Tigers advance with sweep of Navarro Sealy is 4-0 in playoffs By STEVEN SCHROEDER spschroeder06@aol.com
The Sealy Tigers baseball team has proved once again that it has learned its lessons from this season. Sealy swept Navarro, making them 4-0 in this years playoffs. In two dramatic games, Sealy came out victorious. Earlier this season these were games the Tigers may have found a way to lose. In the series opener with Will Cerney giving an outstanding pitching performance, the Sealy defense played flawlessly. With the score tied 0-0 in the seventh inning Drew Flemming came up huge. With the count 0 balls and 2 strikes, Flemming drove in the only run of the game and Sealy took a 1-0 series lead heading into Friday night. The second game of
the series was a lot like the first, both teams had great pitching and there was very little offense. With Sealy leading 3-0 in the seventh inning, Xavier Teague looked to finish off Navarro and throw his second complete game of the playoffs. The staff ace got a Navarro batter looking for a called strike three to end the game. The Sealy players rushed the mound in celebration. Teague did what he has all season, he battled and gave his team an opportunity to win. When asked how it felt, he flashed a big grin and said, “It felt a whole lot better than the bi-district win. Coach Bret Montier said, “We are regional quarter-finalist, which means we are one of the best 32 teams in the state, it feels pretty good.
The Sealy News/STEVEN SCHROEDER
The Sealy baseball team has won four-straight games to knock off two opponents and advance in the playoffs. Up next for the Tigers is Brazosport. Sealy 17-8 on the season will next play Brazosport 17-10. Brazosport swept Lavernia, the fourth ranked team in the state, this past weekend by scores of 3-1 and 6-1. El Campo, the District 27 champions,
now 24-4 will take on the District 29 champs Sweeney 23-6-1. In other area games, Bellville, the 21st ranked team in the state, swept Shepherd and will take their 20-7 record and play the West Orange Stark
Mustangs, also 20-7 who knocked Navasota out of the playoffs last week by scores of 2-1 and 3-1. Sealy and Brazosport will start their threegame series on Thursday night. Game 1 of the series will be
played in Brazosport, first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The second game of the series will be played Friday at 5 p.m. in Sealy. If necessary, Game 3 will take place 30 minutes after the completion of the second game.
Sanders still has a heart for the kids back home spschroeder06@aol.com
The Emmanuel Sanders Golf Invitational is coming up this summer at the Stephen F. Austin State Park. This tournament has a special meaning for Sanders. Sanders said he believes that all children deserve a chance at obtaining an education. His cause, Raising Academic Performance (RAP) gives children who are at risk of not graduating from high school an opportunity to earn a diploma through mentoring. Sanders plays wide receiver for the Denver Broncos. He played collegiately in Dallas for Southern Methodist University and was a four-year letterman in football, basketball, baseball, and track for Bellville High School. Sanders was born and raised in Bellville. His grandmother,
Margaret Lavonne Johnson was a big part of Sanders life. She opened her home to Sanders and several other family members, while working multiple jobs in order help support her loved ones. It was Sanders’ grandmother who first asked him to think about sponsoring the golf tournament a few years ago. During a brief interview with Sanders, he said, “I love golf and I love going out and speaking to and helping kids, so it was a no-brainier for me. Sanders’ sophomore year at Bellville High School was his best statistically against Sealy. He caught a 58-yard touchdown pass, and also broke a 77-yard run in which he was brought down at the one-yard line. Bellville won that year, 38-13 and Sanders was first team all-district utility back. In his junior season at Bellville, Sanders

team as a return specialist and Bellville defeated Sealy that year 27-7. In his senior season he was selected first team all-district secondary and running back. He did intercept a pass with Sealy driving at the Bellville 37 yard line to help Bellville preserve a 13-10 victory. Sanders was offered multiple scholarships after his senior season and he chose to attend college at Southern Methodist University. Sanders was redhsirted in 2005 so he did not start playing until 2006. He reeled in 46 catches as a redshirt
freshman for an impressive 605 yards and nine touchdowns. He didn’t see the field much until the fifth game of the season, where he had four receptions for 62 yards in the game against the Tulane. His best game as a redshirt freshman was against Houston. In that game, Sanders had nine catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Sanders started all 12 games as a sophomore making 74 catches for 889 yards to go with nine touchdowns. His 74 catches is the thirdmost in SMU history, while the yardage total ranks fourth. He was
named as honorable mention All-Conference USA as a receiver. June Jones became the head coach at SMU in 2008 and Sanders began blossoming as a receiver. The second team all-conference receiver had 67 receptions for 958 yards and nine touchdowns. The 95.8-yards-per-game average made him the 11th best receiver in college football that season and he was 19th in catches averaging 6.7. At the end of Sanders’ junior season he held SMU’s all-time touchdown receptions record with 27 and its all-time record of 100-yard receiving games with six. Lady Tigers dominating district By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com
The Lady Tigers were on fire in district play this week, and 17 was the magic number. Sealy defeated Wharton on Tuesday in three games, 25-13, 25-17, 25-14, then took down Brookshire Royal in three games as well, 25-4, 25-13, and 25-8. The Lady Tigers did not allow more than 17 points in any match this week solidifying their presence on the court as they come together to find their place in district. Sealy is now 25-11 for the season and 3-0 in district, and a huge win on Tuesday was the confidence booster the girls needed to keep their heads up and the team moving forward. Wharton had a hard time Tuesday finding their grove on the court and getting into a rhythm to pull out any significant points against Sealy. Libero Hope Zaruba returned to the court on Tuesday, but only for limited play time. Zaruba, who does not want to aggravate her
injury, is only playing enough to stay in action, but not overdo it. Playmakers for the Wharton game were Madison Luther with eight kills and two blocks, Rayann Rabius with eight kills and seven digs, LaShanda Fitzgerald with seven kills and one block, Laura Richardson with five kills and one block, Amber Klepser with 31 assists and seven digs, and Zaruba with seven digs. Friday, Sealy hosted Brookshire Royal and felt like royalty when the game was over. A quick three in, three out kept pace with the previous two district games and they walked out with their heads held high. Amber Klepser opened match one with a serve that couldn’t be defended and placed four aces on the board right away. In match two, the Lady Tigers gave up a few more points than in match one, but kept the Lady Falcons in check with good defense and quick feet for their kill attempts.
Standout performances on Friday against Royal were Rayann Rabius with 12 kills, Maelee Sowa with eight kills and two aces, Madison Luther with four kills and five aces, Amber Klepser with 27 assists, four aces, and eight digs and Hope Zaruba with four digs and four aces. Sowa gave some team insight after the game and where they plan to go next. “Right now we are very close to coming together on the court, it’s like we are just an inch away,” she said. “We are working on our plays in practice, and it’s getting there. We are working on taking each game and play one at a time, and not letting these teams get into our heads. We gotta shake it off and just have fun.” The next two district games will bring major competition and test the team’s abilities. First on Tuesday, Sealy hosted Columbus, who is known to bring a lot of height and talent, On Friday, Sealy will travel to El Campo.

Sealy student a self-taught bodybuilding champion By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com
There are many great sayings people use to inspire others. For Jordan Story, “Ambition is the first step to success, the second is action are the words she lives by. Sealy High School senior Jordan Story has a plan for success. At only 18, she has achieved more than many adults could even dream about. Being a two-time gold champion in bodybuilding at her first two competitions is definitely at the top of her resume. In addition to being a student, Jordan is also a varsity cheerleader for the Tigers, works a part-time job and still finds time to work out and compete in a sport she is very passionate about. Jordan’s story starts at the gym in 2014. She was working out with her mom, when she was asked if she was a bikini model. She didn’t think much of it right away, but the seed was planted in her mind and she began to research the subject. Jordan found that she could use her love of fitness for a higher goal and to better herself. She began working out harder and more often. In the beginning it was only about an hour a day, but began to grow. When Jordan entered her first competition in March of 2015, she was the definition of a selftrained athlete. The Phil Health competition boasted over 1,300 entries in the areas of bikini, figure, physique or bodybuilder. Jordan entered three contests; teen, novice, and open

I was proud of myself and it felt natural.â€? To her amazement, she won first place in the teen division, second place in the novice division, and fifth place in the open division. The medals earned at her first competition fueled the fire to work harder, be stronger and not settle for anything less than all first place finishes at the next competition. Jordan’s next competition was set for June of 2015. It would be the Adela Garcia contest. To ready herself, Jordan hired a trainer who put her on a specific eating and gym regime. Jordan spent three hours a day in the gym six days a week. “Time really flies by for me when I am at the gym, I look up and I have been there three hours or more,â€? she

As time grew closer to the competition, everything she took in was monitored, including water consumption. The Adela Garcia was a smaller competition, but still held over 600 entries. She again entered the bikini category of teen, novice and open. Jordan was ready and the judges thought so too. Jordan again earned first place in the teen, second place in novice, and improved to second place in the open category. “Right now for me, this wasn’t good enough. I want all first and I will work harder until I get it, she said. Jordan is already thinking ahead to her next competition season which will begin early next year. Her diet is very exact and calculated. “I eat every three hours. I have exact amounts that I take in that are very specific for what I want to do. I have shakes while I am
at school to fit into my schedule. She is now nationally qualified, so the next step is the professional level. “I would like to someday compete in Olympia, she said. Jordan has big plans for herself now and after graduation in June. She is currently seeking her certification to become a personal trainer. In addition to that, she has plans to try out to be an NBA cheerleader for the Rockets or the Miami Heat next January. She prefers their cheer/ dance styles to other teams in the league. Jordan would then like to serve her country and join the Marines so that she will have the financial aid to help pay for college. In college, she would like to study business so that she can become a real estate agent and flip houses or apartments and own her own business. “I want to be a philanthropist, like J.J.
Watt. He helps so many people and inspires everyone to be better and do better, that’s what I want to do. I want to be able to give back to people, she said. Jordan had a strong

desire to help people. “So many people are defined by rich or poor, and I have known for a long time that I want to help people break down those walls and become more than they think they can, she said.

Wallace a top collegiate recruit – on defense By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com
The Sealy Tigers have a massive weapon on the field every Friday night. Standing 6-foot, 3-inches and weighing 211 pounds, Christian Wallace is one of the most sought after safeties in high school football. That’s right. Sealy’s domineering running back is being recruited for his defensive prowess. Recently rated a four star recruit, he is ranked the 11th best in the country by maxpreps.com, Wallace runs his 40 in 4.45 seconds. While a junior at Katy Thompkins High School, Wallace played offense and defense. He had 13 tackles defensively and 255 combined yards rushing and receiving according to maxpreps.com. Playing both sides of the ball for Sealy as well, Wallace prefers defense and is being sought after to play defense. In an interview Wallace said, “I
just want to help my team anywhere I can, whatever I can do.” With over 600 rushing and passing yards in just his first four games, that statement proves to be true. Wallace has played some defense for the Tigers. Having two tackles against Brookshire Royal, both of them for a loss, he has had little other time on defense. Wallace is still gaining field experience by working on foot speed, vision and ball control even if it is on the other side of the snaps. He said, “It makes me a little nervous, but then it makes me work harder to be the best” with so many universities that are watching what he does on the field every Friday night. Wallace has received offers from Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Louisiana State, Texas Christian and the University of Texas. Wallace reported he traveled quite a bit this summer, covering over six states. Early in the summer he
pick until he has made official visits to each school – Texas, Oregon State and Mississippi State. In determining how he would narrow down his pick, he stated, “Oregon just made me feel so welcome, like family, and Mississippi has a great coaching staff, but UT is right here and my family could come to more of my games if I stay close.” UT was Wallace’s first stop on Sept. 12. Oregon State followed
