Whether it’s at the closest beach to home or a secret reef between tropical islands, floating in the open ocean and riding a wave is pure bliss. Letting go and enjoying the here and now is a universal ethos of surfers and the very spirit of travel. When it came to documenting our 2014 collection, it was only natural to pack our bags for the next slice of paradise — after all, the birth of Seea came from needing a stylish rashguard for a surf trip. The destination was Nayarit, Mainland Mexico, and our gathering of friends from disparate countries quickly made new local amigos there, each of us connected by a love for the ocean and the magic of riding waves. We hope these images and stories inspire you to find your own crew of surf soulmates and dream destination.

SALTWATER REFRESHMENT

SALTWATER REFRESHMENT Savor a full day of glassy, clean waves without letting the hot rays burn your delicate skin. The sun beats down hotter in the tropics close to the equator, which is why it’s even more important to cover up with sleeves and surf leggings. Seea’s rashguards and surf leggings are rated UPF 30+ to 50+ and can help protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Smear on plenty of sunscreen, don’t forget to reapply throughout the day, cover up in style, and soak in the joy of a carefree surf sesh.

Radiating Style Meet globetrotting fashion stylist for Seea and soul surfer Elisabetta Dal Bello By Johnie Gall “I never really decided to work in fashion, I just knew since I was a child that I wanted to. During high school I bought a ton of fashion magazines and one day I read this article in Italian Elle about fashion stylists.” Elisabetta Dal Bello’s elegant accent pulls at her words like taffy. “I remember running to my mom, so happy, showing her the article.”

“Even in the water, a women who surfs can show her grace and femininity.” After high school, Elisabetta moved to Milan, to pursue her newfound dream, swiftly landing a coveted position as the stylist’s assistant at the very magazine that inspired her —Italian Elle. But as she continued to land jobs with high profile clients, the harshness of the industry took its toll on Elisabetta. “I wanted to be at the top and I was at the top, but then I realized that if you want to be at the top, you have to dedicate your life to this. I realized that I was too young to live only for fashion.” She’d come to a realization that could have easily knocked her into an existential crisis. Instead, Elisabetta found solace in the most unlikely of places: Mexico. Her trip there was supposed to be two days long —she stayed for a month and a half.

“I learned how an amazing dress could be terrific to wear and look horrible in a picture at the same time. I learned how to choose a dress not just because I like it, but because it will look great in the picture.”

Radiating Style “I discovered the magic of surfing,” she remembers. “Surfing saved my mind from the competition of the fashion system, from being obsessed with clothes, materialism and power. Surfing is my cleanliness and integrity. It’s like rehab for my mind.” Then a funny thing happened: instead of falling off the grid, Elisabetta became more in-demand than ever. “I worked on myself and on balance, to have the power to choose how to spend my time, and how much to give to my job.” She became more observant, her vision more precise, and suddenly she was a regular contributor to Vanity Fair Italy and Velvet Magazine. “The best compliment for me is when someone can recognize my work even if there’s no credits. My style has changed with me in the years and it’s similar to how I am now: colorful, natural, gypsy, rock ‘n’ roll.”

“I have so many different outfits for surfing: one for big waves, one for longboard sessions, one for each situation.”

Elisabetta has been at the top of her game for 13 years, as a busy stylist with a long list of fashion titans as clients, so you half expect her with a perfect manicure, an expansive closet, uncomfortable shoes. Instead you find her with salty hair and minimal makeup, radiating a sense of peace, the master of a personal style curated by travel, surfing, and the understanding that life is about more than what you’re wearing. “Style is a state of mind. It’s not easy to explain. Even in the water, a woman who surfs can show her grace and femininity. It’s the sound of the voice, the way of walking, a movement, a beautiful hat, a haircut… it’s a feeling. It’s how we’re able to communicate ourselves to others in the truest of ways.”

Magic and waves through the lens The unexpected earth and ocean adventures of photographer Nick LaVecchia Photography is an animal —wild, unpredictable, fragile, surprising. Take it into the ocean and it’s even harder to tame, subject to the turn of the tide, the light dancing off the water, even the skill of the surfers sliding by. “Getting rolled around in the sand comes with the territory,” says Nick LaVecchia, the surf photographer who joined us behind the camera in Mexico. “You have to be okay with it in order to be comfortable.” And comfortable he seems, effortlessly ducking in and out of sets, holding steady his tool of choice—a lion tamer. Nick spends much of his time in the water studying its ever-changing nature, not uncommon for a surfer. “When you spend that much time in and around a

place like the ocean, you can’t help but notice all the subtle changes it’s going through. The slightest wind shift can change the whole day. The action comes second for me. I like to take a step back and observe the environments and how we as surfers fit into it.” Nick is a renowned photographer, whose work has appeared in Outside Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Surfer and Monster Children, and by the looks of his sun-soaked action shots, you’d assume he’s some fourth-generation West Coast dweller—but you’d be mistaken. “The colder, more raw places seem to have the most effect on me. Alaska.” Deciding where to go next has never been an issue for Nick, since planning usually means plopping a finger down on a map and booking a ticket to whichever country it lands on. “That feeling of stepping off the plane in a new place that you’ve never laid eyes on before —that really fuels my creativity when it comes to making images.” And for Nick, that means images that are as storied—and unpredictable —as his next getaway. And of course all the beautiful images in this magazine from our trip to Mexico are from Nick as well. (Minolta Weathermatic-a article excluded.)

“I traveled to Tanzania in Africa for a month,” he says. “We stayed with a Massai tribe in their boma. I learned how to properly throw a spear from a 12-year-old tribesman. I summited Mount Kilimanjaro on that same trip. I spent 28 days getting lost and The Shakamuchacha issue | Seea 2014

Do’s and Don’ts of a Surf Trip

Travel like a seasoned surf gypsy with this handy checklist by the Seeababes

Do’s Always bring adventurous travel companions. Pack comfortable clothes: sundresses, drapey cover-ups, high-waist shorts, flip-flops, nice flats for going out, and a floppy hat. Make an essential checklist: money, ID, toiletries, first aid kit, travel journal and wetsuits. Bring stickers for quick ding repair. Always get the surfboard bags with rollers at one end so you can get around the airport easily Try to negotiate the board bag cost. Make friends with the baggage employees while you’re standing in line, it’ll make a huge difference when you go to weigh your boards.

Don’ts Don’t forget high-quality, water-resistant sunscreen. Don’t be a fashion victim! Bring cool, versatile pieces and a touch of glamour, but don’t overpack with bulky items that weigh you down. Don’t forget to bring board straps even if they’re the cheap ones. Don’t take your boards with glassed-on fins and risk getting damaged in transit. Don’t be disrespectful. As a guest in the country, tread lightly and leave nature as you found it. Make friends with locals for the inside scoop to restaurants and surf spots. Don’t reveal secret surf spots when you post a photo on Instagram or Facebook.

Seeababe and film photography devotee Luki O’Keefe gave her advice for framing the shot. “To me, shooting with a film camera rather than a digital camera is like growing your own vegetables rather than buying them. It takes trial and error, but they feel more meaningful and organic in the end.

Styling out of a Suitcase

Styling out of a Suitcase

As a stylist for high-profile fashion magazines like Vanity Fair Italy, Elisabetta Dal Bello reveals her expert tips on how to fix wardrobe snags, step up your style game, and what to pack for a trip. In my styling bags: I have my style that is very personal, but usually the accessories and clothes that I pack depend on the story. For example, if I need to make a color story, I will bring all colored stuff. If I need to make a retro story I will bring things of that period. I usually always bring with me a couple of hats. They immediately give the right attitude to any model. But there’s always a piece or a pair of shoes that are completely out of the blue from the story because I like the idea of the unexpected in my aesthetic. For Seea I brought: Little pieces like mini skirts, shirts, cropped tops, long silk skirts, lace pants—easy and light pieces. The main items were Seea suits, so the other clothes just need to be part of the accessories but nothing too important or massive. My kit is never missing: Safety pins! A good stylist couldn’t leave without them. Safety pins are the stylist’s best friend! They could reduce a shirt or pants to two sizes and erase any unaesthetic wrinkles from any clothes. 42

Seea 2014

| The Shakamuchacha issue

My fashion advice for a surf trip: Try to pack your style in a small space. That means bring your favorite small pieces—better if you can use them as layers like a crop top, your favorite T-shirt and maybe a light cashmere sweater for the AC on the airplane. Seea pieces are the perfect match to the idea of layers. Mix a Seea item worn in the morning for a surf session and wear the same item at night plus a nice silk blouse. It’s the best solution in a tiny space! My advice for girls choosing a swimsuit: Feel good and confident with the style you are looking for. For example, I’m the kind of girl who looks good in '70s style. I could never wear a '50s skirt or a pin-up girl bustier because I know it does not represent my style. The most important thing is to find something that represents our personal style the best. The secret is to valorize the better side of us. If you have super long legs or a tiny waist or a good skin color, always choose something that makes you feel your best.

Look 1: Wearing a chunky oversized sweater on top of the Swami’s is the perfect way to warm up after a sunset session, and why not for an aperitif on the beach too?

Styling out of a Suitcase

Look 2: For a romantic mood in the Hermosa, try an all-pastel palette with silk fluttery shorts in dusty pink and chic sandals in baby blue leather.

Look 4: Combine the Palomar crop top with a maxi skirt and striped espadrilles and be ready to party in exotic South Pacific-style as the elegant version of a hula dancer.

Look 3: Simply add a cute fringe bag and fitted skirt to the Riviera to transform this one-piece into a glamorous bustier look for a day of shopping.

Encantado, Israel. Israel Preciado is unmistakable in the line-up. Wearing a mask of white zinc, legs as quick as a spider, and sweeping drop-knee turns, he possesses a psychic instinct for each wave’s character and nestling in its pocket. Born and raised in Nayarit, Mexico, Israel is an official mayor of the beach town, a big brother, and a lynchpin that connects traveling surfers to realizing their dream vacation. He does all this with panache and speaking in the most tweetable quotes. Here were a few of our favorites.

Encantado, Israel On why he doesn’t linger on the shoreline: “I don’t like to be on the beach. I’m anal about the sand.” On turning down partying with bikini models: “They are super gorgeous, but I don’t need that in my life.” On his favorite point break wave: “That wave—it’s sacred. The Simple Life Lucy Mejia is an inspiration for living a simple life in a beautiful environment filled with healthy and joyful pursuits. Her morning starts in the oceanfront jungle palapa in Mexico that she calls home with her partner Jose, and the daylight hours are spent surfing, being active and making tasty food. As co-owner of the local healthy food restaurant Café Esperanza, Lucy Mejia is our go-to expert for easy and delicious recipes that are full of fresh ingredients. “Discovering this small surfing village, with an abundant local, organic farmers’ market and more than six surf breaks within a 20-minute drive, we were sold!” she says of her current home in Mexico. “Being from Byron Bay, Australia, one of the most beautiful places in the world to me, I never thought I would find another place to call home. Superfoods for Surfing a By Lucy Meji

In Mexico we are blessed with an abundance of readily available superfoods — calorie sparse and nutrient-dense foods —that pack a lot of punch for their weight. They are superior sources of antioxidants and essential nutrients. Five of my favorite local superfoods are: coconut (ultra-hydrating electrolytes), mesquite (high vitamins and minerals), chia (high in protein, amino acids, and fiber), cocoa (concentrated antioxidants) and spirulina (high in protein). Coconuts are central to my life here in the jungle! My mornings ceremoniously include opening a fresh coconut with my machete as I check the swell.

Sayulita Superfood Smoothie This is my favorite breakfast smoothie because it has all my essential nutritional needs to start the day and it’s all local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. The recipe is flexible depending on what ingredients are available.

Ingredients: Flesh and water of one coconut 2 Tbsp of Mesquite Powder 2 Tbsp of Maca 1 Tbsp chia seeds 1/2 Tbsp of Vanilla 1 Tbsp cinnamon Agave or raw honey to your taste 1 ripe banana 1 cup of ice 1 cup of water An easy way to impress your friends with breakfast after the surf is to take the leftover smoothie and make a quinoa breakfast in a clear tall glass. Layer pre-cooked red and white quinoa with layers of smoothie and fresh fruit. My preference is banana, mango, and berries when they are available. You can also use apple and pear if this is local for you. Top it off with diced dates, figs, hemp seeds, and bee pollen. Que rico! If you’re trying to stay off dairy you won’t even notice it missing in this creamy deliciousness. Enjoy! Seea 2014

Gimmie Shelter

An expert of filming motion pictures, videographer Will Mayer’s van life is always on the move. Videographer Will Mayer once got on the wrong bus in Central America. “In a lot of countries where I didn’t speak the language, I’ve been lost for days,” he says. “I’ve definitely had some issues traveling because I purposely try to go into every trip with a very vague plan and just let things unfold.” But winging it has always seemed to be a sort of motif for Will, who landed his first job filming for Vans when he was just 14 years old. “I lied and said I was a few years older,” he laughs. “They bought it and started sending me on trips. It was crazy because here were all these skaters, surfers, and snowboarders I had grown up idolizing. I had no idea where I would go, but I decided not to go to college, buy a van, and drive west. Best decision of my life.” Will’s success as a sought-after videographer has transformed him into something of a nomad, a bicoastal professional with a perpetual commute between New York and Los Angeles. “Personally, I can’t stay in one place for more than a month before I feel claustrophobic, so it works out,” he says. That’s where his spontaneous adventures come into play - a three-day trip to Costa Rica that led Will to Panama, where he jumped on a boat out to Bocas del Toro islands. Or an Icelandic work trip where he bumped into National Geographic and roamed the country with them for the better part of a month.

Will recently rode out a long stint of corporate jobs beholden to meticulous storyboards and scripts, so capturing the Seea girls on film in Mexico for our video lookbook was a return to his run and gun shooting roots. “It was refreshing to create something fun,” he says. “Style is a huge factor in both my life and work. I believe your style is your identity. It’s what separates you from a million other cats all doing something similar.” By the looks of Will’s impressive portfolio, we’d say he doesn’t have much to worry about when it comes to imitators.

Favorite home break: Democrats Point on Long Island, New York. Ideal trip: Sailing in the Soloman Islands. Current quiver: 5’6” Almond Quadkumber, 5’8” Stretch Fletcher Four Fin, 5’10” Patterson Thruster, 6’2” Step Up.
