All About Cars
2013 Toyota Camry: First launched in 1983, the Toyota Camry has been a winner from its beginning. The modern mid-size offers style, performance and comfort. To date, more than 15 million Camry models have been sold worldwide, and it has been America’s top-selling sedan for 14 of the past 15 years. Redesigned last year, the seventh-generation Camry has improved on its cabin, materials, safety features, tech and infotainment. Gaining exterior styling points last year, the 2013 model has added interior design upgrades, a Blind Spot Monitor system, rear cross traffic alert function, quieter rode characteristics and improved driving dynamics. For 2013, Camry is offered in entry-level L trim, value-driven LE, premium XLE and sporty SE grades. A Hybrid class is also offered.

Three engine choices The 2013 Camry offers three drivetrain choices: the economical 2.5-liter fourcylinder gasoline engine; a 3.5-liter V-6 and the Hybrid Synergy Drive. The 2.5-liter four that propelled my test XLE puts out 178 horsepower and 170 lbs.-ft. of torque, matched with the standard six-speed automatic transmission. The system is EPA rated at 25 mpg city/35 mpg highway and 28 mpg overall. A week on the road yielded an average of 27.1 mpg in mixed use driving. The DOHC 3.5-liter V-6 is an engine option that delivers 268 horsepower and 248 lbs.-ft. of torque. With chain-driven camshafts and
Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence, the system is estimated at 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway. The Hybrid is EPA-estimated at 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway/41 mpg combined. My test ride with the 2.5liter engine was slow, but steady on the highway; was a capable passer and quiet in the cabin. Track runs showed an 8.2-second 0-to-60 mph dash and a 16.3-second quarter-mile. Electric power rack-and-pinion steering with electric power-assist was responsive, with some understeer apparent in autocross tests, and Camry’s independent MacPherson strut front suspension with stabilizer bar and an independent dual link rear with stabilizer bar were more than capable of taking sway and most roads inadequacies out of the equation.

Behind The Wheel
New Chevrolet Sonic is RS hatchback by ANN M. JOB Associated Press
The newest Chevrolet Sonic is a peppy, stylish, versatile and good handling RS hatchback with standard turbo engine, leathertrimmed seats and smartphone infotainment link — all for a starting price tag of less $21,000. Better yet, the 2013 Sonic 5-Door RS has the top, overall, five-out-of-five-stars rating for passenger protection in frontal and side crash testing, according to the federal government. And the Sonic is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, where first-year owner reports put predicted reliability of Sonic models at average. Don’t confuse the 138horsepower Sonic RS, which comes with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and peak torque of 148 foot-pounds, with the more fuel-sipping versions of Sonic sedan and hatchback. Transmission gearing is different in the RS to get power to the front wheels quicker. With bigger wheels and more standard equipment, the RS also weighs more. So the best RS fuel economy rating from the U.S. government of 27 miles per gallon in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway with manual transmission is a tad lower than that of other Sonics. The test Sonic RS hatchback averaged 28 mpg in combined city/highway travel. But the get-up-and-go of the sporty-looking, fourcylinder turbocharged RS hatchback quickly becomes appealing. Retail price certainly can be appealing, too, when standard features are factored in. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $20,995 for the 2013 RS five-door hatchback with 1.4-liter, double overhead cam, turbo four cylinder and six-speed manual transmission is $5,400 more than
that for a base, 2013 Sonic LS hatchback with nonturbo four cylinder with 125 foot-pounds of torque and five-speed manual. B u t t h e R S s ta n d a rd equipment includes 17inch, five-spoke, aluminum wheels, rear brake discs and the leather-trimmed, front bucket seats that have suede-like microfiber inserts and stitched “RS” on them and look like those in a sports car. There’s a leather-wrapped, sport steering wheel, premium floor mats with RS emblems on them and premium audio with six speakers. And the RS comes stand a rd w i t h C h ev ro l e t’s MyLink infotainment system that is compatible with smartphones for use of Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio as well as the low-cost BringGo smartphone navigation system. Competitors in the small hatchback category include the 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT which has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $19,340. The Elantra GT has a 148-horsepower, naturally aspirated four cylinder with peak torque of 131 foot-pounds at 4,700 rpm and leathertrimmed seats come with a $2,750 option package. Meantime, the 2013 Ford Fiesta five-door hatchback with 120-horsepower, naturally aspirated four cylinder has a starting retail price of $19,995 with cloth seats. The Sonic is the “middle child” of Chevrolet’s three smallest cars — Spark, Sonic and Cruze. The Spark, however, is not a recommended buy of Consumer Reports, and the Cruze is offered only as a sedan with 15 cubic feet of trunk space. This compares with 19 cubic feet behind the Sonic RS rear seats and the 47.7 cubic feet of cargo room when the Sonic hatchback’s rear seats are folded down. These seats split 60/40 for different types of people- and cargohauling tasks. The five-passenger Sonic five-door RS uses the same turbocharged four-cylinder

DUI rule recommendation raises questions Delaware County Daily Times
jwolfe@delcotimes.com
A recommendation by the National Transportation Safety Board was met with what appears to be a good amount of resistance by the public this week. The NTSB has recommended that the blood alcohol level content for a DUI be lowered from 0.08 to 0.05. The recommendation was made in the name of safety, but many are wondering if that’s really the case. “Its no longer about safety...its all about money!,”
wrote Linda Parenti McDevitt on the Daily Times’ Facebook page about the story. “The more ardnorograms and court costs the better....05 is crazy! I wouldnt be able to go out and have one glass of wine without risking a dui and that is not justice its a scam!!!” That comment was the sentiment of many about the story. The NTSB says it is considering the move because it has worked in other countries and because the amount of deaths in the U.S. caused by drunk drivers each year has remained at about
10,000 since the mid-1990s. That is down from the 18,000 in 1982, before the legal limit was put at 0.08. The motivations and the future effectiveness of lowering the limit can certainly be debated. But there was one comment on the Daily Times’ Facebook page, that left no room for debate. It was reacting to a comment that said a lower limit would be “stupid.” “Stupid?? Say that to someone who lost a loved one to a driver under the influence!” wrote Regina Elizabeth on the comments. “One drink can impair a
driver even though they think they are “sober”! I say lower it and have the discipline to take a cab or have a designated driver if you are out and drinking.” So, is there a certain percentage, maybe even a large percentage, of this proposal that is money motivated? I don’t doubt it. But I don’t doubt there’s also a certain percentage that is safety motivated, too. And don’t ever forget to check your motivation to be safe before you get behind the wheel. As I’ve said before, others matter, and you do too.

GM aims new Chevy Cruze diesel at VW Jetta
by TOM KRISHER associated press
DETROIT — The marketing people at Chevrolet make no secret of the goal for the new diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze: Take sales from Volkswagen. In fact, they’re rolling out the car in 13 markets where VW sells the most diesel versions of its Jetta, another compact. “Jetta owns the segment,” concedes Phil Caruso, small-car marketing manager for the General Motors’ Chevy brand. “We’re looking to be a key competitor and take over some of that business.” Diesel cars attract buyers with high gas mileage, quick acceleration at any speed, and a long range between fill-ups. Last year, about 70 percent of the diesel cars sold nationwide were Volk-
swagens. VW sold 90,295 diesel cars in the U.S., and nearly 50,000 of those were Jettas. Overall, diesel sales are growing. U.S. sales totaled almost 409,000 last year, up 41 percent from 2008, according to Wards AutoInfoBank. That includes trucks, which account for the bulk of diesel vehicles. The Cruze is the only diesel car currently sold by any of the Detroit Three automakers. GM hasn’t offered a diesel car for years. Its diesel engines of the past were noisy, smoky and had a reputation for lacking reliability. Technology has made diesel-powered engines far quieter and cleaner. The Cruze, for instance, clatters a little at idle, but engine noise is barely noticeable at highway speeds due to a quiet motor and insulation.
Exhaust smoke can hardly be seen. Diesels usually are 20- to 30-percent more efficient than comparable gas-powered cars, which should offset the higher price of diesel fuel. Currently, diesel costs $3.89 per gallon, 23 cents more than gasoline, according to AAA. The diesel Cruze, with its 2-liter, 151 horsepower motor, gets an estimated 46 miles per gallon on the highway, eight more than the gasoline version that most people buy. The diesel Cruze, with its six-speed automatic transmission, beats an automatic Jetta diesel on the highway by four mpg. But the Sonic’s small size meant many motions at the back could be detected by an alert driver. Front-seat passengers get a bit less headroom — 37.6 inches to 38.7 inches, depending on whether there’s a sunroof — than the Fiesta and Elantra GT buyers have. Interestingly, back-seat riders in the Sonic RS get a full 38.1 inches as the Sonic roofline doesn’t slope down until aft of the back-seat passengers’ heads. This is more than the 37.2 inches in the Fiesta back seat and the 37.9 inches in the back
of the Elantra GT. Legroom of 41.8 inches in the Sonic hatchback front seats is generous but still a tad less than the 42.2 inches in the front seats of the Fiesta and 42 inches in the Elantra GT. Rear-seat legroom of 34.6 inches is equal to that of the Elantra GT and better than the 31.2 inches in the back of the Fiesta. Stoned-driving bill attracts lawsuit in Colo. DENVER — A stoneddriving bill awaiting the governor’s signature has attracted a lawsuit from a northern Colorado man who wants to block the measure. Brandon Baker of Nunn says he uses marijuana for religious reasons and that the blood limit at which drivers would be considered impaired is too low for frequent users. Baker says the limit will help convict pot users who aren’t stoned behind the wheel. Some users always have elevated blood levels of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in pot. The bill does allow people to argue they were sober at the stated limit. Baker filed his lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Denver. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper has long advocated for a marijuana driving standard and is expected to sign it into law next week.
Tighter Ind. drunken driving law seems unlikely INDIANAPOLIS — Some key Indiana legislators don’t expect the state to adopt a federal safety board’s recommendation that the threshold for drunken driving be cut nearly in half. The National Transportation Safety Board said in its proposal last week that drunken-driving deaths could be reduced if states lowered the current 0.08 blood-alcohol level for
driving to 0.05 percent. State Sen. Tom Wyss, R-Fort Wayne, pushed for more than a decade for the law that lowered Indiana’s drunken-driving level from 0.10 percent to 0.08 percent in 2001. Wyss said it would be “nearly impossible” to bring the level to 0.05 percent. House transportation committee Chairman Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, said he didn’t believe lawmakers would react favorably to an appointed federal board trying to press for changes in state laws. The NTSB recommended federal officials established “incentive grants” designed to encourage states to adopt the lower threshold.
Tougher safety belt enforcement pending in Wis.
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin drivers and passengers should buckle up or they will have a better chance to get a ticket under a new statewide crackdown. Starting Monday through June 2, more Wisconsin law enforcement officers will be on patrol for longer hours to enforce safety belt use. State Patrol Maj. Sandra Huxtable says more than 100,000 safety belt convictions occurred last year, second most among all Wisconsin traffic violations. Huxtable says using safety belt is the most effective way to prevent traffic deaths. About one out of five drivers in Wisconsin is unbuckled behind the wheels. The state is also falling behind neighboring states and the national average in safety belt use rate. Associated Press
