There are numerous great hiking opportunities in the area, but why not take an easy walk on the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail which is low on hills (there are none) and high on great views of the Valley. The Cumberland Valley Rail Trail is one of the best ways to experience the farming areas of the Cumberland Valley. While some of the trail is lined by trees, a good part of the trail offers long views of the North and South mountains. The views of the mountains include some of the best farm viewing available. It’s always fun to see the horses and cows, and you just might luck out and spot a
red fox, osprey or red tailed hawk. It’s also rewarding to see all the silos spread out along the Valley and from them gain an appreciation for all the farming in our local area. There are 13 new informational signs spaced along the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail which tell the stories of Agriculture in the Cumberland Valley and the important role the Cumberland Valley Railroad played in the Civil War. A hike on the Rail Trail can be a superb learning experience and scenic day out. The Rail Trail can be accessed from the town park in Newville on McFarland Street, Oakville (parking and picnic area) or from the Shippensburg Township Park. All sections of the trail have their attractions, and an “Out and Back” from either end or the middle is a great way to spend quality outside time with friends and family. Also, getting out on the trail early in the season lets you scout out the best places to pick wild berries as the season moves toward summer. 2WKHU +LNLQJ %LNLQJ 2SSRUWXQLWLHV LQ WKH 9DOOH\ (DV\ 7UDLOV The whole family can enjoy a stroll along the Army Heritage Trail at the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center. This mile-long loop trail is the perfect warm up or wind down for any day outdoors. While on the trail, experience an interpretive timeline of U.S. history. Large, military exhibits include a Huey helicopter, tank, Civil War cabins and WWI trench system. Find more relaxing hiking and biking opportunities at the Cumberland County Hiker-Biker Trail located in Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Entrances to the trail can be found at the beautiful Laurel and Fuller lakes and the 4-mile out and back trail is ideal for easy hiking and biking. Discover the scenic and laid-back hiking that LeTort Spring Run and Nature Trail has to offer in Carlisle. This 1.5 mile, grass covered ballast trail follows one of the finest limestone trout streams in the country, LeTort Spring Run.
0RGHUDWH 'LI¿ FXOW 7UDLOV To get your adrenaline pumping and for a real challenge, take on one of the more difficult hiking trails in Cumberland Valley. Sunset Rocks Trail’s rewarding 8.3 miles includes short climbs but leads to beautiful views and ruins of a top-secret World War II POW camp. This trail takes you through the
Michaux State Forest for opportunities to see an assortment of plant, tree and wildlife species. Flat Rock Trail, located in Colonel Denning State Park, is a difficult hike with a very worthwhile ending. This 5-mile, strenuous hike, ends with a half-mile of climbing over rocks to a stunning vista of Cumberland Valley. The short, but steep, hike up to Pole Steeple results in an excellent viewpoint for the central part of the South Mountain Massif. From the top you can see the Sunset Rocks on Little Rocky Ridge and, nearly 500 feet below, Laurel Lake with its beaches and dams.

&DUOLVOH :HOFRPHV $QRWKHU 5HYYHG 8S $XWR 6HDVRQ Carlisle Events has been hosting automotive themed shows and gatherings at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds since 1974 and Fall Carlisle. What started as a singular event then, doubled in 1977 with the addition of Spring Carlisle. Since then, Carlisle Events has evolved into a big time player in the collector car hobby, playing host to or being part of 17 events.
hottest and ever evolving trends in the motorsports world. The weekend features some of the hottest, loudest, fastest and most tricked-out cars, trucks and SUVs in the region. Add to that a great array of displays, guests, stunts, live music, competitions and more and the audience who attends P&S will know they’ve been part of a true festival atmosphere.
Of those 17 events, 13 take place in Pennsylvania, with 11 held in Carlisle. In all, Carlisle Events and Carlisle the town have benefited tremendously for nearly 40 years. Shows at Carlisle generate nearly $100 million annually for the local economy and welcome nearly 500,000 enthusiasts to central Pennsylvania.
Immediately following P&S is the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals. This event also provides a festival atmosphere by showcasing over 1,200 classic and high-performance vehicles. Show goers can tour the grounds and enjoy imports and kit cars from at least seven different countries, representing thirty-seven unique manufacturers. Plus, there is great food, music and the Passport Program, allowing everyone onsite the chance to win prizes. In addition, there is autocross racing, club gatherings, cruises to historic and scenic locations, activities for kids, a downtown block party and more.
The Carlisle based season starts with Spring Carlisle. This event, much like Fall Carlisle, is a five-day collector car swap meet, car corral and plays host to a two-day automotive auction. Combined, nearly 200,000 people traverse to a sold out fairgrounds to find automotive pieces and parts, collectibles, restoration items, literature, merchandise and more. In addition, the auction, presented by Auctions America, showcases 300 cars per auction, allowing for a great array of automotive history to be bought and sold, all to the highest bidder. Further, Spring and Fall Carlisle offer thousands of cars for sale by owner as part of the car corral. Here, face to face deals can be made via sale or trade. The grounds offer financing and notary service too, making transactions that much easier. Spring Carlisle also plays host to the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow, an engine build competition where local and regional high school students compete for scholarship money by tearing down and rebuilding a Chevy small block engine. Following Spring Carlisle, the specialty season starts with Carlisle Performance & Style (P&S), the first of eight straight automotive themed events. P&S is a motorsports and lifestyle festival that celebrates the
The next three shows on the Carlisle schedule, Carlisle Ford Nationals, Carlisle GM Nationals and Carlisle Chrysler Nationals make up the “Summer of Muscle.” These events highlight special guests, seminars, test drives and a wide array of automotive history. In addition, each show displays an iconic muscle car, the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro and Dodge Charger. These three marquee machines, combined with decades of automotive excellence make the months of June and July some of the hottest on the Carlisle calendar. Best of all, the Carlisle Ford Nationals allow patrons and car owners alike to go downtown on Saturday for a very special all-Ford themed parade and street party. Four wheels give way to two (and in some cases three) as part of Carlisle Bike Fest in mid-July. This open-air celebration has been taking Carlisle by storm since 2002 and is a great outlet for riders to cruise the scenic Cumberland Valley before, during or after the event.
Bike Fest offers family fun, live music all weekend, a special dealer mall where bikes and apparel are for sale and best of all; free demo rides courtesy of some of the biggest names in the hobby. Carlisle Bike Fest encourages every rider to make the event a journey rather than simply a destination.
Best of all, with 82 acres of facility at Carlisle, attendees will have multiple interaction options, including turkey calls, dog-training demonstrations, archery shoots and more. The first time only happens once, so all outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to be a part of this event, the first weekend after Labor Day.
With two automotive themed events left, the big trucks roll in as part of the Carlisle Truck Nationals. While all events at Carlisle are family oriented, this one is the most family friendly of them all. The weekend hosts trucks of all shapes and sizes. There are Monster Truck rides and competitions, plus the backbone of America, the big rig is on display too. The Carlisle Truck Nationals also feature an off road course for those looking to get a little mud on the tires, plus live music, both on the main stage and within the pavilion as part of the ever popular big rig light show.
All told, Carlisle Events has expanded from 10 events in 2010 to 17 in 2013. The Miller families have added or become partner in events that take place in Auburn, Indiana (Auburn Spring and Auburn Fall), Zephyrhills, Florida (Fall AutoFest and Winter AutoFest), Allentown (Auto Mania) and Bloomsburg (Bloomsburg Nationals powered by Carlisle Events). Whether it’s one event for an enthusiast, 17 or somewhere in-between, Carlisle offers something for everyone - everywhere!
Carlisle’s last automotive themed event is its most popular. Corvettes at Carlisle take place during the final weekend of August and is the largest all-Corvette event in the world. There is a downtown Corvette parade, special displays, GM Engineers, test drives, free seminars and some of the nicest cars (and people) within the automotive hobby all in one place at one time. The weekend plays host to nearly 5,000 Corvettes spanning the life of the car and in some cases, one of a kind cars are on display. Finally, new to the schedule is the Carlisle Sports and Outdoor Nationals. Though not a true automotive themed event, there will be some motorized components to the weekend. The event highlights the outdoor lifestyle with hunting and fishing displays, seminars, special guests, test rides and more. Enthusiasts of all ages will be hands on as they take part in various seminars and sessions designed to enhance their outdoor skill set. There will be a swap meet and corral for used equipment or merchandise too.

The creative and forward-thinking organizers have allowed Plein Air to grow and expand much beyond its three years. The 2013 Plein Air Festival will be held on May 17-19, 2013 and organizers will continue to educate the public on “Plein Air” with expanded workshops and children’s activities, and by adding a photography component to the event.
Visitors can leisurely stroll through the park and watch artists of all ages painting an interpretation of the natural beauty and architecture they see. Start planning for a fun-filled and outdoors-themed Labor Day Weekend. The 3rd Annual South Mountain Outdoors returns in 2013 and is celebrating with a collection of events that will attract families looking for all-age fun to savor the end of summer. South Mountain Outdoors is a celebration of outdoor activities, destinations, and businesses within the South Mountain landscape that includes parts of Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and York counties.
(August 31) through Monday (September 2) will highlight the Gettysburg Wine and Fruit Trail, kayaking and free fishing at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, horsedrawn carriage tours of Caledonia State Park, tours of the Dill’s Tavern, hikes and tours around Renfrew Museum, and much more.

The Village Artisans Gallery, located at 321 Walnut St., Boiling Springs, carries the work of more than 200 American artists and highlights artists and artisans from Pennsylvania. It has become a place where the arts community is celebrated in the Valley. This shop is owned and operated by the equally interesting PJ Heyman. Heyman got her beginnings as a stained glass artist who started by taking a class from the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and setting up a studio space in her basement. After feeling confident about her skills she started selling her work at craft shows, through word of mouth and at a local gallery.
“Having a studio above ground and a place to sell my work was always a goal,” Heyman explains. “Fortunately my mom lived in the house on the other side of Fourth Street of what was then a Brethren Church, now The Village Artisans Gallery. When the building went up for sale I envisioned a nice daylight filled space that would be perfect for creating and displaying artwork.” After six months of renovating the building the gallery opened for business on April 1, 1995 with a stained glass studio, a duck decoy carver studio, Gay Foltz’ folk art carving studio and a gallery space with the work of 50 other fine craft makers and artists. Having been a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen since 1980 and participating in craft shows for many years, Heyman was able to ask these craft makers and artists whose work she admired if they’d allow her to take their work on consignment. Now she has artists request to have their work in her gallery. Gay Foltz still has a working studio space on site where visitors can see her create the whimsical carvings she is known for.
“I’ve always wanted to feature the unique, quality work of American fine craft makers and fine artists. There are many wonderfully talented artists in Pennsylvania and the rest of the states
whose work should be seen. I feel fortunate to be able to represent some of these artists,” shares Heyman. What separates the Village Artisans Gallery from others is the sense of pride and true passion for the arts you can see and feel when you enter Heyman’s shop. She constantly works with community partners to showcase all the fine artisans we are lucky to have in our backyards. Heyman was acknowledged at the 2012 Cumberland Valley Tourism Conference as the Partner of Year for her outstanding commitment to promoting tourism and developing the arts community. Her shop was recognized as a Niche 2011 Top Retailer winner and has won the Best in the Valley – Shopping Award for all three years of the program’s life. Patty, a multimedia artist, has been exploring her wide ranging interest in art since her retirement as an art teacher. A lover of animals she is working on drawings, collages and paintings of them as well as the realistic humorous clay sculptures for which she is known.

The Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) is moving to a new spot in downtown Carlisle. They will open in early May 2013 at 38 W. Pomfret St. and are looking forward to being a part of this funky street that is sprinkled with unique shops and restaurants. For 20 years CALC has been committed to serving and enriching the community by encouraging creativity and selfesteem through the exploration and appreciation of the visual arts. This new location will allow them to serve more artists, teach more students, collaborate further with non-profits, and increase visitation by being pedestrian friendly.
2nd Floor Gallery is located in a historic church at 105 S. Market St. and was built in 1859. The gallery houses over 500 works of fine art and seven artist studios. Some of the works are from local artisans, including the gallery owner.
The Garden Gallery, at 10 N. Hanover St., features artwork and sculpture from locally and nationally recognized artists from New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Kansas. The gallery also offers custom frame and photo restoration services. Nancy Stamm’s Galleria, at 2 North Hanover St., features works by Nancy Stamm herself, as well as framing, repair and other art related services.
Brath & Hughes Fine Art Gallery, located at 41 W. Main St., is a renovated bank that now holds artwork from over 50 local and regional artists. Enjoy special exhibits in “The Vault.” Studio 39 Fine Art Gallery is an artists’ working studio and gallery located at 39 E. Main St. Artists are there to create their work in a beautiful space. The gallery displays original fine artwork along with limited giclee prints and cards.
Metropolis Collective, at 17 W. Main St., offers fine art and performances with a twist. The collective exhibits an eclectic variety of contemporary fine art and also hosts musical and artistic performances. Art Center School & Galleries, at 18 Artcraft Dr., is housed in an old barn and offers art lessons and gallery exhibits. Painting, drawing and pottery classes are available for ages 2 and up.

The U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center recently opened a new permanent exhibit titled “The Soldier’s Experience” at their facility. This interactive exhibit is very family friendly and allows you to either leisurely stroll through the museum space or, if you have the time, explore each area in depth. There are areas that focus on the major wars that the U.S. has been involved with, including a changing exhibit space that currently features Civil War history. Each display is conveniently labeled with easy-to-read descriptions that allow you and the family to casually filter throughout the museum space. These displays feature a tank, uniforms, weapons and artillery. If you truly want to immerse yourself in the history there is plenty of space and exhibits to do that. A few of the highlights include a parachute simulation where you sit in a parachute seat and can attempt to guide yourself down to safety, a bunker where you sit and watch a video from the eyes of the soldiers waiting inside (the seats actually rumble from the mortar
shells falling above the hideout), and a soldier’s gear exhibit where you can pick up the gear and understand the weight our soldiers carry. For those with a deeper interest, there are small display cases full of artifacts and descriptions, more in-depth videos to watch at each display, and tons of snippets of historical information all over the walls. If you visit, don’t forget to pick up a dog tag from the Visitor Information Desk. The tag will have a bar code on it that when scanned, will allow you to hear the story of that soldier’s life as you make your way through the exhibit. And finally, before you leave you can even write e-mails to soldiers stationed overseas during your visit. It is a one-ofa-kind way to experience U.S. military history. The Cumberland County Historical Society is also featuring an assortment of special events throughout the upcoming months that tell unique stories about Cumberland Valley in the Civil War. The main exhibit, which opened March 15th and runs through October 26, 2013, is titled “1863 Invasion in the Valley”. This exhibit tells the story of Confederate and Union forces from Shippensburg to Camp Hill through artifacts, documents and special videos.
A new Distinguished Speaker Series is also being hosted by the Cumberland County Historical Society titled “Cumberland Divided: The Politics of Civil War in the Cumberland Valley”. This series features guest speaker Matthew Pinsker and he will host the following three discussions that begin at 6:15 p.m. and include a reception at 7:00 p.m. The costs for these programs are $45/members and $60/non-members.
