2013 Cadillac ATS: Third time’s a charm

Cadillac’s ATS sedan offers a luxury-feel with effortless acceleration. ■

By Mike Blake

By Mike Blake Carlisle Events

Cadillac is thinking small again, and this time, they may have hit the right combination for success with the all-new Cadillac ATS compact luxury sports sedan. Cadillac struck out in 1981 with the Cimarron, a leather-upholstered, front-drive J-car based on the Chevy Cavalier, and whiffed again with the Opel Omega-based Catera (ostensibly a small mid-size) in 1997. The third time may be the charm, as the Cadillac ATS looks and feels as luxurious as several German-built rides, is brimming with electronics and incorporates Cadillac CUE (Cadillac User Experience), a comprehensive in-vehicle system that merges intuitive design with industry-first controls and commands for information and media data. While the ATS name is not alphabetic short-hand for anything specific, it can be linked to other models, as it is smaller in dimension than its sister, the Cadillac CTS, which is smaller than its sibling, the Cadillac XTS. However, after a week of test driving, the letters certainly could stand for A Terrific Sedan. Developed on an all-new, lightweight rear-drive ar-

China helps BMW offset European weakness Net profit rose 16 percent, reaching $1.65 billion. ■

by DAVID McHUGH Associated Press

FRANKFURT, Germany — Strong sales of its luxury cars in China helped Germany’s BMW AG overcome weak markets in crisis-ridden Europe. Net profit rose 16 percent in the third quarter to €1.29 billion ($1.65 billion) on a 13.7 percent jump in sales to a record €18.82 billion. The Munich-based carmaker said Tuesday it was sticking to its forecasts for 2012 sales and earnings to be up on the previous year despite “an increasingly uncertain market environment.” CEO Norbert Reithofer called it a “good third quarter” but added that in the fourth quarter the company and the auto sector as a

whole “are likely to be confronted with adverse business conditions.” Bo o m i n g A s i a n sa l e s helped the maker of the X5 sport utility vehicle and the 5-series sedan overcome a stagnant market in Europe. China sales rose 30 percent, while European sales grew by a modest 2.6 percent as sales sagged in southern Europe where the debt crisis is at its worst. Sales were even down slightly, by 0.5 percent, in BMW’s home market of Germany. Having a strong presence in three key regions — Asia and the United States as well as Europe — has helped insulate BMW from the tough European car market. Many countries, including Spain and Italy, are in recession, while unemployment across the 17-country eurozone has

risen to a record 11.6 percent. Figures next week are widely expected to show that the eurozone as a whole is back in recession. The associated slack demand has forced mass-market carmakers such as Ford Motor Co. to close plants, and others like General Motors’ Opel to look at cutting capacity. BMW however focuses on the more recession-resistant luxury end of the market, where profits per vehicle are higher. The company said its third quarter profits were helped by a strong model mix — meaning sales are up in the more profitable parts of its model range. For the first nine months of the year, sales of its X3 SUV, produced in Spartanburg, South Carolina, rose 28.7 percent while those for its 5series larger sedan increased by 5.3 percent. BMW shares fell modestly, trading down 0.3 percent at €64.30.

Ford has prettiest, affordable hybrid car The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid’s larger size doesn’t sacrifice noise; it remains quiet inside. ■

by ANN M. JOB Associated Press

Who says that fuel-thrifty gasoline-electric hybrid cars have to be snub-nosed, rounded and ho-hum to look at? Not designers at Ford Motor Co., whose 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid is arguably the prettiest hybrid car in the U.S. market. Most people won’t recognize this new, curvaceous model as a relative of last year’s Ford Fusion. Some sports car enthusiasts thought the test 2013 Fusion Hybrid had styling cues from an Aston Martin luxury sedan. Better yet, the extensively-revised-for-2013 Fusion Hybrid is quiet inside and larger than its predecessor, has European handling and is rated at 47 miles per gallon in combined city/highway driving by the federal government. This rating makes the fiveseat, 2013 Fusion Hybrid second only to the longrunning, mid-size, five-seat Toyota Prius hatchback in fuel efficiency in the U.S. market. The 2012 Prius is rated at a combined 50 mpg by the U.S. government. No 2013 Prius rating is posted yet. Just as notable is the 2013 Fusion Hybrid’s starting retail price of $27,995. This includes the latest technology lithium-ion battery that stores electricity that’s generated while the car travels. The price for the new car is $1,575 less than the starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $29,570 for last year’s Fusion Hybrid

with last year’s styling and older, nickel-metal hydride battery. And, not to be missed, Ford offers a slew of standard and optional safety equipment on the new Fusion Hybrid. There are eight standard air bags, including two knee air bags for the two frontseat passengers to keep them from “submarining” from their seats during a frontal crash. Optional safety items include a new warning system to alert a driver that an impending frontal collision is possible and attention needs to be directed to a vehicle ahead. Say a truck just ahead slows, but the Fusion Hybrid driver’s foot remains on the gas pedal without change of pressure. The warning system flashes bright red lights onto the driver-side windshield and makes an audible warning sound. Competitors to the new Fusion Hybrid obviously include the Prius, which has been the top-selling hybrid in the United States. The 2012 Prius has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $24,795. No 2013 Prius pricing has been released. Toyota’s Camry Hybrid has a retail starting price of $26,785 as a 2012 model. This is $1,210 less than the stylish 2013 Fusion Hybrid. The five-seat, mid-size Camry Hybrid is rated at a combined 41 mpg. Meantime, another stylish gas-electric hybrid — the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid — starts at $26,626, or $1,370 less than the new Fusion Hybrid. The 2013 Fusion Hybrid is

one of three Fusion offerings. One is a plug-in model that’s due later this model year, and the other is a gasoline model that provides a choice of three, four-cylinder engines: A naturally aspirated four cylinder and two turbocharged four cylinders. For 2013, there is no V-6. All the new Fusions have a new front-wheel drive platform that’s a reworked platform from the European Ford Mondeo sedan. The test car won high marks for its looks, and people didn’t stop with compliments about the exterior. The interior, too, seemed upscale, with a high-quality look to the plastics and tester’s comfortable seats that felt neither too firm nor cushy. N o te t h e d a s h b o a rd sits higher than those in a Camry or Honda Accord, though. The Fusion Hybrid’s electronic aids take some getting used to, and yes, the new hybrid can be had with the often-criticized MyFord Touch system that puts audio, ventilation and navigation controls on a display in the middle of the dashboard. But the buttons there don’t provide any tactile feedback, so drivers also can use some steering wheel buttons that are redundant for the radio or use voice control, if they learn the proper commands. The Fusion Hybrid is an easy traveler, with decent spirit in most driving situations. The combined engine-electric system delivers 188 horsepower but it feels like more. Sadly, the real-world fuel mileage was just 26.9 mpg with much pedal-to-themetal driving. Most impressive in the

GM gets new credit lines totaling $11B The company has more than $42 billion in available cash and credit. ■

DETROIT — General Motors is boosting its cash with $11 billion in new credit lines, a move that could mean the automaker is preparing to buy back its shares from the government. The company said Monday it acquired the credit from 35 financial institutions in 14 countries. It now has more than $42 billion in available cash and credit. GM wouldn’t say specifically what it plans to do with the money, only that it’s a source of “backup liquidity” that may be used for “strategic initiatives.” But industry analysts said GM could be hoarding the cash to buy back stock, specifically from the U.S. government. The U.S. Treasury Department owns 26.5 percent of General Motors Co. It received the sake in exchange for a $49.5 billion bailout about four years ago. In a note to investors, Barclays analyst Brian Johnson suggested GM should use the bulk of its cash to gradually buy back its shares. “We, and other investors, would view a share buyback as the best use of cash in the near-term,” he wrote. Analysts said GM could also use the cash to pay for a restructuring of GM’s troubled European operations, buy Ally Financial’s Euro-

pean auto finance division or further fund its pension plans. Government-controlled Ally is GM’s former financing arm. GM says the new lines have more favorable terms than its old one and will allow it to borrow in different currencies. Two of the three New York debt-rating agencies, Moody Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s, quickly gave the GM credit lines an investment-grade rating on Monday. But that doesn’t mean GM’s overall corporate credit rating changed from junk status. S&P’s corporate rating on GM remains at “BB+,” the highest junk rating. Moody’s kept the corporate rating at “Ba1,” also one notch below investment grade. Moody’s has given GM a positive outlook and said it remains on track to return to investment grade within the next year. GM’s new lines of credit include a three-year $5.5 billion facility and a fiveyear $5.5 billion line. They replace GM’s existing $5 billion credit line, which was to expire in 2015. GM also has $31.6 billion in cash and securities. Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann said the lines are a vote of confidence in the company’s

A sign stands outside Oshawa’s General Motors car assembly plant in Oshawa, Canada. General Motors says it has received $11 billion in credit lines from 35 financial institutions in 14 countries, boosting its available cash and credit to more than $42 billion. financial strength. The automaker, known derisively as “Government Motors” for taking bailout money to avoid going under in 2008 and 2009, has long wanted the government to sell its stake and exit the business. But the government, which still owns 500 million GM shares, is waiting for the stock price to rise before making a move. The government is $27 billion in the hole on its investment, and to break even, GM shares would have to sell for $53. At this point, they’re not even close. Shares fell 22 cents to close at $25.57 Monday. It would cost GM nearly $12.8 billion to buy back all of the government’s shares

at the current price. Last week, GM announced a $1.48 billion third-quarter profit on strong North American earnings, big improvements in South America and strong earnings in international areas outside of China. But there are signs of weakness. Profit in North America, GM’s most lucrative market, fell 17 percent from July through September. The company’s market share in the U.S. dropped more than two percentage points to 17.6 percent, and its U.S. sales increase of 3.4 percent for the year lags overall market growth of 14.5 percent. In Europe, where it hasn’t made money in a dozen years, GM lost $478 million before taxes.

Automobile Brief Oil prices rise after year’s biggest drop Oil prices rose above $85 per barrel on Thursday as postelection volatility continued. Crude oil rose 65 cents to

close at $85.09 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That followed a decline of 5 percent on Wednesday, when traders were spooked by worries about budget negotiations in the U.S. Analysts also say that oil supplies and production are high, which tends to drive

down prices. Oil analyst Jim Ritterbusch wrote in a note that he expects this week’s price volatility to subside, but there’s still a bias toward new lows. The U.S. has large inventories of oil and production is at 17-year highs, he wrote.

As a bonus, Ford includes the same “ brake coach” that’s in the C-Max to give drivers feedback on whether their brake application is collecting and retaining as much regenerative power as possible. A small display in the instrument panel tells instantly how much braking energy was recouped in a just-finished stop.

Voters reject bid to change insurance rate-setting LOS ANGELES — For the second time in three years, voters have rejected a ballot initiative that would have let auto insurers charge drivers based on their history of maintaining coverage. Proposition 33 failed Tuesday with about 55 percent voting against. It was the second attempt by billionaire insurance executive George Joseph to let insurers lower rates for drivers who maintain insurance coverage and raise them for drivers who dropped coverage in the past. Consumer advocates raised about $200,000 to defeat the measure but were dramatically outspent by Joseph, who donated $16 million to the yes campaign. The Mercury General Corp. chairman contributed the same amount to a similar initiative that was defeated two years ago. In an October interview, the 91 year-old would not rule out a third attempt.

Calif. gets 200 EV charging stations in settlement SA N F R A NC I SCO — Federal energy regulators have approved a legal settlement between California and a New Jersey energy company that will see more than 200 electric vehicle charging stations get built around the state. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the settlement between the California Public Utilities Commission and a subsidiary of Princeton, N.J.-based NRG Energy Inc. The settlement came in response to lawsuits filed after California’s energy

crisis, when NRG and other companies overcharged Californians for power. The company has agreed to spend $100 million for the stations, and will pay the state another $20 million. The charging stations will be built by NRG subsidiary eVgo starting in early 2013, with 110 of them in the Los Angeles area and 55 in the San Francisco Bay area.

Advance Auto Parts 3Q profit falls on weaker sales

RICHMOND, Va. — Advance Auto Parts said Thursday that its thirdquarter net income fell about 15 percent as sales dipped and it spent more money to attract customers. The Roanoke, Va., seller of auto parts and batteries said it earned $89.5 million, or $1.21 per share, for the quarter ended Oct. 6, down from $105.5 million, or $1.41 per share, a year ago. Revenue fell less than one percent to $1.46 billion. Revenue at stores open at least a year decreased nearly 2 percent. That’s an important measure for retailers because it excludes results from newly opened or closed stores. The results matched previous third-quarter guidance provided by the company last month. Its shares rose 49 cents to $80.25 in morning trading Thursday. Advance Auto Parts faced “weak consumer demand” in both do-it-yourself and commercial sales, CEO Darren R. Jackson said in a conference call with investors. Jackson said volatility in gas prices played a role in consumer spending during the quarter. It also experienced softer sales in coldweather markets. -Associated Press
