BAKKHUS TAVERNA Celebrates 5 years serving Greek food with a Texas twist
restaurant, they endured on a shoestring budget and became beloved on 6th Street at the heart of Kemah.
By Rhonda Meredith Bakkhus Taverna Greek Restaurant and Bar’s upbeat atmosphere and casual dining experience makes it a popular venue among locals and visitors. Located at 605 6th Street in the heart of the Lighthouse district and just seconds away from the world-renowned Kemah Boardwalk, Bakkhus offers a diverse menu that can be described as Greek food with a Texas twist. When opening Bakkhus five-years ago, owner Demetrios Kouloumoundras had 20 items on the menu and specialized in traditional Greek cuisine. He had a “sky is the limit” mentality, but in those early days, it would make him happy just to make enough to pay the light bill. Then a little over a month after opening, Hurricane Ike hit the Kemah area. Most businesses tell a story with the timeline of “pre-Ike” and “post-Ike” happenings. In this case, Kouloumoundras had just opened Bakkhus, so this story will start with after Ike blew through… Bakkhus was without power and the staff cooked what they had for those able to get there to eat. It was personal to the locals that Ike would not defeat their spirit and during this time, the community pulled together. Bakkhus was the first restaurant to re-open, and even though it was touch and go for the new

Whether it’s traditional fare you want or a taste of Greece with a southern, home-style touch, we’ve got you covered." “We take pride in our menu selections,” said Kouloumoundras. “We use the freshest ingredients available and make what we can from scratch.” Over the years, Bakkhus’ menu has grown from 20 items to more than 80 items. Kouloumoundras, along with Bakkhus Chef Zach Buster, have worked together to create new dishes and tweak existing ones. General Manager Lance Cumpian says Chef Buster “comes up with the most amazing tasting soup flavors” and hints that the “proposed new menu items are pretty exciting.” Of course, not all menu items come from a kitchen think-tank. Cumpian says the “Big Bogutzki” and the “Cyclops” burger were both inspired by regulars. And that’s another pretty awesome part about Bakkhus. It’s not a part of a big chain restaurant. It’s not a job to Kouloumoundras and his staff. - Cont. on Page 16

Floyd’s on the Water State-of-the-Art Wine Room is Keeping Summertime Cool! By Rhonda Meredith It’s August and the temperature is a cool 58 degrees. No, it’s not a mirage in the Texas summer heat. This wave of cool relief can be found inside the wine room within Floyd's on the Water at Harborwalk, an upscale casual restaurant, located at 1301 Harborwalk Blvd. in Hitchcock. “With a temperature of 58 degrees, the white wines are not too cold and the red wines are just right,” said Lance Botkin, a partner at Floyd’s on the Water. Floyd’s serves regional Gulf Coast seafood with Cajun influences in an intimate, relaxed setting complete with panoramic views. Complement the experience with a perfectly paired wine. “The general rule is to pair white wines with white sauces, white meat, and light fish,” Botkin said. “Red wine pairs well with red sauces, red meat, and darker colored fish. Also, lighter bodied wines tend to fare well with lighter bodied foods. Another component to consider is that a savory dish may break the rules.” Suffice it to say, Floyd’s servers are well trained and ready to assist in making the perfect selection of entrée and wine pairings. Consider these examples: Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is an Italian wine and would complement the Jumbo Grilled Scallops Rockefeller, a new signature dish at Floyd’s. The innovative white wine is pale straw yellow in color. Its clean aroma and dry flavor has a pleasant
golden apple aftertaste and offers great character and versatility alongside the fresh scallops that have been grilled to perfection and topped with a creamy Rockefeller sauce. The intense flavor of J Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley vineyards will make a lasting impression when paired with either the 16-ounce Cowboy Cut Bone-In Rib Eye or the 8ounce filet mignon. The crisp flavor of the steak is balanced well with the rich black fruit, raspberry, and intriguing vanilla note of the J Pinot Noir wine. A single New Zealand vineyard provides the Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc’s distinctive fine chalky texture and great citrus elegance. It marries well with Floyd’s wild caught Crispy Skin Gulf Red Snapper or the fresh Gulf of Mexico Grilled Swordfish. The combinations are endless. Floyd’s custom wine room is built with Brazilian mahogany wood and the wines are organized by varietal. Order by the glass or share a bottle. This year, Sunday, August 4 is that day. The items listed above just scratch the surface of Bakkhus’ vast menu. The restaurant offers gourmet burgers, gyros, salads, delectable desserts like a Baklava cheesecake, Galaktoboureko, a Greek custard baked in filo crust, drizzled in honey and dusted in sugar. The kid’s menu is very friendly to the younger crowd with chicken, spaghetti, peanut butter and jelly, and more. There is something for everyone at Bakkhus. Bakkhus’ staff is skilled in the kitchen and behind the bar. On the “Revelry” drink menu, there are some very unique drinks to experience and savor. The Bakkhus Rita and the spicy El Pepino are made with Milagro Silver tequila; the Pimms Cup combines Hendricks gin and Pimms British liqueur; the Bakkhus Blurricane features Sailor Jerry Rum, and the drink options keep going all the way through a long list of intriguing martinis. The happy hour specials are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and include $4 premium wells, $4 wine by the glass and $4 drafts (13 taps). The restaurant also appreciates the brewers of local craft beer and offers several brands of craft beer for its discerning customers. “I enjoy trying new beers that are brewed well,” said Kouloumoundras. “There is a distinctive quality to craft beer’s artisan style. An On-Going Series Chef Joe Rackley Skallywag Suds N’ Grub 600 6th Street, Kemah Homegrown minor league umpire says “SAFE!” in becoming a chef! Chef Joe
Rackley was born and raised in the Clear Lake area. He began cooking at a young age while in the kitchen with his mother. Prior to embarking on his cooking career, Rackley was an umpire in the minor leagues. Traveling around the country began to lose its zest, so he returned to his hometown. Rackley turned to something he has always enjoyed and the 30-something chef began his career in the restaurant industry at Bakkhus Taverna in Kemah four years ago. A visionary in Skallywag’s kitchen:
Skallywag offers daily “food truckesque” styled food like in-house smoked pulled pork sandwiches, buffalo burgers with bacon marmalade, wings, and several different Cole slaws are in menu rotation. “Think Southern fusion pub food,” said Rackley. Coming up in the kitchen will be made-from-scratch wild boar sausage on a pretzel hoagie. “We use Slow Dough Bakery for our bread and choose to use local farms and ranches.” Recipes “outside of the box” are Rackley’s specialty. Skallywag will be offering homemade ice cream for beer floats. Rather than use a simple vanilla flavor, the creative chef came up with an original burnt sugar and espresso flavor to complement Skallywag’s unique beer line-up. A saucemaster… Rackley is a saucier. “It’s the French
word for sauce master,” he said. (You have to really pay attention to figure out if Rackley is joking or not.) Semantics aside, he IS able to create some amazing sauces from a béarnaise to a not-so-basic barbeque sauce. THE SCENE

and pepper is really all you need… And always taste before serving.” Famous clientele: During the basketball All-Star week-
end this year, he served hamburgers to Doctor J, Adrian Petersen, and Clyde Drexler. Former Houston Rocket and Hall of Famer Drexler told Chef Rackley that his culinary creation was the “best burger he has ever had!” Up close and personal: At home, Chef Rackley likes to
grill and eat healthy, but is known to make a mean cheesecake. He tells us he is engaged to his beautiful fiancée Mercedes and has an equally beautiful four month-old baby girl named Addison Jewel.

15th Gulf Coast Film Festival to bring Hollywood to Clear Lake Actor Robert Patrick to receive Lifetime Achievement Award
This non-profit annual fall event attracts independent films from around the globe and is judged by a panel of outside judges, consisting of seasoned producers, directors and cinematographers. The winners have their films screened before audiences and receive their prestigious title and award at the Saturday night gala. This year, the award-winning actor, Robert Patrick is scheduled to attend the three-day event as the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Mr. Patrick has an extensive acting resume and is best known for his role in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which elevated him into cult status as the liquid metal base T-1000 Terminator. With over 120 films under his belt, some of his noted works include Fire in the Sky, Last Action Hero, Walk the Line, Avatar, The Marine, X Files, The Sopranos, The Unit, Burn Notice, Gangster Squad, Safe House, and most recently the TV series The Last Resort and the funny movie Identity Theft. Hal Wixon, founding director of the festival said, “Numerous awards are given each year in both film and screenplay entries in various genres. Selection is competitive and awards given are on merit, whether an experienced or first time film maker and many films have gone on to the Sundance Film Festival and other larger film festivals. Come out and see these wonderful films and meet our celebrities. You will have a great time!”
The screenings of the film finalists will be held all day Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15 at the Star Cinema Grille (located at NASA Parkway and I-45 in Webster). The actors, directors and crew of each film will also be at the screening location for autographs and networking. The films run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and tickets can be purchased online and at the door. The opening day, the “very lucky” Friday the 13th will consist of an afternoon Filmmakers’ Workshop. Anyone interested in making films is urged to attend this public event. The workshop is from 1 to 5 p.m. and will include topics about filming, camera and lighting and more. A panel consisting of noted directors and producers will be on hand to share valuable information that will include tips and some interesting stories also. The school district’s film teachers and students will be on hand, too, adding to the educational component. - Continued on Page 24

Featured Artist: Barb Fernandez

A
fter 25 years as a highly successful stylist and color specialist in the hair industry, Barb Fernandez now designs masterpieces of a different sort. Her current specialties are mosaics made of stained glass and eggshells. Fernandez said she is also known for her “impulsive sketches and original paintings in acrylic.” Fernandez initially became interested in learning how to create stained glass while in her late 20s when she was reunited with her birth mother, a stained glass artist. Fernandez believes her “keen eye of balance and understanding of color” stemming from her years as a stylist greatly prepared her for her current works of art. She retired “from behind the chair” in November 2012 in order to pursue a full-time career as an artist. Her painting "Iraq Sun" was highlighted on the Fall 2011 cover of Chrysalis, a student art publication at San Jacinto College. “I’m inspired mostly through music, different mediums and the love of color,” stated Fernandez. She said begins a project by drawing out the desired design. Then, she stated, she “cuts each in-

dividual piece of glass from sheets of glass, glues them onto a base one piece at a time, and grouts it all.” In 2012, Fernandez discovered a chapter titled "Eggshell Mosaic" while reading a book on different mosaic techniques at her mother’s home. “I decided I would try it until I got my own technique, and that's what I did,” she said. Fernandez explained she starts with raw eggs cracked in half and cleaned. The eggshells are painted with acrylic. Then, much like the glass mosaic technique, she paints a design, applies the pre-painted eggshells with glue and seals with a protective lacquer. She joked, “Yes, we like omelets and breakfast tacos at our house, and I have fabulous friends who also save their eggshells for the cause.” Many of her beach-themed works seem almost lyrical as if they captured the Jimmy Buffett tune that Fernandez was no doubt listening to as she created the lively seascapes and sunsets. Her pieces are vibrant and intriguing. They evoke a genuine smile and therefore a change in attitude (or maybe latitude). Though much of her design inspiration comes from “parrot head” music, Fernandez creates a variety of images and themes. “I appreciate the challenge of custom orders and will always strive to exceed any expectations,” she said. Barb Fernandez creations are currently on display in Seabrook at the Seabrook Waffle Company and the 2nd Street Gallery. Her works can also be viewed the first Friday evening of each month at Art Walk by the Bay in historical downtown La Porte. Her art will again be featured during the month of October at Mainly Drinks in La Porte. The opening night, September 13 is at Villa Capri, 3713 NASA Parkway in Seabrook with the traditional Meet & Greet Reception Buffet from 6 p.m. -10 a.m. This is a come and go event that offers meeting all the film entries with their cast and crew, fans of the festival, and celebrities, including the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Robert Patrick. This is always a night of eating great food, music, mingling and plenty of photo ops, not only with media present and the official photographers, but it is always acceptable to bring your own camera for those special photos of new and old friends. 2013 Texas Outlaw Challenge

Its official! The Texas Outlaw Challenge is now a nationally-recognized, must-attend poker run attracting boating enthusiasts from all over the country. The number of poker run registrations this year rose from 125 to more than 160 boats and the pre- and post-event coverage in national boating magazines also set a new high. Hats off to organizer Paul Robinson and his team of volunteers who have continued to add to the event each year with more events and attractions. New this year was the Texas Steel Horse Stampede and Texas Horsepower Car Show which when packaged with three different bikini contests gave those staying on land plenty to do. A highlight from this year’s event included former Houston Texas Defensive End Mario Williams taking delivery of his Marine Technology Inc. (MTI) 446 catamaran, “Big Bad Wolf” (pictured below), from Seabrook’s Bullock Marine. Possibly more impressive was the performance of the 32’ Skater “Gone Again” (pictured at left) which won the GPS Extreme Shootout with a run of 171mph. Mario Williams’ Big Bad Wolf

What moved you to go in this direction, athletically? One day, I found a DVD and decided to buy it. I popped it into my TV, and WHAM! I was hooked. I found local classes and started my journey. Once I realized that this one style of dance could work my entire body and challenge my mind, I knew I was in it for life! Becoming an instructor has allowed me to share this art, and also helps me to learn old things in new ways. What keeps you motivated? The fitness benefits! Bellydance is a great way to tone the entire body especially the core. Every move is designed to strengthen that natural inner corset that is your core. It tones the butt and thighs, improves posture, and even tones the arms. What is your day job? I paint murals during the day! What is your favorite thing about this bellydancing? From the shimmy to the costumes, it is all about creativity! Bellydance challenges you to think on your toes when you are dancing improv/choreography and helps me find new ways to teach so that everyone understands. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family, or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will go off every 10 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae, and complimentary beer or wine. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon, and the “GLOW GODDESS” after-party on Saturday

You’ve worked hard to defeat the dreaded love handles, and sitting on the couch while you heal isn’t conducive to keeping that battle won, so take it easy! You beat your brains out in the gym and have some great results, you’re in great shape but now the progress is slowed dramatically, stopped or even seems to be backsliding even though you are still working at max levels in the gym. You, my friend, may have another version of overtraining issues, the dreaded plateau! This one is the easiest to fix – luckily! Fixes to this problem can be as simple as taking a day or two off, or trying different activities in the gym. You’ve been running on the treadmill for cardio? Try the elliptical machine, or perhaps even the rowing machine. It will shock your body into further improvement

Repetitive strain disorders occur when you perform the same activity over and over again, and it eventually wears down your recuperative abilities, locally. One of the most common repetitive strain disorders is one I’ve already addressed, tendonitis, but others that are really common in fitness are Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Plantar Fasciitis. These three issues can range in severity from mildly annoying to utterly debilitating. The trick to keeping it in check is to address the issue early on. For all of these maladies you should seek medical attention to make sure no serious trauma has occurred. Treatments can range from rest to braces, even up to surgery if left untreated for too long! So don't be a bonehead! Be a meathead, and get those achy spots checked! And when you can, GET IN THE GYM!!!

Harvest Moon Regatta features Sail-A-Thon For the second year, a Sail-a-thon to raise ovarian cancer awareness will be part of the Lakewood Yacht Club’s Harvest Moon Regatta® which will race from Galveston to Port Aransas over October 17th – 20th. The beneficiary of the Sail-a-thon proceeds will be the Judith Liebenthal Robinson Ovarian Cancer Foundation (JLR Foundation). This was created several years ago to honor Judy Robinson, a long-time member of Lakewood Yacht Club and participant in the Harvest Moon Regatta®. The Judy’s Mission trophy honoring Robinson will be presented to the skipper who raises the most donation money for the event. This will take place during the Harvest Moon Regatta® Awards Ceremony to be held the evening of Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Port “A” City Pavilion.

HYC Fall Series #1 Judy Robinson, founder of the JLR Foundation, is pictured at the helm of her boat 'Dixie Apple' racing on Galveston Bay.
Robinson was an avid sailor, boat owner and racing participant. She was a member of the Harvest Moon Regatta® Committee for years and was a great supporter of the event. Despite a healthy lifestyle, Robinson was diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer in 2009 and died within a year. While battling ovarian cancer, she was determined to do something to raise awareness about the vague signs and symptoms and ineffective screening tools for victims of ovarian cancer. She and her friends then created the JLR Foundation. The JLR Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Houston dedicated to raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and to funding research. Skipper Stuart Lindow and crew won Series 4 and is in the lead of Series 5 of the Wednesday Night Sailboat Races. TEXAS CITY MUSIC BY THE BAY FESTIVAL • September 13 & 14, 2013 The 6th Annual Texas City Music Festival is a quickly growing noted community festival showcasing a variety of Texas Country, Zydeco, Blues and local talent the weekend after Labor Day since 2006. Austin-based bands like Marcia Bell and Kevin Fowler, Galveston’s own Hamilton Loomis, Zydeco great Leroy Thomas and powerhouse Randy Rogers Band were just a few of the acts in 2011. This all-ages music festival has set itself apart by showing a commitment to booking emerging artists and big name entertainment. Recognized for fostering a unifying community and fun atmosphere, the Texas City Music Fest by the Bay has hosted groundbreaking big TEXAS MUSIC. The Texas City Music Fest by the Bay is a local event with growing surrounding county appeal.
ACTIVITIES The Texas City Music Fest by the Bay has activities to keep both young and old entertained all day. The wide variety of arts, crafts, and food vendors should satisfy any appetite. The benefit, hosted by The Cock-Eyed Seagull (and staff) and headed up by musicians Kevin Fenton and Steve Revak, was to help local photographer and SCENE columnist Andy Eng with his medical expenses incurred for his cataract surgeries. Earlier this year, Eng came to the realization that his eye sight wasn’t what it used to be, and frankly, could not put off the costly sur-
geries any longer. His friends in the music community and beyond stepped up in full force to help this high-spirited friend to all. The staff at the Cock-Eyed Seagull coordinated a silent auction, several 50/50 raffles and donated a percentage of the bar business to Eng. The food was generously donated by Barry and Melissa Terrell (owners of T-Bone Tom’s and Tookie’s), so that 100% of the money paid for lunch went directly to ~ Betsey Ennis Eng. Much love was felt for our friend Andy Eng!

“The first is titled ‘Hammock In The Keys’ and debuted on Bourbon Street in front of Parrott Heads (Jimmy Buffett fans) from all over the country at the event Pardi Gras. We sold every CD we brought and became national overnight in the “Parrott Head Trop Rock’ world. The title track was up for song of the year at the 2011 Trop Rock Music Awards in Key West, Florida!” Their second CD “Live From Cozumel” was recorded at the Iberostar Resort in Cozumel in Mexico on the first Southbound Trip to Mexico with 80 fans; hence, the need for a trip back!

The shows are highenergy, interactive, and will surely leave you talking about it long after you have seen one. Their debut album is also named Dirt & Diesel with the single “Road Trip” being released this month. As of press time, Fuller and his band were nominated for six Houston Press Music awards, including Best Country Band and Best Male Vocalist categories. Some of Southbound’s favorite original songs to perform are “Islamorada,” “Ride The Wave,” and “Raise your Glasses Shake Your Asses.” They do play a large variety of cover songs like “Southern Cross,” “5 O'clock Somewhere,” “Chicken Fried,” “The Joker,” and anything that the crowd requests. “Anyone who wants to show their appreciation for what they hear, can send a Bud Light and a Cuervo shot up to the stage,” said Steve, and added, “Please.”
Davin James' music is more "black water" than “red dirt.” That's probably because he grew up watching his father play guitar on lake banks in North Louisiana and South Arkansas. He came to Kingwood, Texas, in 1978, at age 13 and was prompted to play guitar by his father with a $100 bribe. He got his first electric guitar with that money.
For the rest of 2013, Southbound maintain their “party bus” status while performing for “great fans in great atmospheres at great venues.” They are currently writing and working on their third CD that could release sometime next spring.
Through the ’80s, he played honky-tonks, covering Hank Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as Top 40 country songs. With a little credibility, James started running with other notable songwriter/entertainers as he puts it, “We helped the Texas Music scene get kick started from a dead ’80s market.”
“It definitely takes a village to keep things running smoothly and keep me and Jimmy between the navigational buoys,” said Steve. “We would just like to thank all of our friends and fans for their continued support of Southbound which makes this crazy ride worthwhile!”
Since that time, James has seven CDs under his belt, has songs in movies, TV, and advertising campaigns, sang jingles, produced many other projects, hosts Puffabelly’s Songwriter Showcase in Spring, Texas weekly (for 10 years now), and performs over 100 shows a year. Jimmy's family has a proud tradition of serving the United States Armed Forces. “Southbound puts the ‘rock’ back into ‘tropical rock,’” Steve said.” We do like to write and sing about the ocean, palm trees and the islands, but we do it in our own Texas Rock style.” Some influences he cites are Jimmy Buffett, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown and Texas country artists such as Josh Abbott and Pat Green. “We have two CDs of original music out,” said Steve.

These days, the band includes David Hargraves, Danny D, Donny McCorquodate, Kevin Taylor, Jack Horn, and Freddy Krc. In July, we enjoyed a Cold Feet set during a Moon Dog show at the Cock-Eyed Seagull. Quite a mouthful, yes, but what is important to know is to keep Cold Feet and Moon Dog on your radar. They’ve got a gusto and zest for the classics that doesn’t lie which we know you’ll appreciate. Book ’em if you can!
moment, the kind that makes you glad you were there. In July, we were treated to THREE of such shows - Big Country, Starr Jernigan Band and Cold Feet. The Big Country was a splendid evening for many reasons - It marked the return of the popular ’80s band to Texas with The Journey Tour after a 20-year hiatus (to Scout Bar, of course). They boast arguably the hottest fatherson guitar duo happening with Bruce and Jamie Watson. The band has also been rejuvenated with an upbeat Mike Peters (Alarm) on lead vocals and Derek Forbes (Simple Minds) popping on the bass. Owner Thomas tells us there are lots of exciting shows coming to Scout Bar. Stay tuned in and “Stay Alive!”

The Starr Jernigan Band is another fine example of the gusto produced out of the Texas Gulf Coast, a place we call home. A great Thursday Biker Night crowd was present at Jackie’s Brickhouse to catch one of the final shows of the Starr Jernigan Band. This group is a rare collaboration of talent whose members are in themselves forces of nature. Starr lays out tasteful lead break solos solidly in the realm known to Starr Jernigan Band @ Jackie's Brickhouse mortals as channeling. Her band of Myrna Sanders on bass, Clint Glaze on keyboards, and Jason Padilla (plays like Keith Moon) are all master class musicians each capable of fronting their own band. Music insiders understand the forces which give us great music occasionally require the recreation of its players and as the Starr Jernigan Band enters that phase in the days ahead, we join the many of you thanking them for their musical treats we have enjoyed while they were together. The place can boast “Never a Parking Problem!,” a new music stage and more seating which is gold star worthy. We stopped in to catch local favorite RockitBayou on the new stage and with the new lighting system. They looked (and sounded) great! Former Rockit Bayou Lead Singer Leah Howard has moved on to her hot new gig as Super Mom, and joining the boys is Ashley Hennessy – a singer we first sampled at the Zone 504 karaoke finals last year. - Continued on Page 44
We stopped by T-Bone Tom's ever-hopping patio palapa and caught Andy and The Dreamsicles. It never ceases to amaze that no matter the crowd, the service at T-Bones is always utmost and satisfaction is tops. The Dreamsicle’s Kick Ass Brass is gelling into quite the formidable horn section capable of blasting through the roof with mezzo forte pizzazz. With Randy (Ninja Guitarist) Hughes, Jeff Hoke (drums) and Andy Upchurch in the captain’s seat, this band reminds me of the new Houston Rockets, having the pieces and what it takes to make it all the way. Down the street deeper into the Lighthouse District, we spotted a new rack of SCENE magazines at the LOCO Deckhouse and stopped in to check it out. This is a perfect place to catch the Kemah Breeze, avoid the waterfront district mobs, catch up with friends, and enjoy good music. In July, we took in a few sets from Music Meister Chad Ware along with Chris Whitten and Bob Hawkins on bass and fiddle. By Rhonda Meredith “Some go east and some go west; you know, we go south because that’s what we like the best…” (Southbound, “Ride The Wave” lyrics) Once upon a time, there was a young man named Steve Johnson who grew up on Alabama’s Gulf coast. And once upon around the “same-ish” time, another young man named Jimmy Johns was growing up in Greenville, Texas. Well, one day, the stars would align (some will go on record as saying it was just loads of alcohol, but whatever) and bring their different experiences in music together to produce a unique sound…

That “some day” was March 16, 2008. Steve met Jimmy while he was playing a solo gig at a beach bar in Galveston. Jimmy was down from Austin on vacation. When Steve found out Jimmy could play a guitar, he invited him onstage. Jimmy performed the next three sets with Steve, and it was truly magical. The two played liked they had known each other all their lives.

“You never know why the ‘Islands’ choose one over the other,” said Steve. But the boys have been charmed since that day! “Things went so well that Jimmy put a saltwater bottom on his boat and moved from Austin to South Shore, and we have been rockin’ ever since!” Steve is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and the songwriter. Jimmy is the lead guitarist, vocals, and the band’s music director. When not performing approximately 150 to 170 shows a year in Texas, Louisiana, the St. Louis are (“We have a fan base there,” said Steve.), and between making trips to the Florida Keys, the pair tend to their day jobs. Steve is a V.P. of Business Development for McKenzie Tank Lines and Jimmy is a garage door sales person for Garage Door Services.

August and September are no exception as they welcome Buckcherry the Grammy award-winning hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (Friday, August 23), as well as American rock bands Buckcherry (Friday, September 6) and Filter (Monday, September 23). Bone Thugs-N-Harmony reppin’ Cleveland, Ohio, brings their 20th-anniversary tour named “Everything 100 Tour” to Scout Bar with a fully reunited lineup of all five of the original members: Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Wish Bone, Bizzy Bone and Flesh-n-Bone. Popular hits include “Tha Crossroads,” "Thuggish Ruggish Bone,” “Foe tha Love of $,” “1st of tha Month,” and “Look into My Eyes.” The group will release its new album, “The Art of War: World War III” later this year. Los Angeles-based Buckcherry unleashed their sixth studio album “Confessions” earlier this year, and the band has been touring relentlessly in support of the disc. “Confessions” is a well thought out concept album using the seven deadly sins as a guide. The well-spoken bartender was born in California, but grew up in Del Rio, Texas, before moving to Houston. Laurie has traveled to extensively with Alaska and Georgia standing out in her mind and being “really different than expected.” She loves calling Webster home now. The funny thing about traveling… She would get asked a lot about Texans “driving our horses” and people wondering where her cowboy hat and boots were. Truth be told, she is partial to flip-flops!

T-Bone Tom’s brings the region’s hottest country acts with their full bands under the largest palapa in Texas on Country-Fried Sundays. The music starts at 6 p.m. in “Tom’s Backyard” at 707 Hwy 146 in Kemah. Get there early for a great seat and enjoy the Smoked Barbeque Chicken plate with T-Bone Tom’s sausage and an Armadillo Egg (jalapeños stuffed with brisket and deep fried) for $12.49. Performing this month are Jody Booth, Thom Shepard, Josh Fuller and Davin James. Music is a family tradition for Jody Booth from Livingston, Texas, who is making his musical debut at T-Bone Tom’s on August 4. His mom taught him to play the guitar when he was just 8 years old, and he joined his first band while he was still in high school. Now, Booth is playing an average of 15 shows Jody Booth a month across Texas and while he doesn’t like to “drop names,” he modestly admits to opening for the likes of Willie Nelson and Tracy Lawrence. Booth’s music is pure and heartfelt with a gritty edge. His writing forged by a life lived in the trenches of responsibility with the lyrical vulnerability is startling in its honesty. “I’m a good observer of the human condition and I think it shows in my songs,” he said. His new album is “Heaven and Hell” and features the singles “Gold Digger” and “Jesus Loves Me.” The song “Gold Digger” is a honkytonkin’ tribute to high-maintenance women that I wrote in 10 minutes flat,” Booth says with a laugh. “It’s a real-life story that makes for a pretty good country song.” Thom Shepherd is an Austin-based touring artist performing on August 11. He is the writer of the #1 singles “Redneck Yacht Club” and “Riding with Private Malone.” He wrote the #1 Josh Abbott and Pat Green single, “My Texas,” and the #1 Kevin Fowler song “Beer Season.” He also wrote the title track of Tracy Lawrence’s Grammy nominated album “The Rock.” In total, the two-time cancer survivor and father of two has more than 10 singles and had over 90 songs recorded by artists including George Jones and Montgomery Gentry. “It’s always exciting when someone else records one of my songs, but there is no greater feeling than connecting with an audience,” Shepherd said. His own recent single "Simplify" was a Top 10 on both the Texas Regional Radio Report and the Texas Music Chart. He has been on nine tours performing for our military in 17 countries. “As songwriters, we have no idea how our songs are going to affect people,” said Shepherd. "I met a soldier in Qatar who told me he joined the military because of ‘Private Malone.’”

CELEBRATE THE “TREMENDOUS TWOS” By Rhonda Meredith In August 2011, Mainly Drinks opened its doors as a coffee and wine bar on 223 West Main Street in La Porte’s historic Sharp building. Since that time, Mainly Drinks has grown beyond “just drinks” to offer a complete lunch and dinner menu, live musical entertainment, and an art gallery hosting the works of local artists on a rotating basis. While taking a break from her law career, Mainly Drinks’ owner Deb Gallington attended the renowned Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston and took classes on wine and spirits. She shared her love of wine while working in the field and her passion naturally led to the next step in opening a coffee and wine bar in the downtown La Porte area – Gallington’s adopted hometown. uly was a great month for Texas’ “most spirited” craft brewery. We enjoyed more national exposure as the Discovery Channel re-aired the King Of The Grill reality TV show and the Galactic Guys apparently made a quick visual “appearance” on the E! network’s The Soap as host Joel McHale poked a little fun at the show. Houston-based Drink of Ages radio show on NEWS 92 FM invited the guys into the studio, and the brewery also made the front page of a Sunday (July 7) edition of the Galveston Daily News. But the most rewarding July experience was Galactic Coast Brewing’s first appearance inside the Houston loop at the HOUSTON SUMMER Houston Summer Brew-Off held at Hughes Hanger and beneBREW-OFF benefiting fited Homes For Our Troops. When we agreed to participate, Homes For Our Troops we didn't know it was a competition. We were sold on the charity it was benefiting – and that is what really matters. But there was an official score kept, and all the unbelievably positive feedback and people telling us they voted for us felt great! We are gratified to report our Sneaky Blonde placed 3rd out of the 24 commercial beers in the competition and the Rocket Ride finished 8th (of 24). Overall, out of the 12 breweries competing, Galactic Coast Brewing finished 2nd in total votes, just behind our new friends at Lone Pint. The other amazing and talented breweries that supported the troops by competing included Wasatch, Saint Arnold, No Label, Southern Star, Karbach, Fort Bend, Buffalo Bayou, Rahr & Sons, Shiner and Live Oak. But the real winner was Homes For Our Troops (learn more at https://www.hfotusa.org/) and all the beer enthusiasts who came out to enjoy possibly the greatest selection of Texas craft beer ever available in the Houston area at a single event.
