omentum continued to increase for Texas’ “most spirited” craft brewery in November. First, the utilization of new brite tanks and fermenters has allowed for increased production which will soon result in touchdowns at new GCB Outposts. Second, the launch of our third beer, the Goblin Hunter, was a huge success with very flattering feedback. So successful was the Goblin’s release, we have moved up the time table on launching our fourth beer, the Ejection Seat. The Ejection Seat is our unique take on the popular India Pale Ale (IPA) style but without using Cascade or Centennial hops like most IPAs on the market. As with the Goblin Hunter, information regarding the initial release of the Ejection Seat will first be announced on Facebook. So make sure you “like” us on Facebook to stay up to date on Galactic Coast Brewing. Cheers!

MASA SUSHI:
A CREATIVE & TASTY FUSION OF CUISINE By Rhonda Meredith Since 2005, Masa Sushi has successfully combined traditional Japanese cuisine with a splash of French flare. Masa Sushi’s Fusion Restaurant is located at 977 NASA Road 1 and Masa Sushi’s Sake Bar is at 1804 W. FM 646 in Dickinson. Both locations offer a welcoming environment amidst an American contemporary décor with Asian accents. Owner Michael Zhou and his wife Chi’s experience as chefs set the foundations for quality sushi and flavorful sashimi along with many other dishes. Though we use the word "sushi" to refer to all the delicious fish and rice, the word “sushi” actually refers to only the sweet, vinegared rice. If you order fish without the sushi rice, then it's "sashimi." Also, “masa” from the name Masa Sushi means graceful or elegant. The food terms may seem daunting if you are not well versed in Japanese cuisine, but Masa Sushi makes choosing your delicious lunch or dinner easy with the food’s description underneath the menu name. Remember that the friendly and knowledgeable staff will assist you in making the perfect selection for lunch or dinner. Whether you choose to sit at the sushi bar or in a comfortable booth or table, the atmosphere will suit your business or casual needs. Masa Sushi has an extensive menu that showcases the creativity of its owner. For example in the appetizer selections, the Japan Nacho is a twist on crispy wonton chips with jalapeño, avocado and cream cheese toppings. Japanese favorites such as onigiri (hand-pressed rice balls), sabashioyaki (broiled mackerel), as well as an assortment of udon and soba noodle soups are featured items. Recently added to the menu are two fresh Japanese-style ramen dishes. Miso Ramen consists of a miso broth (soybased), fresh ramen noodles, bean sprouts, roasted seaweed, crab, and braised pork loin. Tonkotsu Ramen mirrors the aforementioned, but contains a pork broth. Both menu items are delicious and have become quite popular with regular guests. Dinner entrees include multiple sushi and sashimi combinations, bento boxes, hibachi dinners, and the ever-awesome specialty dishes. Order the Masa Hot Rock Beef (thin-sliced rib-eye served with shaved garlic and special dipping sauce) and savor traditional Japanese table cooking in a whole new style. (Only at the Nasa Road 1 location.) The seafood connoisseur will want to experience the Seafood Konro (simmering shrimp, scallop, squid, snapper and vegetables on "kamisukinabe" paper). Masa Sushi’s fresh fish is flown in from Honolulu daily. Thinking outside the usual is a key component to the successful restaurant and the hand rolls and rolls prove it. Some of Masa Sushi’s best sellers really set them apart from any other restaurant. Two newest additions to the menu are the Super Happy Roll (super white tuna, shrimp tempura, fresh salmon, cucumber, avocado, smelt roe, green onion, shallot, cilantro, lettuce and spicy shiracha) and the El Dorado Roll (shrimp tempura, salmon, spicy tuna, spicy kani, cuFUSION SAKE BAR cumber, avocado, smelt roe, tempura flake, and brown mayo). 977 NASA ROAD 1 1804 W. Don't lose fitness momentum during the holidays Happy Holidays, my Hot Hoisters! This time of year your schedule will undoubtedly have many challenges to your commitment to your health and fitness. Parties, shopping, parties, family events, parties and let’s not forget a few parties thrown in there somewhere. You’ve worked hard all year, or whenever you got on the fitness path, let’s not derail that training train now! Remember that it’s a holiDAY and not a holiMONTH, and you’ll get into a better mindset to keep from losing all those hardwon results. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the temptations of the season, just remember the old adage, “All things in moderation.” One cookie won’t be your ruination, but the entire plate may prove
difficult to keep you on the same notch in your belt. The same is true for drinks. Enjoy yourself, but remember the hours you’ve invested in yourself can be undone pretty quickly with the heavy calorie intake of the season’s festivities! Average calorie counts for a serving of cookies, which is a lot smaller than you think it’ll be, is right at 140 calories. This is for packaged cookies, according to caloriecount/about.com. For the baked confections that are made by most holiday bakers, the calorie count sits a lot closer to 200 calories per cookie. A shot of straight whiskey, vodka, rum, etc., is right around 210 calories! Now if you throw in mixers, your drink can range from 250-1000 calories. That's from soda up to Margarita mix.
Now I don’t throw these numbers out to discourage you or encourage you away from the holiday festivities, only to remind you that every decision Fitness Columnist has consequences. Rick Hunter You can have your cake and eat it, too, but you’ll want to account for this in gym time. A few extra minutes of cardio per day can really help keep you from gaining the dreaded Yule bulge. Your metabolism isn’t going to immediately slow down just because you had a cookie, but you’ll need to help even out the numbers to avoid losing ground on the march to your goals. Continued>

MOMENTUM DURING HOLIDAY SEASON (Continued from opposite page)
A couple of quick tips to help with a little extra calorie burn during this season are actually simple things, but they add up. When shopping, park further out in the lot. Usually you won’t have a choice anyways, but hitting the back of the lot usually will get you out of the car faster and the extra steps when laden with your shopping will help burn a few calories. When going back to your car, carry your packages, don’t use a cart. I’m not saying do lunges with your packages, but let’s face it, lunges rock, and it’ll keep those buns toned! Have a great holiday Christmahannukwanzica, and GET IN THE GYM! Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. DECEMBER 2013
By Kelley Dawson No doubt you’ve seen the “longhornasaurus” at the Kemah Crawfish Festival and maybe even at the World’s Championship BBQ Contest. You’ve probably also seen those really cool “fish with attitude” around town at local restaurants and shops or even on national television. You know the art; now get to know the artist. Michael Alan Quinn grew up in Topanga Canyon, California; an area he calls “the artistic wilderness.” It was there that Quinn developed a fascination with animals often thumbing through magazines and books. He said he began creating his own clay creatures after being told by his parents that he couldn’t have an ocelot as a pet. Luckily for Quinn, his family lived next door to a tile manufacturer and he had access to lots of clay to mold his unique animals. In 1979, Quinn moved to Texas and currently resides in Santa Fe. During his 25-plus years as a professional artist, Quinn has sold thousands of his pieces all over America and the world. His unusual creatures capture you with their one-of-a-kind characteristics. Each piece has a tangible personality all its own. Quinn stated his art style “is both bright and dark, but always humorous.” The size of his works is a varied as the creatures themselves. Quinn creates paintings, small clay figures and large fiberglass sculptures. According to him, his animal

menagerie includes “almost all creatures past and present.” Quinn’s large “stunt sculptures” put the extreme in what he coins “extreme landscaping.” He shared that his work with larger pieces began when a longtime customer requested a life-size marlin leaping through a window. Quinn’s infamous “longhornasaurus” took over three years to build and travels several miles for hire for events and private parties. “It gives me a great feeling to see people smile ear to ear while I’m towing the ‘Longhornasaurus’ at 70 miles per hour on the freeway," he added. Quinn’s 16-foot tall Tiki is currently on display outside The Eagle’s Nest in Kemah. The piece was inspired by the Easter Island Moai and is made with EPS foam with a fiberglass coating. For Quinn, “making art is as much a compulsion as anything.” He said that he’s always found something to do creatively “whether it be drawing during math class or writing short stories when I should be working.” Just in time for Christmas, Quinn created lively and whimsical clay seaside-creature ornaments that are sure to add fun to your holiday décor. Quinn said you can often find him in his Santa Fe studio knee-deep in clay. For an appointment, call 832425-8661 or visit his website www.fishwithattitude.com His works are also for purchase at Sushi Coast and The Eagle’s Nest.

“12 Years A Slave” Premiers in Houston The movie “12 Years A Slave” had a special Houston premiere last month that packed hundreds of special guests into a Woodlands theatre, all because the monumental book has a Houston connection. The screening of this movie was hosted by Houstonian Frank Eakin, of Eakin Film & Publishing Company located in The Woodlands. Frank’s mother, Dr. Sue Eakin, brought new life to the all but dead memoirs of Solomon Northup, when she discovered the dusty copy on a shelf at a Louisiana plantation at the age of 12 in the 1930s. This would determine the future Dr. Eakin life’s path. She went on to write her master’s thesis about Northup’s story and after decades of research, produced the first authenticated edition of the book in 1968. In 2007, at the age of 88, she completed her final definitive edition with over a hundred pages of fascinating never-before-published images and unique maps that related to the story. Along the way she authored over a dozen history books and became an award-winning history professor at Louisiana State University. At her passing at age 90, her priceless archive that chronicled the life of the educated free black man, Solomon Northup, who was sold into slavery in 1853, was donated by her family to LSU. The Smithsonian Institute is currently creating a permanent exhibit featuring a portion of her “12 Years A Slave” research materials. Her family has continued her to carry on her work

and the support of civil rights. Dr. Eakin’s son Frank turned “12 Years A Slave” into an audio book that was a top-seller and performed by award–winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr. This bombshell book that helped ignite the American Civil War caught the attention of Hollywood and its “A-List”. Frank worked closely with Brad Pitt and his film company, Plan B, to make his mother’s lifetime research a film reality. The special screening night started with a cocktail reception and Hollywood style Red Carpet in The Woodlands with lines of limos and TV reporters. After the screening of the movie, the deeply moved crowd went on to the Hyatt Market Street for an after party and book signing by special guest Ken Morris, the founder and president of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives. - Continued on Page 28

Galveston County Food Bank presents “Celebrating Our Past, Inspiring Our Future” Fundraising Gala The Galveston County Food Bank (GCFB) will host its annual fundraising gala on Thursday, Dec. 12 at Butler’s Courtyard, located at 122 N Michigan Avenue in League City. The food bank is a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to helping those who fight hunger in Galveston County.
our community without the assistance of our 43 partnering agencies, “ said Becky Trout, president of the GCFB Board of Directors.
The Galveston County Food Bank has undergone significant growth over the past decade, transforming from a small facility on Galveston Island to a large food distribution site for 43 partner agencies who feed hungry families all throughout Galveston County.
The Food Bank recognizes that one in five, or nearly 52,000, Galveston County residents experience food insecurity daily. Every dollar raised through this event will supplement four meals.
“This has been a tremendous year for the Galveston County Food Bank,” said Natalie Clarke, community relations director for GCFB. “We have so much to celebrate and so much opportunity that lies ahead. We appreciate the support from our friends of the food bank and hope everyone interested in ending hunger in Galveston County can join us for the gala and help express our gratitude to our partnering agencies.”
“The face of hunger is all around us. It could be your neighbor, a co-worker or an elderly patron at your church. We serve individuals each day who struggle with food insecurity due to a job loss, a cut in pay, increased grocery prices and for many other reasons,” said Twila Lindblade, executive director of the Galveston County Food Bank. “We believe that providing access to nutritional food will allow these individuals an opportunity to better themselves and their families.”

This year’s gala will honor those individuals in our community who have gone above and beyond to serve those in need. The event, themed “Celebrating Our Past, Inspiring Our Future,” kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, followed by dining, live and silent auctions, and musical entertainment. The Food Bank will recognize the agency, education and faith-based leaders who have dedicated their lives to serving others
Morris is the 4th great grandson of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington (the two families intermarried). At the after party many stood in line for autographs and photos as he spoke of his organization that is presently combatting present–day slavery in the form of human trafficking. Frank, along with his family, friends and partners celebrated with a toast of champagne of the journey of his mother’s book and then his journey to get it to the silver screen. Before the Houston movie premiere, Frank was treated by Brad Pitt to the Hollywood premiere and all the glitz and shared many of those stories during the after party that was filled with Houston area actors and film industry people. When asked how he felt seeing his mother’s book into an epic movie, he said, "Well it's a very emotional moment for me and my family. When I saw it I felt like I was going to spontaneously combust." “12 Years A Slave” is getting Oscar buzz in many categories including actor Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup and director Steve McQueen as director. This is a must see movie that has won at many worldwide film festivals before the commercial release. For more information on the book and Eakin Film and Publishing Company visit their website, TwelveYearsASlave.org. Addionally, the book and audiobook would be a perfect holiday gift for anyone interested history and one man’s fight for survival and freedom pre-Civil War.

The quarter-mile indoor track is located at 12552 Old Galveston Road (Highway 3) in Webster, across from Ellington Field. Enjoy real head-to-head racing, and discover why indoor karting is the fastest-growing sport in the United States. Best of all, the action takes place inside a comfortable state-ofthe-art climate-controlled facility, and there are no fumes like the ones caused by running traditional gas engines. The Bay Area is home to one of 11 Pole Position Raceway franchise locations in the United States. FEATURED ATTRACTION | POLE POSITION RACEWAY
W
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29: Pole Position Raceway was built for racers, by racers. The entertainment venue offers a wide variety of race formats, and the typical race lasts about 10 minutes. The most-popular racing format is the “Arrive & Drive” program that allows customers to show up individually or in small groups and race in standard races. Races are scored on the single-fastest lap time, which is shown in real time on large projector screens and printed on a “SpeedSheet” after the race. The “SpeedSheet” allows each driver to check a wide range of race statistics. Although memberships aren’t required to race, Pole Position Raceway offers several annual membership options that provide race discounts along with membership t-shirts and other valuable benefits. Membership options include the standard race license, VIP, Platinum, or the Family Platinum. A temporary race license is required for non-members and is valid for seven days. Pole Position Raceway also offers group experiences like birthday parties, corporate events, and team building for the unforgettable adrenaline rush. Full facility rentals are also available. For the holidays, Pole Position Raceway is offering gift packages for $69 and $169 that include two to three races, annual memberships and race license, a special Monster t-shirt, and packaged in a cool carrying bag. Racers can go online to www.polepositionraceway.com, choose the Houston location and view the schedule of events to confirm racetrack availability. Every participant at Pole Position Raceway must sign a release of liability waiver. This form may be downloaded, completed and brought to the track in order to save time. A normal walk-in racer can do this as part of their computerized registration process during the first visit. Call 281-581-7223 (RACE) with any questions. “Our racers can now save even more money by signing up for our MOBILE VIP Service,” manager Brandon Barron pointed out. “Getting a good deal can be as easy as registering in only a few seconds. Just text ‘RaceHouston’ to 90210 to become a MOBILE VIP and receive outrageous savings!” The end result is North America’s best motorsports entertainment venue, and nowhere else can you find the adrenalin rush created by this type of side-by-side race action. It’s so good that it’s been called the ultimate indoor entertainment. Their hours of operation are Sunday from noon to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday from noon to 10 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., Saturday from noon to midnight. *This Pole Position Raceway is franchised through P2R Karting, Inc. and is independently owned and operated by Houston Karting and Entertainment, LLC.

SCENE SONGWRITER SPOTLIGHT • MARK LUM: Continued From Page 52 Then life happened and the ownership changed hands and Lum found his way back to Texas. For a year, he held a day job and didn’t pick up a guitar. This wasn’t an easy time for someone who had taught himself how to play the guitar at age 12. Lum’s father was a traveling musician, so music is in his blood. Eventually, he pulled himself out of “the lows” and thought, “I am supposed to be jamming.”
Scout Bar opening for Cassette Tape and 40 Oz To Freedom, a Sublime tribute band. Lum is also a member of Lambs To Lions, an original music band, with area musicians Rick Reckkio and Chris Mitchell. Lambs To Lions’ sound is “more sophisticated, progressive, reggae rock.” They perform regularly at Cock-Eyed Seagull. And about the people he has met and formed friendships with since being back in Texas, Lum said, “The Bay Area music scene has a network of musicians that is very supportive. The nicest people you would ever want to meet.”
Lum attended area open mic nights and met Jeremy Mallatt and Nathan Karpiuk. An easy friendship began and led to the formation of Alvin and the Slickpunks just over a year ago. The popular reggae and punk-styled band was honored with a nomination for Best Reggae Band by the Houston Press earlier this year. Check Alvin and The Slickpunks out on Saturday, December 14 at
Lum’s philosophy is simple. Life is what you make of it. “Sometimes things go wrong. It’s just the way life is,” he said. “Out of life’s torments arises a more passionate singer/songwriter. Some of the best music comes from a bad life that’s been turned around.” Nowadays, life is pretty good. Lum’s current projects keep him busy. “2014 will be THE year,” he said. He is looking forward to a new chapter of his life to begin and start back in school and record some music. The laid back musician will still be performing barefoot “or in flip flops at best” and will continue to host Cock-Eyed Seagull’s Monday Open Mic Night. “Hosting the Monday night open mic is enjoyable. You meet the area’s new talent and help fellow musicians.” Again, most people don’t leave Key West to come back to Houston, but some do… And when they do (and they are as nice and talented as Mark Lum is), it's music to all of our ears. SCOUT BAR: Continued From Page 50 The disco ball is still intact and Scout Bar has announced that DJ Nonstopp from Southbeat Music will be spinning on Sundays in the Green Room. Enjoy $6 pitchers and $3 Jagers all night. It’s free for 21 and up and $10 for 18 to 20. The guys are going to like the changes; the women will appreciate the small touches; and the bands who perform at Scout Bar will notice an easier “load-in” into a wider space and a closer monitor board for sound checks. The sound operator can play Oz behind the black curtain with an up-close view and provide an immediate response to a band’s needs. The vibe from Scout Bar has been one of excitement. Go check it out! Scout Bar has a non-smoking policy but offers two designated smoking areas outside on the back patio and in the side courtyard. Regular hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. On Sunday nights, Scout Bar showcases local and statewide talent as it hosts The Texas Buzz Show. Bands wanting to perform at Scout Bar can submit their interest via the venue’s website www.ScoutBar.com. Links to purchase show tickets are on there as well.

Signature Drinks: Bloody Mary – Take pepper-infused Starlite vodka (from the Treaty Oak Distillery in Austin and made with the Hill Country’s spring water) and combine with a spicy Bloody Mary mix and house-made celery bitters (seasoning). Add a thick rim of bacon salt and garnish with olives, a slice of lime, and a spicy pickled green bean. The most beloved signature drink through the ages should be paired with the Greatest “Samich” In The World… literally. This entrée is created using two fried eggs, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and an awesome sauce served between two pieces of buttery Texas toast and a side of fries. On Sundays, the Bloody Mary is a steal priced at only $4. Stout Flip – Think about this… Blend together Cruzan Black Strap Rum (aged for two years in whiskey and bourbon barrels, gaining robust flavors and aromas of molasses, chocolate, anise, and brown sugar), Guinness beer, Averna Amaro (a sweet, thick Italian liqueur), maple syrup, angostura bitters (made in Venezuela with a closely guarded secret), and an egg. (But don’t let the egg scare you. Perhaps, it should DARE you.) You haven’t tasted anything like this before. Enough said. Complement this drink with the decadent taste of an Irish Sunday.

This dessert fuses a dark chocolate Guinness brownie and Nutella ice cream that’s topped with Jameson Irish whiskey caramel, candied almonds, and whipped cream. Bask in the sugar glow – It suits you. Lemon Berry Daisy – No. 209 gin has a citrusy, floral and spicy, slight minty hint flavor. Muddle the spirit with blueberries to make a gorgeous color of liquid. Add a touch of lemon juice and simple syrup. Garnish with a mint leaf, a single blackberry, and a lemon curl. This refreshing adult beverage is served in a frozen glass with frosted daisies and goes well with Tater Tachos. The “snack” consists of tater tots covered in pork, tomatoes, red and green onion, bacon, queso, jalapeños, and jalapeño ranch dressing. All classic cocktails are $1 off on Wednesday nights. Scotty’s Pub has a variety of signature drinks for everyone. Other beverages to consider are The Walking Dead, Maple Bacon Manhattan, Cucumber Berry Martini and many others.

The Hunger at Scout Bar
Music and entertainment-wise, the evening was perhaps the strongest ever in recent Scout Bar history – all of which giving way to perhaps something even better, a night to catch up with old friends from over the years who have been a part making the Hunger's Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Show, a part of their yearly tradition. It’s never too late. Make it a part of yours next year! Cheers! IT'S A WRAP - Winding up 2013 will be nothing short of a flurry this year. We've got the Kemah Christmas Toy Drive & Annual Pub Crawl hosted by Krewe du Lac coming up along with the annual Texas Buzz Music Awards around the corner. Spending time with friends and family is high up on our list and hope it’s the same with you, too. We've taken it in the Flyleaf at Scout Bar gut with the Texans, Astros, Dynamo, and space flight but flying high with the Rockets, local craft brew, and the finest in places to dine, drink, dance, and take in live music, out there in a place we call The SCENE. Adding to the excitement that Rapture offers during each performance is the spoton drumming of Houstonian Josh Compean. He has been associated with many top Houston bands and recently returned to town after working in Nashville. Guitarist Justin Roelant, a Virginia native has performed in Houston for many years. He is an accomplished musician with a superb vocal talent. Guitarists will want to check out his performances. Like Compean, Roelant also just returned from a stint in Nashville.

The versatility that these musicians possess is huge! Rapture performs rock, R&B, reggae, and an exquisite blend of Latin and American pop music. Throw in some of the best hits of the ’70s with a power-packed disco super-set and call it having the time of your life. When not providing entertainment for many of the Texans, Rockets, and Astros games, Rapture has taken the Bay Area stage by storm at Jackie’s Brickhouse, the Kemah Boardwalk and at Sherlock’s Pub. Rapture will be back at Jackie’s Brickhouse, located at 1053 Marina Bay Dr. in Kemah on Saturday, December 21. Currently the band is working on a CD of original music to be released in early 2014. This year, Cock & Bull The Cock & Bull has earned their way into one of my favorite places, along with many of you, to hangout and decompress with friends over a fine menu, superb bar (now a full bar!), and easy listening music in the air. Rapture at Jackie’s Brickhouse
Alvin and the Slickpunks @ Cabo’s SCENE FEST II Post Party probably heard of the local group Rapture. For me, I caught them for the first time at Jackie’s Brickhouse and wondering to myself: What took me so long? My colleague, Rhonda, has more about this cool group within this issue. I simply wish to mention that in the realm of local cover bands, Rapture takes it to more genres of popular music perhaps as good as, if not better, than any out there. The group’s ability to switch with ease between pop, rock, funk, country, blues, and Motown all while keeping the audience engaged making Rapture one of the stronger SCENE Party-Ready bands happening. Catch them and get your Rapture on!
We enjoyed a set of some clever interpretations of classic covers that were surprisingly bright, clever and refreshing. Destination Cabo: Always a good choice. We hope all you good people out there are having a great holiday season and taking time to enjoy family, friends, and good moments out and about on The SCENE. We’ve had one fine year hanging out with all of you, and – like many – we are looking forward to the better days ahead and a great 2014. But first, let’s run down some of the good times we had this past month as we close out the year.
ON THE WATER - After SCENE FEST II we followed the gang to Cabo for an after-party nightcap and some late night munchies. Things were cooking nicely at this Obsolete August @ Cabo’s SCENE FEST II Post Party
OVER THE TOP - Starting the month of November off with a bang was arguably the “funnest” and “bestest” after-work gathering on the planet, known as SCENE FEST II. I can’t get over how smooth this event happened with all the fantastic volunteers, outstanding eats and drinks, skilled organizers, tasty eats and drinks, quality vendors, awesome eats and drinks, quality full spectrum live music, and enough eats and drinks to make merry Mama Tried @ SCENE FEST II popular late-night hangout with Obsolete August on the main stage belting out their patented interpretations of popular Americana along with some very cleverly interpreted dance tunes which we’ve never seen before. Very well done! Downstairs on the Beach Bar stage, we caught a new group recently moved in from Florida calling themselves Alvin and the Slickpunks. SCOUT BAR aggressively upgrades venue By Rhonda Meredith Scout Bar, a multi-venue entertainment destination located at 18307 Egret Bay Boulevard, has rocked the Bay Area for the past ten years and is headed in a new direction of sorts. And the change is good. Due to recent renovations, attending and enjoying an energy-fueled concert powered by more than 20,000 watts of audio accompanied with a stateof-the-art lighting system has never been easier. The front entrance has been moved and is now complemented with a more efficient box office with two windows and up to four ticket handlers. The rock lounge’s main stage has grown approximately 25 percent in all the right places and is now a true rectangle. It’s noticeably deeper and wider and gives the wide variety of local, regional, national and international musical artists and touring acts more room to perform. One of Scout Bar’s biggest changes is in the Green Room. What has been coined “a club within a club,” should now be considered more of a “pub within a club.” Yes, the Green Room is in the process of being renovated into a modern pub with a classic red, black, and white décor. UFC fights will be shown on the numerous flat screen and projection TVs with the first being on Saturday, December 28. Enjoy the title fight between Chris “The All-American” Weidman versus Anderson “The Spider” Silva while partaking in Scout Bar’s new food service and drinking craft beer. That’s worth repeating: Craft beer. Food service. On Friday, December 6, an assortment of craft beer choices was added to the Green Room’s fully stocked bar, and it is the first day of the new food service. The menu consists of five simple bar food items: a 1/3-pound burger, sliders, Southwest egg rolls, hot dogs (garlic grilled, pulled pork, or

blue cheese), and a quesadilla filled with grilled chicken, feta cheese and spinach. “The idea stems from being able to have a good burger or bar food and drink some craft beer before or after one of our shows or events,” said Thomas Wilson, Scout Bar’s owner. His direct involvement in the changes keeps the venue’s personality intimate. Scout Bar’s unique interior design has personal touches everywhere. The autographed guitars and tour posters are pieces of visual history interwoven between the cool pieces of original art from a local artist that adorn the walls. A mural on the back wall proclaims a Pablo Picasso quote, “Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.” This could represent the improvements being made: In the Green Room, old flooring has been replaced with new flooring, more TVs have been installed, updated seating and décor touches are evident, and three aluminum garage doors with windows are in place where a wall once was. The garage doors can be opened or closed depending on the amount of the crowd in the rock lounge. And the pool tables may be moved accordingly as well for more space. - Continued on Page 37

“The name Rapture as described in the dictionary as a journey to a beautiful place, to be in ecstasy, or an experience of being carried away by overwhelming emotion,” said band manager Dennis Lange. “So we think of it as a musical journey to a beautiful place.” The journey is guided by some of Houston’s most recognized and favorite musicians. Keyboardist and musical director Henry Banrevi is well-known in both English and Latin circles
in the Houston music scene. Banrevi has performed on many television shows including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show and Sabado Gigante with Don Francisco, the number one show in all Latin America. At 12 years old, he moved from Venezuela to study at The Boston Conservatory of Music. Bringing a serious level of expertise to the lead vocal position in the band is Constance Washington. She is known for her exciting vocal talent and work with The Ensemble Theatres in Houston. Mark Lum
Abbey Road/ Already Gone
Most people don’t leave Key West, Florida, to come back to the Houston area, but some do…
Saturday, Dec.14 JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
Bay Area singer/songwriter Mark Lum grew up in the Pasadena area and moved to Key West in his early teens. “School was tough. My mind was on music, the beach and girls,” he said. His first gig was when he was 17 years old. From then, he performed on and off for two years around the Key West area while taking a Greyhound back and forth between Texas to visit his mother and back to Florida to live with his father. One night, Lum was performing at an open mic in Key West and the very next day, a bar owner, who caught Lum’s performance, made contact and requested Lum come work for him singing at his bar. “It was great. I was working four nights a week and making good money.” - Continued on Page 37
