The 2014 Hyundai Elantra is shown.
Refreshed Elantra offers tweaked body, new apps By Mike Blake
Hyundai Elantra has been an award-winner and a head-turner since its “fluid sculpture” and increased elegance and tech began with its fifth generation in 2011. A mid-generation refresh has enhanced Elantra for 2014 with extensive design upgrades and a more powerful 2.0-liter GDI engine in the new Sport trim. A treasure trove of new features has been added to augment the signature roominess and safety that have made Elantra a favorite of those who bestow awards for automotive value. More than 75 Elantra major sub-systems are new or redesigned. The 2014 Elantra receives all-new front and rear exterior designs, along with interior styling upgrades, while extensive technology upgrades improve ergonomics for the entire Elantra Sedan lineup.
A carload of new tech New technologies built into the 2014 Elantra include the application of the next-generation navigation and audio technology, which feature simpler user interfaces, enhanced voice recognition commands, improved navigation screens and available Pandora internet radio. A 4.3-inch color touchscreen with integrated rearview camera is now available on the entry level SE, in the Preferred Package, and as standard equipment on the Elantra Sport and Limited. Also new to Elantra Limited is Hyundai’s Blue Link and Assurance Connected Care safety, service and infotainment telematics system. Other new items for 2014 include a rename for the GLS trim to SE, a new 4.3inch color LCD touchscreen audio with rearview camera, new dual HVAC controls, Hill-Start Assist Control and driver’s blind spot mirror.
Multiple design tweaks The refreshed 2014 Elantra has also benefitted from numerous exterior design changes. The front and rear styling have been altered

A 4.3-inch color touchscreen with integrated rearview camera is now available on the entry level SE, in the Preferred Package, and as standard equipment on the Elantra Sport and Limited. for a more stable, balanced look. Up front, a new openmouth lower bumper, grille, more technical fog lights and projector head lamps with LED accents add a dynamic, precise feel to Elantra. The L-shaped fog light graphic stabilizes the front end and gives the car a more grounded look, while maintaining a greater sense of width that coaxes the eye to the corners. From the profile, a chrome belt line molding and new sets of 17-inch alloy wheels on the Elantra Limited and Sport accentuate the Elantra’s premium image. A new black, two-tone rear diffuser also sharpens its appearance. I drove Elantra in its Limited trim, and it offered a length of 179.1 inches, width of 69.9 inches and height of 56.3 inches in height on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, with a minimum ground clearance of 5.3 inches. The vehicle weighs in with a curbweight of 2,943 lbs.
Light and efficient engine Elantra moves down the road via a 1.8-liter fourcylinder engine rated at 145 horsepower and 130 lbs.-ft. of torque. The Sport version powers up with a 2.0liter plant that is rated at 173 hp and 154 lbs.-ft. of torque. My test ride’s 1.4 power plant with an aluminum block and head and crank is 30 percent lighter than an iron block — some 74 pounds lighter — while still providing comparable strength. The system, working in concert with a 6-speed automatic trans-
mission, is EPA estimated at 27 mpg in city driving, 37 mpg on the highway and an average of 31 mpg. My test run, hindered by road slush, snow and slowing highway traffic, averaged 31.2 mpg. The Larger Sport engine is estimated at 24/35/28. Elantra’s cabin is quiet and the performance is eager when deployed, but a bit hesitant. Understeer is still a battle during quick maneuvers, but the sedan hugs the road with little sway. Acceleration kicks in after a beat and it accomplished an offthe-line sprint to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds en route to a 17.1 quarter-mile (hand-timed). On the highway, Elantra mastered uphill grades, and has plenty of mid-range power, but passing has to be telegraphed a bit due to response time. The front suspension does a solid job smoothing out winter road ruts and irregularities with independent, MacPherson struts, coil springs, hydraulic twintube gas-filled shock absorbers, and 22-mm stabilizer bar with torsion axle with gas-filled, hydraulic monotube shock absorbers and coil springs in the rear.
The Elantra Limited cabin is intuitive entertaining, family-oriented and comfortable, with front headroom of 40 inches in the front row and 37.1 inches in row two. Front legroom is a stretched-out 43.6 inches in the front, but a confining 33.1 inches for row-two passengers. Shoulder room
is generous throughout with 55.9 inches up front and 54.8 inches in the rear. A top safety pick last year, Elantra is built with strong unibody construction, front and rear crumple zones and internal dual beams in its rear doors. Additional safety features include six air bags, vehicle stability management, electronic stability control and traction control system, anti-lock braking system with brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, 4-wheel disc ABS brakes and tire pressure monitoring system. The 2014 Hyundai Elantra in Base SE trim starts at $17,200; the Elantra Sport starts at $21,700 and the Elantra Limited I reviewed, started at $21,650. The Technology Package added $2750 for a Navigation system with 7-inch screen, rearview camera, 360-watt premium audio with external amplifier, dual automatic temperature control with CleanAir Ionizer and defogger, automatic headlamps, proximity key entry with electronic push button start and engine immobilizer. A rear spoiler added $295, Carpeted floor mats added $100 and Freight added $810 for a final invoice of $25,605. Visit www.CarlisleEvents. com for more on the automotive hobby. Nearly 20 months after delivering the first all-electric Model S sedan to customers, Tesla Motors is narrowing its losses as sales of its cars continue to climb. Tesla said Wednesday that it lost $16.3 million, or 13 cents a share, in the fourth quarter, on revenue of $615.2 million. That compares with a loss of $89.9 million on $306.3 million in sales for the same quarter last year. For the year, Tesla reported losses of $74 million on total revenue of $2 billion, compared with a $396.2 million loss on $413.3 million in sales in 2012, when Tesla began delivering its vehicles to customers. But the automaker gave a rosy outlook on production and deliveries of its cars this year, especially overseas, which cheered investors. “We expect to deliver over 35,000 Model S vehicles in 2014, representing a 55 percent increase over 2013,” Elon Musk, Tesla’s chairman and chief executive, and Deepak Ahuja, the chief financial officer, wrote in a letter to shareholders. Last year, in its first full year of production, Tesla sold 22,477 of its Model S sedans. It plans to produce 1,000 cars a week by the end of the year, up from its current rate of 600 a week. The supply of battery cells, though, will “continue to constrain our production in the first half of the year, but will improve significantly in the second half of 2014,” Musk and Ahuja wrote. Shares of the stock, which closed at $193.64 at the end of trading Wednesday, rose more than 10 percent in after-hours trading. Tesla cautioned that it faced significantly higher capital expenses as it grows. International expansion into Asia and Europe will be driving much of that growth, with combined sales in those regions to be almost twice that of North America by the end of the year, the company said. Tesla said it planned to deliver its first vehicles to China this spring and “make substantial investments in China this year as
we add new stores, service centers and a Supercharger network.” “Based on current trends, it seems unlikely we will be able to satisfy demand in China this year,” Musk said in a conference call with analysts Wednesday. Also this spring, Tesla plans to begin entering right-hand-drive markets including Australia, Britain, Hong Kong and Japan. Tesla said it expected to have prototypes of its second model, the Model X electric crossover utility vehicle, on the road by the end of the year and start delivery to customers in the spring of 2015. “Model X demand is very high,” Musk said, “even though there’s zero marketing.” The Model X could double Tesla’s total sales if the automaker introduces it in the next 12 months, said Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book. “But the real potential for volume sales lies in the sub$40,000 Model E compact sedan that’s rumored,” Brauer said. Tesla executives declined to specify when the cheaper sedan might be developed but said the company would “very shortly” be ready to give details on the Tesla Giga factory, which will help the company cut the costs of its battery packs and accelerate its pace of innovation. “With this facility, we feel highly confident of being able to create a compelling and affordable electric car in approximately three years,” Musk and Ahuja wrote. Analysts echoed investors’ sentiments. “I think they’re in a good place,” said Efraim Levy, senior automotive equity analyst at S&P Capital IQ. “The big issue for the company is not so much execution but valuation. We’re bullish on performance.” But as sales surge, Tesla continues to contend with concerns over fires that have broken out in several of its car batteries, and the safety of its wall chargers. In January, Tesla recalled about 29,000 wall chargers after the adapter, cord or wall outlet caught fire in an Irvine, Calif., garage. Then this month, a second garage fire, in Toronto, was reported, though it is unclear how it occurred.
European auto sales rise for a fifth straight month By David Jolly New York Times News Service PA R I S — E u r o p e a n auto sales rose for a fifth straight month in January, an industry report showed Tuesday, as the Continent’s mass-market automakers led a modest but broad expansion. New car registrations, a proxy for sales, rose 5.5 percent from January 2013, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association reported from Brussels. Sales were led by Volkswagen, Renault and PSA Peugeot Citroën. The January figure, largely in line with expectations, added to growing confidence that the European Union passenger car market has finally passed the worst, as buyers — many driven by a need to replace older models — return amid a slow economic recovery. Although the market has now been ticking steadily upward since bottoming out in August, the association cautioned that in absolute terms, the roughly 936,000 vehicles sold in January marked the second-lowest volume recorded since it began tracking the data in 2003. That means the January 2013 figure was the lowest and thus a low base for comparison. The market last year shrank 1.7 percent, to just 11.9 million units, the fewest since 1995, but analysts expect growth this year in the low single digits. Ana-
lysts say high unemployment — 12 percent in the eurozone — as well as demographic and cultural shifts make it unlikely the market will return to its precrisis levels before the end of the decade. All the major markets in the 28 nations of the European Union grew, the association said. Spain and Britain continued to expand, both at a 7.6 percent rate. Germany, the biggest EU market, grew 7.2 percent, and Italy 3.2 percent. France managed to grow 0.5 percent. Carlos Da Silva, an analyst with IHS Automotive, wrote in a research note that “in absolute terms we are still contemplating very low volumes,” with January having historically been a month with sales “easily above the one million mark.” The upward trend of the last few months “remains valid and is now pointing to future growth,” Da Silva said, noting that even the Italian market grew in January, its first back-to-back increase in four years. “We are not using the words rebound or rebirth on purpose here. The fact is we anticipate a quite winding road ahead.” Sales of Volkswagen Group, the largest European carmaker, rose a solid 8.9 percent in January, with stronger sales across all major brands. PSA Peugeot Citroën, the French automaker that ranks as Europe’s No. 2, posted sales 7.4 percent higher.

The supply of battery cells, though, will “continue to constrain our production in the first half of the year, but will improve significantly in the second half of 2014,” Musk and Ahuja wrote. Tesla cautioned that it faced significantly higher capital expenses as it grows. International expansion into Asia and Europe will be driving much of that growth, with combined sales in those regions to be almost twice that of North America by the end of the year, the company said.

Sleek FR-S is sportiest Scion By Ann M. Job Associated Press The sportiest car in Toyota’s Scion family, the 2014 FR-S, is a fun-to-drive, four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive coupe that looks more expensive than its $25,455 starting price tag. Even better, the 2014 FRS earned top, five out of five stars in overall federal government crash tests. And, considering its tidy size, coupe body style, rear-drive propulsion and 200-horsepower engine, the FR-S has no direct competition except for its Subaru BRZ twin. As an example, the nimble-handling FR-S is much smaller and lighter than a rear-drive, 2014 Chevrolet Camaro coupe and doesn’t have a six cylinder engine. At the same time, the sleek, low-to-the-pavement FR-S looks downright sexy compared with a sport-oriented, 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe that’s frontwheel drive. Still, few people will want to even attempt to sit in the minimal and carved-out back seats in the FR-S. And big cargo won’t fit in the shallow FR-S trunk. In addition, Consumer Reports rates the reliability of the FR-S as below average. FR-S stands for front engine, rear wheel drive and sport, and this pretty well sums up what buyers get. There are no FR-S trim levels — just choices on how to customize a new FR-S with Toyota Racing Development dual exhaust, rear spoiler lip and other items. The biggest decision is whether to get the base, sixspeed manual transmission — with starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge of $25,455 — or the six-speed automatic that comes with steering wheelmounted paddle shifters at a starting retail price of $26,555. Meantime, the 2014 Subaru BRZ, which was engineered with the FRS, uses the same Subaru “boxer” engine and is built at the same assembly plant in Japan, starts at $26,390 with manual. Toyo ta ow n s p a r t o f Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries. FR-S prices compare with the $24,550 starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a base, 2014 Camaro coupe with 323-horsepower V-6 and six-speed manual. They also compare with the $25,545 starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a base, 2014 Mini Cooper Coupe with 121-horsepower four cylinder and six-speed manual. rear-drive Scion. Rearwheel drive is considered an asset for sporty handling. The only other Scion coupe, the tC, is frontwheel drive and has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $19,965 for a base, 2014 tC with 179-horsepower four cylinder and six-speed manual. During calendar 2013, tC sales declined 16 percent to 19,094 from a year earlier, while sales of the FRS rose to 18,327. The FR-S was the only Scion to post sales gains last year. FR-S sales in the United States last year were more than twice what the Subaru BRZ tallied. The FR-S makes a solid first impression with its expressive exterior that makes the car look like it’s in motion even when it’s standing still. Some people think the FR-S resembles Honda’s S2000 sports car on the outside, while others liken it to earlier Porsches. Both comments are high praise for Scion, which is Toyota’s brand for young, budgetconscious buyers. Enthusiasts of any age, however, will enjoy this car’s combination of balance and agility. The test car stuck like g l u e to t h e pave m e n t , though it was not shod with grippy, fat performance tires. The FR-S took curved
highway onramps with amazing composure even as speeds picked up along the way. There was nary any body lean in this lowslung car, so a driver feels confident on curves and in turns. The electric power steering was quickly responsive in a natural way and never felt artificial the way some electric systems do. The car’s light weight — the FR-S weighs just 2,758 pounds with manual transmission — accounted for a satisfying “scoot” feeling, even though torque from the 2-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder peaks at 151 foot-pounds starting at 6,400 rpm. There is considerable road and engine noise, however, and the ride can feel rough on broken pavement. Inside the FR-S, front seats are sport buckets and covered in premium fabric to help hold driver and passenger in place during driving. In the test car, these seats were well cushioned and comfortable. Everyone rides low to the ground in the FR-S and gets good looks at the tailpipes of big pickups. The FR-S roofline is low on this 4.2-foot-tall vehicle. So, getting in and out requires dexterity and care so heads don’t bump at the low door opening. Even the side windows seem a bit constricted, height-wise, and views out
the side rear are blocked by thick rear window pillars. No rearview camera is offered by the factory for the FR-S, however. The small, sporty-sized steering wheel and an instrument panel where the largest and centermost gauge is the tachometer, not the speedometer, are perfect in this car. To help keep an eye on the FR-S speeds, a sizable, digital display inside the tach’s circle shows the car’s speed in bright orange color. The six-speed manual in the test FR-S had short, satisfying throws. Premium unleaded gasoline is required, meaning a full, 13.2 gallons in the tank at today’s prices can cost nearly $50. Intriguingly, though it was driven in spirited fashion during much of the test drive, the test FR-S averaged 26.2 miles per gallon in combined city/highway travel. This was a bit better than the federal government’s 25 mpg estimate for city/highway travel for a manual transmission FRS. The automatic model is rated higher — 25 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. For 2014, a 6.1inch touchscreen audio display is standard on all FR-S cars. It doesn’t include satellite radio but includes AM/FM/ HD radio with Bluetooth audio streaming and iPod connectivity.
Tenn. official: UAW no deal breaker By Erik Schelzig Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee officials promoting a 6-square-mile “mega site” outside Memphis say it would be ideally suited for a new auto assembly plant — even if its workers are represented by the United Auto Workers union. Those comments by Bill Hagerty, the chief economic development official in Republican Gov. Bill Haslam’s Cabinet, come after attempts by the UAW to represent workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga that were heavily criticized by the governor and other GOP politicians in the state. The UAW ultimately lost the Volkswagen union in a 712-626 vote last week, and the state has since reengaged in incentives talks with the German car maker. Haslam and U.S. Sen. Bob Corker argued that a UAW win would have hurt the region’s ability to attract suppliers and other future business to the state, and fellow Republicans in the

state Legislature warned that a vote in favor of the UAW would have threatened the approval of incentives to expand the plant. Hagerty told reporters those concerns don’t enter into the thinking for the West Tennessee site. “No, we’re ready and willing to market the site to any major company that’s interested in Tennessee,” Hagerty said. “If you go through and look at the projects we’ve n av i ga te d a n d wo rke d through since we’ve been in, we’ve had a mix of union and non-union employers,” he said. Despite the vocal opposition to the UAW in Chattanooga, the governor said after a speech in Murfreesboro on Tuesday that the state doesn’t decide whether to pursue projects based on union membership. “It’s never been a litmus test,” Haslam said. “Obviously the state’s incentivized union (companies) in the past.” “In this case I was just making the point that one of the things VW kept say-
ing to us was we want to have a closer supplier network if we’re going to grow that plant,” he said. “And I know from fact from what suppliers have told us, is that that would be a lot harder to do if the UAW was there.” Volkswagen had declared its neutrality on the UAW vote, but has been a proponent of creating a German-style “works council” at the plant, which would represent both blue collar and salaried employees. The company has said U.S. law would require the establishment of an independent union in order to create a works council. Labor interests that make up half of Volkswagen’s supervisory board have questioned why Chattanooga is alone among the company’s major factories worldwide without formal worker representation. Bernd Osterloh, a board member and head of the company’s global works council, was quoted as telling the German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that he was concerned about what
he called the “massive antiunion atmosphere created from the outside by conservatives” surrounding the Chattanooga vote. He told the paper that the fate of the works council in Chattanooga could determine whether the company decides to make further investments in the state and region. “I can well imagine that a further VW location in the U.S., in the event one should one be built there, would not necessarily have to go in the South,” he said. “If the subject of co-determination isn’t cleared from the start, we as wage earners could hardly agree to that.” The German automaker’s CEO, Martin Winterkorn, announced at the Detroit auto show last month that a new seven-passenger SUV will go on sale in the U.S. in 2016. Production of the new model will either be in Chattanooga or at a plant in Mexico. Winterkorn said the new model will be part of a fiveyear, $7 billion investment in North America.
BERLIN — Germans, once a nation of ardent automobile enthusiasts, are not buying cars as much as they used to. Instead, they’re sharing them. The country has become the world’s biggest user of one-way car sharing plans, where people can find a vehicle using their smartphone, drive it across town and leave it there without having to return it to a central base. T h e t re n d h a s b e e n boosted by Germany’s powerful auto industry, which first ignored the car sharing phenomenon, but is now jumping on board. Some companies are betting big on the idea, not just for short trips within cities, but also for longer ones between them. It follows a culture shift in the country that invented the automobile, where cars were once commonly described as the Germans’ “favorite child.” Excellent public transport, high fuel prices and a strong environmental movement mean that for many Germans the car has become an expendable accessory, or at worst an expensive liability. New vehicle registrations fell below 3 million last year, continuing a two-decade decline. Meanwhile, the average age of buyers rose above 52 for the first time, compared with an average age of 46 in the mid-1990s. “The young buyers are dying off,” said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, who heads the University of DuisburgEssen’s Center for Automotive Research. As a result, the auto industry has embraced car sharing as a means of reaching a younger generation for whom the idea of owning a vehicle is as outdated as their parents’ record collection. “I want to pay for things when I use them,” said Martin Blankenstein, a 35-year-old management consultant who uses several different car sharing companies. For decades such services were station-based. Vehicles could only be picked up in certain places and had to be returned to the same location. But six years ago car sharing took a different turn, with the launch of the first one-way offers. These flexible services have spread to major cities across Europe and North America thanks to the adoption of smartphones, and have really taken off in Germany, where more than half of all the journeys were booked last year. Using a mobile app, customers can find a nearby car, book it at short notice, drive it across town and leave it there without having to return to the starting point. Billing is by the minute. Twenty minutes of use will typically cost 4-6 euros ($5.50-$8.20) with fuel, insurance and parking included. All-day rates range from 39-59 euros for most flexible car sharing services. What might seem like a costly extravagance for regular users can become attractive for people who rarely use a car. Advocates say the cost tends to be half of what a taxi would charge for the same journey. O n Tu e s d ay, Da i m ler launched a new option
for its Car2Go short-term rental service that allows customers to take one of its Mercedes-Benz Bclass vehicles from Berlin to Hamburg, or vice versa, and leave it there. The move marks a departure for Car2Go, which until now has only offered two-seater Smart cars for its 600,000 customers to zip around within 25 cities across Europe and North America. Daimler is following in the tire tracks of DriveNow, a joint venture between its rival BMW and car rental firm SIXT, which began offering a similar service between Cologne and Duesseldorf last year. “We’re responding to requests from our customers, who say they occasionally need a bigger car that they can take outside the city boundaries,” said Marcus Spickermann, the head of Daimler Mobility Services GmbH, which operates Car2Go. The success of car sharing in Berlin, with its trendsetting image, has attracted foreign manufacturers such as Citroen. The French automaker launched its Multicity electric car sharing service in the German capital. Worldwide, over 8.5 million one-way journeys were booked last year. More than 4.5 million of those were in Germany, and 2.2 million — more than a quarter of the global total — were in Berlin, according to Benno Bock of InnoZ, a transportation think tank. The number of bookings per month reached 250,000 last year, compared with about 40,000 in Washington, DC, the highest figure in the United States. Spickermann said Car2Go’s new intercity service may be rolled out to the rest of Europe and North America in the coming years. With the share of the world’s population living in cities predicted to rise from half to over two-thirds by 2050, Daimler needs to find a way to reach people to whom the traditional model of car ownership doesn’t appeal, he said. “Car sharing is a logical step for us, even though it may appear to be a contradiction for a manufacturer.” The move is a risky one. Some experts believe it could backfire on automakers by demonstrating how easy it is to live without a vehicle of one’s own — and the insurance costs, repairs and parking headaches that come with it. Blankenstein, who lives in Berlin, said recent fatherhood didn’t change his mind about getting a car: “I ask myself, what do we really need as a family?” Still, manufacturers may have no choice than to follow the trend, for now. “Many of them don’t know in which direction the market is heading, but they don’t want to be on the wrong track when change happens,” says Kurt Moeser, a historian who specializes in transport at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. “ M e rc e d e s i s d o i n g something completely counter-intuitive for its own business model by offering people cars they don’t need to own,” he said. “This could be quite dangerous. On the other hand, once a trend becomes clear it might be too late to jump aboard.”

Introduced during calendar 2012 to the United States, the FR-S is the only

rear-drive Scion.
Sen. Bob Corker argued that a UAW win would have hurt the region’s ability to attract suppliers and other future business to the state, and fellow Republicans in the
As German car sales drop, industry bets on sharing
state Legislature warned that a vote in favor of the UAW would have threatened the approval of incentives to expand the plant.
