Smaller Prius is gas stingy Gas-electric hybrid sports the lowest starting retail price in the United states. ■
By ANN M. JOB For The AssociATed Press
Not counting plug-in cars, the 2012 Toyota Prius c is the most gasoline-stingy auto on the U.S. market, with a combined city/ highway rating of 50 miles a gallon, according to the federal government. Better yet, the starting retail price of $19,710 means the Prius c has the second-lowest base price of any gasoline-electric hybrid in the country. No wonder the 2012 Prius c small hatchback with four-cylinder engine mated to two electric motors and battery pack is a compelling offering for budgetminded consumers and environmentalists who want to reduce oil usage and air emissions. The gas-electric hybrid with the lowest starting retail price in the United States is the 2012 Honda Insight hybrid, which starts at $19,290. But the Insight’s combined city/highway rating from the federal government is 42 mpg. The new-for-2012 Prius c showcases its thrift, even including an onboard computer that can tally how many dollars a trip is costing while the car travels. For example: A 62.2-mile trip at mostly highway speeds in a test car that didn’t get quite the federal mpg cost just under $5.50 at the going price of $3.67 a gallon for regular fuel. All the driver had to do was input the price of the gasoline in the tank and the dollars rolled up in the instrument panel as the miles passed. Computers in most cars display miles-per-gallon but don’t offer a way to input the gasoline price to give the driver the continuous fuel cost of travel. A driver typically must multiply the price-per-gal-

It’s 13 feet from bumper to bumper — which is 19 inches shorter than a “regular,” five-seat Prius hatchback and 4.3 inches shorter than the small Honda Fit. The five-seat Prius c also weighs a lightweight 2,500 pounds and can be buffeted by high winds. The Prius c isn’t sporty, either. Combined horsepower from the engine and two electric motors is 99, which is 35 less than what’s in a larger, regular Prius. But Consumer Reports expects above average reliability. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $19,710 is for a base, 2012 Prius c One hatchback with continuously variable transmission that maximizes fuel economy.
Price can rise to more than $25,000 with the top trim level, Prius c Four, and an option package or two added. Prius c Four includes heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators in them, alloy wheels, heated front seats with SofTex material, navigation system, and tilt and telescoping steering wheel with controls, among other things. A moonroof is an option even on the Four. Besides the Insight, lower price, higher mileage, non-plug-in hatchbacks include the 2012 Scion iQ three-door hatchback with combined city/highway mileage rating of 37 mpg and starting retail price of $15,995. The 2013 Hyundai Accent five door with combined city/highway mileage rating of 34 mpg and 138horsepower four cylinder starts at $15,570 with manual transmis-
sion. The iQ and Accent are not hybrids. A traditional or regular 2012 Prius hybrid with bigger engine and larger passenger compartment than the Prius c has a starting retail price of $24,760. The larger Prius has the same 50-mpg federal government rating of the Prius c in combined city/highway travel, in part because the Prius c isn’t quite as aerodynamic and has an older, slightly less efficient engine. But the Prius c outdoes its older, larger sibling in city mileage, where the federal rating is 53 mpg instead of the bigger Prius’ 51 mpg. The test car, a top-level Prius c Four, was always above 41 mpg even when the driver drove hard. It easily averaged 44.5 mpg in combined city/highway driving without the driver trying to maximize fuel.
Most notable was how smoothly the Prius c moved from electric power to gasoline power. There was no telltale sensation of stumbling or hesitation. The 1.5-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder operates on the fuel-saving Atkinson cycle, and acceleration takes a while — 0 to 60 miles per hour takes 11 seconds. The gas pedal in the tester even seemed a bit stubborn to go down, providing resistance especially in “eco” mode, as if to ask if the power really was needed. The Prius c has an older-technology nickel metal hydride battery pack, rather than lithium ion. Body control is acceptable for such a small car. But the car’s interior can be noisy, with sounds from nearby cars readily coming into the passenger compartment and wind noise getting loud above 55 mph. The turning circle is barely over 31 feet if the car wears standard 15-inch tires, but the tester had optional 16-inchers, which made the turning circle a larger 37.4 feet. The Prius c steering wheel is small, and the steering felt numb at times in the test car. The car horn sounded wimpy. Certainly, this is not a sports car. Passengers felt road vibrations much of the time, and bounced up and down a good bit when the small-wheelbase Prius c traveled over a lengthy highway bridge with expansion cracks. Three adults in the back seat are a tight fit across the narrow Prius c, and they sit on short cushions. Front seats needed more lumbar support in the tester. Meantime, the uplevel SofTex material in the test car was black and got hot in summer sun. Thank goodness the air conditioning came on fast. The Prius c dashboard also was black, with the less-textured, less expensive-looking plastic pieces up near the windshield and better-looking plastic closer to passengers.

2012 Chevrolet Avalanche: Sporty truck with comfort Industry reports indicate that Chevrolet will phase out its Avalanche pick-up after the 2013 model year. The lifestyle truck is considered by General Motors as a 4-door sport utility vehicle/pick-up and perceived by the public as a sporty truck. The Avalanche was supported in the market for its unique lines and utility from its launch in 2001 as a 2002 model, and sold as many a s 93,0 0 0 ve h i c l e s i n 2003, but recent sales have dropped to about 20,000 a year. Thought of as a middle ground between an able, functional pick-up and a pampering and dependable-driving sports-ute, Avalanche gained a solid rep for supplying a smooth ride and diverse versatility.
Full-sized truck with exclusive midgate A full-sized pick-up with a unified cab and cargo bed, highlighted by some of the best bed and cab lines on the market, the 2012 Avalanche has upgraded with hard-drive navigation radio, AM/FM/XM stereo and CD player, USB port, time shift recording capability, leather-wrapped heated steering wheel on the LTZ (my test truck), electronic trailer sway control and hill start assist on its StabiliTrak stability control system, heated seats and available SiriusXM Weather Service. Impressing with its exclusive midgate, which opens to extend the cargocarrying capability from the cargo bed’s 5-foot-3inch-long length to 8 feet 2 inches, Avalanche can carry 4-foot by 8-foot sheets of plywood with the tailgate closed. Storage compartments alongside the cargo box provide abundant and lockable storage. The storage compartments also have drains, so they can be filled with ice and used as coolers. The Av’s exterior features a central-locking tailgate and cargo cover retaining straps, spring-loaded tailgate, assist steps with power-retractable assist steps available on LTZ, heated power-operated outside mirrors and the unique bed-to-cab connection architecture.

Body on frame construction Manufactured in Silao, Mexico, with body on frame construction, Avalanche measures 221.3 inches long, 76.6 inches high and 79.1 inches wide on a 130-inch wheelbase. Step-in height is 22.2 inches, minimum ground clearance goes 9.1 inches and curb weight comes in at a confident 5969 lbs. The cargo box is 63.3 inches long, is 50 inches wide at the wheelhouse, and 47.4 inches high with the midgate open. The base Avalanche comes with 5-passenger seating, premium cloth seats, CD/MP3 player, dual-zone manual climate controls, 17-inch aluminum wheels, roof-mounted luggage rack with side and center rails, Bluetooth wireless technology, front bucket seats with 6-way power, body-color mirror caps and door handles and OnStar® with Directions & Connections®. My test Avalanche LTZ added front bucket seats with 12-way power, perforated leather-appointed seating surfaces, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, Bose® eight-speaker Centerpoint® Surround So u n d sys te m , U l t ra sonic Rear Parking Assist, 20-inch polished-aluminum wheels, SiriusXM™ NavTraffic and navigation radio with rearview camera system. The Z71 off-road package adds even more versatility, but my LTZ was great for comfort, style, lavishness, hauling, towing and riding proudly around town and across the interstates.
Vortec V-8 provides 320hp Powe re d by a Vo r te c 5.3-liter Flex Fuel V-8 engine that puts out 320 hp on gasoline and 335 lbs-ft of torque, Avalanche displays solid acceleration for a large vehicle. With active fuel management and sequential fuel injection, the system is mated to a Hy-

My mixed-use tests revealed an average of 15.1mpg. On the track, my test Avalanche managed a steady, but not inspiring, 8.8second sprint from zero to 60mph, and a quarter-mile trek of 16.9 seconds. Overall, that isn’t bad for a three-ton vehicle that offers refinement and a 7900-lb. tow rating, but it’s not exactly a rocket either. On the road, Avalanche presents a refined experience for a truck. Handling and ride are good for the niche, but truck dimensions and poor rear visibility make the need for the rear camera a necessity.
Spacious accommodations inside The cabin affords spacious seating for five with 41.1 inches of front headroom and 40 inches in row two; legroom is 41.3 up front and 39.1 in the second row and shoulder room is 65.3 and 65.2. Cargo length behind the front row with the
midgate closed is 31.8 inches and with the second row folded, you get 54.3 inches with the midgate closed and 101 inches with it open. The cabin is well appointed as reported above, and safety features are plentiful including head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for seating rows, ABS brake system, and a strong body structure to absorb crash energy and provide a protective “safety cage” around occupants. Available in three trim
levels, the LS trim 2WD starts at $36,800 and 4WD starts at $39,850; the LT starts at $40,195 (2WD) and $43,245 (4WD); my test LTZ started at $47,000 (2WD). My review LTZ in 4WD, bathed in sexy high-gloss Black mated to an Ebony perforated leather interior, based at $50,305. Polished exhaust tips added $125; allweather floor mats added $140; a power sunroof was $995 and a cargo net added $60. Destination and freight charges added $995 for a
sticker price of $52,560, but local dealer incentives took $5000 off the sticker and my test ride came in at $47,560. ––– > Visit www.CarlisleEvents.com for more on the automotive hobby. Ford to recall 485,000 small SUVs to fix throttles By TOM KRISHER AP Auto Writer
DETROIT — Ford is recalling nearly 485,000 Escapes and Mavericks to fix sticking gas pedals that can cause crashes. The worldwide recall affects vehicles from the 2001 through 2004 model years that are powered by 3-liter V-6 engines with cruise control. It comes just over a week after U.S. safety regulators began investigating the small SUVs, which are called Mavericks in Europe. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 68 complaints about the problem, including 13 crashes, nine injuries and one death. A teenage girl died when an Escape crashed in Arizona in January. It’s the third recall in two weeks for the Escape, which was the topselling SUV in the U.S. last month. A week ago Ford recalled 11,500 of the all-new 2013 models with 1.6liter engines because the fuel lines can crack and leak gasoline, causing fires. A few days before that, it recalled 10,000 2013 Escapes to fix carpet padding that could interfere with braking. On the older Escapes, which are completely different from the 2013 models, the cruise control cables can snag on the plastic cover atop the engine and cause the gas pedals to stick, Ford said. For the problem to happen, the pedals must be pushed to or near the floor, and the cruise control cables must have been bent or moved from their original position, Ford spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel said. Cable positions can be changed when the SUVs are

The Ford logo is seen on cars for sale at a Ford dealership in Springfield, Ill. Ford is recalling nearly 485,000 Escapes and Mavericks to fix sticking gas pedals that can cause crashes. The worldwide recall affects the 2001 through 2004 model years that are powered by 3-liter V-6 engines with cruise control. serviced, she said. “This is not a situation where the engine would accelerate or go into a wide-open state on its own,” she said. Dealers will replace the fasteners on the engine cover, raising it so there’s plenty of room for the cruise control cable. Zwiebel said it will take a few weeks to distribute the parts. In the meantime, Escape owners can take their vehicles to dealers, who will disconnect the cruise control and
eliminate the risk of the problem happening, Zwiebel said. Experts say if your car accelerates unexpectedly, you should step on the brake and shift into neutral, steer safely to the roadside, put the car in park and shut off the engine. On July 17, NHTSA announced that it was investigating complaints about sticky throttles on Escapes and Mazda Tributes. Tributes are identical vehicles built by Ford for Mazda. It was unclear whether Tributes would
be included in the recall. NHTSA said investigators would look into whether the sticky throttles could have been caused by repairs made as part of a 2004 recall. About 590,000 Escapes and Tributes were recalled in December of 2004 to fix an accelerator cable defect, and NHTSA documents say the repairs could have damaged the cruise control cable. While Ford said it moved quickly to fix the cruise control problem, Clarence Ditlow, executive direc-
tor of the Center for Auto Safety, a consumer group, accused the company of knowing about the issue since 2005, but failing to take action until the government began its investigation. Some Ford dealers had told the company that cruise control cables had been damaged during 2004 recall repairs, but the company did not know until recently that the problem could cause throttles to stick, Zwiebel said. The Escape has been one of Ford’s most popular vehicles since it went on sale in 2000. More than 2.1 million have been sold. It was the top-selling small SUV in the country in three of the four years covered by the recall. The latest recall affects 421,000 Escapes in the U.S. The rest are in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and some smaller markets. Recalls can often be signs of quality problems in cars, especially if there are several during the first model year. The 2013 Escape, which just arrived in showrooms in June, was recalled twice in one week earlier this month. Ford CEO Alan Mulally told reporters Wednesday that the company quickly recalled the 2013 Escape to take care of customers. “I wouldn’t characterize it at all as a more fundamental issue in the quality,” he said. Two recalls in one week are unusual, but more likely a coincidence than a sign of quality problems, Ditlow said. He questions a vehicle’s quality if it has three recalls in a year. ––– AP Auto Writer Dee-Ann Durbin in Detroit contributed to this report.

Volkswagen Q2 earns jump 18 percent Associated press
FRANKFURT, Germany — Stronger demand from North America and the world’s developing markets helped German automaker Volkswagen record an 18 percent jump in second-quarter earnings. Net profit for the April-June period increased to €5.64 billion ($6.84 billion) from €4.78 billion a year ago. Revenues increased 19 percent to €48.1 billion. The Wolfsburg-based manufacturer said that worldwide demand for cars increased in the second quarter in the US, China, Russia and India, and would rise again in the second half of the year — but at a slower pace. Volkswagen warned the car market would shrink in western Europe, where economies are slowing due to spending cutbacks and consumer worries due to a crisis over too much government debt. The company also reported an earnings increase of 36 percent for the first six months, while revenues rose 23 percent to €95.3 billion. “We can be satisfied with our business performance in the first six months,” CEO Martin Winterkorn said in a statement. “Our strong position on world markets will help us to exceed the development of the overall market despite

It enjoys
a strong business in China and reaps higher margins from its Audi luxury brand. The net profit figure easily beat analyst estimates compiled by FactSet of €2.79 billion. Operating earnings, however, increased by a smaller 3.4 percent to €3.28

Nissan profit down 15 percent, hurt by strong yen aSSOCIATED PRESS
TOKYO — Nissan said Thursday its quarterly profit fell 15 percent from a year earlier as the strong yen bit into car sales. The Yokohama-based company reported a 72.3 billion yen ($900 million) profit, down from 85 billion yen a year earlier. Worldwide sales rose 2.6 percent. Company chairman Carlos Ghosn said Nissan had triumphed in growing sales despite the “harsh economic environment” thanks to its strong model lineup, which includes the Leaf electric car. Japanese automakers have been hammered by the strong yen which erodes profit from cars produced in Japan and then
shipped overseas. Nissan Motor Co. has remained upbeat, however, earlier raising its forecast for the fiscal year through March 2013 to a 400 billion yen ($5 billion) profit, up from its earlier forecast for 290 billion yen ($3.6 billion) profit. The company is gearing up for stronger growth despite the slowdown in Europe, counting on solid demand in emerging markets such as China. Ghosn has said Nissan aims to be the No. 1 Asian brand in China, Russia and India. N issan made a remarkably quick recovery from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters that ravaged much of northeastern Japan and disrupted auto production, selling a record 4.85 million vehicles world-
wide in 2011. It expects to sell 5.35 million this year. Reflecting that strong rebound, its January-March profit had more than doubled to 75.3 billion yen ($941 million). The company’s performance in the most recent quarter reflects a “return to normal,” it said. To counter the unfavorable exchange rate, Japanese car makers are increasingly shifting production abroad, making countries such as Thailand important auto production bases. Last week, the French-Japanese auto alliance of Renault and Nissan announced it is investing $160 million in its South Korean unit to produce Nissan-brandAssociated Press ed Rogue sport-utility vehicles A boy walks at a gallery at the global headquarters of Nissan mostly destined for the United Motor Co. in Yokohama near Tokyo Thursday. Auto Briefs Michelin recalls 841K BFGoodrich, Uniroyal tires COLUMBIA, S.C. — Michelin voluntarily recalled around 841,000 BFGoodrich and Uniroyal tires Thursday because the tread can separate, causing rapid air loss. No deaths or injuries have been reported from the tires, which were made as replacement tires for commercial light trucks and full-sized heavy duty vans from April 2010 until early this year, according to the company. Michelin North America Inc., based in Greenville, S.C., is beginning the recall immediately. Tires will be replaced at no charge. Websites and toll-free numbers have been set up with more information. Quality-control workers started noticing an increase in reported problems with the tires this year. The company has noticed the separation in less than 150 tires, but decided the voluntary recall was needed to protect the safety of drivers, said Michelin’s technical director, Mike Wischhusen. “We constantly monitor our products performance in the field and it was our own internal quality systems that caught this issue,” Wischhusen said. “We caught it very early, based on a very small number of returns.” Michelin’s internal testing shows the problems with the tires have apparently been corrected for those manufactured more recently, Wischhusen said. “A tire is a complex thing. There is rarely one thing you can pinpoint to cause something like this,” he said. The tires being recalled were BFGoodrich commercial tires LT 235/85 and LT245/75 and Uniroyal Laredo tires LT 235/85 and LT245/75.
Tenneco 2Q profit jumps 74 percent on tax benefit LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Tenneco Inc. said Thursday its second-quarter net income jumped 74 percent, boosted by a one-time tax benefit and a double-digit increase in North American sales. The profit beat Wall Street predictions and Tenneco shares surged nearly 9 percent in afternoon trading. The Lake Forest, Ill.-based company, which makes emissions control and other automotive systems, earned $87 million, or $1.42 per share. That’s up from $50 million, or 81 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Excluding the tax benefit, along with restructuring and refinancing costs, the company said it posted an adjusted profit of $1.14 per share for the recent quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet expected a profit of 97 cents per share. Revenue edged up less than 2 percent to $1.92 billion from $1.89 billion. Analysts expected $2.03 billion. –Associated Press
