It’s that time of year — time to dust off your patio furniture, fill your planters and set up to spend the spring outdoors. While expanding an outdoor space is a top renovation project for homeowners and renters alike, it does not have to induce a state of pre-spring stress. With a few simple tips, you can create an outdoor space that adds value and comfort to your home.
The base of any great outdoor space is a clean slate. Start with a good scrub and power wash. Check out these DIY remodeling trends for simple and unique ways to refresh the most used rooms in the home.
1. Mini-makeover kits
You may be the type who prefers to opt out when it comes to getting your hands dirty. If so, you will be pleased to know that as the DIY or the “do-it-yourself” movement grows, so are the increasingly easy product/project solutions. Many larger retailers have caught on to this home DIY trend and have begun stocking mini-makeover kits. Each kit is designed for a specific project with simple application tools.
Among the hottest right now: kits that include everything you need for countertop, cabinet or appliance refinishing. The new Giani Granite countertop kit covers all typical existing counter surfaces and transforms your laminate or composite material into the look of natural granite. These kits stress the ease of application as “being easy enough for anyone.” Nuvo Cabinet refinishing kits are designed for the DIYer who is looking for an easy makeover project. They do not require pre-priming, sanding or even removing the cabinet doors. So before you hire a contractor, check out the minimakeover movement because remodeling may now be simple enough for even the most DIY challenged.

Decorate with light, capture spring Brandpoint
Something about spring seems to inspire us to lavish attention on our homes. Whether enthusiastically cleaning or freshening decor, Americans seize spring as an opportunity to breathe new life into interior spaces. While painting and decluttering are great ways to revitalize home decor, for sheer spring-like impact it’s hard to beat decorating with light. Incorporating light into interior design can go far beyond a few strategically placed, attractive lamps and some upgraded overhead lights. It’s possible to use both natural and artificial lighting to complement other decor and architectural elements, and to create a brighter, upbeat mood that’s perfect for warm weather. Not sure where to begin? Here are a few concepts to keep in mind as you begin decorating with light:
Natural beauty There’s no debating the benefits of natural light for boosting mood. After dark, short winter days, spring brings abundant sunshine, and you can put all that natural light to work in your home. Boost daylighting by lightening up window treatments to admit as much sunshine as possible, choose fresh paint colors that interplay well with the direction from which light enters a room, and consider adding skylights to rooms that demand drama or where adding a window isn’t practical. A relatively low cost home improvement that can be accomplished by a professional in a day or two or over a single weekend, adding a skylight not only enhances home decor, it delivers energysaving benefits as well. Skylights can help reduce dependence on artificial lighting — saving money on electricity bills. And, if you
choose an Energy Star certified solar-powered, fresh-air skylight like those made by Velux America and add remote-controlled, solarpowered blinds, you can improve the skylight’s energy performance rating by as much as 45 percent while improving indoor air quality through the venting effect of open skylights (which close automatically in case of rain). Solar-powered skylights and blinds qualify for a 30 percent federal tax credit, as does the cost of installation. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more.
Lightening colors Some hues absorb more light, making them appear darker, which causes the room to look dark as well. Spring is a great time to lighten colors in the home, and not just wall colors. Fresh paint brightens any room, but to amplify the effect, choose lighter, less intense colors
A combination of hinged roof windows and skylights, with décor-enhancing and energy-efficient blinds, add style while providing natural light and fresh air. such as pastel yellows, peaches and such as upholstery fabric, accent rugs, window treatments and wall blues. Pattern Continued from D3 make a bold statement,” Pliess said. • Paint a large canvas from an art supply store in a vibrant blue or purple or use tape to block out a pattern and paint in several colors. Alternatively, cover the canvas in a wildly patterned fabric. • Display a small group
of whatever you collect — teacups, books, brass or carved wood pieces, vases, pottery, photos, even gloves or shoes. If you don’t have a collection, start one by visiting flea markets or tag sales. “Pick three or five items and arrange on a shelf, on top of a nightstand or console table, in an unused fireplace, or in the middle of the coffee table,”
Sproules said. • Bring in a subtle metallic element by covering the inside of a dark lampshade with glitter or metallic spray paint. Or both — spray paint first, then add glitter. Light Continued from D6 art. Choose colors that speak to you of spring, whether it’s an Easter egg pale purple, a cheerful sky blue or a bright grass green. Replace heavy winter drapes with translucent sheers that admit natural light and give rooms an airy, open feeling.
Upgrading light sources
While you take steps to maximize the amount of natural light that enters you home, artificial lighting will always be needed, especially when spring showers darken the skies for a while. Choose light fixtures — including floor and table lamps — that continue the bright, easy
atmosphere you’ve already created with color and natural light. Keep in mind the importance of layering light with a mix of sources throughout a room, and choose lighting styles that fit the room’s purpose. For example, in kitchens where a lot of work gets done, overhead and under-counter lights provide the best illumination for cooking and other chores. In bedrooms, wall sconces and table lamps provide softer, more soothing light.
Don’t overlook energy efficiency when you’re revamping your artificial lighting. Spring is a great time to boost your home’s energy efficiency by replacing old, electricity-guzzling incandescent light bulbs with energy-sipping CFLs and LEDs. While these bulbs may cost more to purchase, you’ll save money over their usable life. Energy.gov says these bulbs use 25 to 80 percent less energy than incandescents, and can last three to 25 times longer.

Use wood in your spring spruce-up entertaining area, Mark and Theresa Clement, home improvement pros and spokespersons for Wood, Naturally, offer simple, do-it-yourself tips for incorporating wood into your spring home improvement projects:
Brandpoint
Thinking of sprucing up your home for spring? You’re not alone; one in three homeowners say they’ll take on at least one home improvement project in the first half of 2014, according to a recent survey by Burst Media. And it turns out, freshening your home for spring is a smart investment. Home sales and prices are up, and mortgage rates are still considered low by historical standards. The combination is a recipe for a strong 2014 home remodeling forecast. Homeowners are regaining equity in their homes, and that confidence is expected to spur them to take on deferred projects for their own enjoyment, or upgrade their homes for sale.
Prepping decks
One of the best things you can do in the spring to spruce up your house is to clean and refinish your wood deck. In its annual survey, Remodeling Magazine reports that wood deck additions deliver the second highest return on investment of the home improvement projects surveyed. If you’re looking for a way to make your

natural beauty of the wood to show through. Stains may contain a little pigment (labeled as “tone” or “transparent”), be semi-transparent or come in solid colors. Avoid paint, which can form a film on top of the wood and bubble or flake. Can’t decide between a semitransparent stain and a water-repellant sealer? Try using the sealer first. If you change your mind later, it’s easy to switch to a semitransparent stain when the deck needs to be refinished. If you do opt for a sealer, use one that contains ultraviolet light-blockers to protect against sun damage and mildewcides to inhibit the growth of mildew.
“One of the best things you can do in the spring to spruce up your house is to clean and refinish your wood deck,” Mark says. “The natural beauty of a well-maintained deck transforms a backyard into a gathering place.” After you’ve carefully cleaned the deck to remove dirt and debris, choose a finish. Both sealers and stains are designed to seal out elements. Clear sealers contain Add crown molding no pigment, allowing the Crown molding imparts
an upscale, elegant air to any room — and you only need basic DIY tools to install it. “Crown molding bridges the junction of walls and ceilings — a prominent visual location where an architectural accent can really shine,” says Theresa. “While crown molding is a high-impact, higher-difficulty project, it’s well within the abilities of most DIYers. Plus, you probably already have the tools you need in your toolbox — with a miter saw, nails and a hammer, you can transform your favorite room with a custom finish.” W h e n c h o os i n g yo u r molding, remember to keep a consistent scale from floor to ceiling. Wood Continued from D8 crown molding and skimp on the base or casings, but molding sizes need to be balanced throughout the room. Wherever possible, use corner pieces, plinth blocks and other transition pieces. They make installation simpler, minimize the need for miter cuts and help joints stay closed despite seasonal changes in humidity. Finally, don’t paint your crown molding and trim. Opt for a clear sealer and allow the natural texture of the wood to shine through, adding warmth, personalization and a natural touch.
Install wainscoting
Wainscoting has long been a hallmark of fine construction and design. Wood paneling is applied to a lower section of wall — typically in dining rooms, but also in kitchens, hallways and even bedrooms.
If you crave old-world elegance in your modern home, wainscoting is an easy, costeffective way to achieve that look. Depending on the style you select and how you choose to finish your wainscoting, you can create whimsy or elegance, rustic appeal or modern sophistication. If you choose to panel with wainscoting, it’s important to ensure pieces are level. If yours will have a top cap, a router — a power tool used to bevel or round an edge on a square piece of wood — can provide nice detail at the top of panels. Finally, while wainscoting is frequently painted, there’s no rule that says you must paint yours. Consider a simple clear sealer or semitransparent stain that will allow the natural beauty and character of the wood to shine through. Opening door to space, privacy Brandpoint Homeowners, builders and remodelers always look for innovative and new ways to enhance existing spaces during makeovers and room renovations. Johnson Hardware recently introduced the Series 200WM wall mount door hardware, an exclusively designed system for mounting sliding doors to interior walls. Not to be confused with pocket doors, which slide into a wall, the Series 200WM has a track-androller system that attaches to the wall, for quick installation and easy operation. This is an ideal solution for walls constructed of brick or concrete block, or for wood-framed walls that contain pipes or wiring that would make it dif-

ficult and costly to install traditional pocket doors. Unlike a standard hinged door that requires up to 14 square feet of floor space to swing open, a door mounted with the Series 200WM hardware takes up little more space than the thickness of the door. And because the door slides open, a table, chair, desk or other furniture piece can be placed beside the doorway without interfering with the door’s operation. The heavy-duty Series 200WM wall mount hardware system is rated for commercial and residential use, and can support doors weighing up to 400 pounds. It can be used with doors of any height and virtually any thickness of 1 1/8 inch or greater. The Series 200WM will accommodate single door open-
ings to 96 inches wide and converging door openings to 192 inches wide. The Series 200WM system includes: • One thick-walled, precision-extruded aluminum I-beam track, which is available in: 48, 60, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 192 inches for accommodating doors measuring up to 96 inches wide. The tracks are manufactured to exact tolerances to ensure a precise fit with the mounting brackets and four-wheeled hangers. • Heavy-duty extruded aluminum mounting brackets that can be positioned anywhere along the I-beam track for secure fastening to wall studs, blocking or other support. Systems include enough brackets for 16 inches on center fastening to wall. • Two four-wheeled
