The School of Canine Science
About
The School of Canine Science is Nando Brown and Jo-Rosie Haffenden. Formerly the Head of Training and Head of Behaviour for the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and the stars of Channel 4 series Rescue Dog to Super Dog. What courses look like PRIOR TO ATTENDANCE: Prior to attendance all participants will receive a pdf booklet with their course details inside. This will include prior reading recommendations (not obligatory) or tutorials along with practical information such as time, dates, venue information and the food situation. Where possible it will include hotel (dog and non dog) information as well as any health and safety notices regarding handling. The booklet will also include a bio of the tutor as well as a full itinerary of the course. DURING THE SEMINARS, COURSES AND TALKS: A healthy happy cohort is of upmost importance at The School of Canine Science. As such, when teaching theory courses tutors will ensure participants have a comfortable workspace to learn on and continuous access to snacks and water - which we know is pivotal in learning! Digital versions of presentations are emailed 48 hours prior to the course. Tutors ensure we break at least three times during the learning day to stretch as well as for breaks and food. The tutors also work hard to answer all questions and differentiate within tasks and lessons to ensure that each participant leaves having learnt something new without being overwhelmed. We also (even in the theory courses), where possible, have our four dogs with us to demonstrate training techniques as well as keep the atmosphere light and friendly. Day courses run 10am - 5pm EVENING SOCIALS: Socialising is super important on professional courses and we try to ensure that everyone leaves knowing the names of the people they have studied with. As such all courses which are longer than one day have a social evening included where we play games and bond! AFTERCARE MATERIAL: Too many courses make complete sense at the time but then when you look through your notes afterwards half the material turns to brain sludge. At the School of Canine Science, each participant gets sent a full workbook so they can continue evolving their knowledge and skills afterwards. This includes notes on course material, what to read now references as well as How-To video reminders for practical that has been trained or discussed.

What we need from a venue Courses are handling, non handling and sometimes a mix of both. Ensure you know which type of course you are booking prior to committing to dates. Venues for non handling courses: We come with our own projector, speaker and screen but will need a warm and dry room with access to tables and chairs. The room needs to either have sufficient blinds or else not be too light so as to ensure everyone will be able to see the screen. If you are booking for a dog training facility make sure there is electricity. Access to water, coffees, teas and snacks should be provided by the host as well as lunch if stated. If no lunch is provided then the host should ensure the participants have somewhere to go to get lunch near by and that snacks are present. If the indoor venue is off limits for dogs then we can only run our one day courses, please ensure we know about it prior to booking. Handling courses and bolt on practical days: Venues for practical work can be indoor or outdoor although for certain courses (such as The Man Hunt: 4 day) either both or an outdoor venue only is needed. Indoor venues will need to have plenty of space for dogs as well as for handlers and spectators. We will bring all needed equipment with us along with vision blinds (if needed) should the venue not be able to provide these. Outdoor spaces need an indoor or covered option for poor weather but can be considered (especially in the summer). Handling and non handling courses: Courses which enjoy a mix of theory and practical (for example the Yoga course and the Puppy course) will need two accessible spaces or one space that works for both. If an indoor training facility can also facilitate a projector and screen etc then this is perfect. If we are teaching in a different space than we are practicing please ensure that they are close enough so that on some days we are able to do a morning of teaching and an afternoon of practice.

The Science of Recall & Loose Lead Walking Presenter: Nando Brown Duration: Two days Type of course: Handling course Details: Why do dogs pull on the lead or refrain from coming back when you call them? Sometimes this lack of focus can be due to problems with motivation, or as a result of the dog becoming distracted; sometimes it is an arousal issue or a learned behaviour. This fun-filled two day workshop covers everything you need to know about teaching a dog to return when called and to walk nicely on a lead. Getting these two behaviours perfectly on cue is the cornerstone to most training businesses. All owners require a stable and immediate recall away from distractions, and having a dog that pulls on the lead can be the beginning of a relationship breakdown for many. Along with looking at why this problem occurs so frequently and the prevention strategies we can put in place to stop the problems arising in the first place, Nando walks groups of handlers through the best ways to train dogs who have a problem with these two basic and foundation behaviours.

‘Touch’: an evening clinic or masterclass Presenters: Nando Brown Duration: Up to three hours Type of course: Short handling clinic Details: Not just a fancy trick, the sustained nose target is used in much permission-based training and handling. This behaviour isn't simply nose-on and then off again, but instead asks the dog to hold their nose on to the owners hand for a longer period and even when there are massive distractions such as dinner! This clinic first demonstrates how to train this from scratch, then each handler is asked to come up and show the instructor where they have got to: whether it is a case of hitting a brick wall and not being able to keep the dogs nose on when there are distractions; or not knowing where to start - this clinic looks at one, very simple behaviour but aims to teach all participants about training in general. If you have a nose target but just can’t get your dog to hold it there then this is the one for you! Or if you just fancy spending an evening with experts learning how to really nail one behaviour by learning about clicker training and practicing it!

‘OUT’: an evening clinic or masterclass Presenters: Jo-Rosie and Nando Brown Duration: Up to three hours Type of course: Short handling clinic Details: Another really common problem people seem to have is teaching their dog to let go of stuff - particularly toys! Jo claims she worked for 8 years to get her dog Archie to finally learn that ‘out’ means ‘out of your mouth’ and not take it away or grab it harder! There are tons of reasons why dogs find this hard. Some, by nature, enjoy having something in their possession; some dogs have inadvertently been reinforced forced for holding, taking and keeping things of value. For some dogs a fear that the game is finished and that the taking of the item is just a trick is enough to stop the dog letting go and for others holding or tugging is rewarding in and of itself. There are a variety of different ways to teach the out and also a variety of different ways owners want the item delivered (on the hand, on the floor, on the lap etc). This evening clinic looks to go through the various tricks of the trade by taking a range of dogs through one-2-one tutorials in front of the group. There will be time for questions and answers and the clinic structure means that this course is suitable for all dogs - even those who are a little grumpy around other dogs. All delegates will receive a tutorial video helping them to continue the training after the clinic and additionally helping them to help clients with these problems too.

Breed Specific Legislation: a behavioural over view Presenters: Jo-Rosie Haffenden Duration: 1/2 day or 90 minute version Type of course: Non-handler talk Details: This talk aims to provide a behavioural insight as to why and how Breed Specific Legislation is failing to keep the public safe. The talk includes a look at the legislation as well as a practical analysis of how the law works in practice including how it effects legislators, dog professionals and dog owners on a day-to-day basis. We look at real life case studies and analyse the identification process, the section 1 and 4b legal process as well as what it means to be exempted from the owners perspective. This talk covers specific training protocol which can be done to help prepare likely bully breeds for a successful exemption process as well as life after exemption. The talk also covers a brief history of the pit bull terrier as well as an analysis of fatal dog attacks. We briefly look at why pit bulls tend to get into so much trouble worldwide and have a look at international laws. Finally we discuss potential changes to the law and how they could benefit the public. These are split into two sections - logistical aspects as well as legislation aspects. Participants are then instructed to leave the talk and come up with potential solutions. We will also have a resident pit bull in the talk for people to see and meet.

All our non handling seminars include live demonstrations with our own four demonstration dogs or via video if the venue does not permit dogs. All of the techniques are taught in a visual, mechanical and theoretical level. The seminars also include live exercises and case studies.

Positive bite work (an oxymoron?)
Presenter: Nando Brown Duration: Up to three hours Type of course: Non handling talk Details: Whilst dog bites are a huge problem for dog owners, there are plenty of sports and types of professional work that encourage dogs to bite including IPO, French Ring Sport, Belgium Ring Sport, KNPV, Working Trials Man Work and Mondioring as well as protection dogs, police dogs and security dogs. Trainers and behaviourists around the world debate whether it is actually possible to train this without increasing aggression or a dogs likelihood of biting. There is also some debate about whether or not it is possible to train this without using intimidation or fear-based methods. This talk covers the following: • A breakdown of bite work from a learning theory perspective • An overview of methodology posing the question: is it possible to teach bite work without fear and intimidation? • A look at drives - including predatory drive; fight drive and defense drive: what are these drives and do they exist? • An evaluation of application and how science can be used to explore the question: does bite work make my dog more likely to bite someone?

Integrating dogs: a case study
Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden and Nando Brown Duration: Up to three hours Type of course: Non handling talk Details: We are very often asked about our dogs. When we met one of us lived with a very outgoing Dobeman and an extremely demanding Malinois; and the other lived with a very sweet Vizsla and a reactive, pushy pit bull terrier! We had to find a way to integrate four dogs, two of which who were extremely incompatible! This talk covers our process, our mistakes and our lessons learnt. We look at the science and statistics of multi dog households as well as myth bust. We look at House Rules (the ones we stuck to; and the ones we didn’t) along with giving a full overview of exactly how we integrated the dogs from their first scent/sight of one another all the way to the first time all four could be in a room together without a lead or muzzle. The talk aims to give an overview of methodology, time frame and things to look out for when blending dog families.

Dog-human aggression: a case study
Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden Duration: Up to two hours Type of course: Non handling talk Details: Meet Bella the beautiful Chihuahua. This case study covers Bella’s case from when Jo had initial contact with her adoring owners who were pulling their hair out; to a year after Jo first met her. Bella presented with severe human aggression. If she had been bigger than the size of a pint glass she would have been in serious trouble with the law and very probably put to sleep a year before Jo met her when she bit her twelfth victim with level 5 bites to the legs and hands. This talk looks at the causes of Bella’s aggression and how Jo assessed them. The talk also covers the different options given to her owner and looks at the behaviour modification plan we used in reality - and how we got on. We look at owner feedback and practice as well as the support model we used for Bella’s case. This talk also gives a brief overview of rating bites, assessing aggression, managing risk as well as the legal implications and practical realities of living with a dog that bites humans.

Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden Duration: Up to two hours Type of course: Non handling talk Details: Meet Ben the stunning collie. This case study covers Ben’s case from when Jo had initial contact with his energetic owners who couldn't understand why he was so unhappy to be around other dogs; to a year after Jo first met him and he was able to mix. Ben presented with severe dog-dog aggression. Both on an average dog walk, as well as at agility competitions Ben would react violently on sight of other dogs - and redirected onto the lead. This talk looks at the causes of Ben’s aggression and how Jo assessed them. This talk also covers the different options given to his owners and the changes we had to make to Ben’s life. Jo explains the behaviour modification plan we used in reality - and how we got on. We look at owner feedback and practice as well as the support model we used for Ben’s specific case. This talk also gives a brief overview of assessing dog-to-dog aggression, managing risk as well as the legal implications and practicalities of living with a dog that bites dogs.

Red Courses Red seminars and workshops are accessible to existing dog trainers and behaviourists. The knowledge and skills we teach assume a good level of understanding and so novice dog owners, or people just starting out are not encouraged to attend. This allows us to take things to an advanced level and helps trainers to evolve their knowledge and skills to become better. Class sizes vary depending on what we are teaching from small handling courses which usually aim to have no more than 8 handlers, to larger groups such as 40 - 500 on seminars where people do not bring their own dogs. Most of our handling courses also have inclusive spectator spots and we aim to ensure spectators are as involved as is physically possible. All our non handling seminars include live demonstrations with our own four demonstration dogs or via video if the venue does not permit dogs. All of the techniques are taught in a visual, mechanical and theoretical level. The seminars also include live exercises and case studies.

Abnormal repetitive behaviour
Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden Duration: Two day course Type of course: Non handling course Details: Abnormal repetitive behaviour is extremely distressing for animal training professionals to see. Whether it is a parrot compulsively over grooming; a pony cribbing or weaving or a dog who has to perform the same persistent circling (tail chasing) multiple times a day for long periods. Did you know that it is estimated that around 1 in 50 dogs suffer with these behaviour cycles which are often referred to as CCD (Canine Compulsive Disorder). More recent science has lead to theories regarding the neurocircuitry related to CCD and the role of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems in this disorder. Other studies look at the disorder from a behavioural standpoint sighting physical constraint, conflict, allostatic load as well as confinement as a cause. In this seminar we look at possible definitions for this disorder; types of repetitive behaviour; possible theories related to cause or trigger for this disorder; along with how to assess the problem. We also assess the science including looking at possible problems with some of the studies and their results. In the second day we look at how we go about helping dogs and owners with this problem. We look at psychopharmacology, environmental change, how routines can effect the behaviour as well as behaviour modification options.

The Science of Dog-to-Human Aggression Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden with optional bolt on day with Nando & JoRosie Duration: Two day course with optional bolt on day Type of course: Non handling course with optional handling bolt on day Details: The science of dog to human aggression is a high level technical behaviour course and is designed for professionals working with or hoping to work with dogs who present with challenging behaviour. As well as offering a brand new model to analyze dogs with aggressive behaviour towards humans, this course covers the following: Definitions of aggression; how dogs display aggression; why dogs bite; nature or nurture; the brain and aggression; diagnosis and prognosis; set up; treating effective/defensive aggression; treating effective/offensive aggression; measuring success and fatal dog attacks. Optional bolt on: one day practical application (presented by Jo and Nando) This practical element turns the two day science of dog-to-human aggression course into a three day theoretical and practical course. This give participants an opportunity to spend one day learning the theory behind dog-human aggression cases, then another day learning how to practically apply that theory to cases and a final day getting hands on experience putting their new skills into practice. The additional day will clinic live behaviour cases and give people hands on experience of diagnosing and working with this problem. The dogs used will be real-life client dogs who will demonstrate varying degrees and types of dog-to-human aggression in a safe environment and sometimes via live video feed (where appropriate). Teams will be asked to work through the case by first interviewing the owner, making observations on diagnosis based on a managed exposure to a person and then offering management advice and training to the client. Finally, they will work on developing a set up to coach the owner through safely working with their dog.

Pyschopharmacology and voluntary vet behaviour Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden and Nando Brown Duration: Two day course Type of course: Non handling course Details: Psychopharmacology and voluntary vet behavior Presented by JoRosie (day 1) and Nando (day 2) Jo and Nando explore a more veterinary focused side to behaviour and training. Whilst it is not compulsory for behaviourists to understand the in’s and out’s of drug use in dogs, it is useful to expand knowledge in this area when it relates to behaviour. More and more frequently vets are prescribing medication that relates to fears, phobias, repetitive behaviour patterns and general anxiety along with aggression and canine cognitive dysfunction. Day one covers the broad basics of neurobiology, how different neurotransmittors can effect behaviour. We look at drug use, when and why drugs help dogs suffering with more mental based illnesses and disorders and what triggers we have to watch for which may suggest we need to refer a client back to the vet. We cover what the FDA approved drugs are as well as what extra-label commonly prescribed drugs are on the market. We look at how these different types of drugs effect the brain and the future of psychopharmacology. Day two focuses on voluntary vet behaviour and aims to teach a new protocol when examining and treating canine patients. Handlers are given specific behaviours to work on prior to attendance and during the day we work to take these to a higher level. The overall aim is to establish a dialogue whereby the dog can tell us when it hurts, when the procedure is too stressful or when the dog isnt comfortable with an intrusive exam. We also look at specific veterinary behaviours such as teaching dogs to open mouth on cue, present their ears for examination or lift a paw or tail. These behaviour further ensure vet visits are predictable and examinations are safe and more pleasant for the dog.

The Science of Resource Guarding
Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden Duration: Two day course Type of course: Non handling course Details: Resource aggression is one of the most severe and scary behaviour problems a pet dog owner can face. Often described as a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ the sight of bone or the approach of someone can turn a sweet and affectionate pet into a source of concern and worry for the whole family. Information about how to change these dogs behaviour has been scant since Jean Donaldson published her book ‘mine’ 14 years ago in 2002. This course offers updated theories based on the most current research as well as a fresh perspective on practical application. The material includes: Types of resource guarding What is resource aggression Adaptive normal behaviour or maladaptive problem behaviour? Are some dogs more likely than others to resource guard? ‘Guarding’ breed behaviour vs gun dog breed behaviour Genetics, DNA and epigenetics History forms and medical professional inclusion The brain and resource aggression Preventing the problem Workable management strategies Practical ways to change dogs who show resource aggression around stuff, food, people, spaces and other strange things • When to refer back to the vet • • • • • • • • • • •
Each candidate will receive a support package afterwards which will include videos of suggested strategies, photos and guides regarding setting up living spaces as well as structured guidance for practice and communication.

The Science of predation and problems with predatory behaviour Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden and Nando Brown Duration: Two day course Type of course: Non handling course with optional handling bolt on day Details: All dogs have some form of predatory drive - that is to say they all originated from hunters and many of them are still selectively bred to hunt today. We use elements of the predatory motor pattern to get most natural working behaviours such as herding, guarding, tracking, stalking, flushing and biting. However, sometimes these behaviours can get dogs into trouble. From chasing cars, to stalking other dogs or herding children - many owners struggle to control their dogs predatory drive. Day 1 looks at the science of predation - exploring how and why dogs use certain actions, how we breed for those behaviours as well as why some dogs drive to perform an element of the predatory motor pattern can get too much. We will look at the psychology of predatory behaviour as well as the neurobiological factors and delve into which dogs are statistically more likely to suffer and why. Day 2 explores the practical application of all this theory. We cover how to assess this behaviour safely whilst minimising stress to the dog; how to set dogs up to succeed; client preparation; how to manage and control these desires realistically; as well as how we go about changing the dogs behaviour. Bolt on day: The bolt on day will give people a chance to work with their own dogs if they struggle with predatory behaviours. Alternatively trainers and behaviourists are encouraged to bring a tricky client dog along to work. The focus will be on focus and impulse control along with chase recall and positive predatory interruption methods. Each candidate will receive a support package afterwards which will include videos of suggested strategies as well as structured guidance for practice and communication.

The Science of Bite
Presenter: Nando Brown and Jo-Rosie Haffenden + special guests Duration: 2 day course with 3 day bolt on options Type of course: Non handler course with optional handler bolt on days Details: There is a dog trainer saying that goes: “any dog can bite” - how true is this saying? And are some dogs more likely to bite than others? What about dogs whose main job it is to bite the bad guys; or dog handlers that train their dogs to bite for sport - are those dogs more likely to bite than others? This course takes an in-depth look at dogs that bite. We step into the brain and explore types of aggression vs other emotional states when dogs might use this action. The course delves into the physiology of the canine bite as well as looking at training biting behaviour. We also attempt to discuss the following questions: What is bite drive: is there such thing? Is one dog more likely to bite than another? What is the difference between a nip, a mouth, a grab-bite and a kill-bite How do dogs use their teeth to drive, grab, play or kill another creature? Can we train dogs to inhibit their bite? Or to use their mouth differently? Which dogs statistically bite more and why? Are some dogs preprogramed to bite people? How does the emotional state of the dog effect their likelihood or severity of their bite? • Does training a dog to bite in sport or professionally make them more likely to be aggressive? • • • • • • • •
