They will mark their anniversary on Saturday, July 5, with a celebration to show their appreciation. “Without the support of the Dickinson-area community, we would not have made it this far,” said The Herb Café’s owner Adam Folden. “Please come celebrate this momentous achievement with us!” The family-friendly eginning this month, The Herb Café and event will include Market is excited to offer a farmer’s market drink and food experience every Saturday showcasing locally specials, givegrown produce, arts, crafts, wines, honey, aways, local artiand other cool items for sale. He, along with business partner Walter Wilson and Chef AJ Robicheaux, began a journey of creating an eatery that wasn’t exclusive, but rather inclusive to all in the community. The hard work was recognized in 2013 when The Herb Café received the Small Business Award from the Galveston County Chamber of Commerce. “We have a little bit for everyone,” said Folden. “It’s all good and The Herb Café is not bound by any one type of cuisine.” Whichever you choose, you are surely going to taste a difference. “Our food just tastes better. Items like salad dressing, chicken broth, and roux are all homemade,” said Folden. “All of our dishes are from scratch using the freshest ingredients available, many of which are derived from our very own, on-site garden.” The Herb Café grows garden fresh herbs like garlic, basil, rosemary, and mint to name a few.

SKALLYWAG SUDS N’ GRUB:

Friends, It’s Time To Get Hungry By Rhonda Meredith Skallywag Suds N’ Grub (located literally right inside the Kemah Lighthouse District at 600 6th Street) starts serving lunch at noon every day. So friends, it’s time to get hungry… Chef Joe Rackley and Ernie Garza, his first mate in the kitchen, like to create recipes that are outside of the box. Skallywag offers “food truck-esque” styled food and a revolving menu of made-from-scratch exotic game burgers, smoked meat sandwiches and more. Think Southern fusion pub grub. The new items on Skallywag’s menu are the “Frying Nemo” (beer battered fish and chips with a side of homemade tartar sauce), a slowroasted pork tostada topped with pineapple relish aptly called the “Pork Tostada,” a pork spare rib plate with bourbon beer glaze, sautéed greens and habanero cornbread, the “Bullwinkle” (an elk burger cooked in duck fat, topped with blue cheese, house made curry stout, fried sage, cumin, mustard, and pickled red onion), and the “Totes Ma Goats” (grilled goat cheese sliders, bacon and a tomato jam). The tomato jam’s “secret” ingredient is Angry Orchard’s Apple Cider. Both Rackley and Garza are pretty stoked

THE SCENE

about the new menu. Rackley, a former minor league umpire who began his chef career at Bakkhus Taverna five years ago, is “happy to be adding more beer in the recipes.” And Garza, who has 12 years experience cooking in higherend resorts and hotels as well as Italian restaurants, says their food "melts in your mouth!” “Customer favorites are still available as well as non-menu items if the ingredients are on hand,” said Rackley. Skallywag Suds N’ Grub is a great lunch time spot. “We serve lunch orders quickly,” said Garza. Swing by on Tuesday evenings for Beer and Burger Night (any beer and any burger) for $9. Then complement your meal with a drink from the bar, chilled wine or the 43 beer taps and another 50 to 60 brands in bottles. Owners Demetri Kouloumoundras and his brother John Kouloumoundras have taken great care in creating Skallywag. The design of the bar maintains an intimacy and atmosphere that is unlike anything in the area. - Continued on Page 15

THE HERB CAFE: Continued From Page 9

Thursday of the month. Reservations are required.

House Favorites include the blackened Rib eye with mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans, King Ranch chicken, grilled pork chops, shrimp etoufeé, and grilled chicken breast topped with a pineapple relish and served with garlic ginger fried rice and stir fry vegetables.

Sit indoors or on the patio with outdoor seating. “We take your dining experience seriously,” said Folden. “Leave the negativity at the front door and relax. Come enjoy the same quality food and service level expected at a more expensive restaurant.”

Sandwiches are carefully crafted in a myriad of ways. The “B.L.A.T.” is a delicious layering of crisp Applewood bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado between two thick slices of Texas toast. Explore the thrill of the Cuban sandwich, Philly cheese steak, the Banh-Mi, a Vietnamese char-grilled pork (or chicken) topped with shredded carrots, cucumber, fresh cilantro, and sliced jalapeño served on toasted La' Baccia bread, or the fish tacos with a coconut-cilantro chimichurri.

As a bonus to great food and service, Folden says he and his staff are environmentally conscious. “We make an effort to not throw out much and will compost, recycle, refurbish, and re-purpose to accomplish this.”

The Herb Café takes their customers’ dietary needs into consideration and can create a paleo or gluten free entrée. Also, many menu items are vegetarian friendly. Opt for a veggie quesadilla, margherita pizza, penne pasta, a vegetarian Reuben sandwich, or even a spicy zucchini frita made from fresh eggs baked with thinly sliced zucchini, jalapeño, red onion and corn. In additional to the rotating daily lunch specials, The Herb Café and Market offers a “Friday Night Steak Night” that features a Prime Rib with rosemary-garlic mashed potatoes and a sautéed squash medley. Enjoy your steak with a domestic or imported beer or choose a glass of wine from their full selection of wines around the world. Folden is a Level 1 Sommelier and can help you choose which wine will complement your meal. And carefully planned four-course wine dinners are on the last

T

he Herb Café is in the process of renovating a 50-year-old wood fire brick oven and smoker. “It’s pretty cool,” says owner Adam Folden. “We found this rare piece of equipment after cleaning out the building it was housed in. The Herb Café was a barbecue joint in the ’60s through ’70s, so it’s a piece of its history.” Dickinson barbecue expert Donnie Thomas is assisting in the “bringing back to life” process. Folden is planning ahead for Smoke Out Saturdays. “It’s huge and could feed all of Dickinson!”

The Herb Café and Market is open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 281-3374080 to place an order for delivery or pick-up. The Café is available for private parties. Off-site catering can be customized to your event. Chef Robicheaux’s diverse cooking skills and creativity will exceed your expectations.

SKALLYWAG: Continued From Page 10 “We will not be pretentious in any way...” Demetri said. This is evident in the details. “I like collecting old things. It’s collecting memories. Every piece of wood used in creating the bar has some kind of meaning or story.” To further demonstrate the Kouloumoundras’ family involvement, the bar’s name ‘skallywag’ was a term used by Demetri and John’s great-grandfather. And

while the term may have a few definitions, in this instance, it means a “craft beer ice house that serves damn good food with a come-as-youare laid-back atmosphere.”

Featured Artist: Ethan Elgersma

By Kelley Dawson Carried slowly by a water current, the gnarled driftwood made it to shore, but its journey didn’t end there. Another drifter-of-sorts found the debris and saw its artistic potential. Artist and sculptor, Ethan Elgersma told of his first attempt at carving driftwood. He said, “It worked and was motivation.” Elgersma said building with a chainsaw and his longing for the sea lead the way to his art. He was living and working in Minnesota at the time. His trade was constructing hand-crafted log cabins. Elgersma stated Minnesota was “void of the ocean” that he grew up next to in his home town of Cape May, New Jersey. To compensate, he sought out rivers and the banks of North Lake Superior for familiar seagulls and other comforting seaside sights. During one such trek after a historical weekend flood in Deluth, Elgersma discovered a river mouth piled high and dense with driftwood. He described the site as reminiscent of an “elephant bone yard.” “A spark went off,” said Elgersma. He picked up as many driftwood pieces as he could load in his truck and went to craving them. He said, “Three or four weeks later, I was in an art show, and they were all gone.” Elgersma shared from that moment on he travelled and continued salvaging driftwood and digging up stumps from remote beaches and river beds. Then, starting with just a kayak and a tent and then acquiring a 24-foot sailboat, Elgersma migrated to the Texas Gulf. His original intension was to make it to Florida to continue carving before finally returning home to Cape May. But while visiting with friends here in Texas, he saw all the driftwood and stayed. Elgersma said to carefully collect unique driftwood and stumps from very remote locations along the local shores, he uses a little skiff and a small rubber dingy to row across the muddy river mouths. Driftwood can be art on its own, but it can also resemble something. “I see something and capture it,” said Elgersma. He explained that his inclusion of the roots make his driftwood pieces different. “Roots work underground and move and turn. There is complete and total flow. Once that is interfused with water and currents, the flow is combined and merge into form,” he said. He explained that he tries his best to capture that form. He admitted he only gets one chance at carving driftwood, and that he hates to mess any up. Elgersma is craving roots as he eventually meanders the way back to his roots of Cape May, New Jersey. Luckily for the Bay Area, he is currently calling Texas home. Elgersma’s driftwood works are on display at Kemah Flowers & Company. Hikers, families invited to explore UHCL trail From the wetlands to the pond, to the breathtaking Marguerite Claghorn Nature Trail, the University of Houston-Clear Lake campus is home to beautiful landscapes and thriving wildlife. Students and community members are welcome to explore the 1.6 mile trail, located across the street from the university’s Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, 77058. Named after the assistant to UHCL’s first Chancellor Alfred Neumann, Marguerite Claghorn, the trail is tucked in the trees behind the university’s Bayou Building. The honor of naming it after Claghorn came ten years after her retirement at a May 1990 faculty and staff awards ceremony. Claghorn was well-known for walking the trail during her lunch break and admiring the armadillos, deer, spiders, raccoons and a variety of colorful birds that still populate the area. “The nice thing is that there is no telephone out here,” said Claghorn in a 1978 edition of the UHCLidian, the former name of the university’s student newspaper. The maintenance staff at UHCL works diligently mowing, removing debris and trash, trimming limbs and maintaining the signage along the trail. According to

Grounds Supervisor Sallie Andersen, the trail serves between 200 and 300 visitors annually, along with the occasional migrating song-bird or wild turkey.

then called University of Houston at Clear Lake City or UHCLC, the mere thought of succeeding Marguerite Claghorn was daunting, to say the least,” said Mary Ann Shallberg, Claghorn’s successor and current UHCL Executive Associate to the president.

UHCL students, community members and even area elementary schools use it as a place to explore, an outdoor classroom and a field trip destination — a level of activity and appreciation that Claghorn desired for the trail, as reported by the UHCLidian. Claghorn served as assistant to the chancellor from the university’s opening until her retirement in 1980. She also served on UHCL’s Women’s Association as the committee chairwoman, in charge of editing the newsletter and publicity and was a founding member of the Houston chapter of the League of Women Voters and of the Houston chapter of the United Nations Association. “When I first applied for the assistant to the chancellor position at what was

“To me she defined ‘Renaissance woman.’ She was well-versed on such a wide range of topics, from world affairs to international travel, and from nature and the environment to the arts. She was also a longtime member of Mensa. “I knew I could never be Marguerite, but was honored to have the opportunity to follow in her footsteps and continue the work she had begun at UHCLC with Chancellor Neumann.” Parking is available in the gravel lot near the trailhead. If parking gate is closed, guests can park in the university’s visitor lot located at the front of the Bayou Building for $5. There is still time to come out and race or just follow everybody around the race course for a great evening. Check out the GBCA website (www.gbca.org) for more information. Texas Race Week starts July 24, which consists of three days of offshore racing and awarding of the Texas Navy Cup. The Texas Navy Cup is determined by Lakewood Yacht Club’s “Heald Bank Offshore Regatta”, Houston Yacht Club’s “Offshore Regatta”, and GBCA’s Texas Race Week. The over-all winner of the Spinnaker Class also wins the Texas Navy Cup. Trophies also will be awarded in the Non-Spin and Cruising Classes. The first day of Texas Race Week will race out the Galveston Jetties, a reach down the beach to the Galveston Pleasure Pier to a mark just off the pier, then to a windward mark and back

On Tuesday, July 8, engage with wine vendors as they talk about the nuances of their wine while paired with tidbits from the kitchen. Take a step back in time for the ’70s and ’80s Disco Dance Night with DJ Bill Byous playing popular songs from the genre. Come dressed to impress on Saturday, July 5, and shake your groove thing.

Celebrate the competition with happyhour pricing all night.

On Thursday, July 31, it’s “Beer & Bites” at the bar. Along the lines of “Wine & Dine 101” but replaced with the magical ale called beer. There is even a “Whiskey 101.” And all aspiring comics should get their material ready for August because Comedy Night is back! Check the calendar online at TheCockAndBullBritishPub.com for a complete schedule of events and additional pertinent information like per person cost and space limitations. The Cock and Bull does a lot of cool things to break up the work week: “Trivia Nights” on Mondays begin at 8 p.m. The winner gets a prize! Enjoy the Happy Hour menu and drink specials all night. “Tipsy Tuesdays” coincides with Ladies’ Night, and it is “Open Mic Nights” on Wednesdays. “Thirsty Thursday” is the eve before the weekend and is a perfectly good reason to celebrate. On weekends, The Cock and Bull hosts live musical entertainment. The pub opens at 11 a.m. every day. For added convenience, complimentary valet service is available on many weekday evenings and weekend evenings. Come have a jolly good time at The Cock and Bull British Pub and Restaurant.

The oversized bar has comfortable chairs, flat screen TVs and is home base for R & R’s really generous happy “hour” drink specials daily until 7 p.m. featuring $2.25 wells, $2.75 domestic beers, and $2.50 domestic pints. Wednesday is “Ladies Night” and guests get happy hour specials all day. The drink specials are plentiful. On Sundays the Bloody Mary cocktails are $5 until 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays are “Manager Call Specials.” Yummy apple pie shots are only a buck each, and Natural Light pints and Hippie Juice are $2 while they last. Daily craft and beer specials poured into a 22-ounce mug are $4. On rotation are Santo’s, Fat Tire, Guinness, Killian’s Red, Bass, Black & Tan, Ranger IPA, Sierra Nevada, as well as the major beer brands. What better to go with cool drink specials than some hot food? R & R is open for lunch and dinner and the kitchen stays open late until 12:30 a.m. Order Super Bowl Wings (they are that good!), nachos, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, or the extensive appetizer Sampler Platter. To-go orders are welcome; call 281-996-8300. On the entertainment front, R & R hosts a DJ and karaoke every Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights at 9:30 p.m. and live music is scheduled on Fridays. “We have a good mix of musical genres,” said Dollery. “Our bands play everything from country to blues to funk, cover bands, and classic rock.”

A partial listing of the bands coming in July and August are: Fidelity Maxx (July 11), Rob Saint Revue (July 25), Paul Ramirez Band (August 1), and Texas TNT (August 8). And with R & R’s open concept, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Dollery has already been in the process of remodeling some aspects of the interior, and there is still more to come. He invites everyone to “come by and see what is different!” R & R is open seven days a week, and their hours of operation are Sundays from noon to 2 a.m., Mondays through Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. See their ad in this month’s issue for more specials and a complete live music line up. -------------------------------------Cat-O-Nine Tales • Cont. From Page 51 “Love Story” is a sorrowful tune filled with emotion and tells a tale of love found and then lost. For Borde, it actually applies to his personal experiences with falling in love as well as going through a divorce involving a child. “It has brought tears to the eyes of our audiences at concerts and our recent recording captures the feelings associated with the song perfectly,” he said. The last (but certainly not least) song on the CD has haunting melodies asking, “Why She Murda.” “Cat-O-Nine Tales” is a first-class effort from three of the most talented musicians in the Bay Area. Get it today. The album can be purchased at www.ThatCaptain.com and www.HoldFastFables.com and will be available soon on iTunes.

LOCAL BEER SCENE CONTINUES TO EXPLODE New Brewpubs & Beer Bars Open Locally With More Coming Soon As this issue was being wrapped up before heading to press the U.S. Soccer Team’s spirited World Cup run came to a heartbreaking end against Belgium. But this campaign was different not only because the American team went further and enjoyed better television ratings than in recent World Cups, but for the first time in Galveston County history, soccer fans could not only watch the match from area restaurants and bars, but from all three area brewpubs which featured the match live for fans to watch while enjoying some locally produced craft brew. This fact illustrates a new movement in the local craft beer scene with the area’s newest brewers choosing to sell as much of their beer as possible directly to the public for retail prices in their own establishments. Two of these brewpubs, Galveston Island Brewing and Texas Beer Refinery, have opened in recent weeks and Galveston Island Brewing wasted no time hosting thirsty patrons on-site. Located on the island at 8423 Stewart Road, Galveston Island Brewing built a really nice tap room that is open daily and has become popular enough that they already find themselves adding new fermentation tanks just to keep up with in-house demand. The “Tiki Wheat” has received a lot of praise although all the house offerings (The Scotsman, Ze German, Perdido Porter etc.) are very solid and highly recommended. Texas Beer Refinery is located in a warehouse park on the outskirts of Dickinson and hasn’t yet established regular hours for the public to visit but has hosted a few weekend events in addition to the final World Cup game for the US soccer team. According to a recent interview on the Drink Of Ages radio program, the Texas Beer Refinery is planning to quickly move to a more retail-friendly location in Kemah. - Continued on Next Page

LOCAL BEER SCENE EXPLODES: Continued From Previous Page But soon Galveston County won’t be alone on the local brewpub scene as at least two known groups are planning to open brewpubs in the Webster/Clear Lake area by the end of the year. Both Sirius Brewpub and Interstate Beer Co. are in deep in preparations and plan not only have their own house beer on tap but both have had preliminary discussions with the area’s only local production brewery, Galactic Coast Brewing, about carrying its beer on tap The newest beer bar on The as well. Likely the first to open, Sirius Brewpub SCENE is Tapology Gashas targeted a popular 6600-square-foot tropub located at 2660 Marestaurant space at the corner of NASA Road 1 rina Bay Drive in League City’s and Interstate 45 in Webster that has been many clubs and pubs since being home to Gal- South Shore Harbour area. lagher’s years ago. According to founder Bill Arning, the brewpub should open in October, possibly November, and will have 50 beers on tap including seven house beers brewered on-site in a 10-bbl brewhouse. According to co-founder Ferrell Ferguson, Interstate Beer Co. is already in possession of a 20-bbl brewhouse and focusing in on landing the perfect location. And there are rumors and evidence of at least two more brewpubs that could open in northern Galveston County by the end of the year making DRiNK Of AGES WhAT’S ON TAP 2014 likely the “Year News FM 92.1 KPRC 950AM of the Brewpub.” 7-8 p.m. Saturdays 3 p.m. Sundays

RAILEAN RUM expands its facilities in San Leon By Rhonda Meredith To meet growing demand for its liquor, Eagle Point Distillery, located at 341 5th Street in sunny San Leon, is expanding its facilities. It’s home to where RAILEAN® Handcrafted American Rum™, the first and only rum certified "MADE in USA" is manufactured. The tentative completion date is for the end of July. “It’s an exciting time for us,” said Kelly Railean, a Master Distiller and the company’s founder and namesake. Railean broke ground in March 2014 on a 3600-square-foot facility that is being constructed next to their original space. Half of the new building will house the Buccaneer Bar and gift shop. The other 1800 square feet will be used for barrel storage and the relocation and expansion of the bottling line.

Enjoy cocktails made with Railean spirits at the full-size bar when it opens. Be sure to think ahead and reserve space for an upcoming special event. LOOSE NOTES • Continued From Page 44 The turnout this year was in great form for this Galveston County Food Bank fundraising event and the Scout Bar Staff was utmost taking care of everybody. All this mention aside, the event has solidified to one where people who sometimes only get a chance to cross paths at these shindigs making it a reunion of sorts - for music lovers covering the widest spectrum of genres never meeting otherwise, which good people, is pretty dang cool... Yes? Kudos to all who helped make the event happen – Before, during, after, and to become... IT’S A WRAP – Wow, what a run! This month, it took about everything we had to keep up with you, and with that, we’re going to take some time to enjoy friends and family in this cool place we live, America and the Bay Area... Give me a hand please, and do what you do: Getting out there, lighting it up, firing it up, and living it up. Thanks! We’ll see you out there on the SCENE!

NEW GIG ALERT – Well, actually they’ve been doing it awhile, but the folks at Punk Star have a weekly gig happening at Scout Bar: Full Throttle Night complete with live broadcast interviews, incredibly good live music,

the crowd moving in a way that probably in part created the roll of today’s modern DJ. Opening for this band from Chicago via LA was our own Erase The Virus whom has a following that always gets what they want to hear but this night for me, was different with ETV adding Jessica Perry (The Scars Heal In Time and Vanilla Sugar) to the fold. Electronically, Jessica held her spot

and creating an excitement that’s unique, bringing in guests from all around the greater Houston metro area, which good people, reaches a heck of a way! Their broadcasts can be seen on locallivehouston.com and is Chris Hardy & Co. hosted by Khris Hard@ Scout Bar ing & Chris Calderas.

OVER THE TOP – We don’t give these out too often, but this month, happy to mention the Will Play For Food, Volume III for taking us there. Through the course of the 8-hour event (yup, we where there for the stretch), we heard 15 bands let it all hang out with a zest roosted solidly in magical territory.

down very well with the boys and perhaps the most intriguing moment came when she and Chris shared vocals on a back & forth that had a witty, gritty cleverness about it that got me thinking Paradise By The Dashboard Lights. Gonna have to mark ETV as a band to follow-up with this possible development.

dear to me. Fast forward a year later and one of the bands there, Andy and The Dreamsicles, are still at it – A Sunday night, the next day a work day, yet packing the house and having a blast partying away. In the month of June, we witnessed them do it again, this time at Claudio’s. But then, we’ve been seeing the Dreamsicles do just that on countless summertime Sundays since we first happened upon the SCENE at the old Sundance Grill in Seabrook. It’s nice seeing bands who make people smile and laugh. When they do that at each and every show, you know they’ve got a good thing going. And speaking of which, I’d like to add Zone 504 to that call. Zone 504 is one interesting

Also in the crowd were Mr. and Mrs. V, hosts of the Sunday morning Blues on the Move (Sunday 8 to 11 a.m. hosted along with their sidekicks Nancy and Buddy Love), an eclectic blues program that covers all genres of the blues but concentrates on soul blues, female-based blues and local and Texas based artists. You never know just who you’ll meet at T-Bone’s... The Gulf Coast Organ Trio at Katie’s on a Wednesday night was an awesome treat – Not too many Hammond B3’s complete with Leslies are out there these days, and, boy, did it sound sweet. After my earlier visit to the Continental Club, I simply can’t say enough how well we have it with Bob and Katie always bringing in quality music night after night, an enjoyable setting to catch the shows, and never a cover! The Cock & Bull show of Eisle, Shannon and Wolf is an interesting mention not just be-

place where the night crowds on weekends are always young and fun. But when you’ve been at it for as long as they have, and start having Sunday all-age events for the regulars (and in this case, it was their Hello Summer, Good-bye Crawfish Festival complete with Mark Lum & Friends on the indoor stage), you know you’ve reached the level of being considered a “neighborhood bar,” a worthy title, no matter the SCENE. Well done! TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE – And this month, it was out of curiosity we ventured to Scout Bar for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult which treated us to musing videos along the lines of Hank 3 and Pink Floyd, and with an electronic funky disco that had

cause we got a chance to hear Hank play the trap (which was an evening of clever presentation in itself), but the boys took it back to the ‘20s & ‘30s playing the music that caught not just our ears, but according to Wikipedia, that of Eric Clapton, whose first songs he ever learned reportedly were of that era and genre. Not sure if Eisle, Shannon & Wolff will be living the life of Clapton anytime soon, but we appreciate getting to experience those sounds at The Cock & Bull. SUNDAY FUNDAY – About a year ago on the last Sunday in June was a gathering of musicians at the Cock-Eyed Seagull (with one of the best ACs in Clear Lake) that was very near and

describes themselves as a “maximum British Invasion and U.S. Rock & Roll band” and scored a Houston Press nomination for Best Cover Band of the year and lead guitarist Chase Hamblin scored two nominations for Musician of the Year and Best Pop Artist – Not too shabby!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR – We ventured into town in June to celebrate the 29th birthday of David Blassingame, ring leader of the annual Fab 40 show. David tells us that this year’s annual gig at Discovery Green will be October 4 and feature the Beatle’s album, “Revolver,” arguably one of their finest productions ever. Save the date! The party went down at the Continental Club with Picture Book on stage holding down the weekly Friday Night house band honors. Lead vocalist Ryan Guidry is no stranger to the SCENE, whom we first met at the Clifton’s Music Festival. Ryan will be opening for Kansas at the annual Baytown July 4th party in the park along with another local favorite, 4-Barrel Ramblers. Pretty cool, eh? Picture Book

MIXED BOIL – Rewind to when Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack first opened. We stopped in to try out the menu; and I was impressed with the selection and went with a pound of everything. David Schwope was on stage and the weekend was nothing short of perfect. In June, we stopped into the Swamp Shack again, and the place was packed with families enjoying great seafood eats, and – to our delight – David Schwope was on the stage. Some good things never change! THE BLUES – Is something we all need from time to time. Some can never get enough. In June, we caught some of the finest in blues at T-Bone Tom’s with The Big Cletus Blues Experience Big Cletus Blues Experience; & Little Terry @ T-Bone Tom's Katie’s with the Gulf Coast Organ Trio; and at The Cock & Bull with Donn Eisle, Steve Shannon and Hank Wolff. Cletus, a longtime instructor at Danny’s Guitar Hacienda, has assembled “A butt-rockin’, jumpin’ and thumpin’ blues band composing of a rotating roster of Blues All-Stars,” which we can indeed testify is true. We saw Cletus with Little Terry Rogers sharing the stage on the harp at T-Bone’s – which for us, was an enjoyable reunion. The last time we had crossed paths was during the IkeFest series – some of you should remember.

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

The summer solstice has come and gone and once again. This is our time here on beloved Texas Gulf Coast – on the live music SCENE. The month flew by blisteringly fast and right on cue, many of you were out there making it happen. You – Folks – are incredible! Here’s a quick rundown of some of what we were able to catch.

things up here on our Texas Gulf Coast – makes sense when you think about it. After all, Kemah *IS* the place where the breezes come together. Speaking of outdoor breezy summer weather, we caught up with Wood & Wind on the outdoor stage at Jackie B’s in June. Like many of us on the SCENE, these two like it outside during the summer months and will be playing out a bit more with promises to fire back up their regular indoor open mic this autumn. One spot on the SCENE still carrying an open mic this summer is at the Cock-eyed Seagull on Thursday nights hosted by Cisco. The daytime job can sometimes get exhausting and being able to recharge by recapturing one’s downbeat and groove is key. Some good live music is a medicine many doctors wish they could prescribe, ’cuz it works. Why see a doctor? Go catch a live local music show near you. Got it?

WHERE EAST MEETS WEST – It happened in June at TBone Tom’s during the Pirates & Poets show, hosted by Jerry Diaz. Guest performers for the T-Bone’s house included Sunny James White from Florida and Bob Karwin from San Diego serving up an evening of Parrot Head pleasing originals. Bringing in performers from both coasts at the same time to mix

While you are out getting your groove on, may I suggest some Andrew Bateman when you can on the SCENE? It’s been nearly a year since we’ve crossed paths with this one-man show, perhaps a bit too long. These days, Andrew packs along three different axes and ably mixes each into a single song. We caught up with Andrew at The Cock & Bull this month where tables of food, served piping hot, were simply sitting and getting cold as patrons would stop what they were doing and watch the Minister of Music play. - Continued on Page 46

Captain Marc Borde's Hold Fast Fables “Cat-O-Nine Tales” CD Is Out Now By Rhonda Meredith Captain Marc Borde's Hold Fast Fables tells tales through its organic sound. The three-part vocal harmonies are enhanced with a melodic cello, acoustic guitar, and light percussion that accompanies lyrics portraying love, loss, and island life. “Claire Sieverman, Matthew Beard and I played live shows for over a year perfecting the vocal harmonies, melodies and rhythms of these songs that mean so much to me,” said Marc Borde, local singer, songwriter, musician, and founder of the trio. “We took our time with the recording; took no shortcuts; and with the assistance of producers Jonathan Chan and Dan Workman of Sugar Hill Studios, refined the songs even further, resulting in what I believe is my best musical work to date.”

Check out our WILL PLAY FOR FOOD III Photo Spread on Pages 16 & 17

The result is an impressive array of folk and reggae music on

their first studio album. The nine original songs on “Cat-O-Nine Tales” showcase the incredible talent of its band members. The first track is a catchy tune, or rather a story, called “Sailor & The Mermaid.” It is followed by “The Island” which is inspired from an incident at a Bay Area bar where the local police almost shut the show down. Borde penned the lyrics after considering the situation of “being run out of town when you raise too much ruckus.” In “Free His Soul,” the cello is the star of the song. “Smashin’” mentions “G-Town” more than once in this swinging reggae song. Next is the up-tempo melody of “The Captain.” “Issues” is a very relatable song since we all know someone that has them! “Tough Motherf**ker” is full of strong rhythms and will have you up and moving. - Continued on Page 37

Signature Drinks: Prepared by Zak at the

MONKEY BAR PINK CADILLAC – Named in honor of the King of Rock and Roll. The basis of this legendary drink is Three Olives® Elvis Presley™ Coconut Water Flavored Vodka. It is an incredible blend of imported English vodka and the natural taste of fresh coconut water. Add the crisp and refreshing DeKuyper’s Watermelon Pucker schnapps, a splash of cranberry juice, and Sprite. Put a wedge of lime for a contrasting colored garnish. Take one sip, and you’ll get all shook up! MONKEY JUICE – Great adult beverages come in small glasses – Shot glasses, that is! Get ship shape with Captain Morgan Rum, Malibu Caribbean Rum with Natural Tropical Banana Liqueur, pineapple juice, and a touch of sweet and sour. The signature shot will have you swinging from the trees in no time at all. MONKEY PUNCH – Take the sweet, tropical flavor of Malibu’s Coconut Rum. Its taste is reminiscent of coconut, almonds and a touch of mocha. Mix with the smooth and delicious flavor of DeKuyper® Créme De Banana, and the signature molasses character of Myer's Original Dark Rum. Add a swift pour of cranberry and pineapple juices. Garnish with a cherry and a slice of orange. Let the drink set for just a moment, and it will have a layered appearance.

Experience. Danny has 9 years experience bartending at Katie’s. His official title is “Bar Manager,” and he enjoys meeting all the wonderful people who come to the bar. Go out and visit him during the weekdays! “Just One More...” He says he can make practically any drink, but his favorite drink to make is “Just One More!” Sports Fan. Danny is a fan of Texas teams. And yes – for all you inquiring minds – he DOES like BOTH the Texans and Cowboys football teams. He does think the Texans are up for “a very good season.” Summer Lovin’. The laid back bartender likes summertime and enjoys the water and fishing. Favorite Music? Oh, yeah! Blues, country, jazz, and classic rock… Just no Frank Sinatra. Danny enjoys the bands at Katie’s like No Refund Band, JJ Dynomite, Benny Brasket, Alan Haynes and Holland K. Smith. Favorite TV shows? He watches C.S.I., Persons of Interest, or anything along the lines of

the criminal genre. When Not At Katie’s: Danny likes to cook. His specialty is to barbecue pork loins. (The secret is in the rub.) You May Not Know… The local resident likes home improvement projects. Danny also loves pets. He takes care of a cat that Katie’s has adopted. Oh, and he plays a pretty mean jukebox, too!

COCK & BULL BRITISH PUB hosts the 2014 JAMES BOND BALL: “DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER” By Rhonda Meredith The Cock and Bull British Pub, located at 3659 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, is hosting the 2014 James Bond Ball: “Diamonds Are Forever” on Saturday, July 26. The elaborate theme party includes an extensive dinner buffet (roast prime rib dinner with all the treats, chicken, fish, plentiful side dishes and decadent desserts), a martini bar to purchase drinks, live music (Wood N Wind and Bruce Courtney), and dancing with music extraordinaire Bill Byous. Guests will enjoy their very own Casino Royale (blackjack, roulette, and craps) and be able to take home some fun raffle prizes at the end of the night for the winning tickets.

to the Walkers, customer service is paramount at The Cock and Bull. They aim to please and boast 18 different beers on tap in which five are British (Boddington's Pub Ale, Guinness, Murphy's Irish Stout, Fuller's London Pride, and a pear cider) and more than 40 plus craft beers are available for your imbibing pleasure. The brand selection and flavors that lovingly flow from the tap will vary. Just know that once a specialty beer has “tapped” out, it’s gone and another brilliant brew will take its place. The lesson to learn is to visit Cock and Bull’s establishment often so you won’t miss out. Just as the beer offerings change on a frequent basis, so does the wine – and plenty of unique and satisfying tastes are in stock.

Seating begins at 7 p.m. Come in character to maximize the fun. There will be a contest for best-dressed and most creative costumes. Attend the ball for only $75 per person (plus tax and gratuity).

Speaking of tastes, British chef John Blythe prepares a “True Brit Brunch” on Sundays that is served until 4 p.m. Food choices include a traditional British breakfast as well as other British foods. This is “fun” dining, not “fine” dining the Walkers assured us. The delectable menu features British culinary favorites like Fish and Chips, Shepherd’s Pie, and Bangers and Mash. The Pub is also a family-friendly place, so ‘no worries’ with bringing the little ones along for dinner!

Please note that the pub will be closed to regular activity on this Saturday (July 26) only. Cock and Bull’s owners David and Jeanette Walker hail from Australia and England and have been members of the Bay Area community for decades now. They strive for outstanding customer service and an authentic British experience within a pub designed to invoke feelings with its atmosphere. Since opening in early 2012, The Cock and Bull has welcomed patrons into the pub’s fun and distinctly British atmosphere.
