SPACE CENTER HOUSTON to launch “Name the Shuttle” contest
SCENE UPDATE:
Beginning July 4, Texans will have the opportunity to name the ultimate Shuttle attraction WHAT: Space Center Houston, the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC), will launch a free, statewide contest that gives one lucky Texan the opportunity to name the high-fidelity Shuttle replica that will sit atop the massive 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) as part of a new $12 million, six-story attraction currently under development. Residents can visit www.nametheshuttle.com and submit an original name that symbolizes the spirit of Texas and its unique characteristics of independence, optimism and can-do attitude. WHEN: The contest opened to Texas residents on Thursday, July 4 and continues until Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at noon. The winner will be announced in “mid-September.” OVERVIEW: The state-of-the-art Space Shuttle attraction is slated to open in 2015 and will provide a one-of-a-kind visitor experience exclusive to Space Center Houston. It will be the only place in the world where guests can climb aboard the huge 747 SCA and the Shuttle replica and experience the 30-year Space Shuttle program in the most dynamic, hands-on environment imaginable. The attraction will also expand Space Center Houston’s current educational programs, which aim to inspire students to consider careers in math and science.
One By Air + One By Sea = Best Shuttle Attraction As any of my Facebook friends can testify, I was more than a little “upset” when the home of the Space Shuttle program got passed over in NASA’s distribution of the remaining orbiters. And don’t even get me started on New York City’s “bait-and-switch” maneuver to land the Enterprise. But I embraced our high-fidelity Shuttle replica from the start knowing it would offer visitors a much more interactive experience than simply admiring the shape and scale of a real shuttle from a distance. Add the fact that our “shuttle” was transported here by water, and the fit for our waterfront community seems that much more appropriate. Last September, I admired NASA’s extensively modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) doing a series of low-level fly-bys over the Clear Lake area while ferrying the Endeavour to its final home in California. Little did I know then, that the 747 would eventually be returning from California and making its permanent home here at Space Center Houston as part of what will become the ulti- John Ennis, Publisher mate shuttle attraction and destination.

BAY AREA VETERANS MEMORIAL DEDICATED IN SEABROOK It was three years in the making: Full of designing, fundraising and construction, but the passion project of local residents Jenny and Bruce Arunyon was dedicated during a beautiful ceremony in late May. Located along the Back Bay at 1106 2nd Street in Seabrook, the Bay Area Veterans Memorial honors all branches of service. The Fallen Soldier Bronze Monument was unveiled the day of the dedication. Next time you find yourself in Seabrook, take a minute to see the memorial and think about those it honors.

THE HERB CAFÉ AND MARKET:
YOU WILL TASTE THE DIFFERENCE By Rhonda Meredith A little over a year ago, Adam Folden was eating lunch at local restaurant. But this wasn’t a day like any other day. Folden was contemplating a job offer that just didn’t feel right to him when the restaurant’s owner mentioned in conversation they were getting out of the business. Folden was intrigued. “I wasn’t sure which direction my life was headed,” he said. “But things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out.” Three weeks from that fateful conversation, The Herb Café and Market located at 5828 FM 517 East in Dickinson opened. “It was like Restaurant Impossible.” Folden’s nearly decade-long experience in the restaurant and wine industries prepared him for shaping his vision. He, along with business partner Walter Wilson and Chef AJ Robicheaux, began a journey of creating an eatery that wasn’t exclusive, but rather, inclusive to all in the community. “We have a little bit for everyone,” said Folden. “It’s all good. And The Herb Café is not bound by any one type of cuisine.” Take one look at the menu, and that sentiment is confirmed. Start off with fresh guacamole made with a touch of Habanero pepper, or Asian lettuce wraps with chicken and their secret homemade peanut sauce, or maybe the Grilled Shrimp La Baccia served with tomatoes, avocados, and a
balsamic drizzle. Of course, there is the chicken and sausage gumbo made from Chef Robicheaux's secret family recipe or a bowl of creamy tomato soup made with fresh basil and topped with sour cream, and the fresh spinach salad tossed in a warm bacon vinaigrette is also an option. House favorites include King Ranch chicken, grilled pork chops, Salisbury steak, shrimp etoufeé, and grilled chicken breast topped with a pineapple relish and served with garlic ginger fried rice and stir fry vegetables. Sandwiches are carefully crafted in a myriad of ways. The “B.L.A.T.” is a delicious layering of crisp Applewood bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado between two thick slices
of Texas toast. Explore the thrill of the Cuban sandwich, Philly cheese steak, the Banh-Mi (Vietnamese char-grilled pork {or chicken} topped with shredded carrots, cucumber, fresh cilantro and sliced jalapeño served on toasted La Baccia bread), or the Italian sub (sliced capicola, Genoa salami, and prosciutto topped with provolone cheese, fresh basil and oregano, sliced tomatoes, red onion and lettuce served on a toasted French baguette). The Herb Café takes their customers’ dietary needs into consideration and can create a paleo or gluten-free entrée. - Continued on Next Page
FIRST ANNIVERSARY PARTY! It’s The Herb Café and Market’s one-year anniversary on Saturday, July 6, and they want to show their appreciation! “Without the support of the Dickinson-area community, we would not have made it this far,” said Folden. “Please come celebrate this momentous achievement with us!” Partake in this family-friendly celebration with drink and food specials, local artisans, kids activities, and live music all day from Roger Wayne Bailey (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), DJ Ben, and Thread Belly (4 to 8 p.m.)

THE HERB CAFE: Cont. From Page 17 Also, many menu items are vegetarian friendly. Opt for a veggie quesadilla, margherita pizza, penne pasta, a (yes, vegetarian) Reuben sandwich, or even a spicy zucchini frita made from fresh eggs baked with thinly sliced zucchini, jalapeño, red onion and corn. Whichever you choose, you are surely going to taste a difference. “Our food just tastes better. Items like salad dressing, chicken broth, and roux are all homemade,” said Folden. “All of our dishes are from scratch using the freshest ingredients available, many of which are derived from our very own on-site garden.” The Herb Café grows garden fresh herbs like garlic, basil, rosemary and mint to name a few. THE HERB CAFE EVENTS: In addition to the rotating daily lunch specials, The Herb Café and Market offers a Friday Night Steak Night that features a Prime Rib with rosemary-garlic mashed potatoes and a sautéed squash medley. Your steak can be enjoyed with a domestic or imported beer or choose a glass of wine from around the world. Owner Adam Folden is a Level 1 Sommelier and can
Folden says he and his staff are environmentally conscious. “We make an effort to not throw out much and will compost, recycle, refurbish and re-purpose to accomplish this.” And they like to have fun and get to know the community who surrounds and supports the café. But, The Herb Café takes its customers’ dining experience seriously. “Leave the negativity at the front door and relax,” said Folden. “Come enjoy the same quality food and service level expected at a more expensive restaurant.” And while you are there, browse the market section and appreciate the local wines, honey, art and other cool items for sale. The Herb Café and Market is open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 281-337-4080 to place a pick-up or delivery order or even an optional reservation. An On-Going Series Chef Scott Sexton Scotty’s Pub 10943 Scarsdale Blvd. Houston, TX 77089 MAKING MUSIC IN THE KITCHEN: Chef Scott Sexton had earned a music degree prior to attending culinary school in 2008. But the Level 2 Sommelier decided to pursue the additional degree after a management position he had held ended. He figured it would bolster his resume and he had the time. Sexton’s father joined him in the educational pursuit at Houston Community College. When asked about the combination of the music and culinary arts degrees, Sexton, in his typical laidback demeanor, said, “All it takes is a wooden spoon and a wine glass to literally make beautiful music in the kitchen.” THE LOST ART OF CHARCUTERIE… Interning with Fredric Perrier at Houston’s Aura Restaurant was a great experience for Sexton. He became fond of French food and charcuterie. “It’s a lost art really,” he said. Charcuterie is the branch of cooking devoted to the smoking and curing of meat, such as sausage, pork, and pâtés to name a few. Sexton enjoys being creative in this process and is introducing a Shiner Bock beer, maple and jalapeño flavored bacon. Yes, BACON! IN THE KITCHEN AT SCOTTY’S PUB:
up an original sandwich called “3 Little Pigs.” It has pulled pork, but also includes house made Tasso ham, bacon, gruyere and American cheeses, caramelized onions and a pineapple maple mustard on a ciabatta bun. Both dishes are pictured along with the tasty house fries and the fun Disco fries that are tossed in garlic, Parmesan cheese, and truffle oil then topped with awesome sauce and a fried egg.
Speaking of bacon, Scotty’s Pub began serving food two months ago. “We are not re-inventing the wheel,” said Sexton. “But we do like to deconstruct classic menu items and make them better.” For example, he will take a childhood favorite like a grilled cheese sandwich and create a “Grown Up Grilled Cheese.” This version has bacon, American, Gruyere and brie cheeses, apple slices and apricot preserves served on buttery Texas toast.
Buy a good knife and learn how to use it. Prep time could be daunting and take a long time unless you know what you are doing.
Or rather than just a pulled pork sandwich, Sexton whips

Dame’s determination along with months of speech and physical therapy allowed him to learn to talk and walk again. Upon returning home, Dame’s fatherin-law took him to a boot shop in Dallas. There they both noticed an ornately carved totem pole. “I bet you can’t do that,” challenged the father-in-law. “He shouldn’t have told me that,” replied Dame. Those six little words stuck with him. Dame knew he had overcome insurmountable odds and therefore believed he could carve a totem. Though still partially paralyzed on his right side, Dame managed to train his right arm to pound a hammer. He joked, “I had many a bruised knuckle.” Dame soon attempted

his first carving working with a chisel, a screw driver and a hammer. “It looked just like a totem pole, and I went from there,” he said. According to Dame, carving wood proved to be art therapy while he continued to heal. He explained that the work helped to develop his motor skills. “It felt great and is my release,” said Dame. He then returned to school to obtain a commercial art degree. Dame excelled in the program as a sculptor. In fact, his UT Tyler art professor told him he was “wasting his time here.” His professor encouraged him to move on and “make a way in the art field.” Never one to falter, Dame said he “kept pounding, kept carving and kept on selling by myself.” He added, “I’ve always been passionate and persistent,” he added. Not four months after moving to the Bay Area, Dame attained a full-time wood sculpting job with a local palapa company. There, he creates tikis and other such tropical décor from whimsical fish and mermaids to highly ornate pieces. Dame said he loves carving for a living and seeing satisfied buyers. He said, “I’ll just keep pounding away.” For commissions or more information, contact Derek Dame 281-508-4332.

Farpoint Theatre, formerly Theatre of Seabrook, has been playing nice since 1997, and this will be a banner summer with so much community support. “Cinderella will have lots of animals and fairies and a little of ‘bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!’” There will be two adult roles already cast. Cinderella’s mean step-mother will be played by Jada August and the endearing Fairy Godmother will be played by Linda Stahl, both local actresses. Adult volunteers are always welcome to Seabrook’s place to play. Farpoint Theatre is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization and all proceeds are considered donations. There is no paid staff at Farpoint Theatre. This wonderful place to play will offer summer memories to treasure. UNTANGLED HAIR STUDIO CELEBRATES OPENING

ent lengths, curls, and diameters of the lash extension depending on the look you are trying to achieve.”
By Rhonda Meredith Untangled Hair Studio, a full-service salon located at 2900 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, is celebrating the opening of their premiere Lash Bar.
The turnover of natural lashes is anywhere from two to three months. There are three stages of the natural lashes, this is why they constantly are being shed and re-growing. During the refill service, only the grown out or unruly lash extensions will be removed and replaced with new lash extensions.
Since opening in 2007, clients have looked to Untangled’s stylists to make their hair look its best. And in 2010, the salon began offering lash extensions. Now in 2013, Untangled Hair Studio is proud to unveil the Lash Bar for its clients.
“Lash extensions are perfect for weddings, special occasions, and other social events,” said Manuel. “Whether you want fun and flirty lashes to complement a new outfit or something more subtle and elegant to enhance your features, Untangled’s Lash Bar will leave you looking and feeling like a new, beautiful, reinvigorated you.”
“In addition to our full line of salon services for men and women, you can also treat yourself to gorgeous eyelash extensions and leave feeling brand-new,” said Untangled’s Hair Salon and Lash Bar’s owner Jen Manuel.
Lash extensions will not destroy the original lashes as long as you follow the professional aftercare guidelines. The aftercare includes using a specially formulated eyelash extension mascara and make-up removal pads which can be purchased separately at Untangled. Manuel also warns against using a clamp style eyelash curler.
The Lash Bar offers a variety of luxurious lashes to complement and enhance any look. Lashes are important. They are considered the accent that completes any and all makeup looks, drawing more attention to the eyes, like a picture frame. Whether you choose faux or natural materials, eyelash extensions will add length and volume to your natural strands for longer, more luxurious eyelashes.
Untangled's Lash Bar is beautifully decorated in designer coral and black colors. Come relax, get pampered, and leave bright-eyed and fabulous. “With our expertise,” said Manuel. “We can transform your look to WOW!”
The lash extensions are individual extensions on each eye lash; so, one single lash extension is attached to every individual lash of the client. “The procedure takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the amount of natural lashes the client has,” said Manuel. “There are differ-

Free Weights, Machines & Bands Happy Hot-uary, my Meaties! This month I'm going to talk about free weights versus machines, and how they can help you attain different things in your workout. The first thing to remember about working out with weights is that every time you lift something, you are overcoming gravity’s effects on that object. Gravity only works up and down, therefore your movements while lifting free weights should reflect that point. I'm sure you’ve seen people in the gym defying this rule. Meet Undefeated Fighter
ANDREW MARTINEZ Age: 31 Weight Class:185 Record:3-0 Hometown: Galveston, Texas How did you get into MMA? What is your athletic background? I played baseball and football growing up, and I have always been a fan of MMA. As an adult, I started exercising again, and I told my wife I wanted to do more. So one day, my wife looked up local gyms and found Jason Carter’s gym (Furia Training Center). I started in 2010 and have been hooked ever since. Talk about your family and how they motivate you to succeed. My family has been a big part of my fight career. My wife and daughter are my number one fans. They put up with my moodiness when I’m training for a fight and cutting weight, and they rearrange their schedules to suit my training. Being a fighter’s wife or child is a big sacrifice. I don’t know if winning will justify their sacrifices, but I feel I owe them that. This motivates me to succeed, and be the best I can be. I consider the people of Galveston my extended family, and their support drives me as well. What are your aspirations or goals? I have a fight coming up August 2 in Galveston for the SCC Middle Weight Title. After I win that, I plan to continue winning and eventually go Pro.
Next Fight:
Superior Combative Championships 4 (SCC) August 2 @ Galveston Convention Center (TITLE FIGHT!)
Meet Undefeated Fighter
TRENT PARKER Age: 21 Weight Class: 170 Record: 4-0 Hometown: Dickinson, Texas How did you get into MMA? What moved you into this sport? I wrestled in high school and was captain of the team. I got into MMA after high school because I didn't want to go out-of-state to wrestle, and I needed to compete in something. That’s when my coach (local, retired MMA fighter) Chris Reed introduced me to Jason Carter of Furia Training Center. What are your aspirations and goals for yourself? First, I’m focusing on winning my fight for Legacy on August 31, and then getting the title. One day, I want to fight in the UFC. I am also completing my last semester of nursing school this fall. Talk about your training for fights. Between fights, I do Olympic lifting with Team Houston to help me build power and size. At this point in my camp, I start circuit training and sprints to lean down and build my cardio. I am always working technique, drilling, and sparring with Team Furia. I train every day and constantly evolve as a fighter.

The Gritty Goddess: from Page 25 The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive so participants can complete the course at their own pace, and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family, or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will go off every 10 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae, and complimentary beer or wine. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon, and the “GLOW GODDESS” after-party on Saturday
Free Weights, Machines:
from Page 25
Machines offer convenience in positioning, and if they are selectorized, easy to load weight, just move a pin. A primary consideration to take when using a machine is the adjustment for it to fit you. Most machines allow a range in height from 5’2” to 6’0”. If you are shorter or taller, you will have to either compromise safety to use the machine or just not be able to fit it at all. Another consideration is stabilization. Machines do all the stabilizing for you, so you don’t have to work the smaller accessory muscles in each motion to help prevent injury during functional motion. Free weights are wonderful for that, however! And now to throw in another option: bands. These tools are

evening, with DJ Hexum and glow necklaces for everyone. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun,” says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” Although the minimum age to participate is 14 years old, the last wave of the Gritty Goddess at 1:30pm allows girls aged 813 to participate in the full 5K with their mothers, older sisters, or female guardians as part of the Goddess + Nymph Challenge. Saturday afternoon at 3pm there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1k obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, aged 6-13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com or www.grittykids.com. You can also find info on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.”
wonderful since they are so easily portable and can provide a wide array of challenges! The farther you stretch a band, the more challenge it presents, which translates to more effort you must exert to move it. That means you don’t need a bunch of different bands, just a few and plenty of stretching space to challenge big and small muscles groups alike. Most band companies color code their bands based on Thera-Bands' system, which is lightest to heaviest: pink, yellow, green, red, teal (aquamarine, whatever!), blue, grey, and black. Keeping in mind what you are hoping to accomplish with your workouts, you can decide if a machine is right for you or not, as opposed to free weights or bands, but most importantly, GET IN THE GYM!

BEER
The Texas ^ Revolution GAME-CHANGING laws for brewpubs and craft production breweries now in effect It was understandable that even after a package of Texas brewery bills (SB 515-518 & 639) received a majority of votes in both chambers, that some brewers and beer enthusiasts remained grounded and assumed nothing. In 2011 everyone, including the Houston Chronicle Editorial Board expected a package of bills to pass into law before what Texas brewmaster called a “last second, evil empire curveball” killed them. But not even the mighty Anheuser-Busch InBev could prevent the bills from passing and being signed into law by Texas Governor Rick Perry this time around. Although not perfect and more of a compromise with distributors than is being reported in the mainstream media, the passing of these bills does signal the first time small craft brewers had any kind of success in Austin. Thanks to the Texas Craft Brewers Guild and consumer
groups such as Open The Taps, Texas brewers now enjoy many of the same rights that have enabled brewers in other states to grow and boost local economies, even creating new jobs. While craft production breweries gained the ability to sell limited amounts of their beer for onpremise consumption, it’s the brewpubs that enjoyed the biggest step forward raising production limits and gaining the ability to sell beer to wholesale distributors for off-site distribution. As a result two Texas breweries -- Jester King and Hops & Grain -- have announced they will switch to brewpubs as a result of the new laws. The Texas Craft Brewers Guild estimates that the overhaul of the state’s brewing laws could lead to the creation of more than 55,000 jobs and $5.6 billion in commerce. And that isn’t just good for Texas breweries or craft beer enthusiasts, but it’s good for all Texans. Cheers! - John Ennis
The new Texas Breweries displayed here have opened since House Bill 602 died without a vote in Austin (May 2011). It was the third time small Texas brewers failed to overcome the opposition of major beer interests. (The list would double if we included new Texas Brewpubs)

The sweet flavor of a banana liqueur is mixed with the intense burst of coffee and hazelnut flavors of Kahlúa and cold milk. Kahlúa is the number one selling rum and coffee liqueur in the world and is made with 100% Arabica coffee. The Drunken Monkey would be a perfect afterdinner drink.
this adult beverage is to take two favorites and combine. It’s made with the alcohol typically found in a 20ounce frozen ‘Rita, then topped with a Grand Marnier float. Add in an ice cold 7-ounce Corona beer (the whole bottle) to top it off, it is pure genius. You can have the best of both worlds. But why stop there? Pair this cool concoction with Noah’s Ark’s “Buffalo Oysters,” grilled with butter, hot wing sauce and blue cheese dressing.

The whiskey barrels that adorn the outside décor are from Michigan. As Demetri was collecting these items, he was also formulating Skallywag’s concept. The ideas had been rolling around in his head for awhile until John and their parents were able to pull them out and bring Skallywag to reality. It’s a true family venture with John’s construction company All Coast Construction taking the lead on the build out. Everyone who was hired to work on this is a Bay Area local. “This was really important to us,” Demetri added. To further demonstrate the Kouloumoundras’ family involvement, the bar’s name ‘skallywag’ was a term used by Demetri and John’s great-grandfather. And while the term may have a few definitions, in this instance, it means a “craft beer ice house with a come-as-

Skallywag is upping the game at their full bar, too, and using pickled veggies in their drink creations. Take the “Slap Ya’ Mama” Bloody Marys for instance. This drink is almost too beautiful to consume. Happy hour specials are from noon to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Those specials include $4 Fireballs, $2.50 Bud Light, Miller, and Coors Light longnecks, and $4.50 “what's in the well” drinks. Well drinks are made with premium liquors. Those 21+ can enjoy their adult beverages amid good conversation and against the backdrop of a commercialfree jukebox. In August, it may get a little rowdy at Skallywag when the NFL ticket starts, and the Houston Texans football games will be shown on their nine TVs. Currently, Skallywag offers daily “food truck-esque” styled food. Like $5 in-house smoked pulled pork sandwiches topped with ginger cilantro slaw – until they run out. More kitchen items will be added at a later date when Chef Joe Rackley joins the team. They will then offer a revolving menu of made-from-scratch exotic game burgers, smoked meat sandwiches and more – think Southern fusion pub grub. Skallywag Suds N’ Grub is open from noon to 2 a.m. every day. Be sure to “like” them on Facebook to stay up-to-date.

TEXAS JOHNNY BROWN: Cont. From Page 60
Steps From The Blues.” That song is the title tune of Bland’s biggest selling album ever. Some years ago Texas Monthly magazine named Bobby "Blue" Bland’s “Two Steps From The Blues” as the best album ever recorded in Texas, any genre. That album is available today. Brown included his own great recording of “Two Steps From The Blues” on his Nothin’ But The Truth CD.
Brown has also taken his music abroad, touring and playing festivals in Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, France and other European countries. Brown has been the recipient of numerous blues music awards and honors. September 22, 2001, the City of Houston honored him with Texas Johnny Brown Day; he has won five Houston Press Awards for Best Blues, Best Vocalist and Best Guitarist; and the Blues Artist Of The Year at the Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton Blues Festival.
Of his songwriting, Brown had this to say, “One of the things I always wanted to do was write songs because it’s life. You see so many things that happen that never get talked about, people never really mention, you know. I write about things in life that I have seen, things that really have happened in life. You hear so many songs about things that really aren’t ... visual. I like to write about things you can visualize. I do a lot of my own songwriting. I enjoy that. I’m working on some songs now for a new CD but the going is slow due to my wife's longterm illness."
Brown has recorded two four-star CDs, 1998’s Nothin’ But The Truth and 2002’s Blues Defender. The former was the Real Blues Magazine’s Blues Award Winner in the categories of “Best Texas Blues CD” for 1998 and “Best Independently Released Blues CD.” That album also received a W. C. Handy Awards nomination for Comeback Album Of The Year.
Often called the Dean of Houston’s rich, traditional blues community, Brown plays a full schedule in Greater Houston venues when not touring. His schedule can be found at online at txjohnnybrown.com. Catch him while you can. Brown's music is so well done that it has appeal no matter the genre of popular music one prefers.
Brown is a featured artist in “Down in Houston, Bayou City Blues” a book by Dr. Roger Wood with photographs by James Fraher. Brown was chosen as a principal performing artist for that book’s release and signing party. Brown has also been profiled in numerous American and overseas blues magazines. In 1946, Brown came to Houston and joined Amos Milburn’s national touring band. While in New York City with Milburn in 1949, Brown recorded three of his original songs for the thenfledgling Atlantic Records. Brown’s classic cuts helped found the label. Those recordings and one other by Brown are available today on the 4-star CD, Atlantic Blues: Guitar. Brown rerecorded one of those excellent songs, “There Goes The Blues,” and included it on his Nothin’ But The Truth CD. In the ’50s and ’60s, Brown was the touring bandleader for blues legends Bobby “Blue” Bland and Little Junior Parker. When those artists decided to tour separately, Brown went with Parker. Altogether, he spent 11 years touring with them. Those artists recorded on Don Robey’s Duke/Peacock label, headquartered in Houston. Brown also worked as a session guitarist at Duke/Peacock, and later, as A&R Director. At that time, Duke/Peacock was the largest and most successful Black label in America. (Robey sold Duke/Peacock to ABC-Dunhill in May of 1973.) During that time, Brown wrote the classic blues ballad, “Two

We’ve been following this monthly event, hosted by Jerry Diaz on the third Wednesday of the month and delighted to report, it's growing popularity. An abundance of musical and artistic talent filled the air with creativity and mingling with so many of the like in a single location, sets this event above others. In June, we finally got our chance to catch the full lineup of an awesome group, SoulPride, who describes themselves as “a six piece, powerhouse party band celebrating Texas Funk, Soul, Rock and Blues. High Energy, Exceptional crowd interaction." We describe them as one blistering unit of cohesive chemistry that can hit you from so many angles (a good thing) and a group we’re pretty positive, mostly sure, and willing to bet money that my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt would rave over. Skallywag Suds N’ Grub:
Friends, It’s Time To Get Thirsty By Rhonda Meredith Skallywag Suds N’ Grub, located literally right inside the Kemah Lighthouse District at 600 6th Street, is a new bar with the top craft beer selection in Galveston County. With 43 beer taps to start with, and another 20 to 30 brands in bottles, Skallywag will highlight local craft breweries and host some micro brews, too. What is craft beer? Craft beer is made by small brewers. The hallmark of craft beer and craft brewers is innovation. Craft brewers interpret historic styles with unique twists and develop new styles that have no precedent. Craft beer is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley and sometimes non-traditional ingredients are often added for distinctiveness. They are unique. A few of the Texas craft beer brands on tap are Galactic Coast Brewing (Galveston County's only craft brewery), Real Ale from Blanco, Lone Pint from Magnolia, No Label from Katy, and both St. Arnold's and Karbach from Houston. But this is “just a taste” of what you’ll find. Red and white wine are also represented on tap as well with both flavors coming out of the tap and into your glass crisp and chilled. Owners Demetri Kouloumoundras and his brother John Kouloumoundras have taken great care in creating Skallywag. The design of the bar maintains an intimacy and atmosphere that is unlike anything in the area. “We will not be pretentious in any way...” Demetri said. This is evident in the details. “I like collecting old things. It’s collecting memories. Every piece of wood used in creating the bar has some kind of meaning or story.” It’s interesting to hear the Kouloumoundras brothers talk about the pieces that were brought together to create this vision. - Continued on Page 48

RIP TEXAS JOHNNY BROWN WE LOST AN AMERICAN TREASURE & BLUES LEGEND Just before this issue went to press, we learned of the passing of an American treasure, true blues legend and SCENE favorite. John Riley Brown. Better known as Texas Johnny Brown, he was diagnosed with liver and lung cancer earlier this year and passed away on July 1 at the age of 85 in his Houston home. He performed right up to the point that he was too sick to play. Although his career spanned more than six decades, took him around the world and included some of the earliest recordings of Atlantic Records in the late 1940s, Texas Johnny Brown was no stranger to our local “SCENE.” I first caught his act at Crawdaddy’s more than 10 years ago and last saw him perform late last year at League City’s Boogie, Blues & Brews festival. I was lucky enough to see him perform many, many times in between, always amazed -- if not entranced -- with the power and grace of his performances and the endurance and energy
which he had no problem bringing to the stage at an advanced age. He was a freak of nature that looked 20 years younger than he should have with more energy than many 40 years his junior. His legacy is extensive as the 2008 SCENE article below from the late and great Jim Shortt explains.

But I’ll never forget the afternoon my wife and I spent with him and Grady Gaines years ago at a SCENE cover photoshoot and how warm, friendly and patient he was, though, I’m confident we weren’t the most efficient or skilled photographers he had worked with.

The Great Texas Johnny Brown By Jim Shortt (Published 2008, The SCENE Magazine)
National treasure “Texas” Johnny Brown is a seminal American blues artist. Brown is noted as a top-flight singer, songwriter and guitarist. He’s a fixture on the Houston, national and international blues music scene. Brown’s full-time music career is divided into two distinct phases. The latter phase began in 1991, when he retired from the corporate world after 20 years. Since then,
he has played numerous festivals and venues across America. Major credits included the Chicago Blues Festival (twice), the Long Beach Blues Festival, Pocono’s Blues Festival, major Harlem venues, W.C. Handy Blues Awards Show, Carnival Blues Cruise of the Caribbean and the Houston International Festival (numerous times). - Continued on Page 49

une was a big month for Galactic Coast Brewing. Sherlock’s Tapping We celebrated our first outpost within Houston city limits with a keg tapping party at Sherlock's Baker Street Pub in Clear Lake where we had a chance to meet a lot of GCB Facebook followers and Texas craft beer enthusiasts alike who hadn't yet tried our beer. We also added a third Kemah outpost with the much-anticipated opening of Skallywag Suds N' Grub, which features the best beer selection in all of Galveston County and provided a great venue for our first LED-enhanced tap handle. Possibly more exciting is the national exposure GCB received by participating in the King Of The Grill reality TV show which aired June 26 on the Discovery Channel. Skallywag Suds N' Grub generously hosted our viewing party. In July, we celebrate our first anniversary and will be appearing on the Houston-based Drink of Ages radio show on NEWS 92 FM, stay tuned for details. On Saturday, July 13 GCB will be competing as a featured brewery at the Houston Summer Brew Off held at Hughes Hanger (2811 Washington Ave.) and benefitting Homes For Our Troops.
