Infiniti adds intelligent SUV, the JX35 By ANN M. JOB

In Focus

The Associated Press

The new-for-2013 Infiniti JX35 is a nicely sized, well-appointed, luxury crossover sport utility vehicle with impressive room for seven people and combined government fuel economy rating that equals or is better than that of some fivepassenger luxury SUVs. Slotted below Infiniti’s QX56 SUV in price and power, the JX35 also is the rare, seven-seat SUV with a continuously variable transmission. CVTs, which drivers operate as they would automatic transmissions, are designed to maximize fuel economy. But most SUVs, even those with five seats, come with traditional automatic transmissions. Built in Tennessee, the JX35 has more legroom in its front- and second-row seats than the larger Buick Enclave and truckier Cadillac Escalade. An innovative JX35 second-row tilts and slides forward 5.5 inches, even with a child safety seat attached, to allow easier access to the third row, which has more headroom than a pricier Audi Q7. The V-6-powered JX35 has federal government fuel economy ratings of 18 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway for a front-wheel drive model, for a combined fuel mileage of 21 mpg. Also garnering a combined government fuel mileage rating of 21 mpg is the luxury crossover segment sales leader, the V-6-powered Lexus RX 350, which has seats for only five people. Infiniti’s aggressive pricing and generous standard features boost the family appeal of the JX35 even more. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, for a base, front-wheel drive, 2013 JX35 is $41,600. Standard on every JX35 are keyless entry with push-button start, leather-trimmed seats, sunroof, power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, 18-inch wheels,

2013 Infiniti JX35 AWD BASE PRICE: $40,650 for frontwheel drive model; $42,050 for all-wheel drive model. PRICE AS TESTED: $56,190. TYPE: Front engine, all-wheeldrive, seven-passenger, luxury sport utility vehicle. ENGINE: 3.5-liter, double overhead cam V-6. MILEAGE: 18 mpg (city), 23 mpg (highway). TOP SPEED: NA. LENGTH: 196.4 inches. WHEELBASE: 114.2 inches. CURB WEIGHT: 4,419 pounds. BUILT AT: Smyrna, Tenn.

Associated Press

This undated photo made available by Infiniti shows the 2013 Infiniti JX35 sport utility vehicle. light-emitting-diode taillamps, bi-xenon headlights, fog lamps, rearview camera, six-speaker audio system with speed-sensitive automatic volume control and power, multi-adjustable and heated driver and front-passenger seats. The base JX35 is $1,395 more than the starting base retail price of a front-wheel drive, 2013 Lexus RX 350. But the base RX 350 doesn’t include rearview camera, leathertrimmed, heated seats or moonroof. The lowest starting MSRP, including destination charge, for an all-wheel drive, 2013 JX35 is $43,000. This compares with the $39,325 MSRP, including destination charge, for a 2012 Buick Enclave with all-wheel drive. But the base Enclave has cloth seats with limited power adjustment on the passenger front seat and does not include standard rearview camera or

heated front seats. The test JX35 looked like an upscale family hauler in Black Obsidian paint with Graphite color interior. There was no confusing the shiny, silver grille with anything other than an Infiniti, though when I walked up to the JX35 from the front side, the double-wave design of the hood was reminiscent of a Dodge. The overall size of the JX35, which is 8.6 inches longer from bumper to bumper than an RX 350 but 5.5 inches shorter than an Enclave, is Goldilocks perfect — neither too big nor too small for three rows of seats. It also allows a mid-size sedanlike 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row seats. Front-seat headroom of 40.7 inches is better than the 38.6 inches in an Enclave, and the JX35’s 38.3 inches of second-row head-

room are better than what’s in the Audi Q7. Certainly, no one felt constrained in the test vehicle. The two-passenger third row is the most confining, as it is in other SUVs. But the 36.5 inches of headroom was adequate for a 6-foottall passenger, and the 30.8 inches of legroom bests the 29.2 inches in the back of the Q7. The standard sunroof, plus optional second- and third-row moonroof, provided an airy feel inside, and the leather seats looked good and were easy to slide onto and out of. There was a cushy feel to the seats, not a dramatic firmness. The ride, overall, was more on the plush side — not wallowy, but not sporty-taut, either. The JX35 body leaned some in long, sweeping curves. Riding on optional 20inch wheels, the tester sent some road bumps on to passengers, but they were minor.

The JX35’s lone engine — a 3.5liter, double overhead cam V-6 — supplies 265 horsepower and 248 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. This is a bit less than the power in major competitors. For example, the diesel V-6 in Audi’s Q7 generates 406 footpounds of torque at a low 1,750 rpm, and the Enclave’s V-6 delivers 288 horsepower and 270 footpounds of torque at 3,400 rpm. Still, the test JX35 with all-wheel drive moved steadily and with some verve when pressed, though the drone of the CVT grew tiring during acceleration. Additionally, activating the Eco mode sapped some energy. The JX35 comes with a sport mode that mimics a regular automatic with gear shifts, but it wasn’t overly impressive in the tester. Indeed, despite being in Eco mode most of the time, the tester got just 17.4 mpg in driving that was 70 percent in the city. The government rating for city driving is 18 mpg in an all-wheel drive JX35. So, the range on the test vehicle was less than 340 miles. The large display screen atop the center of the dashboard was colorful and easy to read, and large buttons and knobs that were nicely grouped and arranged reduced fumbling for controls.

All About Cars

2012 Chevrolet Impala LT: Full-size sedan By Mike Blake

The Chevrolet Impala firmly and successfully rides through its ninth generation as Chevrolet’s fan-pleasing full-size sedan. With its tenth generation expected to begin in 2014, the 2012 Impala is currently America’s top-selling large sedan (as this vehicle was being tested). Launched in 1958 as the top trim in the Bel Air line, the muscle car powered up with 340 horses by 1962 and 409hp by the time it became its own line in 1965. Impala remained popular for two decades, was eliminated, then brought back for a two-year-run from 1994-1996, and in its third incarnation, Impala has regained its popularity and then some since it re-emerged in 1999.

New engine is quiet, efficient Built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, the 2012 Impala gains an allnew 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 engine as standard on all models. The DOHC engine is accompanied by a six-speed automatic transmission that replaces the previous model year’s four-speed gearbox for more efficiency, a new, quieter fuel pump and isolated fuel rail that also reduces fuel noise and new cylinder heads that enhance airflow to the combustion chamber for greater efficiency. The exterior gets a new front grille this year, as well as modified fog lamps, a new rear-end design, rear decklid molding, dual exhaust outlets and new 16-inch cast aluminum wheels, while the LT trim gains a rear spoiler. The interior gains a few tech tweaks, a leather shift knob, an optional front beach seat, flip-and-fold rear seats with armrests and a pass-through from the trunk.

Graceful and classic architecture The front-engine front-wheel drive 5-to-6-passenger sedan is constructed with quiet steel construction, and while it is not as long-bodied as it was during its initial run in the 1960s, Impala is graceful, classic, classy and clean with a forward stance, high rear, power adjustable body-color mirrors, halogen composite headlamps with automatic lamp control, body-color moldings and dual

stainless steel exhaust. In fullsize dimensions, Impala measures 200.4 inches long, 72.9 inches wide and 58.7 inches high on a 110.5-inch wheelbase, coming in at a curb weight of 3555 lbs. with a weight distribution of 61/39. Impala’s new power source is its 300-horsepower 3.6-liter directinjection V-6 engine. In concert with the six-speed transmission, the E85 FlexFuel capable system is EPA-estimated at 18mpg in city driving and 30mpg on the highway. On E85, the estimates are 14/22. My weeklong test yielded an average of 22.2mpg in mixeduse driving, on regular unleaded fuel and no E85 fill-ups.

Comfortable family sedan Impala is a quiet, comfortable family sedan, and the power upgrade over previous engines also make it a driver’s car. Impala’s independent front MacPherson strut coil-over-spring suspension with twin-tube dampers and gascharged valving, coil springs and hollow 30-mm stabilizer bar, and its independent tri-link coil over strut rear with twin-tube dampers, variable-rate coil springs and 16-mm solid stabilizer bar are smooth, forgiving and luxurious. However, that smooth luxury makes for vague handling, and the understeer makes sharp turns at speed a challenge, but acceleration and response are formidable. O n t h e t ra c k , I m pa l a wa s straight-line swift, blazing for its niche with a 6.6-second zero-to60mph dash during a quartermile run of 15.2 seconds, which was about a full second quicker than a run I took in a 2010 model, and about 5 seconds faster for the quarter-mile than I ran in the used 1965 Impala I owned as a teenager. That 283 of yesteryear took almost as long to sprint to 60mph as it took my 2012 tester to go 1760 yards.

Spacious and trendy cabin The intuitive cabin seats five (six with the optional front bench) and is accommodating with 39.4 inches of front headroom and 37.8 inches in row two; legroom is 42.3 inches in the first row and 37.6 in the second seats, and shoulder room goes 58.7 in the front seats and 58.6 in the back seats. Instrumentation is easy to read and the electronics are plentiful, but materials are pedestrian, plastic and plain except for the new woodgrain trim. The cabin includes such trendy features as a six-speaker MP3/CD/radio audio system, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, auxiliary input jack for portable devices such as an iPod, Bluetooth connectivity and dual-zone climate control.

The 2012 Impala starts at $25,760 plus freight for the base LS model and moves up to LT at $27,285 plus freight and LTZ, as was my test car, bases at $30,300 plus $825 for freight. Imperial Blue Metallic paint, and Ebony front leather seating were standard. A power sunroof added $900, for a final sticker as tested of $32,025. ––– Visit www.CarlisleEvents.com for more on the automotive hobby. How mature drivers can cut vehicle costs in half For most of us, driving is a necessity, and so is doing it as cost-effectively as possible even in retirement when most of us stay in our suburban homes. Saving money on automobilerelated expenses like gas and insurance can help free up cash for other important things. Fortunately, many tactics can help you minimize vehicle costs, from doing basic maintenance tasks yourself to taking a driver safety course that could qualify you for insurance discounts. The driving experts at AARP recommend drivers 50 and older focus on three key areas of opportunity for cost-reduction:

Older drivers have lower rates of police-reported crashes per capita, limit their driving to familiar routes and better weather, and drive fewer miles than other age groups, but accident rates per mile start increasing when drivers reach 70, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Insurance Older drivers have lower rates of police-reported crashes per capita, limit their driving to familiar routes and better weather, and drive fewer miles than other age groups, but accident rates per mile start increasing when drivers reach 70, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Even if your personal driving record is clean, your age may put you in a demographic that insurance companies view as higher risk - and you’ll pay higher auto insurance premiums because of it. Shopping around for auto insurance may help you secure a better rate, but if you’re facing very high premiums, it may make sense to take an extra step. Many insurers offer discounts to drivers who complete driver safety courses. Check with your insurance company to see if such a discount is available to you, then

look for a program, like AARP Driver Safety’s course, that is specifically designed to help people 50 and older refresh their driving skills and adapt to agerelated changes. There are no tests to take for the course. To find an in-person course near you, visit www.aarp.org/ findacourse, or sign up for an online course.

Fuel efficiency After insurance, fuel can be one of the highest costs of operating a vehicle, especially for those who travel far, such as older drivers commuting from winter to summer residences. Car makers have improved overall fuel efficiency for many newer vehicles, but you can take steps to cut your gas costs more - even if you have an older car. AARP offers these tips for im-

proving fuel efficiency: • Lighten the load. The heavier your vehicle and contents, the more gas it will consume moving down the road. Remove excess weight from the trunk and avoid traveling with luggage or bike racks that create drag, add weight and decrease fuel economy. • Watch your speed. While it’s important to safely keep pace with the flow of traffic around you, keep in mind most cars are at the optimum fuel efficiency around 50 mph. • Drive smoothly. Abrupt stops and starts, and fast, erratic movements in traffic all decrease fuel economy. • Try to consolidate trips. Rather than making one trip to the grocery store today, then the doctor’s office tomorrow and your book club the next day, try to group errands together.

ARA

Lighten the load. The heavier your vehicle and contents, the more gas it will consume moving down the road. Starting a cold engine consumes more gas than keeping it running longer.

Maintenance With the average age of cars on the road approaching 11 years, according to R.L. Polk & Co., an automotive market research firm, routine maintenance is more important than ever. Doing simple tasks like oil changes, windshield wiper replacement and air filter changes yourself can help save you money. Tasks that you can easily perform yourself include: • Changing the oil and oil filter. • Changing the air filter.

• Monitoring tire inflation and adding air if needed. • Checking and cleaning battery connections. • Replacing worn windshield wipers. • Replacing headlight or brake light bulbs. Other DIY tasks, like replacing brake pads or sparkplugs, or flushing the radiator, require a bit more know-how. Fortunately, plenty of online resources offer step-by-step guides for doing more complex vehicle maintenance tasks. And, you can always check with your local community college to see if they offer a basic auto maintenance course. –ARA Content
