NOAH’S ARK BAR & GRILL

Noah’s Ark celebrates 15 years with party, opening of upstairs palapa bar By Rhonda Meredith For the past 15 years, party animals, families, bikers, singles, couples, the young, and the young at heart have flocked to this bay front restaurant. Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill boasts having "the best crew and view on the Galveston Bay!" Everyone is welcome to 4438 Boulevard in Bacliff seven days a week. Head over to celebrate the grand opening of Noah’s Ark’s upstairs palapa bar, The Parrots Nest. The newest addition is for the 21-and-over crowd and features an amazing view of Galveston Bay plus a beautiful hand-painted mural created by a local artist Gary Holman. The upstairs is trimmed with bamboo for an island feel. Patrons will be treated to live entertainment on the weekends. This unique space is comprised of a 14x14 square-foot stage, a 16x12 square-foot real wood dance floor, seating for approximately 80 and a full-service bar. The space is available for weddings, receptions, office parties, reunions or any type of event. “We wanted The Parrots Nest to be used year round, no matter the weather,” said Dawn Radford, assistant general

manager at Noah’s Ark. “Our new rooftop bar is cool in the summer, dry in the rain, and a little warmer in the winter.” Hosting an event at Noah’s Ark is a snap. They have full-service in-house catering and can handle the details. There is no charge for the use of The Parrots Nest or the Lion’s Den party room (seats up to 40 people and is located downstairs within the restaurant) with the purchase of food and beverages. Call 281-339-2895 to reserve the Lion’s Den or an event under the impressive upstairs palapa. Noah’s Ark has also expanded their wine list. “Our new wines include Cavit Moscato, Mark West Pinot Noir, Thorny Rose Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, Red Guitar Sangria, and Estancia Unoaked Chardonnay,” said Radford. “The unoaked wine is the new thing and has a very different taste than regular chardonnay.” Their full-service bar now also serves Blue Moon on draft complete with an orange slice. Two signature drinks to partake in are the Oyster Shooter (oyster with vodka, Bloody Mary mix, Tabasco and is served in a shot glass) and the Coronita Rita (a margarita infused with an upside down 7ounce Corona beer). - Continued on Page 15

Anniversary Party & Parrots Nest Grand Opening!! On Saturday, April 20, Noah’s Ark is marking their 15 year anniversary and celebrating the grand opening of The Parrots Nest, the new upstairs palapa bar, with a big party. “Come join us from noon until closing and enjoy live bands all day, drink specials, and plenty of great food,” said owner Fred Lyttle. “You won't want to miss this party! Noah’s Ark has the best view and best crew on Galveston Bay.”

The “Noah” (a third- or halfpound patty, two pieces of bacon, two pieces of Swiss cheese, sautéed onions, and grilled jalapeños on the side) and the “Hawg” (a one-pound patty with two slices of bacon, Swiss and American cheese) burgers both are customer favorites. The tempting daily specials that rotate throughout the week include BBQ Brisket all day Monday “until it’s gone;” on Tuesdays, it's pork roast dinner, plus, kids 8 years and younger eat free from the kid’s menu; All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti or chili spaghetti for $6.95 and kids 8 years old and under eat free spaghetti on Wednesdays; Beef Pot Roast all day “until it’s gone” on Thursdays; and shrimp dinners are $12.95 all day on Friday. When not at Noah’s Ark, the Lyttles lend their support to non-profit organizations throughout the year including the Houston SPCA Animal Adoption Center. If you are looking for somewhere casual and friendly, then look no further. The bay breeze will wash your cares away. The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series

C J (Carl Johnson)

Chef

Tookie’s: 1202 Bayport Blvd. (Hwy. 146) in Seabrook Background: Carl Johnston, better known as “Chef CJ” to customers, is a self-taught chef and did not go to culinary school. He was 12 years old when he decided to become a chef. His aunt was the inspiration to start cooking. Experience: The chef (who probably has the biggest smile this side of the Kemah Bridge) started cooking at a country club at the tender age of 15 years old with a great chef mentor. He went on to learn from more great chefs as he gained experience. What is it about cooking that you love? Chef CJ says it’s the thrill of the business and making people happy with the food I prepare. Signature dish: Lobster Bisque Have you cooked for anyone famous? Why yes! Yes, he has… When Chef CJ was 18 years old, he prepared a turkey sandwich “with butter and no mayo” for Ozzy Osborne at a hotel in Austin. He cooked for President Clinton when he was with Landry’s. Plus he participated in the Food Network Best of Show at the Rice Hotel while with Sambuca restaurant.

Please share a special cooking tip or technique to share with our readers. Chef CJ says to use fresh ingredients, don’t over salt, and cook with love. The Bean Burger and the house chili... “The bean burger is our Texas favorite,” said Chef CJ. “And our house-made beer chili is NEW. Come check them out!”

NEW RESTAURANT REPORT:

LAS HACIENDAS IN SOUTH SHORE HARBOR By Rhonda Meredith Established in 2002, Las Haciendas Mexican Bar and Grill has been serving authentic Mexican cuisine in the Bay Area for 11 years. In February, the family-owned restaurant opened their fourth location at 2951 Marina Bay Drive (in League City) at South Shore Boulevard. Enjoy lunch or dinner indoors or outdoors in a festive and casual environment.

Summer Salad (three kinds of lettuce, spinach, tostada chips, mango, onion, tomato, nuts, grilled shrimp and fresh cheese), the succulent Cancun Platter (grilled chicken breast and four grilled shrimp shish kabobs served on a sizzling grill with steamed broccoli, tortillas and charro beans), the sweet Mango Tilapia (grilled shrimp shish kabob, with rice and steamed broccoli), or the Special Dinner (grilled chicken breast, grilled tilapia, spinach and broccoli, topped with seafood sauce and rice).

Choose from one of the 30 lunch specials to satisfy your cravings Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Try the fajita combo for one, Pescado Empanizado (fried catfish with fries and two shrimp,) Pechuga Cilantro (grilled chicken breast served with rice and beans, and fresh jalapeños), or the Filete A La Mexicana (grilled fish topped with Mexican sauce and rice with a salad).

Of course, for the traditional tastes, Las Haciendas offers enchiladas, tacos al carbon, flautas and fish tacos. A local favorite is the Nachos Haciendas that are topped with grilled chicken or beef fajita, beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and jalapeños.

The great food and friendly service continue into dinner time too. Order a new item from Las Haciendas’ mouthwatering menu like the satisfying South Shore Harbor Salad (three kinds of lettuce, cucumber, olives, tomato, spinach, fresh cheese, and your choice of beef, chicken or shrimp), the light

Save room for flan, sopapillas, tres leches cake, or fried ice cream. Complete your meal with a tempting dessert or an after-dinner drink like the Mexican Coffee. This bold drink is made with tequila and Kahlua® coffee liqueur; then mixed with a fresh cup of coffee and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Las Haciendas has over 50 different margaritas to choose from. The house margarita is a timeless favorite that draws fans from all over the area. This frosty concoction can be requested frozen or on the rocks and with or without salt. It also comes in a variety of flavors: traditional lime, raspberry, banana, mango, piña colada, sangria, strawberry, guava, and peach. Las Haciendas is great for groups, too. Catering is available as well as a party room. Stop by and tell them you read about them in The SCENE. Visit www.lashaciendasgrill.com to view an online menu.

Murals and Much More

SC

Featured Artist: Gary Holman

If you go out to eat in the Bay Area, chances are pretty good you’ve laid eyes on a Gary Holman mural. A Native Houstonian and current resident of San Leon, Holman has been painting and sculpting for forty-five years. His largest body of work consists of commissioned portraits including a live portrait of Goldie Hawn. Not surprising, as Holman learned from world-renowned portrait artist, Harry Worthman.

But, Holman’s most recognizable works adorn the walls and facades of famous Texas honky tonks and many local restaurants (such as Topwater Grill, Noah’s Ark, Dickinson BBQ, Don Julio’s, The Cock-Eyed Seagull and T-Bone Tom’s). Holman said he became an artist when he realized he “wasn’t good at some things and very good at something else.”

had lied about a picture of Santa Claus he drew for class. After grade school, Holman studied art history in college. Then, he continued art work while in the Army where he was able to travel Europe. There he sought out museums and masterpieces. Even in Holman’s murals, he carries on the brush techniques of the masters he studied in Europe. He uses very little air brush and spray.

He started drawing well known cartoon characters and characitures of his classmates. The drawings were well beyond the typical sketching talents of a seven-year-old. Holman remembered once being sent to the principal’s office because his teacher thought he

“I’m an old school muralist,” said Holman. Some of his favorite murals depict underwater scenes. Whether a sea critter, mermaid or sunken pirate ship, Holman captures the subject along with just-the-right light and tangible water ripples in such an authentic manner you might start holding your breath. His sculptures are quite breath-taking too. He carved the giant crab atop the 18th Street Pier sign in San Leon and a grimacing twelve-foot grizzly bear for Baylor University. Holman stated he’s been a realist most of his artistic life. He believes to be a good artist, “others must see what you see.” Holman’s realistic approach and curb appeal have allowed him to travel and paint around the country. Plus, he prides himself in “doing right by his clients” and therefore maintains relationships with them for years. Holman said that he is painting almost every other day. “I maybe have two pairs of clothes without paint. It just jumps on me,” he joked. Holman’s studio is located in San Leon. He also bases himself out of Gulf Coast Palapas where he is commissioned for murals, tiki bars and other such tropical décor. Holman said, “with or without money in the bank, I’ll continue painting. I’ve always done this for the love of it.” To view more of Gary Holman’s portraits, murals and current projects visit www.garyholman.net.

Friendswood Fine Arts (FFAI) presents the 4th Annual Art in the Park - Outdoor Art & Music Festival on May 18 and 19 in Stevenson Park located in historic Friendswood. Art in the Park is the largest event of its kind in the area, bringing thousands out each year and features incredible art, demonstrations, fantastic music, entertainment, and free art activities. There is something for everyone at the festival where artistic talent and appreciative patrons merge for one glorious weekend. “This event really brings out the best that our area has to offer. Art in the Park inspires such a great outpouring of support and participation from the community, it is truly a unique event.” said Co-Founder and Director Sara Peters. This years’ festival will include an “Art Through The Ages” exhibit that will showcase local artists from Kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as live art demonstrations throughout the weekend. “We want to encourage everyone to experience the arts during this event and witness the great work that artists are doing around us, every day. It just makes sense to start with the art teachers, who help to nurture and guide the artists of tomorrow,” says Peters. Art in the Park is coordinated by FFAI Directors Sangie Gardiner and Sara Peters along with a great team of dedicated volunteers. Friendswood Fine Arts is a 501c3 Nonprofit Organization who helps to support and encourage the arts through free community events presented throughout the year.

Friendswood Fine Arts presents the 4th Annual

All activities at Art in the Park are free to the public thanks to sponsorships by local businesses including Motor Trend, Denbury Resources, Allied Petrochemical, and the City of Friendswood. Musical performances will include flamenco guitarists Guillermo Serpas and Andrew Bateman on Saturday, and a soulful show finale with the soulful sounds of the Modulation Band on Sunday afternoon. “The event begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m. on Saturday, and we’re back for a second day this year, from 11 until 4 p.m. the following Sunday. There was just too much to include it all in just one day, we needed a whole weekend!” said Director Sangie Gardiner. In addition to event programming, each year Friendswood Fine Arts selects a local non-profit organization or group to also benefit from event proceeds. The 2013 Art in the Park benefactor will be the Friendswood Education Foundation, an organization supporting local education through programs ranging from student and teacher relationships to advancement of campus technology. In addition, Friendswood Fine Arts is sponsoring an art supply drive to benefit the Resource Crisis Center of Galveston County. Visitors are encouraged to bring new art supplies to the park that weekend for a chance to win some great prizes. Each item donated is an entry into the drawing. All donated items will go to help support the Art Therapy Program sponsored by the Resource Crisis Center. A list of needed supplies is available on the official event website. Information for Artists and Musicians who would like to join the event, as well as general event information can be found by visiting www.AitpFESTIVAL.com, or by emailing Info@FFAIonline.com. Keep up with all of the excitement on Facebook.com/FriendswoodArtFestival.

FIT TO BE SCENE:

Triathlete & Marathoner Chris Ploss League City resident and Army Reserves Captain Chris Ploss takes time out of to share some tidbits about his passion and motivation behind the competitive sports he participates in, triathlons and marathons. What's your favorite thing about triathlons? I like triathlons because it's three separate disciplines that you have to focus on. I was always a decent runner, but bike and, especially the swim, I really had to work at to be able to compete. How do you stay fit? Exercising with people! It's all about accountability and liking what you do. There is no one "end all be all" workout, (despite what cross fit will tell you. Ha ha!) There is always a tradeoff for different aspects of fitness. It just depends on what you like doing, what your goals are, how you want your body to look, etc. What moved you to go in this direction, athletically? I was doing like a cross fit/bootcamp workout class which I loved, but then a friend asked me if I wanted to do a triathlon. I have always heard about them and said sure. As I got more into the training I really loved the sport. How long has this been a way of life for you? Ever since I was a freshman in the Aggie Band and Corps of Cadets in college, I have been serious about working out.

that adds extra motivation. What is one of your more memorable moments as an athlete? Recently, I was competing in an 800m time trial for the swim. I had a great gain that I never thought I would hit. Also crossing the finish line for my first marathon in Houston! That was a great feeling. What are your next aspirations or goals for yourself? I would like to do a full ironman distance at some point. How do you overcome the challenges balancing life/work & fitness? I'm single, and have no kids (ha ha!), but that is about to change! It's great that my fiancĂŠ likes to workout with me, which helps. It's really just about making time. If you have 30 minutes to an hour to watch TV or scroll through Facebook, just make the decision to move your body instead. Can you share any eating tips? For weight loss, what you put in your mouth is everything, like 75% of it. If you want to lose weight, it really comes down to just a few things: 1. Have a caloric deficit (consume less calories than you burn); 2. Stay away from sugar (except fruit); 3. Drink nothing but water. ~Betsey Ennis

What is your day job? I work for my father at Chemical Process and Production in Santa Fe. I'm also a captain in the Army Reserves. What keeps you motivated? I have seen too many friends and family become overweight and lead unhealthy lifestyles. It's very easy to do if you don't stay on it. Also, I have our Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) twice a year. They tell me I have to be in shape, so

The GRITTY GODDESS

returns… Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run at Moody Gardens May 4

On Saturday, May 4, 2013, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women, and women only, who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5k (3.1 mile) course through Moody Gardens includes 25+ themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam, and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course”, says Event Director Claire Jordan, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area, and even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course for some pampering. For the May event there will be lots of new surprises, including a monkey bartype obstacle, and even more mud.

wave of the Gritty Goddess at 1:30pm allows girls aged 8-13 to participate with their mothers, older sisters, or female guardians as part of the Goddess + Nymph Challenge. Saturday afternoon at 3pm there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1k obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, aged 6-13. For more information and to register, go to grittygoddess.com or www.grittykids.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run”.

The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive so participants can complete the course at their own pace, and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family, or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will go off every 10 minutes starting at 8:30am, and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae, and complimentary beer or wine. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon, and the “GLOW GODDESS” after-party on Saturday evening, with DJ Hexum and glow necklaces for everyone. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun”, says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” when you mention The SCENE.Valid April 2013 only.

Weekends on the Water

A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence

of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

HEALD BANK RACE scheduled for April 21-22 Lakewood Yacht Club Race Committee Chairman Gerhard Wittich has announced that this year’s Heald Bank Regatta has been scheduled for the weekend of April 20 – 21. This is the first race of a series to determine the winner of the Texas Offshore Racing Circuit (TORC). The second event is an offshore regatta hosted by Houston Yacht Club while the final event is the Galveston Bay Cruising Association’s Texas Race Week. At the conclusion of Race Week, the prestigious Texas Navy Cup will be awarded to the TORC spinnaker champion using PHRF with spinnaker handicapping. This year, 2013, marks the 50th anniversary of the TORC which was founded in 1963. In celebration of this, there is an effort underway to establish a new perpetual trophy for the TORC non-spinnaker championship using PHRF handicapping and counting all three events. The Heald Bank Regatta, which is open to the public, is held offshore in the Gulf of Mexico starting at the Galveston jetties, marker 11. The race begins on Saturday afternoon and finishes early on Sunday morning. In addition to the PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes, boats may enter in cruising fleets or in a multihull fleet. Cruising class boats will receive a handicap assigned by the race committee and are not required to provide a PHRF certificate. Multihull boats will need to have a handicap certificate issued by the Texas Offshore Multihull Association (TOMA). All spinnaker boats will sail a triangle course of approximately 90 nautical miles while the non-spinnaker boats will sail a two leg course of approximately 60 nautical miles. “This should be one of the most fun nights of racing that one can experience offshore south of Galveston,” related Wittich. “It is also a good warm up for the longer distance races held later on in the Gulf such as our popular Harvest Moon Regatta coming up October 17 - 19 of this year,” he added.

BAY AREA IDOL: Continued from Page 47 It was something she loved to do, but did not go public with her talent or even sing karaoke until about two years ago. “Singing is my soapbox,” said the personable Arias. “You can tell life what you think about what is has given you. Like happy songs bring back happy memories. And heartbreak songs…” Her voice trails off. Arias tries to connect her life with her songs. “Every song should be a story and relate to you. Singing to me is my lifeline and it relieves stress.” Arias’ blues based band The Midnight Eyes is three months strong and performing “their version of every song” around Houston. She listens to a wide range of music, depending on her mood, from Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley, Elton John, and to The Eagles. “I am dig-

ging underground new rappers,” Arias said. “It’s opposite of what I do, but they are bringing the storytelling back, like Tyler The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. ‘Folky’ singer songwriters like Citizen Cope are really inspiring.” The self-professed “film buff” says her other interests include watching movies, reading good books like the Great Gatsby, and hanging out with people “who make me better and feel happy.” Arias currently hosts karaoke at F Bar Houston and attends school for a medical assisting certification. She will be graduating school soon and looking toward pursuing an education to be a registered nurse. Arias is being considered for a new singing show on NBC called “The Winner Is…” and is waiting on a callback from the network. To other aspiring singers (she considers herself one too,) Arias offers this advice, “Sing for what you love in life, what inspires you, and what you love from the bottom of your heart. Fame may come, but it’s a hurdle. Stay humble above everything else. Do it because you have something to give.” “Tons of encouragement from friends and family” helps Arias to keep focused. Her parents, friends, and coworkers have been supportive and very positive. “I am very happy in life.” Arias wants to thank Erin Webb and YourTownTV.com, the judges at Bay Area Idol, and everyone who has urged her at some point to continue her dreams and said “you have something special to give.”

Josie Arias wins BAY AREA IDOL By Rhonda Meredith Twenty-one year old Josie Arias was voted the winner of the first annual Bay Area Houston Idol, a YourTownTV.com, LLC Production. The finals took place at The Hut at La Brisa Mexican Restaurant in League City last month. The event was formed to find the most talented singers the Bay Area has to offer and help them kick start their career in the music industry. Arias was chosen over ninety contestants and won a $1,000 cash prize, a publicity campaign with YourTownTv.com, a record label consult, and more. “It felt amazing to win,” said Arias. “There were so many phenomenal singers and I feel blessed to have been a part of such a talented group of singers.”

The Houston native says she received a link about Bay Area Idol and the rest (they say) is history. This was Arias’ third competition and her song choices were picked by the following thoughts, “Can this be real? Can I give you real? Can I sing this so someone can feel it by the time I am done and get offstage?” One such song that brought the crowd to its feet was Arias’ powerful rendition of Adele’s song “One and Only.” “Everyone was in awe and her voice was very powerful and full of emotion,” said SCENE representative Maricarmen Bates. “I remember turning to the people next to me and them mouthing ‘Wow!’” As a child, Arias’ dad fostered a “deep love of music” in her as she listened to old blues, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. Arias has been singing since she was little. - Continued on Page 39

SILVER EAGLE’S 2013 TRADE SHOW Houston-based Silver Eagle Distributors is the nation’s largest distributor of Anheuser-Busch products. While much of the Silver Eagle empire was built getting Budweiser products to market from Houston to San Antonio, they know craft beer is the top-performing beer segment and have developed an impressive craft beer portfolio as a result. The list of craft beers carried by Silver Eagle is a long one with well-known national craft brewers such as Sierra Nevada (California), Widmer Brothers (Oregon), Red Hook (Washington), Pyramid (Washington), Flying Dog (Maryland), Kona (Hawaii) and Rogue (Oregon). And equally as impressive is the stable of Texas craft brewers Silver Eagle has been able to sign up, including Saint Arnold (Houston), Rahr & Sons (Fort Worth), Karbach Brewing (Houston) and one of the state’s newest breweries, Fort Bend Brewing (Missouri City). All outstanding to solid breweries. Three American craft breweries in the Silver Eagle line-up that you may not have heard of, but should are, Lazy Magnolia (Mississippi), Southern Tier Brewing (New York) and possibly my new favorite, Sixpoint Brewing (New York). I’ve been aware of Lazy Magnolia for a while and have enjoyed a couple Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ales, which claims to be the first beer in the world made with roasted pecans, locally. The Deep South Pale Ale and Jefferson Stout, a Sweet Potato Cream Stout, made a very positive impression. Southern Tier Brewing, which it was explained to me gets its name from being located in the southern half of New York south of Interstate 90, just arrived in Houston the day before the trade show and is Silver Eagle’s newest brand to carry. The Imperial Iniquity Black Ale was impressive and one of five beers that should be available by the time this issue hits the streets. But my favorite of the entire show was Sixpoint Brewery, also from New York state. Only available in Texas since late last year, I really respect the bold creativity of Sixpoint. The core Sixpoint Beers are named “Sweet Action,” “Righteous Ale,” “Bengali Tiger,” “The Crisp,” “Brownstone” and “Resin.” Sure, creative names for beers are nothing new. But what I first noticed is nowhere on their cans is there any reference to any kind of style or type of beer, like IPA, Pale Ale, Blonde, Stout, Bock, etc. While many breweries claim to put their own twist on beer styles that have been around for hundreds of years, Sixpoint may be the first I’ve come across with beers so unique and extreme that they don’t even mess with styles at all. Something this beer enthusiast and brewer finds really refreshing and appreciates even more because the beer is really good. Best bet on landing some Sixpoint locally is the new and highly-regarded Nobi Public House on NASA Parkway in Webster. Cheers! - John Ennis

TEXAS BEER: Continued From Page 51 In simple terms, SB 639 limits flexibility brewers have in pricing their beer, outlaws a manufacturer (brewer) from accepting payment from a wholesaler (distributor) for territorial distribution rights although the code does not prohibit a wholesaler from selling territorial rights of a manufacturer to another wholesaler. Needless to say, this bill is a step backwards for many current and all future craft breweries who have not come to an agreement with a distributor. SB 515 is a “game-changer” for brewpubs and increases annual production limit of brewpubs from 5,000 barrels to 10,000 barrels and, more importantly, allows all brewpubs to sell to wholesalers and self-distribute up to 1,000 barrels per year from a single brewpub and up to 2,500 barrels per year from all brewpubs. This means for the first time, a Texas brewpub will be allowed to sell its beer outside the brewpub. Something common all over the country, but not in Texas – until now!

The last two bills to pass the Senate unanimously are SB 516 & 517 which creates a new Brewer Distributor permit, but really limits – almost in half – the maximum amount of beer a production brewer can self-distribute to 40,000 barrels per year.

A potential “game-changer” for production breweries is SB 518 which allows production breweries who have less than 225,000

THE SCENE

barrels of annual production to sell up to 5,000 barrels per year to consumers for on-site consumption. That means breweries can sell beer to their guests, but only for on-site consumption. So I’m guessing the entertainment schedule at most Texas breweries is about to be enhanced as the difference between a brewpub and production brewery has become hazy as a brewpub’s beer can now be sold off-site and a production brewery can now sell its beer on-site. Major development even with the negative impact SB 639 will have on smaller production breweries.

Now the bills will be substituted for their companion House versions in the House Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee for a vote before being sent to the full House for a vote on the floor. Once they pass these next two steps, the bills will be sent to the Governor. Fingers crossed there are no surprises like in 2011.

The Texas ^ Revolution Two Steps Forward & One Step Back For Texas Craft Brewers By John Ennis After legislation in 2007, 2009 and 2011 failed, it does look like 2013 will be the year independent, Texas-based breweries will claim victory in Austin and not get completely steamrolled by the state’s powerful beer distributors and International beer conglomerates. Optimism comes from a deal struck between the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, beer distributors, large brewers and the Open The Taps non-profit organization which resulted in multiple new Senate Bills. So far, two ground-breaking bills for Texas Brew Pubs (SB 515, 518) have passed the Senate unanimously (both 31-0) and are moving forward to the House. Also having

passed the Senate as of press time is the controversial SB 639, nicknamed the “Craft Brewery Poison Pill.”

The new Texas Breweries displayed below have opened since House Bill 602 died without a vote in Austin (May 2011). It was the third time small Texas brewers failed to overcome the opposition of major beer interests. (The list would double if we included new Texas Brewpubs)

8TH WONDER BREWERY officially opened (got final TABC approval) last month and is the newest addition to our list of Texas Breweries to launch since the last effort to relax some of the strickest, business-unfriendly laws for brewers in the country. As the name suggests, this brewery is from Houston. And we are predicting a brighter future for the brewery than its namesake, the Astrodome. Cheers!

Did March and the Madness pass by with a BANG or did it? Hope everybody's bracket and Spring Break was fun. Just to be sure ourselves, we ventured out and met up with many of you out and about on the SCENE including some new stops that were interesting and enlightening. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! We enjoy being with you. Now, let's run down some of what all went down... ST. PATRICK'S DAY - Well, you did it; we did it, too, but then, why not? Our adventures on perhaps the nicest Sunday of the month included a trolley full of merry mongers, a fresh keg of Galactic Coast Beer, a green light to go for the gusto, and stops at the Hilton, Dempsey's (three thumbs up on their leprechaun toss), Pier 27, Jackie's Brickhouse, Cabo and Sherlock's. Holy moly! Were things cooking or what? Whipping up

NO DOUBT - Fatty's has been bringing us a good assortment of live music and this month, we checked out the Starr Jernigan Band. We were impressed with this band the first time we caught them Mark Haddock at T-Bone Tom's at the Seagull a couple months ago. We did a follow up in March and are positive that this is one of the best local rock and blues band happening. Got it? Starr cooks up effortlessly endless smooth and articulate lead licks for which I'm pretty positive are original each and every time. - Continued on Page 45
