New RAV4 generation stays true to its roots Toyota’s RAV 4 has been a cool ride since it became the world’s first compact sports utility vehicle in 1994 — coming to America two years later. Named for its ability as a Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive, RAV 4 has remained true to its roots during its first three generations. Now, all-new as a fourthgen 2013 model, RAV4 has eliminated a larger engine option and third-row seating choice, and lost about 200 pounds in curbweight, but has gained in performance, fuel economy, standard electronics (including a back-up camera) and a dynamic fun-appeal to its exterior architecture. Still based on a 104.7-inch wheelbase, RAV4 now measures two inches shorter in length at 179.9 inches, one inch wider at 72.6 inches, and an inch lower at 65.4 inches.
Modern look and aggressive character Architecturally, RAV4 has relocated the spare from the rear door to a well under the cargo compartment, and the new design incorporates a sleek-sloping roofline and an aggressive character line. Also new is a roof-hinged liftgate, replacing the old side-hinged rear door. Halogen headlights with projector low beams give RAV4 a modern look, and provide outstanding illumination in an energy-efficient package and RAV4’s rear roof spoiler not only visually extends the arc of the roofline, enhancing RAV4’s aerodynamics, but incorporates a brilliant LED center brake light. The exterior also utilizes projector-beam headlights with auto-off feature, daytime running lights, a colorkeyed rear spoiler with LED center high-mount stop light, 17-inch wide vent steel wheels with wheel covers and P225/65R17 tires, colorkeyed outside door handles,

scale and lesser materials, but it is user-friendly and high-tech. The cabin is only slightly less roomy than before with accommodations of 39.8 inches of front headroom and 38.9 inches in row two; 42.6 inches of front legroom with 37.2 inches for second-seat passengers and 57.3 inches of shoulder room in row one with 55.4 inches for the back row. The RAV4 XLE cabin includes dual zone automatic climate control with micro dust and pollen filter and information display, 6.1inch backup camera and display with guidelines, shift lever with silver accents, fabric-trimmed sixway adjustable driver’s seat with sport bolsters and seat back pocket, four-way adjustable front passenger seat with sport bolsters and seat back pocket, power windows with driver auto, Eco/ Sport modes, day/night rearview mirror, soft-touch interior accents, power windows with driver auto down, power door locks with shiftlinked automatic lock/unlock feature, cruise control, one-touch three-blink turn signal indicator, tilt/telescopic urethane steering wheel with audio, multi-information display and Bluetooth hands-free telephone controls, remote keyless entry system, illuminated entry system (key illumination, interior light, and front personal light), digital clock, center armrest with console storage box, eight cup/bottle holders, door panel storage pockets, two front 12volt auxiliary power outlets, dual sun visors with vanity mirrors and extenders and remote fuel filler door release lever.
Under the hood, the 3.5liter V-8 is no longer an option, but the standard 2.5liter 4-cylinder engine with a 4-speed automatic capably delivers 176 hp and 172 lbs-ft of torque for a 21/29 EPS rating. My tests yielded a mixed-use average of 25.5mpg. RAV4 is a fun ride and will campaign well for you. The improved 2.5-liter is faster than in the previous incarnation and broke 9 seconds on a zero-to-60 mph dash, on its way to a very steady 17-second quarter-mile. I last tested a RAV4 in 2011 and I found the new version has improved is passing ability with less engine hesitation. Car prices hit record as buyers load up on options By Tom Krishner Associated Press DETROIT — Americans are paying record prices for new cars and trucks, and they have only themselves to blame. The average sale price of a vehicle in the U.S. hit $31,252 last month, up almost $1,000 over the same time last year. The sharp increase has been driven by consumers loading cars up with high-end stereos, navigation systems, leather seats and safety gadgets. It’s a buying pattern that began around two years ago with low interest rates that let buyers choose pricier cars while keeping monthly payments in check. And automakers have also offered cheap lease deals that include fancy options. Add in booming sales of expensive pickup trucks, and you get record high prices. But those conditions could soon change. Although sales are expected to keep rising, automakers say the next wave of buyers who replace older cars will be more costconscious, shunning expensive radios and cushy seats to reduce payments. Ford is starting to see that trend in pickup trucks, and is adding a lower-priced model to its top-selling F-Series line. Most car buyers shop based on expectations for a monthly payment, with the average running around $450, said Jesse Toprak, senior analyst with the TrueCar.com auto pricing website. Since bank interest rates run as low as 2 percent and automakers offer nointerest financing, buyers now have a choice between a lower payment or a nicer car. Unlike rising mortgage rates, shorter-term auto interest rates have remained fairly stable. “If you can keep your payment the same and get more
car, most consumers in the U.S. just get more car,” said Toprak, who calculated the record average price. The average price, he said, went up about $1,400, or 4.5 percent, in the past two years, far faster than normal. The result is a dream scenario for automakers and car dealers: People are paying record high prices just as demand returns to levels not seen since the Great Recession. It’s also a dream for people like Zachary Bier, a 26-yearold engineer and sales representative in New York City who just leased a $52,000 BMW 335i to replace a 3-Series with an expiring lease. He set out to match his old $650-per-month payment with hopes of getting more features. For the same payment, he got metallic black paint, upgraded leather seats with red trim and stitching, Bluetooth technology to link his phone to the car, a headsup display that projects his navigation system and other data onto the windshield, and electronic blind-spot detectors, he said. “I guess I was surprised based on the sticker price that this car has so much more,” he said. “For everything that comes on this, I feel like it’s a better car.” The reason car companies can offer cheap leases is because used car values are expected to remain high for the next several years. A company will offer an attractive lease rate now if it feels confident that when the lease is over, it can then sell the returned vehicle for a healthy price on the usedcar market. Those who buy instead of lease also get more for their money because low interest rates can bring lower payments. On average, fouryear new-car loan rates are just over 4 percent this year, according to Bankrate.com.
Back in 2007, before the Great Recession, that figure was 7.68 percent. That’s a big difference for someone buying a loaded-out $31,000 Ford Fusion with a package that includes heated leather seats, premium audio system and 18-inch polished aluminum wheels. Say the buyer trades in a car worth $10,000 and borrows $21,000. At 4 percent interest for four years, the monthly payment would be $474. But if interest rates return to pre-recession levels, the payment jumps to $510, raising total costs by $1,728. That could cause a buyer to cut features to keep the price down. Rising demand for cars also is helping to drive up prices. Last month, new car sales jumped 17 percent to 1.5 million, their highest level in more than six years. Business is good for Scott Fink, CEO of a small chain of Hyundai, Mazda and Chevrolet dealers in Florida’s Tampa Bay area. His Hyundai dealership in New Port Richey, Fla., sold a record 700 new cars in August. But Fink worries that incomes aren’t rising fast enough to keep pace with price growth. Government statistics show personal income rose only 1 percent in the past two years, less than a quarter of the auto price increase. And Fink fears that eventually the Federal Reserve will ease out of buying bonds, allowing interest rates to rise. Long-term mortgage rates already are up more than a full percentage point since May. So far, though, auto loan rates haven’t been affected much, but Fink worries they will go up. “We know we’re a half a point or a point away from seeing a drop in sales,” he said. “Every time they raise rates, it takes people out of the market.”
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) includes lower anchors and tether anchors on outboard second-row seats and childprotector rear door locks Additionally, RAV4 is constructed with side impact door beams, a front energyabsorbing crumple zone, soft energy-dissipating interior trim and a collapsible steering column. The base RAV4 starts $23,290 for the LE trim. The XLE starts at $24,290 and the Limited trim begins at
$28,805. My test XLE added bodyside moldings for $209 and running boards for $549. Destination charges added $860 for a stickeras-tested of $25,908.

In quick turns, there is still a noticeable amount of body roll, but in normal driving RAV4 is confident, stable and a fun drive, though summertime potholes and road irregularities are transmitted to the driver and Small SUV big on safety passengers without a lot of The RAV4 Star Safety syspampering. tem includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control with High-tech and Traction Control, Anti-lock accommodating Brake System with ElecThe interior is a mix of up- tronic Brake-force Distribu-

Toyota Avalon adds fuel-thrifty hybrid By Ann M. Job Associated Press Move over, Toyota Camry. It’s time for Toyota’s other sizable sedan, the Avalon, to get some well-deserved attention. Recently revamped with a stylish body and new features, the five-door Avalon now also has an impressive, fuel-sipping, gasolineelectric hybrid model. Not only does the Avalon Hybrid provide comfortable seating for five, with a roomy back seat, the new hybrid is rated by the federal government at 40 miles per gallon in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway — the best of any Avalon ever. These numbers are not unattainable. In regular, not-trying-to-squeeze-every-drop-of-gasoline driving, the test 2013 Avalon Hybrid registered no lower than 36.2 mpg and reached 37.1 mpg in combined city/ highway travel. Also noteworthy: The 2013 Avalon overall is listed as a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, which says predicted reliability should be above average. T h e Ava l o n Hyb r i d ’s starting retail price isn’t as high as many consumers might assume, given all the standard equipment. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $36,365 for the base, 2013 Avalon Hybrid, which is $3,360 more than the base, non-hybrid, 2013 Avalon. But note that the base Avalon Hybrid has XLE Premium trim that includes standard upscale appointments such as power moonroof, leather-trimmed seats, heated and poweradjustable front seats, rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-speaker audio system, 6.1-inch display
screen, Bluetooth handsfree phone controls, pushbutton start, keyless remote entry and leather-wrapped steering wheel plus 10 airbags. Then, there’s the fuel mileage comparison. The non-hybrid, 2013 Avalon, which has a 268-horsepower V-6, is rated by the federal government at 21/31 mpg, which is 19 mpg less in city driving and 8 miles less per gallon in highway driving than the Avalon Hybrid. Still, the Avalon Hybrid is pricier than some other mid-size hybrid sedans that don’t have as much standard equipment and aren’t quite as large in size. As an example, the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid S has a starting MSRP, including destination charge of $26,995. This model does not have a moonroof or leather-covered seats or eight audio speakers, among other things. But the 2014 Fusion Hybrid does have a higher federal government fuel economy rating than the Avalon Hybrid does: 47 mpg in both city and highway travel. Meantime, the 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid, which is shorter in length and height than the Avalon Hybrid, has a starting retail price of $26,700 and federal government fuel economy rating of 36/40 mpg. U.S. Avalon sales this year through July were on the upswing by 134 percent, totaling 43,040. Camry sales so far this year were holding steady. The test Avalon Hybrid, a mid-range XLE Touring model, looked stylish with new, expressive grille and the kind of expressive body lines on the sides that could have come from a Hyundai Sonata. Overall, the car was attractively proportioned, too, though the sizable rear parcel shelf would sometimes
catch and reflect the sun’s rays and detract from rearward visibility via the inside rearview mirror. A sunshine-splashed dashboard also sometimes made it difficult to see items shown on the sizable display screen atop the middle of the car’s dashboard. Still, the interior was a nice surprise, with controls and gauges well arranged and an expansive atmosphere in both front and back seats and a lot of seat travel available for the front seats. Stretching 16.2 feet in length, the Avalon Hybrid provides 42.1 inches of legroom in the front seat and 39.2 inches for back-seat passengers. This is more than that inside a Camry Hybrid, which is slightly smaller than an Avalon and uses much the same hybrid system. But room-wise, the Avalon Hybrid’s trunk, which provides a commendable 14 cubic feet of cargo space, is noteworthy. Yes, this is less than the non-hybrid Avalon’s 16cubic-foot trunk. But hybrids have smaller trunks because the hybrid’s battery pack for storing electric power onboard typically is under and/or behind the back seats. So, the Avalon Hybrid’s flat-floored, 14 cubic feet is way more than the 10.8 cubic feet in Optima Hybrid’s trunk and the 12 cubic feet in the Fusion Hybrid. Besides space and comfort, Toyota engineers made sure to make the Avalon’s ride firmer than before to provide a more dynamic driving experience, even in the hybrid. The test car didn’t handle like a wallowy, floating, big sedan. Rather, the driver felt a palpable connection to the road and body motions were more controlled than ever. The flipside of this more-

taut ride is passengers can notice sounds and some vibrations from road bumps, including recessed manhole covers. And steering still felt a bit numb. Like its non-hybrid version, the Avalon Hybrid uses regular unleaded gasoline, and the travel range between fillups can be impressive. The tester, for example, had a 600-mile-plus range, which softened the $64 bill at the gasoline station. It’s true that the hybrid’s
156-horsepower, 2.5-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder can sound buzzy and stressed during hard accelerations. Torque peaks at 156 foot-pounds at 4,500 rpm, and with the two electric motors added in, total horsepower is 200. But nearly all the time during the test drive, driver and passengers couldn’t tell by sound or feel when power was all from the engine or all electric or a mix. Power came on smooth-
ly and seamlessly and was managed by a continuously variable transmission that the driver operated like an automatic. What passengers did notice was how quiet the Avalon Hybrid could be in city traffic as silent electric power propelled it forward for short spurts. The battery pack is the older-generation nickelmetal hydride, not the new lithium ion that’s in the Fusion.

AUTO NEWS FROM AROUND SOUTH CENTRAL PA
H & H Collision Center Raises Money for Wounded Vet For the past 8 years, H&H Collision Center has held an annual Golf Tournament to show appreciation for our Customers, Insurance Companies, and Agents. For our 8th Annual Golf Outing in 2013, we wanted to do something really special. Dave Hoffman, the Manager of H&H Collision Center, decided to have a fund raiser for a local Disabled Veteran. We contacted the Chambersburg Landis McCleaf Marine Corp. Rod Hoffman, was instrumental in assisting us with information regarding Marine Sergeant Zachary Stinson. Upon hearing Sgt. Stinson’s story, we were very eager to be able to help him with building his family a home that would be handicapped equipped. After hearing his remarkable story, you will understand why we chose Sgt. Stinson. In fall of 2010, Sgt. Stinson was on his first deployment in Marjah, Afghanistan. On November 9th, 2010 his life severely changed. While on a foot patrol with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Sgt. Stinson stepped on to a live IED bomb. This traumatic event resulted in him having both legs amputated. Sgt. Stinson’s right leg was below the knee and his left leg above the knee. Lifesaving measures by the corpsman readied him for MEDEVAC, all the while a gun battle ensued with shots being fired all around them. Sgt Stinson recalls asking the corpsman to tell his wife, Tesa, (who was expecting their first child at the time) that he loved her. Medically evacuated by helicopter, Sgt. Stinson was first treated at Camp Bastion and then, The Craig Joint Theater Hospital in Bagram while in Afghanistan before he was transported to Landstuhl, Germany. It was six days until he arrived back in the United States of America at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Washington, DC., where he remained for 3 months. At this time he was transferred to Richmond, VA and spent over 30 days there. Sgt. Stinson was then moved to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington D.C., where he spent more than a year. After this he was transferred to the newly renamed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. While there, he endured more than 25 surgeries. It was then that he had his right leg further amputated to above the knee. Sgt. Stinson had to undergo extensive therapy sessions as an inpatient and an outpatient as well. Presently Sgt. Stinson enjoys spending time with his wife, Tesa and their young daughter. He also enjoys working out, playing video games, hunting and fishing. He would like to one day get a hands on job somewhere in his hometown area of either Shippensburg or Chambersburg. Sgt. Stinson has overcome so many challenges. Sgt. Zachary E. Stinson is truly a remarkable young man, to have experienced all that he has had to endure and remain so positive and strong. He is a true American Hero!!! All proceeds that were raised thru this Golf Tournament went to help assist Sgt. and Mrs. Stinson in building a home that will be specially adapted just for him. Homes for
Our Troops is the organization in charge of the build and where you can make donations in Sgt. Zachary E. Stinson’s name. Our Goal was to raise over $5,000.00 for the Stinson’s. We are very proud of what we were able to raise as our contribution for their home. We were able to raise $5,430.19, which superseded our goal by far. We are honored to have been able to help such a wonderful young soldier and his family. This seems so simple and insignificant in comparison to all this young man has lost while serving his country. We would not have been able to achieve all that we did without the help of all our sponsors! The outreach support from the community was unbelievable, sponsors included many Restaurants, Insurance Agents, local businesses, individuals, and of course all the Golfers that participated in the event. We had well over 45 prizes raffles, that were donated by varies business in and around the Chambersburg, Shippensburg areas. We did a 50/50 raffle and the Golfers proudly purchased many Mulligans. We would like to thank all of our sponsors so very much for all they did to help us make this event a huge success. We would also like to thank all of the Golfers for without them it wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you everyone for helping H&H Chevrolet Cadillac, and H&H Collision Center’s 2013 Golf Tournament such a success. We can’t express our gratitude enough for your help and support in honoring a great American Hero and his family, Sgt. Zachary Stinson. This was the most rewarding event I have ever been a part of, stated Mr. Hoffman. For the 2014 9th annual golf outing we will again hold the benefit to help a disabled veteran. If you wish to preregister for next year’s event, please call Dave Hoffman 717-532-2121 and we will call and send information when the dates and itinerary is set.
FROM MR. AND MRS. STINSON “We are so thankful for everyone who came out to support us. It is absolutely amazing to watch people get together to show their support for my family and myself, and to welcome us back home. We are so ready to settle back in and take on this next chapter. Thank you” THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE SPONSORS!
