Cheers to T-Bone Tom’s! Here’s To Another 40 Years! By Rhonda Meredith
Mark Your Calendars
For the past 40 years, T-Bone Tom’s has served up hearty portions of home-style food, steak entrees, seafood dishes, and world-class barbeque plates with a friendly, down-home smile. “We start fresh every morning and begin serving at 11 a.m.,” said Anna Kennedy, longtime general manager.
It’s back at T-Bone Tom’s: The third Wednesday of the month features “Pirates and Poets” with host Jerry Diaz from Hannah’s Reef. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with prime rib and shrimp and musical entertainment from Southbound. On March 1, the “Mardi Pardi” starts right after the Kemah Mardi Gras parade with Luther and the Healers performing from 1 to 5 p.m. The Navigators take the stage from 7 to 11 p.m.
T-Bone Tom’s, located at 707 Highway 146 in Kemah, originally opened as a neighborhood meat market in the late ’60s. It expanded into a full service restaurant in 1974. The early traditions set forth back then still carry on today. Everything is still made from scratch. The unique flavors from the dry seasoning and barbeque sauce are from original recipes. TBone Tom’s still makes their own smoked sausage and hand cut their steaks. Side items like potato salad and cole slaw are prepared fresh daily. T-Bone Tom’s is one of the Bay Area’s treasures, no doubt, and it garnered national attention in November 2009 when a certain platinum, spiky-haired chef came to town. Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives host Guy Fieri was on hand to enjoy what the locals have savored for decades. Customer favorites include the homemade sausage and Armadillo Eggs (barbeque brisket stuffed in a pickled jalapeño, battered and fried, served with a side of ranch dressing). Of course, there is more to the menu. The weekday lunch specials individually feature chicken fried steak, beef tips and noodles, smothered pork chops, southern fried chicken, and
southern fried catfish. The weeknight dinner specials include hamburger steak, an 8-ounce prime rib, fried or grilled pork chops, all-you-can-eat ribs, and sirloin and shrimp. There are a wide variety of choices that are sure to please everyone. Call 281334-2133 to place a to-go order. Value packs and catering are also available. Adjacent to the main restaurant is an outside seating area under multiple palapas structures called “Tom’s Backyard.” It’s a perfect place to enjoy gatherings, plus drinks like the Painkiller (a tropical flavored adult beverage made with Cruzan dark rum) and live music. Tom’s Backyard has two fully stocked bars and friendly bartenders. The Land Shark stage hosts single acts and duos on Friday and Saturday nights in February from 7 to 11 p.m. A few of the names scheduled this month are Shane Barnhill, Justin Van Sant and Sheila Marshall. In March, and just in time for Spring Break, live music will return six times a week. Food, fun, and a festive atmosphere all describe what’s in store for all who visit T-Bone Tom’s. Head down to Kemah and look for the red roof and the ever-present cow just south of the Kemah Bridge. For more information, visit www.tbonetoms.com.

By Kelley Dawson From Nevada casinos to premier Florida art galleries and even a quaint gallery in Alaska, Annette Clark’s art is truly nationwide.
Clark earned a Masters in Art from the University of Nevada with undergraduate degrees in Art and Psychology. She also attended the University of Miami and the University of Washington as well as Lamar University in Beaumont. Clark’s many job titles include art teacher, graphic designer, art therapist, and art restoration technician. Her art is as varied and colorful as her travels and education. Clark’s works include oil paintings of countless styles and subjects and sculptures created from wood, Plexiglass and bronze. According to Clark, each place she has resided has influenced her art style and the subject matter. She said she loved living in Nevada and instantly became fascinated with the gaming industry. She added that her art series then took on a gambling and racing theme. Several Reno and Las Vegas casinos commissioned Clark’s creations. Many of these works combined nongambling themes with subtle gaming symbols illustrating Clark’s cleverness. Following her time in Nevada, Clark joined her father in Alaska to work as a subcontractor on the Trans-Alaska pipeline. Clark stated most people find the experience of 60-degrees-below-zero temperatures hard to believe. But, she said it incorporated a whole “new dimension” into the art she produced while living and working there. Clark

next settled in Seattle, originally to study art therapy at the University of Washington; however, she then purchased a farm and began breeding and selling Thoroughbred horses. “It’s no surprise what my art became at that point,” Clark said. She used oils to paint horses and also created majestic equine sculptures from bronze. Clark’s paintings embody her intense appeal to and knowledge of her subject. Her use of shading and unique color choices make her subjects captivating; yet almost haunting as the images remain after gazing upon them. Clark moved to the Bay Area in 1991. Her art studio is located in Kemah. Clark’s most recent pieces reflect the scenery of the Gulf Coast and the Bay Area lifestyle. Some of Clark’s paintings are currently on display at The Cock and Bull British Pub on NASA Road 1 in Seabrook. She will have a gallery showing in May at the Butler Longhorn Museum in League City. By Peggy “Domino” Taylor The Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast has exciting artistic endeavors planned for the New Year, including the addition of classes, new featured artists from the Bay Area and beyond, and fun, family friendly evening events such as poetry readings, book signings and a monthly movie night. For those who enjoy art but need something a little more affordable than an original painting, a new retail section will be added soon with items that can be purchased such as art prints, greeting cards, jewelry, pottery and more.
The Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast always welcomes new artist and patron members. For information about classes, membership and events at the Art Consortium please call Rebecca Collins at 281-942-9275 or email your questions to info@artconsortium.org

For kids, a summer art camp is in the works. Children will have the opportunity to spend part of their summer break engaging in arts and crafts at 2nd St. Gallery both inside the classroom, and outside in the gallery’s outdoor space. The Consortium also plans to host Farpoint Theater’s summer workshops and summer production. In September The Consortium will be a partner in the 16th Annual Gulf Coast Film Festival. GIO’S FLYING PIZZA • Continued From Page 10 In addition to pizza, Gio’s serves some amazing Italian specialties — both on and off the menu. Popular items on the menu include the Chicken Gio’s (a grilled chicken breast topped with gravy and mushrooms, butter, marsala wine, and provolone), the Luca Brazi (grilled salmon topped with artichokes, capers and lemon sauce, served with sautéed veggies), the Porcini Ravioli (stuffed with porcini mushrooms, sautéed with olive oil, zucchini, squash, red bell pepper, sundried tomatoes and basil, topped with feta), or the Tilapia Bianco (seasoned and grilled, then topped with a butter, garlic and white wine sauce and shrimp, served with a side of capellini with garlic and basil, and sautéed veggies). Off the menu, you can find some unique specials, not often found at a pizza place. The Pork Valdostana features provolone stuffed, grilled pork ribeye in a Valdostana gravy with mushrooms and artichokes, with a side of veggies and potatoes; head over for a rib eye steak, seasoned and grilled to order, with rosemary potatoes and sautéed veggies; or try the Salmon Pescatore, served in a sherry cream sauce, with shrimp, tomatoes and olive oil, served on capellini pasta, with sautéed veggies. For a high-quality lunch at a reasonable price, including some of the specials listed above, Gio’s is definitely a good choice. Or you can try something simpler; like the San Gerrero, a traditional Lower East Side-style sausage and peppers tossed in a basil marinara and served over penne pasta. Stay for happy hour with $4.99 appetizer specials, $2.99 house wine and premium drafts, and $1.99 domestic pints. The great thing about a pizza place is that they typically deliver. Gio’s takes it a step further and delivers their entire menu — specials and all — within a 6-mile radius. Gio’s is located at 650 FM 517 W. in Dickinson and open Monday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

CHANGE IT UP: CHALLENGE YOUR MIND, CHALLENGE YOUR BODY Happy February from Meatheads Fitness! So you've braved the gym with its heavy populations in January, you've kept your sanity while changing your eating habits for whatever your new year's goals are, and all for what? Now the progress is slowing down or may have even stopped!? You, my friend, have adapted to your program. Adaptation is good as a survival tactic, but not very helpful when you want to fit into smaller pants. When you've adapted to an exercise, your body has become more efficient at performing it. From a fat loss or strength gain standpoint, that's not helping you continue to progress towards those goals you've set. The key to continuing to see results in any fitness program
is change. Physical adaptation occurs between three and six weeks of repetition, so you’ll need frequent program changes to remain successful. Changing your program could be as simple as adding more weight to your exercises, or as complex as changing your approach entirely, i.e., from yoga to Pilates. More moderate options are: using different exercises or taking the exercises you already use and increasing the neurological demand of performing them. Increasing neurological challenge is fancy talk for making your body work harder to do the same work. Different ways to do this are: using different sized dumbbells for each side, or using a stability or BOSU ball. Another fun way to in-
crease neurological demand is to remove visual input. That's right; close your eyes! When you change your sensory input during an exercise, it’s a whole Fitness Columnist new ballgame to your Rick Hunter brain. Try this at home: stand on one foot and touch the toes of that foot. Now try it again with your eyes closed. Huge difference there, eh? Little changes in any program can help you blast through a plateau in your progress. If you find that you have difficulty making changes to your program, perhaps seeking the help of a fitness professional is what you need. Keep working on those goals and GET IN THE GYM!

LYC’s Barnett/Fraser team capture Ft. Lauderdale/Key West Race Lakewood Yacht Club racers John Barnett and Cran Fraser with daughter and recent LSU graduate Sophie captured the first place trophy for the multihull division in the 160 mile race from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to Key West. They raced on Don Balthaser’s Cantina 58’ catamaran with Barnett as the skipper while Fraser was the watch captain. With 35 boats participating on Tues., Jan. 14, the race, according to Barnett, experienced rough and windy conditions due to two fronts passing through the Atlantic Ocean. With large, close waves and recorded winds up to 38 knots, there

were many sail changes along with the breakage of the spinnaker halyard at the first turning mark. “This race turned into a navigation nightmare maneuvering around lobster pots and numerous mooring buoys with major anchor lines,” related Barnett. “In addition, if there is any damage done to a reef, Florida’s new reef laws could cost a boat owner over a million dollars.” A full time navigator and helmsmen are required to watch for depths going from 170’ to 10’ in four boat lengths while trying to avoid the 2 kt. head Their boat reached the finish line in a little over 21 ½ hours, earning them the first place award. Barnett also captured the navigator trophy this year. Although the Lakewood team of Barnett and Fraser have raced this venue many times, this is the first time they have won it.

BIG BREW: Cont. From 42 Mayor Annise Parker was on hand for the announcement at the GRB. “A destination event like Big Brew spotlights Houston’s role as a leader in the craft beer industry,” Mayor Parker said. “We look forward to welcoming craft beer lovers to Houston this fall.” Offerings for the week-long event include VIP experiences, pub crawls, craft beer dinners, food and beer pairings, beer education seminars, intimate meetand-greet opportunities, a Best in Texas event focused on Texas offerings only and two grand tasting sessions. The festival is sponsored by Spec’s Wine, Spirits
and Finer Foods. “Spec’s is thrilled to be a part of this citywide craft beer event,” said Lisa Rydman, third generation Spec’s family. “We’ve long focused on making available hard-to-find craft beers, especially those produced in Texas, and on providing products and craft beer education for enthusiasts as well as those just joining the craft beer movement. It’s an exciting time for the craft beer industry.” Excitement for events like Big Brew is growing. “Part of our long-term strategy for growth downtown is to develop events that generate business for hotels and restaurants,” said Dawn Ullrich, presi-
dent and CEO of Houston First Corporation, which operates the GRB. “Looking at the success that other cities have had with craft beer events, we believe Big Brew will be a home run for Houston, especially in light of the fact that Texas is the third fastest growing state for the number of small, independently owned craft breweries,” Ullrich said. Big Brew benefits the University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College, a leader in hospitality education. Tickets for Big Brew go on sale on February 17 and start at $45. For events, tickets and all things Big Brew visit www.bigbrewhouston.com.

CULLEN’S FIFTH ANNIVERSARY BARREL ARRIVES FROM KNOB CREEK Knob Creek Tasting Party & Happy Hour: Wed., February 12 • 5-7 p.m As part of its commitment to offer the finest selection of premium spirits in Houston, Cullen’s American Grille has acquired a remarkable barrel of Knob Creek single barrel reserve Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. The Cullen’s Fifth Anniversary Barrel, personally selected by Cullen’s General Manger Ryan Roberts, commemorates the restaurant’s first five years of successful operation. The latest addition to the over 350 varieties of whiskey offered at Cullen’s comes from a barrel chosen by Roberts during a visit to the Knob Creek distillery in Kentucky. Thanks to a long-standing relationship with Jim Beam (the makers of Knob Creek), Roberts arranged for Fred Noe (Jim Beam’s grandson and a respected bourbon authority) to set aside a number of exceptional barrels for his inspection. “I was able to taste from 26 barrels,” Roberts explains. “Since most people like a sweeter bourbon, I chose the barrel with bourbon that was the sweetest and had the most character.” Once Roberts decided which barrel would be served at Cullen’s, the bourbon was bottled with a custom label designating it as Cullen’s Fifth Anniversary Barrel and bearing Fred Noe’s signature. The barrel contains 120 proof Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey which has been aged 9 years in new American white oak barrels charred over an open fire to produce a bold, complex flavor. One barrel of bourbon produces 25 cases of six 750 ml. bottles. “It’s been a great success so far,” Roberts reports, noting that Cullen’s sold over a case of the Fifth Anniversary Barrel in its first week of availability. “We’ve always done well with bourbon,” Roberts says. “We already had an impressive selection, but decided to expand. There is a renewed interest in bourbon, and we wanted our customers to be able to try more styles at an af-

fordable price. Now we have one of the largest selections of bourbon in the city, if not the state.” “Cullen’s is committed to bourbon,” Roberts says. “It’s America’s spirit. Bourbon is accessible, it’s fun, and there are tons of great products out there. Bourbon is hot right now, and we don’t expect that to change.” During the Knob Creek Tasting Party and Happy Hour on Wednesday, February 12 from 5-7 p.m., guests will have the chance to sample this exclusive Knob Creek single barrel, along with other Knob Creek products, while enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres. This event is open to the public at no charge, and will take place in Cullen’s newly renovated and impressive bar and lounge. Cullen’s has recently added whiskey tasting flights to its menu, enabling customers to sample a variety of choices from the restaurant’s stock of premium spirits. The flights, which offer three one-ounce pours, start at only $15 and allow guests to assemble a custom selection of whiskeys. “Super Premium” flights are also available, featuring small-production, small-allocation offerings. “More limited items are coming in all the time,” Roberts explains, noting that “Cullen’s has access to special allocations due to our relationships with producers. Distillers want their products to go to good homes, places where they are appreciated.”

“BEER RADIO” takes over Houston Airways If you need any more proof that craft beer is gaining significant traction in Houston, look no further than your radio dial. While still practically impossible to tune into any station for long without being subjected to multiple ads for one of the big three mass produced lite beer brands, craft beer now has a voice on our airwaves with not one, but two local talk shows that discuss craft beer and the people who brew it. This month, Jon Denman and Preston Brown of Drink of Ages are celebrating the popular show’s first anniversary with a huge beer and music festival on Sunday, February 16 at the House of Blues.
Jon Denman & Preston Brown Along with the focus on craft beer and other alcoholic beverages, each episode of “Drink of Ages” features a band or performer and Denman admits he is having a blast. “There was nothing like it in Houston, and as far as the content of the show, featuring local music artist as well as discussing craft beer, spirits and homebrewing, DRiNK Of AGES WhAT’S ON TAP nothing like it News FM 92.1 KPRC 950AM in the country,” 7-8pm Saturdays 3pm Sundays explained Den- Hosts: Jon Denman Hosts: James Simpson man. “We had & Chris Spradley & Preston Brown never been in front of a mic before starting the show other than some karaoke, but beer and music are two things I really enjoy and isn’t that hard to talk about. The idea came to me, and I pitched it. Now a year later, the show has passed all expectations. We have made great friends, drunk great beer and are about to host our one-year anniversary party at House of Blues. I never imagined it would have taken off so fast. Apparently people like listening to people drink and talk about beer and music!” Indeed they do.
Introducing BIG BREW Destination Craft Beer Event for Houston
Big Brew, a week-long celebration of craft beer at the George R. Brown Convention Center, was announced last month by Food & Vine Time Productions, Inc. and Houston First Corporation, which operates the convention center. Big Brew kicks off October 20, 2014 with events around the city, followed by larger events October 23-26 at the GRB. Designed for beer lovers in Houston and across the nation, participants will enjoy more than 1,000 featured beers, meet the best and brightest brewers in the craft beer industry, and quench their thirst on never-before-tasted brews and rare finds. - Continued on Page 38
Also bringing a love of the craft beer community and culture to the Houston airwaves are the “Beer Guru” James Simpson and his sidekick Chris Spradley via “What’s on Tap Radio.” Simpson is no stranger to talking beer on the Radio with his previous show, The Beer Page. Spradley recently filmed a pilot for a his reality show “Breweries, Bars and Beer Food.” They will air a special episode on Sunday, Februrary 9 remembering the late Ash Rowell of Duff Distributing and the huge impact he had on our local craft beer scene. Both shows are an asset to our craft beer community and hosted by guys you’d love to drink a brew or two with.

Now Radio Springs is performing “a mix of rock, bluegrass, singer/songwriter and jam” music at venues from Galveston to Houston in front of enthusiastic crowds. “We take a lot of pride in what we play,” said Elliott. “It’s what we do. We know people use their hard-earned money to come see us, and we want to make each show unique as possible and change it up.” The past six months have been long and busy for Radio Springs and “more than a blessing,” according to Elliott. Currently, Radio Springs is excited to be recording an EP at Big Door Studios. At press time, the EP is said to contain seven handpicked songs and is tentatively set to be released this spring with a limited run on vinyl to support local record stores. Included on the EP is a song titled “Walking In The Shadow” that was performed once during an open mic night and the response included a standing ovation. “It’s haunting,” said Elliott. He notes that the recording process is inspiring – and if it’s not, then something is wrong. He also teases that two or three of the other songs will have that “freight train” feel – once again, musically speaking, of course. Radio Springs’ dynamic sound, musical ability and improvisa-

tion serves them well when performing song covers. A favorite cover is “Bird In The House” by Railroad Earth. Elliott isn’t one to boast, but he did say Railroad Earth sent an email to say Radio Springs’ version was fantastic! The band also performs a “Sweet Medley” which features “Your Time is Gonna Come” by Led Zeppelin and “Can’t You See” by The Marshall Tucker Band. Radio Springs aspires to be a breath of fresh air in modern music. In 2014, they want to broaden their fan base in the Bay Area and enjoy performing at regional festivals. Visit the band’s ReverbNation page (www.reverbnation.com/radiosprings) to preview a song and see why they are ranked No. 1 in Houston. The voters got this one right as they were refreshingly inventive, cleverly crisp and had a creative excitement worth watching. I'm going to keep an eye out on Vanilla Sugar and suggest you give them a try yourself. BALLADEERS - One of the beauties of local live music is getting to see how local artists survive the test of time, playing over the span of decades, continually searching for fun challenging gigs and expanding their musical coverage. This month, we caught exactly that at Mainly Drinks with The Moon Dog Duet of David Hargraves and Daniel Douglass. Throughout the evening, the duo entertained patrons of this prior century corner drugstore that has been transformed into the perfect place for folks to gather, visit, dine, partake of one crazy large wine rack and enjoy live music. These guys have a playlist that easily spans more decades than anybody in the area and plays a unique interpretation that you'll rarely hear played more than twice the same way. Joining the Duet that evening was Janet Z making for one fine evening. In other developments, Hargraves has joined Dan Palook (of the former NADS) and the Big Palooka Band hammering out classics from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, and we caught this mix at the Seagull in January. We are good giving
John Brown and playing a very tasty assortment of folk style originals. Sonically pure and catching, I’m for the moment hard pressed thinking which of our many SCENE venues would be best suited for this group - an outdoor folk festival at Walter Hall Park comes to mind. Hopefully, more on this group in the months ahead. IT'S A WRAP - Football is behind us, the Rockets are looking good, and pitchers and catchers report to camp soon. Just like live music, when you think you've seen and heard it all, what was old and stale comes back reinvented with a freshness making it all new again. I won't predict how well our Astros will do this year and will keep my fingers crossed for our Rockets, but I can say for certain that our live music scene continues to reinvent and delight wherever the place may be. And with that, we wish all you a similar delight in living during the months ahead and being the part in a place we call The SCENE. Cheers!

Open Mic @ Scotty's Pub
NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - And that would be at Scotty's Pub at Scarsdale & Beamer Road. The locals tell us the food at Scotty's is their specialty and keeps the regulars coming to this cavernous neighborhood hangout. We caught a family affair of musical sorts at Scotty's Open Mic Night and a pleasing disOpen Mic @ play of natural raw musical Scotty's Pub talent from the next generation of Emersons & Dunlaps. Chatting with Scotty, live music was not amongst his initial priorities, instead being sure to take care of the regular patrons when he took the place over. Perhaps over time this might change as the listening room here is amongst the largest in the area. We'll keep an eye on this place to see how Vanilla Sugar @ Scout Bar things shake out.
this month to Mark Lum and the Guru Crew at check out Mark Scout Bar Lum and one of his new groups, The Guru Crew, with Rick Recckio and Noe Molina (bass and drums). Local music followers are well familiar with Molina and Recckio (who by the way played an incredible show despite a heavily splinted ring finger). The show on this Galactic Coast night was an incredibly strong throw down of classic garage band favorites mixed with originals coming off with the force and sonic ecstasy like a tube amp with fresh 6L6's in the sockets. Music Guardian, Roland Belmarez, describes Lum accurately following a recent recording session as a "1 Hitter Quitter Bad to the Bone!!!" Couldn't have said it better, these guys are good!

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC
Any New Song – Chris J. Hardy “My favorite song to perform live is whatever my newest song released is,” said Chris Hardy. “Nothing like debuting a new song and feeling those raw emotions on stage for the first time.” He explains, “When a song is new, it’s current to your emotional state, and you are able to recreate those feelings more accurately and makes the song more believable. It can be difficult to enjoy playing a song for the 200th time, so that first time is golden.” Hardy is currently practicing with the long awaited new band “Hardy & Co.” and is preparing for their first concert dates this spring.
“Sold Down River” – Six Gun Sound “Without a doubt our favorite song to play live is Sold Down River,” said Six Gun Sound’s drummer Vinnie Territo. “It kicks things off great and rocks so hard we just get lost in it. It’s a song I would’ve jammed with on my drums as a kid to just get off. It’s just that kind of song,” Six Gun Sound is excited to be releasing a three-song EP very soon.
“Love Story” – Hold Fast Fables Marc Borde of Hold Fast Fables offers a disclaimer that each member of the band may have a different favorite song, but he says his personal favorite song to perform live is Love Story. “It is a sorrowful tune filled with emotion and tells a tale of love found and then lost,” said Borde. “For me it actually applies to personal experiences with falling in love as well as going through a divorce involving a child. It has brought tears to the eyes of our audiences at concerts and our recent recording captures the feelings associated with the song perfectly.” The band has just wrapped up recording their first studio album Cat-O-Nine Tales and the mixing process should be complete in a few months. Love Story will be on the CD and Borde says, “There will be happy songs on the album as well.” THE SCENE

“Tell Me Something” – Chad Ware Band “My favorite original song to perform is “Tell Me Something,” which is also the title of my first CD. I like to play it because it’s upbeat, and I love the guitar parts. It isn't the best song lyrically that I’ve written, but I think it represents my sound more than any other song, and it is fun to play,” said Chad Ware. He is currently working on his second CD and hopes for a summer release.

“Vampire” – The Last Hour “Vampire is one of our favorite songs to play live because of the way we play it live,” said Brett Cardiff, bass player for The Last Hour. “It's different than on the CD. We start it off with just Travis Comer on the stage singing and strumming on his guitar until right before the solo with the whole band coming in to give this eruption of sound and emotion.” The Last Hour is a part of a Bay Area Turning Point benefit show on February 22 for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault at Scout Bar. FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC “Write It Off” – Fox & Cats Josh Willems, guitar and vocals Fox & Cats, says the energy when performing Write it Off “really gets the crowd, as well as us moving.” Willems, along with Nicole Wigginton (drums) make up the rock duo of Fox & Cats. The band has shows in the Bay Area coming up in February, including headlining the Texas Buzz at SCOUT BAR on Sunday, February 16. Fox & Cats also has plans to begin working on their next album over the next couple of months.
“Better Than Nothing” – Radio Springs “Our original song Better Than Nothing is the first song we wrote as a band,” said Matt Elliott, guitar and vocals for Radio Springs. “Every time we play it, we surprise ourselves, and the song is being recorded on our EP right now.” Read more about Radio Springs in this issue of The SCENE Magazine.
“Love Bites” – ERASETHEVIRUS "Love bites is a very sexual song,” said Chris Navasatis, frontman and ERASETHEVIRUS founder. “Yes, it has that vampire theme (I was really into the True Blood HBO series when writing the lyrics) that some would find cheesy, but like I always say, ‘If you don’t like it, I know your girlfriend WILL!' It's our 'panty dropper' song.” Hear the song for yourself when ERASETHEVIRUS headlines at SCOUT BAR on Friday, February 21. - Continued on Page 53
FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC “BumpsterFunk” – Cassette Tape Do not adjust your eyes. You read the song title right. This 13-minute song has only one lyric, “We are all just a figment of our own imagination forced into a vision by our overactive minds, so leave this world behind and open up your mind…” It’s a statement, not a question; so there is no need for an answer. Just go with the psychedelic and reggae flow. “This song is about the flow of energy,” said Matt Cash, lead guitar and vocals of Cassette Tape. “The energy we give flows out from the stage and into the crowd and they give it back.” Cassette Tape is mid-way through recording a self-titled EP. The release party is March 8 at House of Blues. Then the band will be gearing up for a regional Spring Break tour and a busy summer of gigs.
“On Transition” – Jeremy Kilgore “This song is about the topic of change, and the things we go through in life,” said Jeremy Kilgore. “Such as break-ups, divorce, all the troubles and hardships we go through, and how we overcome them.” The song title On Transition is also the name of Kilgore’s five-song EP out now. Music to Kilgore is “another language, something I can understand. It’s an emotion, a way of life, and something I am passionate about. I could play every day and never get tired of it.” “Currently our favorite song to play live is One Request,” said Jacob Kitchen, vocalist of the rock band Soul In Tension. “The song just has a great live feel to it and seems to get the crowd going.” Kitchen also gives insight to one song in particular that Soul In Tension hopes to be a new single. “It tells a story about being on the on “One Request” – Soul In Tensi road in a band, temptation, conKRISTINA MORALES PHOTOGRAPHY sequence, and the personal battles we have in our minds.” The band has been working some new material lately and hope to release a new album by the end of the year. “We are truly grateful to have such amazing fans and we can't wait to bring them some new music this year.”

SUSIE @ ASPENS BAR & GRILL Sweet experience: “I have bartended off and on for around five years and have been at Aspens since the day they opened the doors last summer.” What do you love about working at Aspens? My favorite thing about working at Aspens would have to be meeting new people – especially those who have become great friends. Signature drink and a special Valentine’s Day drink: “I really do not have a signature drink to make except my favorite to drink. A Long Island with added peach! Yummy! And a Chocolate Covered Cherry is an awesome VDay shot!” I say Valentine’s Day, you say... “CHOCOLATE!” Favorite candy? “My absolute favorite candy is Ferrero Rocher! Love ’em!” Romantic at heart? Best romantic movie? “Unfortunately, I am not a romantic at heart, and what I consider a romantic movie is good ol’ Urban Cowboy! Hahaha! ... Actually The Notebook is a winner!” Best Valentine’s gift you have received? Worst? “The best Valentine’s gift that I cherish to this day is a Mothers Ring. Unusual, I know, but my favorite. The worst would be, well, nothing... I had an ex who forgot Valentine’s a time or two... Hence, the ex!” Valentine’s crush in a parallel universe? “As far as crushes go, a special someone has my heart. But in a parallel universe, it would be Ian Somerholder from Vampire Diaries!” What do you do when not at work? “When I’m not working, most of my time is spent with my kids. I do get the occasional time out with
friends, but not much. I love to hit the gym and do a little kickboxing as much as possible.” Mardi Gras! What would your krewe name be? I definitely attend Mardi Gras in Galveston. I have not attended in New Orleans, but really hope to get the opportunity. My krewe would be the “Krewe of Aspens Angels” made up of all of us girls. I mean, Aspens is what it’s all about right?!” February is Literary Lovers Month. What’s your favorite book? “I love any book by Dean Kootz, and I absolutely love Fifty Shades Of Grey!” February is also Snack Food Month. What’s your favorite snack food? “I am addicted to Valero’s chocolate chip cookies. They are the best, and I eat them just about daily.”

Local Musicians You Love Share Which Original Songs They Love “He took his pain and turned it into something beautiful. Into something that people connect to. And that’s what good music does. It speaks to you. It changes you.” - Hannah Harrington, author of Saving June
Vinnie Territo, Six Gun Sound Travis Comer, The Last hour
The quotes are endless about the power of music and its ability to penetrate through a crowd of one or one thousand. Music has an expressive power that many have experienced. A song can be stuck re-playing in the mind, carried in the heart, or even as deep as the soul. Lyrics can take one back to a specific time or release one to move forward. Local songwriters shared with us their favorite original songs to perform live. These are the songs they love – and we think you will, too! … For there is nothing like the love of music.
“Birmingham” & “Texas Tequila Night” – Southbound
Marc Borde & Claire Sieverman, hold fast fables
“Two of our most recent song favorites to perform are Birmingham and Texas Tequila Night!” said Steve Johnson. He and Jimmy John make up the tropical rock band Southbound. Birmingham is a catchy tune that tells the story of when Steve and Shirley (Steve’s wife) met and Texas Tequila Night was co-written with their good friend Rose Anderson. Southbound has started 2014 with a bang playing at venues such as T-Bone Tom’s and the Kemah Boardwalk. They are working on their third CD. - Continued on Page 55

SCENE Songwriter Spotlight:
RADIO SPRINGS By Rhonda Meredith Being hit by a freight train feels pretty good – Musically speaking, that is… Local musicians Matt Elliott, Ryan Harbuck, and Austin Haynes are Radio Springs, a “slamgrass” band with harmonies.
Spazmatics Friday, Feb. 14 SCOUT BAR
And the trio has a powerful sound. “It seems as though there are a lot more people on stage,” said Elliott (vocals, acoustic guitar). “We surprise the crowd with how loud we can sound.” Elliott and Harbuck (mandolin, vocals, bass guitar) Photos: Andy Eng, SCENE have been friends since the ninth grade and were in a blues band while in high school. They met Haynes (guitar, vocals) at their regular weekly open mic appearance in Friendswood. Haynes asked to jam with the duo, and they all bonded while jamming to a Jimi Hendrix song. To make a short story shorter: What used to be billed as “Matt & Ryan” became “Matt & Ryan & Austin.” You could say, they clicked – and fast.
Fox & Cats Sun., Feb 16 SCOUT BAR
That was a mere six months ago. It was just weeks later that the trio received a call from local singer/songwriter Chris J. Hardy offering them a spot at Scout Bar and encouraged the guys to come up with a band name. “We came up with a name in less than an hour,” said Elliott. “Radio Springs has an organic feel to it, and the name stuck. We liked it.” - Continued on Page 45
