby. It’s a sport that anyone can do with a pair of running shoes. There is no equipment required, and it can be done on a trail, on the street, in a park or even on a gravel road. Either as a hobby or a part of one’s workout routine, running can quickly be removed on our to-do list. For most people, balancing a healthy lifestyle with work, family and other interruptions is extremely challenging. One local group, the Jackie’s Brickhouse Running Club, aims to combine fun and fitness in a non-intimidating environment. “The motivation was to create a stronger culture of fitness,” said David Lee, group founder. “I wanted to make it fun for all fitness levels.” Lee, who is an avid runner and triathlete, said he began researching running clubs in the Houston area four years ago and discovered that many of the clubs could be overwhelming to a novice athlete or person interested in taking up running as a hobby.

The running club meets at Jackie’s Brickhouse in Kemah each Wednesday at 6 p.m. to run together, eat and socialize. The group runs about 3.2 miles, running various routes around the Clear Lake Shores and Kemah area. “Jackie’s Brickhouse is our host. They have been gracious to donate post-run snacks like pasta, salads and fish. They also offer drink specials, so we can have fun and congregate.” Jackie’s Brickhouse Running Club has about 30 to 50 members who run each week, which fluctuates depending on the weather and time of year, Lee said. He hopes the amount of members continues to grow. “Our lives are so busy, that I think fitness and taking care of ourselves becomes pushed to the side,” he said. “It is my hope that combining fitness and fun can make those things a priority.”

“I wanted it to be easier to join and low-key,” he said. Lee created Brian O’Neill’s Running Club (BON Running Club) in Rice Village and the club grew to more than 8,000 members in 4 years. The success of the first club inspired Lee and his friends to create other affiliate clubs with the same goal in mind, and eventually it all transpired into FFP (Fun, Fitness and Philanthropy) Running Clubs.

22

Another component of the FFP Running Clubs is philanthropy. Each of the affiliate running clubs raises money for local charitable organizations. While membership to the FFP club is free, they often host fundraisers benefitting nonprofit agencies.

PAT RAWLINGS: Continued from Page 19 Rawlings shared that he still enjoys creating conceptual art for a living, but also likes doing different work repurposing previous paintings in larger formats such as the murals. “It’s very cool to see my paintings bigger than you are,” he said. Rawlings’ art career began in his hometown of Greenville, Texas as a technical illustrator for an airborne command post for a cold war era 747. He later moved to the Galveston area and heard about a technical illustrator job at the Johnson Space Center painting about future exploration in space. “I couldn’t believe you could get paid to make science fiction renderings at NASA. It seemed like such a cool place to work,” stated Rawlings. He said that he read lots of science fiction as a kid and was intrigued by future space exploration. Rawlings creates his compositions using three main mediums including acrylics, sketches and 2-D and 3-D computer concepts and animation. To tell a story of human exploration, Rawlings said he builds space machines with the computer by scanning in drawings and painting using a digitizing pad and stylus. “It’s freehand with a computer and works to an advantage for me,” he added. According to Rawlings, his paintings and digital designs have been reproduced in hundreds of magazines, books, television programs and films both nationally and internationally. Rawlings fancies himself as a visual storyteller. He hopes to engage people in wanting to explore space whether by joining NASA or simply living vicariously through others. Rawlings said he tries to “tell a story to get people to feel a part of itto make them feel the future holds promise for them as well.” View more of the works by space visionary Pat Rawlings by visiting his website at www.patrawlings.com.

BREAKING THROUGH A PLATEAU Howdy Y'all! So you've survived the New Year's rush at the gym, been working out like a fiend, eating like a monk, and now you've noticed the results are either slowing down or stopped altogether. This is called a plateau. It happens when your body adapts to whatever stress you place upon it. It's actually a good sign, meaning your hard work has been paying off, and you are now strong enough for your body to get bored with that level of challenge. Breaking through a plateau isn't really that hard. There are several ways to do so. The simplest is to just lift more/heavier weight. There will come a time when the risk behind this will outweigh the benefits, however, especially if you haven't set a strength goal for yourself. Changing pretty much any variable will help break through plateaus, be it increasing weight, sets, reps, using different exercises, working out more or less often, or even changing the style of workout, for instance, trying crossfit versus traditional weight training. I like to remind my clients that the easiest way to break through a plateau is to FIT TO BE SCENE from Page 22 “Most people want to donate time or money to charitable causes, but they don’t always have the time,” Lee said. “This allows us to have fun doing some-

not do the same workout twice. Your routine should be anything but. Always performing different exercises at varying weights, reps and sets will keep your muscles from adapting and consistently improving through either strength, calorie burning, flexibility, or endurance. We all have pet exercises that we like to do because we're good at them. The challenge is to step away from them and try different exercises to stress the muscles differently. The same philosophy applies to cardio plateaus. When you notice you aren't sweating as much, out of breath as much or that your heart rate doesn't get as high, you've probably adapted to your current cardio regimen, and it's time to change. Cardio changes can be as simple as going faster, working at an incline, adding more resistance or even more time to your cardio routine. Another way to shock the body into continued improvement would be to think outside the box – walking/running backwards or even trying some side shuffling on the treadmill, pedalling backwards on the bike or elliptical machine, going short/long step on stairmasters.

Breaking through a plateau is really quite simple, the hard part is realizing you've hit one. People tend to be content when something gets easier, and will continue at that level until they quit due to lack of results. If you want to continue showing progress toward these goals you've set for yourself, you will have to continue to challenge yourself... One of the best motivational memes I've seen lately says it perfectly “It never gets easier, you get stronger.” So keep pushing towards the goal and remember to GET IN THE GYM!!! – Rick Hunter Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. LAKEWOOD TO HOST J/105 MID-WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP J/105 Fleet Captain and Lakewood Yacht Club racer Bill Lakenmacher has announced that Lakewood will host the national J/105 Mid-Winter Championship Regatta to be held March 8-10 on Galveston Bay. “We are very pleased to once again have this regatta come to the Houston area as they did last year,” related Lakenmacher. Before 2012, the J/105 MidWinters were held in Key West, Florida. Last year, the top four trophies were captured by Lakewood racers. Hoping for approximately 20-25 J/105 regatta participants from around the country, race organizers are looking forward to three days of “as much racing as possible” said J/105 racer Bee Bednar. It will be a windward/leeward course with the first gun at 10 a.m. all three days. Cost for the regatta is $350 which entitles racers to a free crane to splash their boats into the water, a Saturday night dinner and party along with the Sunday awards ceremony following the last race. Those who arrive early will enjoy the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Wednesday. For further information and to register for the regatta which is open to the public, please check Lakewood’s website at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com under the racing button.

PURPLE HAVEN EMPORIUM: Romantic Lingerie & More! By Rae Drady When doing romantic Valentine’s Day shopping this year, there is a new place to check out in Webster. Purple Haven Emporium Smoke Shop was opened in mid-July right next to Big Texas Dance Hall by a mother and daughter team, and sells more than just smoking accessories. Purple Haven Emporium also has a large unique selection of romantic lingerie and hosiery, as well as, novelties, DVDs, games, 3-in-1 candles, massage oils/lotions and personal enhancers. The store is celebrating Valentine’s Day with a sale on all Lingerie, hosiery and novelties, 10% OFF until February 14. Store Manger Lauren Chapman says, “We proudly offer service with a smile in a relaxed boutique environment without the high

boutique prices!” The store carries adult novelties from blush novelties and penthouse and many more, and lingerie from extra small to plus size, with special orders available. Debbie Rogers says, “We wanted to kind of go back a bit to when shops weren't just shops, they were Emporiums. We feel like the word emporium opens the door to every class of people. We are heavily influenced by the 1920s and ‘30s when service was of the utmost importance. Our goals are to maintain customer service, confidentiality, and also have a fun place for people to shop.” She adds, “After searching for 6 months, we found this spot (803 E. NASA Pkwy.) and were very excited because we felt like we were in the heart of Clear Lake, and we feel like that's where our heart is. We have lived in the Clear Lake Area for over 10 years and have enjoyed living next to the water. Honestly, I don't think we could move anywhere else and be as happy as we are living here.” Purple Haven Emporium, of course, also has bachelorette party supplies, and a wide selection of smoking accessories, including hookahs, carved wooden boxes, and shisa, with or without tobacco. They also permit local artists to sell work on consignment. Lauren adds, “Our future plans for the store are to incorporate more local artists, and expand into stones and meditation. We may go further into ‘new age’ supplies.”

Jimisu’s Beauties and Dolls • From Page 39 Jimisu and her Beauties and Dolls are promoting their collection of 2013 calendars as Houston Strikes Out against Animal Hunger & Cruelty: Bearing Our Skin to Save Theirs, Beauties on Bikes, Pin-ups for Pets, and Jimisu and her Hot Rod Beauties! These brand new calendars will be on sale and the Beauties and Dolls will be on hand to sign them and take pictures. Live and silent auctions will be held, too – all in an effort to support local "No Kill” animal shelters. 100% of the net proceeds of the 2013 calendar will benefit animal shelters throughout Houston. The funds raised go toward veterinary costs; including spaying/neutering, heart worm prevention, vaccinations and micro-chipping. A ticket to the Puppy Love Fundraiser will include a buffet dinner and two drink tickets. Rat Ranch will be performing live as well. Balko says her overall dream is to one day raise enough money to open her own animal rescue shelter. So, won’t you be a Valentine and support the cause? Jackie’s Brickhouse • 1053 Marina Bay Drive

The beauty of Valentine’s Day isn’t about chocolate or jewelry. It’s about love – or rather, “puppy love” to be exact. Jeremy Kilgore • from Page 56 In addition to the acoustic styling, Kilgore is a part of the Ron Jeremy Band and Elevate The Son. The Ron Jeremy Band is a classic rock cover band with a little bit of country and some ‘90s music (Breaking Benjamin, Seether) thrown in. Its name resembles an infamous celebrity, but that’s only coincidental. Kilgore (vocals, guitar) is joined onstage with drummer Ronny Glenn and the band’s name reflects the musician’s first names. The duo prides themselves having a full band sound. Elevate The Son, a Christian Band with an edge, began when two guys who were performing at the same place, same night were seated together at a table. Their discussion revealed a mutual love of music and a collaboration was formed. Under the Tate Music Group record label, Elevate The Son made an EP titled “Reflection.” Limited copies are available as the band is working on new material as well as a new record. The members of Elevate The Son are Kilgore (guitar, vocals,) Josh Holder (vocals, guitar,) Clay Hamm (bass,) and Bobby Levy (drums.) Be sure to check out Elevate The Son's Android Mobile App!

Writing has helped me get through the bad times in life.” Kilgore says he loves the Bay Area music scene because “area bands have talent and diversity.” He also “is impressed with the venues and owners” and “would not want to play anywhere else.” 2013 is going to be a really good year for him. “I just bought a home in League City. I am playing more shows and entertaining a wide audience.” In February, you can catch Kilgore or the Ron Jeremy Band at a couple of their regular venues like Fatty’s (Seabrook) and Roger’s Bar & Grill (League City,) and at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack (Kemah) in March. Visit Facebook and “like” Jeremy Kilgore Official, Ron Jeremy Band, and Elevate The Son for the latest show information.

The career highlights for the 32-year-old musician are getting a record contract with Elevate The Son and self-producing “On Transition,” an independent album. “It took a couple of years to get it done, but every song takes you through a different emotion and different aspects of life,” Kilgore said. A favorite song of his off this album is “Without You.” He says, “It is a powerful song, and lyrically, it is the best I have written.” Writing songs is thera-

When we caught word he would be filling in for Danny D at the Hourglass show at the Cock-eyed Seagull, we knew we had to check it out. Wow, did word get out... The Seagull was *packed*. We enjoyed a treat hearing Lee on bass, harp and vocals and as usual, Hourglass brought out several pieces that have withstood the test of time that you never hear performed live. Lee Jolly, music of the ages, the Seagull - Clearly here for the long haul. CONCERT FOR STEPHEN ARTHUR - We cover the annual Fab 40 event and when Stephen’s concert was announced, we knew we had to be there. A full house of musicians and friends from across the state arrived at Dan Electro's for the perfect gathering on the most perfect day in January. - More on Page 41

Earlier in the evening, Zach broke strings on both acoustics. Borrowing a spare Strat from Rivera (Green Parrot fame) the man went fully electric and simply sizzled. Bringing it north was word of Pirate Radio playing at Dempsey's. This was an area favorite with a strong vocal presence by Erik Garza. We thought the band hung it up when Garza went on to star in his new leading roll as "Pop." Boy, were we surprised... Dizzy Hayz and David Wolfe of the original band has reinvented the group bringing in keyboards, frontline vocals, and a completely revamped playlist which includes funk, disco, pop and dance. Dempsey's and Pirate Radio - Two reinventions for the new year, two SCENE Party Ready players, two good scores. While on reinvention, Rhonda Meredith and I both had similar ideas when we both arrived to cover Fatty's and the Ron Jeremy Band. Jeremy Kilgore was my slant as we caught him about a year ago at Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack scoring him as one of the best sounding shows of the year. Since then, Kilgore's taken over on acoustic and vocals plus added drums to the mix. Andy Upchurch always hinted "Pay attention to two piece groups - There's little room for error and they've ‘got’ to be good". Wise words... We'll let Rhonda give you readers the entire run down on this new group. Powerful, passionate and artistic comes to mind for now.

The Cock & Bull - Continued From Previous Page First, the beer selection is constantly changing and Mac admits he uses "any and every beer distributor" he can to keep the selection fresh and unique. So unique that he often has to make his own tap handles, as the distributors haven’t always been able to get him the proper hardware before the keg is empty. “I’m not in love with anything, so I always switch out the selection,” Mac said. “People come in, and that’s the first question, ‘What’s new?’ My answer is ‘Everything!’ I will always keep some English beers on draft, but there is more excitement regarding American craft beers right now. The English beers have been around for hundreds of years in some cases, and everyone knows what they taste like.” Second, there is no Bud, Miller or Coors (BMC) available in the place – draft or bottle – by design. Mac explains it goes back to getting people to try new things. Especially if their idea of a quality beer is one of the mass-produced light lagers that utilize inferior ingredients and a brewing process that limits flavor and taste instead of the opposite. “Sometimes, I initially get a negative reaction when someone orders a Bud or Miller and is told we don’t serve them,” Mac said. “But I do everything in my power to find a quality craft beer they will enjoy, and it almost always works out and everyone is happy.” Tap Audit: The beers available on draft during my visit included a surprisingly high number of offerings both not available elsewhere locally and which *this* beer enthusiast had never tried. It was especially impressive considering there are only 11 taps, though, I’m told more will soon be added. It’s also a clear illustration of how much quality beer is missed by allowing the various mass-produced offerings of BMC to dominate a venue's selection. The lineup on this visit was Anthem Cider Works (Oregon); Guinness (Dublin, Ireland); Newcastle Brown Ale (England); Avery Old Jubulation Trail (Boulder, CO); Storm King Russian Imperial Stout – Victory Brewing (Downingtown, PA); Monks Café

Flemish Sour – Bavik Brewery (Belgium); Independence ESB (Austin, TX); Squatters IPA (Salt Lake City, UT); Old Speckled Hen – Morland Brewery (UK); Eagle Claw Fist – Clown Shoes (Ipswich, MA) and Triple Exultation – Ell River Brewery (Fortuna, CA). During my visit, a couple patrons started enlisting others to order Newcastle to finish off the almost-empty keg so its replacement in waiting, Fullers ESB, which has been named the “Champion Beer of Britain,” could be put on draft. Mac admits that sometimes he gets carried away when ordering beer. "At one point, I realized I didn't have a single IPA (India Pale Ale) on draft but had three stouts,” he said. Aiding the perfect storm of craft beer excitement that I witnessed from staff and patrons at Cock & Bull is the fact that the only homebrew shop south of the 610 Loop is located just across the street (B&S Brewers Guild, 3560 NASA Parkway). The couple next to me had just picked up some ingredients at B&S for their next homebrew before stopping in at The Cock & Bull for some craft beer and dinner. Their food looked amazing and had me regretting the dinner commitment I was ultimately late to. But stay tuned to a future issue of The SCENE for more about the food at The Cock & Bull, as well as more must-visit venues for your next craft beer excursion.

Your CRAFT BEER Hunting Guide The scene is a relatively new British Pub in Seabrook. Multiple English accents are immediately overheard (including from the owner) upon entering which quickly assures me The Cock & Bull British Pub & Restaurant (3659 NASA Parkway) isn't any random watering hole in with a British Pub facade. I take a seat at the massive round bar that spans an area previously divided into two separate lease spaces just months ago. This beautiful bar is just one example of the impressive, if not beautiful, build-out and décor that wipes away any evidence of the two previous restaurants (Mely's Mexican Restaurant and Emily's New American Bistro) that once operated from this address.

Mac, The Cock & Bull’s Beer Expert (And Bartender Nick as “The Hunted”)

The bar wraps around two – soon to be more – groupings of beer taps. The resident beer expert, Mac, is dressed to impress in a visually dense but pleasing style of fashion not often found around this pond. “A lot of people come in and look around and think the place is really ritzy, but it’s not, and I only dress like this because I enjoy it,” Mac explains with a laugh. “Come in and make yourself at home. This is supposed to be a pub – a real pub where you sit, hangout for a couple hours, talk and meet new people.” Mac is a practicing architect who has lived in Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and the far less impressive city of Dallas, before landing locally to write his thesis at the University of Houston. He jokes that he isn’t sure how he ended up working at the bar, “How did this happen?” he questions with a smile. “But I really enjoy it. I love talking to people, and I really love the beer part.” He openly displays an intoxicating love of beer as impressive as his retro mustache. “The objective is to get as many people trying as many different good beers as possible,” Mac explains. The Cock & Bull currently offers 11 beers on draft and another 50-plus in bottles.

T-BONE TOM’S

Celebrating 39 Years of a True Texas Treasure But, T-Bone Tom’s tasty treasures aren’t just found in their food menu. T-Bone’s claims one of the best-priced weekday happy hours in the Bay Area. The establishment carries 25 bottled domestic and imported beers. They also offer a hefty draft beer choices. TBone’s stocks an impressive selection of cordials, liquors, spirits and wines including several signature drinks. The signature drinks featured on the magazine cover consist of the yard swirl margarita, a perfect Bloody Mary, and the Voodoo which is made with five Cruzan Rums and served in a keepsake bucket. It’s a great tropical drink to share with friends under the large outdoor palapa while enjoying another T-Bone specialty – their live music. The outdoor patio is comfortable, spacious and well-protected with the largest truebuilt palapa in the State.

By Kelley Dawson T-Bone Tom’s has withstood the taste-test of time with their slow-smoked barbecue cooked on real oak logs. They’ve been cooking the same way since 1974 and until recently had been using the original pit. TBone’s is currently using their second pit in thirty-nine years. The iconic restaurant cooks everything including brisket, pork, ribs and sausage on the pit all night every day. Anna Kennedy manages T-Bone Tom’s and is proud of continuing the restaurant’s commitment to fresh, quality food. She said everything is homemade. “We start fresh every morning from the gumbo to the sides and the gravy,” added Kennedy. She boasts that none of the meat they serve is ever frozen. Kennedy should know. She has been with the restaurant since it opened in January of 1974. Kennedy shared that they recently switched to certified Angus beef which is used in all of the meat dishes including their Chicken Fried Steak. She said, “It’s really good meat and the closest to USDA Prime with affordable prices.” Kennedy suggests the pulled pork with grilled onions and jalapeños as well. Their signature stamp of quality and freshness is steadfast. Besides providing the best food at the lowest possible price, Kennedy stated that T-Bone’s strives to keep regulars and new customers coming back. The restaurant offers $7.99 weekday lunch specials and nightly dinner specials. Plus, the management staff works hard every day to hire and train good employees. T-Bones’ secret to consistent food lies in their expert kitchen staff; many of whom have been employed there for over 15 years with some up to 30 years. “We don’t want anyone unhappy,” Kennedy explained. She did admit when the restaurant gets busy that sometimes mistakes happen. “It’s just human nature,” she said. Kennedy even wants to know if they “put a tomato on the wrong side of the salad bowl.” In November of 2009, one year after Hurricane Ike, T-Bone Tom’s was featured on The Food Network’s show "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" making the restaurant and specifically their now-famous Armadillo Eggs and homemade sausage known across the United States. “We meet people from all over the country,” Kennedy said.

THE SCENE

Every weekend and some weekdays through the month of February talented bands and musicians will perform on T-Bone’s outdoor LandShark Stage. According to Kennedy, starting in March the live band line-up will return to six days a week: Tuesdays through Sundays. She said Sundays will be mostly dedicated to Country and Western music. Additionally, Kennedy said that T-Bone’s will serve a special Valentine’s Dinner of two 8-ounce tenderloins with sides for only $49.95 and live music with the Grateful Geezers Band. Kennedy also shared that T-Bone Tom’s will be celebrating its 39th Anniversary with a party and incredible drink and appetizer specials on February 1 including live island-style music by Jimmy Parish. Regulars, locals and newbies are all welcome to put on their dancing shoes and come raise a toast to celebrate 39 years of a True Texas Treasure. JEREMY KILGORE:

Who You Need To Know About • Right Now!

By Rhonda Meredith Growing up in Baytown, area musician Jeremy Kilgore was full of energy and a bit hyper. His focus was more on music, and not the classroom. “I remember drawing a guitar neck with corresponding notes in class. It helped me to figure out how the notes, chords, and tunes all worked together,” Kilgore said. “It was just more natural to me than math or science.” Music to Kilgore is “another language, something I can understand. It’s an emotion, a way of life, and something I am passionate about. I could play every day and never get tired of it.” The full-time musician received his first guitar at age 15. “It was an off-brand electric guitar from a pawn shop,” he said. “I had a knack for it.” His first song to play was a Jimi Hendrix

Mama Tried & Bellhound Friday, Feb. 8 ZONE 504 tune, and it wasn’t before long that Kilgore’s dad got him on stage performing with local blues bands. And soon after, he upgraded to an Ibanez electric guitar. (Full disclosure mandates that Kilgore learned the violin before the guitar because his parents wanted to make sure he could commit to an instrument!) While the electric guitar is his first love and he admits to “having more fun with the various sounds,” Kilgore started playing the acoustic guitar in his early 20s and his acoustic show career began. - Continued on Page 41

LOUD LOVE: Playing The Hits You Love! By Rhonda Meredith Loud Love began in the late 1990s and covers musical hits from the 1960s through the popular songs of today. The band’s name comes from a song written in 1989 by American rock band Soundgarden. “We cover a big variety of music which seems to work well,” said Scott Wright, the founding member of Loud Love. “We play all real music. No click

tracks, etc. We will not compromise that in this band.” Currently, Wright (vocals, acoustic guitar) performs alongside Craig Marshall (guitar, vocals) and filling in as the rhythm section are Leo Guadiana (drums,) and The Lee Dog (bass, vocals). Both Wright and Marshall are former military. Wright worked as a diver for NASA and currently works in wireless electronic data acquisition. Marshall handles software code when not playing guitar. “Craig is an awesome guitar player,” said Wright. “I have been doing this a long time and he has a lot of talent.
