2012 Buick LaCrosse: Luxury mid-size adds power, economy and more tech Two engine options allow consumers to opt for better efficiency or increased power and capability. ■

Now in the third year of its second generation, Buick’s flagship luxury car, the LaCrosse, continues its attention to elegance, detail and high-tech, and has added an all-new 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine with eAssist™ “light electrification” technology to the equation. LaCrosse also upgrades its optional direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 engine with an additional 23 hp and E85 ethanol FlexFuel capability. The 2.4 provides full-size performance and the efficiency of a small car at an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway and the larger engine keeps its same fuel efficiency of last year at 17/27, but increases power and capability. For 2012, LaCrosse also adds the Buick IntelliLink system that uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver’s smart phone to a sevenor eight-inch high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio; enabling streaming stereo audio from the phone through such services as PANDORA® Internet Radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®. Also new for 2012 are standard dualzone climate control, highresolution color driver information center, available rear-vision camera available without a navigation system and new exterior colors: Crystal Red Tintcoat (premium charge) and Storm Gray Metallic.
Nostalgic Styling LaCrosse got its start in 2004 as a replacement for Century and Regal sedans, and its styling and architecture beckons nostalgic looks
at the lines of 1954 Skylark and 1956 Century. From its waterfall grille, wraparound headlamps, rounded demeanor and sweep-spear body-side, LaCrosse combines its flowing exterior with an uninterrupted interior design theme that envelopes the instrument and door panels. The cabin includes smoked chrome accents, warm wood, firstclass leather and materials combined with ice-blue ambient lighting to create a pampering environment. Manufactured at GM’s Fairfax Assembly facility in Kansas City, Kansas, La Crosse weighs in at a sturdy 4196 lbs., can carry five passengers, performs in either FWD or AWD configurations, and measures 197 inches long, 73.1 inches wide and 59.2 inches high on a 111.7-inch wheelbase. The 2012 La Crosse also includes dual through-fascia exhaust as standard on all V-6 models.
Two engine choices LaCrosse power comes from either the fuel-efficient, 182hp/172 lbs-ft of torque direct injected Ecotec 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with eAssist technology, or the 3.6-liter V-6 that propelled my test ride. Both engines are mated to efficient six-speed transmissions. The aluminum block, cast-aluminum head 3.6-liter V-6 VVT direct injection engine now produces 303hp and 264 lbs-ft of torque – up 5 lbs-ft. A DOHC set-up with four valves per cylinder; continuously variable valve timing and sequential fuel injection performed well an averaged 23.8mpg during a week of mixed-use driving. Right: Interior of the 2012 Buick LaCrosse. smooth, the LaCrosse responded with balanced acceleration at all speeds and managed a quick-for-theniche 6.9-second dash from zero-to-60mph, during a 15.4-second half-mile trip. LaCrosse’s intelligent allwheel-drive system automatically decides how to distribute torque based on vehicle speed, throttle position and individual wheel slip, and it is integrated with the electronic traction control system to provide outstanding capability in inclement weather. It worked well, and its variable-effort power steering made lowspeed turns effortless with only a bit of understeer. The HiPer Strut front suspension has improved the ride and reduced torque steer, while attending to vehicle sensitivity of tire irregularities and wheel balance. The system also exhibits more linear and communicative steering through improved camber control as well as improving impact isolation on bumps and rough surfaces.
Tops in safety The cabin comes in at a cozy 38 inches of front headroom and 37.3 in row two; a comfortable 41.7 inches of front legroom with 40.5 in the second seats and a roomy 57.4 inches of firstrow shoulder room and 56 inches for backseaters. The compartment includes power 8-way driver/ passenger seating and driver power lumbar, memory seats and mirrors, dual-zone auto climate control, air filtration system, AM/FM/XM/CD/ USB system and driver info center with compass and trip computer. A top safety performer in rollover and crash test results, LaCrosse includes driver and right-front passenger side-impact airbags, head-curtain airbags for front and rear outboard seating positions with Passenger Sensing System, stability control, traction control, ABS, brake assist, ultrasonic park assist, child security door locks, ON STAR Safe and Sound and tire pressure
monitoring system. The 2012 Buick LaCrosse starts at $32,535 for FWD outfitted with the 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine with eAssist and $36,910 for AWD. Different trim groups go all the way up to $49,115 for the Touring Group. My test drive in Leather Group trim started at $36,035. My test LaCrosse was covered in Atlantis Blue Metallic paint (last year they had Midnight Blue Metallic) matched with a Titanium (gray) perforated leather interior and 18-inch machinefaced alloy wheels. The Driver Confidence Package added $1440 for head up display, articulating Xenon HID headlamps and side blind zone protection. The Entertainment Package added $600 for a harman/ kardon 384-watt 11-speaker 5.1 Matrix surround system,
USB port and 120V power outlet. The power sunroof was $1195 and destination and freight charges added $875 for a final sticker-astested of $40,795. That’s about $3000 more than a similar test model cost last year, but dealer incentives are available that could lower the sticker considerably. This is our final 2012 model-year review. Subaru XV Crosstrek blends new look, utility
The XV Crosstrek has plenty in common with the Subaru Impreza, but its sporty exterior stands out in a crowd. ■

Fitted with a raised suspension, unique wheels and some bold paint colors, Subaru’s new XV Crosstrek five-door hatchback gets attention. But the verdict is out on whether potential buyers will see the Crosstrek as a smartly utilitarian tall wagon or what Subaru officials sought to design — a compact crossover sport utility vehicle. Basically, the new-for2013 Crosstrek is a Subaru Impreza that has been raised 3 inches, shod with larger tires on black-andgray two-toned wheels and mildly restyled. The Crosstrek uses the same platform as the Impreza, the same 148-horsepower, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder engine and Subaru’s all-wheel drive. Nearly all the interior is from the Impreza, too. But where the Impreza, which is Subaru’s entry-level car, blends in as a normal and pleasant-looking sedan and a slightly sporty-looking hatchback, the unusual — some might say oddlooking — Crosstrek tends to stand out in a crowd. Pricewise, the Crosstrek comes in at the higher range of the Impreza models and at the lower end of models of the Subaru Forester compact SUV. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, for a 2013 XV Crosstrek is $22,790 with five-speed manual transmission and $23,790 with continuously variable transmission that a driver operates like an automatic.
T h i s c o m p a re s w i t h $19,165 for a base, 2013 Impreza five-door hatchback with manual transmission and the $22,090 starting retail price for a base, 2013 Forester with manual. Note that the Forester is heavier, taller and longer in overall length than the Crosstrek, while the Crosstrek is heavier, taller and a tad longer in overall length than the Impreza hatchback. All Crosstreks come standard with all-wheel drive. While federal crash testing has not been reported, standard safety equipment on every Crosstrek includes seven air bags — one is for the driver’s right knee — along with stability control, traction control, frontseat anti-whiplash head restraints and antilock brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution. Subaru officials say competitors include compact crossover SUVs, which are vehicles built on car-like platforms that provide a more comfortable ride, rather than a brutish trucklike ride. Examples include the 2013 Nissan Juke, which has a starting MSRP plus destination charge of $22,440 with all-wheel drive, 188-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder and CVT. Note the Juke is available with frontwheel drive and CVT at a lower starting retail price of $20,780. Meantime, the 2013 Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV has a starting retail price of $21,790 with 155-horsepower, naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine, sixspeed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. wheel drive has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $24,440. While the Crosstrek’s foreign looks grab attention, it is the vehicle’s flexible interior for people and cargo that have enduring appeal. Cargo room behind the second-row seats measures 22.3 cubic feet, and there’s small-SUV-like space of 51.9 cubic feet with rear seats folded down. Best of all, the cargo floor is up some, so people don’t have to lean over to load and unload the back. Headroom is less, in front and back, than in the taller Forester and the CX-5, but the Crosstrek still has a commendable 39.8 inches and 37.7 inches of front and rear headroom, respectively, which is more than what a Juke has. There’s an impressive 43.5 inches of front-seat legroom in the Crosstrek, and while the back seat’s 35.4 inches is less than the Forester’s, both front- and rear-seat legroom are better than that in a Juke. The Crosstrek’s interior, at least in base Premium trim, appears a lot like an Impreza’s. There’s considerable plastic trim in there and acceptable cloth upholstery on the seats, with front seats heated as standard equipment. To get leather-trimmed seats, buyers must move up to the Limited model, which starts at $25,290. For both the Limited and base models, a moonroof and navigation system are

options, and a rear vision camera is available only on the pricey Limited. The 2-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder worked hard to keep up with other vehicles on uphill mountain highway sections and to accelerate. But mated to a fuel-saving CVT that droned incessantly, the engine’s power felt a bit tapped at times in the 3,175-pound tester, particularly when it carried four adults and suitcases. Peak torque is 145 footpounds at 4,200 rpm and compares with 177 footpounds starting at a low 2,000 rpm in the turbocharged Nissan Juke. But it’s close to the 150 foot-pounds of peak

torque delivered at 4,000 rpm in the Mazda CX-5. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel let Crosstrek drivers manually “shift” the CVT and reduce the droning as the tranny then goes from one to another of six preset gear ratios. Still, this artificial fix conflicts with the real reason to have a CVT, which is to maximize fuel economy by allowing the transmission to manage power delivery itself. For the record, the test Crosstrek with CVT averaged 27 miles per gallon in combined city/highway travel, which is less than the 28-mpg rating reported by the federal government. Riding on 17-inch tires,
the test Crosstrek surprised with its stable handling. Despite a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, the Crosstrek test vehicle maintained its composure in sudden emergency maneuvers and remained balanced and flat in corners. The high ride height provided good views out to the traffic ahead but didn’t make the Crosstrek feel tippy. Best of all, the Crosstrek’s seats were well-positioned, so most passengers could just set themselves onto the seats without climbing up or dropping down. Electric power-assist rack-and-pinion steering felt a bit numb but was acceptable.
