Sierra Nevada Corporation announces intent to land Dream Chaser at Ellington Airport’s proposed Houston Space Port In a joint news conference recently held at the Rice University Space Institute, Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and the Houston Airport System (HAS) announced plans to explore potential applications and multiple economic development opportunities presented by the combination of a Houston-based space port and SNC's Dream Chaser - a spacecraft that can land at the space port directly from low-Earth orbit. SNC, which already has a strong presence in the Clear Lake area, is developing an innovative, flexible and highly-capable crew transportation system for the 21st Century as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program. SNC and HAS have signed a letter of intent to work together to explore the possibilities associated with the proposed Houston Space Port including a wide range of educational, technological, scientific and business capacities. As part of the cooperative initiative, the organizations will study the physical, operational and regulatory requirements for SNC's commercial space vehicle, Dream Chaser, to utilize the space port as a landing site. This effort will contribute to defining a long-range strategy for the diversification and development of a vibrant commercial space industry in Texas, serving the needs of government, science, and commercial applications. "Houston has been a cornerstone of America's space program and remains vital for its future. Dream Chaser's ability to land on a commercial runway such as Ellington offers, for the first time, a realistic path for America's space program to return and be seen locally by the thousands of people who make space happen every day in Houston and give tribute to the generations that have made us the leaders in exploration," said Mark N. Sirangelo, corporate vice president and head of SNC's Space Systems. - Continued on Page 10
ELLINGTON AIRPORT pursuing nation’s ninth commercial SPACE PORT license Ellington Airport, located within 15 minutes of downtown Houston, is a joint-use facility handling both general aviation operations and flights involving the United States military, the Department of Homeland Security and NASA. Ellington Airport already supports more than 10,000 Houstonarea jobs and carries an annual economic impact of $641 million. That impact is set to become even stronger in the future, as the Houston Airport System moves forward in its drive to establish Ellington Airport as the ninth licensed spaceport in the United States. - Continued on Page 11

"With the unique combination of NASA, the local aerospace industry, many of whom are already partnered on our program and academic institutions such as Rice University, combined with the potential of a future space port, Houston's future in space commerce is a go." "Houston has unique advantages over other emerging spaceport locations with significant access to an existing, robust aerospace community," said City of Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz. "This letter of intent will allow us to effectively assess and define the new markets and applications that could emerge from having a Houston-based portal to space, which in turn will drive enterprise, economic growth and prosperity in this area." Meet The DREAM CHASER Dream Chaser provides the only reusable, human-rated lifting-body spacecraft with a commercial runway landing capability, anywhere in the world, and is on the forefront of the commercial human spaceflight industry, offering safe, reliable and cost-effective crew and critical cargo transportation to low-Earth orbit. Dream Chaser is a multi-mission capable spacecraft which has the ability to work as an independent science platform, or as a logistics vehicle to retrieve, move, assemble or deploy items in space. - John Ennis

SpaceX makes news on many fronts Spacecraft company announces Texas tops California, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico in contest for SPACE PORT Since it was founded by former PayPal entrepreneur A and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk in 2002, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) has racked up an impressive list of firsts, and that list continued to grow in late April when the company successfully “soft landed” a stage from its Falcon 9 rocket vertically in the ocean after its launching (picture B) into space during a third official cargo mission to the International Space Station with the Dragon Capsule (picture C) as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. This was the first test toward Musk’s vision for B dramatically decreasing the cost of spaceflight using reusable rockets and just another space and engineering milestone for SpaceX. SpaceX already is credited with the first privately funded, liquid-fueled rocket (Falcon 1) to reach orbit (Sept. 28, 2008); the first privately funded company to successfully launch (by Falcon 9), orbit and recover a spacecraft (Dragon) (Dec.9, 2010); the first private company to send a spacecraft (Dragon) to the International Space Station (May 25, 2012); and the first private company to send a satellite into geosynchronous orbit (Dec. 3, 2013).

But getting possibly more attention in April was Musk’s press conference comment (picture A) that C SpaceX will move forward with plans for a Space Port for vertical launches near Brownsville on the southern tip of Texas. This was a major win for Texas and marks a fourth potential Space Port in state joining efforts by commercial space companies XCOR in Midland and Blue Origin near Van Horn, along with the recently announced plans to build Space Port Houston locally at Ellington Airport. Musk and SpaceX also made news for filing in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims to force the United States Air Force to rescind a block agreement to buy 36 launches of the EELV launch vehicle from the United Launch Alliance, a competitor of SpaceX, until SpaceX is certified to launch national security payloads and can compete for the bid. - John Ennis

Could Ellington be the nation’s next space port? (Continued from Page 9)
With ample acreage available for business development, a strong cluster of aerospace companies already in the area and a robust transportation network, Ellington Airport has all the requirements necessary to establish a dynamic commercial spaceport. - John Ennis

CLAUDIO’S RESTAURANT:
An Unforgettable Italian Dining Experience, Live Music & Dancing By Rhonda Meredith Claudio’s Restaurant & Piano Bar located at 3202 Marina Bay Dr. in League City, offers an unforgettable Italian dining experience. Enjoy fine dining in a casual atmosphere with nightly piano bar and dancing. Namesake Claudio Sereni is a well-known entertainer in the Bay Area. Born in Rome, Italy, he was chosen to sing as “white voice” (Soprano) in the Sistine Chapel Choir, and constantly got the privilege of singing for the Pope for seven consecutive years. The Vatican paid for Sereni to attend music school at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome to study bassoon and voice. At 18 years old, he started his singing, acting, and dancing career. Sereni has also voiced over characters on the Italian version of many Walt Disney movies. He sang with the most popular singers and stars from all over the world, including Robert DiNiro (Once Upon a Time in America), Robin Williams (Popeye), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Red Sonja), and many more. Claudio and his Sereni says he originally came to fiancee Summer
America to visit his father, but loved America so much he decided not to return to Italy. He opened his own piano bar, Claudio’s Piano Bar in Kemah in April of 1996, and has been awarded "Best Entertainer" nine times. Just as passionate about food, as he is entertaining, Sereni has perfected his authentic Italian recipes over the years for a culinary experience like none other. He suggests the “Cioppino,” a classic seafood stew with a little bit of everything from the sea, or any of the fresh pasta dishes. Claudio’s makes their pasta (and breads) daily to ensure freshness. The “Tortellini alla Boscaiola” (handmade tortellini in cream white wine sauce with mushrooms, peas and Prosciutto), or the “Linguine ai Frutti di Mare” (hot spicy marinara sauce with calamari, shrimp, mussels, scallops and clams) both sound delicious. Chicken and veal entrees are on the menu, as well as a vegetarian dish. Or opt for a steak made to your desire. Keep in mind, on Tuesday nights; Claudio’s has a “Prime Rib Special” that is served with a baked potato, salad, and ravioli for $15.95. Sereni says their rotating chef specials are posted daily on their Facebook page, Claudio’s Restaurant & Piano Bar. Definitely save room for their signature dessert, the “White Chocolate Baby Grand Piano Tiramisu.” It’s made with a three layer sponge cake with tiramisu filling, whipped cream, coffee liquor, espresso, chocolate shavings, and cocoa on top. This decadent dessert is a must! - Continued on Page 21

Waiting along side a California highway after her friend’s van broke down, Priscilla Duffy never imagined such an event would leave her anything but stranded. Actually, she learned an entirely different form of stranded all together. A gypsy-like jewelry-maker happened to be selling his wares along the same stretch of highway. Duffy eyed a “cool” bracelet and inquired how much it cost. The gentleman told her fifteen dollars and then he offered to show her how to make it if she had the time. Duffy, still waiting for automotive assistance, felt she had all the time in the world. The stranger taught Duffy how to properly cut and bend wire and strand it with beads. He even gave her a small tackle box filled with an assortment of beads. He suggested Duffy get needle-nose pliers and wrap the tips in electrical tape in order to not damage the wire. She bought the pliers and started “playing and having fun.” Duffy added she’s been designing jewelry ever since. She first began making jewelry as gifts. Duffy stated she wore many of her own pieces and she drew “more and more interest.” While residing in New Orleans and after having children, Duffy decided to make and sell jewelry full time. She hosted home parties and cold-called local stores to offer consignment pieces. “I had a very good business,” said Duffy. After hurricane Katrina, Duffy and her family relocated to the Bay Area of Texas. Duffy shared that she had to create “completely different designs because of the bling and bigness of Texas.” She said her rodeo collection, which includes belt buckles and boot bracelets, incorporates the “everything is bigger in Texas” mindset and ‘lots of fun layering.” The Bay Area and sailing are also big inspirations for Duffy. She said she likes to include sea charms and shells and she’s “partial to the color blue.” In fact some of her favorite stones to create with are iolite and aqua marine. Most of Duffy’s pieces are made with sterling silver though she crafts from many metals and leather. Her jewelry combines varying elements and color schemes creating uniquely stunning pieces made from subtle sea pearls and glass to more hearty turquoise stones and big crystals. According to Duffy, she recently started a new design called a “Morse Code Necklace.” She explained it is a secret message made of bars and dots similar to what is used for Morse Code. Duffy further stated that the designs can be made from a favorite bible verse, nickname, love message or an important date or milestone event. For custom designs, including bridal or even jewelry repair visit www.pduffys.com or call 713.2520949. Her jewelry is also for sale at the Back Bay Boutique in Seabrook.

Your ACTION GUIDE Get out and do something! Now! • Be Active!
SCENE (sen) Noun.
The place where an action or event occurs.
Don’t derail, keep those six packs a-popping! Welcome to May, My Magnificent Meatheads! Now that the long winter is over, we can tell the Starks to shut up and get on our business of enjoying the warm weather! With the warmer days, come warm weather activities, probably the very reason most of us have hit the gym in the first place! You just have to look good at the beach, boat, barbecue or whatever your choice of activity is! During the fun spring/summer/fall months where it’s a tolerable temperature, we’ll dress accordingly. This means more chances to show off all your hard work in the gym! Don't derail all that sweat and toil now that you are in the game! It’s very easy to blow off the gym when there are other activities happening, but remember where you earned that chassis you're so proud of! Many people put on the weight they worked off after the holiday season, in the first month of warm weather, thanks to all the wonderful distractions available. To minimize the weight gain of the season, here are a couple tips to keep those six packs a-popping! Firstly, DRINK WATER! Keeping hy-
drated will allow your system to operate more efficiently. By the time you feel cotton-mouth-y, you are approximately a quart low on water. This will effect your mental acuFitness Columnist ity and slow your Rick Hunter metabolism by up to 7%. Water will also help flush out many of the impurities and keep you from retaining fluid found in the foods/drinks you’ll be consuming. Tired of your rings not fitting after a pound or two or five of crawfish? Get some water in, and it’ll reduce the amount you swell! Second tip is to keep as close to your fitness meal plan as possible. Frequent small meals will keep you from gorging later and covering up those hard-earned abs! If you plan to arm wrestle with your liver and knock back some adult beverages, consider eating a few snacks with more simple carbs, like fruit. Remember that alcohol pushes you into a hypoglycemic state (low blood sugar). This
will make you more prone to attacking any food nearby. The simple sugars in fruit will slow down this process and help keep you on track. Most importantly, don't skip the gym! Understandably, you'd rather spend the time you have out in the sun, but keeping up with your cardio and resistance training will keep those results you've busted your lovely lady humps for! Enjoy the season, but most importantly, GET IN THE GYM! -----------------------------Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. THE 21st ANNUAL
CLEAR LAKE GREEK FESTIVAL May 9, 10 & 11 at Landolt Pavillion, Clear Lake Park on NASA Pkwy
For twenty-one years, the Clear Lake Greek Festival has brought a touch of Greece straight to the Clear Lake area! Held in early May (usually Mother’s Day weekend), the annual event features authentic cuisine, live dancers, an outdoor kafenio, and plenty of family-friendly activities. The Clear Lake Greek Festival is St. John the Theologian’s largest fund raiser and all proceeds benefit the parish to fund upkeep of the church and the many ministries they provide. The festival is an opportunity to share Greek heritage with the Clear Lake area and the surrounding communities. There will be food and fun! At this event, visitors can enjoy delicious Greek cuisine and beverages, dance performances and unique Greek gifts. Best of all, guests get to hang out with some really great people! Last year, there were more than 3,000 visitors and more are anticipated this year! Don’t miss your chance to support a parish that has been a strong presence in the Clear Lake area for 21 years. Make sure to try the gyros, tyropitas (cheese pie), spanakopitas (spinach
pie), Greek rotisserie chicken, souvlaki skewers, loukoumades (fritters in honey and cinnamon) and baklava. There will also be other delicious Greek desserts, traditional Greek wine, non-stop music and dancing, exciting exhibition folk dancing and much more including rides and moonwalks in the children’s amusement area. There’s a happy hour on Friday, May 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. Greek beer and wine will be half price! OPA! General admission tickets are $3 for adults and FREE for children 12 and under. Lakewood’s Caliche Rum Shoe Regatta to set sail May 17-18 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Shoe Race Committee Chairman Dwight Bengtson announced that Caliche Puerto Rican Rum is the naming sponsor of the 32nd Annual Shoe Race. To be held over the weekend of May 17-18, Lakewood hosted the first Shoe Regatta in 1982 which was originally sponsored by Foley’s Department Store and Sperry TopSider Shoes. Bay Access, a not-for-profit organization that supports amateur racing, is the organizing authority of the race. The Regatta, which is open to the public and raced on Galveston Bay, is a favorite among local racers because, in the past, each crew member of the winning boat in each class was awarded a certificate for a pair of Sperry deck shoes; hence the name of the Regatta. In conjunction with the Caliche Rum Shoe Regatta, Lakewood will hold a Texas Regional Qualifier event for the J/70 World Championships for 2014. “It is an honor for Lakewood to be awarded this world-wide championship opportunity,” remarked member/racer Al Goethe who is chairman of the J/Fest Southwest Regatta this fall. The Shoe Regatta is for one-design, handicapped, and cruising sailboats over 20 feet in length and with a cabin. There will be three race courses to accommodate the One Design, PHRF Spinnaker, and Distance classes. The Skippers Meeting will be held on Friday, May 16, 7:30 pm in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook.
“We urge all skippers to attend this important gathering so that they can take full advantage of all aspects of this weekend regatta,” related Bengtson. The Saturday evening party will feature music by “Crossroads” and a dinner of Texas comfort food... chickenfried chicken. The Awards Ceremony is scheduled to follow the last race on Sunday, May 18, and will be held in the ballroom of Lakewood Yacht Club. Caliche rum will provide a new spinnaker to a winning boat. Winning crews will receive shoe coupons and skippers will get a bottle of Caliche Rum. Sponsors who make the Shoe Race possible include the following: the City of Seabrook, Sea Lake Yachts, Hays Insurance, OJ’s Marine, Banks Sails, West Marine, Volvo Penta, and Little Yacht Sales. Participants can register on line at www.lakewoodyachtclub.com. For questions, please contact Lakewood Yacht Club at lyc@lakewoodyachtclub.com or call the office at 281474-2511.
Galveston Bay Cruising Association’s 2014 Racing Season heats up With the summer season finally getting here, Galveston Bay Cruising Association (GBCA) starts its sailboat racing in earnest. The first race is the Conundrum Regatta on May 3. This is a SOS-TEX race (single or double handed). The Conundrum is a 20+ nautical mile course around three marks in any order the skipper chooses (the conundrum!). The next race is the Emerald Coast Regatta, a joint venture between Lakewood Yacht Club and GBCA taking place on May 23 and 24. The Emerald Coast Regatta is an offshore race to Pensacola, Florida. This should be a great race with an equally great party in Pensacola. With the start of summer is also the start of the GBCA Rum Races. These races start May 31 and conclude on September 13. There are a total of 8 races with winners for each race and overall winners at the end of the series. After each race is a party at the GBCA club house with Rum and all the fixin’s. The winter Icicle Series saw over 70 boats out racing.

JORDAN TYDINGS • Cont. From Page 51 This was a new day and a new path. He found his purpose in music, and it has been supporting him for two years now. Tydings says he is blessed to have the opportunity. Part of his drive comes from proving to the naysayers in his life and wishing to make his father proud. And just as important, the other part comes from the good vibe and message he passes to the audience and the feeling of getting it returned back. It’s not the attention, nor the lights. It’s the onstage zone he goes into while performing live. Those feelings drive this full-time musician to do what most people think of as a hobby. Thread Belly performs all over the Bay Area and surrounding Houston and Galveston areas. Tydings and Hector Porras (bass) are currently looking for a drummer with “a positive attitude, a drum kit (obviously), and lives in the Bay Area.” Tydings first CD is being produced, mixed, and mastered by Roland Belmarez. One of his original tunes "The Beach Song" will be released on the Will Play For Food III compilation disc on June 28. Tydings says he's a realist. He knows where his heart is and knows where he wants to be. His journey is well worth the effort. Like Thread Belly on Facebook and hear Tydings’ latest single “Melancholy Glad.” It’s about his perspective on current events in the world and in his personal life. Check out the band on ReverbNation and contact Tydings at jtydings86@gmail.com for booking information.

Our appreciation and thanks to A.D. whom over the years, has promoted local Texas live music. We wish him the best and hope to cross paths with him again down the road. As for Karah, local music guardian, Roland Belmarez (who's busy mixing and mastering CDs for the upcoming Will Play For Food event) tells me that she's "AWESOME!" When I asked him how and in what way, he smiled and said, "MAN, SHE'S SIMPLY AWESOME!" Getting the hint, we went back to watching the shows that night and wow, they were AWESOME! The sound and lights were on track all night long and the power and energy superb. That evening, we heard, Their Name Was Treason (a full-size band with dual power growlers), Downer (who finished early destroying their set in Keith Moon fashion) and Vanilla Sugar (who continually tests their potential each time we see them play). friends at this event and never ceased to be inspired with how these divas face the obstacles with that "uh-oh" look on their face, grind their way through, stop and help each other overcome, and celebrate at the end all while having good clean fun along the way (meaning they get very, very DIRTY). Seems very relevant in how all of us on the SCENE face challenges — helping each other and the celebrating and fun along the way. This is one reason I enjoy covering Gritty Goddess and being a part with all you readers out there in a place we call, The SCENE. All the best! We'll see you out there!
A QUICK WRAP which has little to do with our live music SCENE, but needs mention: the Gritty Goddess that just went down in April. Each year, we've seen many new faces and old
HARDY & CO. Continued from Page 55 "I've tried being a sinner, and I've tried being a saint,” said Hardy. “One thing I've found is you can’t have one without the other. This band allows me to be both, and we make same damn good music in the process! Hardy & Co. is all about making Texas music, which by definition is a mix of red dirt, rock, country, and blues that captures the essence of the Lone Star state. The SCENE Magazine sat in on a private rehearsal in their eclectic space in Alvin to exclusively hear the new sound. And if that rehearsal was any indication, this show is not to be missed! Hardy & Co. has been logging time at Big Door Studios to mix down their single “Turnaround Blues.” This single will be available free with entry on a compilation CD on Saturday, June 28 at the Will Play for Food III benefit concert. More details will be in The SCENE Magazine's June issue!

Last Hour @ Scout Bar good acts as we've got our reinvented Scout Bar. Word must have gotten out. We were at the Puddle of Mudd show and swear, the place was *packed* with new faces, very likely with many from the Woodlands. <vbgrin> Rules barred me from shooting the main attraction, but we were allowed to cover the opening local act, The Last Hour. The honor of opening for a national headliner has got to be a rush for our local groups, and The Last Hour took full advantage of it bringing out the fans and playing out of their skin that night. Very well done! In other Scout Bar news, the new sitting area is proving to be an excellent sports bar venue to catch the action and enjoy a fine craft beer with friends. Also, A.D. ‘60s Party @ Cockeyed Seagull with Hourglass FLASHING BACK FURTHER - To the '60s we went with Hourglass at the Cock-Eyed Seagull for their annual Hippie Party complete with black light posters, psychedelics, costume contest, music of the era and guest appearances by Joey Wainwright and Billy Gilbert. Lots of new people came out for this year's party which means to me that this is definitely a cool gig going. On a side note, we reported a few months back on Billy Gilbert's return to the stage after a 20+ year hiatus and are happy to report that he's reintroduced his popular Musical Chairs Band featuring different talent from the local area sitting in and performing. Decades ago, his venue was KPFT radio and these days, you can catch Billy's Musical Chairs show at a venue near you. One is never quite Abel @ sure who he will be playing Claudio’s with, but it's a sure bet that it'll be a good show! Book 'em!
told them to go for the eclectic slant, we had to check it out... Jazzy Steely Dan playing? Check. Relaxed casual dining and good company to chat with friends? Check. Linen table clothes and candle lit tables? Hmm.... Dunno.... This *is* Jackie's Brickhouse but with the atmosphere that evening, it *could* have been. Jackie's Brickhouse, 11th Hour unplugged, week night dining entertainment. I think these folks are onto something...
NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - That would be Claudio's. Lot's of familiar features greeted us there, the iced bar, the bubbling lights, murals by McClendon, and Abel Salazar on the stage. It's been a while since we've last enjoyed the musical offerings by this entertainment genius, and it was long overdue. 11th Hour @ Jackie’s Brickhouse ECLECTIC is a style often thought of at those inner loop hangouts, so when Rob and the folks at Jackie's Brickhouse brought in 11th Hour's Shane Anthony (acoustic guitar) and Byron Roy (keyboard), and
LIGHTEN UP - That's the idea at Cock & Bull's Comedy Night running through the spring months. We sat in on an evening of comedians from around the Houston area right here in our own Clear Lake. Chatting with them during breaks, a prevalent comment of theirs was that we have one fantastic setting at the Cock & Bull for this kind of entertainment (sometimes takes an outsider to help point these things out). As far as the entertainment goes, a good laugh has been something missing for awhile, and we'll be back to get more. Also at the Cock & Bull in April, we enjoyed a relaxed Friday dinner with Wood & Wind on stage with a

Spring has finally sprung and hopefully our Gulf Coast weather we deserve will last for awhile - eight weeks-worth seems fitting... So, based on our samplings on the crawfish front, our initial dismay with the higher prices this season has been pleasingly satisfied with HUMONGOUS-sized offerings places are serving, the like that actually takes a couple bites to devour, making this year's mudbug season a great time to mingle and catch up with friends, family and neighbors, yes? Which gets us to another heart of the area's fine offerings, our Live Music SCENE where our April samplings were nothing short of fantastic! Our local artists have been at it adding new tunes, folding in new techniques, and sounding ‘60s Party @ Cock-Eyed better than ever and watching Seagull with Hourglass

Cold Feet @ Seabrook Community Center you out there, I know you're enjoying it, too. Let's run down some of what went down in April. FLASHBACK - In the era of '80s garage band warriors was a local group by the name of Cold Feet based out of La Porte, that took the area by storm. Decades later, Cold Feet (Donny McCorquodale, David Hargrave, Danny Douglass, and Jack Horn) still play and their shows are announced by merely word of mouth. In April, we dropped everything to catch Cold Feet at the Seabrook Community Center and enjoyed one of the strongest performances these ears have ever enjoyed, as fine as an 80-year-old scotch! Cold Feet fans are amongst the best I've ever seen ranging from the ages of 2-foot-tall rockers to our beloved seasoned citizens and the rest of us in between. I've always wanted to hear what this natural hall reverb place sounded like and with the mixer set up dry, the ambience at the center was simply superb. We've simply got to figure out how to have more shows there. Opening for Cold Feet started the acoustic duo of Chris Elliott and Starr Jernigan - arguably two from the music cosmo's finest to offer each alternating licks and hits on vocals, lead, and rhythm. One thing listeners like about this duo is how they play the entire set non-stop with transitions between numbers creatively crisp – that's simply one aspect. Articulate power, tightly woven and intricate synchopation are a couple others. Book 'em.... - Continued on Page 46

Who You Need To Know About Right Now:
Jordan Tydings of Thread Belly By Rhonda Meredith Back in April 2010, the Bay Area was introduced to Thread Belly, a progressive reggae band that has a strong, memorable musical groove. Thread Belly is the brainchild of musician/songwriter Jordan Tydings'. Performing casually in metal bands wasn’t the path he was looking for. Tydings had been mulling around with the thought of starting a band that would bring his creative vision to life. Things began to happen really quickly once he decided to go further with the idea. Tydings got plugged in with local musicians Charles Danford, Marc Borde, and Ryan Beard, and received opportunities to perform at Zone 504 and Scout Bar.
And as far as the name is concerned, the 27 year old Tydings said, “It came about simply because the two words sounded good when put together.” Life was looking really good and making some sense. Thread Belly’s songs were beginning to resonate with the crowds. There was a certain purpose revealing itself as Tydings’ talent developed. Things had not always been so clear. Growing up, Tydings traveled all over the world with his family and was exposed to many cultures. But, it wasn’t as glamorous as it sounds. Tydings' father used to make violins, and he taught Tydings and his siblings how to play. After mastering the violin, he picked up the mandolin at 8 years old. Then, he was drawn to the guitar around two years later. His family even had a bluegrass band. Tydings was set to play college football, but was sidelined due to a wrist injury and could not play. This, he says, was “a time of depression, but also a time of intense musical growth.” Years later, Tydings held corporate jobs with the titles “General Manager” and “Account Manager” but lost his employment after being arrested for not taking care of a traffic ticket. He says this was a catalyst into changing his life and pursuing his dreams. One of his favorite quotes comes from Vince Lombardi who is best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s. "In the pursuit for perfection we achieve excellence." - Continued on Page 42
BREAKING NEWS @ PRESS TIME: Local musician and singer/songwriter Jordan Tydings is now under a oneyear, non-exclusive contract with 3G Entertainment (Los Angeles, CA), under the umbrella of Universal Music Group, one of the industry's premier music publishing operations worldwide. This new partnership enables Thread Belly’s music to reach a bigger audience and puts a larger spotlight on the thriving Bay Area music scene.

Every day is a learning experience with his 6-year-old son Caleb, who is his “little man.” Like Father, Like Son Life Motto! “Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes it eats you.” Yep, his dad said it to him, now James says it to his son. Musically Inclined. Fan of the outdoors. You may catch James at a local open mic and/or karaoke night. He loves the blues and plays the acoustic guitar and even sings. With that being said, he likes to attend art and music
festivals. Loves to take trips and go backpacking, snowboarding, white water kayaking, surfing and the beach. He also competes in Mixed Martial Arts with his college. Why yes ladies – he IS single… To catch James’ eye, a woman must possess loyalty, honesty, a good head on her shoulders, and be maternal. Likes: BOOKS: Psychological thrillers and historical non-fiction. MOVIES: The LEGO Movie, Little Mermaid, Troy, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or anything with martial arts. The bottom line: Come see him at Pier 27 Tavern. He tries to get everyone to have a good time and smiling by the end of the night.

ZONE 504 SPORTS BAR & GRILL:
Great Views, Great Music & Great Drinks Specials By Rhonda Meredith Zone 504 Sports Bar & Grill’s friendly atmosphere has been a fixture in the Kemah Lighthouse District for more than eight years. The venue offers outdoor patio seating, a second story deck with a view, and an interior balcony overlooking the downstairs seating area. Pick a spot and enjoy Zone 504’s new and expanded draft beer tap system, including craft beer, sure to delight everyone. Entice your taste buds with an order of “Frychos.” This signature dish is not a cross between fries and nachos. No, let your imagine run big and think outside the box. The recipe begins with a pile of fries that is then topped with pulled pork, barbecue sauce, and cheese. Also on the menu is a variety of wings, sliders, and pizza. Come when the craving hits. The venue opens at 4 p.m. weekdays, at noon on the weekends, and the kitchen is always open late until 1 a.m. Enjoy outstanding service from the bar and keep in mind one of their signature shots (M-Bomb, Chocolate Love, and Pandas) when deciding on an adult beverage. Zone 504 shows all Houston sporting events and offers game-time drink and wing specials as well. The live musical entertainment varies throughout the week from DJ “Ne-Ko” spinning on Sunday nights, Mama Cass Karaoke on Monday nights, pick the hits on the jukebox on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, acoustic performers every Thursday nights, and live bands on Friday and Saturday nights. “A variety of bands perform,” said Jesse Chapa, one of Zone 504’s owners. He is speaking on behalf of co-owners Lori Chapa, and Eric and Krystal Gutierrez as well. “In May, we will be hosting Pirate Radio, Alvin and The Slickpunks, Revamp, The Band Hennessey, InDaSkies, Wyskey Tango, Soulfiya, and SNAFU.” Listen to the music from the indoor balcony upstairs, playing pool, or any of the other games downstairs. Dart tournaments are held on Monday nights at 10 p.m. And Corn Hole tournaments are every Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The neighborhood bar, located at 504 Kipp Avenue, is within a building designated a landmark by the Kemah Historical Society. There is never a cover charge to have a good time.

HARDY & CO. Sir Mix-A-Lot Sat., May 10 SCOUT BAR
Skid Row
Whiskey-Driven, Texas Outlaw Music debuts Friday, May 9 at Scout Bar
Tues., May 20 SCOUT BAR
By Rhonda Meredith Get ready for the debut of Hardy & Co. on Friday, May 9 at Scout Bar, located at 18307 Egret Bay Blvd. in Webster. Expect a high octane show that will blur the genre lines with musical influences such as ZZ Top, Reckless Kelly, Ian Moore, and Gary Allan just to name a few. It’s also local musician Chris J. Hardy’s (the band’s namesake) first ever appearance as a lead singer and front man of a full band. Hardy & Co. is comprised of Hardy, and three other accomplished musicians. James Copeland (guitars), Hardy’s longtime friend, had to re-learn how to use his left arm and hand as he recovered from a motorcycle accident that nearly cost him his life. “Hardy & Co. had to be put on hold while I waited for my best friend to heal,” said Hardy. “I didn't want any other guitar player and this guy was worth the wait!”
Navigators Sat., May 24 T-BONE TOMS
Chris Hardy’s WILL PLAY FOR FOOD III show benefiting the Galveston Food Bank will take place on June 28 at Scout Bar.
Chris Barnes (bass, upright bass) provides the low rumble. “Barnes is a true road dog musician. That guy puts on more miles and plays more music than anyone I know. He's paid his dues, and we are a better band for having him.” Rounding out Hardy & Co. is Eric Sanders (drums) whom Hardy built a musical kinship through an open mic night. “Eric was playing at every Open Mic in town. Sitting in and playing for anyone and everyone he could find. His enthusiasm and energy was a welcome fit for Hardy & Co. This guy loves to play anything!”
