All About Cars

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT: A workhorse that pleases The Chevrolet Silverado, always comes up with compelling advertising to excite the truck-buying public, and this year, the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pick-up truck is billed as “A workhorse that’s also up for the getaway.” Its video image shows the truck pulling up a massive tree stump, while the driver makes off with the stump and the promise of a new end table made from the tree remnant. Not fully redesigned since 2007, but refreshened in 2011, the 2013 Silverado 1500 is built in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and sees only a few additions from last year. For 2013, powertrain grade braking is now included in all six-speed automatic transmissions. This feature reduces brake rotor temperatures 100 degrees Celsius on grade tests by downshifting transmission gears, thereby reducing brake applications on long downhill conditions. Additionally, the exterior color palette now includes Deep Ruby Metallic and Blue Topaz Metallic

A truckload of features On the workhorse end, Silverado 1500 offers a comprehensive array of features that make it an excellent choice for towing and hauling, including: StabiliTrak with trailer sway control and hill-start assist; tow-haul mode for automatic transmissions; available Integrated trailer brake controller; available max trailering package (10,700pound trailer weight rating) and available rear vision camera. For those who demand niceties out of their work truck. Silverado fills the need by outfitting its fullsize with a range of 17-inch, 18-inch and 20-inch wheels offered; chrome-styled steel wheels, chrome front bumper and chrome grille surround; EZ-Lift tailgate (spring-loaded) ; larger controls and door handles available on the upscale trim levels – these handles are easier to use with gloves; rear access doors that open 170 degrees for easy entry to the rear seat/storage area of extended cab models; power-operated rear side windows that lower completely into the access doors; and

a plethora of interior accouterments that include dual-zone automatic climate control; available navigation radio; Bose premium speaker system with subwoofer mounted in the center console; available rearseat entertainment system and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity; poweradjustable pedals; leathertrimmed front seat and remote vehicle starter system.

Confident exterior Silverado’s exterior is unchanged, with a confident, chiseled design and broadshouldered stance that have defined Chevy trucks for nearly 95 years, Design details include a power dome hood, flared rear fenders, vertically stacked reflector-optics head lamps and Chevrolet’s signature bow tie emblem in the grille. Heated, power-adjustable outside mirrors with autodimming and integrated signal indicators are available. The Silverado 1500 with an Extended Cab fits fullsize parameters, as with a short box it measures 230.2 inches long (the long box adds 19 inches), 79.9 inches wide and 73.7 inches high on a 142.5-inch wheelbase for the 4WD. Ground clearance is 9 inches and step-in height measures 22.6 inches, while the Silverado LT’s base curb weight comes in at 5092 lbs.

Four power choices Silverado provides four power choices: a 4.3-liter V-6 rated at 195 hp and 260 lbs-ft of torque and a 14/18 fuel economy rating; a 4.8-liter V-8 that is E85 capable and puts out 302 hp and 305 lbs-ft of torque and rated at 13/18 as was my test truck; two 5.3-liter FlexFuel V-8s rated at 15/21, with 315 hp and 335 lbs-ft of torque (one with an aluminum block and one with an iron block) and a muscular Vortec 6.2-liter that stam-

My 4WD LT test truck and its 4.8-liter engine was linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission, and averaged 14.6 mpg slugging its way through wind and snow during my tests. The Interior Plus package added $720 for EZ-Lift/locking tailgate, fog lamps, 6-way power seat adjuster, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback, and Bluetooth wireless technology. A power sliding rear win-

dow added $250 and a front 40/20/40 split bench seat added $1095. The sticker as tested came to $37,960, but local incentives could cut that much lower. Know the facts when it comes to oil changes

Save a bundle by bundling insurance

brandpoint

With more than 300 million vehicles on the road today, motor oil is the lifeblood of any engine and can help protect and prolong its life, whether you’re driving a compact car, pickup truck or SUV. However, not just any motor oil will ensure the healthy life of an engine and, unfortunately, discounted deals for an oil change may not be such a deal after all. With consumers looking to reduce their automotive maintenance costs, service locations can be quick to offer discounted services to capitalize on value seekers. How can a consumer be sure he or she is getting a quality motor oil and filter as part of the deal? A promise of “up to five quarts conventional oil” doesn’t really tell the consumer much about the quality of the oil being installed. “I can’t stress how important it is to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to motor oil changes and to understand that there is a big difference between a value and just a cheaper deal,” says automotive expert Lauren Fix, or the “Car Coach” as she’s known around the nation. “If drivers choose to have a professionally installed motor oil in their vehicle, it’s a must for them to confirm what that shop is actually pouring into their car.” Motor Oil Matters (MOM), a new consumer education and industry watchdog program by the American Petroleum Institute, has been established to stress the benefits of quality licensed

motor oils and call onto the carpet those who engage in deceptive practices. MOM and Fix recommend consumers arm themselves with a simple checklist of questions to help them make informed decisions about motor oil: Time for a change? The bottom line: Follow the oil change recommendations in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Pay close attention to the oil life monitor if a vehicle has it. When the monitor says it’s time for a change, it’s time. Drivers need to pay close attention to their vehicle usage because vehicle manufacturers sometimes recommend oil drain intervals based on driving habits. Do you know what you’re getting? Your service provider should be happy to supply you with the brand, viscosity grade and performance level of the oil they use before it is poured into your vehicle. It’s also important to ask for that information in writing or on the receipt. Drive away from locations that don’t know or won’t confirm in writing what they’re pouring into your vehicle. Who can you trust? The American Petroleum Institute certifies oil change locations under the MOM program. Service providers that are MOM-certified have had their quality control procedures independently audited and have made the commitment to always tell their customers exactly what oil is going into their cars. Does the oil meet the per-

Be sure the type of oil meets recommendations for your vehicle. formance level recommended for my car? Motor oil matters. Any motor oil poured into a vehicle should meet the level of performance recommended by the vehicle manufacturer in the owner’s manual. For many vehicles, manufacturers recommend oils that comply with the latest ILSAC (International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee) or American Petroleum Institute standards. The American Petroleum Institute independently audits and licenses motor oils that meet its standards. Licensed oils carry the American Petroleum Institute’s Starburst or Donut certification marks as a representation and warranty that these oils meet the institute’s standards. Getting a full change? Make sure the oil change includes a fresh filter. Your owner’s manual likely recommends a particular type

of oil filter, so make sure the right one is included with your oil change. Not sure how to find an MOM-certified oil change location in your area? Consumers can find a MOM-licensed location near them by visiting www.MotorOilMatters.org or looking for the MOM mark. This website is a great resource to find more information about quality motor oil and how it helps protect your vehicle. MOM is also watching out for the “bad guys” and consumers are encouraged to confidentially report any oil marketer, distributor or service location that they suspect is misrepresenting the quality of the oil being marketed, supplied or installed. Just go to the MOM website and click on the Report Abuse button. Be sure to also check them out on Facebook and Twitter (@motoroilmatters) for the most recent updates and news.

B u n d l i n g i n s u ra n c e products with one company — and scoring cheaper premiums as a reward — isn’t a new concept. But, according to a recent study by J.D. Power and Associates, not only is bundling still popular among consumers, it also results in higher customer satisfaction. The study found that nearly 60 percent of customers bundle auto and homeowners policies with the same insurer. When customers need additional products — such as motorcycle, boat and life insurance — 77 percent of them choose to bundle. The study notes that insurance bundlers also tend to be more satisfied with their insurers overall, not just with the premium discounts they’re getting. Charles Valinotti, head of underwriting and product with insurer QBE, says bundling insurance policies offers other benefits besides lower premiums. “ C u s to m e r co nve nience is one advantage,” says Valinotti. “It’s easier to manage insurance policies when you don’t have to work with multiple insurers. And if you have a claim, you just need to call one company.” Bundling might also give you an edge when you file a claim. Valinotti says insurance companies are interested in keeping your

business and will be open to renewing policies when there’s a loss — unless it’s something extreme. How can you get the biggest bang out of your insurance bundle? Valinotti suggests: • Take a look at all your insurance policies. If they’re not with the same insurance company, you could be losing as much as 25 percent in bundling discounts on each car, as well as on your homeowners policy. Think about including your life insurance, as well, which could result in another 2 to 5 percent in savings. • Consider adding an umbrella policy. If you own your home, an umbrella policy gives you extra liability protection on your home and car, and might earn you even more discounts to your homeowners and auto insurance. • Research options for renters. If you don’t own your home, bundling may still be an option. Look into bundling a renters policy with your car insurance, which might result in as much as a 20 percent discount on your auto coverage. Because renters insurance is inexpensive, it may almost pay for itself by savings through bundling. • Investigate bundling with business policies. If you have a business, find out whether bundling your business policies will qualify you for discounts on your personal insurance.

Behind the Wheel

Acura RLX replaces RL flagship sedan by ANN M. JOB Associated Press

The 2014 RLX luxury sedan is the most sophisticated Acura production car in history, topping even the Acura NSX sports car that’s still revered by auto enthusiasts. Replacing the flagship Acura RL sedan this year, the RLX even has its own driving experience that comes from a new suspension and new all-wheel steering system that electronically adjusts toe-in and toe-out at the rear tires for improved tracking in curves and corners. Designed by the man who helped craft the NSX suspension and who formerly worked on Honda’s Formula 1 race team, the new, standard Precision All-Wheel S te e r ( P-AWS) sys te m makes the RLX feel as if it’s directly dialed in with the driver. Also notable: Combined city/highway fuel economy for the RLX is more than 24 miles per gallon and bests Infiniti, Lexus, MercedesBenz and BMW competitors. The RLX’s direct injection V-6 comes standard with Variable Cylinder Management that automatically deactivates some engine cylinders when they’re not needed, thus saving gasoline. Though it has the same overall length as the midsize RL, the RLX has surprisingly generous rearseat legroom — 38.8 inches — which surpasses that in the Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class sedans. In addition, the RLX offers new safety features, including a system that gently steers the car back into its lane if it detects wandering over the center line. This works only if there is lane marking that is detectable by the system. M e a n t i m e , a d a p t i ve cruise control with Slow Speed Follow can bring the car to a full stop in certain circumstances if the RLX is headed for the rear-end of

a stopped vehicle in front of it. But the RLX, like its RL predecessor, is front-wheel drive, rather than the rearwheel drive that some sporty luxury sedan purists prefer. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price is up only $250 from its predecessor Acura RL. A base RLX has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $49,345. All RLX models come with a 310-horsepower V-6 and a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The RLX also is the first top Acura sedan to include jeweled-look, light-emitting diode headlights. Other standard equipment includes leathertrimmed seats and stitched leather instrument panel cover, moonroof, pushbutton start, keyless entry, three-zone climate control, Acura/ELS premium audio system with 10 speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, two sizable display screens in the dashboard and a rearview camera. B u ye rs c a n m ove u p through four trim levels to add navigation, lane keeping, a new Krell audio system with 14 speakers, sunshades and ventilated seats. In comparison, the starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a rearwheel drive 2013 Infiniti M37 is $49,605. The M37 has a 330-horsepower V-6 and seven-speed automatic, but the base audio system has six speakers and dual, not three-zone, climate control is standard. The M37 also comes with high-intensity discharge headlights, rather than LED lights. While the federal government fuel economy ratings for the RLX are 20/31 mpg for city/highway travel, the mid-size M37 is rated at 18/26 mpg. Another competitor, the Lexus LS 460, has a starting retail price of $72,885 and comes with a 386-horsepower V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission.

The RLX still has some of the heavy Acura “helmet shield” design on its nose. But it’s mild, and the flowing lines on the sides and strong rear end give the car a luxury appearance. The interior of the topof-the-line RLX with Advance package was topnotch in fit and finish, with small gaps between trim pieces and everything lined up perfectly. This RLX included additional acoustic glass that helped keep the interior so quiet, front-seat passengers conversed in light tones. 1910 Model F, hardware store are Michigan family’s legacy “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun. Usually people buy a car from somebody else and work on it. For it to be in the family that long is really pretty special.”

DETROIT — A lot of the old-timers know it’s still back there somewhere, hidden in darkness. Now and then, some of them work up the nerve to ask for a peek at it. And if the owner is around, they just might get the chance to see a piece of history in more ways than one. They’re the longtime customers of Reindel’s True Value Hardware in Fraser, a 115-year-old store owned by a single family since it was founded. If the regulars aren’t here for the nostalgia behind that longevity, or for something as practical as a specific tool, they come to see the old car that they hear so much about. It’s a 1910 Model F Roadster — an antique vehicle briefly produced by International Harvester, which was known back then mostly for the farm equipment it manufactured. The company decided to dabble in the burgeoning car industry, when auto companies were springing up like weeds after a rain and dozens of them competed for money and attention. The Model F Roadster was International Harvester’s foray into the car market.

charlie reindel owner

“Everybody had their own ideas how to make cars back then,” said Charlie Reindel, the 61-year-old owner of the hardware store and the vintage vehicle kept inside it. He has been told his is one of a handful of these models left in the world, and after years of babying, it’s not much different from when it rolled off the assembly line. Every square inch of it features some peculiarity. The frame is wood. The fittings are solid brass. Kerosene lamps flank the windshield and fuel the taillights, which are sheathed in thick red glass. The license plate, its original from 1910, is made of porcelain. The thick tread on the tires spells out the words “non-skid” over and over. The carbide headlights are powered by carbon pellets and water, like a miner’s helmet, and they mix to form acetylene gas, which creates a bright light, making the housing dangerously hot to touch. “When they heat up, you don’t want to put your hand on them,” he said with a laugh. Reindel isn’t a car collector who saved for years to buy this model and show it off in car cruises. This was his grandfather’s car,

one the old man bought brand new a century ago for $1,200 so he could deliver tools around town from his little hardware store. It’s a family car in the truest sense of the word. The hardware store was passed down to him the same way. His grandfather started the business in 1898, in a little shack across the street, before building his own place in 1925 on the corner where it still sits. Business isn’t bad nowadays, Reindel said, but it was better when nearby Groesbeck was lined with hundreds of machine shops that were longtime customers. Many of them were wiped out by the recession. The growth of big-box hardware stores has taken its toll, too. But Reindel’s still gets enough customers who like going to an oldfashioned corner hardware store. “A lot of people like the personalized service we have, and somebody who can talk to you who actually knows what they’re talking about,” Reindel said. And enough people are eager to see if that car is still around, too. “A lot of the older guys, they still ask, ‘Is it still there? Do you still have it?’ “ said Karen Johnson, herself almost family

Though it’s usually in its protective cocoon at the store, Reindel sometimes takes it out to car shows at Greenfield Village or at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, or to show the excited guys in the beer tent at the Lions Club Festival every summer. Sometimes, just for fun, he’ll take it on a run to the gas station for cigarettes, drawing stunned looks from everyone pumping gas into their comparatively uninteresting vehicles. And when Reindel turns the key and people hear the unusual sounds the engine makes, they swarm. “They’ve never seen anything like it,” said Al Roy, 54, a longtime employee. He often tags along with Rein-

del when he takes the car out. “Then when they hear it run, they’re like, ‘Whoa!’ “ If someone asks to see it, in those quiet moments when the walk-in traffic ebbs, Reindel proudly shows it off. It’s not just history, he said. It also represents his personal history, something

from the past that, like the store where it’s kept, he’s been entrusted to take care of. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said. “Usually people buy a car from somebody else and work on it. For it to be in the family that long is really pretty special.”
