MEDITERRANEO MARKET & CAFÉ Your World Cup Headquarters offering flavors from around the globe By Rhonda Meredith

with the right combination of spices so the flavor is distinct for that food.”

Mediterraneo Market & Café, at 18033 Upper Bay Rd. in Nassau Bay, is your viewing spot for the FIFA World Cup this month.

Kotb credits his wife Sonia for the high-quality of the food served at Mediterraneo. He says the love and care she puts into the family’s traditional recipes is the same whether she is in her home or in the kitchen at Mediterraneo. And as of August 2013, Sonia’s fabulous dishes are being served on the Upper Eastside of Miami where daughter Yasmine opened Mina's Mediterraneo, an intimate and modern Mediterranean eatery offering their family recipes.

The FIFA World Cup™ is the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world with 32 teams and approximately 735 players heading to Brazil to win this prestigious title. It's also the world's most widely viewed sporting event; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany; and the 2010 event in South Africa was broadcast to 204 countries on 245 different channels.

Mediterraneo uses spices, herbs, olive oil, sea salt, red wine, herbal teas and chamomile and pomegranate drinks to promote healthy eating. Spices and herbs are an important part to the overall Mediterranean diet and have medicinal properties and therapeutic effects. - Continued on Page 15

Watch all the World Cup games at Mediterraneo from June 12 until July 13 – that’s two to three games a day with tasty food and great camaraderie alongside other sports fans. “It’s like a community center in a sense,” owner Magdy Kotb says. Mediterraneo crosses borders to unite cultures. For the past 15 years, Mediterraneo has served the best dishes from more than 20 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, with a bit of American fare, from the heart to the table. The café opens at 9 a.m., Mondays through Saturdays to serve coffee and pastries. At lunch and dinnertime, Mediterraneo is filled with laughter and banter, as well the sound of dishes being set on the tables. One quick glance and it’s easy to see why you would like to sample many items on the menu. One taste, and it’s even easier to understand why it’s so easy to fall in love with the food. “Mediterraneo serves authentic food based on the traditions and cultures of the Mediterranean countries," said Kotb. “The secret to serving quality food is that it tastes good from within. All fresh meat, fish, and poultry each has to be marinated

NEW RESTAURANT REPORT:

Thai Stellar opens in Webster By Rhonda Meredith Thai Stellar is an authentic Thai restaurant with recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation in Thailand for more than 85 years. Established earlier this year, the restaurant, located at 803 NASA Parkway (next to Big Texas) in Webster, serves a wide range of Thai food from the Northern, Southern, and Northeastern variety on their menu. Back in Thailand, the original Thai Stellar was first in business in 1925 and is a well-known family restaurant in the Korat Province that is still there today. Four other locations opened in nearby cities Saraburi, Khon Kaen, Lopburi, and Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand. Thai Stellar guarantees you'll have a good, fresh dish for lunch or dinner with real Thai taste that you won’t get from anywhere else. Take a look at some of the items on the menu. The appetizer list has something for everyone. The “Cry of Tiger” (grilled steak served with spicy sauce), “Pau Pia Taud” (eggrolls with minced pork, glass noodles, shredded cabbage and carrots, fried and served with a pineapple dipping sauce), “Tou Hoo Taud” (crispy tofu deep fried and served with ground peanuts in sweet sauce), “Taud Mun Pla” (fish cakes), “Hoi Maleng Poo Hob” (stir fried mussels), “Thai Dumplings,” and “Chicken Satay.” The salad options include ground pork, calamari, seafood, shrimp, papaya, and Thai slaw (vegetarian) variations. There are plenty of soups to choose from as well. The “Tom Yum” (a spicy lemongrass soup with mushroom and smoked

chili with chicken or shrimp), “Tom Yum Po Tak” (seafood in spicy sour, lemongrass and Thai herbs), “Tom Kha Gai” (a chicken soup with mushrooms, coconut milk, and galangal), “Gaeng Jud Tou Hoo” (a clear soup with vegetables, scallions, glass noodles), and “Wonton Soup” (Thai style wonton in clear soup with roasted pork and shredded cabbage). The fried rice and stir-fried noodles are Thai Stellar’s specialties and are made fresh daily. Enjoy plain, or with chicken, pork, beef, tofu, vegetable, shrimp, scallops, or squid, or opt for a combination. Try the “Pineapple Fried Rice” (a creation of fried rice and a pineapple stir fry including raisins, carrot, cashews, onion, tomatoes and scallions with egg). Thai Stellar’s most popular dish is “Pad Thai” (rice noodles stir fried with eggs, bean sprouts, shredded cabbage, carrots, and scallions topped with crushed peanuts). Other customer favorites are the “Drunken Noodles” (soft wide noodles with bamboo, mixed vegetables, eggs, and basil stir fried in a fresh chili sauce), “Pad See-ew” (soft wide noodles with carrots, broccoli, eggs stir fried in a black sauce), “Cellophane Noodles” (noodles stir fried with eggs and mixed vegetables), and the “Lad Na” (stir-fried wide noodles topped with broccoli and carrots with in a brown gravy sauce). - Continued on Page 13

p.m. and live entertainment from local musicians Mickey Hobbs, Jeff Lopez and Jando on the corner stage. It’s a perfect opportunity to relax with a domestic or imported beer or choose a red wine from California, Greece, Chile, Italy, Spain, Argentina or Croatia.

It’s one of the keys to an American Medical Association-approved diet for a healthy heart. Your order is made fresh on an open fire grill without a greasy texture or baked. Not much on the menu is fried. “You will not feel heavy after one of our meals,” says Kotb. Enjoy gyros, falafel, hummus, paella kabobs, moussaka, grape leaves, pasta with shrimp, pesto, bolognese, pesto or primavera. Two worthy mentions on the specialty menu are the Lamb Tagine (with apricots, prunes, chickpeas, carrots and potatoes) and the Chicken Tagine (chicken thighs with lemons, green olives, carrots and potatoes). Each is served with couscous made with herbs, dried fruits and nuts and comes with harissa hot sauce. The Kotbs fell in love with the Bay Area after visiting family here in the 1970s. It wasn’t too long after that they decided to immigrate to the United States from Egypt. “Egypt is a melting pot of all cultures. Mediterraneo Market & Cafe is the natural combination of cultures,” says Kotb. “It is a good mix of relationships; and our menu offers a variety for everyone.” Mediterraneo is open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Stop in for a tempting dessert such as baklava, tiramisu, or a dark chocolate tart with an almond crust with a cup of Segafredo coffee. Or on Friday and Saturday evenings, enjoy the belly dancers performing at 7 and 8

Not far from the deli and beyond the seating area is Mediterraneo’s convenience store that is stocked full of authentic imported Mediterranean foods like teas, wine, jam, beans, crackers, grape leaves, spices, falafel, tabouli and hummus mixes. In between the deli and convenience store is a treasure trove of stuffed olives, candies, chocolates, and snacks for purchase. Snacks include nuts, Jordan almonds, hazelnuts, dried apricots, prunes and dates. “We want our customers to all be satisfied,” says Kotb. “Relationships are the key to any business and directly relational to the quality of your life. So, come in, sit down, and enjoy a conversation with family and friends. Your visit is our pleasure.”

The NASA community has space and art coming together every 3rd Saturday of the month with art exhibits from amazing artisans, sculptures, paintings, jewelry, ceramics and crafts plus found and eco art. There will be lots of fun, food and wine and the events will have exciting guests, such as astronauts and musicians, authors, poets, along with art classes for children, gourmet food trucks and interactive art projects. The Art Walk will also support our local charities by donating proceeds of our arts to the community. East Beach will be rocking the party this summer with free concerts. The East Beach entertainment stage for Bands on the Beach is presented by the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau. The event will feature local bands held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sundays through September 7. For more information about East Beach and the island’s other public beach parks, visit www.galvestonbeachinfo.com. The Tree Sculpture Tour is another fun freebie. BROUGHT TO LI

SC

Featured Artist: Carla Gauthier

GHT

Carla Gauthier’s water color paintings come alive with light and shadow. Looking more like candid snapshots, her paintings are far from ordinary watercolor. With the strokes of her brush, Gauthier creates such intimate details much like a photographer captures an unknowing subject. Her unique watercolor technique has garnered her local and regional recognition as well as many outstanding awards from the National Watercolor Society, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Watercolor Art Society of Houston – all of which she is also a member. Canadian born Gauthier has lived in the Bay Area for more than 20 years. She is an alumna of The Art Alliance at Clear Lake and has been teaching at Clear Lake Intermediate. Gauthier has an educational background in traditional drawing and printmaking. She became interested in painting, but she said one of her three children had asthma and painting with oils produced too many fumes. She explained, “Watercolor is cleaner and something I could walk away from. It’s on paper and more portable.” Gauthier said there were not as many college level courses for watercolor. “I was more self-taught on the side lines,” said Gauthier. She stated that she travelled to workshops to learn from artists “at the top of their game.” Her style didn’t fit the look of watercolor. “It’s more dark and heavy,” she added. Gauthier shared “It’s not what I was necessarily taught, but what I like. It’s just the way I work.” She said she now uses only three to five colors per painting as opposed to the once colorful works she used to paint. “I pared down colors. They got in the way. I push the texture and sacrifice to get values I want – not the typical style,” stated Gauthier. She said she did not have the luxury of going to the beach to paint like so many watercolor artists. She painted mostly from photographs in studio because of her kids. Gauthier joked, “The worse the photo, the better the painting.” She said, “I was not a good photographer. I remember what I see: The light infused with what I thought I saw.” Gauthier told that the photos and paintings don’t always match. “I start at one place and follow a different path,” she said. Gauthier stated she is trying to be more focused, “but I go in lots of directions.” She said architecture has always been a big influence in her work. While living in Belgium for two years, Gauthier said she was lucky enough to travel and take lots of photos of old architecture and workmanship. “It connects me to lots of paintings,” said Gauthier. “The value of craftsmanship amazed me and stopped me in my tracks.” She added that she is intrigued by bright light on architecture. She told she once photographed the same door two different times. The first time was in the fall, and it was dark and she never painted it; and the second picture was taken during spring time. Gauthier said, “It was bright so I painted it and realized it was the same door years later. I brought it to life.” To view more of Gauthier’s watercolors visit http://carlagauthier.com. Gauthier works are also available at Upper Bay Frame and Gallery in Nassau Bay.

Your ACTION GUIDE Get out and do something! Now! • Be Active!

SCENE (sen) Noun.

Explosive Routine maximizes weekly workouts Howdy my Meathead Minions! It's already a Jubilicious June! This month I'm going to hit on HIIT! High Intensity Interval Training. HIIT is a technique that's been around for quite some time and has been gaining popularity over the past couple years. HIIT is the full term for what people commonly call Interval Training. You've probably even seen a setting for it on some newer treadmills, but what does it mean? It's pretty simple. By using a short span of high intensity spurts of activity interspersed with your normal pacing of exercise you can shock the muscles into gaining strength, speed and burning calories at a higher rate. Most common applications of HIIT are sprints. You'll see people lift a few sets then go hit the treadmill and run like the IRS is after them! Another way to get the effect is every third or fourth set take your weight to 60% of your one rep max and rep out until muscle failure. A third option would be to incorporate a ballistic component for a set after several standard sets. This could be anything from high jumps, box jumps, skipping rope, or medicine ball/kettle bell explosive motions. These techniques all qualify as HIIT. The key to being successful

with HIIT is to keep moving after you hit the high end. Get immediately back into the regular pacing. HIIT works two ways: First, by increasing effort explosively, you will Fitness Columnist encourage release Rick Hunter of Human Growth Hormone into your system to accommodate the increased stress to your system. This release will be used to improve the muscle strength and potentially increase protein synthesis (muscle growth). Secondly, by getting your heart rate up dramatically during your workout, you increase EPOC, which is Excessive Postexercise Oxygen Consumption. In training circles we commonly call this the Afterburn, where for several hours after exercise you will use oxygen at a much higher rate than normal, thereby increasing the amount of calories your body to burn more calories during that period. This phase can last from four to 48 hours, depending on your intensity. Like any fitness program HIIT can be used to break a plateau in your

progress. Most trainers would recommend against using it as your routine since it can be somewhat stressful to the body and lead to overtraining injuries. HIIT is best kept as a change up from routine, not the routine itself. Using it once a week can help you attain your goals safely and keep your workouts from getting boring! So get out there and go explosive to keep those results you've worked so hard for, but always, always remember to GET IN THE GYM! -----------------------------Rick Hunter is a personal trainer and founder of founder of MEathead's Fitness. The Margarita Returns Home to Galveston for

TEXAS TEQUILA & MARGARITA FESTIVAL at Moody Gardens • Friday, June 13 to Sunday, June 15 It has been long rumored that the first margarita was made in Galveston at the historic and legendary Balinese Room. The discussion heats up as Texas Tequila & Margarita Festival organizers are preparing for an explosive weekend of tequila tastings, margarita samplings, great food, and music as this “Texas sized” festival rolls in to Galveston June 13-15, 2014. This year’s festival, at Moody Gardens, will feature an epic gathering of the world’s best tequilas alongside some of the region’s best restaurants competing for title of “Best Margarita”. The festival weekend is comprised of four anchor events, “Tequila Herradura Social”, “Tour de Tequila”, “Margarita Grand Tasting”, and a “Little Mexico” inspired outdoor festival. The Friday night event, “The Social Presented by Tequila Herradura”, brings together industry professionals and weekend festival goers for an evening of sipping on specialty tequila cocktails, a delectable “create your own” taco bar, and live music. Moody Gardens “Bands on Sand” and fireworks over the bay round out the kickoff to the weekend festivities! Saturday is action packed starting with “Tour de Tequila” in Expo A at the Moody Gardens Convention Center (1pm-4pm). Some of the world’s best tequilas come together to present their various styles of tequila alongside restaurants showing the public the dynamic fusion of pairing food and tequila together. At 3:00pm the doors open in Expo B & C for the “Margarita Grand Tasting”. 40 restaurants, businesses, and individual teams compete for “Best Margarita” in their categories. A preselected judging panel will award “Best Margarita” based on style, taste, and presentation. A “People’s Choice” award will be given to the restaurant or individual that receives the most votes cast by visitors at the event. During the “People’s Choice”, visitors will be able to vote with their dollar and 100% of the money collected will go directly to Friday Harbour charity. Don’t let the sun go down without strolling to the Oleander Bowl at Moody Gardens for the Outdoor Festival presented by Dos-A-Rita. Intentionally created to feel like a passport to a street fair with a “Little Mexico” flair! This area offers a distinctive shopping experience, fashioned after a traditional Mexican village, a live music stage with the sounds of Latin, Blues, Country, and Rock music. Various flavors of margaritas will be offered, all the fan favorite Mexican foods, alongside traditional festival staples from sausage on a stick to funnel cakes! Gates for the outdoor festival are noon10pm. Texans love their “Tex-Mex” and this festival delivers with its charity Fajita Cook-Off benefitting Friday Harbour & Galveston County Fair & Rodeo. Teams will compete for best

TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE turns Clear Lake into a top High-Performance Boating, Biking & Car Destination

The 7th Annual TEXAS OUTLAW CHALLENGE: June 19, 20, 21, 22 The 2014 Texas Outlaw Challenge promises to be bigger, better and feature the most horsepower yet. Paul Robinson – the primary organizer behind this event that is already considered the biggest of its kind in Texas – has added new features in 2014. Returning this year is the two-day Gunslinger Poker Run, the GPS Outlaw Shootout, the Stampede Street Party, the Miss Outlaw Bikini Contest, the Outlaw Corral and last year’s new addition, the Steel Horse Stampede custom bike show and contest. New this year is the High Horsepower Dock Party at the Turtle Club and the Red-Eye Round-up Brunch at Jackie’s Brickhouse. Both events demonstrate this year’s change to include more local venues to host events. The Miss Outlaw Bikini Contest is moving to Club Cabo and the Stampede Street Party will be held on 6th Street in Kemah between popular venues Skallywag Suds-n-Grub, Bakkhus Taverna, Monkey Bar and Palapas. The Texas Outlaw Challenge was one of the first poker run events to incorporate a separate top-speed (GPS Outlaw) shootout as one of its activities for interested participants. This out-of-the-box thinking by the organizers takes the pressure off for big-speed exhibitions during the poker run in favor of saving the highest-speed racing for a controlled course maximiumizing saftey and offering great spectator views. Learn more about the event at www.TexasOutlawChallenge.com.

Baytown’s Pirates Bay Waterpark – Fun for the Family Pirates Bay Water Park, located at the Wayne Gray Sports Complex, 5300 East Road in Baytown, is a Caribbean-themed, 4-acre water park. Operated by the Baytown Parks and Recreation Department, the family-friendly resort-styled park opened the summer of 2010. Pirates Bay features attractions for everyone with two Beach-style, “zero–entry” pools, a large active and colorful Pirate themed water play center complete with a large dumping bucket and an awesome array of spray nozzles, tot slides, and water guns, a 671 foot long lazy river and two large slide towers. Tower activities include fun for both the little ones and daredevils with everything from run-out slides to racing tubes. Beach-style, “zero–entry” pools (gradually sloping from the deck into the water, becoming deeper with each step, in the manner of a natural beach) is ideal for older people or families with young children. The feature attraction is the Flowrider surfing machine. The Flowrider provides an endless moving mountain of water with all the excitement of ocean surfing that challenges all who enter. Surfer boys and girls can ride the waves with an audience, as there is always a crowd watching. New for 2014 is a wave pool, two new slides and a concession area. The park also features a climbing wall, crossing challenge, and a small rectangular pool for lap swimming and programs such as swim lessons, and water volleyball. A concession stand will provide tasty burgers and other snacks; and covered picnic areas invite visitors to rest between activities. An air conditioned meeting room will be available yearround for rentals for family reunions and company outings. The park also offers five party tents and two large pavilions available for rentals for birthday parties or family get-togethers. Visitors enjoy free tubes, free parking and are welcome to bring coolers, provided no glass bottles or alcoholic beverages are brought onsite. The 2014 aquatic season for Pirates Bay began in May. The season will end on Sunday, August 24. However, the park will re-open for Labor Day weekend August 30 through September 1. The schedule will be dependent on weather after Labor Day. Pirate's Bay is open daily June through August from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $20 for persons taller than 48 inches; $15 for those below 48 inches. Group rates and Season Passes are available for individuals and families as well. Please visit www.baytown.org/piratesbay for updates and more information, or call Pirates Bay Waterpark at 281-422-1150. Tickets can be purchased online or at the park.

Lakewood Yacht Club’s Shoe Race Perpetual Trophy goes to J/22 racer Vincent Ruder The overall winner of the 2014 Caliche Rum Shoe Regatta hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club was claimed by J/22 racer Vincent Ruder, a liveaboard with wife Janet on a 33’ Hunter berthed at the Kemah Boardwalk Marina. Held over the weekend of May 17 and 18 on Galveston Bay, the regatta had nine classes with 44 boats participating. The Awards Ceremony took place in Lakewood’s ballroom late Sun. afternoon, May 18.

“Being named the overall winner was a complete shock and surprise to me,” related Ruder. “The thought about that happening never entered my mind.” The Shoe Regatta Perpetual Trophy is given to the winner of the most competitive class of spinnaker classes sailing windward/leeward courses with at least 5 entrants. Ruder’s crew was wife Janet at the foredeck, who was responsible for getting him into racing in the first place, and Brant Keopke, his trimmer, who is very active in the J/22 class in the area and district. “He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the success we’ve been experiencing on the boat this season,” explained Ruder. “Not only does he trim sails, but he guides me around the course. I just steer the thing and try to keep it going fast.”

LAKEWOOD YACHT CLUB 281-474-2511 "Lakewood Yacht Club's Commodore Tom Collier (left) presented the Perpetual Trophy for the 2014 Caliche Rum Shoe Regatta to the overall winner Vincent Ruder and wife Janet during the Awards Ceremony. Pictured next to Collier are Vincent Ruder, Shoe Regatta Chairman Dwight Bengtson, Janet Ruder and crew member Brant Keopke. Ruder's J/22 was in the most competitive class of spinnaker classes sailing windward/leeward courses with at least five entrants."

Skipper and crew had decided to approach the Shoe Regatta with a little more seriousness than they would for some of the other racing events in the area. Keopke has a philosophy of “racing the

course” versus racing the other competitors. “Focus turns to Mother Nature and we concentrate on getting around the course as quickly as possible. Putting ourselves in the most favorable wind and water conditions at all times seems to be working,” Ruder added.

LYC to host 4th Hatteras Yacht Rendezvous Lakewood Yacht Club Fleet Captain Jim Winton has announced that the club will host the fourth Hatteras Rendezvous over Thurs., June 26 – Sun., June 29. “We are very pleased to once again host this fun event for all Hatteras owners around the Gulf Coast. One does not need to be a Lakewood member in order to participate,” Winton stated. “The Hatteras Rendezvous Committee consisting of Lesley Hurley and Asa Lockhart has been diligently working for the last few months on a variety of activities for the weekend.” The evening of June 26 will begin with an informal gathering for early arrivals in the Inner Harbor. On Fri., June 27 there will be a buffet and band with dancing by the swimming pool. The next day, Sat., June 28, will feature a full array of informative seminars on topics of interest to Hatteras owners followed by a Hatteras Rendezvous Fashion Show sponsored by West Marine’s flagship store in League City. All club members and their guests are invited to join the group in the lounge for this show. That night the Rendezvous Committee has arranged for a New Orleans style buffet with music by Bourbon Street, again, for everyone whether or not they are participating in the Ren-

TEXAS CRAFT BEER production a runaway gusher Lone Star state’s craft beer industry grew more than 17% in 2013 The Texas craft beer industry grew more than 17% in 2013 based on volume of craft beer produced, according to the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, the non-profit trade association for Texas craft brewers. Most impressive, Texas craft brewers producing less than 225,000 barrels of beer per year – nearly 100 of them – grew 44%. These strong growth numbers, as measured by production volume, demonstrate Texas consumers’ growing desire for high quality, locally produced beer, in the wide variety of styles and flavors that craft breweries actively offer.

# of Texas Breweries 1860 ..11

1915 ....5

1876 ..58

1995 ..18

1890 ..13 2013 ..84 Beer production is measured in barrels – a quantity of beer equivalent to two standard kegs of beer, or about 55 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles or cans. Overall, Texas craft breweries brewed 833,191 barrels of craft beer in 2013, up from 708,338 in 2012, a growth rate of 17.63%. Texas breweries producing less than 225,000 barrels per year, however, were able to begin selling beer in their taprooms as of last summer, thanks to legislation passed by the 83rd Texas Legislature. These breweries and brewpubs brewed 265,958 barrels in 2013, up from 184,338 in 2012 – weighing in with a hefty 44.28% growth rate. Where previously these producers represented less than 1% of the beer consumed in Texas, their volume percentage now ticks upward, reaching 1.36% in 2013. Nationally, the craft beer market grew by 18% in 2013, according to the Brewers Association, the national trade association for craft brewers. Overall, craft beer brewers produced 15.6 million barrels of craft beer, giving Texas producers a 5.34% share of the national craft beer market.

Houston Craft Beer Radio

“The Texas Craft Brewers Guild is excited to see the continued strong growth of Texas craft beer,” says Charles Vallhonrat, Executive Director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild. “Texas Craft Brewers Guild members brew 98.66% of the craft beer produced in Texas. They worked tirelessly in 2013 to keep Texas competitive with other states when it comes to the marketing and sale of craft beer.”

Signature Drinks:

JACKIE B’S AT SUDIE’S SEAFOOD HOUSE DELTA DAWG – This frozen layered drink is perfect for summer. It is half margarita and half hurricane layered in between DeKuyper® Razzmatazz (a dark red liqueur flavored with ripe raspberries) at the bottom and topped with a melon liqueur float and a cherry garnish. Pair it with a grilled shrimp salad. COSMOPOLITAN – A classy drink that is made with vodka, a melon liqueur, lime and cranberry juices. All ingredients are shaken with ice and poured into a martini glass, then garnished with a lemon wedge. The refreshing flavors complement a “Fresh Catch Feature” at Sudie’s. Opt for the Mahi Magnolia, a lO-l2 ounce filet that is blackened or grilled and topped with sautéed shrimp, crabmeat, and mushrooms; and cooked in a white wine cheese sauce.

NASA E-CIGS Bay Area’s Largest Inventory By Rhonda Meredith Nasa E-Cigs, located at 194 Gulf Freeway South in League City (in the Kroger Shopping Center) is a part of the electronic cigarette revolution. It’s a one-stop shop for a huge inventory of e-cigarettes, a large assortment of popular mods, a wide variety of accessories, and even replacement parts. The full-service store features products by Halo, V2, eGo, Vapor Couture, Vapor 4 Life, Volcano and Liquids By Terry. They stock variable voltage mod selections from iTaste, Kamry, Tesla, and Vamo. They also carry items from the “Made In The U.S.A.” Longhorn Vapor Co. out of Texas and Oklahoma. Nasa E-Cigs carries different types of e-cig kits ranging from basic, standard, and deluxe. All are refillable and stylish; and most have different colors available such as white, blue, pink, red, and multi-color. Technically the term is “vaping” instead of “smoking” and “e-cig” is the correct way to refer to an electronic cigarette. These no-offensive odor, no-smoke devices have gone from novelty conversation pieces, to finding their way in the hands of former tobacco users worldwide. The products are intended for use by persons 18 or older. A first-time visitor will experience cheerful banter in an open and bright area that has a tropical twist. The staff is very knowledgeable, and they don’t mind answering questions. One common query is “What are the differences between a traditional and an electronic cigarette?” For one thing, an e-cig is considered the healthier alternative. A traditional cigarette is made of tobacco leaves rolled in paper that burns to create smoke. The e-cig is made of metal, and the battery is designed to simulate the effects of smoking both in design and function. It heats up a flavored liquid to create a thick water vapor that closely resembles that of tobacco cigarette smoke. But, in reality, there is no hazardous second hand smoke, no ash, no risk of fire hazards, and no mess. The flavored liquid, also called an “e-liquid” can be purchased by different strengths, in different sizes, and, of course, different flavors. Nasa E-Cigs has more than 250 flavors of liquid and a trybefore-you-buy policy at their “nobacco” bar. Have a seat at their e-liquid lounge and pick a few favorite flavors. Taste the Belgian Cocoa, Captain Jack, Café Mocha, Bonzai Banana, BlueWater Punch, Vanilla Bean, Milk Chocolate, Bacon, Clove, Cotton Candy, cool mint flavors with or without menthol, and many, many others to choose from.

LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 45 ANNUAL OLEANDERS - Hosted by Andy and Vicki Upchurch, this party by musicians for musicians (and friends) year in and year out is one of my alltime favorites. Joining the Dreamsicles and the Kick Ass Brass this year was The Night Caps (a newcomer that I've never heard before and totally enjoyed) and the Crossroads (who you can often enjoy at T-Bone Tom’s). It’s always great to catch up with the regulars at this party and always fun meeting all the new faces joining the fold. As this year’s event fell on Memorial Day Weekend, we were blown away this year with Bill Samson (arguably amongst the region’s finest baritones) bringing the party to a complete momentary halt with rendition of Battle Hymn of The Republic fitting for a nation. IT’S A WRAP Forbes Magazine reports the Houston area as the No. 1 place in the nation for growth. As my philosopher buddy Steve Revak muses, it makes you wonder what in the world the rest of the nation is doing. As for me, yours truly is wrapping up an incredible year of rebound and looking forward. All the best, and we’ll see you out there!

FAB 5 - Yup, the folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse did it again this month and brought the area something somewhat new: The Fab 5 Beatles Tribute Band. These cats have been all around the Houston area, and I was curious how well they’d be received. The audience at Jackie’s on this evening was very much like with Spare Hearts (a Heart tribute band). They stopped in and were initially respectful of the music, but soon enough, got their feet moving and then partying the night away. The audience at Jackie’s is a crazy good fun bunch with their live music. Cheers!

for getting to live in and play in a cool and awesome country. It was totally unexpected but resonated. As for their new material: Go ahead and read what this album is all about on their Facebook page. It's written perfectly. What I can tell you is that sonically, the duo of Cristina and Andrea Ferro hits it song after song after song with the power and passion like no other with the possible of exception of Meatloaf and Ellen Foley from the Bat Out of Hell days – which I consider darn good...

TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - While on my rant of strong consistency, Scout Bar (true to form) has not only upgraded their indoor beer garden/ sports bar sitting area, but also upgraded their presentation with new sound and light boards, all just in time to pack the house with International touring act LaLacuna Coil cuna Coil, from Milano, @ Scout Bar Italy, and four months

MUSICAL CHAIRS - Last month, we made mention of how Billy Gilbert has been rekindling this effective format, sharing the stage with an ever-changing line-up of local talent. This month at the Cock-Eyed Seagull, we caught Billy joining up with members of the Myrna Sanders band and, boy, did it sound good! With Lynn Raggio on lead, Joann Stone and Reida Reilly on percussion, and Myrna holding down bass, acoustic rhythm and vocals, a band like this makes me wonder why hardly anybody records live shows any more these days. This stuff was crazy good in all positions. Speaking of recording... WILL PLAY FOR FOOD - Is coming up around the corner. I was chatting with Roland Belmarez about how the mastering on the CD was coming. For those unfamiliar with the methods: Mastering music is the process where the tunes are checked for playability be it through earbuds, boom boxes, car players, or home entertainment centers – all from the same take. People sometimes incorrectly think that mastering music is where one can create the tone and tenor of a song different from the original recording, which, good people, is difficult if not impossible, and all the reason to capture the original mix right the first time. Somehow this gets us back to the dearth of quality live music recordings. Anyway... One band that would be great to listen to 24/7 would be...

short of consistently outstanding these days. The artists we sampled in May were fundamentally rock solid and – with their firm foundation – able to delve into the interesting, the delightful, and newly invent what could easily have been considered tired and old; and, to these ears, is a pleasant treat we get to enjoy out on the place we call The SCENE. A bit of what all went down....

The month of May had us hopping all across the gamut this year on both the indoor and outdoor front. Belated April showers tried dampening things, but we were not to be denied. Many of you we spoke with shared recently seeking your new normals with the changes of family, life, health and professions – more of you than what would seem normal. I used to think that advocates for change were for those incapable of maintaining any meaningful consistency and came to the conclusion that it should be the other way around, where one’s stability and consistency better enables one to handle the curve balls of the universe which is a long winding path getting me to the point that the live music Roger Creager @ League City SCENE has been nothing Village Fair & Texas Music Festival

This month, we took in the 2013 Houston Press Best Female Vocalist, Annika Chambers, and – boy – did they get this one right! Warming up the audience this evening was Paul Ramirez who needed no more than half a song before he was channeling soulful blues with a direct link straight from the cosmos. Paul is the type of blues player that needs to be shared nationally. He’s THAT good, and with Annika, Katie’s Paul Ramirez @ Katie’s patrons never have had it so good! Pick a night, any night! In October 2013, Phillip Overly, an area resident, took over ownership of the landmark Henry Waynes bar that had served the area for 30 years and spent a good three months remodeling and upgrading the venue. Earlier this year, he opened D-Bar 937 with many polished touches. The non-smoking interior is now furnished with nice wood tables and big chairs, leather couches, a full-liquor, tiled bar with ample seating around it, flat screen TVs, games, darts, pool tables, a corner stage, dance floor, and a large outdoor back patio complete with a sound system. Overly has made good use of the spacious interior. Weekly events include Sunday burgers on the patio with a neighborly feel to it. It’s all about the drink specials on Wednesday nights because it’s Ladies Night. On Fridays, start the weekend off right with karaoke from 9 p.m. until close. Saturday nights, they host live bands. Typically, it is a cover band rocking the stage or the outdoor patio, if weather permits. Catch Rhythm & Rock on a monthly rotation; and on June 21, Inside Out is performing.

Experience. Lauren has enjoyed five fun years of bartending. And her signature drinks sound so good…“Chocolate Love” (and who doesn’t love chocolate?) is a sweet drink based with vodka, chocolate liqueur, and Bailey’s Irish Cream. The “Panda” starts with strawberry infused vodka mixed with pineapple and cranberry juices and a spritz of Sprite. The best thing about Zone 504? If she has to choose just one or two reasons, she says “her bosses and her regulars.” Native Texan. Lauren was born in Texas and has lived in Kemah for the past 10 years. When she isn’t at Zone 504: She is enjoying her new role as an aunt! Favorite Music: Lauren’s musical tastes are varied for sure. She likes “old school” Janis Joplin, Dave Matthews Band, Drake, and Katy Perry to name a few. Drama Free… Except Where TV Shows Are Concerned! Luckily HER life is drama-free, but Lauren does admit that her favorite TV shows are any of the “Housewives” ones. I say “summer,” she says: Refreshing drinks, the beach, and a pool bar! Lauren would most

definitely rather be outside than inside! Vacations? In October, she is headed to New Orleans for a wedding. And if money was not an object, she would head to Bora Bora and have a room with the water visible under the floor. June is National Vegetable and Fruit Month… (Who knew?) Lauren’s favorite veggie is spinach and her top fruit is strawberries. Notable Hobby: Cooking or, more specifically, she loves making comfort food healthier. The last dinner she cooked as of this interview was turkey tacos.

THE SUMMERTIME PARTY SEASON IS IN FULL SWING AT CABO! By Rhonda Meredith Craving a Philly cheese steak taco and wanting to play a game of giant Connect 4 at the same time? Sound like a dream? Look no further… Cabo has it covered! Summertime is in full swing at this waterfront venue, located at 2513 NASA Parkway in the heart of Seabrook at the intersection of Nasa Road 1 and Lakeside Drive. Cabo can handle the heat with its cool food choices and cold drinks, live entertainment, and refreshingly fun games. Arrive by car or boat at this waterfront venue and chill out while enjoying the views. Their menu features the new Philly cheese Steak taco amidst customer favorites like the Green Chile Pulled Pork Tacos (stewed pork shoulder, green chile sauce, queso fresco, onion, and cilantro, chips and queso), Blackened Ahi Tuna (an 8-ounce ahi tuna steak is seared and blackened on a hot skillet in a lime butter sauce, with a salad and your choice of side item), and the Sunset Burger (100% Angus beef and topped with a fried egg, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and a side of barbecue sauce). Other food choices range from appetizers to sandwiches. Thursday nights are hot and juicy, made-to-order steak nights! Cabo has live entertainment seven days a week with the best cover bands, acoustic music and DJs in Texas. After dinner, hang out until the entertainment begins and partake in one of Cabo’s generous nightly drink specials. Try one of Cabo’s frozen concoctions such as the “Strawberry Lime-aid” or the frozen “Arnold Palmer.” The waterfront venue is spacious and has numerous entertainment amenities such as: a pool table, ping pong table, darts, electronic games, jumbo-sized Jenga blocks, a foosball table, and the afore-mentioned new giant Connect 4 game. Test your knowledge on the Wednesday night “Trivia Night” which will start back up in late June. A little bit of light remodeling has gone on at Cabo. The downstairs Beach Bar has

been completely decked and new tables and chairs have been added and upstairs, the number of flat screen TVs has doubled. There isn’t a bad seat in the house while watching various sporting events. Or even a bikini contest. Mark your calendar right now! On Friday, June 20, Cabo is hosting the “Texas Outlaw Challenge” Miss Outlaw Bikini Contest that offers up cash and various prizes totaling $2,500. Cabo is a premier place to unwind, let loose, and just have a good time any day of the week. The term “A.W.O.L.” (After Work On the Lake) has become more than a battle cry on Fridays. A.W.O.L. has become the much appreciated transition from work to play on the weekend. The friendly crowd that assembles at Cabo knows how to have some fun! Make plans now to celebrate July 4th with fun in the sun and stay to watch the Kemah fireworks. Cabo will offer great music and drink special all weekend long!

CD Release Party & Show at Scout Bar June 28 By Rhonda Meredith It’s a simple concept. Starving artists helping starving people. On this principle, local singer/songwriter Chris J. Hardy and more than a dozen of the Bay Area’s singers, songwriters, musicians, and bands are using their talents to help those who fight hunger on Saturday, June 28 at Scout Bar, located at 18307 Egret Bay Boulevard. All proceeds from this event will go to the Galveston County Food Bank.

Feeding America estimates that roughly 51,940 Galveston County residents are in need of emergency food assistance in a single year. That is 1 in 5 of our neighbors in Galveston County, compared to the national average of 1 in 6. We all have experienced the feeling and most of us can stop the temporary experience of hunger. Unfortunately, thousands of individuals EACH WEEK in southeast Texas may not have that choice. They do not know where dinner will come from today or tomorrow. Most are not homeless. Most are children. The face of hunger could be your neighbor. Let’s see what we can do when we become a part of something bigger than we are…
