SOUTH SHORE GRILLE:

THE AMERICAN GRILLE WITH A CUBAN FLAIR By Rhonda Meredith South Shore Grille, located at 2800 Marina Bay Drive in League City, is celebrating its first decade of serving their flavorsome American Grille cuisine with a Cuban flair. “Ten years of service to my community, leaves me full of pride,” said owner Mickey Wooten. “I have had such an opportunity to serve so many wonderful neighbors. The challenges have been many; but the rewards are measured by the return of such loyal customers. It is flattering to say the least.” The popular restaurant is decorated throughout with select coastal pieces of art for sale from Pat O'Brien of Kemah's Eagle's Nest Gallery. Coupled with the chic art and coastal decor, the restaurant has a clubby feel complete with thick, dark mahogany booths, rich paneling, and etched decorator glass. The setting enhances your dining experience. The spacious outdoor dining patio is a fun place to sit. Just in time to mark this milestone, South Shore Grille has added items to their already vast and delectable menu. The new menu items destined to become customer favorites are the hearty Lentil and Sausage Soup, flavorful Chili Con Queso Con Carne, Redfish Ponchartrain (light cream sauce of mushrooms, red pepper, shrimp and crabmeat over a chargrilled redfish fillet), a tasty Parmesan Crusted Trout, a lightly seasoned Pasta D’Angelo, delicious Pan Seared Oysters, a classic Greek salad, and the Shrimp and Oyster Po-boys. Tried and true menu choices that are sure to please are the Marina Bay Hot Seafood Dip, Stuffed Jalapeños, Prime Salad Dinner, Chicken Salad Dinner, Seafood Salad Louie, Cuban Fish Tacos, Crab Cake Duvalle, Cuban Chicken Melt, the certified Angus steak signature Prime Rib, Caribbean Grouper, Atlantic Salmon, and grilled Mahi Mahi. Top off your dining experience with an Island Brownie Decadence or the Cuban Bread Pudding.

The experienced and attentive wait staff are ready to assist you in finding the perfect dinner beverage to complement your meal. South Shore Grille serves a wide variety of martinis, as well as mojitos and other fine mixed drinks. Their wine, beer and spirits list is extensive and enticing. "We want everyone who visits South Shore Grille to feel at home, whether in our bar, our main dining area or under the awning in our outdoor patio setting," says Wooten. “Our philosophy is simple: If you don't come into The Grille already a friend, you're bound to leave that way." "The Bay Area is home to me and my family, and has been for many years," says Wooten. Giving back to the community is important to him. South Shore Grille has partnered with Clear Creek I.S.D. to fund two annual educational scholarships of $5,000 for CCISD seniors. To be considered, students must have a minimum “B” average, show leadership, volunteerism, and write a compelling essay on how they will give back to their community after graduation. Contact Kaci Harrison, the Executive Director for the CCISD Education Foundation at 281-284-0031 for details. Wooten also maintains involvement with the R.J.H. Foundation’s “Salute To Heroes” annual event held each June at South Shore Harbour Resort. The foundation is named after Ray Joseph Hutchinson, a graduate of Clear Creek High School, who died in Iraq serving his country. South Shore Grille is open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for lunch and dinner. The venue also offers a private dining room for up to 25 people for a truly exceptional group dining experience. It’s the perfect setting for a family outing or office get-together. NICK'S PIZZA AND GELATO:

Tempting Dishes Made Fresh Every Day By Rhonda Meredith Conveniently located at 210 South Highway 3 (at FM 518) in League City, Nick’s Pizza & Gelato guarantees only delicious food and dependable services because their patrons deserve nothing less. “We have been here for over two years, so we know what it takes to please every customer,” said General Manager Stephen Moshtagh. “You will come in hungry and leave with a smile on your face and a full stomach.” Grilled Panini Tina (thinly sliced Parma Proscuito, fresh water mozzarella, sliced tomato with pesto mayonnaise.)

Enjoy complimentary bread and seasoned oil while perusing their extensive menu. Appetizers abound like Fried Mozzarella, Stuffed Mushroom Caps (huge mushrooms are stuffed with fresh crab meat, spinach, green onion, and Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, then topped with a creamy Alfredo sauce, sprinkled with fresh crab meat and chopped Roma tomatoes), Nick’s Signature Fritto Mixto (fried calamari, shrimp and zucchini with a special sauce,) or Soup di Giorno. The Caesar or Greek salads could be considered a starter or a full dinner just like the Caprese Salad or Insalada Gorgonzola. The pasta dishes and entrees include Spaghetti Carbonara, Fettuccine Alfredo, Linguine in red or white clam sauce, Shrimp al Diablo, Spaghetti a la Nick (spaghetti sautéed in olive oil, garlic mushrooms, sausage and meatballs in a marinara sauce), Veal Piccata or Scalopini, and Penne Arrabiata (penne pasta sauteed in a spicy marinara sauce with grilled chicken) are just a few of the choices. The ricotta calzones are made to perfection, as are the grilled paninis. Popular paninis are the Italian Hero, Grilled Portabella Nella (grilled portabella mushrooms with roasted bell peppers, fresh mozzarella cheese and sundried tomato spread), Grilled Chicken Dominic (grilled chicken breast topped with Asiago cheese and chopped tomatoes on Ciabatta bread), and the

Crowning Nick’s menu are the scrumptious pizzas. The chefs at Nick’s hand toss each of the restaurant’s authentic Brooklyn-style pizzas. Choose a cheese only, Veggi, Super Veggi (cauliflower, onions, broccoli, green and black olives, mushroom, tomatoes, bell pepper, artichoke, and spinach), Quattro Formaggi (ricotta, parmesan, mozzarella, and provolone cheeses), Margarita, Greek, Pesto or Alfredo Chicken, Meat Lovers, or Supreme. Save room for dessert and enjoy delicious scoops of ice cream or gelato, cannoli, or a slice of tiramisu (a luscious cake with layers of ladyfingers, dusted with cocoa powder, drizzled with chocolate sauce and top with a Maraschino cherry), or Italian cheesecake. Gelato is Italy's version of American ice cream, but is a bit richer and creamier. Your cravings will be satisfied. Lunch and dinner are served in a cozy atmosphere by servers who want to make your visit memorable. Call 281-554-6000 for to-go or delivery orders. Delivery hours are Sundays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Your satisfaction is their top priority.

Historic Main Street in La Porte comes alive with art once a month with The ArtWalk By The Bay. The La Porte art exhibit and festival has now been extended to include the first Saturday of each month. The ArtWalk is sponsored and supported by the non-profit Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast. Artists and artisans gather on Main Street around Mainly Drinks and other local businesses in the area to showcase their works of art. Visitors will enjoy the historic and quaint feel of La Porte’s Main Street, as there are several unique shops and restaurants to choose from. As always, admission is free to the public, and there is no charge for artists to display their work. Now that is a win-win for all! ArtWalk By The Bay is held on the first Friday of each month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March ArtWalk By The Bay will be held on March 1 and 2. Tie-Dye Troubadour

SC

Featured Artist: Jason White

By Kelley Dawson Bay Area tie-dye artist, Jason White specializes in traditional and unique, custommade designs. He crafts ancient art patterns that are centuriesold as well as his own creations. White offers his tie-dye artistry on a variety of wearable items and tapestries. “If it’s white cotton, I can dye it,” he stated. White guarantees the tie-dyes are done in the “Dead Family tradition.” White sold tie-dye outside Grateful Dead shows before he started making it himself. “To make more money, I needed to make my own,” he said. Thus, White sought out to learn the art of tie-dye. While visiting Galveston, he met tie-dye artists Joe and Jennifer Luther. According to White, they were the sole artists of their kind selling handmade hemp and tie-dye wears along the beach at that time. White and Joe Luther recognized one another from the Grateful Dead tours. White asked to learn how to make tie-dye. Luther agreed but insisted that White learn the “hard way.” White assisted by carrying water buckets, mixing dyes and wringing out t-shirts and fabrics. He said he learned from the “Kung-Fu-Tie-Dye Master.” Fifteen years later, White is running Texifornia Tye-Dyes. He’s creating his own designs and selling them online along with his girlfriend Mosey Giroux and partner Blake Plsek. White’s designs range from ancient mandalas to modern guitars. White’s works have come a long way from the common tie-dye spiral patterns associated with the 1960s. He decided to get out of the traditional patterns and created his own. “My guitars are very rare designs,” White remarked. “They set me apart from other artists.”

off.” White said the details are more complex than the tie-dyes of the 1960s. White explained the process begins with presoaking the fabric in soda ash and wringing out. Depending on the design, White said he draws a design onto the fabric. Then, he folds the fabric and wraps with string to create the “lines.” White stated he usually folds all day. He joked, “It’s like baking cookies. It’s easier to do 12 at a time.” Next, White mixes the dyes and injects the color with needles “one drop at a time to place the color right where I want it. “It allows for more accuracy over other techniques,” he added. The fabric generally sets overnight and dries in the morning sun. Finally, White opens the designs and rinses them three to four times to prevent bleeding. White admitted he’s sometimes surprised how the patterns turn out.

He added the process is “real work and can take days to pull

He said he studies the angles and aspects of the folds. White noted, “It’s like cutting snowflakes out of paper.” He stated he also learns from each project and has determined what he may see as a mistake is simply something he wasn’t expecting.

Recently, White joined forces with the Morphis Art Collective. He stretches dye pieces for paintings. Fit to Be Scene: Building and Bridging a Solid Foundation me. I love the gym and working out to challenge my body and see how far I can push myself. It’s mostly mental. Mentally, working out is very beneficial for me and is a good outlet for stress. Some people have hobbies; this is my me time.”

By Twila Lindblade Emily Barnes is not your average 21-year-old. She loves fashion and being with friends, like most females her age, but she has a strong driving force behind her. Emily lives in League City with her father and three siblings, ages 13, 12 and 9. She is employed full-time at a Galveston real estate firm and works hard at being active physically and spiritually. Since Emily’s mother passed away from cancer more than two years ago, Emily has stepped in to help care for her younger siblings. “We have always been a close family, but since losing Mom two-and-a-half years ago, we have become even closer-knit. It has been, and can still be a very hard balance – Sister, friend, daughter, fill-in mom, chauffeur, babysitter, working girl and gym junky.” She explained, ”At times, I have the responsibilities of a mother with 3 children, but it is all very rewarding. I love my family very much. I would not choose to be anywhere else in my life right now, and I know it is only for a season.” Emily also has two older sisters who are married and live out of town, one in New Braunfels and the other in Tulsa, Okla. She has a 1-year-old niece who she adores. While balancing it all can be tough, Emily believes having a strong faith and commitment to her health has been crucial. While balancing it all can be tough, Emily believes having a strong faith and commitment to her health has been crucial. “It is very important to me not only to keep a good figure, but also for my health. I know I am young, but it’s never too early to start. I want to live every day feeling the best I can and only put quality fuel in

24

Having strong role models who encourage healthy eating and living has also helped Emily. “I remember even from a very young age, my parents made us take vitamins, drink health drinks and juiced daily. As a child, I was active, but not until I was about 17 or 18 did I make it a choice of mine. But now fitness has become a passion,” she said. Emily maintains workouts or some form of physical activity daily. She enjoys changing up her workout routine so that she does not become bored with it. “I typically lift weights and do some form of cardio 5 to 6 days a week. Right now, two days out of the week, I am training with a coach. He has me doing anything from volume with low repetitions (heavy lifting), to light weight with more reps, to negatives, plyometric-type workouts and anything to get my heart rate up!” She further explained, “I love running outside, and any chance I get, I run at the beach on the sand.” Emily has competed in 10K and 5K races, including the Color Vibe 5K held in Hitchcock last month. However, she has her goals set much higher – to complete a marathon, a half-marathon, a fitness competition and, possibly, a triathlon. “My focus right now is doing a fitness competition. I am not sure when it will be – either this summer or next – but I will compete- more than likely in the bikini division in the NPC (National Bodybuilding Championships),” she said. A strong relationship with God has helped Emily in both her personal and physical goals and is the most important thing in her life. - Continued on Page 26

GET OUT, ENJOY SOME SUN! STAY HYDRATED Howdy Fitness Freaks! With March comes the official beginning of bikini season, let the games begin! Now don't let that statement drive you crazy, here's some food for thought! Getting adequate sunlight helps your body synthesize Vitamin D, which is tied to many processes in your physiology, one very important process being thyroid function. The thyroid is a gland that secretes many hormones, several of which are tied to metabolism. Many people through the winter months, or if you rarely go out in the sunlight develop Vitamin D deficiencies, and eventually Hypothyroidism. This means your thyroid slows down, which slows down your metabolism. With Hypothyroidism, you can become emotional or lethargic, your bones can become brittle, and you can put on fat easily. You'll find you don't have to visit WebMD to learn what will help you, the simplest solution is to get out there in the sun! Just 20 minutes per day can improve your Vitamin D production pro-

foundly. Many doctors recommend taking a Vitamin D supplement to help speed the recovery of the deficiency, but that's something you should speak with your physician about.

higher levels of fluid in it. After approximately 2 weeks, you'll find you don't have to run to the bathroom as often.

After a few weeks, if you are producing Vitamin D properly, you'll notice that you may drop those last few pounds you were dreading the world seeing! A secondary bonus is that even a mild tan makes you look healthier and leaner.

Remember, get in the sun and keep that water bottle handy and you'll be ready to have a great time this bikini season. Get that water in and go sun them buns!

Another point overlooked as the weather warms up is hydration. Get that water in you! An exercising adult needs one ounce per pound of bodyweight to assist with fat loss and keep safely hydrated. By the time you feel thirsty, you are about a quart low on water. When you feel your tongue dry out, almost a half gallon low! When I have my clients increase their water intake, they often complain of practically living in the bathroom afterwards. This is only temporary, since your body has to grow accustomed to getting

Oh, and GET IN THE GYM!!! – Rick Hunter Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. After being an Occupational Therapy practitioner for 10 years, Rick decided to turn his focus into the preventative side of medicine. Since 2001, he has helped transform lives in various settings and worked with various athletes ranging from wanting to look better in clothes to figure/fitness competitors to elite martial artists to powerlifters. He has used NASM (PES and SFS) and IFPA National Certifications, and is studying the Anatomy Trains system to master postural correction. Find Rick at 713-459-3427 or on Facebook.

Emily insists that fitness and healthy living is a journey.

“My dad and mom instilled in my siblings and me, a trust and faith in God that is unwavering – and for that, I will be forever thankful,” she said. “Daily, I am able to wake up and know that with each morning comes new mercies, and His strength is what carries me, and I believe it’s what makes it possible for me to do everything I do.”

“Never despise small beginnings. Never give up. There is no doubt in my mind you will hit road blocks, They'll be hard to overcome, but you are stronger and can overcome them,” she said. “Always push hard. Your body only does what your mind allows. Eat clean and small, lift lots and heavy!”

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence

of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

The Bacliff neighborhood bar was packed to hear this area musical icon. Makes sense as Katie's never charges a cover, has a great service staff, and alVicente Castaneda @ Moreno's ways brings in good shows. Moreno’s has opened a restaurant in Clear Lake with an authentic south of the border menu. We enjoyed musical sets from Vicente Castenada, a Latino guitarist from Oaxaca, Mexico, which was very agreeable. We caught an afternoon of Wood & Wind overlooking the water at the new Pod-Zu’s. The food there is aweWood & some and their Wind @ service staff is Pod Zu's getting their stride nicely. Perhaps they'll be ready for an April Music Festival? Congratulations to Fatty's for pulling off their first charity event for the Owen Daniels Dream Chaser Foundation. Jeremy Kilgore made a brief appearance and Richard Ruiz rolled out an acoustic set (first time for these ears) before Cisco and Joanne sealed the deal cooking up a storm. Book 'em.... Double gold stars to Jackie's Brickhouse for not only providing the *well appreciated* food at the benefit, but for also sponsoring all sorts of

Jeremy cool and clever events in the Kilgore area. And not to forget the @ Fatty's music, we took in a return performance by Tantrum and jammed packed show by The Nailers, a fun dance band we had never seen before. If all this weren't enough, crawfish season is around the corner, and we've got a hunch Jackie's will continue thriving in 2013. Cisco & Joanne @ Fatty's

IT’S A WRAP - February gave us our money's worth. We look forward to saying good-bye to Snow Bird Season and welcoming in Spring Fever. Around the corner, we’ll be dropping in on the Cockeyed Seagull and their annual ’60s Hippie Party on April 6 and before then, may you pick a bracket full of winners, chow on the area’s finest eats, quench your thirst with good spirits and fill your ears with great live music!

TIM HUSTON • Continued from Page 46 During 2011, Huston fulfilled a desire to learn the violin. He bought books to study before he actually bought the instrument. “It took about six months to learn it,” said Huston. “It’s harder than it looks!” He would sleep with his violin and listen to Niccolo Paganini documentaries playing in the background. “It was a huge factor in learning the instrument. I completely immersed myself in the knowledge of the greatest violinist to ever live.” He learned Bach and fiddle pieces, but it was- Tim Huston performing at SCENEfest n’t enough. Huston needed to take it up a notch and sought the discernment of a San Jacinto Community College professor. He needed to know if he was just good, or maybe good enough for a scholarship. He was. Huston received the scholarship, attended San Jacinto’s Central and South campuses, and performed with the college’s orchestra while pursuing a Performance Arts degree.

the next instrument - the eight string guitar because it will offer more range. That means a lot to a musician who writes by notes and not by lyrics. “A possible album and solo project will hopefully evolve from this instrument within the year.” Visit www.facebook.com/illfightyouforit for more information. -----------------------------------------------------

BORN FROM RUINS • Continued from Page 47 A look ahead… The rest of the year is looking great, too. On March 23, BFR will be headlining at Scout Bar in Webster. They are also planning on more regional shows and develop a fan base outside the Houston area. Also, “The Aftermath” is set to be released at the end of the summer. When not performing, the guys lead busy lives as Jenkins is a student at UNT in Denton. Ortiz is a family man and has two little rock stars in the making (Aiden and Jude). VanOrstrand is a “workaholic” six days a week, and Damian is also on that workaholic list with his day job. Plus he performs with two other bands. While it is a challenge to coordinate schedules, BFR has made a commitment to "keep digging." (A reference to local band Saturate’s song.) Born From Ruins is on Facebook, YouTube and ReverbNation. Email bmfo1984@yahoo.com if interested in booking or obtaining a media package. On behalf of the band, Ortiz says, “See you in the crowd!”

For the past five or six months, Huston has taken a hiatus from music and the lifestyle to refresh his perspective and goals. He is now healthier, wealthier, wiser, and more driven than ever before. Just spend a minute talking to him and you can easily see how positive and excited he is about his upcoming projects.

NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - And that would be The Cock & Bull. Last month's report in The SCENE was our clue with their craft brew lineup. That this was the site of a former music hangout (Emily's) that grabbed our intrigue, and an evening show featuring Cerebelus (Rachel Naomi Walker and Armando Vazquez) with freeforming jazz guitarist, Dalton Wheeler, grabbed our muse. Music presentations were crisp and clever reinterpretations of turn-of-thecentury classics livened with a sassy upbeat flair that played well with Cerebelus @ Cock & Bull Chef Brent's sweet chili rib appetizers - an atmosphere suitable for intelligent conversations was a plus. The only irony of the evening was the pint of "Grumpy Monk" ale which was actually very uplifting! Speaking of places for intelligent conversations.... THE PATIO AT SCOUT BAR - Is an interesting gathering place to mingle with physicists, mechanics, medical professionals, artists, Bohemians, and AltIndie/Rock music lovers. Pretty cool, eh? Scout Bar's Open Mic hosted by Saturate runs a crisp turn around of area musicians on the Scout Bar stage where pretty much everybody gets to play and when dialed in right, the unplugged sound is down right awesome. Chatting

with the Otherwise @ Fighting musicians Scout Bar Gemini @ on the Scout patio unBar covers incredible insight on their diverse musical backgrounds ranging from classical, marching band, bluegrass, gospel, orchestra, spare bedroom and garage. Many of the musicians here were born after the rise and fall of 8-track tapes yet there's no doubt the musical influences from prior generations successfully passed along and rooted, making for some *really* good home-spun creations! Needing more of the patio, we stopped by Scout Bar's 94.5FM Buzz Night catching local acts Fighting Gemini and Downfall Rising opening for Otherwise hailing from Las Vegas. With the Buzz Awards out of the way, A.D. Rowntree and Thomas aren't wasting any time pondering next year's winners. TIM HUSTON:

Who You Need To Know About • Right Now!

By Rhonda Meredith Tim Huston makes playing the Euphonium downright cool. The Bay Area resident was a self-professed sports addict growing up in Dickinson until he became introduced to the trumpet in sixth grade. And it opened up a whole new world…

Orgy Wednesday, March 6 SCOUT BAR

“Learning to play music was a lot like sports, it takes a lot of practice to become good,” said Huston. At that point, I wasn’t really into classical music, so I kind of resented it. But I started really listening to classical composers and started to love music.” He learned to play the Euphonium, a baritone brass instrument, when attending junior high and honed his skills as a member of the high school band. “I realized the potential I had when it came to music, so I started paying more attention to what I had going on.” Huston was a part of Revolution Drum and Bugle Corps, a professional marching band during his senior year, and won the 2002 World Championship as well as received recognition for his solo performance. After high school, he auditioned and was ac-

cepted into Drum Corps International. “DCI” is a powerful, nonprofit, global youth activity that provides entertainment to millions through live performances and nationally-televised events. Drum Corps International is Marching Music’s Major League. Trevor Braselton, the current Dickinson High School band director, was Huston’s Brass Caption Head and a big influence and mentor.

Sheila Marshall Band Saturday, March 9 & 31 T-BONE TOM’S

While Huston was achieving success with the Euphonium, he also began a lasting relationship with the guitar. At 15 years old, he picked up a guitar at the encouragement of a girl. She bought him a Metallica CD and book, and since he knew how to read music, it was kind of a natural pursuit. “When I hit my freshman year is when the guitar came into play. Oh, the girls!” Huston formed a rock band while in high school called Stillframe. Who would have thought, that through a twist of fate and a phone call from Scout Bar’s owner Thomas Wilson, would eventually lead to his joining The Hunger, a popular industrial rock band from the Bay Area.

Andy & Dreamsicles Sunday, March 10 LA BRISA BACLIFF

As the lead guitarist in The Hunger, Huston has shared the stage with other successful rock and roll bands like Papa Roach, Filter, Chevelle, and Hinder to name a few. During this time, he was also performing with local bands ERASETHEVIRUS and Another Day. It was a rockstar lifestyle. A merry-go-round of night performances, indulgences, sleeping late, and then repeat… - Continued on Page 44

Like the myth of the Phoenix, BFR was born as each member was raised from the ashes of a former band that was no longer. The members of the aggressive, hard rock group are Blake M.F. Ortiz (vocals), Josh Jenkins (guitar), “Dirty” Dave VanOrstrand (bass), and Ryan Damian (drums). In 2010, they won the Texas Buzz Award for Metal Band of the Year. In August, 2011, BFR released an EP called “Daddy’s Little Whore.” In the same year, they took home the Texas Buzz award for Best Indie/Hardcore Band of the Year. The band steamrolled into 2012 with a performance in the "Will Play For Food" benefit show in May and ended the year adding to their award collection by Ortiz earning the Texas Buzz Vocalist of the Year award and BFR receiving the award for Best Live Performance of the Year. Career highlights include sharing the stage with Texas Hippie Coalition, Soul Fly, Shadows Fall, The Hunger, and most recently HED(pe.) You may have caught one of their shows in the Bay Area at Scout Bar, Union Tavern or Pier 27 Tavern.

“The song 'Save me' was chosen to be our first single from the new album simply because we feel it best shows the energy we are putting into this album,” said Ortiz. “We really love the energy it gives off, and we wanted to use it as a statement basically. The production crew at Digital Services (who produced both the music and video) were amazing and definitely made our part much easier.” The focus of the video is a group of people struggling to survive the end of the world, since the lyrics for “Save Me” are based on the apocalypse or the rapture. “The kids in the video are meant to be set in a dark reality of how times would really be, even though the song has an upbeat feel to it, the underlining meaning is quite the opposite,” said Ortiz. “I really don’t think it could have come out any better.”

And now, Born From Ruins is just getting started… 2013 has been a banner year so far. In February, BFR hosted a “Red Carpet Roll Out,” a semi-private movie-style premiere, at Star Cinema Grill in Webster for the video of their newest single "Save

TEXAS BEER REVOLUTION • from Page 50 supportive of a level playing field for small Texas Brewers. Even the Houston Chronicle editorial board was surprised and dismayed by the development and small breweries would have to wait two more years before a fourth attempt at introducing legislation aimed at giving them just a fraction of the rights breweries in most other states have enjoyed for years. So upsetting was this third failed attempt that a grassroots, non-profit consumer advocacy group called Open The Taps formed to represent the craft beer enthusiasts in Texas with a goal of changing laws and regulations surrounding the craft beer industry in Texas. Fast forward to 2013 and a bipartisan package of bills (Senate Bills 515, 516, 517 and 518) were filed in February to loosen the restrictions on where and how small craft breweries can sell their products. SB 515/HB 1763* expands annual production limit of malt beverages for brewpub license holders and allows a brewpub to self-distribute to certain retailers and certain wholesalers. SB 516/HB 1764* raises annual production cap and permits limited self-distribution for craft ale brewing products. Removes discriminatory in-state/out-of-state manufacturing language. SB 517/HB 1765* raises annual production cap and permits limited self-distribution for craft beer products. Removes discriminatory in-state/ out-of-state manufacturing language. SB 518/HB 1766* allows craft brewers to sell beer and ale for onpremises consumption. *Identical bills are ready to move in both the House and the Senate starting out as companion bills so whichever bills moves quicker through their respective chamber will become the vehicle for the new law.

A specific date for committee hearings has not yet been set, and there is an organized and well-funded opposition working to delay or stop these bills as in years past. But there is no denying the momentum which continues to build. Those wanting to help the cause can The Honorable Larry Taylor reach out, politely and respectfully, to P.O. Box 12068 the Senators on the Business and Com- Capitol Station merce Committee. While everyone can Austin, Texas 78711 reach out, strategic communication Phone: 512-463-0111 from constituents is most effective this www.taylor.senate.state.tx.us early in the process. Luckily, many SCENE readers live in District 11 of Senator Larry Taylor, who is the ViceChair of the Business and Commerce Committee. Give Senator Taylor a call, send a short email, tweet, Facebook post or even snail-mail, to let him know you support Senate Bills 515-518. It's as simple as that! The coalition of advocacy groups supporting these bills in addition to Open the Taps includes the Texas Craft Brewer’s Guild and the Beer Alliance of Texas. And remember, these bills don’t just benefit small Texas brewers, but all Texas beer drinkers as well. There is no reason why beer drinkers in other states should enjoy more rights and options than we do here in Texas just because Texas politics are still dominated by huge corporations and conglomerates that enjoy unlimited money and the political power that comes with it. Right? Cheers!

BEER

The Texas ^ Revolution By John Ennis Will 2013 be the year that the bias against small, Texas-based craft breweries starts to soften? Current Texas beer laws favor International beer conglomerates, including Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, and the politically powerful Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas, leaving the small Texas brewer battling oppressive regulations and enjoying less right and ability to do business within Texas than a brewery from out-of-state. In 2007, 2009 and 2011 legislation introduced in Austin to “even the playing field” failed to overcome the opposition of major beer interests. In 2011, House Bill 602 passed the Texas House and was voted out of committee in the Senate, but it was never brought up for a floor vote after last-minute objec-

tions from Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest beer company, and with help from the policial maneuvering of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. According to Texas Ethics Commission filings, Dewhurst had received $275,000 in campaign contributions prior to 2011 from Texas distributors and others publicly not - Continued on Page 48

The new Texas Breweries displayed below have opened since House Bill 602 died without a vote in Austin (May 2011). It was the third time small Texas brewers failed to overcome the opposition of major beer interests. (The list would double if we included new Texas Brewpubs)

and $4 Hurricanes, too. Dempsey’s Tuesday’s specials are $5.50 per pound crawfish all day, and from 9 p.m. until midnight, enjoy you-call-it mixed drinks for $2 and free juke box.

By Rhonda Meredith An old Irish saying goes something like this, “There are only two kinds of people in the world, the Irish and those who wish they were…” So what do you do if you are not Irish? Well, head over to Dempsey’s Irish Grill of course!

If you don’t have a blarney stone to bring you luck, consider getting lucky with a Wednesday night hump day special. Get some $3-apound crawfish plus $2.50 domestic bottles and $4 bombs all night!

“A good Irish American establishment makes everyone comfortable,” said owner John Delesandri. “There are no strangers at Dempsey’s, only friends you haven't met yet.”

On Thursday nights, it’s ladies’ night and the specials are numerous: $4.50-a-pound crawfish all day, $2 margaritas and house wine, $2.50 Lime-A-Ritas, $5 Dempsey’s Texas tea, $7 rib-eye with fries, and a $4 grilled chicken salad. The T.G.I.F. Friday night specials at Dempsey’s are unique. Grab a bucket with beer! A domestic beer bucket is $36 and a premium or import bucket is $41. The bucket special holds 12 beers. Simply add $10 to keep the Texans bucket. It’s a 5-gallon bucket that is perfect for holding tools!

Located at 20801 Gulf Freeway at NASA Road One in the Bally’s Fitness shopping center, Dempsey’s is the place for crawfish, fresh food, hot specials on cold drinks, and a lot of fun! Make plans to attend Dempsey’s St. Patty’s Day celebration on March 17. Irish bagpipes will be entertaining all day and musical guests include Ezra beginning at noon, 3 Peace at 3 p.m., and Bad Boyfriend from 7 to 11 p.m. A friendly Irish Pot Pie eating contest will start at 4 p.m. with the winner receiving $50 cash. A leprechaun toss from noon to 8 p.m. will be interesting to either compete in or watch. The winner will be announced at 9 p.m. and receive a $300 cash prize. All day long is $4a-pound crawfish, $3 Guinness, $3 Jameson, and complimentary Guinness beef stew. The holiday celebrations at Dempsey’s are epic, but so are the regular weekly specials. Starting the week is Sunday Funday with $2 domestic drafts and $4-a-pound crawfish. Two outdoor acoustic shows with surprise musicians are featured from 3 to 6 p.m. and from 9 to 11 p.m. Skip cooking dinner at home on Mondays. It’s all-you-caneat crawfish for $16.99 or $5.50 per pound from 6 to 9 p.m.

Dempsey’s Irish Grill opens daily at 11 a.m. with Chef Celestino Manning creating new lip smacking menu items. Experience a Dempsey’s Ding Ding (Italian sausage sautéed with peppers, onions and Amaretto; then topped with cheese). Other signature offerings are Dempsey’s Famous Philly and their pickled eggs. Try the new Al's Columbianos (five Colombian pastries with jalapeño, cilantro, pepper jack cheese, onions and served with sour cream and salsa). If you want a taste of Irish goodness, opt for Shepherd’s Pie or Guinness Beef Stew. Of course, you can never go wrong with a mouthwatering hamburger made to order just the way you like it! Since 2010, Dempsey’s has been serving great food and supporting local bands. Live entertainment takes center stage on Friday and Saturday nights. In March, Trip To Cascity and Ezra will be performing. Check www.DempseysPubTX.com for band updates. You can also join Dempsey’s for UFC fights on March 2 and 16.

Friday, March 22 Crawfish Boil-off. $50 per team to enter. First place winner takes 60% of the pot and 100% of the Calcutta prize. People’s Choice and Best Booth split the remaining 40%. Call Delesandri at 713-503-2994 for details.

In our cozy corner of the universe, Bakkhus Taverna was the kickoff site for the Krewes Into Kemah launch party with a PACKED dinner crowd, complimentary shots, and Simone and the Superstars zinging up the air at the gathering. The next morning, we enjoyed a trot around the Lighthouse District with kids of all ages at the Galloway Fun Run. Gotta say the best truth tellers are the faces of the little people 4-foot tall and shorter, and it was clear that this was the start of a great day. This year's Kemah Parade nailed it on the most beautiful day of the month. Parade organizers gathered perhaps the largest armada of floats and participants. A new wave of rich, hand-crafted brews full of flavor, personality & creativity

e would like to thank all those who have enjoyed our first two offerings, the Rocket Ride Brown Ale and Sneaky Blonde Pale Ale, to date. The feedback has been great and the only “problem” we have experienced is our kegs are turning around faster than originally projected.

Support Texas Craft Beer!

We also want to acknowledge and apologize to all those who have requested our beer be available at more locations and in more cities. We are happy to announce that expansion launches this month as Galactic Coast Brewing (GCB) will be adding outposts in at least four new cities and will also soon be launching our Goblin Hunter, a year round salute to Halloween. Soon to follow is our easy drinking session beer (Invisible Plane), an IPA (Ejection Seat), and we are excited about our yet-to-be-named barrel-aged (Jack Daniels barrels) barley wine.

Although the brewery is back in “construction phase” as we are building a new, larger brewhouse and adding capacity, we do plan to host a limited number of tours in 2013 including celebrating our first anniversary party at the brewery and hosting several other events at venues along the Galactic Coast.

As always, follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date on all upcoming GCB events. Cheers!
