Personal libraries can be retreats By Kim Cook Associated Press

With the advent of tablets, cellphones and e-readers, could the book-lined home library go the way of the formal dining room? Not a chance, designers and retailers say. Digital and print books can co-exist, says House Beautiful’s editor in chief Newell Turner. “When there’s an endless river of (digital) content, the words, text and images we choose to print and bind into a physical book will make (it) even more special,” he said.

And books, in their variety of shapes and sizes, can be art in their own right, she says. Certainly, many people display richly illustrated coffee table books. And at Hearst’s October 2013 Designer Visions show house in New York, Jamie Drake took the books-as-art notion literally: For his House Beautiful apartment, he turned large books spine sides in and stacked them geometrically in wall recesses to flank a fireplace as sculptural art. “ B o o k s a re p re c i o u s and beautiful, both their See Library, RE4 Associated Press

she say. “I think we’ll always love the physical aspect of a book in hand, but I’ve found I buy more and more of my new fiction online.” New York interior designer Elaine Griffin sees the role of home libraries changing. “We’ve come a long way from the English country home-inspired libraries of the ‘80s — those spaces that looked like Carson (the butler on “Downton Abbey”) might come in at any moment to do a little dusting,”

Griffin says. “Today’s home libraries are retreats, actually — places to retreat as an individual from the more chaotic, group-themed spaces of the rest of the house.” Home libraries are reading sanctuaries, she says, but clients often want a TV included. “The space is an alternative to the Great Room, used for solo viewing, for snuggling, for seclusion.” M a ny m o d e r n b o o kshelves are multi-purpose, with space to display ob-

jects as well as reading matter. All Modern stocks TFG Connections’ black powder-coated steel frame with java oak shelves; the components can be configured a number of ways. Modloft’s Pearl bookcase has open shelves in a contemporary zigzag design; finishes include white, wenge (a dark wood) and walnut with chrome supports. C rea te a n e nve l o p e d space by running shelves up to the ceiling; wood

tones keep the ambience warm, but consider white or even an interesting color — creamy yellow or rich carmine (deep red), for example — so books, accessories and art will pop. Add a rolling library ladder; Home Depot offers several in maple, cherry or oak finishes. Spanish design house Playoffice turns a run-ofthe-mill home library into a playhouse with a sturdy mesh net suspended across the whole space like an

enormous hammock. Kids (and adults) can take pillows and books up to the net to read and, literally, hang out. The studio has also designed a clever “Secret Reading” wall — a series of cupboards made from inexpensive chipboard that includes bookshelves and kid-size cushioned cubbies. Doors can be closed to hide the secret readers and other stuff. Puck lights are built into the cubby ceilings.

Top 2014 decor trend: Personalized design Brandpoint Interior design is in a constant state of transformation, and this year homeowners are taking control. The “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality is giving ground to the desire for personalized design that reflects the exact needs and design aesthetic of the residents. In 2014, more people will actively embrace the role of designer in order to create a home that is truly one of a kind. “We’re at a fascinating point in the evolution of the interior design process. Interior design professionals once ruled the roost, but

that’s all changed with design TV, blogs and the Internet,” says Elaine Griffin, New York interior designer and author of “Design Rules.” “Clients today are well educated and have taken back the power. They’re so knowledgeable that they’re doing it themselves.” Assuming the role of designer doesn’t have to be intimidating. Griffin offers a few expert tips for taking your home design into your own hands and creating a custom space that’s perfectly personalized:

Research and check twice

Taking the time to properly research and educate yourself is important so you get beautiful results without unwanted surprises. “You want to know what your options are in terms of price, value, quality, design and style,” says Griffin. “What’s returnable? What’s not? Sometimes custom means you buy it, you own it. Do your research.” Griffin also suggests being cautious when measuring. “Always measure twice, buy once,” she says. “That’s the first place where DIYers fall short. You only have one option when you’re going custom - just right. Scaled drawings should be involved.”

Customize visible features Griffin suggests investing in highly visible features of your home. “Like in the bathroom, you can focus on something that’s focal-point-worthy, like the KOHLER Artifacts faucet collection. It’s a piece that just belongs to you,” she says. Artifacts collection allows you to create a custom faucet by choosing from a variety of spouts, handles and finishes for a look that’s all your own. Window treatments and lamp shades are other highly visible features of the home that are too often ignored. Updating these features can instantly breathe new personality into a room. “Lamp shades deliver great bang for the buck; remember you always want to take the lamp with you when shopping,”

Griffin suggests.

Go-anywhere upgrades great for kitchens and baths Brandpoint S o m e u p g ra d e s l o o k laughable in the wrong room: plush carpeting in the bathroom or custom drapes in a kitchen. A handful of go-anywhere upgrades work especially well in kitchens and baths - and can raise those rooms from merely functional to inspiringly fashionable. Of course, virtually any upgrade you make to a kitchen or bathroom will pay off in the long run. Those rooms continue to attract buyers to homes, and deliver high returns at the time of resale. A major kitchen remodel of $53,000-plus yields nearly

69 percent return on investment, and a major bathroom remodel of more than $61,000 tops a 70 percent return, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report. The right upgrades, however, enhance both your home value and your enjoyment of two of the most important rooms in any house. If you’re looking for an upgrade that will work equally well in your kitchen or bath, consider these improvements: Add a skylight. Few upgrades fit equally well in a bathroom or kitchen, but a See Upgrades, RE12

Top 10 home decor trends for 2014 Brandpoint

Renew. Rejuvenate. Reinvigorate. The same objectives people have when making their personal New Year’s resolutions can be just as easily be applied to their homes. There’s no better time to give a home a fresh look, whether it’s incorporating a new color palette, adding accessories, repurposing furniture or putting something interesting up on the walls.

A kaleidoscope of color

Residential interior designer Gary McBournie recommends happy hues such as turquoise for a kitchen, chartreuse for a dining room and coral for a bedroom. Roger Hazard, a Sharon Springs, NY designer who starred in the Emmy-nominated “Sell This House,” agrees that color palettes will embrace a variety of bold, punchy accent colors but also notes a seismic shift in neutrals from the “brown fatigue” of browns and beiges to bright gallery whites and truly neutral grays. Purples

can be paired with accents of copper and well-worn leather in a masculine den; layered with gold, gray and white for an elegant bedroom; or highlighted against subway tile and chrome fixtures for a statement master bathroom.

geodes and natural gems, feather-adorned pillows and sharkskin as a rich table finish. Stone and stone veneers make for an interesting organic interior wall covering, says Debbie Wiener of My Designing Solutions, as do sticks gathered in groups as triptychs or propped up against the wall.

Every wall has a story Todd Imholte, president of Murals Your Way, predicts that wall murals will be even more popular next year as more homeowners and business owners embrace this unique, distinctive way to transform any room. Simple to install and remove, Murals Your Way’s more than 750,000 images, along with the ability to create a personal mural from a photograph, make wall murals an attractive and affordable design trend.

Lighten up Lighting can make a key difference in a home by setting the atmosphere of a room or helping showcase decor elements. LED bulbs deliver the same warm glow as traditional incandescents but use 84 percent less energy and last up to 20 years, according to Maxwell Ryan, founder and CEO of Apartment Therapy. Interior design expert and InStyleModern.com executive Maria Samuels suggests multitiered chandeliers and other ornamental fixtures using LED lights to give a modern twist instead of traditional artificial illumination.

It’s only natural Miami-based ASID and IIDA award-winning interior and furniture designer Bea Pila sees natural elements increasingly created into luxurious furnishings. Look for lamps embellished with

The furniture forecast Pila notes that 60s-in-

spired acrylic furnishings can be timeless when designed into a classic silhouette, with the pureness of the acrylic’s clearness creating a striking effect. Washington, DC designer Darlene Molnar predicts that velvet sofas will be a top trend in 2014, with jewel colors or gray bringing a soft elegance to rooms after years of sharp clean lines. And furniture designer Clint Parker notes that Earth-friendly, sustainable eco-furniture is gaining steam, with new composites and fabrics such as hemp and sorghum making the concept more accessible.

Accessorize the positive

Anything goes in the world of accessories. Pila notes an African influence in lamps made of horn and Kuba cloths fashioned into pillows, rugs and blankets, while Ian Kennedy of Ruby + George touts Native American-inspired artwork, rugs and antlers passed down from generation to generation. Wiener suggests See Trends, RE14

Upgrades Continued from RE10 skylight affords unique benefits to either room. In baths, fresh air skylights admit natural light and provide passive ventilation while providing more privacy than windows. In kitchens, they can reduce the need for artificial lighting and help carry moist air and cooking fumes out of the room. What’s more, skylights can help enhance a home’s overall energy efficiency. Energy Star-qualified solar powered fresh

air skylights, like those made by Velux America reduce dependency on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation. Paired with remote-controlled solar powered blinds, the skylights become even more efficient, stylish, and affordable, since both products, as well as installation costs, qualify for a 30 percent Federal tax credit. To learn more about skylights visit www.veluxusa.com. Upgrade fixtures. From faucets to shower heads, the fixtures in kitchens

and baths are like jewelry that completes a fashionable ensemble. While you can easily spend thousands on high-end products, you don’t have to in order to achieve a high end look. For a modest investment, you can upgrade faucets, shower heads and other fixtures to improve usability and add a luxurious look to a kitchen or bath. For example, in the kitchen touch-free faucets are both beautiful and practical, minimizing the spread of germs by never requir-

ing you to touch a clean faucet with dirty hands. In the bathroom, a luxurious showerhead can enhance your shower experience with a rainfall effect, music or even lights. Improve flooring. When you think about flooring for kitchens and baths, chances are you think of some common materials such as vinyl or tile. While carpeting or wood may be equally impractical in rooms where moisture and spills are routine, more durable materials

work well in both rooms. When choosing flooring for baths and kitchens, remember the value of slipresistant, moisture-proof, durable options. And if you find a flooring style you love enough to put in both rooms, you just might be able to find a volume discount! Add warmth. Kitchens and bathrooms cry out for a cozy atmosphere, but they can also be among t h e c o o l e s t , d ra f t i e s t rooms in the house. Consider ways to add warmth

to both rooms. You have many options: skylights create warmth by bringing sunlight into the room while they make it feel larger. Below-floor heating can make bathroom floors barefoot-friendly. And for the ultimate touch of luxury, warmth and ambiance, consider adding a gas fireplace in your kitchen or bath. Modern gas fireplaces can be installed virtually anywhere, even in rooms that have never had one before or that aren’t accessible for a chimney.

Classic style in carriage house garage doors Brandpoint

The carriage house garage door is to your house what the little black dress and strand of pearls are to your wardrobe: classic style elements that never go out of fashion. At the dawn of the automobile age, those who were affluent enough to own a car kept it in the carriage house, where the horses and buggy would have been stored. But this cohabitation became a little, well, smelly, and the need for separate storing structures was soon realized. Enter the garage. Built in the style of the original carriage house, the garage’s sole intent was to store the car away from the animals and elements. The word garage actually comes from the French word, garer, which means to shelter and protect. Naturally, the garage needed a door to offer protection to the automo-

bile. The ensuing “carriage house door” was a hinged, double door that swung outward, and is considered the original garage door. In the early 1920s, the kickout door was invented and progress continued from there, bringing us the modern conveniences we have in overhead garage

doors today. Modern carriage house sectional garage doors open overhead- and continue to gain in popularity, constituting 35 percent of the volume in the garage door industry with projections to remain a huge trend. When it comes to the style of garage door chosen, most

homeowners want something classic, that won’t fade in popularity over the years and will also enhance curb appeal. This is especially true if home resale is a factor. A carriage house garage door is the exterior equivalent to white subway tile in the kitchen and hardwood floors inside; classic

design elements that never fade in popularity. The carriage house door also offers myriad design elements. For example, the Classica Collection by Amarr offers a dual-directional wood grain design that provides the realistic look of wood with the practicality and low-maintenance up-

keep of steel. With a threesection design and the option of larger windows, this door offers a more authentic carriage house look with the benefit of additional natural light flow into your garage. Two-tone looks are also available with many color combinations and panel designs, and hardware and window choices are plentiful. These different design options can be tailored specifically to your home’s facade and will further enhance curb appeal. If you’re thinking of replacing a tired garage door in an effort to boost your home’s curb appeal, consider the classic carriage house door, whose popularity has only continued to grow over the last century. With a timeless design that can be specifically tailored to your house, it’s a choice that both you - and future owners of your home - can happily live with for a long time.
