The Cock And Bull British Pub:
Fun Dining Fit For Royalty By Rhonda Meredith Beyond the doors at The Cock And Bull British Pub & Restaurant, located at 3659 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, is what looks like a set from a James Bond movie. Since opening in early 2012, The Cock and Bull has welcomed those in the neighborhood into the pub’s fun and distinctly British atmosphere. The dark wood bar, a rich red theme, and an eclectic mix of just about everything the British culture represents is parlayed into an overall comfortable and interesting setting complete with a large bar area, a dining area, a dart room, and a library lounge. Each room has an individual personality that’s fit for a king, the common man, and the legendary 007 himself. But it’s no mystery why the Bay Area is intrigued with British chef John Blythe and his uncanny skill creating mouth-watering dishes that are beloved by the Brits and becoming more and more familiar to Americans. Delight in the Steak and Mushroom Pie that is made with succulent pieces of Prime Rib in delicate gravy, or the Chicken Tikka Masala served with aromatic Jasmine rice and Naan Bread. Traditional menu options include Fish and Chips, Shepherd’s Pie with English cheddar mash, “British Style” Chicken Pot Pie, Scotch Eggs served chilled with a side salad, Bangers and Mash accompanied with sautéed onions, gravy, and baked beans. The Cock And Bull Burger is thick and hearty built from chopped chuck and short rib choice Angus beef, bacon, and an egg.
Cappellacci, a flavorful bacon-wrapped meatloaf, Abita Strawberry BBQ Ribs, Rosemary Grilled Chicken Breast, and The Cock & Bull English Curry and herbed Couscous made with lamb or beef. All food is cooked per order and cannot be rushed. Complete your dining experience by lavishing your taste buds with Chocolate Fondue for Two. Choose from either the Cadbury Spicy Dark Chocolate or the Dark Chocolate Orange to be paired up with seasonal fresh fruit. “We have some of the best bread pudding in town,” said Walker referencing their Chef’s Choice Golden Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce.”All our desserts are made from scratch.”
The Cock And Bull’s menu doesn’t stop there. Their “Chef’s Entrees” titillate the taste buds with the offerings of a Crab Stuffed Orange Roughy, Mint Crusted Lamb Lollipops, the Cock And Bull Blue Cheese Filet Mignon, Frenched Pork Ribeye with spicy fruit chutney sauce, Porcini and White Truffle
Customer of the Month: David C.
Relax and enjoy your evening with your choice of 18 different British and American beers on tap and more than 55 craft beers. The selections will vary. Once a specialty beer has “tapped” out, it’s gone and another brilliant brew will take its place. The lesson to learn is to visit Cock and Bull’s establishment often so you won’t miss out. As the beer offerings change on a frequent basis, so does the wine. - Continued on Page 13
October Events @ Cock And Bull October 5 (9 p.m. to 1 a.m.): Go retro on the first Saturday of each month and join Cock & Bull British Pub’s ’70s and ’80s Disco Dance Night with DJ OZ. Take note as local brewers explain what makes beer so great. $25 per person. (Tax and tip not included.) Cock And Bull: Continued from Page 10 Cock and Bull keeps plenty of unique and satisfying wines in stock to complement whatever dish you decide to order. A “True Brit Brunch” is available on Sundays and is served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. It includes a traditional British breakfast as well as a British carving station with roasted meats. The delectable menu features British and American culinary favorites. The British hospitality extends into the realm of catering with The Cock and Bull’s British Butler also known as “The Majordomo of Catering.” A majordomo is considered the revered head of the household. An astute position that is a privilege to attain as it is an honor to serve. In this case, it’s a hand carved roast prime rib buffet at the pub or the location of your choice.
HAPPY HOUR Mon-Fri • 3-6:30 pm
The pub also knows how to have some fun along with its food. Look forward to Monday Night Trivia, Ladies’ Night on Tuesdays, Half-priced bottles of wine on Wednesdays, and live musical entertainment on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Please note that the happy hour menu and specials are until 6:32 p.m. Why until 6:32 p.m. you ask? Owner Jeanette Walker explains, “Inevitably you are going to look at the clock and think ‘Oh no, it’s 6:30 p.m. and Happy hour is over!’ But, at The Cock and Bull, we give you that extra two minutes!”

This year’s show will have a unique lineup of vintage military flight demonstrations including a special 60th Anniversary Korean War Tribute presentation because the orignally scheduled USAF Thunderbirds and other military acts are grounded due to federal government budget cuts. It was noted in my column published in the July 2011 issue of this magazine that Texas and specifically our area was falling behind efforts in New Mexico, Virginia, Florida and other states to promote and attract commercial space development and space tourism by building a space port, but this is a positive step and the "Space City" does have built-in advantages ranging from plenty of space -Ellington is currently only one-third occupied -- skilled workforce, proximity to the home of US Manned Space Flight and easy access to offshore airspace.

It appears former Houston Texan Mario Williams got his mojo back after taking delivery of his new 446 catamaran “Big Bad Wolf” from Marine Technology Inc. this past summer here at the Texas Outlaw Challenge. Hakeem Olajuwon unveils new DR34M Shake Shoe at special Clear Lake event The scene is the historic and recently restored Jim West Mansion which is now the flagship store for Houston sports legend Hakeem Olajuwon’s luxury line of menswear, leather bags, suits, skin care products and as of last month, Italian leather-crafted basketball shoes.
Nassau Bay mayor Mark Denman gets an autograph from “The Dream.”
Despite a little rain, a line of excited and soon-to-be star-struck shoppers and shoe enthusiasts stretched from the front door to the parking lot for the first public event held at the mansion-turned-store which is otherwise open by appointment only. Although the new shoes turned out to be a hit and sell quickly, it was obvious that a chance to meet arguably the greatest center to ever play the game served as motivation for many who showed, some having traveled from hundreds of miles away and camped out in line over night. It was also apparent during the meet and greet that Olajuwon was humbled by how excited his newest customers were to meet him, and he didn’t disappoint, displaying his world-class smile and sincerely enjoyed interacting with his guests.
skills that made Olajuwon’s game so pleasing to the eye on the court, into making clothing and footwear that is just as aesthetically pleasing to the eye off the court. There was a lot of great looking merchandise available, but this particular day was all about the shoes--which looked and felt incredible. The difference between the high-end materials (100% Full Grain Italian Leather) along with craftsmanship (Vibram engineered outsole, DryBest Italian Lining and a four-layer structure) of the DR34M Shake Shoes compared to my off-the-rack Academy shoes was impossible to miss.
If Olajuwon’s rank among the greatest centers can be argued, everyone would agree that he was the most graceful big men to ever play the game. With a full arsenal of visually stunning moves, he has current players – from Kobe Bryant and LeBron James to Dwight Howard and Amar'e Stoudemire – seeking him out for private instruction.
The event went smoothly and the atmosphere was electric. Congratulations to host Ryan Fiterman of Fiterman Sports for an outstanding event. And congratulations to Mr. Olajuwon for creating beautiful clothing and footwear, and most importantly, for choosing the Bay Area's waterfront paradise as the base of operations and flagship location of the DR34M brand.

ocal artist C. Douglas Brookover often wears his art on his sleeve; whether it’s paint-splatter from a mural or his own handcrafted, wearable art. Brookover surrounds himself in his art as well. A black and white Marlene Dietrich portrait tops his table and his curtains are a tangible pun painted with a pop-art homage to Jane Curtain.
Brookover’s interest in art began at a young age. He stated he first started by drawing his bedroom on an Etch A Sketch. “I was drawing to scale at age six,” he said. Brookover later studied graphic and architectural design at the University of Houston Clear Lake. A master of multiple mediums and dimensions; he creates art of all types and textures including portraits, paintings, pottery, graphics, sculptures and even quilts. “I found art is how I contribute the most,” shared Brookover. His contributions not only involve art, but also his time. Brookover said he volunteers many hours each year to nonprofits and art festivals. Brookover’s artistic talents are as varied as the random patterns dripped onto his drop cloths. His murals and highway beautification embellishments can be seen from the Southbelt to the Galveston Causeway and a menagerie of commis-

sioned portraits and pieces in between. Brookover sketches charcoal portraits that capture the emotion and the moment much like a camera. It is only the fear of smearing any portion of the picture that keeps one from caressing the face he has so skillfully drawn. The timeless art of shadowboxing has become a veritable niche for Brookover. The three dimensional photo sculptures show literal depth which enhances the subject matter. Brookover’s most recent mural project depicts Galveston’s historic 1937 Martini Theatre during its glory days. The mural is located in a refurbished building directly across from the dilapidated theatre which is soon to be renovated. The mural’s unusual corner-of-the-room location makes for an interesting prospective and quite an optical illusion. Because of Brookover’s architectural rending background, he said the prospective was not as challenging as it appears. Brookover commented, “I wanted the mural to be the first you see when you walk into the room. It’s definitely much more of a conversation piece than a rubber plant.” To view more artist works visit www.facebook.com/cdouglasbrookover or email cdouglasbrookover@gmail.com.

Well to pull a Star Trek reference, we aren’t the Borg and resistance training is definitely not futile! The average male over 35 loses a pound of lean body mass per year. This is true of sedentary people. If you chose to keep with resistance training there is no barring your potential for gains, and the loss of muscle mass just doesn’t happen. Fatigue:
Continued from Page 25
Part of the treatment for both these conditions is weight bearing and resistance training. A new concern that’s in the news and in the fitness community is hormone regulation. Low T centers are popping up as often as Starbucks, and there’s a wellness center on every other corner offering hormone replacement therapy using bioidentical hormones. This only makes keeping you in the gym as you age that much easier, in fact hormone regulation becomes easier as you exercise more. Plenty of people use fatigue as an excuse to not hit the gym, but unfortunately, you can’t blame that on age. Fatigue is most often the result of poor or unbalanced diet, lack of cardiorespiratory exercise and/or stress. The best thing to counter any and all of those is... You guessed it! More time in the gym! Granted you can’t out-train a poor diet, but you can slow down the damage until you get your nutrition under control. The only age-related objection we’re left with is
the dreaded, “I don’t wanna.” Unfortunately, nothing can be done about that short of your friends and family using some cattle prod motivation, which is illegal in some states, I hear. So, when it comes to aging and exercise the best recommendation is to just get moving and most of the rest will take care of itself. If you don’t know how to start, seek professional assistance, but most importantly, GET IN THE GYM!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rick Hunter is a personal trainer who started as an Occupational Therapy practitioner, who chose to move into the preventative side of medicine after 10 years of practice. Since 2001, he’s helped transform lives in various settings and worked with many different athletes from people wanting to look better in clothes to figure/fitness competitors to elite martial artists to powerlifters. He has used NASM (PES and SFS) and IFPA National Certifications, and is studying the Anatomy Trains system to master postural correction. He is also the founder of Meathead’s Fitness, feel free to call 713-459-3427 or on Facebook.

Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence
of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

WINGS OVER HOUSTON AIRSHOW - Continued ning of American involvement in World War II. Several museums and organizations will display vintage aircraft, some of which they also will fly. The Texas Flying Legends Museum, based at Houston’s Ellington Airport, offers a collection that includes a rare and flyable Japanese fighter plane, an A6M2 Model 21 Zero, as well as a B-25J Mitchell Bomber, two P-51D Mustangs, a P-40 Warhawk, and a F4U Corsair. Other organizations participating in this year’s show include Lone Star Flight Museum, Lewis Air Legends, Vietnam War Flight Museum and Experimental Aircraft Association. The CAF’s Red Tail Squadron returns to this year’s show, showcasing its P-51C Mustang, Tuskegee Airmen, and RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit. The educational exhibit tells the Tuskegee Airmen story and how they overcame obstacles to be allowed to train and fight as the first African-American U.S. Army Air Corps pilots. Other highlights include the Legends & Heroes Autograph Tent, interactive NASA display, Neal Darnell and his record-breaking SHOCKWAVE JET TRUCK, and a children’s area including a rock climbing wall, a mechanical bull and Aircraft M-4 simulator rides. Roach said the airshow, made possible by hundreds of volunteers and many generous donors and sponsors, had humble beginnings in 1985 and has grown into a Houston family tradition that also attracts a worldwide audience. Show proceeds benefit the CAF’s efforts to restore and maintain historic military aircraft, provide scholarships to aviation students and provide assistance to numerous non-profit organizations in the Houston metro area. “We also have a very special tradition at Wings Over Houston Airshow that we call the ‘Special Show,’ which is for lifetime physically challenged young people,” said Roach. “We hold the show on the Friday before Airshow weekend for about 5,000 people. The Special Show, which is generously sponsored by the Hugh W. O’Donnell family, is the largest field trip for physically challenged students in this area.” Please visit the show’s website, www.wingsoverhouston.com, for updated information including performers list, airplane rides, exhibits and activities, ticket information and parking instructions. FOX & CATS: THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON LOVE By Rhonda Meredith
Josh Willems (guitar, vocals) and Nicole Wigginton (drums) are both Clear Lake alums. “We have known each other since high school,” said Willems. “We started out in a four-piece band with two other friends back in 2010 which was mostly just for fun. After a while the other two members decided to move on and call it quits. We sat around for a couple of months not doing much at all. It wasn’t long before Nicole and I realized we still really wanted to be playing shows and working on new music. The two of us started booking shows and making plans of our own and it’s been amazing since.”
The twosome does their best to offer a sound not heard in the mainstream. Their brand of brash indie pop has a familiar feel, but still manages to stand apart. “Being a two piece helps us stand out,” said Willems. “Also, it’s not every day you get to see a pretty girl beat the crap out of the drums.”
The male/female indie rock two-piece Fox & Cats was officially formed in the summer of 2011 with the band name stemming from an inside joke about the sexy actress Megan Fox and about not-so-sexy house cats. Willems describes the duo’s sound as “nothing fancy, just deeply honest, straight-up rock and roll with emotion and passion." Fox & Cats released their first EP “This Is Your Brain On Love” in July, 2013. Willems, the predominant songwriter, says this about the release, “I write because it's cathartic. If I can take a bad situation, turn it into a good song, and those feelings aren't wasted. I'm a pretty emotionally driven person so that definitely shines through in my lyrics. We both appreciate high energy in music, both on records and live, so that was another goal of ours with this record."
Wigginton and Willems say their relationship as band mates and friends has grown tremendously since beginning this endeavor. “We’ve definitely had our share of ups and downs, but everything we’ve been through makes us stronger and brings us closer together.”
"Artistically, we strive to create music that will appeal to a wide spectrum of listeners while staying true to music we love and are passionate about," said Wigginton. “If anything, we just want people to listen to us with an open mind and hopefully get a sense of enjoyment out of it. We only make songs that we really like ourselves, so we hope other people like them just as FOX & CATS will be headlining at Scout Bar on Wednesday, October 9 much.” and you catch them again at SCENEfest II on Thursday, November 14.

Papa Blues Memorial Jam @ Neon Moon
PAPA BLUES MEMORIAL– About the time I started covering the local live music SCENE, Ike came by and whacked the area pretty hard - A very pivotal time when musicians came together helping out musicians flattened by the storm, through the efforts of GBAMA. One of the striking mentions we made back then was of a young metal rock band, Cymblem, who got washed away, showing up at a local open mic with nothing but a bunch of acoustic guitars, and the generosity of Papa Bluez, who gave the young lads his personal amp to start

their rebuilding process. Pretty cool, eh? The music scene lost Papa Bluez recently and a huge turnout of musicians gathered for a memorial celebration up the road at Neon Moon, a super little music hangout in La Porte. Memorials for fellow musicians are always abundant with inspired music and this day was no exception. It's been at least a couple years since we've been up to the Neon Moon. It was great seeing everybody up there and hope to cross paths again!

SCOUT BAR: Continued From Page 60 Walking Papers features bassist Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver) and drummer Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees). California thrash metal band Death Angel's first single “The Dream Calls For Blood” off their album of the same name debuted at #8 on Sirius Radio's Liquid Metal Devils Dozen. Experience the relentless speed and heaviness of their live show on Thursday, October 24 and afterwards be left feeling stunned at the sonic assault you’ve just experienced. Good times. Bay Area favorites Sevendust and All That Remains will be rocking the house on Friday, October 25. Get tickets early as this show will easily sell out. Sevendust is back with their ninth studio album “Black Out the Sun,” and All That Remains’ album “A War You Cannot Win” is out now. Don’t miss the Nashville-based rock outfit RED when they perform on Saturday, October 26 because shortly thereafter, they will be headed off to Europe for another headlining tour in support of their album “Release The Panic.” Jada Pinkett Smith, who is married to Will Smith holds her own when fronting HER band Wicked Wisdom. The California-based nu-metal band is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30. Thursday, October 31 marks the ninth time that the local, industrial metal band ERASETHEVIRUS have headlined Scout Bar's infamous Halloween show that is FREE for 21 and up. The sons-ofelectronic have a new song remix available on their website (www.erasethevirus.com) and Facebook page ERASETHEVIRUS titled “Love Bites” (Devour REMIX by Hugo Drax). It’s definitely a mood setting tune and perfect for the season. Beware! This song will haunt your mind! Born From Ruins and Saturn Will Not Sleep start the night. T-BONE TOM’S - One of the first bands I ever covered on The SCENE was the Navigators at TBone Tom's and followed up with the two during the month of September. The consistency and quality of both never cease to amaze me throughout the years. The Navigators have performed shows all over the world and one Benefit for KK Sheaves @ Jackie’s Brickhouse of the area bands who care enough to bring their own dedicated sound crew. You can always count on an enjoyable Navigator experience Keep them on your watch list!
CRAZY ALAN'S SWAMP SHACK - Full moons are bright moons and two full moons in a month make a Blue Moon which is what we had on stage at the Swamp Shack with John (JD) Doyle and Jeremy Bradshaw, two veteran Gulf Coast musicians Blue Moon Band @ Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack whom I've never seen before shared the stage as, of course, The Blue Moon Band. Boy was it good! The two mixed up a Kemah breezy jam of familiar covers soothing to the ears and soul. I highly recommend keeping an eye out to catch these two if you can. Heads up, JD's full Blue Moon Band will be opening for the upcoming Molly Hatchet show at 18th Street Fishing Pier that should be a burner. It's been a while since we've crossed paths with Jeremy and delighted hearing how his entire family has moved to higher grounds in Sante Fe and has recently added the title of "Grand Dad" to his resume. Cheers! Navigators @ T-Bone Tom’s
FIGHT LIKE A GIRL Was the mantra at Jackie's Brickhouse for the Benefit for K.K. Sheaves, a long-time presence in the local service industry. A huge army of volunteers helped make this event a dandy with an abundance of fun for all ages and the excitement sincere. Running the mic was area favorite, Mama Cass who kept things rolling throughout the afternoon. The staff at Jackie's was ever utmost hosting this heartfelt event. Nice job to all!

SIP AND SHOP AT
CAPS & CORKS
NOW OPEN AT BAYBROOK MALL By Rhonda Meredith The rumors are true; you can now drink responsibly while shopping at Baybrook Mall. Caps & Corks is an exciting new beer and wine bar located within the mall’s food court that you'll definitely want to visit next time you have some shopping to do. The domestic brands of frosty, cold beers include the Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Michelob, and Lone Star brands. Delight in the long list of the imported, specialty, and craft-brewed varieties such as Abita, Blue Moon, Southern Star Blonde Bombshell, Corona, Dós XX, Fat Tire, Guinness, Heineken, Honeybrown, Karbach IPAs, Land Shark, Modelo, No Label, Sam Adams, St. Arnold, Shiner Bock, Stella Artrois, Tecaté and Ziegenbock. Take any beer’s taste a little further with a kick, and turn it into a “Michelada.” The Mexican-style beer cocktail adds heat with assorted sauces, spices, and peppers. A glass of wine can also complement the pleasure of shopping. So enjoy a glass of Barefoot, Caps & Corks’ house wine, or perhaps a sparkling and sweet Moscato di Asti. The selection of wine you will find here is impressive and include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The wine blends are noteworthy for their names as well: Cupcake Vineyards, The Dreaming Tree Crush, Kendall Jackson, Ménage Trios and the list goes on. Are you an early shopper? Enjoy a refreshing Mimosa, Peach Bellini or Sangria while you shop for that new dress. If that isn’t enough, Caps & Corks wine-based margaritas and daiquiris are sure to please. Each and every frozen concoction is custom made to order with more than a dozen flavors to choose from, including Strawberry, Piña Colada, Blue Hawaiian, Orange Dreamsicle, Cosmopolitan, Sex on the Beach, Peach Bellini, Bubble Gum, Mango, Banana, Pomegranate, or Lime Margarita. Also on the menu are wine blends, Corona-Ritas, champagne, ciders including Redd’s apple/strawberry ale, Angry Orchard and a bevy of non-alcoholic frozen drinks, Red Bull, and sodas. These examples are a partial representation of what’s available. “Our menu is evolving and being refined to our customers’ tastes and expectations,” said owner Merlina Bajrami Porter. She said she and her husband and co-owner TJ (lifelong area residents) have mulled this concept since 2008. “We have been in this industry since 2006 and are very familiar with the TABC laws. So, we took this knowledge and applied it to something unique to the Bay Area.” The Porters expressed the long overdue need for Caps & Corks in Baybrook Mall. “For years, adults have had the option to enjoy a beer or glass of wine while they walk freely at many

family friendly places including The Kemah Boardwalk, Moody Gardens, Six Flags, Disney World and, now, even the Houston Zoo. What better place to add that amenity than to our mall?” said Merlina. The Porters approached the management at Baybrook Mall and their business notion was well received. They waited for the perfect space to open up, and then created a solution to effectively combine sipping and shopping. And if you are hungry, the proximity of the food court is more than accommodating or just call in an order to Café Adobe or PF Changs because they will deliver. Caps & Corks is open every day during mall hours. Happy hour is Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the specials include $1 mimosas, $3.50 house wine by the glass and $4.50 daiquiris and margaritas. A way to shop and sip has finally come, but that doesn’t mean one can’t SIT and sip while watching, say, football on one of their three flat-screen TVs. “Women tell us that they look forward to coming to the mall more often, and now the men tell us that they don’t mind having to bring their kids shopping or be dragged along by their wife anymore.” said Porter. “In addition to the everyday shopping experience, we are looking forward to making the upcoming holiday season a lot more bearable – one drink at a time!” Stop by Caps & Corks and welcome them to The SCENE!
