Silverado redesigned for refinement

The Chevrolet Silverado began as a work truck, and in 40 years it has earned its rep as a hard-working truck that has also gained refinement. The 2014 redesign amplifies both characteristics and is new from hood to hitch, engineered to be stronger, smarter and more capable than ever before. Among the hundreds of improvements are three new EcoTec3 engines — a V-6 and two V-8s; a stronger, quieter and more comfortable cab; a sophisticated new interior with features and connectivity; revised steering, suspension and brakes for improved ride and handling and several innovative cargo-managing solutions for the bed. First and foremost Silverado is a solid pickup truck, and in the LTZ Z71 trim I tested, the cabin was luxurious, the ride was polished, the performance assertive, and the look was stylish.

inches, while the Silverado LTZ’s base curb weight comes in at 5370 pounds.

Three EcoTec engines A truck’s success begins under the hood and Silverado provides three power choices — three all-new EcoTec3 engines. The 4.3-liter V-6 rated at 285 hp and 305 lbs-ft of torque for an estimated 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway on gas and 12/15 on E85. The 5.3-liter V-8 is certified at 355 hp and 383 lbs-ft of torque for 16/23 on gas and 12/15 on E85. The new 6.2-liter V-8 that powered my test truck was mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and is certified at 420 hp and 460 lbs-ft of torque. EPA rated at 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, the system delivered an average of 20.2 mpg in mixed-use driving, and I didn’t spare the throttle, as I loved hearing the engine engage and utilize all the torque at its disposal. Gear changes were smooth and acceleration showed only slight hesitation uphill at speed. Handling seemed improved over the last generation and the suspension easily smooths out most road irregularities. The steering is car-like and the cabin is quiet, with less cabin sway during quick turns than in the previous generation. My 6.2-liter engine did not disappoint and scooted from zero to 60 mph in a nichequick 6.3 seconds en route to a 14.8-second quarter-mile – good times for a tall, 6foot-high, 2.7-ton truck.

Silverado’s exterior merges its strong truck heritage with sophistication and style. Adding a muscular appearance to a more aerodynamic stance, Silverado is bold, with its twin-port grille, full-width bumper, dual power dome hood, sculpted body sides and fender flares. The new front end is engineered to improve sealing for more efficient cooling, while the roof and tailgate spoiler were shaped in the wind tunnel to smooth airflow over the truck for reduced drag. New inlaid doors, which fit into recesses in the bodyside, reduce wind noise for a quieter cab. The Silverado 1500 with a Crew Cab fits full-size parameters – nearly identical to the last generation. With a short 5-foot-8-inch box it measures 230 inches long (the long box adds 19 inches), 80 inches wide and 74 inches high on a 143.5-inch Roomy wheelbase. Ground clear- accommodations ance is 8.9 inches and stepInside, Silverado is roomier in height measures 22.2 than ever, gaining 1.6 inches

of front headroom to come in at 42.8 inches and adding 1.3 inches kin the cab at 40.5. Legroom is up a spacious 4 inches in front to 45.3 and gains 6 inches in the cab at 40.9, while shoulder room comes in at 64.8 and 65.7 — about the same as before. The driver’s cabin and cab are filled with luxury accommodations, high-tech amenities, comfort and entertainment items, as well as driver information center and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The base Silverado starts at $26,670 for a Regular Cab and a Standard Box and moves up in five base price ranges to the Crew Cab and Standard Box at $35,095. My test 1500 came with a Crew Cab and Short Box and the basic truck would have started at $34,795, but 4-Wheel Drive adds $3,000 and in LTZ Z71 trim it based at $42,995 including $1,095 in destination freight charges. The Deep Ruby Metallic exterior and Jet Black leather interior were standard, but 20-inch chrome wheels added $1,395. The LTZ Plus Package added $1,165 for power adjustable

pedals, Bose premium audio system, front and rear Park Assist and a heated, leatherwrapped, color-keyed steering wheel. The Driver Alert Package ($845) added safetyalert technologies designed to help the driver prevent a collision and included Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert and a Safety Alert Seat that vibrates the driver’s seat cushion to alert the driver when the truck is moving out of its lane without activating a turn signal

or when the truck is rapidly approaching another vehicle in front. A bed protection package with rubber bed mat added $805, the 6.2-liter engine added $1,995, polished exhaust tip added $185, 6inch rectangular black tubular assist step was $700, front and rear molded splash guards were $150, Chevrolet MyLink audio system with 8-inch color touch, navigation and SiriusXM Radio added $795, heated and cooled seating added $650

Ford’s Hinrichs sees slower NEW 2013 SUBARU growth in sales LEGACY SEDAN By Dee-Ann Durbin and Justin Pritchard Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Joe Hinrichs was named Ford Motor Co.’s president of the Americas one year ago, after a three-year stint as head of Ford’s Asian operations. It was a bumpy start. Quality issues delayed sales of the new Lincoln MKZ sedan last spring. Then, over the summer, the government cut its fuel mileage estimates for Ford’s C-Max hybrid. Ford had to send checks to unhappy owners who had complained that the C-Max wasn’t meeting its advertised numbers. Ford has celebrated some successes. U.S. sales rose 12 percent through October, outpacing the industry. The Ford’s F-Series pickup truck has retained its commanding lead in the market despite newer competition from General Motors and Chrysler. This month, FSeries sales passed the total number sold in all of 2012, and should post the best annual total since 2006. Sales of Ford’s Fusion sedan and Escape SUV have also been strong. Here’s what Hinrichs told The Associated Press on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Auto Show this week:

Q: You’ve been in this job for a year now. What have you learned about this market? How does this challenge compare to the challenge of running Asia?

Hinrichs: I think when you talk about the North America market, especially the United States, we continue to see an exciting opportunity for market growth for Ford. We’ve gained more

market share this year than any other automaker. We’ve had record profits through the first three quarters of the year. So the key for North America is continuing the positive momentum. AsiaPacific, especially China, has tremendous growth opportunities — beyond compare around the world. But also, it’s the same thing: Great product launches lead to great market share gains lead to profitable growth. So I think at the high level it’s similar, but of course the markets are very different.

Q: What do you think U.S. auto sales will look like in the coming year? Have consumers recovered faster than you expected? Hinrichs: Consumers have recovered faster than I think anyone expected if you go back to 2008 or 2009. If you look at the last three calendar years, based on where we project 2013 — so ‘11, ‘12 and ‘13 — the U.S. industry will gain over a million units of sales each successive year over the previous year. The consumer has been very resilient. A lot of that has to do with the average age of the car portfolio. At 11.4 years, it’s the oldest it’s ever been, so replacement demand is a big part of it. I think we’ll continue to see growth in the industry in the years ahead, but at a slower pace, which I think will be healthy for the industry. We see next year the GDP growth in the U.S. economy being about 2.5 percent, and over time as replacement demand, while still important, diminishes, the economy is going to have to push the growth. And that’s not just happening at the degree it would need to to push the industry a lot further ahead.

and a power sunroof was $995. After incentives and $1,500 cash back, the price as tested of this 2014 Silverado LTZ Z71 was $52,415. Visit www.CarlisleEvents. com for more on the automotive hobby.

Nissan’s Versa Note is versatile, thrifty By Ann M. Job Associated Press

N i ssa n ’s s m a l l Ve rsa hatchback, renamed the Versa Note for 2014, is a low-priced, high-utility car with an attractive, fresh exterior, notable fuel economy and a surprisingly roomy back seat that accommodates even 6-foot adults. The five-seat Versa Note also offers high-tech features not found in other hatchbacks, such as an allaround-view camera system that lets the driver see what is nearby the car on all four sides. Drivers will appreciate that the Note with its 109horsepower, four-cylinder engine is rated by the federal government at 31 miles per gallon in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway. This top rating is for Notes equipped with a fuelthrifty continuously variable transmission (CVT). Unfortunately, though, the Versa Note’s engine power is lower than many competitors’. And while the Note is a new version of Nissan’s Versa line, the Note’s safety rating in frontal crash testing by the federal government isn’t any better than the three out of five stars that the longer-running Versa sedan received. Standard safety features on all Notes include frontal, side and curtain air bags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $14,800 for a base, 2014 Note is lower than many competitors’. As an example, the base, 2013 Honda Fit hatchback has a starting retail price of $16,215. But be aware that the base Versa Note S comes with five-speed, manual transmission that produced a lower government fuel mileage rating of 27/36 mpg. The base Note also has manual, roll-down

windows and a steering wheel that tilts but does not telescope. In comparison, the base Fit with five-speed manual and higher-power, 117horsepower, four-cylinder engine comes standard with power windows, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel and cruise control, among other things. Meantime, the 2014 Ford Fiesta hatchback, which is 3 inches shorter in overall length than the Note, has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $15,395 with five-speed manual and 120-horsepower, four-cylinder engine. The base Fiesta comes standard with telescoping and tilt steering wheel, rear spoiler, Ford’s Sync voice control, carpeted floor mats and a driver’s seat with sixway, manual adjustment rather than the four-way, manual adjustment on the Note. For Note buyers to get the fuel-saving CVT, which comes along with automatic grille shutter that closes when needed to improve aerodynamics and fuel mileage, they must move up to the Versa Note S Plus, with a starting retail price of $16,050. People must experience the Note’s back seat to believe it. Less than 14 feet long and about the size of a Fit hatchback, the Note has 38.3 inches of legroom back there. It’s enough to allow 6-footers to extend their legs. It’s also nearly 4 inches more than the Fit has, 1.1 inches more than the Ford Fiesta hatchback has and is even more back-seat legroom than is found in the much larger Nissan Altima mid-size sedan. Front-seat passengers in the Versa Note aren’t squeezed, either, as legroom up there totals 41.3 inches, which is on par with some sport utility vehicles. Just keep in mind that while two adults in back

do well, three people in the back of a Note is tight. Still, back windows in the Note are sizable and go down virtually the whole way. Also improving comfort in the Note: Passengers don’t sit low to the ground. Even back-seat riders sit up at a decent level and have good views out. But the seat foam in the test SV model had a cheap feel and was less supportive than preferred. This was especially true as road bumps came through regularly in the Note, and ripples in asphalt were felt, and not just in the seat cushions but up to passengers’ backs. The ride in the test Note was noisy. Road and engine sounds were heard all the time, and the CVT kept the driver guessing when engine revving would quiet down. T h e No te ’s 1 .6 - l i te r, double overhead cam four cyl i n d e r wa s l a c k l u s ter during acceleration and seemed to work hard during highway merges. Torque peaks at 107 footp o u n d s a t 4,4 0 0 r p m . This compares with 112 foot-pounds at 5,000 rpm for the Fiesta’s 1.6-liter four cylinder and the Fit’s 106 foot-pounds at 4.800 rpm. The Note’s commendable fuel economy ratings are not far-fetched. In mostly city driving, the tester averaged 30 mpg, just 1 mpg off from the federal government number. And this was without the driver focusing on top mileage. Fuel mileage was 32 mpg with highway travel added. Because the Note is 5 feet tall, it affords front-seat passengers a generous 40.8 inches of headroom, which is more than the 39.1 inches in the Fiesta hatchback and a tad more than the 40.4 inches in the front seats of the Fit. The cargo area behind the rear seats provides 18.8 cubic feet of space, which compares with 14.9 cubic

Hydrogen cars head to showrooms Three automakers unveiled fuel cell vehicles Wednesday, which may be available as early as spring By Tom Krisher and Yuri Kageyama Associated Press

DETROIT — Cars that run on hydrogen and exhaust only water vapor are emerging to challenge electric vehicles as the world’s transportation of the future. At auto shows on two continents Wednesday, three automakers were unveiling hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to be delivered to the general public as early as spring of next year. Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. will be the first to the mass market in the U.S. with a hydrogen-powered Tucson small SUV for lease next spring. Details were to come later Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Honda also revealed plans in Los Angeles for a car due out in 2015. Earlier, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota promised a mass-produced fuel cell car by 2015 in Japan and 2016 in the U.S. Hydrogen cars are appealing because unlike electric vehicles, they have the range of a typical gasoline car and can be refueled quickly. Experts say the industry also has overcome safety and reliability concerns that have hindered distribution in the past. But hydrogen cars still have a glaring downside — refueling stations are scarce, and costly to build. Critics say the cars are still a long way from mass production. Consumers can expect costs in line with some luxury models. In Tokyo, Toyota promised a price of 5 million yen ($50,000) to 10

million yen ($100,000), and as close to the lower figure as possible. That’s comparable to its Lexus sedans, but a range that makes the once space-age experiment with fuel cells more credible. Even as battery-powered and hybrid-electric cars took on conventional gasoline models in the past decade, automakers continued research into hydrogen fuel cells, said Paul Mutolo, director of external partnerships for the Cornell University Energy Materials Center. Manufacturers now are limited only by costs and the lack of filling stations, he said. Hydrogen cars, Mutolo said, have an advantage over battery-powered electric cars because drivers don’t have to worry about running out of electricity and having to wait hours for recharging. “It’s very similar to the kind of behavior that drivers have come to expect from their gasoline cars,” he said. Hydrogen fuel cells use a complex chemical process to separate electrons and protons in hydrogen gas molecules. The electrons move toward a positive pole, and the movement creates electricity. That powers a car’s electric motor, which turns the wheels. “You’re literally ripping the electrons from inside the molecule, generating electricity,” Mutolo said. Since the hydrogen isn’t burned, there’s no pollution. Instead, oxygen also is pumped into the system, and when it meets the hydrogen ions and electrons, that creates water and heat. The only byproduct is water. A fuel cell produces only about one volt of electricity, so many are stacked to create enough juice. Hydrogen costs as little as $3 for an amount needed to power a car the same distance as a gallon of gasoline,

Associated Press

Honda FCEV Concept is debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in Los Angeles Wednesday. Mutolo said. Hyundai’s plan includes leasing the hydrogen SUVs starting in the Los Angeles area, where most of the state’s nine refueling stations are located. California lawmakers have allocated $100 million to build 100 more. Mutolo estimates it will take at least 10 years for stations to spread nationwide. Manufacturers likely will lose money on hydrogen cars at first, but costs will decrease as precious metals are reduced in the fuel cells, he said. Toyota said its new fuel cell vehicle will be for ordinary customers, not just officials and celebrities. The car will go on sale in Japan in 2015 and within a year

later in Europe and U.S. Toyota’s fuel cell car is on display as a “concept” model called FCV at the Tokyo show, where alternative fuel is grabbing the spotlight. The FCV looks ready to hit the streets, similar to the Prius gas-electric hybrid. Honda, which has leased about two-dozen fuel cell cars since 2005, took the wraps off a futuristic-looking FCEV concept vehicle in Los Angeles. The concept vehicle shows the style of a 300-mile range fuel cell car that will be marketed in the U.S. and Japan in 2015 and in Europe after that. Honda wouldn’t say if it will be offered for lease or purchase. All major automakers,

including General Motors Co. and Daimler, have been working on fuel cells for decades. But the prospect of reaching showrooms was not very real until recently. Skeptics say hydrogenfueling stations are more expensive than electric car charging stations, partly because electricity is almost everywhere and new and safe ways for produc-

ing, storing and transferring hydrogen will be needed. Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Nissan Motor Co., which has bet heavily on electric vehicles for its future, is one vocal skeptic. “Having a prototype is easy. The challenge is massmarketing,” he told reporters. He said he did not see a mass-market fuel cell as viable before 2020.

CUMBERLAND VALLEY MOTORS DODGE PRESENTS IT’S FIRST EVER...

Lexus launches face-lifted CT 200h in China By Kelvin Chan Associated Press GUANGZHOU, China — While a flurry of new car models are being paraded this week at auto shows in Los Angeles and Tokyo, Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus is using the week’s other big auto show in China to unveil the latest version of its CT 200h. This four door hatchback hybrid is positioned as a sporty luxury compact. The 2014 model is the first major update since it was launched in China in 2011. Changes are mostly cosmetic to give the car a fresher look. The hybrid powertrain stays the same. The F Sport version also gets a roof spoiler and suspension tweaks. Lexus said it chose to launch the car at the Guangzhou show in southern China as a sign of its commitment to the country, which is the world’s biggest auto market and the second biggest for the company. The automaker said it would hold “more and more” global premiers in China, where auto sales grew 7.1 percent last year to 15.5 million vehicles. For automakers, China’s also a key market for hybrid cars, as the government encourages the development of new energy vehicles to cut air pollution and raise fuel efficiency. Lexus said hybrids account for nearly 30 percent of sales in China, making it the company’s third biggest hybrid market worldwide. Here are some highlights of the new 2014 CT 200h:

out 134 horsepower.

Outside The biggest change to the car is its face-lift. The car gets a more aggressive and sporty front end thanks to Lexus’ new “spindle grille” design, part of a broader effort to give all of the upscale brand’s models a new face. Other new touches include 10-spoke alloy wheels and a shark fin-style roof antenna. The rear bumper is also restyled with new vents at the corners. Buyers can also opt for two-tone color schemes that feature a black roof.

Inside Door panel and center console trim choices now include Lexus’ Shimamoku synthetic wood. Shimamoku, which is Japanese for striped wood, is made by layering alternate strips of dark and light wood veneer in a process that takes up to 38 days. Five new upholstery colors include sand gold, topaz brown, moss, ivory and camel. The instrument display now includes a 4.2 inch (10.7 cm) flat screen that can be linked to the sound system and controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. The stereo system’s speakers are the world’s first to use bamboo fibers, which the automaker says result in “noticeably improved sound quality.”

Fuel economy Expect it to be about the same: 43 miles per gallon in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

Safety agency opens inquiry into Model S Three of the Tesla Motors cars caught fire in less than two months By Bill Vlasic and Jaclyn Trop New York Times News Service

DETROIT — A federal safety investigation of the Tesla Motors electric Model S sedan announced Tuesday comes at a critical juncture for the car and the company. For the first time, regulators are examining whether the design of the high-end vehicle and its advanced lithium-ion battery pack are defective and the cause of two battery fires. After garnering high praise for its styling, performance and eco-friendly electric power, the Model S will be the subject of scrutiny by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, said the company welcomed the inquiry. At issue is whether the size, shape and chemical makeup of the car’s battery makes it prone to fires when its lithium-ion cells are punctured in a collision. Musk has repeatedly defended the design of the Model S, which won early accolades for its safety from regulators and independent publications like Consumer Reports. But the car has caught fire on three occasions in less than two months — twice in the United States and once in Mexico. By comparison, the Nissan Leaf — the best-selling all-electric car on the market — has not had any reported fires. A federal defect investigation can take months to complete and could include crash tests of the vehicle well beyond the ordinary government testing done on cars before introduction. Tesla said it would increase the ground clearance of the

Model S, and it also pledged to extend its current vehicle warranty to cover fire damage. But those changes are not expected to divert the focus of the investigation, or minimize the potential for the safety agency to order structural changes and a vehicle recall. “Adjustments or modifications of the vehicle will not affect the inquiry,” said Karl Brauer, an analyst with the auto research firm Kelley Blue Book. “That is out of Tesla’s hands now, and the range of potential outcomes is very wide.” As a startup company in the keenly competitive global auto industry, Tesla has, until now, enjoyed remarkable early success with its Model S luxury sedan. Musk’s track record as a Silicon Valley entrepreneur gave the company credibility that helped it secure a $465 million loan from the Department of Energy in 2010. Glowing reviews of the Model S, which is priced at $70,000 and higher, fueled investor interest in a public stock offering that allowed Tesla to pay back its government loans early. The company has since become a darling of Wall Street because of steadily growing sales of the Model S and Tesla’s promise to bring less expensive models to market in the future. Tesla stock, which has slid about 35 percent from its high, closed at $126.09 on Tuesday. But the safety agency inquiry has raised questions about what was perceived to be one of Tesla’s greatest strengths — its technological superiority. Musk has not retreated from his position that the Model S is safer from fires than vehicles with gasoline

Associated Press

In this Nov. 6 photo provided by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, emergency workers respond to a fire on a Tesla Model S electric car in Smyrna, Tenn. engines. And in a blog posting on the company website on Monday, Musk went so far as to assert that Tesla asked federal regulators to conduct the safety investigation to allay any fears about electric cars. “There is a larger issue at stake,” Musk wrote. “If a false perception about the safety of electric cars is allowed to linger, it will delay the advent of sustainable transport and increase the risk of global climate change, with potentially disastrous consequences worldwide.” The agency denied Tuesday that the inquiry was opened because of a Tesla request. The swift rebuttal of Musk underscores how Tesla’s relentless promotional campaign is wearing thin on regulators charged with making the nation’s vehicles and roadways safe. The agency had originally cleared the Model S of possible defects after the first

vehicle fire, which occurred Oct. 1, when the car struck a metal object on a highway in Kent, Wash., outside of Seattle. A high-speed crash in Mexico on Oct. 18 also resulted in a fire, but that incident was beyond the scope of U.S. regulators. A third fire occurred Nov. 6 on a highway in Smyrna, Tenn., near Nashville, after a Model S ran over a tow hitch in the roadway. That accident prompted regulators to revisit their earlier pronouncement of the car’s safety. “The agency has opened a formal investigation to determine if a safety defect exists in certain Model S vehicles,” the agency said in a statement Tuesday. Automakers generally cooperate with federal investigations of their vehicles and participate in developing safety solutions. Even when a company disputes the agency’s findings — as Chrysler did recently with an investigation of gas tanks

on its Jeep sport utility vehicles — it usually agrees to make changes to the vehicle rather than risk a long, public battle that can damage its reputation. Industry analysts said the Model S inquiry would center on the exposure of its battery pack, a long, flat slab that runs almost the entire length of the underside of the vehicle. Other all-electric cars have smaller battery packs that are not as vulnerable to damage by metal objects in the road. The battery in BMW’s new i3 model, for example, is protected by a thick metal floor, according to the carmaker. BMW also said the electrolytes that store energy in its batteries are suspended in a gel that is less likely to leak than liquid electrolytes could in a collision. BMW said it performed “extensive development” tests on the i3 battery system before introducing the car this year. Tesla is a much smaller

company than BMW or Nissan, and it may not have had the same financial resources for engineering tests. Brauer, the Kelley Blue Book analyst, said the NHTSA investigation would most likely include puncturetesting the battery, and then monitoring chemical reactions that may occur after the battery is damaged. If the design is deemed structurally unsound, the agency could recommend that Tesla add a protective covering to the cars, which would be expensive and could compromise its performance. Whatever the outcome, the inquiry promises to be a lengthy process that could hurt sales of the Model S in the interim. “For a while this company appeared infallible,” Brauer said. “Now the most important thing is that they cooperate with the regulators and do what it takes to regain their safety reputation.’
