Who Will Be King & Queen of Clear Lake? Krewe Du Lac King’s Cake Party • 2pm, Sunday, January 9 at Crazy Alan's Cajun Shack Krewe du Lac prepares for another outstanding season. 2011 is their second decade as the premier Clear Lake Mardi Gras Krewe. Although the Krewe is proud to call Kemah home, participants hail from all parts of Bay Area Houston and beyond. Known as "The Pirate Krewe," the 2011 theme celebrates "Pirates of the Vieux Carre," also know as The French Quarter of New Orleans! According to Annabelle Ruch, Prime Minister of the Krewe, "The pirate theme is a perfect fit for our area. Pirates combed these shores for years. It is rumored there is still buried treasure within reach." This is 11th consecutive year of Mardi Gras celebration for Krewe du Lac. Their goal is to promote a familystyle observance of the season. Anyone can join in the fun. It is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the cultural, educational and traditional customs of Mardi Gras and to provide information, guidance and activities to any individuals and groups interested in the similar pursuit.

The season starts with the annual King’s Cake Party. It is held on Sunday, January 9th at Crazy Alan's Cajun Shack in Kemah at 2 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. Everyone is invited to enjoy a piece of King's

The outgoing 2010 King and Royal Court Cake, a traditional New Orleans French pastry. Each year a new King is recognized for his contributions to the Krewe and the community. The Queen is chosen in the traditional King’s Cake fashion. All the participating ladies of the Krewe are given a lottery ticket. Only five numbers are drawn and each of those lucky ladies will receive a special piece of King's Cake. The lady who finds the tiny toy baby hidden in her cake becomes the Queen. The other lovelies become her Royal Court.

Bucks New Year’s Eve Event (dubbed: Buck’s & Boca Tanning Club’s Black Tie Affair) “gives all you beautiful women the opportunity to wear that perfect dress. It also makes it extremely easy for you men to put on your best James Bond tuxedo.” Black tie is suggested, but it is not mandatory; however, an event of this sort doesn't lend itself to casual attire. So put on your best, and come help us say goodbye to 2010, and hello 2011. The Party starts early, so plan on a long night. What to expect: 1. Fun surprises all night like random $1 drink specials called throughout the night by Buck. 2. VJ/DJ’s playing your favorite videos and recounting 2010’s Number 1’s. 3. Loose Notes by Andy Eng Last month we reported checking out what's new when things go wacky and this month we continue. Starting on the Clear Lake Blvd stretch, we stopped by the Allegria Wine Bar, The Davenport, and The Cellar Wine Bar. Each of these cozy The Hunger @ Scout Bar’s Annual little hideaways are ideal for hanging out and Pre-Thanksgiving Day Party up close conversation. The two wine bars also provided live music--Jazz musician Ronnie Stallworth and acoustic soloist Raquel Refuerzo, both talented regional musicians, we found both perfect for the setting. Down on NASA Road One, the former Club Classic zipped through a quick make over and is now called CABO. Falling into our idea of a classy neighborhood sports bar with the good live music connections to boot (Big Richard, Cold Feet, & 11th Hour kicked off their opening month)--All good here! Along the 2094 beat, Jackie's Brickhouse has been tearing down the Ronnie Stallworth @ Allegria walls and the result is one of the larger music Wine & Cocktail Lounge venues in the area making this an even better spot for acts with larger HED PE followings. Speaking of which, The @ Scout Tail Draggers and their army stopped Bar in for a couple sets of The Hunger @ Scout Bar "jump blues backwoods swampwater jazz." “Lady Luck” is smiling on Dean Seltzer & The Redneck Mothers By Rhonda Meredith

– only kidding. I have been to many of the shows and they are all unique. One performance may include improvised drink specials for the venue or impromptu VIP sections on the dance floor; another show will have a fire breathing demonstration and many toasts emphasizing the fondness of adult beverages. Really ALL shows have the last example. The band is sponsored by Jägermeister.

Dean Seltzer is an original, a modern renaissance man, a Cowboys fan (c’mon – keep reading!) and a very talented singer/songwriter/musician. He is a fifth generation Texan with a personality that’s as large as… well, Texas! Did you know that July 25, 2010 was declared as “Dean Seltzer Day” in Galveston, TX by VIP Apparel? Well, now you do! The latest offering from the Austin based Dean Seltzer and his band The Redneck Mothers is “Lady Luck.” Don’t let the word “redneck” in the band’s name fool you. Even Seltzer describes his music as “high energy, obnoxious, redneck rock and roll.” I just think the music is a combination of “high energy” and “rock and roll” then rolled around in a little red dirt for good measure.

The bottom line is it’s a rock show on a country stage.

“Lady Luck” contains 11 songs. The first two singles were “Anyway” and “Gen X.” Following the same “get outta your chair and dance” recipe are songs “Version of The Truth”, the title track “Lady Luck”, “Round Town Jack” and “No Way No How.” And while all the songs are well written and composed, “Beatle Song” and “Meteor Shower” are my two favorites. On the slower side, “Long Cold Nights”, “Huntsville (Life on Death Row)” and “Please Come to Boston” are both haunting and paint life in the painful, but beautiful way it is. Shelli Coe (David Alan Coe’s daughter) provided the harmony vocals. The songs on the CD were definitely meant to be performed live. What you hear that is summarized on your CD player as Track 1 and Track 2 and so on are brought alive with the heartfelt vocals, superior musical talent and of course, the calamity onstage. Sometimes pretty, sometimes not. Haha

Recently I purchased a CD single for one of their signature songs called “Lovin’ You.” It is neither a typical radio friendly song nor your typical breakup song, but the lyrics are fun and everyone sings the chorus really, really loud. Obviously, it’s a fan favorite. Go to YouTube and search “dean seltzer lovin’ you.” The second video is it and don’t worry about the video’s title – it’s the alternate name of the song – shhhh! Dean Seltzer and The Redneck Mothers are David Watkins (guitar, vocals), Adrian Flores (drums), Andy Garcia (bass) and of course Dean Seltzer (vocals, acoustic guitar). It’s Easy To “Embrace” EMBER By Rhonda Meredith Modern rock band EMBER has always impressed me. From the first time I watched them tear it up on the Jägermeister stage at the Rockstar Uproar Music festival in The Woodlands to the time where they brought an intimate performance to Softails in Baytown. EMBER has also been the featured band at Scout Bar during the Texas Buzz show. Most recently, the band has been on the road to Tennessee, Kansas, Arizona, and throughout other Texas cities before heading back to their home base in Austin. Aside from regional and national touring, EMBER is a part of the Armed Forces Entertainment program and has toured in Greece, Spain, Germany, Qatar and other American military bases as direct support for Hinder in 2008 and as headliners in a 2009 tour. Their song “American Hero” quickly became a favored anthem. Not a bad gig from a band that came from humble beginnings and were originally called “Small Town Superheroes.” I almost forgot to mention that EMBER’s fans voted them into the winner’s spot this past October to be the local opening band for Collective Soul, Gin Blossoms, and Tonic at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock!

SCENE CD REVIEW THE SCENE

EMBER’s latest CD is “Embrace.” With seven quality tracks to choose from, it’s hard to pick the “best” one. They are all very, very good. EMBER is consistent in offering heartfelt vocals and a full melodic sound. The songs range from edgy to downright poignant. The first single “The Deep End” was successfully released to both Christian and Mainstream radio. Football legend Jim Kelley’s wife Jill used this song in a video raising awareness for her foundation called Hunter’s Hope. I guess if I HAD to pick a favorite song on the album, it would be the second released single and title track “Embrace”. It takes DAYS to get this song out of my head. Just listen to it…all the way to the piano finish and you will see what I mean. Rounding out the CD are “Give A Little” and “#1 Fan”. Both are steady hard rocking songs that get you up and moving. “On My Own” has an unusual beginning and the composition is pretty unique as it changes tempo several times before giving in to an insane electric guitar solo. - Continued on Page 52

Kemah’s Mardi Gras Krewe announces 2011 dates including ‘KREWES INTO KEMAH’ weekend Krewe du Lac and The City of Kemah will present the Ninth Annual Krewes Into Kemah" Parade and Carnival on Sunday, March 6, 2011. Line up starts at 11 a.m. on Harris Street in Kemah behind T Bone Tom's. The parade rolls at 12 p.m. All individuals, schools, groups and businesses are encouraged to decorate trucks, cars, floats, golf carts and anything that rolls in Pirate decor or Mardi Gras colors. The parade winds through the streets of Kemah while merry makers have a great time throwing beads and loot to the crowds. Texas Hippie Connection celebrates good vibes at new location The Texas Hippie Connection just recently moved to a new location and will be holding their grand opening festivities on Saturday, December 4th around 3pm-ish. (That’s an inside joke since their official hours are posted as opening at 10am-ish.) You can’t miss the new building located at 2234 Nasa Parkway (at the corner of Seventh Street.) It’s painted bright purple, green and black. Plus, there is a huge new cool sign. There will be a glass blowing demonstration by a world renowned blower named Midas. Plus, artist Clay Brothers will awe you with his twisted wood designs. Local tattoo legend Chicken Wing will also be in attendance holding an on-site tattoo expo. If that isn’t enough, Texas Hippie Connection is also down for barbeque and baked goods. Live music will be provided by Houston’s own Footpie as well as Sun Salutation out of Austin. Both of the bands represent the best funky, hip, hard-jammin’ reggae and funk that Texas has to offer. Do not miss them! It's not within us to quit." - EUPHILIA A band starts with a dream and adds tenacity. They write lyrics and add hard rocking music that brings in a crowd of supporters. They bring energy and the live performance is consistent enough to earn them repeated spots supporting national acts. Now meet EUPHILIA. EUPHILIA is one of the Houston area’s most tenacious bands… They perform headlining shows all over Houston and are regularly seen at Scout Bar supporting national acts. The latest two were Rehab and Nonpoint. The Scene Magazine caught up with EUPHILIA’s lead singer Jordan Applebe to get the scoop about their history, EUPHILIA’s unique name and how important the band’s supporters are to them.

According to Applebe, EUPHILIA started several years back with drummer Bryan Murillo and guitarist Jared Harvey. Kevin Diaz (guitar) and Carlos Hidalgo (bass) rounded out the lineup. They played instrumental party gigs, but wanted more. They knew the band needed a singer and posted an advertisement. “At the same time, I was searching for a band to front,” Applebe says. “Almost as if it were serendipity, literally within five minutes of the ad being posted, I set up an audition and after coming out to sing a couple of times, the band decided to let me join. I am sitting there clueless and my friend explained that it was a military tradition…whoever didn’t have their coin to be presented was responsible for buying the round of drinks. El Lago shares their police department with Taylor Lake Village (called Lakeview Police Department) and contributes 17% to the Seabrook Volunteer Fire Department’s budget enabling El Lago to have an accessible fire department. Even though just one square mile, El Lago made sure there would be plenty of park space for its citizens. Witty Memorial Park, named after former El Lago mayor Robert D. Witty, is located on Hickory Ridge Drive, is outfitted with playground equipment for the younger set, and a bench was recently added in memory of former Mayor Elizabeth Lenoir. Armstrong Park, of course, is named after former El Lago resident and astronaut Neil Armstrong. It is the newest member of the park system and is located east of City Hall. McNair Memorial, the largest park, and named after Space Shuttle Challenger Astronaut Ronald McNair, is located at the north end of Lakeshore Drive. With large-scale play equipment, this park has undergone major improvements and contains covered picnicking areas, a bicycle-BMX track and baseball field, and an open-air pavilion. But an even bigger facility for this park is on the drawing board. “Council just approved plans for a 6,000 sq. ft., 1.7 million dollar building

(approximate figures) that will house a community center, fitness center, bath house and other amenities,” says Emel, “and we are in the process of interviewing architects.” Emel adds that it will raise taxes a bit, but will be worth it. A name has not been chosen for the new center and Emel is hoping to find a sponsor for the facility soon. Other than parks, another important criteria for this city is trees. “We’re constantly planting trees and this month (in participation with Taylor Lake Village) we are going to be giving free trees to any of our citizens who want them,” says Emel. It is mainly to help those who lost trees to Hurricane Ike, plus trees are beneficial for air quality and certainly dress up the neighborhood. Emel’s vision is that El Lago and Taylor Lake Village eventually join together and become one city. “We could call it Taylor Lake City,” he says. “Then we’d be known as TLC, and have a big sign that says, ‘Everybody needs a little TLC.’” Economically it makes a huge amount of sense says Emel, but like he says, it’s a vision. Saying that El Lago may one day look like West University in Houston (with tasteful new construction springing up as older homes come down), Emel is just happy to be a part of a township where everyone knows not only his name but everyone else’s too. The El Lago Astronaut Wall of Fame is located inside El Lago City Hall and includes a roster of astronauts who were or are residents of El Lago at the time of their flights into space. Film Column: Continued From Page 31 On our last shooting day, we began at 8:30 p.m. I was on set most of the day before taking a Krewe du Lac party bus to RenFest in the morning. Sipping Bloody Mary's on the long drive, falling asleep wasn't an option. I was lucky to catch ten minutes during a fierce jousting session at the festival. On the ride home I was far too amped up to nod off. And then, immediately as we landed back in the Clear Lake area, my partner in crime and I were off to the wrap party for the movie. That span of time, like most of production, was a complete blur – and I'm the better man for it! Now, in the final month of the year, I intend to focus on other projects I'm involved in, future endeavors and wrapping out the year. Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced a day before I turned in this article; and LOVERS OF HATE made the list – it's up for the John Cassavetes Award. Our official ribbon cutting at the Texas Theatre takes place on

-------------------Columnist’s Note: I am truly honored that I am mentioned in this book “Seabrook,” (Chapter 6: Happenings & Events) regarding some of the events I was privileged to bring to Seabrook and the existing ones that I coordinated and promoted as former Marketing & Tourist Director for the City of Seabrook. Ruth and I enjoyed creating an event – the Gulf Coast Seabrook Photo Workshops, an annual three-day weekend event with photographers from all over Texas coming to our waterfront playground to photograph the beauty all around us. They were our “ambassadors,” taking to their hometown and businesses photos of our water, birds, boats and more. Ruth made sure everyone left Seabrook with gallery-style art from those weekends. Starting as a long-time photo journalist using film and following dark room procedures to learning the “new” digital camera when they first came out, Ruth was there to teach me as well as the next student. I literally took thousands of photos when employed by the City of Seabrook, and am I proud that some of those are in the book documenting pieces of current happenings. I will always treasure that little piece of me in the book to pass on to my children and grandchildren, and I will treasure the autographed book like a friend. I appreciate Ruth and Don for taking on this big and worthy project.

Houston's own Ron Jackson, who played a key supporting role in TPD will be making the trip with me and serve as a special guest, given his portrayal of the FBI Spokesman in Oliver Stone's “JFK.” Additionally, there will be guest appearances from Gary Mack, curator for the Sixth Floor Museum, and Henry “Hank” Horn, Jr. – one of the first officers on the scene at the Texas Theatre to arrest Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963. I'll be back in Dallas to usher in the new year, as we're hosting a New Year's Eve party – “NYE: 1931” – at the Texas. Featuring the comic stylings of Neil Hamburger and authentic 1930s era music from the Singapore Slingers, party-goers will catch a glimpse of life at the Texas in the 1930s. Between now and then, I plan to catch as many outdoor screenings of classic holiday films at Discovery Green as I can. I also plan to sit back and relax as much as possible – and you should too!

Bright lights and boats of all kinds will meet December 11 at 6 p.m. for Texas’ 49th Annual Christmas Boat Lane Parade on Clear Lake, hosted by the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade will line up in the Nassau Bay Lagoon and South Shore Harbour, travel the channel past Seabrook and the Kemah Boardwalk out into the Bay and return. These beautifully decorated sail and power boats will dazzle and entertain thousands of spectators with their brightly colored lights, music and designs. Some boats will be decorated traditionally and others will look very unique. That's a Wrap on THE PREACHER'S December Film Events DAUGHTER... And 2010. First Thursdays at Dean's Credit Clothing For six long weeks THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER film took over Houston, Alvin and the Clear Lake area. Despite falling two weeks behind and suffering drastic changes in crew, we managed to pull it off and get the darn thing in the can – and it looks amazing to boot!

Production problems are bound to happen on any film set – it just comes with the territory. With lots of moving parts and moving people, bumps and bruises are inevitable. In the case of TPD, the bumps were a little more common and the bruises a little more painful. When the first day's work was actually shot in two days, we knew we'd be playing catchup for the duration of the shoot. But not all the problems were related to schedule. Instead, they were sometimes minor inconveniences that led to major delays. Instances beyond our control, like a rainout on a day scheduled entirely outside or the generator shutting down half-way through a night shoot. At one point, it seemed like the entire cast and crew had caught the same illness and due to the nature of “catching up” we were all constantly exhausted, scrambling just to complete the day, and more prone to making erroneous decisions. All that being said, the collaborative effort of the film set as a whole fought to finish this film and finish it right. As production ebbed and flowed, the movie became something greater than we'd all anticipated from the beginning. Exceeding our expectations, the production value will serve the film greatly as we move forward into post-production. Throughout the course of production, lots of other great things were happening with my films that I was unable to be present for. AU-

The day after my birthday (which I celebrated on set), I flew to France to rep EARTHLING at Utopiales in Nantes, France – a wise decision as no one else could make it and we ended up winning the festival. It was a welcomed break but I was eager to get back into the movie upon my return.

ARTS “SEABROOK” - A Book of History By Photographer Ruth Burke UNIQUE GIFT IDEA FOR THE SEASON! By Domino Taylor A new gift to the Clear Lake community is a book about the town of Seabrook, appropriately called “Seabrook.” The historically rich book is a photographic retrospective published as part of the Arcadia Publishing “Images of America” series. The publishing company selected local Seabrook artist and photographer, Ruth Burke, to compile the photos and write the captions. Ruth, a well known photographer has now added author to her bio. She took on the duty documenting Seabrook’s amazing growth, prosperity and turmoil of the city, with information dating back to the 1800s. Seabrook, currently known for its beautiful lakes, hiking trails, quaint shops, cozy bed-and-breakfasts, birding and boating community has significant historic roots. From toils of the Attakapas and Karankawas Indian tribes to the treasure-laden tales of the French pirate Jean Lafitte, it has many interesting sections, including the town’s beginnings as a Spanish land grant, to the purchase by Seabrook Sydnor in 1895 to the coming of NASA. Seabrook has been home to hunters, explorers, tradesmen and land barons. This book details the unique history that makes it an interesting read. From the tribal beginnings, tales of pirates and the pioneer spirit, Ruth has managed to capture the beauty and history of Seabrook in this handsome book that displays the charm and vitality of the area. Owner of the Seaside Gallery where she sells photographic art and provides custom framing services, Burke has been a resident of Seabrook since the 1970s. “I have thoroughly enjoyed living in this community,” said Burke. “I am

pleased to play a part in documenting Seabrook’s past and present, sharing its natural treasures through pictures.” She continued modestly, “I felt an obligation to the community to do this, since I have a large collection of photos I have taken since the 1970s.” Although Burke had amassed a large collection of her own professional photographs of the area, she turned to Seabrook City Councilman, Don Holbrook, for help. Collaborating on another project (the park kiosks project) which are displayed around the city, Holbrook was instrumental in assisting Burke in the extensive research needed to acquire older photos. “We began this remarkable project in November 2009,” said Holbrook. “It is great to see this effort come to fruition, giving readers the opportunity to venture back to the early days when this community was just forming.” Don grew up in Seabrook and attended school locally and taught later in years as an aide at Clear Lake High. His father was also a city councilman for Seabrook in the 1970s. It was not easy to produce this book of more than 200 photos photos, especially after the effects of Hurricane Ike, when so many of the town’s residents were displaced and long-time citizens’ historical photos and albums were destroyed. But people came out to gather and clean, and restore the old photos making this another community project built on pride. One case of dedication to the history in photos is when Ruth and longtime Seabrook resident Pokie Platzer-Stamper found photos just after Ike of the town’s first school and the 1930 school fire. - Continued on Page 50

10th Annual Reach for the Stars Gala The Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Gala Committee hosted the prestigious Annual Reach for the Stars Gala. The “Shining Stars” Gala was held on Saturday, November 6 at the San Luis Resort in Galveston. Guests who attended this event enjoyed a savory dinner, bid on exciting auctions, and were entertained by the Mickey Hobbs Trio. A special feature of the evening was the recognition of outstanding alumni from Clear Creek ISD and notable individuals who have made a difference with their support of public education and the District. Wendy Shaw, gala chairman, and Lisa Holbrook, cochairman, along with the Shining Stars Gala Committee, created a Hollywood-themed event. Each year, the committee welcomes businesses, organizations and individuals to consider helping sponsor this Gala, either through underwriting the event, purchasing an ad in the program or through donations for the auctions.

The Clear Creek Education Foundation, established in 1992, is comprised of business and community leaders; all of whom volunteer to raise funds to support the academic achievement of all students. Proceeds from the gala help to fund the following programs: Teacher Innovative Instructional Grants, Synergistic Career Exploration Labs, National Board Teacher Certification and the Clear Horizons Early College High School program currently underway at San Jacinto Community College. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded grants worth more than $800,000 to CCISD teachers.

Jeanette Williams Foundation Teams With Yachty Gras To Make Christmas Brighter for Children Treated At UTMB Edgewater Development Opens Doors for Toy Drive The Jeanette Williams Foundation teamed up lact month with Yachty Gras at Edgewater Development's model home on West Fork for a Toy Drive for children being treated at UTMB. Johnson Development's Jamie Virkus welcomed guests who had been asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for a child aged from newborns to 16 years old.

Foundation. "Tonight we gathered about 50 gifts, so we're halfway there! We want to be able to give each child at least one new toy for Christmas." Foundation board members, Jayne Gillis, Julie Johnson, Bernie Anderson, Mary Ellen Arledge, Era Lee Coldwell and Bonnie Lem attended the Toy Drive celebration, and Troop is convinced this group will meet or exceed their goal. "When it comes to kids and Christmas, it tugs at your heart," Troop said. "When a child has to spend Christmas in the hospital, you want to make sure they at least have new toys! MOONGLOW OVER EL LAGO By Sue Mayfield Geiger

El Lago: (“city of the lake”)

When Neil Armstrong made his one small step for mankind on July 20, 1969, residents of El Lago looked skyward as the moonlight bathed this tiny slice of a town packed with neighbors, news crews and spectators. Armstrong lived in El Lago when he made his historic Apollo 11 flight and literally put the city on the map. A lot has changed since then and much of the hoopla has faded, but this tight knit community stays committed to maintaining the best quality of life possible in their city of 3,000 and counting.

Mayor: Brad Emel (mayor since 2001) Population: 3,000+ Square Miles: One (7/10 of a mile of waterfront) Bounded on two sides by: Taylor Lake and Clear Lake Incorporated: 1961 Points of Interest: Three boat launch facilities, swim/racquet ball club, nine acres of city parks (Armstrong, McNair and Witty), restaurants include: Boondoggles (with more beer on tap than any other local pub), Chelsea’s, Valdo’s, Jack in the Box, Gabacho’s.

Clad in Bermuda shorts and Crocs, Mayor Brad Emel greets me in the main chambers of City Hall with casual flair and a homey handshake. Living just three houses away from the office means he’s about as eco-conscious and green as you can get since getting to work means hopping on his bike or just strolling down the street a few hundred yards.

Something to Shout About: They have the second lowest crime rate in Harris County. What you may not know: El Lago sits on the site of one of the main hideouts for the famed pirate Jean Lafitte. Before El Lago was developed, it was a polo ground. More astronauts live in or have lived in El Lago than any other Bay Area city. Neil Armstrong lived in El Lago when he walked on the moon. Mayor Emel is also the co-owner of the iconic Classic Cafe on NASA Parkway in Seabrook.

The City Hall walls are not only plastered with framed photos of former mayors, but photos of 49 astronauts who have lived in El Lago (or presently living in El Lago). Known as the “Astronaut Wall of Fame,” the space heroes far outnumber the mayors. A few minutes chatting with Emel makes it obvious why astronauts and other savvy citizens choose this one square mile to call home. High on community spirit and bounded on two sides by Taylor Lake and Clear Lake, El Lago is lagging in economic development compared to other Bay Area cities. “Our sister cities have hotels, which provide money for lots of economic development,” says Emel. “However, many of those cities are not part of Metro, but we are, along with 13 other multi cities.” Emel went on to say that Metro operates with a half cent of sales tax revenue and in turn writes El Lago a check every year. “All cities use Metro in some form,” says Emel, “whether it be buses, HOV lanes, the Park

and Ride – those are all Metro dollars,” he adds. The tax money in other cities that are not part of Metro goes toward their economic development giving them more of an advantage. El Lago is indeed pretty much built out, but does have potential economic prowess because of real estate that may become available soon. The fate of The Landing condominiums is still in limbo and tied up in the court system since a few of its homeowners have filed a lawsuit to keep the structure from being demolished. As we go to print, the fate of The Landing is still undetermined and Emel could not comment due to legalities. Celebrating 50 years in 2011, El Lago is building a 50th Anniversary Commemorative Brick Walkway which will extend from the south side of the McNair Park Pavilion to the planned El Lago Community Center at the El Lago Swim and Racquet Club. Citizens are encouraged to support this endeavor by purchasing a brick that will have their name or special message inscribed and become a permanent part of the city’s future.

The popular McNair Memorial Park is located in the heart of the city and next to the El Lago Swim & Racquet Club.

El Lago has their very own newspaper (La Ventana del Lago, which means the window of the lake) that is printed nine months out of the year. Sales of luminarias at Christmas time are the main source of funds for the paper and the tradition was started as a way to send a Merry Christmas message to space shuttle astronauts on Christmas Eve. - Continued on Page 51
