ast year was full of growth and excitement for Texas’ “most spirited” craft brewery. But the momentium increases in 2014 as we complete construction on our new, self-engineered brewhouse and bring more brite tanks and fermenters into the mix. The Rocket Ride, Sneaky Blonde and Goblin Hunter will soon be landing in new cities along the Galactic Coast, and we are very excited about the launch of our fourth beer, the Ejection Seat. The Ejection Seat is our unique take on the popular India Pale Ale (IPA) style but without using Cascade or Centennial hops like most IPAs on the market. As with the Goblin Hunter, information regarding the initial release of the Ejection Seat will first be announced on Facebook. So make sure you “like” us on Facebook to stay up to date on Galactic Coast Brewing. It is probably obvious that we take pride in our local community and its impressive ties to the exploration of the seas, skies and beyond. So right as this ad goes to press, we are proud to have temporarily lost our team member Curt while assisting with the emergency spacewalks aimed at saving the International Space Station. The rest of the GCB crew is looking forward to raising a pint to Curt, everyone else at JSC/NASA, veteran spacewalker Rick Mastracchio and rookie spacewalker Mike Hopkins following what we expect will have been successful spacewalks by the time you are reading this. Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack:
Going Crazy Over Crawfish By Rhonda Meredith The crazy Cajuns at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack sure are crazy about those “mudbugs.” The New Year kicks off the 2014 crawfish season and the craze is going strong at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, located at 310 Texas Avenue at the base of the beautiful Kemah Bridge. The restaurant’s boiling pot has runneth over with crawfish, as well as shrimp, lobsters, and swamp spiders. (The latter is “crabs” for you non-Cajuns.)
It looks like Boudreaux and Thibodeaux are at it again… Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack is pleased to announce the opening of their second location in East Houston on I10 at Federal Road. Stop in and enjoy the same outstanding Cajun food and customer service found at the base of the Kemah Bridge!
Consider the crawfish specials Crazy Alan’s has Mondays through Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Monday and Wednesday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. Get to “pinching dem tails and sucking dem heads” for only $3.99* per pound (*$4.99/lb. the early weeks of January. See Publisher’s Note below). Savor the delectable Cajun flavors from the spicy water or “Cajun bath” the crawfish is cooked in.
truly channel your inner Cajun, it would be best to order another appetizer like the “Swamp Shack Sampler” and taste some of Crazy Alan’s favorite starters. The “Smoked Oyster Swamp Shack” is a favorite among customers, too. It’s hard to resist these flavors: smoked Parmesan, smoked Ponchatrain, smoked mango salsa, smoked Mexican jalapeño, and smoked pico. Each flavor is topped with garlic butter, a piece of shrimp, and mozzarella.
On Tuesdays, the Swamp Shack features another boiled pot special of fresh, shucked 50-cent oysters on the half shell or succulent blue crab for $5.50 per pound. Say yum-mee! Baby, it’s been cold outside and the perfect temperature for a bowl of gumbo, crab corn bisque, or homemade swamp chili. The Louisiana Swamp gumbo comes in either sausage and chicken, or shrimp and crab. Both are filled with swamp veggies and secret spices in a dark brown roux. Or maybe opt for a “Swamp Snack.” Salads are offered, but to
The Swamp Shack’s reasonably priced “Da’ Main Korse” dinner menu features many great food choices that are homemade fresh in the kitchen: jambalaya with “anduuwee” sausage, shrimp, chicken, catfish, rib eye steak, alligator, and more. The Trout Medallion (two trout filets blackened and wrapped around Cajun stuffing, topped with six blackened shrimp and Ponchatrain sauce) will hook you at the first bite. - Continued on Page 15
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: After this issue’s cover and glossy pages went to press, the weather in Louisiana took a turn for the worst resulting in less crawfish emerging from their holes to be harvested and forcing abnormally high crawfish market costs for the start of the season. This is a fluid situation that will likely change deeper into the season. But the situation has forced the Swamp Shack to change their Crawfish SPECIAL in the first weeks of January from $3.99/lb. to $4.99/lb. – a price still better than will be available elsewhere on a consistent basis. Crazy Alan has personally made many trips to the fields of Louisiana in recent days and has assured us he is committed to offering the most competitive prices on crawfish even during shortages.

NEW BOOK SHOWCASES THE HISTORY By Peggy “Domino” Taylor There are several special books in the Images of America series that reflect our area, the most recent was history of Seabrook. Now the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Around Clear Lake from local authors Ruth Burke and Rebecca Collins. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of life around the Clear Lake area. With the coming of the Manned Spacecraft Center in the early 1960s, the Clear Lake Area became the center for cuttingedge technology and space travel. Soon to follow were numerous aerospace contracting firms and other high-tech enterprises, giving the area one of the highest concentrations of aerospace expertise in the nation. Nine distinct cities make up what is referred to as the “Clear Lake Area.” From east to west along the north shore are Seabrook, El Lago, Taylor Lake Village, Nassau Bay, Houston and Webster. From west to east on the south shore are League City, Clear Lake Shores and Kemah. The lake feeds into Galveston Bay, creating a waterfront lifestyle with the third largest boating community in the United States.

Images of America: Around Clear Lake takes a look at the history of this first suburban community in the Houston Metropolitan area. From the early days of farming ranching and oil, to its status as an area of cutting edge technology and space travel, the book chronicles the formation of the Clear Lake area. Author Ruth Burke has been preserving the history of the Clear Lake Area with her photographs since 1978. Her images have been featured in numerous publications, including The SCENE, and are a part of many private art collections. Burke is the owner of Seaside Gallery, located near the north shore of Clear Lake. Co-author Rebecca Collins is a journalist and a native of the

Local metal artist, Michael Gilbert views the world through protective goggles looking for ordinary objects he can turn into extraordinary art. Gilbert stated he’s been repurposing everyday items since he was a young child. He said, “When I was younger, I’d see something and ask myself, ‘What can I make out of it?’” Gilbert hunts through junkyards for metal items to turn into unique animal treasures. He said old junk car parts are one of his favorite metal mediums. Gilbert said he found that metal work was easiest for him. “Metal lasts longer too, especially in the Galveston area,” he added. Gilbert tried wood working once, but said, “I don’t like the saw dust. It’s not appealing to me.” Currently, Gilbert is forging his metal art for a living. He’s turning lawn mower motors into creatures and creating fish from fenders and rusted-out wheelbarrows. Gilbert admitted once making a pig out of a portion of an old state trooper car. Gilbert stated it was at the request of the Sherriff’s department for a police auction, and he joked he has since been too afraid to build another. Almost 20 years ago, Gilbert was working as an AC technician at a local company. Gilbert continued to create art pieces, but told he never sold any. Then, having heard about the Back Bay Market in Seabrook, Gilbert said he borrowed $50 from his mother for an art booth. “I did really well at the show,” he said. Gilbert next asked his girlfriend if he

could quit his job and work on his art fulltime. According to Gilbert, his girlfriend agreed with the caveat that if art sales slowed down he should get a part time job. Her suggestion was delivering pizzas, but Gilbert said he’s never had to find work other than his art. Gilbert said that he’s built his life and art on his good reputation and his love for what he creates. He shared that art comes naturally to him, and he believes his talent was God-given. He shared, “Art is something for all to try, but some are just born to it.” Gilbert’s one-of-kind works are definitely forged with a spark of imagination. His unique creations are engaging and sure to inspire conversation. “Art is truly a labor of love for me. I thank God every day that do what I love,” said Gilbert. Contact Michael Gilbert by phone at 281-467-8141 or visit www.mikesmetals.com. Limited pieces are also available at the Eagle’s Nest Gallery.

The Rule of P’s: Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance Felicitations, my Fitness Friends! Congratulations on making it to the new year! Now, let’s work on making you the best you ever! Doing so will take planning. Any of you who were in the military know the rule of P’s: Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. If you plan to hit the gym with a vague goal and no real plan to get there, you are just setting yourself up for failure. Take a few minutes to figure out specific goals and what it takes to get there. For instance, one of the most popular goals this time of year is to get leaner, tone up, drop weight, get skinny, etc. They all boil down to the same thing: lower your bodyfat percentage and improve muscular definition. To do this, a definite plan needs to be implemented, such as cardio, weight training and controlled diet. More specifically, you need to figure out how many calories, and
from what macronutrients, how much cardio, and what sort of weight/resistance training you need to do. Granted showing up to the gym is putting you way ahead of those people who are riding their couch to Fatsville, but to get the most out of your gym experience, you’ll need a solid plan in place to guarantee your results. A great idea for setting goals is to learn exactly where you are. Almost any fitness professional can evaluate your body fat percentage, and direct you towards an exercise regimen. Where you’ll see the biggest results is going to be in the kitchen. You'll hear the term “Abs are made in the kitchen,” this is true, but it’s true only if you get yourself eating the right foods. Search the Internet, and you’ll find many different fad diets that all look good on the surface
but are, in reality, difficult – if not impossible – to maintain in reality. Many are just unhealthy, and even worse, ineffective! Many of them focus on Fitness Columnist eliminating carbs, or fat Rick Hunter but the truth is all three macronutrients (protein, fat and carbs) are necessary for a healthy diet. RULE OF P’S: Continued from Previous Page the American Heart Association’s low fat diet. Cardio is a great adjunct to any fitness program, but it’s not the entire fitness program. We all know that marathon runner who does nothing but run, and I’m sure you’re aware he/she’s fairly soft in the physique. Cardio alone doesn't do much to control your metabolism, the extra muscle gained from resistance training is what’s going to drive that metabolism through the roof! A 5 pound increase in lean body mass can improve your overall maintenance calorie requirement (metabolism) by up to 500 calories/day! And that's not even going to increase your size much. A pound of living muscle tissue is approximately the size of a golf ball, so there’s no worry about you suddenly turning into Helga from the West German Weightlifting Team. Plan your fitness routine out, or seek help planning it, and you will find you get much better results for all your efforts, but most importantly, GET IN THE GYM! -------------------------------------------------------

1996 and they have done several boat deliveries together through the years.
Gary had been working full time for Lakewood since 1990 while David began his career at Lakewood in December of 2007. Although born in Houston, David actually grew up in Galveston and moved to Hitchcock while in the sixth grade. Upon graduation from Hitchcock High School, he worked as a mechanic for Todds Ship Yard in Galveston in the areas of barge construction and ship repair. After Todds closed, he went on to other fabrication shops where he was a quality control manager and production manager for building containers.
Regarding his new position at Lakewood, David related that he is looking forward to carrying on all the good work that Gary has accomplished through the years. His first priority is having the grounds look beautiful so that members and guests have a wonderful first impression of the club. The second priority is to fix things as soon as possible if they are in need of repair.
In 1997, David established his own business, Fincham’s Marine which is a boat repair operation in the areas of mechanics, electrical and plumbing. He met Lakewood’s Harbor Administrator Lynda Hall in

CODY BARTRO TAKES OVER DOCK MASTER POSITION Clear Lake area native Cody Bartro has replaced David Fincham as Lakewood’s Dock Master. David Fincham is replacing Facilities Manager Gary Mathews who retired the end of 2013. Cody was born and reared in Clear Lake City, attended Seabrook Intermediate because his mother was a teacher there, and then graduated from Clear Lake High School in 2005. An only child, Cody enjoyed the sports of football (mainly), baseball and basketball in high school. Upon graduation, however, he played baseball at Northwood University, a private business university near Dallas, and earned a scholarship for the last two years he played there. Upon earning his Associate Degree at Northwood in Entrepreneurship and Small
Business Management, Cody transferred to Texas State where he earned a B.S. in Agribusiness Management. Cody’s working experience includes Clear Lake Parasail near the Nassau Bay Hilton where he worked for Dave Hearne. Moving to the hill country, Cody took a job as a dock hand at Canyon Lake Marina. He “worked his way up” to their party boat captain and then the Rental Manager under general manager Don King.

Veray mainly sings songs in Spanish which he knows is “risky.” But music breaks barriers, including languages. The Gaby Veray Trio recently released a live promo CD recorded from an October 2013 concert in a Houston theater with Tito Auger, the lead singer of Fiel A La Vega, one of the most influential rock bands in Puerto Rico. The CD contains four songs in Spanish and one in English. Veray cites his mother as his biggest inspiration. “Some of my

Everything else will take care of itself. He says time will take him where he needs to go and where he needs to be. In 2014, Veray’s New Year’s and birthday (January 18) resolutions include meeting the two newest members of his family (a niece and nephew), releasing a new CD, continue growing his graphic design company, and perform on the island. No, not Galveston in this instance! Veray is looking forward to introducing his music to his native Puerto Rico. Listen to Veray’s music on his ReverbNation page and like The Gaby Veray Trio on Facebook. He also hosts an open mic night on Thursdays at Fatty’s in Seabrook. Prospero Año Nuevo!

REPORT: Craft Beer adds $2.3 Billion & thousands of jobs to Texas economy In case you still had doubts that there is a Craft Beer Revolution going on here in the Lone Star State, you can look at the numbers -- specifically the number of dollars. According to a study by the Brewers Association, Texas is leading the nation in adding billions of dollars to the state economy and creating jobs by producing tasty craft beer. The study found that in 2012, craft breweries contributed $2.3 billion to the state economy and ranked fourth in the nation for employees involved in the microbrewing industry.
Those figures will grow once the calculations for 2013 are done and then continue to grow due to legislation reforming previous regulations on craft breweries and brewpubs. According to another report by the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, craft breweries could have an economic impact of $5.6 billion within the next few years as the climate and demand for craft beer in Texas conTOP 5 STATES: CRAFT BEER IMPACT tinues to STATE..........................2012 OUTPUT/INPUT strengthen. The Brewers As- 1. CALIFORNIA ......$4.7 BILLION sociation, a non2. TEXAS ................$2.3 BILLION profit with a 3. NEW YORK ........$2.2 BILLION membership of 4. PENNSYLVANIA ..$2.0 BILLION craft breweries, brewpubs and 5. COLORADO ......$1.6 BILLION homebrewers, re* SOURCE: BREWERS ASSOCIATION ported that Texas craft brewers generated more income than 48 states with only California finishing ahead in 2012 output.
Karbach Brewing destroys projections, announces $15 million expansion Houston’s second largest craft brewery, Karbach Brewing, is also the nation’s second fastest-growing brewery according to mathematical analysis done by The New Yorker. Local demand has been so strong for Karbach that the brewery recently acquired two properties that neighbor its Northwest Houston Brewery and will be breaking ground on a new $15 million facility during the first half of this year. "We’re very happy that we are able to grow without relocating entirely," explained brewmaster Eric Warner. "From an operations standpoint, this allows us to insure quality and consistency during the expansion, and it also allows us to be fully committed to development in the City of Houston." When it opens in 2015, the new facility will include an expanded tap room, private event space and a kitchen. But most importantly, it will allow the brewery to double its present capacity to 60,000 barrels annually. Karbach has seen exponential growth and is far ahead of even the most optimistic projections they calculated before launching in 2011.
In the past few years, the number of craft breweries in Texas has skyrocketed and some more established Texas microbreweries have become staples of the national craft beer market. But no craft beer market in the nation is as dynamic and set for growth as the one here in Texas. In a race to get a foot hold before the boom of Texas breweries can catchup with the demand for craft beer inside the state, the number of out-of-state breweries entering the Texas market continues to increase. Established craft brands like Founders Brewing (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Ballast Point Brewing (San Diego, California), Alaskan Brewing (Juneau, Alaska) and Firestone Walker Brewing (Paso Robles, California) all recently entered the Texas market to help quench the growing thirst Texans have for craft beer. But the best new development is that because of the package of bills passed last spring in Austin, local Texas breweries are no longer competing with out-of-state breweries at a disadvantage. Seemed common sense that a small Texas brewery shouldn’t have less rights to sell in Texas than a brewery or brewpub from California. And after many failed attempts to put common sense above lobbyists and political campaign contributions, legislative progress was finally made. The intent of the legislation was to allow microbreweries to generate more revenue and add jobs to the Texas economy, and the recent economic reports show that the laws are already making a noticeable impact. But there is more work to - John Ennis be done!

FEATURED BARTENDER: Cont. from Page 47 The most amusing or weird question you have ever been asked by a customer? I can't even think of anything specific. The most amusing things people generally refer to with me is the silly personality and asking if I’m “okay,” as in, like mentally. I'm okay guys! Really! This is natural. Natural, plus some energy drinks!
off every day and is continually striving to better herself and her situation after her divorce and not having a degree. She doesn't care if you are sick and dying, tired, or if you are lazy, you better get off your butt and work every day as hard as you can and earn your keep. I definitely try and take that attitude with me to work each and every shift.
Favorite thing about the Bay Area? The people! When I moved here after college, I thought I’d stepped into an alternate universe. Age here doesn’t matter. If you’re 21, you're taking shots! If you're 68, you’re taking shots!! It kind of blew my mind, but it’s great! That mixed with our lovely Texas southern hospitality makes for a really fun, welcoming environment anywhere you go. Other than your own, what profession would you like to attempt? I actually have a profession other than this. I work at an architecture firm as an indefinite intern and have been for almost four-and-a-half years. But ultimately, I would like to be a baker. I want to open a shop selling baked goods, cafe style. I would probably gain 50-pounds this way, but sacrifices! Right? What profession would you NOT like to attempt? I would never want to be a teacher. Don't get me wrong, teachers, I get it. You do good. But me? I could never do it. We do trivia nights at The Cock and Bull every Monday night (8 p.m., folks!), and in between each round, I have to grade the papers. It takes me forever! I can’t keep the eight whole answers in my shortterm memory, so I have to keep referring to my questions lists. And – apparently – I am a mean, harsh grader! Sorry guys, but if it’s wrong, it’s wrong. Who inspires you & why? I think both of my parents inspire me equally for different reasons. My dad inspires me because he is the type of person who could have nothing and still give you the shirt off of his back. He will sacrifice for anyone. I think that is important. My mom inspires me because she works her butt

Top 3 New Year's Resolutions for 2014: First: To do Yoga or exercise of any kind and try and stop these old joints from aging so fast! I'm 28, but I feel like I might be 70. Second: I would like to learn Spanish. I just need to start using the software I have. It’s becoming a big deal, and being bilingual looks good! Third: And most importantly, would be to get back onto upgrading my house and finally build a deck over the mud pit that is my yard! Wish me luck on that one...

SIGNATURE DRINKS:
BIG SHOTS!
COSMO: This Cosmopolitan drink is like none other. It is inspired by over 300 years of family distilling expertise. The Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, Holland, has been producing the highest quality spirits for 10 generations. Sometimes regarded as one of the capitals of spirits, Schiedam, Holland, is the place where brandy and Dutch gin were apparently invented. So, take the crisp refreshing vodka taste of Ketel One Citroen (infused with the essence of lemon and lime) and Ketel One Oranje (infused with the essence of orange), add a splash cranberry juice, and garnish with a lemon twist. Pair it with Big Shots lettuce wraps or perhaps a shrimp po-boy.
THE SCENE
THE MAN SHOT: This extra large shot begins with DeKuyper’s Razzmatazz liqueur, a tasty red, raspberry flavored liqueur, on the bottom. Layered on top of the cordial is Midori, a sweet, bright green colored liqueur made by Suntory. The melon liqueur is enhanced by premium Japanese musk melons and explodes with fresh flavor. Add a splash of sweet and sour. Last, but not least, is a float of Jägermeister and its 56 herbs and spices. No garnish needed. Complements an order of Big Shots wings, a hearty burger, or ask for the filling New Yorker Dog by name.

AIMEE @ THE COCK & BULL How long have you been a bartender? I've been specifically a bartender for about threeand-a-half months (give or take), but I have been in the service industry for 8 years. Signature drink? I'd say that there is a tie between two. My favorite drink to make (courtesy of Beth who works with me at The Cock and Bull) would be the White Witch. First and foremost, it is super delicious, but what makes me want to claim it as “mine” is that my wonderful coworkers claim the shot is named after me, or sometimes simply rename the shot to “An Aimee.” They love me. Really! The other drink that I fondly hold in my heart would be the Bloody Mary. My coworker/manager Jeff and I compete in making the best version of the Bloody Mary for a couple of our regulars. I win every time! Trust me on that. Don't ask Jeff. Best tip you ever got: The best tip I've ever received was $150 on a $25 tab. A man and his son came up to LSU to tour the campus and stopped into the restaurant where I was working at the time. I spent some time giving them information about LSU: How it was pretty much the best school ever, and how much fun the guy would have if he chose it as his school. We talked; we laughed; I may or may not have invited them to a party (They declined!); and he left me that tip in cash thanking me for the best
afternoon they’ve had touring campuses and making them feel so welcome. In five words or less, how would your friends describe you? Is that five words total, or five descriptive words!? Uhh, if it’s five words total, go with “Crazy, but we’ll keep her.” Five descriptive words might be: Crazy. Fun. Caring. Tired... Crazy? What do you love about bartending: My favorite part of this job is meeting new people. I love making a complete stranger feel like they’ve been a regular at the bar for years. I love making someone who’s had a bad day laugh, or getting someone to try and fall in love with a new beer. I just really like to talk. - Continued on Page 43

RAILEAN RUN: Continued from Page 51 Yes! Enjoy a Railean cocktail! “New liquor laws went into effect on September 1, 2013, which now allows us to sell cocktails made with Railean spirits, and allows us to sell 2 bottles per person within a 30-day period,” said Railean. “We worked very hard along with many other distillers in Texas to facilitate these changes to our liquor laws. In addition to the new sales laws at the distillery, we are able to sell our spirits direct to other manufacturers (rum cake companies, ice cream companies, candy companies, etc.) so that they may be able to use a locally made spirit in the products that they make.” In this upcoming year, Railean is expanding the distillery and building a 3600-square-foot facility at their current location. Half of the new building will house a visitor center, rum museum, and greatly expand the Buccaneer Bar and Gift Shop. The other 1800-square-feet will be used for barrel storage and the relocation of and expanded bottling line. “We are currently working on a RAILEAN Whiskey that we hope to release in 2014,” said Railean. Don’t delay in making a tour appointment to see the working distillery and taste the homegrown spirits. View Railean’s ad in this month’s edition for the tour schedule or visit www.railean.com. Group tours are available during the week, call or email for information and to book a group tour. They are also available for special events and parties. Call or email for more information. Please note, visitors must be 21 years or older with valid ID to enter the distillery.

Holiday In The Park - League City
Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Like so many of you, I am looking forward to the New Year with its promise of opportunities. But before we do, let’s run down a quick list of some of the great live music we took in right before the end of 2013. HOLIDAY IN THE PARK: In years past, I’ve covered the annual Dickens on The Strand down in Galveston for it's throwback magic into a day from yesteryear. This year, we wised up and had to go no further than right here in our own back yard at the League City Holiday In The Park with a charm every bit as good and perhaps even better as it was all about our neighbors, community, schools, getting together to enjoy the Sea-
son. The annual parade scores as possibly the largest parade in the area and the showtime magic genuine — which in my book — ranks as best. A “Well Done” and “Let’s Do This Again Next Year!” mention goes to League City and all who were a part of making this annual event perfectly fitting for the Season. Cheers! THE COCK & BULL: I’ve been tracking the action at the weekly Open Mic hosted by Revak and the great staff at The Cock & Bull British Pub and happy to report this as one solid midweek outing. Musicians and music lovers from across town and around the world have gotten word of this Open Mic at The Cock & Bull event and are coming out to partake of the friendly atmosphere, delightful stage, great food, super service, and fine spirits. - Continued on Page 45

Local RAILEAN Spirits Revolution
RUM is leading the American
By Rhonda Meredith Begin the New Year in high spirits! Visit the Eagle Point Distillery, located at 341 5th Street in sunny San Leon, and tour the facility where RAILEAN® Handcrafted American Rum™, the first and only rum certified "MADE in USA" is manufactured. The intimate tours are guided by founder and Master Distiller Kelly Railean who recounts the company’s beginnings and how she journeyed into the distilling business. A snapshot of the company’s history begins in 2005 when Railean Distillers, LLC, was established. The following year, the company constructed the first and only distillery in the Houston/Galveston vicinity. In 2007, they manufactured small batches of specialty, handcrafted rum utilizing Grade-A, unsulfured molasses in state-of-the-art distillery equipment. RAILEAN® White Rum Ultra Premium, Reserve XO Ultra Premium, and Small Cask Single Barrel are all created with unique recipes and are personally tasted by Railean. El Perico, a 100% Blue Agave Sprit, was successfully launched in 2010, and quickly became yet another customer favorite. In 2012, RAILEAN® Handcrafted American Rum™ became the first and only rum certified "MADE in USA" in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission requirements under federal law. Qualifying for the MADE in USA CERTIFIED® / USAC™ Seal signifies that a manufactured product has gone through a rigorous auditing and certification process to confirm that the product was manufactured in the United States of America, using U.S. labor, and that each component of the product was manufactured in the U.S. Currently, Railean produces RAILEAN White Rum, RAILEAN Reserve XO, RAILEAN Small Cask, and RAILEAN Spiced Rum, RAILEAN "El Perico" 100% Blue Agave Silver, and RAILEAN "El Perico" 100% Blue Agave Reposado, and has recently released RAILEAN Vodka.

During the tour, Railean also offers a detailed look at the distillation process from start to finish. Learn how to make RAILEAN rum, agave spirits, and vodka. Partake in a discussion on fermentation, distillation theory and operation of the still, dark versus white rum, spirits distilled from agave (including a discussion on Tequila), the rum and vodka making process, barrel aging, and bottling. The hour-long tour will definitely open your eyes to the work, tender loving care, and countless hours that are put into literally handcrafting each bottle. Enjoy the tour’s end with a tasting of each type of RAILEAN spirit in a keepsake souvenir shot glass. If you do not wish to take a tour, you may also come out to the Railean Buccaneer Bar and Gift Shop to purchase bottles of Railean spirits and merchandise (hats, aprons, sweatshirts, mini-barrels, T-shirts, shot glasses, and other miscellaneous merchandise), and/or enjoy a Railean cocktail. - Continued on Page 48

SCENE Songwriter Spotlight:
GABY VERAY By Rhonda Meredith Mayagüez is a city on the west coast of Puerto Rico and almost 2,000 miles from the Bay Area. The trip takes a little longer when stops are made in Florida and North Carolina, but how does the saying go? When someone wasn't born in Texas, they get here as fast as they can?
Friday, Jan. 10
Yeah, Gaby Veray’s story is something like that…
JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
Rapture
Veray was raised in Mayagüez within a large, close-knit family. He was involved in sports and big time into fishing tournaments with his dad and brothers. Around 12 years old, one of his older brothers who was in a high school band bought Veray a Guitar Player magazine. Interested, Veray picked up tabs from that. The self-taught musician certainly had an ear for music, but he didn’t share his creativity in front of many people. But he did expand his horizons and traveled back and forth from Puerto Rico to various states staying with family. In 1997, Veray graduated high school in Orlando, Florida. Then in 2003, he worked as a dental technician and was a self-professed “lab guy” for about a year-and-a-half. But it wasn’t really what he wanted to do. Veray had heard good things about North Carolina, so he moved, got an apartment, and worked retail, as he earned a degree in film and graphic design.
Spazmatics Friday, Jan. 17 SCOUT BAR
In 2010, Veray ached for a new direction on the heels of a personal tragedy. Once again, he just picked up and moved. This time, it was Texas calling his name. Unfortunately, life wasn’t cooperating as easily as before. Veray wanted to continue working in film and graphic design, but it was slow. He had to downsize. He had to simplify his life. He had to self-reflect and learn a few things about himself. He realized a new direction was in order. “It wasn’t an easy time,” said Veray. “But, pain got me to music. And music got me through it.” He began attending local open mic nights and met the group Mama Tried at Cabo in Seabrook. “The music bug fully bit me at that point,” Veray said. Nowadays, the mid-30s musician performs alongside violin player Tina Fuller or with the Gaby Veray Trio made up of Veray and band mates Jason "JBone" White and Blake Plsek. The trio started around a campfire and is reminiscent of Spanish reggae with a faint twist of bluegrass. - Continued on Page 33
