2014 Lincoln MKZ: Just call it a luxury mid-size MyKey; two front and two rear roof-mounted assist handles; cabin air filtration system; rear window defroster; first- and secondrow dome lamps; autodimming rearview mirror; open/close windows; driver and front passenger illuminated visors with mirrors; remote decklid release; EasyFuel capless filler; variable-speed windshield wipers; dual-zone automatic temperature control; SiriusXM radio; eight cupholders and an overhead console with sunglasses holder.
Lincoln has been building luxury cars since 1917. Even after Henry Ford bought the company from Henry M. Leland in 1922, the Lincoln badge remained synonymous with luxury automobiles. So, when Lincoln bills its MKZ as an “entryluxury” vehicle, I don’t get it. Sure, automakers come up with special niches all the time. Sports-utility vehicles are “crossovers;” station wagons are “sportwagons;” sports cars can now be called “super cars” and luxury cars that might cost under $50,000 are now called “entry-luxury” cars. OK, I get it. These are mid-size sedans when traditional luxury vehicles were full-size; and I get it that marketing people constantly come up with gimmicks to sell to a wider audience and this niche is a gimmick. But in the case of a Lincoln, and the 2014 MKZ, it is an unnecessary gimmick. Since the MKZ began as the Lincoln Zephyr in 2005, it was a luxury vehicle without the high cost of an established nameplate, but with the understanding that Lincoln MEANT luxury. In 2007, Zephyr was refreshed and became the MKZ, and it was firmly entrenched with entry-luxury status. The 2014 MKZ is a new generation and it exudes luxury — entry or otherwise, from its sleek exterior to its feature-filled interior to its performance on the road.
Exterior augmented with upgrades The exterior is augmented by body-color door handles with chrome inserts, dual integrated bright exhaust tips, adaptive LED head lamps with auto on/off, exterior pedestal mirrors, high-gloss black roof ditch molding, LED tail lamps, acoustic-laminated glass windshield, solar tinted glass, power 4-wheel disc brake system and electronic brake force distribution. You also get 18-inch premium painted aluminum wheels and mini-spare tire and wheel. The 2014 MKZ also has included a remote start system SecuriCode keyless entry keypad, remote keyless entry system with trunk release and a universal garage door opener. MKZ’s look is one of sleekness, centered by a split-winged grille and accented by roundness from roof to shoulders to rear. The newly designed body is built in Hermosillo, Mexico, with a unitized welded steel body that is longer, wider and higher than the previous generation. MKZ now measures 194.1 inches long, 83.3 inches wide and 58.2 inches high on a 112.2-inch wheelbase, weighing in 404 pounds heavier at 4,002 pounds.

Performance delivered with power The mid-size gains its performance from one of two engine choices — a 2.0liter EcoBoost engine rated at 240 hp and 270 lbs-ft of torque and 22/33 in EPA estimates, or the 3.7 liter V-6 engine in my test ride that delivers 300 hp and 277 lbs-ft of torque. It is rated at 26/18 in 4WD and my mixed-use tests garnered an average of 22.2 mph. On the track, MKZ was quick and stable, sprinting from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds en route to a 14.9second quarter-mile. The cabin is quiet except for some engine noise at high speed, and its adaptive suspension was leveling and accommodating. In the most severe turns, this Lincoln held the road like no other Lincoln I have driven before, with good precision for the class. The cabin seats five and is slightly tighter in headroom than the previous generation, but with greater legroom. Interior accommodations are 37.9 inches of front headroom with 36.5 in row two, 44.3 inches of first row leg room and 37 for passengers, and shoulder room of 57.7 and 55.3. Safety systems include front seat side-impact air bags, driver and front passenger dual-stage air bags, front knee air bags, side curtain air bags, BeltMinder, child safety rear door locks, emergency trunk release, LATCH for children, SOS Post Alert System, an antitheft perimeter alarm, SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System and a battery saver.
