Hyundai Genesis: Luxury without paying for name The “new” luxury car on the block is now six years into its initial run, and Hyundai has proven, with robust sales, that you don’t need a decades-old badge and high prices to compete in the luxury sedan market. Transforming the former econo-box manufacturer into a credible purveyor of quality automobiles, Genesis combines elegant design with solid fuel efficiency, strong driving dynamics and spirited performance while keeping the price under $40,000, although my test vehicle, overflowing with option packages, came in at a hair over $40k (see pricing below). Hyundai refreshed the Genesis in 2012, and we are hearing that the badge will release an all-new Genesis for 2015. In the meantime, they are staying with a very popular and aggressively priced four-door luxury sedan that doesn’t need a high surcharge other nameplates demand for their logo. For 2014, Genesis has finetuned its steering by way of a more efficient electrohydraulic power steering with enhanced feel for better road compliance. And the 3.8 model gets more standard items, including daytime running lights and 18-inch alloy wheels that replace the previous year’s 17-inch alloy wheel for a more premium appearance.

Aggressive architecture Genesis looks chic with an aggressive front fascia, large intake openings, LED lighting accents and dark chrome headlamp inserts. In addition, the mirrors incorporate power-folding and puddle

lamp functions, while the side window trim exploits a sporty brushed-aluminum finish. The rear view shows off dual asymmetrical exhaust tips cleanly integrated into the bumper fascia for a chic appearance. Weighing in at a confident 3,889 pounds (curbweight), Genesis builds on European angularity with high tensile steel unibody construction. My Caspian Black Genesis test model looked the part of a luxury sedan, with a Jet Black interior and with suppleness surrounding its 196.3-inch length, 74.4-inch width and 58.3inch height on a 115.6-inch wheelbase.

Power, fuel-efficiency My review vehicle was powered by a direct-injection 3.8-liter V-6 Lambda engine that produces 333 horsepower and 291 pounds-foot of torque. It also has a high compression ratio of 11.5-to-1 for greater thermal efficiency and it delivers a higher specific output (87.6 hp/liter) than its normally aspirated premium luxury competitors. The upper-scale 5.0 R Spec model muscles up with a 5.0-liter Tau V-8 engine that stampedes out 429 horses and 376 pounds-foot of torque. This setup features a highpressure direct injection

system that increases power and torque while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Getting back to the 3.8 that powered my test ride, it employs Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, variable induction, an allaluminum block and heads, steel timing chain and iridium-tipped spark plugs. The system develops good power while significantly reducing emissions; and a variable vane oil pump fitted to precisely match oil pressure with engine lubrication requirements increases efficiency at all engine speeds. With quietness, rather than throatiness, the 3.8 V-6 accelerates with little hesitation, passes with authority and sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, en route to a 14.7-second quarter-mile — probably 1.5 seconds longer than the 5.0liter runs the course. My 3.8 liter was EPA rated at 18 mpg/city and 27 mpg/ highway, about 3 mpg better than the larger engine’s estimates. My mixed-use examination averaged 21.1 mpg. Steering was compliant and the ride was smooth, although braking was a bit soft. However, driving it in wintry conditions, I was disappointed that there was no all-wheel-drive option offered.

Functional interior The cabin is organized, functional and filled with high-tech and quality materials. The interior provides ample comfort with 40.4 inches of front head room, 37.7 inches in the rear seats, 44.3 inches of legroom in

row one and 38.6 inches for row two, with shoulder room of 58.3 and 57.9. The compartment offers interior air filtration, dual zone climate controls for driver and passenger, memorized settings for two drivers, trip computer, audio and cruise controls on the steering wheel, Bluetooth wireless data link for handsfree phone and real-time traffic, and a ton of optional amenities (see below). Genesis also provides active and passive safety features to help prevent acc i d e n ts a n d m a x i m i ze occupant protection in the event of a collision. Standard on Genesis are Electronic Stability Control, eight air bags and electronic active head restraints. The 2014 Genesis 3.8 Sedan starts at $35,200 ($1,000 more than last year), and the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec is base priced at $47,400 (an increase of $600). The Premium Package added $4,400 (saving $400 from last year) for power tilt-and-slide sunroof, tailored leatherwrapped dash and door trim inserts, ultra-premium leather seating surfaces, in-

Kia doesn’t lose Soul in upgrades By Ann M. Job For The Associated Press The animated and dapper hamsters in Kia’s television ads aren’t the only ones who ride comfortably in Kia’s newly revamped Soul fivedoor hatchback. People of nearly all sizes and budgets can find the five-passenger, 2014 Soul to be a satisfying small car. For 2014, it has a more responsive engine, more rigid body, ritzier passenger compartment and greater interior room than its predecessor. Buyers just have to like riding in an expressively “mod” box. Starting retail price for the 2014 Soul is affordable at less than $16,000. With fold-down rear seats, the Soul has as much cargo space — 61.3 cubic feet — as a small sport utility vehicle. Gasoline mileage can be better than that of an SUV. The test Soul with automatic averaged 26 miles per gallon in combined city/highway driving without fuss. Best of all, the 2014 model is the first Soul to earn top, five out of five stars in U.S. government crash tests in both frontal and side crash tests. Previous model year Souls got only four stars in frontal crash tests. No wonder the Soul far outsells its major competition— the boxy Scion xB and Nissan Cube. Specifically, 118,079 Souls were sold in the United States in calendar 2013, up 2 percent from the previous year. In comparison, Scion xB sales last year fell to 17,849 and Cube sales fell to 5,461. The Soul is competitively priced. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $15,695 for a base, 2014 Soul with 130-horsepower four cylinder and sixspeed manual transmission. The lowest starting retail price for a 2014 Soul with

FACT SHEET 2014 Kia Soul Exclaim BASE PRICE: $14,900 for base model; $18,200 for Plus; $20,300 for Exclaim. PRICE AS TESTED: $26,195. TYPE: Front-engine, front-wheel drive, five-passenger hatchback. ENGINE: 2-liter, double overhead cam, gasoline direct injection four cylinder. MILEAGE: 23 mpg (city), 31 mpg (highway). TOP SPEED: NA LENGTH: 163 inches. WHEELBASE: 101.2 inches. CURB WEIGHT: 2,837 pounds. BUILT AT: South Korea. OPTIONS: Sun and sound package (includes automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, navigation system) $2,600; whole shebang package (includes leather seat trim, high-intensity discharge headlights with automatic leveling, push button start with smart key, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel) $2,500. DESTINATION CHARGE: $795. automatic is $1,800 more, or $17,495. There is a larger, more powerful four cylinder, too. Starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a 2014 Soul Plus model with this 164-horsepower direct injection powerplant is $18,995. The only transmission with the uplevel engine is a six-speed automatic. All Souls come standard with heated outside mirrors, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, two 12-volt power connections, sunglasses holder with dual maplights above the front seats, air

Associated Press

Starting retail price for the 2014 Soul is affordable at less than $16,000. conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel and power windows and door locks. There’s even a free, three-month subscription to Sirius/XM satellite radio for every 2014 Soul owner. In comparison, the 2014 Scion xB has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $17,725 with 158-horsepower four cylinder and five-speed manual transmission and $18,675 with four-speed automatic. The base, 2014 xB includes turn signals in the outside mirrors, remote entry and cruise control, which are not on the base Soul. But the base xB does not have heated outside mirrors. Meantime, the base, 2014 Nissan Cube S starts at $17,570 with 122-horsepower four cylinder and six-speed manual. The base, 2014 Cube with continuously variable transmission that operates like an automatic has a starting retail price of $18,570. The base Cube includes remote keyless entry, cruise control and premium-look

electroluminescent gauges that the base Soul does not have. But the Cube’s steering wheel only tilts and does not telescope in and out. Many people don’t realize the Soul was Kia’s second best-selling vehicle in the United States, after the mid-size Optima sedan, last year. But it’s tough to beat the Soul’s easily maneuverable size, flexible cargo and people-hauling capability and value-for-the-money features. The test Soul, for example, included remote keyless entry, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Kia’s UVO infotainment system, rearview camera, navigation system, panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, leather-covered seats, push button start, illuminated lighting at the audio speakers, heated steering wheel and more for just more than $26,000. The Soul’s box shape is changed just slightly for 2014, and most observers didn’t notice the changes on

the test vehicle. Specifically, the Soul is about a half-inch shorter in height than before, so it’s a couple inches shorter than the Cube. This makes the Soul feel less tippy than the Cube in curves and turns but still allows for ample, 39.5 inches of headroom in front and rear seats. The 2014 Scion xB has more headroom than either competitor— 40 inches in the front seats and 41.2 inches in the back. Back-seat legroom is generous in this segment, and for 2014, Kia expanded the Soul’s wheelbase — the distance from the middle of one wheel on one side of the vehicle to the middle of the other wheel on that same side — to improve interior space. As a result, legroom measures 40.9 inches in the front seat and 39.1 inches in the back seat. It’s worth noting that the Soul’s seat cushions sit up a comfortable distance from the car floor, so passengers don’t drop down to settle onto the seats. This higher

GM creates new position to Arizona bill seeks help spearhead safety issues to allow Tesla to By Tom Krisher Associated Press DETROIT — General Motors has named a 40-year engineer as its new safety chief, placing a single person in charge of recalls and other safety issues as it deals with a huge compact car recall that has damaged the company’s reputation. The move, announced Tuesday by CEO Mary Barra, comes after revelations that GM knew about a deadly ignition switch problem in 1.6 million compact cars at least 11 years ago, but failed to recall them until last month. The problem has been linked to more than a dozen deaths in the Chevrolet Cobalt and five other models. Barra on Tuesday named engineer Jeff Boyer to the new global post. She says it gives GM a single safety leader with access to senior managers and the board. Boyer is responsible for development of safety systems, vehicle testing, and safety of cars after they are sold, including recalls. “If there are any obstacles in his way, Jeff has the authority to clear them,” Barra said in a statement. “If he needs any additional resources, he will get them.” Two congressional committees and the Justice Department are investigating

The company has admitted knowing as early as 2003 that the switches can unexpectedly shut down car engines and cause drivers to lose control. Despite multiple company investigations, the cars were not recalled until last month. In one of the investigations that didn’t lead to a recall, GM failed to consider four fatal accidents in one of the models. “Something went wrong with our process in this instance, and terrible things happened,” Barra said Monday in a video posted

on GM’s media website. O n Fe b. 1 3, G M a n nounced the recall of more than 780,000 Cobalts and Pontiac G5s (model years 2005-2007). Two weeks later it added 842,000 Ion compacts (2003-2007), and Chevrolet HHR SUVs and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars (20062007). All of the recalled cars have the same ignition switches. The company said the i g n i t i o n sw i tc h e s ca n wear from heavy, dangling keys. If the key chains are bumped or people drive on rough surfaces, the switches

can suddenly change from the “run” position to “accessory” or “off.” That cuts off power-assisted steering and brakes and could cause drivers to lose control. Also, the air bags may not inflate in a crash and protect the driver and passengers. The company is urging people not to put anything on their key rings until the switches are replaced. The recall crisis quickly ended Barra’s honeymoon as CEO. She took over the top job on Jan. 15, becoming the first woman to lead a major global automaker. Since 2011, Boyer had been executive director of engineering operations and systems development. Before that, he headed global interior engineering and safety performance. In that post, he was responsible for certifying GM vehicle safety and crashworthiness, the company said. Boyer started with GM in 1974 as a college student at Kettering University in Flint. He has an electrical engineering degree from Kettering and a master of business administration degree from Michigan State University. On Monday, GM issued new recalls of 1.5 million vehicles, part of an effort to assure buyers that it’s moving faster to fix safety defects in its cars and trucks.

Car collection dating back decades up for auction KUNA, Idaho (AP) — A southwestern Idaho collection of more than 300 vehicles as well as car parts collected over decades was for sale in an online auction that ran through Friday. Clarence Haken collected and stored the vehicles at the old Mora schoolhouse east of Kuna. He died three years ago. “This was his heaven on Earth,” his daughter, Linda

DeBaets, told KTVB-TV. “Fix them up. Put them back on the road. Make my dad’s dreams come true.” The cars, in varying states of disarray, are spread over seven acres. The vehicles are from the 1930s through the 1970s, all American made. The value of the cars and parts are estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. “There are some vehicles

out here that are probably only worth a couple hundred dollars for parts, and there’s some that are worth a couple thousand dollars because they’re whole,” auctioneer Kyle Musick said. “There’s a lot of ’40s and ’50s Chevys and Fords.” One of the vehicles is a delivery truck originally designed for the military during World War II. The one in Kuna is thought to be only

one of seven known to exist. “It was like he understood cars,” said DeBaets, noting her father could often be found tinkering with them. “He was just a natural at it.” Musick said he and his staff spent six months collecting vehicle identification numbers and sorting through the property. They catalogued the entire collection for the online auction.

skip auto dealers By Bob Christie Associated Press PHOENIX — Electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors would be allowed to sell cars in Arizona without establishing a dealer network under a bill approved by a state Senate committee Wednesday. House Bill 2123 is strongly opposed by traditional auto manufacturers and dealers, who argue that Tesla wants to operate outside the normal rules that require manufacturers to sell cars through dealers. They say allowing sales directly from an automaker could leave consumers in the lurch if the company goes belly-up. “Tesla is asking for a special exemption for them to have a separate set of rules for their electric cars,” Mike Gardner, a lobbyist for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, told the Senate Commerce, Energy and Military Committee. “What we’re opposed to is allowing one of our competitors to go around the dealer network and sell directly to consumers. We think we should all be treated the same.” But Rep. Warren Petersen, the bill’s sponsor, said dealers and manufacturers are trying to stifle innovation. “This is a great opportunity for us to send a message that we welcome business and we welcome Tesla here to Arizona,” said Petersen, RGilbert. “We shouldn’t deny our consumers from being able to purchase a product if they want.” Tesla Motors Inc. has a showroom in Scottsdale but can’t sell cars there under a 2000 law. Instead, it takes orders online. Arizona is also one of four states vying for a new lithium-ion battery factory that would supply the company’s Fremont, Calif., assembly

plant. Others are New Mexico, Nevada and Texas. Tesla says it will invest $2 billion in the 10-million-square-foot factory, which will cost between $4 billion and $5 billion. Despite Arizona being in the running for the plant, lawmakers said the bill was unrelated. “I don’t want to send a message, even though this is not a quid pro quo,” said Sen. Bob Worsley, R-Mesa. “I want the message from our state to be that we welcome the opportunity to work with large successful companies with this size market cap.” A second bill approved by the committee expands a $3,000-per-worker tax credit program for companies that add jobs by removing a requirement that the employees be continuously employed to get the credit for three years. House Bill 2272 would allow the company to continue claiming the credit for all three years if the worker is replaced. The Tesla sales bill was originally about an unrelated subject, but it was amended Wednesday by Republican Sen. John McComish, the Senate majority leader, to take up the Tesla language. It would allow a company to sell vehicles directly to consumers if it only makes electric vehicles and has a service center in the state to handle repairs and warranty issues. McComish calls it a “preemptive strike” against future laws that could outlaw Tesla’s operations completely. “What has happened ... is that in some states, they are moving to outlaw that kind of operation,” McComish said. “But I think we should be about opportunities for innovation rather than stifling innovation.”

This higher

seat position makes it easy to enter and exit the Soul and allows for the driver to have good views forward through the windows of cars that are in front of the Soul in traffic. Plus, the glass on the reardoor windows goes down all the way. Most Souls come with the uplevel, 2-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder.

This higher

seat position makes it easy to enter and exit the Soul and allows for the driver to have good views forward through the windows of cars that are in front of the Soul in traffic. Plus, the glass on the reardoor windows goes down all the way. Most Souls come with the uplevel, 2-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder. It’s gasoline direct injected and mated only to a six-speed automatic. Performance has been improved for more “oomph” at lower engine rpms. Torque peaks at 151 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm, and with the Soul being such a lightweight car — weighing just 2,700 to 2,850 pounds — the powerplant did a good job of providing a spunky feel. Still, the four cylinder buzzed loudly when pressed to accelerate hard. The tester averaged better than the federal government ratings of 23/31 mpg and translated into a range of 369 miles on a single, 14.2-gallon tank.
