pring has officially reached the Galactic Coast, which means lots of sun, inviting water and plenty of opportunities to get out of the house and capitalize on all our dynamic, waterfront paradise has to offer. This month the GOT GALACTIC GEAR? Galactic Coast Sailing team returns to the water to defend its 2013 J-24 Class Championship in the Wednesday Night Sailboat Races on Clear Lake. And the Galactic Coast sponsored Gritty Goddess obstacle course team returns to Galveston Island on April 26. March was another record-setting sales month for GCB, and we plan to continue that growth. As a result, we are selling Galactic Coast Brewing gear for the first time ever to raise money targeted to allow us to get closer to meeting demand with supply of Galveston County’s oldest brewery. NOAH’S ARK BAR & GRILL

GREAT FOOD & BEAUTIFUL VIEWS ON THE BAY By Rhonda Meredith Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill has a casual and friendly atmosphere. Everyone is welcome to 4438 Boulevard in Bacliff seven days a week. The restaurant serves up tasty signature items that are sure to please. Customer favorites include the “Hot Mermaids” appetizer (shrimp wrapped in bacon and a jalapeño pepper, dipped in beer batter, and deep fried), the “Noah’s Burger” (a two-third pound patty, two pieces of bacon, two pieces of Swiss cheese, sautéed onions, and grilled jalapeños on the side) and the “Hawg Burger” (a one-pound patty with two slices of bacon, Swiss and American cheese). All of their burgers are made with Angus beef and flame-broiled. In addition to po-boys, wraps, subs, and baskets, the kitchen also offers a popular fried meatloaf sandwich.

A Day To Celebrate Music, Art & Mother Nature THE HERB CAFÉ & MARKET EARTH DAY FESTIVAL • APRIL 19 By Rhonda Meredith The Herb Café and Market, located at 5828 FM 517 East in Dickinson, will host an Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 19 beginning around noon until 8 p.m. Founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, Earth Day is traditionally commemorated on April 22. “I grew up celebrating Earth Day with family and neighbors,” said The Herb Café owner Adam Folden. The event brought people in his small town community closer, and he hopes to bring the same to Dickinson and the surrounding areas. The one-day celebration will focus on the merits of mindful, sustainable living while educating and encouraging guests to do their part to conserve and preserve the Earth. The event will feature a Master Gardener onsite to give tips and encourage the planting of trees, flowers, and herbs.

Being environmentally conscious is an everyday practice at the Herb Café. “All of our dishes are from scratch using the freshest ingredients available, many of which are derived from our very own, on-site garden,” said Folden. The Herb Café grows garden fresh herbs like garlic, basil, rosemary, and mint to name a few. “And we make an effort to not throw out much and will compost, recycle, refurbish, and re-purpose to accomplish this.” It was in July 2012, that Folden began the journey of creating an eatery that wasn’t exclusive, but rather, inclusive to all in the community and opened The Herb Café and Market. “We have a little bit for everyone,” he said. “It’s all good. The Herb Café is not bound by any one type of cuisine.”

Even the simple act of planting a tree is huge and helps the environment tremendously. Did you know an average size tree absorbs carbon dioxide and creates sufficient oxygen in one year to provide oxygen for a family of four? Planting flowers is such a simple act and adds beauty to your corner of the world. They support bees and butterflies and give off oxygen and they take in carbon dioxide, too. The concept is “clean air gardening.”

Take one look at the menu and that sentiment is confirmed. Whichever you choose, you are surely going to taste a difference.

The festival will showcase the talent of local artisans, a tie-dye designer, jewelry makers, artist (including henna and sideshow), crafters, face painting, a cedar wood plant box maker, and even a glass blowing demonstration. Browse The Herb Café’s market section and appreciate the local wines, honey, and other cool items for purchase. Enjoy the Woodstock feel with live acoustic music beginning at noon from Jordan Tydings, of local reggae rock band Thread-

belly, from noon to 3 p.m. Next up is reggae rock band Alvin & The Slickpunks from 3 to 6 p.m., followed by the good musical vibes of Trill Labo & The Lost Boys from 6 to 8 p.m.

In additional to the rotating daily lunch specials, The Herb Café and Market offers a Friday Night Steak Night each week, a Saturday Brunch between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. with $2 Mimosas, and a four-course wine dinner on the last Thursday of the month. A farmer’s market is held on the second Saturday of each month and showcases locally grown produce, arts, and crafts. The Herb Café and Market is open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 281-337-4080 to place a pickup or delivery order or even an optional reservation. NEW NASSAU BAY ART WALK TO FEATURE COASTAL ARTISTS SC

EN

E

ARTS

A new art walk is in our area and the first one was held on March 15 and with great success. The Nassau Bay Art Walk and Wine Celebration endured rainy weather but the turnout was constant and art lovers where there to see all the new creative art work that had not been seen before in our area. The sec-

Changes on Park Avenue brings changes for local residents Big changes are coming to Park Avenue, but it is likely no one will notice as they drive by the old red, brick building adjacent to the League City Masonic Lodge. The changes will come to those who enter. Dion McInnis, long-time associate vice president at University of Houston-Clear Lake who retires at the end of April, will be turning 114 Park Avenue into a place of change; changes for individuals who find themselves through his photography, find voice in his writing workshops, find encouragement and focus in his “Motivated Monday” programs, and find the ability to see and express through these photography and writing workshops.

ond Nassau Bay Art Walk will be held April 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will continue every third Saturday. The Nassau Bay Art Walk extends from Upper Bay Gallery at 18069 Upper Bay Road through to the opening of Kelly's Studio and Gallery at 2045 Space Park Drive. The exhibits will feature Kelly Halbach, Leona Pleasant, Robin Collins, Lauran English, Jimmy Phillips, Eleanor Suss and other local artists. The works include paintings, jewelry, sculpture, pottery, photography and other unique creations by more than 20 top local artists. Complimentary wine will be served at the four locations that are featured in the walk; Upper Bay Gallery, Dog Tales and Kelly's Studio and Gallery. For more information on The Nassau Bay Art Walk or for individual showings, call Kelly Halbach at 281-543-0083. See you there!

- Peggy “Domino” Taylor

“I have been teaching photography, conducting workshops for writers and photographers, and offering presentations on communications, leadership and more for years,” he said. “I have certainly been busy with the job at UHCL for the past twelve years and the outside programs that I had, but it has always been important to me to help others find their voices, selfimage and their gifts. Now, I will be even more committed to helping others,” he said. McInnis is not new to celebrating people in the Bay Area. He volunteered his time and talent to interview and photograph 50 people who were key to the development of the area from the perspective of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. The project of bios and portraits turned into a book and exhibition titled “50: Years, Stories, Faces.” “It makes sense that the building’s transformation will involve communications; visual and written, and groups. The building was originally owned by GTE to house switches, and then it was transferred to the Masonic Lodge so it could be used for meetings. It seems like this old building was destined to be used for creating photos, stories and memories, as well as providing a venue for groups to learn. Being across from the city park and being part of Historic League City are icing on the cake,” McInnis said. “The building has always been about connecting people in one way or another,” McInnis said, “and I intend to honor that history in my own way.” For more information, contact Dion McInnis at 832-877-8821 or dion@dionmcinnis.com.

Featured Artist: Judy Boh

For local ceramic artist Judy Boh, nature definitely played a role in developing her interest in pottery and her successful art career. After serving in the Peace Corps in Tunisia, Boh moved to Wisconsin. There she said she needed a diversion from the snow and took an art class. Boh stated she realized she wasn’t good at painting and tried ceramics. “I fell in love with it,” she said. Boh told that her professor was amazed by her instant talent. Boh then moved to Texas. She studied at the University of Houston Clear Lake where she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Boh shared her passion for pottery by teaching at the College of the Mainland and Pearland College Center of Alvin Community College. She also served five years as curator for The Art Alliance Center at Clear Lake. Boh continues to nurture her creative spirit forged from nature. She molds and sculpts beautiful, unique works for gardens, home décor and even functional table-wares such as bowls, plates and serving dishes. Boh shared, “I prefer building from a [clay] slab rather than a wheel.” She said the process allows her to be less confined and more creative. “I can alter a piece and have more freedom to create,” she added. Boh customizes many of her pieces with carvings of fish or floral and fauna. Many of her carvings and subjects are inspired by her extensive travels. Boh travelled throughout North Africa, Europe and Turkey. She once lived on a boat in the Caribbean for six months. Boh said, “I picked up lots of symbolism just from travelling.” She especially likes African mosaics and Islamic symbols including fish. Boh’s works extend beyond the medium of clay. She also creates ornate paper mache sculptures and some drawings with watercolor and washes. Her paper mache art is deceivingly good. Due to her raku-like washes and brilliant paints, the molded paper looks more like pottery. Currently, Boh finds her art therapeutic. She said, “Art and my daughter are reasons for living.” According to Boh, her daughter, Jacinda Blossman shares her creative passion and is also a talented artist. Boh stated, “She’s my biggest critic and inspiration.” For commissions and details of her upcoming Spring Sale at her Clear Lake Shores studio, contact Judy Boh at 281-334-3673.

Your ACTION GUIDE Get out and do something! Now! • Be Active!

SCENE (sen) Noun.

The place where an action or event occurs.

Maximize your workout for efficient movements Awesome April, my Meaty Minions! This month I’m going to point y'all toward goalappropriate workouts. Often people believe attendance is all that's necessary to get to a fitness goal, but you'll find that's not quite the case. If you don't have a plan in place that's conducive to making the appropriate physiological change, you may be working against that goal! One of the most common workout goals is to reduce body fat. You may state it differently, be it “lean out, drop weight, get toned” they all mean the same thing. Reducing body fat to increase muscular definition. The best approach for this is to work with a moderate intensity, meaning slow tempo, high repetition and set counts, minimum rest. Keeping your lifts at a tempo of 2 seconds up, hold one second, two seconds lower will keep you on pace. Making sure your rest period is no longer than 30 seconds is a good idea also. The rule of thumb for fat loss rest periods is DON’T! Try not to rest much at all. After all its a work out, not a rest out! This mentality helps to keep your heart rate up, which will make you burn more calories, since you will be moving more and pushing more oxygen through your body. The idea of repetition and set counts really translates to time under tension for the

muscles.. Ideally for a fat loss goal you'll want to use 12-15 reps and 3-4 sets with the 2/1/2 tempo mentioned earlier. This translates to a lot of time under moderate intensity and stress, which will further translate into a lot of calories burned! Keeping this pace will also increase what's called EPOC (Excessive Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption). We refer to EPOC as the afterburn. Your body is catching up to the exertion you just performed and is trying rapidly to replace the cellular energy you just depleted. During this phase you will burn calories very quickly, which is exactly what you want for this workout style. Fat is a storage medium for extra calories. If you ingest more than you can use at one time, you'll store the rest. For a fat loss goal you want to be as inefficient with your calorie expenditure as possible so that you'll go to fat stores to replace what you've just burned off. For a mass gain routine you want to be as efficient with your calorie burning as possible. Mass gain goals, again worded differently as per the person stating the goal is all about getting the most bang for your buck out of the calories you've eaten. In the gym you'll want to wear the muscle out as quickly as possible so that your body will feel the need to repair and rebuild the muscle bigger and stronger for the next time

you try something like that. Heavier intensity, faster tempo and lower reps and sets are the key to a good mass/muscle gain program.

Fitness Columnist

Rick Hunter Tempo for mass gain should run closer to 2/0/1. Two seconds lift, no hold, one second lower. Rest times are more moderate, usually in the 60 second range, since you don't want to hit oxygen debt (get out of breath) when working to grow. Repetitions and sets are ideally in the 8-12 reps, 5 set range with heavier weights. Use these stats to point yourself towards success in your goals, and remember to GET IN THE GYM! ----------------------------------

Friends are invited to attend the event, cheer us on and stop by our tailgating tent for well wishes and conversations. Here are just some of the reasons our team is excited to participate: Lauren Rene' Farley: “I am excited because I love dirt and hanging out with lovely awesome ladies. So, I think it will be fun1” Jane Head: “It is the ultimate adventure: Silliness, girl time, exercise, liquid sustenance, mayhem, and mud!!!” Laurie Dahse: “I love to party gritty style with ladies from all walks of life. Susan Sireno: “I'm excited to participate because this is my first ever Gritty Goddess, and I'm ready to get down and dirty with some fabulous friends and lovely ladies!” Brandi Pascavage: “I am very excited to be returning to one of my favorite 5K events, and look forward to all the fun we will have! This year is very special to me, because I am walking in memory of Anita Rodriguez (the mother of my dear friend Lee Rodriguez). Anita passed away in January 2012. April 26 (race day) was her birthday, and I am honored to be dedicating my participation in her name.

GRITTY GODDESS Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run returns to Moody Gardens, April 26 On Saturday, April 26, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women, and women only, who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5K(3.1-mile-) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course,” says Event Director Claire Jordan, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” For the April event, there will be lots of new surprises, including the “Cliff Hanger” obstacle and even more mud. Another new addition is the “Gritty Guys Drag Race” at 1:30 p.m., which allows men to do the Gritty Goddess course, but only if they are dressed in drag. It’s guaranteed to provide the ladies with some extra entertainment! The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive so participants can complete the course at their own pace and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individ-

ual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will start every 10 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae and a complimentary beer. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon, and the “GLOW GODDESS” after-party on Saturday evening, with DJ Hexum and glow necklaces for everyone. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun,” says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” Although the minimum age to participate is 14 years old, the last two waves of the Gritty Goddess at 12:50 p.m and 1 p.m. allow girls aged 8 to 13 to participate in the full 5K with their mothers, older sisters, or female guardians as part of the Goddess + Nymph Challenge. Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1K obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, ages 6 to 13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.”

HEALD BANK REGATTA • APRIL 26-27 Lakewood Yacht Club Heald Bank Race Chairman David Comeaux has announced that this year’s Heald Bank Regatta has been scheduled for the weekend of April 26-27. This is the first race of a series to determine the winner of the Texas Offshore Racing Circuit (TORC). The second event is an offshore regatta hosted by Houston Yacht Club while the final event is the Galveston Bay Cruising Association’s (GBCA) Texas Race Week. At the conclusion of Race Week, the prestigious Texas Navy Cup will be awarded to the TORC spinnaker champion using PHRF with spinnaker handicapping. The S. Rhoads Fisher Trophy was established last year as a new perpetual trophy for the TORC non-spinnaker championship using PHRF handicapping. This year, 2014 marks the 51st anniversary of the TORC which was founded in 1963. The Heald Bank Regatta, which is open to the public, is held offshore in the Gulf of Mexico starting at the Galveston jetties, marker 11. The race begins on Sat. afternoon with most boats finishing early on Sun. Morning. In addition to the PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes, boats may enter in cruising fleets or in a multihull fleet. Cruising class boats will receive a handicap assigned by the race committee and are not required to provide a PHRF certificate. Multihull boats will need to have a handicap certificate issued by the

Texas Offshore Multihull Association (TOMA). All spinnaker boats will sail a triangle course of approximately 90 nautical miles while the non-spinnaker boats will sail a two leg course of approximately 60 nautical miles. “This should be a fun night of racing offshore of Galveston,” related Comeaux. “It is also a good warm up for the longer distance races held later on in the Gulf such as the Emerald Coast Regatta (co-sponsored by GBCA and the Pensacola Yacht Club) May 2330, and our popular Harvest Moon Regatta coming up Oct. 9-12,” he added. Race Sponsorship Chair Andrea Todaro reports that sponsors making this race possible are the City of Seabrook, Hays Insurance, Banks Sails, Sea Lake Yachts, OJ’s Marine and Little Yacht Sales. There is a Skippers Meeting on Friday, April 25, 7:30 p.m. in the Chart Room of Lakewood Yacht Club, 2425 NASA Parkway in Seabrook. Trophies for this race will be presented during the Shoe Regatta Awards Ceremony which will be held the evening of Sunday, May 18. To register for the Heald Bank Regatta, please go to Lakewood’s website at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com and follow the “Regattas” link. Or, for questions, one can call the club’s office at 281-474-2511.

LAKEWOOD RACERS SWEEP BAY CUP I CLASS Lakewood racers swept the PHRF Spinnaker B class by winning first, second, third and fourth places at the Bay Cup I Regatta held last month on Galveston Bay. Forty seven boats in six classes completed the regatta in what some considered ideal racing conditions. Lakewood racers accepted their trophies at the awards ceremony held in the club’s lounge the evening of March 1. First place in the PHRF Spinnaker B class was Steve Rhyne on “Mojo,” second went to Al Goethe on “Hamburg,” third went to David Christensen on “Airborne” and fourth was won by Uzi Ozeri on “Infinity.” For the first time, Lakewood Yacht Club youth sailors raced their own boat in Bay Cup. Coming in 4th place in PHRF Spinnaker A class on “Blackburn Marine” were Dane and brother Doug Byerly, Howdy Hughes, and Collin Scoville. “We are very proud of these young racers who had the courage to get out there and race against all the adult, more experienced sailors,” related Bay Cup I Regatta Chairman Gerhard Wittich. Other Lakewood Yacht Club winners were Jay Zittrer on “Banjo Girl” in the Cruising Non-Spinnaker Classic Canvas B,

Revel in the CRAFT BEER REVOLUTION American Craft Beer Week: Monday, May 12 – Sunday, May 18, 2014 WHAT: For the ninth consecutive year, the Brewers Association has declared American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) a celebration of U.S. craft brewers. From May 12–May 18, beer lovers everywhere will celebrate the craft beer revolution via hundreds of events that showcase the innovative and economic contributions of today’s small and independent brewers. Across all 50 states, craft breweries, brewpubs and retail partners, will host exclusive brewery tours, special beer releases, multi-course pairing dinners, collaboration beers, retail promotions and much more. WHEN: Monday, May 12 – Sunday, May 18, 2014 WHERE: Stay tuned to The SCENE on Facebook and make sure to check out next month’s issue for a list of venues hosting events and promotions during American Craft Beer Week. You can also visit the official American Craft Beer Week events calendar, hosted by CraftBeer.com, for a full — and growing — list of local celebrations in all 50 states. WHY: With more than 2,700 craft breweries and hundreds more popping up across the country every year, the observance of ACBW is more relevant than ever. It’s a time to both honor and celebrate the art and tradition of small brewers. ACBW gives beer beginners, beer enthusiasts and beer geeks in all 50 states the chance to share the renaissance of flavorful, appealing, world-class craft beer produced by American small businesses — the backbone of this country. For the last three years, ACBW was celebrated by breweries, brewpubs and retailers in all 50 states. Last year, more than 55,000 beer lovers were part of the Facebook community and the hashtag #ACBW was used more than 26,000 times in the month leading up to and during the week. With the continued interest in and growing popularity of craft beer, this year’s event is expected to be bigger and better than ever before.

New to the Top 50 list is Sixpoint Brewery out of Brooklyn, New York. great to get back to Topwater Grill in full party mode with live music. Kudo's to Robert and his staff for hosting this blowout event and cheers to all who came out for the fun!

Folks, this little band had been one well-kept secret in the world of hot garage bands, and I’m actually shocked that I haven't heard them before. Able to pull off the plate of SRV and Hendricks with fluidic ease and tasteful interpretation, I can say Hardcastle Deluxe is SCENE Party Ready. Book 'em! The second band that day wasn't a surprise to us but a match that was meant to happen with the South- Hardcastle Deluxe @ Topwater Grill bound duo of Steve & Jimmy appearing at Topwater for the first time. Judging at the packed crowd having fun and hearing the sound properly tuned for the huge palapa-covered party floor, one would think that this band has been playing at Topwater for some time. Let's keep our fingers crossed. It was

IT'S A WRAP - Okay, I'll confess: My March Madness Bracket has me sitting down toward the bottom, the Astros have me thinking about taking up my golf game again, and the Texan's first draft pick should be traded (IMO) for two top picks next year. Winter has lingered waaaaay too long and crawfish are costing too much BUT it delights me to no end to report that local live music, no matter the genre, no matter the venue, is better than it's ever been in quality, clarity, energy and smiles. New material is popping up everywhere and the performances by the bands are playing out stronger and as confident than ever which in no small part due to the appreciation I'm seeing by the audience (you folks) having a good time with friends and family, being yourselves, being alive, and being a part of The SCENE. Happy April, and we'll see you out there!

Hourglass @ Cock-Eyed Seagull

Pretty powerful is the pleasant voice & pretty cool, eh? Heads up, the annual Hourglass 60's party is coming up soon. As a black light lit event, this has been a photographer's nightmare but always still a heck of a lot of fun. Keep an eye for this one.

songs to acclimate to the up close & personal experience at Scout Bar (and probably why they keep coming back). I've witnessed time and time again how after perhaps three songs, touring bands bond with the up close audience's appreciation and energy before suddenly trancing into a frenzy and taking off, the likes they hadn't experience since their days before big time fame and body surfers arriving on stage. Makes sense? The show cooked... Tour Stop Clear Lake, Scout Bar, get close...

The REVOLVER HOTTEST CHICKS IN HARD ROCK TOUR - Okay... I'm a guy, and I'll fess, with a banner like that, how Sick Puppies @ Scout Bar

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN - For me on the scene is a bit blurred, but Topwater Grill was prevalent and the place where Gene Rutt plugged me into "the SCENE" with the likes of the Cow Blues Brothers, Andy & The Dreamsicles, Hart Fest. The place got clobbered during Ike along with the rest of Southbound @ Topwater Grill the area and with utmost respect and appreciation, watched Robert and his team rebuild the Topwater Grill into what it was on St. Patrick's Day weekend 2014, a place for folks to hang out, enjoy good food & spirits *and* host a couple hot live music bands. The first one was totally new for me, Hardcastle Deluxe.

could I resist. Featuring SICK PUPPIES, LACUNA COIL, Eyes Set to Kill, Cilver, & Vanilla Sugar, Tour Stop Clear Lake (aka Scout Bar) has clearly taken it up a level coupling the area's premiere lighting and sound system Sick Puppies @ Scout Bar with their newly remodeled indoor layout conducive not only to up close and personal packed in front of the stage yet with space to decompress, enjoy a craft brew, and mingle with friends. Used to be, we would say why bother heading all the way up to the Woodlands. Now, we can say "why bother going downtown?" The show you ask? I'm of the belief that it takes the larger internationally touring bands a couple

LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 49 KATIE'S - We've been reporting the cool, intimate, music friendly set up at Katie's for awhile and were curious how the play would fare with a packed stage. And so when we spotted Funksion on the calendar at our favorite Bacliff Music Hall, we dropped in to check it out. Packed house Check; Packed stage - Check; Packed dance floor - Check; Great service, sound and fun Check, check, check.... The music was on top, crisp and sharp all night long with Freddie and the boys tightly in the groove. Mike Laurent was high flying, waving in the ripping turnarounds and breaks with authority. Funksion is clearly hitting on all cylinders and ready for the 2014 party season. Book 'em!

Pee Wee Bowen @ T-Bone Tom's A musician all her life and thanks to the encouragement of the local musical community, Myrna has taken the step out into the public having only performed live for six months and should be interesting to keep up with over the years. Readers will recall prior write-ups by SCENE writer Rhonda Meredith on Gaby Veray. Perhaps the only thing I can add to her mention is how well the group sounds on stage live which I reckon due to their opening jam, was a great time to get the board dialed in just right. Cameo appearances later in the evening by Matt Cash and Marc Borde further qualified the evening at Zone 504.... A great place to be! Also in the Lighthouse District, we dropped in to catch a Pee Wee Bowen set at T-Bone Tom's. I think I've figured out why TBone's is always so crowded, and that's because with their food, service, craft beer and live music line up, nobody leaves! <vbgrin>

BACK ON THE BEAT - Which would be down in the Lighthouse District at Zone 504, where every year we get older & wiser, but the folks at Zone 504 stay forever young and fun. The great 504 staff Gaby took care of the thirsty Veray @ crowds as always and Zone this evening, we 504 caught up with Gaby Veray's band along with a newcomer to the music scene, Myrna Garibay opening the night. I asked Myrna if she was related to the other local musical forces by the name of Garibay and there were none that we could report.

BACK ON THE BEAT PART II - Which would be Pirate Radio with the return of Erik Garza at Dempsey's in March. With a voice well rested and as strong as ever, Erik and the entire band sounded even more solid as I've ever heard them if that's possible. This is going to spoil lots of live music lovers out there and enjoy it next time you can...

Myrna Garibay @ Zone 504

Pirate Radio @ Dempsey's HOURGLASS UNPLUGGED - What better way to kick back and enjoy an evening than to catch an unplugged Hourglass show at the Cock-eyed Seagull. A special treat this evening was getting to catch a few numbers by perhaps the smoothest voice happening in the area, Scooter Tyra. Radio personality, Lee Jolly (who has an award winning voice of his own) described a recent bar scene with the roughest of crowds only to become a tranquil easy listening setting with Scooter on stage.

song swapping the evening away much to the appreciation of the cozy audience. The way it should be! Also in March, the Cock & Bull hosted a night of comedy, which everybody definitely needs, myself included. Cock & Bull, a regular stop on our beat. Make it a part of yours, too!

March truthfully murdered my Madness bracket and thankfully on the flip side, was a mercifully massive monster month on the live music SCENE. We partook of the live music (and eats and drinks) at eight locations last month and on every front, were beyond delighted with the new tunes and great sound coming from our local live musicians. How did we choose our spots to check out? We found them in The SCENE Magazine, of course! Let's run down some of what went down in March...

HIT AFTER HIT AFTER HIT - So what's a band to do when their playlist is completely filled with the hits fans like? Madigan figured that one out. Keep adding Songwriters Night more hits to the list! We stopped in to @ Cock & Bull catch the Madigan show at Sherlock's (who provides the longest bar front per patron I believe) to hear the band serve out new hit after new hit, an utmost pleasant outing indeed. With keyboard player Michael McColloch and bass Wildman Jeremy Walton firmly in the groove with Melissa, Dave & Todd, Madigan still deals out the rock anthems we love and pulled out knockout punch after knockout punch that were new to these ears. Several things stood out including how these new songs explored new and refreshing genres, the range suited Melissa's voice perfectly *and* allowed the band to demonstrate four part harmonies(!!!) Songs were performed with perfectly precise and sizzling syncopation, and throughout were tonally pleasing (perhaps even more so than by the original artist), likely due in part to sound man, Dale, arguably the best in the business. Amongst the local acts, this band packs a show on the audio, visual and rock-yourbutt-off fun categories. Folks, I honestly got fully recharged at the Madigan show last month and if it's been awhile since you've caught them, make it a point to do so soon. Trust me!

SONGWRITERS NIGHT - Jeanette and the good people at The Cock & Bull has really been a great place to decompress and enjoy an evening of fine eats, great suds & spirits, and live music (they have a pretty good Sunday brunch, too!) This month, we spotted something new at The Cock & Bull, a Songwriters Night and dropped in to check it out. On stage that evening were Myrna Sanders, Sherita Perez & Wendy Elizabeth Jones

Pimm’s Cup: Life is too glorious not to experience the rose petal and cucumber infused flavor of Scotland’s own Hendricks gin. Especially when coupled with the dark, goldenbrown color of Pimm’s British liqueur, a medium bodied taste of dry gin, liqueur, fruit juices and spices. Pimm's was created in 1859 by the English oyster bar owner James Pimm. The recipe is still a secret, and legend says only six people know exactly how it is made. Add ginger ale, a lightly muddled cucumber, and garnish with a fresh wedge of the veggie as well. This light, refreshing drink is perfectly paired with any salad. Try the Aegean salad if you have a hard time choosing! Strawberry Basil Lemonade: This rosy colored drink is fashioned from Stolichnaya’s Stoli Strasberi, a #1 rated strawberry flavored vodka. It’s an intense flavor of strawberry jam, cream, nuts, and a background floral note and is made using an infusion process in which all-natural flavors are infused before filtration. Embrace the soft, fresh berry that is sugared and muddled in

SCENE -> LIVE MUSIC

Sheila Marshall at T-Bone Tom’s April 13 By Rhonda Meredith Texas Music Chart topper Sheila Marshall is performing her Texastinged country rock at T-Bone Tom’s, 707 Texas 146 in Kemah, on Sunday, April 13 at 6 p.m. Make plans now to attend the free show and enjoy the live music along with some tasty dishes that have been featured on the Food Network's acclaimed cable television show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Marshall has numerous accolades from being a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo performer to a “Top 10” finalist on TV’s Nashville Star talent show (singing with Willie Nelson) to most recently being a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. The East Texas native grew up in the town of Nacogdoches, has been steadily building and maintaining a strong fan base since she fronted a rock band while attending Stephen F. Austin State University. That’s when her love of old school country music merged with classic rock artists, such as Led Zeppelin, giving her voice more of a bluesy tint and even more soul. Marshall’s acoustic EP “Beautiful For Situation” earned her a national Budweiser sponsorship. Her first full-length CD “Makes Perfect Sense” had three singles rank on the Texas Music Chart, including the widely embraced single “Radio.” Matchbox 20 guitarist Kyle Cook produced Marshall’s next album, “What If I Was” after a colleague passed some of her songs to the rocker. “He liked my music, so we ended up meeting in Nashville and we just hit it off,” she said. Marshall landed two more singles (the title tune and “I Ain’t Yo Baby”) on the Texas Music Chart, and was invited to perform at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. For the longtime road warrior Marshall, that was one more stop in a list that includes appearances across Texas and throughout the states, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Europe and Japan. She’s also entertained U.S. troops in Iraq and Kuwait.

JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE

Where The Party Never Ends On Land Or On The Bay By Rhonda Meredith The original idea behind Jackie’s Brickhouse was to open a friendly, neighborhood bar that served brick oven pizza. The venue quickly turned into a point of destination in Kemah for food, games and entertainment for the entire family. Jackie’s Brickhouse new Kitchen Manager Matt Wev, inspired by the venue’s atmosphere, has expanded their menu to reflect a better variety and bigger portions made with fresher ingredients. Stop by and taste the newest specials and signature dishes that are created from scratch daily. Enjoy the Kemah Crawfish Special on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. priced at just $4.99 per pound and $1.50 “Big Ass Beer” specials are featured on Thursdays after 7 p.m. “So, when you’re tired of paying for parking, outrageous crawfish prices and over-priced beer, come to Jackie’s where the parking is free, the bugs are cheap and the beer is cold!” said General Manager John Barrera. Jackie’s Brickhouse hosts many of the biggest and hottest bands in the Houston area each week. Welcome Dan Kristensen (of Endless Summer) as he makes his first solo appearance on Sunday, April 6. Also performing for the first time are Raf Rivera (of The Hunger) on Wednesday, April 16, and local musician Ernie Trevino on Thursday, May 1. Mark your calendars now for the amazing Mambo Jazz Kings on April 12, a special performance by Hamilton Loomis on April 17, and party band extraordinaire Rat Ranch’s two-night event on April 24 and 25. Stop in on Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. to catch live acoustic music under the palapa. Check out Jackie’s Brickhouse’s ad in this issue of The SCENE for the full music schedule and expanded events. “There is literally SOMETHING for everyone at Jackie’s Brickhouse,” said Barrera. “We do not and will not forget

where we came from or the people who helped us get here. Jackie's Brickhouse is a fun, friendly, family owned business… where the party never ends.” In April, the party literally continues out into Galveston Bay. Join Jackie’s Brickhouse for their second annual Brickhouse Beauties on the Bay Fishing Tournament on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, for ladies only. Registration is due by Monday, April 21. Late registration is accepted until Thursday, April 24, but will require an additional fee. Register online at www.brickhousebeautiesonthebay.com. The check-in, Captain’s meeting, and social mixer will be held on April 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Jackie’s Brickhouse located at 1053 Marina Bay Drive (FM 2094) in Kemah with an on-site registration during the first hour. A silent auction will be going on during this time with all proceeds benefiting The Rose, a non-profit breast cancer organization located south of Houston. The Rose provides access to screening, diagnostics, and treatment services to any woman regardless of her ability to pay. Their mantra is “Every Woman Deserves Quality Breast Care.” Support this worthy cause dressed in your best team’s outfit as contest photos will be taken to determine semi-finalists for the “Best Team Outfit” award to be determined by the audience. - Continued on Page 51
