Decorating with Christmas trees Melissa Rayworth The Associated Press For generations, the choice was simple: 1. Strap a live Christmas tree to the roof of your car, wrestle it into a tree stand at home and hope it wouldn’t fall over. Or, 2. Put up an artificial tree that was unmistakably fake. Fortunately, options have expanded, from realistic fake trees pre-lit with softly glowing LED lights to environmentally friendly, abstract “trees” made from reclaimed shipping pallets. Options for a real, live tree include “white glove” service that includes delivery and professional set-up. Here, three interior designers help sort out some options and share advice on stylishly decorating with holiday trees and branches, even in households where Christmas isn’t celebrated.
Exquisitely artificial Designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of Flynnside Out Productions, loves the look and scent of real trees. But he is “hands down, 100 percent on Team Artificial,” thanks to the convenience and range of today’s fake trees. White trees are “excellent for more elegant, sophisti-
cated spaces,” Flynn says. He layers on ornaments in shades of white and metallics “for a less-is-more, tone-on-tone look.” Designer Lee Kleinhelter, founder of the Pieces home decor store in Atlanta, agrees. She uses a highquality, fake white tree in her home because “it feels a little modern, and is a clean slate where I can use interesting objects to accessorize.” If you can’t quite imagine your handmade or handme-down ornaments on a sleek, white tree, consider getting a real tree for keepsake ornaments and putting a white tree in another location, perhaps near the front door, decked out in monochromatic ornaments. Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design for The Home Depot, says many Americans now use one fake tree and one real one. If white isn’t your style, Flynn recommends realistic fake green trees with a “woodsy, rustic” look, or fake green trees coated with fake white snow, which are called “flocked” trees. “Flocked trees add amazing texture and can really tone down the overall greenness of an artificial tree, making it a little softer,” he says. He has created flat, ab-

sides.” If you have a large “showstopper of a front window” that faces the street, Fishburne suggests placing the tree there. “There’s something really lovely about coming home to that big tree in the window,” she says. It’s easy to put tree lights on a timer so they glow on schedule each evening. Flynn agrees that “if you really want your tree to make an impact inside and outside, sticking with a room toward the front of the home is the way to go.” But for maximum enjoyment, he says, “it’s also wise to make sure it’s just as much of a focal point from adjacent rooms as it is inside the space and from outside of the house.”
Pre-lit LED trees save you the time and effort of stringing lights. Some models also resolve any arguments over whether to use white lights or colored ones, says Fishburne; you can buy LED-lit trees that let you switch between them. LED lights also don’t burn as hot as traditional bulbs, so The Associated Press / Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Sarah Dorio they may be a safer option, especially for rooms where This 2014 photo from Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles demonstrates how designer Brian Patrick Flynn uses children play and might try to touch the tree. “When I bare, rustic artificial trees to visually anchor dining was little,” Fishburne says, rooms while also adding interesting texture. “we knocked over a lot of Non-Christmas trees stract trees out of plywood, Depot is making it simpler trees.” All three designers mencovering them with festive to bring home a full-size tioned that it can be beautifabric secured with brass real tree with “white glove” Best locations ful to use undecorated trees nail heads. New twists on a holiday symbol for the home Kimberly Cook The Associated Press Say “wreath,” and the beloved evergreen standard comes to mind — unadorned or dressed for the holiday season with lights, bows, fruit or ornaments. Each year, however, brings more and more inventive versions of wreaths. Regional variations have become common, often in unexpected materials: driftwood wreaths with shells and starfish, for example, or fiery circles of Southeastern chili peppers. Today’s wreath might be a square, star or rectangle. Ignore ugly rumors about mulch: It won’t starve your plants, shrubs Lee Reich The Associated Press Rumor has it that mulching your garden beds or trees and shrubs could starve your plants. It’s a rumor that has circulated for the past 40 years or so, ever since mulching surged in popularity as a way to quell weeds and conserve water. Is there anything to it? If anything, you’d think that nutrients in mulches would help nourish plants, not starve them. The logic behind the starvation rumor goes like this: The two nutrients most needed by soil microorganisms are carbon and nitrogen. Wood chips, straw, sawdust and many other organic mulches are high in carbon but low in nitrogen. When

In this photo from Dec. 3, 2013, a gardener carts leaves to spread beneath trees and shrubs in New Paltz, N.Y. Mulch offers many benefits from a perspective of soil, plants and — because weeds are suppressed — also gardeners. soil microorganisms chew away on such mulches, decomposing them, they have to balance their carbon-rich diet with extra nitrogen, which they must find somewhere else. So they pull this nitrogen from the soil, and

go with all crimson or midnight blue. (www.save-oncrafts.com) If you can get your hands on a bucketful of acorns, glue them in rows on a wreath form. Leave them in their natural caramel hue and tie on a plaid or gingham flannel bow, or consider spraypainting the whole thing in a favorite color and add a coordinating tie. The 3-D symmetry of the rows looks great no matter what you do. Another option: Wrap a wreath frame in bold black and white ribbon. Or swathe it in tufts of navy tulle and tie with a red silk ribbon. Cover the frame with white paper doilies, adding fairy lights for white winter magic. No matter what your wreath’s made of, the message is one of welcome, comfort and holiday cheer.

Repurpose garage doors into walls with a view Brandpoint Have you ever admired a coffee table cleverly fabricated using a discarded door sitting on a frame? Or been surprised by the sight of an old refrigerator reborn as a bookshelf or TV cabinet? Even bathroom fixtures have been known to draw notice (and a snicker or two) when repurposed as garden containers. A number of homeowners are taking utilitarian home elements and transforming them with creative flair into stunning home designs. Even the venerable garage door is experiencing new life as interior room dividers, exterior walls and other purposes yet to be discovered. “Many homeowners are opening their homes to the great outdoors by using ga-
rage doors instead of sliding glass doors,” says Vickie Lents, director of marketing for Entrematic, a leading company in the garage door industry known for innovation and design. “It’s a particularly popular trend in coastal and mountain areas where the outdoor views are naturally incredible, allowing homeowners to enjoy the view from indoors as well as outdoors.” In addition to providing views of the outdoors, using garage doors as exterior walls provides the added benefit of offering a crossbreeze through the home in temperate climates. For many months of the year, a garage door that opens to the exterior can save on cooling costs. When you think about it, a garage door that opens to the exterior serves as an
Brandpoint
Garage doors aren’t just for garages anymore. enormous window. Garage doors with clear glass held in place by an aluminum grid system are the common standard in residential applications. Homeowners gravitate to glass garage doors when used as exterior and interior walls
Mulch Continued from D5 As soil microorganisms die, the nitrogen in their bodies is released back to the soil. There, it becomes available to plants once those microorganisms have used up enough soil carbon, “breathing” it out of the ground as carbon dioxide. Also, this scenario — plants being starved for nitrogen — holds true when you mix a load of high-carbon, organic material into the soil. But lay that same material on top of the ground as mulch and it’s a different ball game. Then, decomposition occurs mostly at the thin interface where the mulch touches the soil, and the rate of decomposition is much slower. So slow, in fact, that a steady state is reached where nitrogen is re-released at about the rate at which it is being
used for decomposition. The microorganisms are happy and the plants are happy. Still, that rumor that plants will suffer from high carbon mulches keeps going around, despite the field experience of agricultural researchers and gardeners. A garden, like any biological system, represents a complex interaction of energies, so generalizations don’t always hold. There are situations — rare — where that old mulch rumor may hold true. One such situation would be where you mulched with a very high-carbon, very lownitrogen material (sawdust, for example) on soil that is very low in nitrogen. Another situation would be where you planted a seed right into a high-carbon mulch. The young seedling would be starved of nitrogen until its roots hit the soil below.
Still, there’s no need to forsake the benefits of mulch in either of these situations. Just sprinkle on nitrogen fertilizer, such as soybean meal, to make up the deficiency. In most situations, there’s no need to do anything more than spread organic mulch right on the ground. In the coming months, it will insulate the soil against cold and then, when warm weather arrives, insulate it against heat. An organic mulch also softens the impact of raindrops, so water can percolate into the soil rather than run off. These mulches also enrich soil with humus, that witch’s brew of natural compounds that helps feed plants and beneficial soil organisms to fend off pests, quell weeds and improve plant water use. So don’t pay attention to those ugly rumors.
because of their clean, modern look. For interior use of garage doors, many architects and homeowners prefer using garage doors without electronic motors, which can be unsightly when suspended from the door’s track sys-
tem. Now, they can choose a track-less, spring-less and rail-less garage door system with an integrated opener for a state-of-the-art solution for the home: the Silvelox Trento Collection distributed by Entrematic. Unlike traditional garage doors that operate via a series of springs, rails and tracks along the ceiling that can be cumbersome on the interior of a home, the Trento Collection of garage doors showcase revolutionary technology and Italian design, featuring a patented overlap design that allows the door to open by folding neatly in half without ceiling hardware. This design eliminates all the clutter behind a typical garage door and allows for a clean interior space, perfect when the door is connected to interior
home living spaces. Whether they feature a modern or traditional operating system, garage doors can serve as more than windows to divide indoor living space from the outside. Interior designers and homeowners have gravitated toward the trend of using garage doors to divide room space as well. Particularly when used as interior room dividers, garage doors with frosted or tinted glass offer privacy when closed but can be opened to create expansive indoor space. “Garage doors make such a statement when incorporated into home designs. There’s instant intrigue and excitement when guests see them,” Lents says. “The doors are practical in function and offer the ‘wow factor’ that homeowners want.”

A crew clears debris from portions of a tree that collapsed across several properties in Tallahassee, Fla., Nov. 11. Even healthy trees can fail because of their size and weight. The role of a landscape inspector is to locate trees with predisposing faults that can be pruned or removed before causing any damage.
Welcome to
The Associated Press
Buying a home? Do a landscape inspection Dean Fosdick The Associated Press Prudent house hunters usually await the results of a professional inspection before buying their dream home. All too often, though, one of the biggest contributors to a home’s value is neglected: the landscape. And that can prove costly. “I feel bad telling people who’ve already put their life’s savings into a new house that their sprinkler system is outdated or was installed wrong,” said Jeff Wolfe of Sun Wolfe Irrigation Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona. The company’s services include irrigation and outdoor lighting inspection. “Now they’re facing big expenditures,” he said. “Depending on the size of the property, costs for a new irrigation system can vary from $2,000 to $20,000. The same goes for lighting systems.” Landscape problems are more costly to correct when deferred, said Bruce Avery, an arborist with AAA Tree Experts Inc. in Tallahassee, Florida. “And the longer you wait, the more expensive it gets.” And inspections are increasingly important now
that families are making more use of their outdoor living areas, he said. Pre-purchase landscape inspections should include such things as retaining walls, patios and decks, outdoor kitchens, water features, fireplaces and fire pits, irrigation systems, fencing, pools and spas, lighting, playgrounds, lawns and trees, Avery said. Regional considerations vary. “If you live in California, you’d probably want to know about wildfire hazards,” Avery said. “In Florida, hurricane prevention.” “Up North, ice and snow and their maintenance activities can cause landscape and hardscape damages,” he said. “Gulf Coast areas from Alabama to Texas are fighting invasive termites that attack healthy trees, and a similar pest in the Northeast coastal areas is expanding inland at a fast pace.” Large trees can be beautiful but also problematic, Avery said. “Mature trees can add significant value to a property,” he said. “Unfortunately, with age, stresses from a number of factors can lead to dangerous and unhealthy trees (and the risks) are not
evident to the average consumer.” Don’t ignore the ground. Get the soil tested before you buy, said Richard Koenig, a professor, associate dean and director of Washington State University Extension. “It is difficult if not impossible to address a soil problem after perennial plants, irrigation systems and hardscape (sidewalks and such) are installed,” Koenig said. “Poor drainage, high or low pH and salinity are the most common problems. In rare situations, soils can be contaminated with heavy metals or pesticides from previous industrial activity or an accidental spill,” he said. If landscape problems are discovered during an inspection, then those issues can be passed along to the homeowners for a suggested fix, be included in the price negotiations or become total deal-busters. “There are so many elements of the landscape that consumers have no idea what is hidden,” Avery said. “A wise homeowner or prospective buyer should always involve a qualified arborist or landscape professional to help answer their questions.”

Timeless interior design perfect for protecting kitchen upgrade Brandpoint Kitchens are the heart of the home. It’s where you prepare meals, help your kids with homework and entertain guests. It’s the room in the house where everyone gathers, where memories are made, and, with solid investment, can single-handedly increase the value of your home and help you build more of a nest egg. Even if you’re considering selling your home, all eyes of prospective buyers will inevitably be on the kitchen. “When making investments in your home, the kitchen is unanimously the best place to start,” says Nate Berkus, renowned decorator, designer and artistic advisor for LG Studio appliances. “For me, a great kitchen is one that feels timeless. To accomplish that, reach for what feels classic for the space like subway tiles and stainless steel, and allow the elements that tell your story to come through in the nonpermanent fixtures like the furniture, fabrics and details.” Here are Berkus’ five tips for designing a forever kitchen that will sustain its value, whether you’re looking to put your house on the market or simply updating it for your family’s enjoyment:
Paint I don’t know why people always grimace when I say to paint wood. It isn’t a cardinal sin, especially in the kitchen. Tearing out cabinets isn’t always an option, but painting, while a bit of work, is one of my favorite things to do. Reach for black. It sets off all the appliances and makes for a dramatic change.
Brighten with lights I tell my clients this all the time — lighting is one of the most important decisions you can make in any room, including the kitchen. I love vintage pendant lights over an island or table. Since lighting can often add to a dated vibe of the space, swapping it out for something more timeless immediately makes the space appear more modernized — perfect for illuminating any potential buyers.
The long haul Making over a kitchen is no small feat. It’s expensive and time consuming. Trust me when I say I get it. So, your best asset is information. Start building that Pinterest board to identify what you like. Once you have that, you can start to
attach costs. Mine always starts with what’s permanent like the cabinets, appliances and tiles. These, along with the appropriate team to help you make and install all of it, are your best investments. From there, consider ways that you can have what you want at a price you can live with. I’ve seen the most amazing islands fashioned from unique things like a farm table, or hutches that are free standing on a wall as opposed to extending your cabinets. These can all be ways to get a big look without the big price tag.
Consider technology
The home of the future is actually here today. It’s one that is wired for sound, TV and Wi-Fi. Simply put, our kitchen island is command Brandpoint central for more than meal Nate Berkus is a renowned decorator, designer and artistic adviser for LG Studio appliances. prep. For many of us it’s also the office. So, to add value to Certified this space, don’t undervalue Technicians what will make life easier, like outlets that have USB We service ports in the wall and island, What We sell charging docks and TVs. We do so much more in this space than cook. So, to add value, add ways for you be connected ... just not at the J.L. Ruth Electric - The Generator kInG... Ask for Joe! dinner table.
A timeless look When it comes to making big design decisions in your kitchen, put aside trends and go with timeless and elegant. Reach for what feels classic like white subway tiles, brass and stainless steel appliances — things that will look as good 10 years from now as they do today. The entire LG Studio line of premium, built-in appliances, for exBrandpoint ample, was designed with a signature look, feel and style “When making investments in your home, the kitchen is that will easily transition unanimously the best place to start,” says designer Nate Berkus. with you through the years.
