at Ma dison D ow ns JACKSON, TN- The Mid-South Walking Horse Association held their annual awards’ banquet on Saturday, January 4th at the lovely and picturesque Madison Downs. This remodeled facility was opened last year by the Howard Hamilton Family and mainly serves the public as a wedding venue. The evening was southern class at its best and included linen cloths, candlelight, talented musicians, excellent food and of course, some very happy award winners. The Scoop was delighted to be present. Association President, Gary Gilmore gave a brief review of the 2019 show season and followed it by encouraging everyone to participate in 2020 and show their horses. He also served as the evening’s emcee. One of the main fundraisers of the MSWHA is Youth Town, a home that provides help and mentorship for the area’s troubled boys. It was announced that last year over $6,500 was donated to this deserving group. A special emphasis of the evening was to recognize the youth participants because they are the future of this association and the entire Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. Leaders thought it would be special to recognize and award each. The two scholarship recipients were also recognized. Each young lady won a $500 scholarship. They were Claudia Gribble and Maggie Kail. Following all of the High Point Awards, the evening concluded with music, dancing and lots of fun fellowship. The Scoop congratulates the Mid-South Walking Horse Association for a successful year.

He was also an impassioned and active member of his community, a member of the Board of Trustees for Brookwood School, a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Brooks County, and a lifelong member of Ducks Unlimited. A charter member of Trinity Anglican Church, Paul was a man of strong Christian faith and supported many Christian- and youth-oriented organizations. In this spirit, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the South Georgia Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes: P.O. Box 466, Thomasville, GA 31799. The Scoop extends our deepest sympathies to the Bryan Family.

OBITUARY- WAYNE THORSON Wayne Thorson, 93 of Bemidji departed peacefully on New Year’s Eve, 2019 at Neilson Place in Bemidji, MN. He was a gifted man with numerous dear friends and accomplishments. He was a devoted family man, an exceptional businessman, a community leader, and a philanthropist. Funeral services for Wayne were held at January 7th at First Lutheran Church in Bemidji. Visitation was held the prior evening at Olson Schwartz Funeral Home, and one hour prior to service at the church. He was born Wayne Thomas Thorson on March 12, 1926 to Emil and Calma Thorson in Hendrum, MN. In his youth, Wayne was blessed with talent and filled with ambition. He became a standout athlete, leading his high school basketball team, the Hendrum Huskies from a town of 300, all the way to the region 8 finals -- where they battled and fell in a close contest to the goliath team of Bemidji. On the day of his high school graduation, he departed on the train to serve his country in World War II -- serving in the south Pacific under Admiral Nimitz at Pearl Harbor. Upon his return from the war, Wayne met Beverly Ness from Mahnomen who, unbeknownst to Wayne had been a follower of his during his high school basketball days. They were united in marriage on June 19, 1949, a marriage that would last for 68 years until Bev’s passing in 2017. In the late 40’s Wayne had gone to work for his future father in law, Bert Ness where he learned road construction and finance. In 1958 Wayne ventured on his own, forming WT Thorson Construction, and in 1962 he bought out Ritchie & Tell which moved the company to Bemidji. The company would later become Thorson Inc., a major highway contractor -- which would eventually sell to MDU in 2002 and become what is today, Knife River Materials. As a result of his strong business and financial acumen, Wayne served on several boards throughout his life, including First National Bank of Bemidji, the Concordia College Board of Regents, and the Minnesota Asphalt Pavement Association. He was even involved during the Dot Com era -- serving on the board of Buy.com where he was seated alongside current and former CEO’s from Pepsi, Apple and Prudential Life. For many years, Wayne was also a charitable philanthropist -- both locally and regionally -- supporting several institutions, foundations and scholarships, mostly in the areas of education and health. Additionally, he was generous to many individuals -- however when it came to one –on-one assistance, Wayne was more inclined to teach others “how to fish,” rather than merely handing out fish. And as a result, there have been many businesses, groups and individuals over many years who have credited much of their success to Wayne’s guidance and mentorship. Throughout his life, Wayne was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades -- Honorary awards, Lifetime Achievement, and Hall of Fame awards. He was also a founding member of PGA West in La Quinta, CA, where he and Bev wintered for 34 years. Wayne is survived by his brother Ron (Delayne) of Fargo, ND, his sister Karen (Darrel) Kaldor of Lake Nebagamon, WI, three sons, Scott (Pam) Thorson of Bemidji, Mark Thorson of Bemidji, and Duke (Rhonda) Thorson of Huron, OH, and one daughter, Kari (Jim) Bishop of Solway, MN, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Catherine, his brother Lowell, and three children, Mark Ness Thorson, Baby Ness Thorson, and an infant unresponsive at birth. The Scoop sends our warmest condolences to the Thorson Family.

The only son born to the late Ruth Long May and the late Phillip Roland May, Allen grew up in Wadley, graduating from Bartow Academy. While still in high school, he worked for Battle Lumber and continued his employment there after graduation. He then began work for CSX Railroad where he worked for many years before starting his own company, Precision Paving and Sealing. After closing this company, he went back to his roots and started Precision Pallet Company, Inc. He considered those in his employ his family and did not expect anything more from them than what he was willing to do. Allen loved his Lord and Savior. As a young man, he attended Wadley Baptist Church and was a past member of Kiokee Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and in various other positions. Being very mission-minded, he went on at least fifteen mission trips. For the past six years, Allen has served his Lord at InMotion Church. First and foremost, Allen was a family man. Known as “Big Al” by most, he was most proud of being “Pop” to his grands. He loved beach vacations with his family and time with Becky at their mountain house in Clayton. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing and going hunting; but his favorite pastime was fishing with his boys: the Alaskan fishing trip being a special, memorable time—not just for the fishing but for the great time and memories made. Allen loved his family unconditionally and stored up his treasures in them. He was happiest and most content in their presence, cherishing their time together. He had a great love for the newest addition to his family, Bella Rose, his French bulldog. Allen knew that we are all created equal—he never looked down on anyone and put everyone on the same, level playing field. Well-respected, a man of integrity, a man with a great work ethic, genuine, honest, charitable, a man with a big heart, and more have been said of Allen. Husband, best friend, father, “Pop”, “Big Al”, employer, co-worker, brother-in-Christ—whoever he was to you, you knew you were loved by him because he had a true love for others through Jesus Christ Allen has now journeyed to his eternal home where he was greeted with a “Well done my good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of thy Lord”. His eagerly awaited hope is now a reality for eternity. Others left to cherish his memory include his children, Jess May (Bettina), Jennifer Brooks (Scotty) and Eddie Waldrop (Brandi); sister, Ellyn Womack (Cale); seven grandchildren, Rivers May, Bailey May, Jackson May, Hampton Brooks, Bentley Brooks, Crews Waldrop and Karsyn Waldrop; nieces, nephews, church family and friends. Pallbearers will be Rick Benning, Les Brown, Curtis Floyd, George Hayes, Hal Keller and Tracy McDaniel. The Scoop sends our condolences.

EQUINE OBITUARY MORE OF THE DOLLAR

June, 2004 - December, 2019 More Of The Dollar was started in Kentucky by Mike Thomas and sold to the Bob Adcock Family as a two year old. He was placed in training with Charlie Green, beginning his long and successful show ring career. His first appearance at The Celebration was as a two year old with Charlie Green. Sam McLaughlin took over training duties in the fall of 2007 and remained his trainer until 2010. As a four year old, he made his second appearance at The Celebration, and then again as a five year old, both times with Sam McLaughlin in the irons. He was sold to the Louis Judd Family at the beginning the 2010 show season as an AOT horse. The Louis Judd Family would love, adore and care for More Of The Dollar for the rest of his life. Mr. Dollar, as he was affectionately called, was well traveled. He showed in many states including Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. He was shown over 114 times and won over 50 blue ribbons, 16 reserves and the rest 3, 4, and 5th places. Louis Judd showed him at The Celebration in 2010 and received a 5th place ribbon in the Owner Amateur Specialty World Grand Championship and returned in 2014 to place 3rd in the same class. His personality was calm, trusting, and wanting to please. His beauty was commented on often, and he loved the attention he got. His long flax mane with his multi-colored tail that reached the ground drew lots of attention. He was so proud of himself. While in the lineup, he would look around with his ears up letting us know he had a blast showing. The Scoop sends our warmest condolences to the Judd Family upon the loss of their beloved Mr. Dollar.
