It just used the electricity supplied by the city downtown. The Volt also endeared itself by clearly showing on the dashboard each time car was connected to the charger exactly when it would be fully charged. The Volt tester rode on 17-inch, low-rolling-resistance tires and had a firm, not plush, ride. Riders felt road bumps, but most were not harsh. They heard some road noise from the tires, but it was obtrusive only on particularly rough concrete. The engine became buzzy, the way many four cylinders do, only when it was pushed hard to accelerate. At more than 3,700 pounds, the Volt felt substantial, not lightweight. In fact, this weight is akin to that of some regular, full-size sedans. The Volt, however, is less than 15 feet long from bumper to bumper, or about 1.5 inches

longer than a Toyota Prius mid-size car. Passengers inside the car, especially those in the front seat, sit behind a high-tech array of touch controls on the dashboard and plentiful displays and information in the instrument cluster. Much is unchanged. The front seats still come only with manual adjustment. The back rear window pillars also remain quite thick, so driver views can be poor while backing up the car. Unfortunately, a rearview camera or rear park assist is not standard. The Volt’s back seat — for four — can feel cramped for taller passengers. While front-seat riders get 42 inches of legroom, there’s just 34.1 inches in the back seat. Trunk space, though, is a commendable 10.6 cubic feet. 2013 Volvo S60: Innovative safety, sportiness, luxury The Volvo S60 was introduced for the 2001 model year as the Swedish manufacturer’s new-generation luxury sports sedan. Build in Ghent, Belgium, the second generation S60 was launched for 2011 and its sculpting has moved past Volvo’s perceived boxiness to present rounded Eurostyling, a forward-leaning demeanor and a sportiness that encompasses luxury and the promise of performance. New for 2013 are Volvo’s innovative Pedestrian Detection System, Road Sign Information, Active High Beam and Tunnel Detection, several engine choices and AWD options in mid-level trims.

Scandinavian design cues The Volvo S60 captures Scandinavian design cues, but its sculpture was engineered to produce a “Coupe with four doors” profile. The C-pillar stretches sensually all the way to the tail lamps and the slim coupelike roof line is accompanied by a contour on the shoulders on either side of the lower body, creating a gentle yet powerful double wave from the headlamps at the front to the tail lamps at the rear. Measuring 182.2 inches long, 74.76 inches wide with the mirrors folded and 58.4 inches high with 5.4 inches of ground clearance on a 109.3 inch wheelbase, the 3560-lb. S60 looks confident, stable, sporty and upscale. The S60 can be specified with a choice of either of two chassis. According to Volvo, during the development process, the chassis team carved out a holistic solution featuring changes and refinements for virtually every single detail that influences a car’s driving properties. This includes steering, stiffer springs and bushes as well as more damping. All variants of the S60 can be specified with the advanced, self-adjusting FOUR-C active chassis. The FOUR-C active chassis has been modified and refined to suit the dynamic character of the sports sedan.

An assortment of engines The 2013 Volvo S60 is available with a powerful 304hp 3.0-liter T6 version, two direct-injected engines a turbodiesel and two regular diesel engines, and each choice has its own power dynamics, performance and economy attributes. Each can be mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission. My test S60 was powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine that produces 250hp and 266 lbs.-ft of torque. EPA rated at 20mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway, my tests yielded an average of 21.3mpg. On the track, S60 was slow, but steady, managing a

6.8-second sprint from zero to 60mph and a quartermile run of 15.3 seconds. I experienced only minor turbo-lag and both passing power and uphill strength are excellent. While steering is a bit heavy, S60 handles quick turns with little yaw and only slight front lean, and the quiet cabin is smooth over most road ruts thanks to Volvo’s MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and stabilizer bar working with an independent rear suspension with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and stabilizer bar. Stopping power is assertive with the vehicle’s Antilock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution and Electronic Brake Assistance.

Spacious interior packed with refinement The S60 cabin is pampering and roomy. Headroom with the sunroof offers 37.6 inches up front and 37.4 inches in row two; 41.9 inches of front legroom is provided with 33.5 inches for second-row passengers and there is 56.9 inches of front shoulder room 55.2 inches for the back row.
